On this episode of the American Valor podcast, we were joined by Jon Hancock, a Marine veteran and documentary filmmaker as well as the co-founder and president of the Bastards’ Road Project. Jon Hancock was born in Honolulu but moved all over the world until he ended up moving to Maryland for good. Early on in his life, Jon Hancock realized that he wanted to be a Marine. He worked with a team called the Magnificent Bastards and later moved on to work counterintelligence operations.
Following his time as a Marine, he came home and attended the University of Maryland. He later took on mountain biking and made the decision to walk across the country to meet with fellow members of his unit along with gold star families; he took off on this journey on September 11th in 2015. This journey led Mr. Jon Hancock to make a documentary called Bastards Road which is all about his journey and how he learned about himself while on this journey. In this episode, he talks about his journey and some of the hardships that he faced while on his walk across the country.

Stammen grew up and still resides in North Star, Ohio a village about 11 miles (18 km) northwest of Versailles. Drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 12th Round of the 2005 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of Dayton.
In 2012, Stammen took his first trip to Afghanistan to visit military personnel. Stammen's work with the United States Military is partially due to some of his college friends joining the Army and Marines. His support of the military has continued throughout his Major League Baseball career. In recognition of all his efforts to the military, he was the Major League Baseball recipient of the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award, in 2020.

Ms. Justine Siegal, the founder of Baseball for all, speaks about creating a role for women and girls in baseball. She shares her experiences with individuals such as Mike Veeck, Joe Maddon, and Billy Beane.
“When she was 13, Justine’s coach told her that girls were only supposed to play softball—not baseball. At that moment, she vowed she’d never quit. At 16, despite being ridiculed, laughed at, and told no man would ever listen to a woman on the baseball field, she worked toward her goal of becoming a college baseball coach.
To give her an edge in an otherwise male-dominated profession, Justine earned her PhD in Sports Psychology while working as an Assistant Baseball Coach for Springfield College. She went on to be the first woman to coach for a professional men’s baseball team (Brockton Rox, 2009), the first woman to throw batting practice to a Major League Baseball team during Spring Training (Cleveland Indians, 2011)—and the first woman to ever coach for a MLB organization (Oakland Athletics, 2015). Since then, her jersey has been hung in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and she has gone on to work with baseball teams around the world, including Team Israel at the MLB World Baseball Classic Qualifier, and teams in Japan and Mexico as a guest coach.
Now, Justine is giving back to the next generation with Baseball For All, a nonprofit she founded to provide opportunities for girls to play, coach, and lead in baseball. “Too many girls are still told they can’t play baseball. I want girls to know they can follow their passions and that they have no limits—that their dreams matter” (Baseballforall.com).

Mr. Eric Kettani served in the Navy for two years after graduating from the US Naval Academy before embarking on a career as a football player in the NFL and fulfilling his service commitment in the Navy Reserves. Kettani shares stories of serving in the Navy and playing football at the professional level for coaches such as Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots.
“Lieutenant Eric Kettani (born March 26, 1987) was an American football fullback who played five seasons in the National Football League. He played college football at the United States Naval Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science specialized in Economics.
Kettani attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 2009. He played for the Navy Midshipmen football team from 2006-09. In his last three seasons with the Midshipmen, Kettani rushed 395 times for 2,091 yards, a 5.3-yards-per-carry average, and scored 15 rushing touchdowns. He was named the MVP for the first win against Notre Dame in 43 years and never lost to Army or Air Force” (EricKettani.com).

“Jim Morris is no stranger to big dreams. Since he was five years old, he passionately yearned to play baseball in the major leagues. However, despite all his hard work and determination, a series of unfortunate events and injuries scuttled his career before he was twenty-five. Doctors told him he would never play again.

