With so much competition in the workplace, one thing alone can make the difference between failure and success. YOUR MINDSET.
How do you handle adversity, setbacks, failures, and challenging moments? A poor mindset will yield poor results – even if you are the best and most qualified in the room.
Adversely, a good attitude will yield good results. Having a winning mentality, one that is built to withstand the ups and downs of life will keep you on track to increase your chances of success – even if you aren’t the best and most qualified in the room.
Tune into ‘The Sentinel Mindset’, where we look in the mirror to make real changes, talk to top level guests and explore what it takes to achieve greatness in your craft.

Transitioning from a career in law enforcement to private Executive Protection?
While many officers anticipate a seamless shift, expecting opportunities to readily align with their experience, the reality is starkly different. The private sector is fiercely competitive, with high demand for roles that require more than just a policing background.
Though the skills honed in law enforcement—crisis management, situational awareness, and strategic thinking—are invaluable, they alone seldom guarantee success in this niche field.
Standing out demands deliberate preparation, targeted training, and a nuanced understanding of the industry’s expectations. Drawing from years of guiding professionals through this pivot, we welcome advice from CEO of Spec VIP Justin Hanson for police officers ready to navigate the complexities of Executive Protection and carve a thriving path beyond the badge.

In Ontario, security guards play a critical role in maintaining safety, but what happens if a member of the public alleges misconduct? This video breaks down key legal questions surrounding security guards and potential charges:
-Can a Security Guard Be Charged by a Member of the Public?
Yes. If a security guard allegedly commits a criminal offense (e.g., assault, unlawful confinement) or violates provincial laws (e.g., exceeding authority under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act), a member of the public can report the incident to police. Charges are ultimately determined by law enforcement and the Crown, not the public directly.
-If Charged, Is the Security Agency Required to Represent You in Court?
No, unless stipulated in an employment contract or collective agreement. Security agencies are not automatically obligated to provide legal representation. However, if the guard was acting within the scope of their job duties, the agency’s liability insurance might cover legal costs—but this varies by employer.
-Who Pays for Legal Counsel?
Unless covered by employer insurance, the security guard is generally responsible for hiring and paying their own lawyer. If the allegations relate to workplace actions, consult your employment agreement or union (if applicable) to clarify support options.
Key Takeaways:
-Security guards must operate within legal boundaries to avoid personal liability.
-Employers rarely cover legal costs unless negligence or workplace policies are involved.
-Always document incidents and seek legal advice immediately if facing allegations.

Explore the debate over lowered recruitment standards in Ontario's police service with insights from retired Staff Sergeant Steve Summerville. This episode tackles the reduction of entry requirements and how it contrasts with the increasing complexity of policing duties. Summerville raises a critical concern: the lack of a mandated physical fitness standard for officers after their initial training, turning physical preparedness into a personal, rather than professional, responsibility.
We discuss the potential risks and long-term effects of these changes on the effectiveness and readiness of law enforcement personnel. As policing challenges grow, the question remains: Is the current approach to recruitment and physical fitness standards sufficient for the demands of modern law enforcement?

Matthew utilized the formula of success and he got into policing. I'd say just, just taking it day by day, waiting to earn my role with the company is what got me to the position that I am today. And what's made me so successful to get into Halton police. So, like I said, a lot of people want to have this, this big role.
They want to do all the, like the dirty work, quote unquote, they want to, uh, help out in the biggest way. Now, when I started, my first four months, I was standing in an accessibility section, making sure that the guests that I had in my section were enjoying their time, and that nobody was impeding them. In my time, when I've been managing, usually it takes people to speak up after two shows, that they don't want to be in that said position.
It was a boring position. It was a boring position. However, you did it. I didn't even know this. Yes. But you're right. There are people that, that'll work, you know, a shift or two. And then suddenly it's like, I don't want to do this. Yeah. What would you tell those individuals? I've told a lot of them, like we've all started here.
Everybody has to work their way up to the top. It's success is earned, not given.

#BlackHistoryMonth #Faith #Inspiration #Guidance
As we continue our Black History Month police personnel spotlight, we wanted to share this inspiring clip featuring York Regional Police Inspector Kolin Alexander.
In the clip, Inspector Alexander shares his insights on overcoming challenges and not letting obstacles define your path. He encourages us to keep pushing forward, even when we hit walls. This message is especially relevant as we navigate the ongoing pandemic and its many challenges.
To tie in this message, we reference a famous Michael Jordan quote: “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
Let's take this advice to heart and keep pushing towards our goals, no matter the obstacles we may face.

