Let's talk about Black birth and COVID-19 Birth While Black is already a challenge in the USA, with a global pandemic where Blacks have more incidents of contracting the virus, sever complications and even death. Black woman are still giving birth in these times. Courtnie Carter gave birth to her son in early March 2020 as the virus was introduced to the USA. Courtnie Carter is an experienced breastfeeding support specialist, former WIC breastfeeding Peer Counselor and former Centering Pregnancy coordinator and facilitator. Driven by her love for all things pregnancy and mother/baby, she is committed to increasing the initiation and duration rates of BIPOC and specifically Black breastfeeding mothers. As well as also be a voice for mothers, like her who deal or have dealt with perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety. A mother of two awesome boys, Phoenix (11) and Memphis, who turned 1 March 9, 2021. Her favorite things to do are to play sports and travel.

She is the founder of the Quietly United in Loss Together Campaign which is a Pregnancy And Infant Loss Awareness campaign designed to raise awareness of all types of loss from conception through a child's first two years of life, teach healthy fertility through womb health education, provide support to families who suffer these losses and provide support for programs so they won't close due to inability to afford supplies.
Following the stillbirth of her daughter (Annaya Marie), Nneka sought out ways to aid others in having a positive birth outcome. She stumbled across the doula profession and needed to learn more. She is a full spectrum doula, holding certifications as a birth, bereavement and postpartum doula. She is a certified International Bereavement Specialist, a Certified Community Centered Herbalist, and Womb Health Specialist.

What is Birth Justice? Activist Loretta Ross is shedding light on this topic! Loretta J. Ross is a Visiting Associate Professor at Hampshire College in Women's Studies for the 2017-2018 academic year teaching "White Supremacy in the Age of Trump." She was a co-founder and the National Coordinator of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective from 2005-2012, a network founded in 1997 of women of color and allied organizations that organize women of color in the reproductive justice movement. She is one of the creators of the term "Reproductive Justice" coined by African American women in 1994 following the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt.
She is a nationally-recognized trainer on using the transformative power of Reproductive Justice to build a Human Rights movement that includes everyone. Ms. Ross is an expert on women’s issues: hate groups, racism and intolerance, human rights, and violence against women.
Loretta is a rape survivor, was forced to raise a child born of incest, and she is also a survivor of sterilization abuse. She is a model of how to survive and thrive despite the traumas that disproportionately affect low-income women of color.
She serves as a consultant for Smith College, collecting oral histories of feminists of color for the Sophia Smith Collection, which also contains her personal archives.

A new definition of high blood pressure (hypertension) 2017
(Please note that all numbers refer to mm Hg, or, millimeters of mercury.) The guidelines, in a nutshell, state that normal blood pressure is under 120/80, whereas up until recently, normal was under 140/90.
Now, elevated blood pressure (without a diagnosis of hypertension) is systolic blood pressure (the top number) between 120 and 129. That used to be a vague category called “prehypertension.”
Stage 1 high blood pressure (a diagnosis of hypertension) is now between 130 and 139 systolic or between 80 and 89 diastolic (the bottom number).
Stage 2 high blood pressure is now over 140 systolic or 90 diastolic.

Tracie is a force to be reckoned with; mother, doula, midwife, artist, entrepreneur, writer, visionary & more from Oakland CA, she lives in Atlanta. Tracie is the founder of the National Black Doulas Association.
Tracie began her career in the birth doula field in 2000 after her second child was born. She has attended over 1500+ births with families.
In 2002 Tracie successfully completed Elizabeth Davis' Heart 'N' Hands Midwifery Incentives Program. Upon completion Tracie was the only student from that class to be selected as an Apprentice Midwife for Sacred Body Midwifery in San Francisco. There she learned the practical skills of midwifery. In 2003 Tracie became one of two midwives in the SF Bay Area to service women of color.
With the Tracie Enis Applied Method (T.E.A.M) women are experiencing fast, natural, more efficient labors at a record number through the care of Tracie and her team. She didn't have to die… Kyira Adele Dixon, age 39, she was a vibrant, amazing woman, wife and mother who walked into Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a scheduled C-Section, April 12, 2016. Kyira would not walk out, she would not get skin-to-skin, to breastfeed, to watch her sons grow up. Kyira did everything the right way and it was still not enough to save her life. She is a Black woman in America giving birth and that could lead to death.
Kyira’s story is not unusual, but comes to light because of the family she married into; her mother in law is Judge Glenda Hatchett – We watch Judge Hatchett on TV everyday, never imagining something like this could happen to a person of her stature and amazing work. Glenda’s son, Charles Johnson IV is a private person who has made it his life’s calling to come out and speak up about maternal mortality and how he lost his wife, and the mother of his sons in a careless act.

In the introduction to THE BIG LETDOWN: How Medicine, Big Business, and Feminism Undermine Breastfeeding (St. Martin’s Press; Jan 24, 2017), advocate and journalist Kimberly Seals Allers asserts, “Breastfeeding shows us all the ways, as women, that we have been imagined, constructed, created, and controlled by economics, science, the media, and other so-called authoritative sources.” The breastfeeding narrative, both historical and present-day, is a cautionary tale about the maternal body, good or bad mothers, and how women’s bodies are measured, assessed, and subjected. It’s one of the most divisive issues in the “mommy wars,” and everyone seems to have an opinion about what is best.
Allers’s goal in writing THE BIG LETDOWN is to educate women on the forces at work manipulating their decisions about breastfeeding so they can make a clear-eyed decision for their family. Allers also pushes for more structural support for breastfeeding mothers, and she is already at work trying to make change in communities. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently awarded a three-year, $425,000 grant to fund a program conceived and designed by Allers to create more breastfeeding-supportive community environments.