Cleveland Indians Hall of Famer Mr. Kenny Lofton shares stories from his seventeen seasons in Major League Baseball, including stealing bases, Omar Visquel, Frank Thomas, Albert Belle, and Bob Feller. Also hear about Mr. Lofton’s endeavors since retiring from baseball in 2007, including producing movies through FilmPool Inc. and starting and supporting the Still Got Game Foundation.
Lofton attended the University of Arizona on a basketball scholarship. The Wildcats made it to the Final Four in 1988. Lofton made 11 postseason appearances, including World Series appearances in 1995 and 2002 with the Indians and Giants, respectively. From 2001 to 2007, Lofton did not spend more than one consecutive season with a team. For his career, the Indians were the only team he played with for longer than one season and the only franchise he played for more than once. Lofton played 9 1⁄2 seasons with the Indians, helping the organization win six division titles. In 2010, he was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame. During his professional baseball career, Lofton's single-season stolen base count led the American League (AL) on five occasions and all of Major League Baseball (MLB) three times. In 1994, he led the American League in hits. Lofton broke Ricky Henderson's record of 33 career postseason stolen bases during the 2007 postseason. Of his base running, Frank White said, "Lofton has out-thought a lot of major-league players" and later, "a smart, complete baseball player" (Wikipedia).

“While serving as an Army platoon leader, [the Life Skills for Soldiers] Founder realized there are far too many soldiers who lack basic life skills causing additional stress and burden on themselves and their families. He began teaching a diverse set of everyday life topics including how to make a budget, how to start investing, and how to meal plan in the belief that doing so would help the individual and the unit. As a veteran-founded 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we continue this work by arming military officers with the instructional tools needed to serve their soldiers.

Billy Hurley III graduated from the United States Naval Academy, where he played golf before becoming a Surface Warfare Officer and professional golfer on the PGA Tour. Hurley speaks of the subtle differences between his good and bad times on the golf course and his lessons learned in his time in the Navy that transitioned to other areas of his life, his advice for a young person at the Naval Academy, and his foundation: “The Billy Hurley III Foundation was established to support, honor and benefit a vital group of unsung heroes: military families” (BillyHurley3.com).
“Billy grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, the oldest of four children. His father, Bill, introduced him to golf at a young age, and his mother, Cheryl, supported his growing passion by driving him to countless tournaments. During his senior year at Loudoun County High School, he was named to the all-state team and ranked third in Virginia.
After his naval service ended in 2009, Billy turned his focus to golf. He earned his place on the Web Dot Com Tour in 2011, finishing the season in 25th place and therefore winning his PGA Tour Card. He was the first Naval Academy graduate to achieve this milestone.
For the next 3 years Billy played in numerous events, finishing 5th at the Honda Classic, tied for 4th at the Greenbrier Classic, and qualifying for his first U.S. Open & Open Championship. He struggled during the 2015 season, ultimately losing his PGA Tour card. But he rebounded quickly in 2016 with a win at Quicken Loans National, a Tiger Woods-hosted tribute to military personnel. With that, Billy qualified for his first PGA and Masters Championships.
As of April 2017, Billy is the only U.S. Military veteran on the PGA Tour. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Heather and their three children Will, Jacob & Madison.

Retired Rear Admiral Tom Kearney speaks about his career path from Seaman Recruit to Vice Commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the role of submarines in the Navy, his experience setting a submarine record, handling an emergency at sea, and leadership – both externally and internally of a group.
“Rear Adm. Thomas Kearney grew up in Dover, New Jersey, and enlisted in the Navy in 1978. He was commissioned via the Villanova University Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in political science (international relations) from Villanova University and is certified as a level III program manager from the Defense Acquisition University.
Prior to command, his sea tours included assignments as a division officer and Navigation Department head aboard USS New York City (SSN 696); engineer officer aboard USS Henry L. Stimson (SSBN 655 Gold), and executive officer aboard USS Helena (SSN 725), where he conducted deployments and patrols to both the North Atlantic and Western Pacific.
Ashore he served as an NROTC instructor at Villanova University, executive officer/engineer officer of the Moored Training Ship (MTS) 635; squadron engineer, Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 7; and as first commanding officer of Pre-Commissioning Unit USS Virginia (SSN 774).
Kearney commanded the USS Alexandria (SSN 757) from June 2003 to December 2005. During this period, his ship was awarded the Battle E for operational excellence; was runner up for the prestigious Battenberg Cup Award for top ship in the Atlantic Fleet; and received the Navy Unit Commendation for operations conducted during the first around the world deployment via the Arctic by a U.S. submarine.
Following command, Kearney entered the acquisition professional community in 2006 and served as the deputy director of the Navy’s Test and Evaluation Policy Office, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) N912. He then served as the Foreign Military Sales Program manager in the Undersea Weapons Program Office (PMS 404) and as deputy program manager in the Submarine Acoustic Systems Program Office (PMS 401).
Kearney served as the program manager for Undersea Weapons and Targets from October 2009 to October 2012. During this period his program was awarded a Secretary of the Navy Excellence in Acquisition Award and he was the recipient of the 2011 Naval Submarine League’s Vice Admiral J. Guy Reynolds Award for Excellence in Submarine Acquisition. He served as vice commander, Naval Sea Systems Command from June 2013 to April 2014 when he established the Acquisition, Commonality and Expeditionary Warfare Directorate (SEA 06) as a new directorate within NAVSEA.
His awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), and various other personal, campaign and unit awards” (United States Navy).