In honor of Black History Month, we are sharing some amazing stories from police at York Regional Police;
How far are you willing to go to achieve your goals?
Constable Kim Majlik of the York Regional Police faced a seemingly insurmountable obstacle when she tore her Achilles during the background stage of her interview. But instead of canceling or postponing the interview, she pushed herself beyond measure and showed incredible perseverance.
This isn't just a story of personal triumph, though. York Regional Police also went above and beyond expectations to support Constable Majlik during her recovery and ensure she could continue pursuing her dream of policing.
What can we learn from this inspiring story?
When faced with challenges, it's important to maintain a growth mindset and keep pushing forward. And if you're in a position of leadership, remember that supporting your team through difficult times can make all the difference.

As a police officer or security personnel, how do you plan for the unknown? In the fast-paced world of events, there's always a possibility of an unexpected incident. In a recent episode of The Sentinel Mindset, I had the pleasure of talking to Brian Bixler, Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at Foresight Security Consulting.

He shared some amazing stories and insights on how police and security can work together to achieve a greater outcome.
Historically, police and security have never been on the same page, but Bixler's experience shows that collaboration can lead to a successful outcome. Tune in to the episode to learn more about his experience as the Officer in Charge of the Crisis Response Support Section, including the Threat Management Unit and Mental Evaluation Unit.

A new course teaches Ontario police recruits and the public how to defuse a mental health crisis.
Ontario now offers an 18-hour course that teaches police recruits how to deal with people suffering from a mental health crisis, marking the first time such training has been offered to the province's law enforcement cadets. In addition to police receiving this training, Stay Safe has already started to provide this course entitled Public-Police Interactions Training to new industry trainers.
The course pulls on a combination of years of research, key recommendations from coroner's inquests as well as community consultations, according to Jennifer Lavoie, an associate professor of psychology and criminology at Wilfrid Laurier University and co-lead of the mental health crisis response training program
Today we speak to President of Stay Safe on this new course he is teaching that is being adopted by security instructors across Canada.
Is your organization ready for this new change? Check out this episode and find out!

f you had the ability to program your brain on the spot to deal with a high-risk situation, would you know how?
Meet Dr Judith Anderson creator of iPREP.
iPREP training is focused on how people can learn to modify their responses to stress in the moment (and over the long term) and iPREP integrates that into whatever occupation you are working in.
Dr. Judith’s training and research as a health psychologist was originally investigating the impact of severe stress on mental and physical health among US soldiers and veterans. They found a strong link between chronic and severe stress (e.g., combat exposure) and long-term mental and physical health problems.
When Dr. Judith returned to Canada in 2011 to begin at the University of Toronto, she decided to shift her research and focus to figuring out if there were methods of intervention to help (first responders/law enforcement) that were more rapid and effective. There wasn't much available to officers that addressed stress on the job. Rather, there were clinical programs available for people after they got sick, but she knew that was too late for many people - there had to be a better way.
Dr Judith and her team created a fully ambulatory laboratory and went out in the field to measure officer stress and performance - based on these original studies Dr. Judith and her team were able to develop a unique program tailored to law enforcement and first responders that helps improve both health and performance.

To all my event spaces and event planners….are you fully aware of the risk you take with every event?
As a planner, it’s crucial to be well-versed in issues surrounding your events, from alcohol permits to security provisions to occupier liability. These topics may not be glamorous, but they are essential to ensuring a successful and safe event. But don't take our word for it - insurance firms and lawyers regularly defend actions and claims against events, sites, and planners that fail to address these issues adequately. Ignoring them can put your clients and guests in danger and leave you open to legal action. Join us for a 20-minute talk with Expert Witness and President of Stay Safe; Steve Summerville that will cover the critical topics every event planner should know to protect their clients, guests, and themselves. Don’t wait until it’s too late - arm yourself with the knowledge you need to handle any situation that may arise confidently.

