Seafarers spend long periods of time at sea – sometimes working in very tough conditions. They leave their families for months on end, and for some, that means missing pivotal events – like the birth of a child. Roy is a Filipino seafarer who is in exactly this position. He works as an able-bodied seaman and cook on a small vessel. His girlfriend is about to give birth but he's seven months into a standard 10-month contract – his fourth as a seafarer. Edo State is in southern Nigeria. Statistics show that 94% of Nigerian women trafficked out of the country and exploited in the sex trade come from Edo. This localised problem with far-reaching human consequences has come to the attention of the UK's Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Kevin Hyland.
He has travelled to the region to partner with the Catholic Church and local authorities and organisations to help stem the flow of young women onto the streets of Europe's capital cities. He has also met the mothers and fathers of victims. "In Edo State the only message being given is the one coming from the criminals. And that message is 'Let's go to Europe and other parts of the world where you will become wealthy.'"
Commissioner Hyland has a three-fold approach to tackling the problem. Firstly by working with the community - awareness raising. Secondly, reinforcing the rule of law to punish the criminals - working with NAPTIP, Nigeria's National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons, to increase its capacity. Thirdly, to incentivise people to stay by make local business, particularly agri-business, commercially viable so workers can earn a decent wage from their produce. #slavery #trafficking #humanrights #freedom

Pope Francis will release his much-anticipated encyclical letter on Human Ecology on Thursday 18 June.
The inspiration for the title of the encyclical, Laudato si (On the Care of Our Common Home), comes from St Francis of Assisi’s famous hymn the 'Canticle of the Sun'. It's also known as the 'Canticle of the Creatures'.
Written in San Damiano in late 1224, where his follower St Clare founded her religious order of Franciscan sisters, the hymn expresses the mystical vision of St Francis and praises God for the gifts of creation like 'Sir Brother Sun', 'Sister Moon', 'Brother Wind', 'Sister Water', 'Brother Fire' and 'Sister Mother Earth'.

The Holy Land Coordination meets every January in the Holy Land, focusing on prayer, pilgrimage and persuasion with the aim of acting in solidarity with the Christian community there and sharing in the pastoral life of the local Church as it experiences intense political and social-economic pressure.