When placing a call, a soldier on the field must provide the 9 most important facts about the scenario so the most effective help can be sent. The process is uniform across all branches of service to ensure ease of communication. For many Veterans, a war within begins as soon as they arrive home. At Project9line we believe these Veterans need a 9 Line on the home front as well.
Patrick’s Story:
Patrick Donohue is a recently discharged combat Veteran. I served with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team “STRIKE” 101st Airborne Division. I was very lucky to end up in the unit I did. My duties varied throughout my service, but I guess the most important thing I did was that I was my Colonel’s assistant in combat. I wore many hats under this job description. I had the honor of meeting General Petraeus. We were deployed to Kandahar province Afghanistan during the bloodiest year on record for this conflict 2010-2011.
I got my college degree in 2004. I was a father, a husband, a homeowner, a small business owner, and had fulfilled my lifelong dream of becoming a stockbroker, but I still felt empty. So, I followed in my Father’s footsteps and I joined the Army. I really wanted to play my part in protecting our freedom. When I returned home, I realized how hard it was to readjust. All I could think of is how the other Veterans were dealing with reintegration. I started Project9line to help the Veterans become civilians again” (Project 9 Line).

Ms. Katina Shaw serves as the Vice President of Community Relations for the Milwaukee Brewers. Shaw shares stories of the community engagement activities she leads on behalf of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball organization. She encourages students to seek out internships and mentors to help them to develop in their life and career. Ms. Shaw finds that living as an authentic leader is an important component in life and speaks of the value of baseball as a social institution.
“Shaw joined the Brewers organization as a community relations assistant in 2006 after spending the previous seven years as market manager for the American Diabetes Association. She was promoted to community relations director in 2009 and named senior director in 2011.
Shaw [oversees] the Community Relations Department, working directly with players and coaches as the liaison between the front office and the community. As part of her role, Shaw is responsible for the creation and management of community programs such as the "Beyond the Diamond" outreach initiative, the coordination of activities and programs for Brewers Wives, and all alumni relations initiatives. She also plays a leadership role in the Brewers diversity and inclusion programs” (mlb.com, 2020).

Mr. Jon Shestakofsky serves as the Vice President of Communications and Education at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Shestakofsky shares his background and pleasure in traveling from Minor League Baseball to World Series Championships in Major League Baseball to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. For Shestakofsky, it is all about the people and their stories.
“A 2005 graduate of Wesleyan University and a native of Belmont, Mass., Shestakofsky [was] working his 13th year in baseball in 2016, having spent parts of the last 10 seasons with the Boston Red Sox beginning in 2007. In his most recent role with the Red Sox, Shestakofsky served as a liaison for media, players, and staff, and led all baseball information efforts. He also made significant contributions to publications ranging from game notes to media guide and the Red Sox magazine.
Shestakofsky began his baseball career with the Lowell Spinners in 2004 and has worked the last nine postseasons for the Red Sox and Major League Baseball. In his new role with the Hall of Fame, Shestakofsky will oversee the Museum’s communications, education, and outreach efforts” (Baseballhall.org, 2016).