You would think that across the board all levels of law enforcement and security personnel receive the best up to date training on a regular basis to help them win on the job.
This is not always the case. Where budgets play a big factor, some industries like the security industry are voluntary and thus almost non existent.
This leaves many either pursuing training programs on their own dollar or simply walking into danger on a daily basis.
Should an employer be held accountable when their employee gets hurt due to lack of training?
Meet Steven Poplawski from Step Training Inc.
Having worked in the law enforcement field for over two decades, Steve found a personal passion for professional training and education. He has resisted the common notion of “awareness training”, looking to create practical real skill-based learning programs that lead to high-level performance and professional knowledge.
Step Training provides modern, evidence-based de-escalation skills for municipalities, teachers, security services, police, and customer service professionals. Their programs address communication, mental health training, decision-making, situational awareness, and stress modulation for improved performance and resiliency.

Can anyone be a leader?
Simon Sinek says that the most important lesson of great leadership is that leaders always work for the people. That's why dictators always keep people divided. If the people are divided, the dictator stays in power. If the people come together, the dictator is out.

What do you do in the face of fear? Do you have the skill set or the mindset to use fear to your advantage in a crisis situation?
Meet Tony Blauer.
Tony has been a visible force in the martial art, self-defense, defensive tactics, and combatives industry for over four decades.
His organization has grown into one of the world's leading consulting companies specializing in the research and development of performance psychology, personal safety, and close-quarter tactics & scenario-based training for law enforcement, military, and professional self-defense instructors.
His research on the neuroscience of fear and the startle-flinch led to the development of the SPEAR System® a modern personal defense system based on physiology, physics, and psychology.
After decades of interviewing victims of violent encounters and studying violence, he created the KNOW FEAR® program which focuses on managing fear through self-awareness, resiliency, and a 'movement' mindset. This program has also been integrated by psychologists helping Vets to deal with PTSD.

Have you ever hid your weakness for fear it would devalue you in the eyes of others? It’s human nature to shy away from the things we are not good at. We like to feel in control, confident and simply - capable.
But does avoiding your weaknesses pose another set of problems?
According to Lucio Tavares (our beloved guest today!), your weaknesses are not supposed to be hid, tucked away from those around us. Why? Because you could hide them from yourself and the unthinkable happens - they go unaddressed.
In his life, Lucio has habitually focused on his weaknesses, purposely assessing, addressing, and attacking them with all his might so they don’t hold him back. In our opinion, this makes his mindset incredibly unique.
Afraid of heights? Go skydiving.
Don’t know how to speak English? Move to Canada.
Aside from being a humble man, pouring his all to support his colleagues at Sentinel, Lucio is now joining Peel Regional Police and they will quickly learn a gem has joined their agency.

Are you a leader? Is your leadership style effective? Sorry…not in a position of leadership? According to Chief Stephen J. Tanner, if you are in law enforcement you are responsible to lead others towards safe outcomes. Essentially, leadership is serving, and serving is…leadership.
Meet our good friend and returning guest - Chief Stephen J. Tanner, the longest serving active Chief of Police in Canada at 20 years in that position. Now serving in Halton Region, Chief Tanner is a glowing example of leading through example. He explains he isn’t ‘over’ the people in his police agency, he works ‘with’ them. Big difference in mindset. HUGE.
In today’s podcast we discuss such topics as:
With a calm and endearing approach, Chief Tanner has navigated his career with a heart of gratitude, a humbleness to learn, and a servant attitude in leadership. After 40 years, and still smiling, there’s a lot we can all learn from his example.

How do you make a name for yourself in the Executive and VIP Protection field, having no policing or military background? Most would have no clue where to start. Not Elijah Shaw.

With tours of duty that have taken him to 6 Continents and 81 countries, Mr. Shaw acts as a personal bodyguard to a number of highly recognizable public figures, providing security consultation and staffing worldwide. Think your job is hard? Try doing Parking Enforcement in the growing metropolis of the city of Toronto. Yes folks, it is a job, and a REAL person is tasked to do it…and for good reason!
I know you’re not convinced.
One thing for certain, enforcing the traffic laws is never dull. Why? Because you are destined to meet ‘customers’ who don’t appreciate your ‘service’.
Someone weaker minded may fold under these pressures - but not our special guest.
Meet the incredible Erin Urquhart who not only is whistling on her way to work, she is using social media to bring us inside the job, showcasing the good, the bad, and the odd ugly moment. Once so gripped by fear to do her duties, she faced them, conquered them and shared how personal growth came through this fear.
Erin alone is transforming what the average person thinks of Parking Enforcement and the people who do the job. Yes folks, they are people! Convinced yet?
Tune in today for a master class on attitude, outlook, and purpose. She truly is a shining star that burns bright in the darkness of grumpy traffic violators. Shame on you for not reading that sign. :)

