This week on the Next Shift Hockey podcast we are joined by legend of the game and one of the biggest names in hockey, Eddie Olczyk.
The Chicago native was selected 3rd overall in the 1984 NHL entry draft by his hometown Chicago Blackhawks and played 16 NHL seasons that included a Stanley Cup championship with the 1994 New York Rangers and totaled 342 goals + 452 assists for 794 points in 1,031 games. Additionally, Olczyk represented USA 9 times on the international stage during his career.
After hanging up the skates, Olczyk joined FSN Pittsburgh as a color commentator for the Penguins and in 2003 he would move from the booth to behind the bench where he served as the head coach of the Penguins. After coaching a young Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux at the end of his career, Edzo would return back to television which would lead to his current role as the lead analyst for the NHL on Turner Sports.

In this week’s episode we are joined by former All-American Harvard Goaltender and current President of the Colorado Eagles – AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche – Brian Petrovek.
Brian Petrovek was an All-American goaltender at Harvard before being drafted by the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the WHA’s Edmonton Oilers in 1975.
Petrovek’s resume also boasts a senior management position with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, where he served as the Vice President of Marketing for four seasons under Lou Lamoriello (1989-1993). After six years with the Devils’ organization, Petrovek accepted a position with USA Hockey, where he worked for seven years as deputy executive director (1993-2000) and as executive director of the USA Hockey Foundation during his final two years (1998 -2000) in Colorado Springs. Petrovek served as Team Leader for Team USA at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and for the United States Men’s Team at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. Petrovek worked with Team USA during its championship run at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame with the team in 2016.
Petrovek most recently served as CEO and alternate governor for the AHL’s Stockton Heat from 2017 to 2020. In addition, he has previously led the American Hockey League’s Adirondack Flames (2014-15), Portland Pirates (2000-14) and Utica Devils (1987-90), as well as serving as team president of the ECHL’s Adirondack Thunder (2015-17) and was recently hired this summer as the President of the Colorado Eagles – The AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.

Sean holds the record for most fighting majors ever handed out in any league in the regular season and faced 1 MAJOR setback serving 20 months in federal prison having to plead guilty on conspiracy marijuana charges in the middle of his career.
In addition to hearing his story of redemption, gratitude and perspective, we got the chance to hear his opinion on fighting in hockey, setting new goals in his post playing career, finding his passion and dealing with rejection.

Fleury a 7 time All- Star played in over 1000 NHL games and amassed over 1000 points between 1989 and 2003 with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks.

As a coach, Peter has experience at the Prep level with Buckingham Brown and Nichols as well assisting with Providence and Babson College. Recently he transitioned to working 1 on 1 with players.
Peter is more than just a skills coach, he helps clients at various levels navigate the limiting beliefs that we all carry, shift the perception of their identity as just hockey players, and most importantly helps them connect back to why they play and how to create meaning and joy out of the mundane aspects of the game and life.

This week we are honored to be joined by St. Lawrence Skating Saints coaching legend Joe Marsh. Coach Marsh spent 26 years behind the St. Lawrence University bench and forged one of the most successful coaching careers in U.S. college history. Not only was he successful with wins and championships, but he was also one of the most revered and admired coaches of his generation. He coached twelve of the fourteen 20+ win seasons in St. Lawrence history, produced ECAC championship teams in 1988, 1989, 1992, 2000 and 2001, and took teams to eight ECAC tournament championship game appearances.

This week we were honored to be joined by another Boston Bruins legend, a man who has dedicated his life to the game of hockey, Mike O'Connell. Mike played over 800 games in the NHL between 1977 and 1990 with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, and Detroit Red Wings. After his playing days ended, Mike took up coaching and then transitioned to the management side of the game and became the GM of the Boston Bruins in 2000. Currently, Mike is the director of professional player development with the Los Angeles Kings where he has won 2 Stanley Cups.

This week we decided to go around the horn and share our own stories including the adversity we faced as players, as well as people, after the lights went out on our hockey careers. The challenges and dark times endured, made us, our guests, and listeners stronger people that earned a crucial wisdom for the present...it also led us to the start of Next Shift.
We truly believe our value lies within the stories of our guests, who have all been open, honest, and inspirational...but, this week we felt the need to interview ourselves to give context to our start. Not to mention - if we are going to ask our guests to discuss difficult, emotional topics, it is only fair we answer the bell ourselves and do the same.

André played his junior hockey in the QMJHL (1974-78 for the Quebec Remparts and Hull Olympiques) and played 8 years (1978-86) in the NHL for the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, and Quebec Nordiques. Before his playing days ended, Andre started interning on Wall Street, where he would eventually end up working as an Equities trader for 27 years. Recently, André transitioned from Wall Street to Integral Hockey Connecticut where he now works in his passion of repairing broken hockey sticks. In the interview, we go through Andre's journey and rise to the NHL, his transition to like after hockey on Wall Street, and finally how he landed with Integral Hockey.