Retired Navy Chief Bryan Exum shares the story of marrying during his Navy retirement ceremony and the challenges and rewards of representing over 70,000 sailors, Marines, Department of Navy personnel and family assigned to his global organization. Exum associates valor with courage and values: doing the right thing at all times and following the Navy’s core values: Honor, Courage, Commitment.
“Bryan Exum retired from the Navy after 33 years of service. His last assignment was the Command Master Chief for Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) located in Washington, DC. While at NAVSEA, he led a team of active duty and retired military personnel that searched for, collected, and returned personal effects to over 3,000 people forced to evacuate a building during a high-profile tragic incident.
Bryan is a native of Chester, Pennsylvania and a 1983 graduate of Chester High School. He enlisted in January 1984 and completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida. His challenging and rewarding tours included command master chief of Program Executive Office Ships, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and USS Stout (DDG 55). Additionally, his sea assignments were aboard frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. His shore assignments were in Puerto Rico; Great Lakes, Illinois; and multiple tours at the Washington Navy Yard, D.C. Bryan authored multiple articles in the Association of the United States Navy periodical as the National Vice President of Enlisted Affairs. He is a Lifetime Member of the Surface Navy Association, member of Fleet Reserve Association and on the selection panel for the annual nationally recognized Black Engineer of the Year Award.
Bryan attended the National Defense University’s Keystone course and Naval Postgraduate School Navy Senior Leader Seminar. He is a graduate of the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, and the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. He holds a Master of Arts degree from Webster University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Illinois University. “Jim Folk spent his 38th season in Major League Baseball and his 28th with the Cleveland Indians in 2019. Folk joined the organization in June of 1992 as Director of Ballpark Operations and was elevated to Vice President of Ballpark Operations in November of 2001.
As Vice President of Ballpark Operations Jim is responsible for all activities at Progressive Field, which includes ushering, security and police, guest services, maintenance, custodial, playing field, and parking activities. He works with Gateway Economic Development Corporation on lease, management, maintenance, and capital repairs issues and with the city of Cleveland on the staffing of the public safety crews at and around Progressive Field. Jim was heavily involved in the design and construction activities of the ballpark and oversaw the 1993 final series at Cleveland Stadium and the 1994 opening at the then Jacobs Field. He acted as the Cleveland Indians Project Manager for the Goodyear Spring Training/Player Development Complex and Ballpark, overseeing design and construction activities from 2007-2009.
Since joining the Indians Jim has overseen Major League Baseball’s All-Star game (1997), three World Series (1995, 1997, and 2016), and a total of 45 postseason home games at Progressive Field, along with the then Major League record of 455 consecutive sell-out games, with more than forty million fans walking through the gates. In addition, he has assisted Major League Baseball and/or the home club in the execution and supervision of All-Star Games in Baltimore (1993), Philadelphia (1996), and Chicago (2003), and World Series in New York (2001 & 2009), Chicago (2005), and Detroit (2006).
Jim, who earned a degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1984, is a member of the American Society of Industrial Security, International Association of Venue Managers, National Fire Protection Association, Stadium Managers Association, and serves on advisory committees to Major League Baseball’s Security & Facility Management Department. He currently serves as Chairman of the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation and on the Boards of Directors of the Congregation of St. Joseph Ministries, Downtown Cleveland Alliance, and Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation. Enrique Acosta Gonzalez speaks about his background as a meteorologist and enlisted leader in the United States Navy. Mr. Gonzalez refers to selfless leadership with the mindset of helping making people’s lives better and incorporating the personal component of leading others.
“Enrique has served as an Executive, Businessman, Veteran & Advocate, Board Member, Non-Profit Administrator, Speaker, Mentor, Coach, and Avid Volunteer. Over the past 20 years, Enrique has held numerous executive advisor and senior positions while serving in the United States Navy and civilian sector. Through education and training, he helped strengthen the chain of command, providing sound decision support and creating open communication at all levels. Enrique also helped formulate and implement policies concerning morale, welfare, job satisfaction, discipline, and training of Navy and civilian personnel.
His performance won him the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He was named 2013, 2014, and 2017 Mentor of the Year, and recipient of the inaugural 2014 Chief John Dungan Jr. Oceanographer of the Navy Award. He was also awarded The Arnold Fletcher Award and inducted into the SALUTE National honors society for his academic achievements.
Enrique remains involved in the Armed Services as an active volunteer for various projects and non-profits, earning him the esteemed Bronze, Silver and Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award.
He graduated from the Command Leadership Course, Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, holds an A.S. from Excelsior College, a B.A. in Natural Sciences and Mathematics from Thomas Edison State University, and is currently completing his M.B.A with Herzing University.