What would happen if you dedicated your life to seeking out the ‘best of the best’ of these several communities - marital arts, law enforcement, military and executive protection? What if you dedicated your life to building monuments to the elite trainers around the world, sharing insight into their philosophy, their skillset, their purpose and them as people? One thing is for sure - you would not have one day like the next and never be complacent.
Meet Paulo ‘GN’ Rubio who travels the world documenting and sharing his journey with millions via his YouTube channel Funker Tactical.
What makes Paulo so unique is he has no agenda, no self claimed expertise to test or validate, but a humility and hunger to find out the truth in weaponry, close-quarter combat and self-defence. In fact, he is only looking for what works, knowing it could be revealed and hidden with the most obscure and unknown individual. Consider him a travelling student, always seeking, always hurting (this dude jumps in!), always learning.
Why millions worldwide take in his content is simple - he can be trusted with his findings, willing to uncover the truths even if what he shares is not popular with main stream marital artists.
In today’s podcast, hear Paulo share his insight on what he’s witnessed around the world when it comes to combative training, and how to navigate your own journey being mindful of ‘Protection Myths’ which can deceive and disappoint.

Not just words alone, Melvin has a knack for speaking the truth, even if it hurts. And what does he so passionately speak on? The state of the security industry and those who tarnish its reputation as a pretender and offender.
In today’s podcast, straight from Washington D.C, hear Melvin share insight on ‘Goofie Security’, the power of focus and determination, the pitfalls of ego, and how investing in yourself is the way to build your career and reputation. You don’t want to miss this one!

After hearing of the sudden death of our good friend Elias Theodorou, we decided to air a podcast we recorded with him years previous, in his memory, and in his honour.
Rest in Power Elias.
Episode Description:
“Fight, fight, fight”, the crowd usually chants as two teenage delinquents go at it on-screen. In this instance, it was for real. There he was, 10th grade, Elias Theodorou fighting at school. Recorded on a Motorolla Razr, this victory birthed his high school reputation as a fighter.
Elias later went viral on YouTube before he even knew what YouTube was. This time he lost the fight. Without batting an eye, his Greek father told him to become a UFC fighter. This wasn’t to happen again. He joined a gym and 5 years later he went pro!
Now Elias is preparing to build his reputation as a legend amongst the UFC’s elite. Equipped with arguably the best attitude and hair in the UFC, we’re sure he’ll be victorious.
Ladies and gentlemen, Elias Theodorou.

The key to success in any endeavour is finding a need, and then filling it. But before that, you first must know who you are, and know what you offer. This was the strategy of Chris Mandigma, our special guest who has made a name for himself in one of the toughest industries to thrive in - law enforcement training.
Chris Mandigma is recognized as an authority in law enforcement for defensive tactics and he specializes in the integration of empty-hand tactics, impact and edged weapons and pistol with a heavy emphasis on police and self-defense application. His experience spans over fifteen years of experience in law enforcement and security. Chris was born and raised in Toronto, Canada then lived in the Philippines for 5 years after graduating high school. He returned to Canada and began training in Muay Thai which was quickly followed by Jujutsu and the Filipino Martial Arts.
Chris' enforcement career began in Transit Security where he would subsequently become the use of force trainer for the security team. During this time, he also served 5 years as an Auxiliary Constable with the Waterloo Regional Police Service. This was followed by another 5 years of service with Canada's second largest law enforcement service, Canada Border Services Agency where he was assigned as a Use of Force and Firearms Instructor at the main recruit training college. By 2019, Chris was recruited to lead the development of the defensive tactics and firearms program for Environment Canada. Today, he is the Director for Canada and a member on the Board of Tactical Advisors for the Pekiti Tirsia Tactical Association.
As a vetted training supplier for the Government of Canada, Chris is a certified Federal Government instructor and the only TRICOM Master Instructor in Canada. He provides training for multiple law enforcement agencies and protective security service providers across North America.

What does it mean to stand out above the crowd? In a highly completive job market, especially with aspirations of law enforcement or protection work, you must do all you can to not blend in and risk potentially being overlooked. Standing out for the right reasons - is the goal.
Now we’re not talking about gimmicky or superficial ways of being different. No hack will serve you well.
You stand out from the crowd by how you prepare, carry yourself, listen, speak, think and perform…to be considered, you must go over and above - in all things.
In today’s podcast, we explore this topic and why knowing yourself is the most powerful way to make an impact.

