Menasha Public Library is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2021. The celebration kicked off with a proclamation by Menasha Mayor Don Merkes proclaiming 2021 to be The Year of the Elisha D. Fox Cities Book Festival 2019 Authors Neil Hansen and Luann Grosscup and their book Flight: An Air America Pilot’s Story of Adventure, Descent and Redemption
Air America pilots risked their lives over the skies of southeast Asia during the days of the Vietnam War and the secret war in Laos. Air America did not operate within the context of the
U.S. military, instead performing their duties as “shadow warriors,” owned and operated under the Central Intelligence Agency.
Beyond detailing covert operations with Air America (and including the day he had the dubious honor of being on three downed aircrafts in a single twelve-hour span), Air America Capt. Neil Hansen addresses his post-Air America time when he was flying for a fly-by-night commercial carrier in Cambodia in 1975. He escaped from there literally hours before the entire country fell to the Khmer Rouge at the time of the Cambodian holocaust. Neil escaped, in essence, by stealing a plane and flying in the blind, sans flight plan, from Cambodia to Bangkok, only a matter of moments before the murderous Khmer Rouge marched into Phnom Penh.

Rusty Nails Blues present classics of country blues.
This is a demonstration and discussion of the country blues genre with emphasis on pre-WWII blues. Recorded on April 24, 2019.
Members of Rusty Nails Blues, Steve Heiner and Ben Lillge, are musicians who aim to maintain and preserve the great American art form known as the blues.
With a focus on acoustic blues, their repertoire includes songs from the 1930’s to more contemporary material. The original artists the duo covers include Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Howlin’ Wolf, Reverend Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, and many more.
On Wednesday, March 13, we had Druid’s table perform an acoustic set in our Company E Room. Druid's Table is a group of five musicians from the Fox Cities, has been performing traditional Celtic folk music since 1999.
The group performs jigs, hornpipes, ballads, pub songs, reels, airs and Irish polkas using instrumentation including harp, accordion, penny whistle, fiddle, guitar, Irish flute, concertina and bodhran.

Teresa Weglarz, Assistant Professor at UW-Fox Valley in Biological Sciences, joins us to talk about composting, reducing food waste, and all the benefits that ensue. She was kind enough to come to the Menasha Library in June to present and demonstrate composting; if you missed the presentation here is your chance to get started.

Today we have Donna VanBuecken former executive director of the Wild Ones on the show. We discuss native landscaping, the Wild Ones organization, and bats as pollinators. I linked an article with some more information on exactly how bats pollinate. Also, we discussed the dangers of Wild Parsnip and that it looked like a native plant, the name of which eluded us. I have linked to a comparison of Wild Parsnip, Queen Anne’s Lace, and a couple other look-alikes. They are all mostly poisonous.

A night of romantic jazz ballads with performers José Encarnación on the saxophone and Matt Blair on Keys. Jose Encarnacion leads the jazz improvisation classes, coaches jazz small groups, teaches applied jazz saxophone, and coordinates the jazz performance program at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Matt Blair is a student at Lawrence University.

This is Colin, of the Menasha Library Podcast, welcome back. We’re in the frigid doldrums of January now, silent winds blow through silent fields of ice and snow, yet still, we have meat on the grill, milk in our glasses, and eggs in the pan. Where are all these wonderful gifts coming from? A large warehouse of items called a supermarket? Plastic wrapped and cardboard boxed? What mythical factory creates this food we rely on?
Today I turn back the clock and learn about our Wisconsin heritage. Learn about people who are carrying on this legacy of stewardship to the land, the animals, and the community: Our local Wisconsin farmers.
There is something truly special about seeing exactly where your food comes from, walking over the very soil that nurtured it, and knowing that meticulous care and vigil was kept protecting the spirit of our Wisconsin farming tradition. And according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s article on June 7th, 2016, “Wisconsin farmer’s leaders in organic food” by Jennifer Rude Klett, we are leaders in organic dairy and beef farms. That’s something to be proud of, and build on, for our future.
Located in New Holstein Wisconsin, about a 45-minute well-worth-it drive from Menasha, the farm has 210 acres of pasture for grazing, various barns, and a farm store. I arrived a chilly December night to a porch full of animal friends. A chicken and dog napping together with cats delicately padding from unexpected directions, curious with the new visitor.

Happy Holidays from the Menasha Library Podcast! Today we discuss an important topic with the Vice President of Donor Services at the Community Blood Center, Kris Belanger (pictured below). During the holiday season donor numbers drop, so to encourage and remind and thank, they are giving away a free long-sleeve t-shirt to all donors between December 22 and January 15th. Art Wall Series 4
The featured artist on the library's art wall in December is Leif Larson and we were fortunate to have him come down to the library to do a podcast. This is the fourth installment of the Art Wall Series podcasts, and we were joined by John Nebel, local artist, former library board member, and Menasha Library art initiative collaborator.
It's a great primer to getting to know Leif in anticipation of the Meet the Artist event, December 3rd. Leif will be doing a live painting where we can watch his artistic process evolve a blank canvas to an imaginative story. Leif Larson will be open to questions, or discussions about art, while he is working, so don’t be shy! It’s an all-day event held in the Miron Fireside Room where his Good Morning Bohemia painting will be displayed.

Levanetz also designed the center sunlight sculpture that anchors the Veteran’s Memorial located at the Isle of Valor, behind the Memorial Building on Doty Island.

Today’s podcast: we have Seth Hoffmeister the Northeast Organizer for the League of Conservation Voters in Wisconsin.
As Northeast Organizer, Seth works with volunteers, activists, and partner organizations in the community to hold our elected officials accountable for the decisions that they make regarding our natural resources and works to draw attention to important conservation issues in and around Northeast Wisconsin.
Today we have local historian Tom Sutter, who has a display on the art wall this month, and is giving a presentation at the library Sunday, October 23, 2016 - 2:00pm. A reception will immediately follow the event in the Miron Fireside Room with local musician Jennifer Levenhagen. This presentation is part of a month-long celebration of the centennial of the National Park Service and the legacy of John Muir.

Local musician Kelvin Kaspar played with the Kenosha Dixie 5 a.k.a the Kenosha Kickers to deliver a Dixieland-Polka-Jazz experience. The band is a quintet of clarinet, trumpet, banjo, bass and percussion.