Judge Michael Allen speaks about his path to serving as one of nine judges on the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the youngest federal court, created in 1988. Appeals of all benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs are heard by the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Judge Allen speaks about the family members and teachers who mentored him and made a difference in his life. Hear his special stories of visiting the White House to interview for the seat on the bench before being confirmed by the Senate in August of 2017, when Chief Justice John Roberts swore him in and the unique impact a lawyer had in his parents’ lives. Judge Allen explains that the goal of a judge is much like that of a baseball umpire: to get it right.
“Judge Michael Allen was nominated by the President of the United States in June 2017. He was confirmed by the United States Senate, and appointed a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims in August 2017. United States District Judge Elizabeth Kovachevich of the Middle District of Florida administered the judicial oath to Judge Allen on August 11, 2017.
For 16 years before his judicial appointment, Judge Allen was a tenured full professor of law at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. He was also the director of Stetson's Veterans Law Institute, and he spent four years as the College of Law's associate dean. Judge Allen also served as a visiting professor of law at the University of Illinois College of Law. Before entering teaching, Judge Allen practiced law for nine years in the litigation department of the Boston-based international law firm Ropes & Gray.
Judge Allen graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rochester earning bachelor's degrees in American history and political science. He received his juris doctor from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar during his final two years.
As a professor, Judge Allen taught courses in constitutional law, civil procedure, federal courts, remedies, and veterans benefits law. He has been a prolific author, cowriting two books and more than 25 articles and essays. Judge Allen also received numerous awards for his scholarship and teaching including the Stetson University Award for Excellence in Scholarship, the Brown-Dickerson Award for Excellence in Scholarship, the Stetson University Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Stetson University Award for Excellence in Professionalism and Career Development. He also received the Stetson's Golden Apple Award for teaching and was twice named the best all-around professor.
Judge Allen was also a frequent speaker at community and professional groups while in legal education. Among his speaking engagements were featured roles at the judicial conferences of the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In addition, Judge Allen testified before the Veterans' Affairs Committees of both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives.
Before taking the bench, Judge Allen was active in professional associations. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Southeastern Association of Law Schools and was the Chair of the American Association of Law Schools' sections on Remedies and New Law Teachers. In 1999 he was selected as a Command Master Chief and served at the following commands: Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO THREE and Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN at NAS Oceana, VA, USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) at Norfolk, VA, and Navy Region Mid-Atlantic at Norfolk, VA.
In 2009 he was selected as the Manpower, Personnel, Training, and Education Fleet Master Chief and served as the Senior Enlisted advisor to the Chief of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC. During his time as the Fleet Master Chief he was best known for his development of Power Of Positive (POP) Leadership and the founder of the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) as well as advising the Chief of Naval Personnel and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy on policy development and execution. Scott completed his 30 years of service as the Fleet Master Chief in March 2013 and resides in Stafford, Virginia with his wife of 36 years, Cheryl Benning. Both sons serve in the U.S. Navy. The oldest, Anthony, serves as a navy civilian Director of Sports, Fitness, and Aquatics for Naval Station Norfolk married to his wife Darcie and two son’s Cole and Hunter. The younger son, Jason, serves as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer stationed in COMOPTEVFOR in Norfolk, Va and is married to his wife Brianna and two daughters Evelyn and Gracelyn.
Scott was sworn into service as a government service employee on July 29, 2013 and served five years in the Department of the Navy Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, a year as the Director of Management for Director, Navy Staff and now serves as the Director of Operations for Director, Navy Staff in Washington DC.
Scott is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, the Navy Corporate Business Course at the University of North Carolina, graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education and Development. He has also served as a plank-owner member of the Board of Directors for the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation and is a published author of his book Power Of Positive Leadership.