90% of human sex trafficking victims in Canada are born and raised on this very soil. Just ask Rhonelle Bruder.
At the age of 16 Rhonelle first encountered what seemed to be the glamorous and alluring sex world. It was a girl only a few years older than her who was her introduction. She had a condo, a perfectly polished appearance and the finest of everything. It turns out she was also a recruiter. Rhonelle soon found herself caught up in a not so glamorous situation. Luckily for her she was able to escape after a few short months.
Now as the creator of the R.I.S.E. Initiative, Rhonelle is helping youth avoid and escape the realities of sexual exploitation, poverty and homelessness. Her light shines brightly on the darkness of a world so few even know exists.
Ladies and gentlemen, Rhonelle Bruder.

Does anyone look after the well-being of police in our nation, and exist to support and spotlight the best aspects of policing and what it means to be a protector of our general public?
There sure does - and we’re not talking about Batman.

Some words from Byron Rogers:
There are so many fantastic options out there when it comes to driving courses and training these days. I wanted to make this video to explain some of the differentiators we at the League have when it comes to our full service driving course.
Really it comes down to what you’re looking for. Some agents simply want vehicle dynamics which has to do with learning how to drive a single car very well which is the foundation of all driving courses and is exactly where you should begin.
The next level is an actual security driving package which has to do with understanding how to communicate in a convoy, vehicle placement, immediate action during emergencies and a number of actual security related tactics.
The third level is where we bring it all together. This is where you must utilize the vehicle dynamics you learn at the beginning of the course infuse them with the security driving tactics you learn in the second level of the course while leveraging what you learned in the third level of the course which is actual CONTACT driving.
As far as I know we are the only ones offering contact driving in the United States to private security professionals and it is an honor to do so. The other two levels vehicle dynamics and security driving are kind of like learning how to become accurate on the range and get on paper, then learning how to compete at a shooting competition but contact driving is where you actually learn how to fight and defend your client and yourself behind the wheel… Force on force is really where you learn how to fight.
Every single level of training is extremely important. If you would like to be a true security driver you should definitely be trained in all three levels.
We are rolling out new courses on the calendar as we speak

Title - A PROTECTOR WORTH HIRING
It was almost as if it were predestined. At the very least, it was seared into Mubin's gene pool. He was the grandson of an undercover cop in India, but York region is not India. By day, he was a public school student and by night he went to medresa - Islamic school. It was the perfect storm for an identity crisis and his was a tornado.
When Mubin was shamed for a common teenage blunder, he found himself in his Muslim faith. His quest for Allah took him overseas where he came face-to-face with the Taliban. They were just what he was looking for... at least this is what he thought. A belief that came crashing down with the second plane on 9/11. It took 2 years in Syria - studying with Sufi Muslims, to correct his views and bring him inline with his purpose.
Now Mubin is following in his grandfather’s footsteps. As an undercover personnel, he worked with CSIS and the RCMP to fight the good fight against terrorism on Canadian soil. Mubin is even featured in the Washington Spy Museum, where they have an entire wall on him and the incredible work he has done.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mubin Shaikh.

Just like the famous movie ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ - Driving for safety is just as important a job.
The League of Executive Protection Specialists - Hard Skills Intensive was evidence that, expert training can take a novice with zero security driving know-how, and transform them to respond against instinct and perform advanced maneuvers with a new weapon of choice - their car.
Why would you need to do that you ask? Great question.
Rick Sweeney and his team have spent the last two decades specializing in high-risk security details of international scope. During this time, they developed a training that works in the field. Students of the training have regularly been hired to join their protection teams, spanning the globe and facing high threats on the regular.
With the stakes high, training is not for the purpose of achievement and certification, but sheer survival. Join us again as our good friend BYRON RODGERS takes us for a drive, and a talk on the importance of Driving - miss ‘Safety’.

