Conversations are a crucial life skill. They are literally the way in which we communicate with one another, relate to each other, and feel seen, valued, and heard. It’s something we start practicing as soon as we begin to talk. Even so, we struggle to be able to have deep, meaningful conversations with others; especially with strangers. But what could happen if we were able to change that? What could we learn from each other if we were able to learn to listen well and communicate well with people? As it turns out, Dr. Heather Holleman has discovered that there are six primary topics that we, as humans, prefer to converse about. At Forerunner Mentoring, they help boys meet their potential and become Men of God through implementing after school mentoring programs in the local public schools and matching students who don’t have father figures with a one-on-one mentor. To facilitate those programs, they employ “coaches” in their after school programs. The job of these coaches is to mentor the students in group settings, each working with a specific grade or group of kids. As is the case with working with any group of kids, discipline is a constant element of these programs, and each coach handles that discipline in a slightly different way within the guidelines at Forerunner. In our most recent series, Josh took over the podcast to talk with each of the coaches about the why behind their mentoring activities. For the season finale of You Can Mentor, Josh brings all of them back for one massive roundtable where they talk about anything and everything mentoring. Listen in this week to hear Josh, Joel, Ryan, Jamari, and Holden talk about some crazy topics including the strengths and weaknesses of each coach, their experiences in program, integrity within mentoring, and how mentors who aren’t involved in mentoring alongside each other can gain and benefit from the same type of community that we coaches do.

When someone thinks about mentoring, they think about the child. They think about the benefit they’re receiving of having somebody guide them and show them the way. They think about the growth of the child and the potential they have. They may even think about the experiences the mentee may have. Rarely, however, do they think about the relationship from the perspective of the mentor. They may acknowledge the mentor’s presence and intentionality, but they don’t typically think about the humility and sacrifice the mentor has had in order to continue to show up. At Forerunner Mentoring, the core value of the organization is “Relationships Change Lives”. It’s the idea that by investing in kids, their lives are forever being changed. But that investment goes both ways. The mentor benefits just as much from the relationship as the mentee does. Maxwell Owen, one of Forerunner’s one-on-one volunteer mentors (not a coach in the after school mentoring program) joins Josh this week on his summer takeover series to talk about spontaneity in mentoring, modeling humility, the benefits he’s seen in himself from mentoring, and why he chooses to volunteer as a mentor.

Mentoring boys without father figures means playing the role of the father in that boy’s life, while simultaneously acknowledging that you are NOT their father. With that unique position is an ability to have hard conversations with them and to lead them in the path of righteousness. But in order to be effective in doing those things, you first need to be modeling them in your own life. Leading a boy in his walk with Jesus means pursuing your own walk with Jesus first. Leading a mentee in integrity means walking a life of integrity. These are the themes that Holden Royals touches on in this week’s episode. Forerunner’s 4th-5th grade coach, Holden Royals joins Josh on his summer takeover to talk through a lot of theology, his personal bible study habits, having direct and candid conversations with his boys as a rebuttal to Hell’s own direct attacks, and his why behind mentoring.

One of the coolest moments in a mentoring relationship is to see the fruit of your labors start to flourish. When you get dragged down by the details of the current situation or start to think that you haven’t made an impact on your mentee, it can be hard to focus on the positive or to wonder why you’re doing it in the first place. In those moments, looking back at where your relationship started and comparing it to where you are now can be insightful and encouraging. It can give you the motivation to keep going and pressing in to the hard times. Jamari Maloy has a story from the perspective of the mentee and the growth he saw. He joins Josh on his summer takeover “Why I Mentor” series to talk through his experiences as a Forerunner that then joined the team to mentor younger students, the things he’s learned and grown in through being a Forerunner coach, and why he jumped into being a coach right after he graduated high school and the Forerunner program.

Sometimes, God does something in your life that just doesn’t make any sense. He may take something away or put you in a new position that you don’t feel like you’re qualified for. He may move you across the country, or change the demographic of the people you thought you were called to minister to. But at the end of the day, God’s plan supersedes yours, and that’s something Ryan Raleigh has learned. Mentoring in a group setting takes on a whole new set of challenges compared to individual mentoring. You show up and pour into multiple kids all at the same time. You need to be able to see not just the needs of one person, but multiple kids simultaneously and meet those needs all at the same time. You get pulled in multiple directions and need to be able to handle that all with grace and poise. It’s a challenge, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to get to see the growth of each student and the fruit of the seeds you’ve been planting throughout the year. This week, Caitlyn Moudy, the instructional coach in Forerunner Mentoring’s K-6 After School Mentoring Program joins Josh on his summer takeover to talk through how her role as a mentor has evolved in the last three years, who on Forerunner’s staff has poured into her, some fire scriptures that hit home for mentors and teachers, and why she shows up every day to mentor the boys at Forerunner.