Rear Admiral Frank Thorp speaks about his family’s longstanding service, within and outside of the military. Rear Admiral Thorp speaks about being in the Pentagon on 9/11 and reminds listeners that valor is not a word to be taken lightly.
“In his final active duty assignment in the Navy, Rear Adm. (ret) Frank Thorp, IV was the U.S. Navy’s Chief of Information (CHINFO), serving as principal spokesman for the Department of the Navy and providing strategic communication counsel to the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations. He led the Navy’s Public Affairs community of more than 2,500 active and reserve officer, enlisted, and civilian communication professionals.
Prior to this assignment, Thorp served as the deputy assistant secretary of defense (joint communication) where he was responsible for overseeing Department of Defense (DoD) efforts to shape department-wide communication doctrine, organization, and training for the joint force. As director of the strategic communication integration group (SCIG) secretariat, Thorp also led DoD efforts for strategic communication auspices of the deputy secretary of defense, DoD strategic communication plans.
He served as the special assistant for public affairs to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2003 until 2005. In 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Thorp was deployed to Qatar as the chief of media for U.S. Central Command (forward).
From 2000 to 2003, he served as special assistant for public affairs to the Chief of Naval Operations. His other assignments have included serving as the public affairs officer for the Bureau of Naval Personnel; Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Joint Task Force Middle East; Cruiser Destroyer Group 12 and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). He has also served as director of public affairs and congressional notification at the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs.
Thorp has also had several previous assignments at the Navy’s Office of Information. As a commander, he served as assistant chief of information for media operations. Other assignments include executive assistant to the chief of information, national news desk action officer, and aide to the chief of information.
Prior to specializing in public affairs, Thorp served as a surface warfare officer forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan.
In 1999, Thorp completed a fellowship at Hill & Knowlton Worldwide Public Affairs in Washington D.C. He has a master’s degree in broadcast journalism and public affairs from American University and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College. Thorp is a 1986 graduate of the Defense Information School and a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in operations analysis.

Captain Greg Zettler speaks about lessons of integrity as a priority of his education at the United States Naval Academy. Captain Zettler speaks about the significance of service and recommends one assumes that everyone on their team has noble intent. Captain Zettler stresses the importance of creating individual ownership of the collective mission. The best advice Captain Zettler has received was to not try to by perfect: to rely on his innate ability and the training he has been provided. Zettler’s advice for those entering the military is relevant life advice for any person, especially youth: “Come in ready to learn, ready to work hard, ready to embrace the opportunities that come your way. Mr. Buster Olney shares his upbringing around the game of baseball, his career as a sports columnist covering the game, Hall of Fame voting and personal memories and stories from baseball legends Tony Gwynn and Jerry Coleman, including Gwynn’s gregarious personality and Coleman’s humility towards his service and respect for his comrades who did not return home from war.
Jerry Coleman: Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Coleman is the only Major League Baseball player to serve in combat in two wars, flying 57 combat missions in the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber during World War II and 63 close air support and interdiction strike missions earning six more Air Medals during the Korean War. Lieutenant Colonel Coleman was selected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as the Ford C. Frick Award recipient as an announcer in 2005 (Bob Feller Foundation).
Buster Olney: “Robert “Buster” Olney is a senior writer for ESPN.com and reporter for ESPN’s exclusive Sunday Night Baseball telecasts. He joined ESPN in June 2003 to cover baseball for all ESPN entities, including ESPN Radio, ESPNEWS and SportsCenter. He writes a daily column for ESPN.com and hosts the popular Baseball Tonight podcast as well as appearing on ESPN’s baseball studio show by the same name.
Olney’s two favorite events he has covered for ESPN are the 2014 and 2016 postseasons. “Particularly,” he said, “the historic performances of Madison Bumgarner.”
Olney began covering baseball in 1989 as the Nashville Banner’s beat reporter for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. He later covered the San Diego Padres for the San Diego Union-Tribune (1993 – 1994) and the Baltimore Orioles (Baltimore Sun, 1995 – 1996). "Baseball saw some of its biggest transformations in the 1940s and 50s. The introduction of night games, television, racial desegregation, and prevalence of jet travel all had a profound impact on how the game was forever played, observed, and experienced. Through these unprecedented times stood Carl Erskine, famed pitcher of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, and a witness to history.
Upon high school graduation in 1945, Erskine’s aspiration to play baseball came to a halt. With World War II in full swing, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. A year later, Erskine introduced himself to the Navy recreation officer where he was stationed, and asked if he could play baseball. Already full of pitchers, he was turned away, but soon found consolation a few weeks later when scouted by the Dodgers and discharged from the Navy. Erskine spent the next year and a half in the minor leagues, at the time of widespread historical change in baseball.
While playing in 1947, baseball legend Jackie Robinson came on board the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first African American player in Major League history. After pitching in a challenging game in the spring of 1948, Robinson, who had watched Erskine pitch that game, befriended him and said, “You’re going to be with us real soon.” Truly inspired and with a great sense of optimism, Robinson’s prediction came true. Later that year, Erskine joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.
In the late ‘40s, television was beginning to permeate American society and millions of people started to see baseball in a new way. No longer restricted to archaic radio waves, the heroes of the sport now had faces to go along with their larger-than-life reputations–another milestone that would eternally change the nature of games.
Throughout the 1950s, air travel changed the way people moved across the country. With West Coast cities experiencing dramatic population increases, the major leagues started to expand. In 1957, the Dodgers left Brooklyn, New York and headed to California to become the Los Angeles Dodgers. Erskine, who did not like being away from his family, decided that relocating was not for him. He lasted only a year and a half and pitched his last game on June 4, 1959. His career spanned 12 seasons and accumulated 122 wins (.61).
After retiring from baseball, Erskine returned to his native Indiana and started his own insurance business in 1960. For 12 years, he coached the Anderson University Raven baseball program winning four championship games. While in the insurance business, he sharpened his business acumen and landed a job at Star Financial Bank serving as its president and director from 1982-1993. Erskine has also given his time and talents to many organizations, sitting on the board of trustees of Anderson University, St. John’s Medical Center, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and numerous other state and civic institutions.
Erskine was inducted into the Indiana National Baseball Hall of fame in 1979. In 2001, he wrote his first book, Tales from the Dodger Dugout, a collection of heartwarming stories recounting his days in the major leagues. Four years later, he penned his memoir, What I Learned from Jackie Robinson, sharing his memories of Jackie’s battle for racial equality and their enduring friendship that taught him important lessons about life.