A dedicated and disciplined worker, he stumbled across Sentinel and immediately joined the company, bringing his hardworking and humble attitude to the table. So how do you increase your odds for success? Take. A. Shot.
Meet Alex, who’s identity we have to keep private for security reasons. With so much scrutiny and spotlight on policing gone wrong, even the best and reasonable amongst us may doubt police and if they can be trusted.
The truth policing is a very difficult and demanding job, and it requires really good people to do it well.
Meet JARROD SINGH, one of Scarborough’s finest who’s incredible journey to policing is one to take note. Having domestic violence in his home growing up, Jarrod saw what police did - right in his living room.
As a child, for him Police on the scene meant for the first time he felt safe. This is when he decided he would be someone known as a protector. Fast forward a few years, and Jarrod not only has impacted the communities he serves but also made viral waves online with an incredible story of gang fight turned dance off that you must hear him tell.
No one was hurt in that incident, which was video taped and shared on all major news stations.
Within that unique story is a wonderful example of Jarrod’s heart to police in a new era by building relationships, talking with communities, and protecting them when necessary. If change is necessary, meet the future of policing.

In 2019, Netflix released ‘Close’, an action thriller whose main character was inspired by Jacquie’s life story.
With so many close scrapes with death while risking everything for her clients, Jacquie is genuinely surprised to still be alive. She has been stabbed, thrown through a shop window, shot at several times, including by Kashmiri snipers, and chased through some of the world’s most dangerous countries. She has also freed a young British woman who was being held captive in Pakistan, and rescued men imprisoned by Saddam Hussein’s son, Uday, in Iraq.
After leaving the police force in the 1970s Jacquie Davis worked as a CPO, where her training, which included combat training and a willingness to risk everything for ‘the client’, led her into increasingly life-threatening operations, so much so that she became recognized as the world’s top female bodyguard.
Jacquie’s first published book “The Circuit” is a fascinating account of one woman’s amazing experiences involving the dangerous job of rescuing children and adults around the world, to the more glittering world of guarding well-known celebrities such as Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Gerard Butler, Nicole Kidman, Bradley Cooper, Sarah Ferguson (formerly HRH The Dutchess of York), teenage heart-throb Justin Bieber and the Beckhams, to name but a few.
Jacquie Davis is trained to a very high level in counter-surveillance, firearms, restraint tactics, bomb search, defensive driving, hostage awareness and survival. However, her day-to-day client responsibilities are more about conflict management, strategic planning and tactics than the hyped and distorted Hollywood perception of bodyguards diving in front of bullets and high speed car chases.
In fact, Jacquie never looks after anyone unless there is a real and genuine threat to their life or well-being; that’s the difference between having a bodyguard for prestige, as some pop stars do, and for protection.
In today’s podcast, we catch up with Jacquie at the recent EP Forum in Las Vegas.

If you say it, will it happen?
If you believe it, will it materialize?
If you want it, is it yours?
The questions are much debated and your answers to the above will vary just as much as the people you ask will vary.
One thing that must be factored in the above questions is something you cannot ignore. Nothing will happen if you just say it, believe it, or want it.
YOU MUST PUT IN WORK.
To the individual who says:
’I want to be a millionaire’
‘I want to climb Mount Everest’
‘I want to be in top physical shape’
‘I want to be a working professional’…
…Is saying, believing and wanting this enough?
No. YOU MUST PUT IN WORK.
This is why you don’t see people everywhere achieving everything they say, believe and want. The missing ingredient most times will be something you may not have considered.
YOU MUST PUT IN WORK.
In today’s special car-cast (filmed en-route while visiting our friends at a local police agency), we explore what this work may be, and why it is imperative you count the cost before you set out on your journey.
Ladies and gentlemen, YOU MUST PUT IN WORK. :)

You’re working a Protection Detail. Your job is to keep someone safe, and alive. Unprovoked, you are in the midst of an attack, so you do what anyone who prepares to protect would do - you ACT. You intercede. You get the job done. But what would you do if you faced a ‘battle beyond the battle’? What if you were criminally charged for you actions? This reality is something we are very aware of, and keen to prepare for. But how do you prepare for such a thing? Introducing the ‘Protect the Protector’ Program. A groundbreaking, unique and exclusive training experience that puts the best protectors in the game, in the hot seat. We chose 8 of our executive protection agents and put them through the experience of being charged for their actions, sitting through a court Discovery which by all accounts tested their actions and their patience. But why? To prepare them and provide them with the tools to work wisely, safely and be able to articulate their actions. The value of this cannot be understated. In today’s podcast, we discuss the beta-testing of this program with one of it’s creators - Steve Summerville (Expert Witness, Advisor, Trainer of over 15,000 Police and Expert Witness when protection measures are questioned in court). Steve shares how there is such a large need for such training, the demand we are experiencing from other security companies and protection agents to undergo this testing and training firsthand, and how to work wisely so the person you aren’t protecting - is yourself. What is the incentive to perform your best on the job?
If you thought money - think again. We aren’t negating the importance of financial gain and being able to provide for yourself and loved ones, but perhaps there is a deeper reason and motivation to be your best.
Maybe it has to do with the person in the mirror. Not Candyman. Your beautiful self.
The truth is, a commitment to excellence in everything you do - including your job, benefits you in the long run. It creates opportunity for you and even compels those around you to not only acknowledge your efforts, but help you in your occupational endeavours. Human nature is to help the person who is doing all they can - to do all they can on the job.
Even when no one is watching, will you work in such a way that even makes yourself proud? That is a wonderful place to work from, and you are a wonderful person to work for.
In today’s podcast, we share some insight on how to perform your best. Now that you know you are the reason WHY to perform, here’s some tips HOW.