The crucial differences which distinguish human societies and human beings are not biological. They are cultural. This quote by Ruth Benedict proves to be true time and time again. Society is determined by how that group of people operate. Each person belongs to at least one culture, and often belong to several subcultures at the same time. And yet, with all of these different cultures out there, people tend not to know how a person from another culture operates. Cultures can teach us a whole new world view, and while that doesn't necessarily mean we need to adopt that culture, it can certainly help us relate to the people in that culture. Mentoring is often a bridge between cultures. The mentor will more than likely have a different set of experiences in their life than their mentee will. Zach and John are back this week to talk through what kinds of things different cultures can teach us, how we can be open to learning from other cultures in our mentoring relationships, and how all of that factors in to Zach walking into a skate shop in Waco.

One of the core values at Forerunner Mentoring is "trust the process". It's this idea that as a mentor, you're not always going to see the fruit of your mentoring relationship. You may be sowing seeds that won't blossom until years after your official mentoring relationship with your mentee ends, and that can be discouraging. But what you can do is operate in faith, knowing that God's in control of the relationship and that all of those negatives that you see are being worked together for His good purposes. Zach flies solo this week to bring an encouraging word about how we can trust the process in our mentoring relationships and trust in God's perfect timing.

It's this idea that prevents most mentors from actively sharing the gospel with their mentee while at school and can prove to be a hurdle for the organizations they volunteer with. Identity plus skills equals confidence. That is the equation that Stephen and special guest Chad Wallen from Advance Camp unpack as they discuss how encouraging mentees through practical, skill-based camps can impact their lives. Four Step Gospel-sharing Method
- God. God is the creator of all things (Gen. 1:1). He is perfectly holy, worthy of all worship, and will punish sin (1 John 1:5, Rev. 4:11, Rom. 2:5-8). Everything that is wrong, he will put to rights.
- Man. All people, though created good, have become sinful by nature (Gen. 1:26-28, Ps. 51:5, Rom. 3:23, Eph. 2:1-3). We are far from God, hostile to God, and deserving of judgment.
- Christ. Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man, lived a sinless life, died on the cross to bear God’s judgment in the place of all who would believe in him, and rose from the grave in order to give his people eternal life (John 1:1, 1 Tim. 2:5, Heb. 7:26, Rom. 3:21-26, 2 Cor. 5:21, 1 Cor. 15:20-22).
- Response. God calls everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and trust in Christ in order to be saved (Mark 1:15, Acts 20:21, Rom. 10:9-10). For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
Gospel-sharing Practicals
- The longer you wait in a relationship, the harder it becomes to share the gospel
- If you share the gospel early, you can center the relationship around it easily
- Use every day examples: receiving a bad grade & missing the mark (sin), etc.
- The greatest thing you bring into your mentor relationship is your relationship with Jesus Christ
- View your mentoring relationship through the lens of Christian discipleship.
- "We want our mentees to become productive Christians."
- Learn your mentee's culture and contextualize the gospel for them where they live.
- When Paul preached to Greeks he talked about greek philosophy and the stars, intellectually-minded
- When Paul preached to the Hebrews he spoke about Abraham and the OT fathers, historical OT oriented
- Try to find something that your mentee is interested in, and relate it to the Gospel
- Use language your mentee is comfortable with. Jesus used parables to communicate.
- Brainstorm/Plan out a personal illustration (use sports, food, fortnite, etc.)
- Connect your illustration to God as judge, our sin nature, or the love of Jesus on the cross
- Show them simply how sin is connected to their experiences
- The Gospel is GOOD NEWS. Proclaim God's victory over your mentee's life
- Recognize the privilege you have in sharing the good news with your mentee
Bible Devotions with Kids
- The Bible is a story. Connect everything to the bigger story (JESUS).
- Our job is to share it. Pass the ball to God.
- God is the master of taking what we give and using it for his purposes.
- Don't put too much emphasis on how well you share it.
- Story of Noah and the Flood. "Every time you see rain, God's making a promise to you with the rainbow."
- Help them live what they read.
- Don't bog yourself down in trying to articulate every detail.
- Share it (read) and show it (help them recognize the story in lived experiences).