Anne’s father was a batboy for the Cloudbuster Nine, a World War II team of fighter-pilot cadets at an elite Navy training school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. On the twentieth episode of the American Valor Podcast, we are honored to be joined by the 75th Secretary of the Navy: the Honorable Ray Mabus. "Mr. Mabus served as the 75th United States Secretary of the Navy, the longest to serve as leader of the Navy and Marine Corps since World War I. Throughout his tenure, Secretary Mabus has focused on four key priorities - People, Platforms, Power and Partnerships – that enable the Navy and Marine Corps' unique ability to maintain the global presence that reassures our allies and deters our adversaries.
Before his appointment by President Obama, Mabus held a variety of leadership positions. From 1988 to 1992, Mabus served as Governor of Mississippi, the youngest elected to that office in more than 150 years. Mabus was Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1994-1996 and later was Chairman and CEO of a manufacturing company which he led out of bankruptcy.
Mabus has been recognized for his leadership of the Navy and Marine Corps on multiple occasions. In 2013, he was named one of the top 50 highest rated CEOs by Glassdoor, an online jobs and career community. Mabus was the only person in government to receive this award.
Secretary Mabus is a native of Ackerman, Mississippi, and received a Bachelor's Degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Mississippi, a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a Law Degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. After Johns Hopkins, Mabus served in the Navy as an officer aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock” (defense.gov).
Mabus encourages listeners to believe you can do whatever you put your mind to. He describes being in the United States Navy as one of the defining experiences of his life, teaching Mr. Mabus what it means to be part of a team.

Over the course of his career, Bill met and spoke personally with National Baseball Hall of Famer and proud veteran of the United States Navy, Chief Petty Officer Bob Feller, developing a personal relationship with Mr. Feller. Mr. Tunnell was honored to speak at Mr. Feller's memorial service in 2010.
Mr. Tunnell shares stories and lessons of the USS Alabama battleship, including service to country, America’s military, and the incredible life and legacy of Chief Petty Officer Bob Feller. Some values of those who served on the ship include comradeship, brotherhood, and patriotism. Bill exclaims a job and life very well done for Bob Feller.
The Battleship Memorial Park has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors each year since 1965: “More than fifteen million visitors later and a statewide economic impact approaching one billion dollars, the Park is easily the most recognizable symbol of the State of Alabama. Dedicated to all Alabama Citizens who have worn the uniform of all branches of the United States Armed Forces, the Park’s numerous artifacts, exhibits, and displays all point to the fact that the Park is America’s most unique military attraction” (ussalabama.com).
Bill Tunnell attended the University of the South, majoring in history with an emphasis on American History. Bill has served in various business roles throughout his career. Tunnell was named "Honorary Veteran" by the South Alabama Veterans Council and was the first inductee into the Alabama Tourism Hall of Fame.