Being a light skinned black woman – I took the “brown paper bag test” for the first time in my life a few days ago – and I passed. I just previewed Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry’s documentary “Dark Girls” and a few points struck home as my mother is dark but I am light. What is it like living as a light skinned black woman in a color struck world? We light skinned women have been called names: Piss color yellow, chicken shit, goldie, red bone, wanna be white, mixed breed, mulatto, octoroon, mellow yellow…the names go on and on. After school hours are a peak time for juvenile crime and risky behaviors such as drug use, under age drinking and smoking cigarettes, as well as sexual activity. •In America today, 1 in 4 youth --14.3 million children, among them are more than 40,000 kindergarteners --are alone and unsupervised after school (America After 3 p.m., May 2004). •Between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. juveniles are at the highest risk of violence. •Teens who do not participate in after school programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes than teens who do participate. They are also three times more likely to use marijuana or other drugs, and they are more likely to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and engage in sexual activity. (YMCA of the USA, March 2001). •The hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. are the peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2002). •The most common activity for children after school is watching television - on average 23 hours a week. (A.C. Nielsen and Company, 1992.)
In today’s society, fewer and fewer children have a parent waiting for them at home when school lets out. As a result, youth often supervise themselves & younger siblings after school with varying degrees of oversight by parents/guardians.
At the same time, we should not fail to recognize that during these afterschool hours, juveniles are most likely to become victims of crime, including violent crimes such as robberies and aggravated assaults. In this unsupervised time, youth are more vulnerable & more likely to be exploited, injured, & even killed.

Lorenzo Steele Jr. is a former New York City correction officer who mentors to youth about the consequences of negative choices and decisions. He has worked in the nation’s most violent adolescent prison on Rikers Island. His life has changed after working on Rikers Island because there he saw thousands and thousands of youth that had their lives mentally and physically damaged because of the violence and in-humane treatment that the prison system has to offer. He felt a need and compassion to share his prison experience and knowledge to youth, parents, and school officials to help deter youth violence and incarceration. He has mentored to over 30,000 youth in schools, churches and communities. Lorenzo was on several cable shows and appeared on the WABC "Like It Is" with Gill Noble discussing the effects the prison system has on people and communities.

We see it more evident now than ever before – poor to non-existent portrayal of positive images, roles and actions in the media involving the black family. Television, Movies and Music has long moved away from “I’m Black and I’m Proud.”
Today it is challenging to locate ANY positive black roles in the media form that is positive and empowering. This BILLION DOLLAR industry where Blacks dominate in population does NOT represent blacks in positive roles as whites are.
If black positive media is created; it is often difficult to locate, poorly advertised and is unrecognized.
The fallout of the above is a crisis – the black family is further destroyed from the inception of slavery and the Moynihan Papers as blacks are awarded for dysfunction in the media. The Black Male Development Symposium was initiated by the leadership of Chicago’s Third World Press, one of the oldest African-American publishing houses in the United States. The venue was established as a national tour that promoted community discussions on the plight of African American Males (AAM).
The first Philadelphia symposium was held March 2004 as the community outreach project of the Annual Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education. The attendance at the first symposium was expected to be 300-400 attendees. Those numbers were surpassed with well over 700 attendees. The simple adage “If you build it they will come,” continues to drive the attendance numbers of the symposium that now boosts well over 1100 attendees during the annual event. It must be noted that the Philadelphia symposium, to date, is the longest running and the largest attended BMDS event nationally. This is due to the continued and overwhelming support that the event has received every year and the sad and inescapable truth that black males live at great risk & they, their families & communities are eagerly searching for strategies of survival and empowerment. The Symposium provides a forum for practical solutions by providing presenters and interactive workshops to assist attendees in developing realistic strategies and concrete recommendations that they can put into practice in their respective communities. The BMDS becomes a place of finding practical models of solutions and not just a forum for pontification and “drive-by conversation.” BMDS is currently a non-profit organization under the auspices of The Village Builders Resource Network, with Dr. Doreen E. Loury as the Executive Director/Founder.

According to the National Institute of Health, almost 70 percent of black children are born out of wedlock; a 2002 study done by the Urban Institute and American University for the Department of Health and Human Services reported that "married couple households were much more likely to avoid poverty than all other types of households," and that "the apparent gains from marriage are particularly high among black households." And the journal Social Sciences Quarterly reported in 2005 that 9 percent of children in married-couple households were poor in 2000, but 54 percent of children living with never-married mothers were poor.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, media hype about men on the so-called down low prompted considerable finger-pointing in the Black community. A series of high-profile newspaper and magazine articles were written in response to a widely circulated report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on young men who sleep with men, and suddenly bisexual Black men were being blamed for disproportionate rates of HIV among Black women--even though there was little data to back the claim. Years later, an increasing body of evidence is undermining this theory, yet the media are barely covering the story.

Webb, a single parent child has witnessed years of women making poor choices, resulting in violence and dysfunction, wrote this book with the goal: “To provoke thought in women regarding why and how they choose the potential fathers of their children. If this book inspires women to be more cautious, concerned, and careful when selecting their partners- then that goal has been accomplished.”
M.R. Webb is a self-described “bastard child” who spent his formative years growing up on the streets of Brooklyn, New York. “When my mother had me she was a young 20 year-old, no high school diploma, unemployed and on welfare. My father was 19 years-old; at the time of my birth he was sitting in a prison cell awaiting his fate for nearly killing a man.” These were the dismal set of circumstances that served as the backdrop for the portrait of Webb’s life.
Webb says that it was only God’s grace that allowed him to escape the pitfalls of drugs and street violence, earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communications from a top ranking university, and then go on to obtain his Juris Doctor of Law Degree. Today, Webb is a senior executive at a consulting firm in the Northeast.