HOW TO EARN YOUR MENTEE'S ATTENTION
1. Earn their attention by giving them yours.
- Youth mentoring is counter-cultural. You choose to earn your mentees attention, rather than them earning yours.
- When you think of Jesus becoming a man, do you see it as God seeking to get our attention, or do you see it as Him giving us His?
- The God of the Bible gives us His attention. He seeks us out. He listens.
- He is our example.
2. Earn their attention by finding out what brings them joy.
- What do they like and how can you connect with them in it? When we feel connected to another person, we're more open to their influence, so you're making it easy for them to listen and interact with you on their level.
- Get curious. What is going on in the brain of this child I’m mentoring? What questions do they have? What makes them wonder?
- Teachers know this already: when kids are curious, they're much more likely to stay engaged.
3. Earn their attention by commanding it, not demanding it.
- Jesus never demanded attention. His life commanded it. There’s a difference between someone walking in the room and saying, “Hey! Learn from me! I’m awesome!” and another person in the room that lives in such a way that draws the attention of others and creates this curiosity.
- Just because you say, “Hey, listen to me.” Doesn’t mean they are going to listen.
- There is nothing more comforting to a child than a mentor who listens and understands.

MORE PRACTICALS
Ask Good Questions
- You may be the first non-family member that has taken the time to push through all the distractions, ask them good questions, and fight for their attention. And by the way, good questions aren’t easy to answer. So if you’re asking good questions, their inability to respond quickly isn’t because their wheels aren’t turning, it might be because they’ve never even turned. Good questions cultivate our minds. There’s a study I read the other day that says When your brain is thinking about the answer to a question, it can’t contemplate anything else. So when we ask our mentees good questions we are helping their brains to grow in focus. If a child doesn’t respond to you when you talk it’s because their attention is elsewhere and they haven’t learned that questions show you care.
- Behavioral scientists have also found that just asking people about their future decisions significantly influences those decisions. When we ask good questions to kids from hard places, we’re planting seeds.
- Believe the best
Tips to help kids listen
- Connect before you speak. Eye contact.
- One step at a time. Use less words and less complex words.
- Don’t say don't. Whatever you put after ‘Don’t’ puts a picture in their head of what you just told them not to do.
- Be more assertive and less optional.
- Giving direction for what you want them to do is not a bad thing. It’s actually safe.
- Make every effort to stop what you are doing to listen to them.

Mentors help their mentees steer clear of actions or situations that would hurt them and hurt others. Whether you’re helping your mentee mature into adulthood, teaching them an age appropriate skill, or confronting a destructive behavior, here are some of the things we have found helpful for mentors to consider.
1. Earn the Right to Be Heard
- Don’t assume your mentee knows why you care for him
- Speed of Trust by Covey
- A kid doesn’t care what you know until he knows that you care
- Trust depends on your actions and their past
- Hard conversations require trust
- Give trust to build trust
2. Pick Your Battles
- Don’t rebuke every small thing
- Focus on what they’re doing right more than what they’re doing wrong
- Be wise and patient with them as they grow
- Is this a life or death issue?
- Are their actions ordinary for kids their age?
3. Prepare Wisely
- Pray before you engage in a difficult conversation
- Check yourself and your intentions
- Choose timing and environments wisely
- Share feedback toward the end of a meeting rather than the beginning
- In a quiet place where they can focus on what you’re telling them
4. Asking Permission
- Instead of just blurting out what they are doing wrong, you can saying something like this:
- “You know I love you and want the best for you, right?”
- “Well, I’ve noticed some things that might keep you from being the best version of you. Do you mind if I share those with you?”
- If they say yes, proceed with your feedback. If their answer is no, let it go
- Establish that sharing feedback is not the central part of the mentor relationship
5. Rebuke Thy Neighbor Like Thy self
- Put yourself in your mentee’s shoes
- Asking questions and getting them to think about the “why” behind their actions typically works better
- Ask questions instead of talking “at” or lecturing your mentee
- Share personal stories and examples to help them see the bigger picture
- Be careful with your tone
- If the child thinks you are judgemental, harsh, or angry, the possibility of them shutting down or getting angry are high
- We want the child to know that we are for them and that we believe the best about them
- Care more about their heart than their actions
- Grace oriented
6. Call them up, not out
- Call out their giftings and their potential
- Speak life over them
- Encourage them to do better and let them know that you are there for them in case things don’t go as planned
- Call them up to all that they can be instead of calling them out for what they have done wrong
7. You Can Lead a Horse to Water but You Can’t Make Him Drink
- We have to be ok with the fact that we have done all that the Lord has called us to do
- We invest, and God transforms
- God the Father is patient and gentle with us
- We must remember that we are dealing with children
- Love them no matter what