On the American Valor Podcast, Mr. Steve Gonzalez preaches the importance of being better each day. Steve joined the Marine Corps because he realized that doing so aligned with what he wanted to achieve in life: service to country as a means of believing in something bigger than himself. Doug Flynn grew up playing several sports in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky and Somerset Community College before playing 11 seasons in Major League Baseball for the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers. Mr. Flynn was a member of the 1975 Big Red Machine team that won the World Series. He is currently a broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds and actively supports service men and women through multiple non-profit organizations, including Hope for the Warriors (supporting injured veterans and their families) at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, USACares (supporting family members of military personnel) and Save the Warriors (supporting veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder/PTSD).
Mr. Flynn speaks about his blessed childhood growing up in Kentucky and the impact of playing several sports including basketball and baseball at the University of Kentucky. He shares stories of trying out for the Cincinnati Reds and his tribulations rising through the team’s minor league system before playing with the Big Red Machine and National Baseball Hall of Fame managers Sparky Anderson and Joe Torre in his Major League career. Doug shares lessons learned from some of the greatest coaches and players of his generation.
Doug preaches playing for the team name on the front of the jersey rather than the name on the back and speaks to the importance of community involvement, sharing stories of his support for service men and women, often with his good friend National Baseball Hall of Famer and Bob Feller Award recipient Mr. Johnny Bench. Major Lennon speaks about his decision to join the Marine Corps and his service in both the active and reserve components of the Marine Corps, as well as his decision to attend law school. In 2010, Major Lennon deployed to Afghanistan, receiving the Purple Heart and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his service to our country. Major Lennon then went on earn his Doctor of Law degree from the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, where he currently serves as Director of the Veterans and Servicemembers’ Rights’ Clinic.
Major Lennon encourages individuals interested in the military to research the four branches and speaks about the close connection among members of the military and the significance arising from service to others and country.
As an advisor to the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation and a community athlete for the Semper Fi Fund, an organization assisting injured veterans in all branches of the armed forces, Major Lennon became a Guinness World Record holder in the summer of 2019. His effort to earn the fastest one mile time pulling a 400 pound chain raised over $6,000 for the Semper Fi Fund.

Vice Admiral John “Jay” Donnelly (United States Navy, Retired) is Vice President of Advanced Technologies for Huntington Ingalls Industries. Jay serves as an active Board Member of the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation. Donnelly graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1975 and served 35 years in the Navy. A submarine officer by training, his commanding officer assignments included USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) and USS McKee (AS 41). His final assignment was as Commander, Submarine Forces, responsible for establishing force-wide strategies on core submarine issues such as force structure, budgetary requirements and manpower.
Vice Admiral Donnelly speaks about what it means to be part of a three generation Naval family and the values he developed at the Naval Academy: integrity, honor and service above one’s self. Learn about life on a submarine and the rationale behind the decisions to allow women to serve in the submarine force and the elimination of smoking on submarines.
Vice Admiral Donnelly encourages young people to start their career in the military because it prepares one for success in life. Military service is an opportunity to develop self-discipline, teamwork and the other skills critical for success in any field: communication, leadership, integrity, doing things right and doing hard things well.
For Vice Admiral Donnelly, valor is the application of sacrifice and service to others in a time of great peril. To live with valor means to act with valor.

In our twelfth installment, Dr. CJ Mitchell, the 15th Force Master Chief of the Navy Reserve, chats with the podcast team of Nathaniel Cameron, Tyler Buchholz and Colin Kirk. Dr Mitchell discusses his career in the Navy, transition to civilian life and CJ's concept of leadership, including his rule of three. CJ has held several leadership positions in the Navy at every level and frequently speaks and facilitates leadership training for the United States Navy. He has facilitated training for senior Flag Officers for both active and reserve leaders in all services. As Force Master Chief, CJ represented and advocated for the Navy Reserve on Capitol Hill with Congress and worked with local politicians working on cooperative and collaborative programs for veteran and reserve personnel employment, education, and leadership programs.

Mr. Johnny Bench speaks about his upbringing in Oklahoma, which was the inspiration for his values of hard work that he learned from his parents, as his father served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Bench and the team spoke about the fulfillment of his lifelong dream of becoming a Major League Baseball catcher at the age of 19 and eventually winning two World Series with the Big Red Machine.
Mr Bench served six years in the Army Reserves while playing professional baseball and was named the 2018 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award recipient from the Hall of Fame. Mr Bench supports Hope for the Warriors, a national non-profit organization aiding combat wounded service members, their families and families of those killed in action.