What does it take to be a protector?
Is it a skillset, a martial art, your nature, or your gender?
If you were to hire protection for your business, yourself or your family, what would you think if a female was sent to your aid?
Even in elite circles, human nature is tested as we have a tendency to judge a book by its cover. A square jaw, large muscular build and looming height are no guarantees the job as protector will be done competently and adequately. Don’t you think there should be more to base your criteria on to assess one’s ability?
In today’s podcast we meet a special someone who has had to prove herself in every circle she has been a part of. She brings with her a tremendous passion, a humble wisdom, a fierce ‘use of force’ instructor background, and an astute ability to articulate her vast knowledge and experience. Every team would be better is they had someone like her on it.

What does it take to be Police? As two of some of the best in recruiting and finding the talent our Province has to offer, meet Inspector Andrew Cooper, and Constable Danny Marttini - who together sift through the thousands of applicants in search of the special few who are chosen each year to join Peel Regional Police. What do they look for? Can you prepare yourself today, for a greater chance at making the force tomorrow?
Does currently working in an un-related field make you un-relevant? Good questions. One thing they shared was you must be prepared to change your life. This job requires your mind, body and soul - everyday. To prepare for a job in policing, you will miss holidays, birthdays, and your bed when there’s a major snow storm. Discipline and dedication are a must. And how relevant is security to a career in policing? More than you’d think. Sentinel has a history of developing recruits on a regular basis for success on the police force. People from all across Canada and the world are looking to apply to Sentinel with aspirations of policing because they know how intricate and demanding our developing programs are. We intentionally have designed our development for this purpose, as personal growth our people inevitably brings company growth! This week we will be hosting a series of videos and interviews with Inspector Andrew Cooper and Constable Danny Marttini that breaks down what is needed to get into policing and what you need to be doing now to become successful. Let us remind you less than 6% of applicants who go to schooling for policing ever make the force. Get your pencils and paper out because class is already in session. To be the best, you must train with the best.
In our effort to be constant leaders in our industry, we are grateful to have some incredible professionals in our circles.
Today, we look to three Protection Specialists who help manage our work and our teams at Sentinel. The task? Assemble the best team possible for a new challenging client.
NOTE: The client was not the challenge, but their environment and protection needs. :) In an effort to push the envelope, our newest department required the best out there.
Beyond a fancy resume, and mother’s endorsement, we were looking for those truly ‘battle tested’ that could perform in the most difficult of environments. How would we know if they have what it takes? Certainly not through a standard interview where they were asked cliche questions and provided rehearsed answer on their strengths and weaknesses.
To find the best, you must think outside the box. We decided to throw applicants into the fire of a difficult environment by testing their physical, mental and emotional prowess. Faced with physical testing that even the best would struggle through, faced with a scenario that even the best would find difficult, we had three of our top trainers and protection specialists create a gauntlet of testing that 90% of applicants DID NOT SHOW UP FOR.
You read that right. They backed off. Shared stories of injuries, conflicts in their schedule, or plain did not show up for their time slot. We knew this would happen because one thing’s for certain - the ELITE amongst us are not in the plentiful. It takes hard work to find those who love hard work. Read that twice over.
Putting together our new Event Protection Specialist department, the need for the highest calibre people was paramount. With challenging new clients who had challenging new problems for us to address and guide them safely and securely through, we needed to find the best our city has to offer out of necessity, not for a fancy marketing campaign.
This week on our podcast we meet the trainers, the testers, the three amazing Protection Specialists that worked together to find the gold. Tune in to hear what they had to say about the experience and watch some of the behind the scenes footage of what transpired.
Ladies and gentlemen - meet Ben, Beata and Chris.