All mentors begin mentoring with a heart to make a positive difference in the life of a child. So often, we, as mentors, have in our mind what a successful mentoring relationship looks like.
Some times, success looks like:
- Academic achievements
- Dressing nicer
- Athletic success
- No sex, drugs or alcohol
- Better behavior
- No cussing
- Going to church
- Kindness, saying “yes ma'am” or “yes sir”, or handshake and making eye contact
Don’t get me wrong, these are all good things that will probably help set your child up for success in today’s world. But we cannot focus on these things. When we focus on outcomes, the enemy can make the child you are mentoring feel like a project and not a person.
When we have expectations that don’t get met, frustration can set in. When that negativity enters into a relationship, the enemy can use it to lie to you and wreck havoc on how you perceive your mentoring relationship.
Here are five keys to keep your heart in the right place while mentoring.
1. Don’t focus on outcomes.
- Focusing on outcomes leads you to see your mentee as a project
- Focus on being present more than you focus on their future.
2. People aren’t projects, they’re people.
- People don't progress like projects. We are never out of process. None are done.
- Relationships are warm and understanding. Projects are cold and calculating.
3. No formula for mentoring. Every relationship is different.
- "Spend time with a kid + Teaching him wise ways = Life Transformation." Sounds great, but it's not true
- Mentors are called to recognize the needs of the children they serve and be sensitive to God's leadership as the relationship grows
4. Love is not performance based.
- Our love comes with no strings attached. We love because he first loved us. We love no matter what.
5. Hope vs. Expectation
- Hope believes. Expectations assume.
- The kids we mentor should not have to carry the weight of our expectations
- Our hope in them and for them should carry their burdens, not be their burden.

- In mentoring, we are actively making a commitment to relationship. Commitments come with conflict.

- God loves when we face tension head on and learn to trust Him in it. When you face a trial in your mentoring relationship, don’t let it discourage or deter you from moving forward.
- Difficulty is not failure. Facing difficulty in the relationship is not a clear cut sign that the mentor relationship is failing. It may actually be a sign that it’s working.
2. Mentoring is a Marathon.
- We’re in it for the long haul. Sometimes what you say today won’t actually register until years down the road.
- Tackle today's issues, not tomorrows problems.
- In a marathon, some miles are a lot tougher than others. You’ll have seasons where it’s uphill. Seasons where it’s downhill. Find your rhythm, and stick with it when it gets tough.
- Don’t expect them to change overnight.
- Don’t compare yourself to other mentor relationships.
3. Celebrate every improvement.
- Ask yourself, “What’s the trajectory?” If you move an inch every week for a decade, you might look up and be rather impressed with the amount of ground you’ve covered.
- You will gain so much more ground if you tell a kid what he is doing right instead of what he is doing wrong. Focus on the positive. If he is doing one thing right and ten things wrong, focus on the good. The rest can wait.
- Celebrate the wins. Focus on the good. Be your mentees biggest fan.
- When you encourage someone, you show your committedness to their growth. You are interested in their flourishing. If you can’t find something to encourage, it’s more about your committedness to them than their lack of performance.
- No kid has been celebrated too much.
- Something is encouraging them, and that encouragement is influencing their identity.
- In a world that assumes the worst, we are going to believe the best and call it out.

- “I really like being around you.”
- “Thanks for letting me hang out with you.”
- “I’ve been looking forward to seeing you.”
- “You matter to me.”
- “You’re important.”
Praying for your mentee:
- Doesn’t have to be anything fancy.
- Thank Jesus for your relationship.
- Thank Jesus for loving us no matter what.
- Thank Jesus for always being there for us.
Remember to:
- Pray before you meet up with them. Ask the Lord to bless your time!
- Focus on the positive. Build them up!
- Come to connect, not correct.
- Ask open ended questions
Questions to ask:
- What made you smile today?
- What was the funniest thing that happened today?
- On a scale from 1-5, how would you rate today?
- What is something you learned today?
- What are you looking forward to?Keep the conversation going by asking:
- Tell me more about that?
- Ask 'Why' questions
- Why did that make you laugh?
- Why did that make you smile?
- That’s happened to me, let me tell you about it...
- Ask about family members.
- Ask about their weekend.
- Ask about their friends.
