We continue to discuss messages from the story of Bilaam, which we are supposed to remember every single day. One of the reasons we are supposed to remember the story of Bilaam is because we never would have known the story. Everything in the Torah was witnessed by at least one person. Noah witnessed the Mabul , Abraham and Yitzhak were at Akedat Yitzhak. Three million Jews were at Matan Torah. But nobody was there at the story with Balak and Bilaam. And every day, we are supposed to remember those stories that we wouldn’t have known. It’s brought down by the Kabbalists that Bilaam was a reincarnation of Lavan. One of the connections between the two is, as the Daat Zekenim says, when Lavan and Yaakov parted, they made a Gal Ed, with a pile of rocks and a sword, in order to bear witness that they would never go against each other. When Bilaam was on his way to curse the Jewish people, it says his leg got crushed against a fence. That fence was made of those Gal Ed stones. And when he was killed, it says he fell down and landed on that sword. Bilaam was a Gilgul of Lavan, and just like Lavan tried to destroy the Jewish people, so too Bilaam as welll. Lavan tried to destroy the Jewish people in a way that was unknown by all, if not for the fact that the Torah tells us. God came to him in a dream and told him not to harm Yaakov. His plan was to kill Yaakov, as we say in our Haggadah shel Pesach, in V’Hisheamdah , “In every generation, they come to destroy us… let’s learn the lesson from Lavan HaArami.” Why does it say to learn the lesson from Lavan? Why not learn it from Esav, who wanted to destroy us? The answer is because L avan was the one we did not know about. And that’s what we want to stress. In every generation , s omeone wants to destroy us, and we prove it from Lavan- the seemingly loving father-in-law was out to kill us. That is why we remember the story of Bilaam . One of my favorite mashals from the Chafetz Chaim, expresses this concept: When he was a young boy of about seven or eight, the Chafetz Chaim and his friends had an idea. They would play a practical joke on the milkman. Unbeknownst to the milkman, they filled his jugs with water and left them out in the frozen winter night. The n, the milkman would have to chop away at the ice when he woke up in the morning. Their plan was to wake up and watch with glee as the milkman had to chisel away. But even at a young age, the Chafetz Chaim had Yirat Shamayim , so, w ithout telling his friends, he went out in the middle of the night and poured out all of the water. In the morning, he got up with his friends, and they watched in astonishment as the milkman got up, went into the barn, and took his jugs as usual, without any idea that the plan was averted by the Chafetz Chaim. The nimshal is that Hashem is like the Chafetz Chaim in the story , saving the Jewish people from immanent danger. The goyim trying to destroy us are the mischievous children. And we , the Jewish people, are the milkman who has no clue what is going on. This is the explanation that we say in H a llel, where it say s, “ The nations will praise God. ” What is that praise? Ki Gavar Alenu Hasdo / That God’s kindness is great upon us. The rabbis explain that this means that when Mashiach comes , everyone will praise God , even the Goyim. And when they are given the microphone , the goyim will reveal all of the plots that they had planned on doing, that were averted by God. That’s their song - Ki Gavar Alenu Hasdo. As it says, God who does wonders in hiding, Ki L’Olam Hasdo. These are the wonders we don’t know about. The Gemara in Masechet Nidah (31a) actually brings down a story on this pasuk. Two people were going out on a business trip. One g ot a thorn in his foot and start ed cursing. Then he found out the boat sank, and he started to thank God. That is what it means, Oseh Niflaot Levado, the one that the miracle happens to doesn’t even know there is a miracle. That is why the Yarot Dvash says that e very day when we say Modim , we are supposed to have in mind these constant miracles , the miracles that happen to us every day, that we are not aware of.