Are you a born Protector? Someone who risks it all for another without hesitate? What would you do if you could not even protect the one person you know best - yourself? Meet Mike Pannone, a former operational member of U.S. Marine Reconnaissance, Army Special Forces (Green Beret) and 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force) as well as a competition USPSA pistol shooter holding a Master class ranking in Limited, Limited-10 and Production divisions. Mike suffered a blast, lost an eye and endured 20 reconstruction surgeries to his face. Mike shared with us at the Protection Symposium 4.0 in Miami that he recalls using a nickel to recover in his hospital bed by throwing it on his bed sheets, and repeatedly reaching for it to teach and train his body in depth perception. This was just one thing he set his mind to conquer so he would not be a victim in life, beyond the blast. Having no other option but to medically retire, Mike pivoted as a high-risk contractor overseas. Despite all he suffered and lost, Mike’s machine like determination and commitment to training helped him survive, and protect his own ability to make a livelihood. A commitment made by every police officer in service.

Protectors - nature or nurture? For the Sentinel Team, we admittedly never gave it much thought. We just did what we did, day in a day out - protecting those that asked us to. Not until we attended Protector Symposium 4 in Miami 2021, spending a few days with some of the world’s protection elite, did we realize that we shared something with them all - we were BORN Protectors. Are you the same? When life crashes down on another, do you run to help without considering your own well being? If so, you may think nothing of it, that anyone else would do the same, but that’s because it is your nature. Why else would you risk your safety for a stranger? Unboxing this gives us insight into the unique gift these people bring to any community. They protect them, no matter the risk. In our eyes, this is an incredibly valuable role. One we take great pride in, because the highest call is not to be served, but to serve. Now meet Byron Rodgers - one the world’s best protectors whose calling is simple - ‘Help Good People become More Dangerous’. Using his voice and network, Byron has orchestrated the Protector Symposium which we had the privilege of attending in Miami this year. On today’s podcast, we discuss the impact these few days had on us, and chat with Byron in Miami, in the midst of some of the toughest training to help nurture - that nature. HARDSHIP - is it really something we should avoid at all costs? In our ‘cushy’ society filled with comfortable options everywhere we turn, has enduring hard things become a thing of the past? Obviously not, as life is no respecter of persons and ultimately, you will face things that will be hard to endure. But endure you must. It is widely known the caterpillar, metamorphosed and ready to come out of its chrysalis, must struggle immensely to free itself into its new transformed self. The muscles needed to fly, are developed during this struggle. If you helped them through this struggle by opening the cocoon to make it easier together out, The butterfly would fall to the ground unable to fly - void of the muscles to do so. The same applies to Dragan’s (A real Serbian name). Meet Dragan - known for his beautiful heart, street sense - and muscles. Beyond his lats, his life experience is rich and those who know him are enriched by his words and perspective. His humbleness is what catapulted him from a job with Sentinel, into policing - 3 times faster than he planned.

COPS. This name alone can bring up a plethora of reactions, from varied opinions, to a wide range of emotions. Good. And Bad.
But why?
With recent well-documented incidents casting a major shadow on policing practices, can anything be done to improve this relationship between Police and the Public?
Ron Chhinzer, a veteran officer who has served on special Guns and Gang units, and even spearheaded a program to get the same gangsters he was arresting out of their gang and off the streets, is an example of that such hope.
In today’s podcast, Ron goes over what new cops should focus on to be simply - the best 'GOOD' cop they are capable of. His words are not isolated to the industry of policing, but challenge anyone who knows what it’s like to work in pressurized environments. We know you will appreciate his insightful words, and no nonsense approach to what police need to do to get respect - beyond the badge alone.

Truth is, much of what he observes in the private sector does not suffice. This is why Joe has brought his decades of experience and training expertise to the private sector to see it grow in Protection knowledge and skill-set. In this podcast Joe shares what it takes to craft a career in Protection, from disciplined hard work, to the importance of adaptability, flexibility, and common sense, to being truthful about your experience. Having seen many pretenders come and go who are more focused on the image of being an Executive Protection agent more than training as one, trust Joe to give you his honest opinion to help you face the realities of a career in Protection. WHAT GOOD IS A WARRIOR, WITH A WEAK MINDSET?
