DISCO SOUR joined forces with Librebook, an independent bookstore in Bruxelles for an event on worldbuilding on 14 June 2017.
Worldbuilding is the process of constructing an imaginary world, sometimes associated with a whole fictional universe. It’s an important element in creating stories told through books, movies, theatre, dance, and other artistic expressions. We tell a story, we create the world in which the story lives in.

Librebook is a multilingual, Babel style bookshop and cultural space bringing together contemporary literature in over 20 languages. In its first year of activity, it has developed into space where authors from all over Europe meet and interact both with the public and with fellow writers, going beyond the simple notion of book presentations and literature talks.
The event contributes to the writing of DISCO SOUR, a novel by Giuseppe Porcaro, set in a civil war-ravaged Europe where nation-states collapsed, a rump EU just about prevents anarchy, and tinder-like apps replace elections. It is a story about Bastian Balthazar Bux, a space-lover, a smartphone addict, a young political leader on the verge of a breakdown.

/// Pieter De Buysser is a writer, director and performing artist. He studied philosophy in Antwerp and Paris. His work is presented by many international festivals and organisations and is widely acclaimed in Flanders and abroad. Recurring themes in his work include the intertwining of fact and fiction, exercises in "sense of possibility" and the imaginary of resistance. In 2016 he founded with Thomas Bellinck ROBIN, a Brussels-based, collectively autonomous society for the production of tailor-made artistic work. The basic principle, solidarity among autonomous artists. He is currently central house artist in Kaaitheater, and artist in residence in Archa Theater in Prague. He currently prepares The After Party, a new play inspired by the legacy of Vaclav Havel, coproduced by Archa. "Le rire des moineaux" with Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris and "The tip of the tongue". The latter will be a coproduction with Théâtre les Amandiers in Paris-Nanterre and will be premiered during Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2017 in the Brussels Planetarium.
/// Giuseppe Porcaro is a geographer, a writer, a political scientist, and a lover. He heads the Communications’ team of Bruegel, the European think tank specialising in economic policy. Giuseppe explores the links between the concepts of future, utopia, hope and their geopolitical and social patterns. He has recently written about the impact of new technology, such as the Internet of Things, on politics and on the future of elections. He was Secretary General of the European Youth Forum between 2009 and 2014 and he holds a Ph.D. in Geography of Development from the University of Naples “L’Orientale”.
/// Jessica Woodworth is an American-Belgian film director, screenwriter, and producer known for King of the Belgians (2016), La cinquième saison (2012), Altiplano (2009) and Khadak (2006) made in collaboration with Belgian filmmaker Peter Brosens. These films have appeared in over 200 festivals including Cannes, Venice, Toronto, and Sundance and have won dozens of awards. In 2001 she made the documentary 'The Virgin Diaries' while on a Fulbright in Morocco. Prior to that, she worked in Paris, Hong Kong and Beijing for television documentaries. She received a BA from Princeton and an MA from Stanford. Her company, Bo Films, is based in Ghent. She is currently developing 'The Barefoot Emperor' and an adaptation of the Italian novel 'The Tartar Steppe'.

At a time when the political rhetoric seems to privilege a coming back of nationalisms as simplistic answers to the complex challenges of our economic, societal and political systems, we explore, in this episode, the theoretical foundations of a world where traditional state apparatuses become obsolete.
Our guest, Denis Maksimov, is the co-founder of the Avenir Institute (http://avenirinstitute.info), a think tank at the intersection of epistemology, politics, technology and aesthetics with a focus on critical analysis of potentiality in futures.
Denis delivered his “State of Noland” lecture during the recent EUROVISION event.

"What is the State of Noland? It is a condition of not aligning with nation state and particular geopolitical territory as well as possible formations of practical replacement of nation-state functionality with rhizomatic (“rhizome” - is a modified subterranean stem of a plant that is usually found underground, often sending out roots and shoots from its nodes), pastiche, assemblage alternatives. Nation state is a modern fiction, a child of Thomas Hobbes “Leviathan” and birth of nationalism in 19 century. None of the existing countries on the political map of today fulfil the requirements of the concept of nation state in political theory. Can we imagine the rhizomatic organs without the body (functionality without the current system frame), inverting and developing ideas of Antonin Artaud in theatre and and Gilles Deleuze in philosophy and applying it to politics?" Today we will discuss the concept of Tinderpolitics.
Tinderpolitics explores the differences between gay dating apps, such as Grindr, and straight dating apps, such as Tinder, through the actual encounter, dialogue, and unpack social and political agendas that each of them entail. In times where one's desires are just a swipe away, the model that satisfies the public of short attention span seems to be applicable also to other sides of life, such as different types of voting systems and opinion pools.
The world of dating apps might seem rather homogenous at the first sight, but different apps represent different strategies and intensity of encounter, and thus different agendas behind it, narratives unveiled during the performance. Through the apps, the relationship between consciousness and sensibility is transformed and the exchange of signs undergoes a process of increasing desensitazion, moving from the realm of conjunction to the one of connection, seen as the punctual and repeatable interaction of algorithmic functions.
