1 Samuel 18:1-16 How do we respond when someone else becomes more successful than us? 1 Samuel 18:1-16 highlights the danger of jealousy and pride as we compare ourselves to others, but also shows the difference that God’s presence in our lives can make.

Daniel 6-10 What makes a Christian stand out in a secular pluralist culture? Not necessarily by the behaviours we demonstrate, though they may well be different. The fundamental difference is seen at the foundational level: we act differently because we have encountered a Lord who is so life changing that we see everything differently. That’s what we learn from the book of Daniel: living holy lives is empowered by a distinct faith in a faithful God, a distinct love from a relational God and a distinct hope in a redeeming God.

Revelation 14:14-15:4 We all try to escape hostility. If we have a decision that will cause hostility and one that won’t, we all want to choose the one that won’t cause hostility. So why should Christians keep going with their faith if it causes hostility? Why face this unnecessary hostility? In Revelation 14 & 15, God presents two future pictures, one of final judgement and the other of final singing. Listen in as we explore how these pictures encourage us to keep going as Christians in the face of hostility.

Jonah 1:17-2:10 Jonah is a book of opposites. Jonah is told to go up, but he goes down, he deserves judgement but is saved instead. Come and see the prayer where God breaks and remakes Jonah. And consider Christ who was greater than Jonah and shows us even greater grace.

Acts 23:12-25:12 Facing plots, accusations, and trials, Paul shows that the gospel fulfils the Scriptures, gives the safest hope through the resurrection, and clears the conscience before God.
Acts 21:17 – 23:11 Facing false accusations, violent opposition, and unjust trials, Paul models flexibility for fellowship, a faithful defence, and fearless courage in Christ.
Acts 20:29–21:16 As Paul heads to Jerusalem he leaves warnings to be watchful! We need to listen to these if we are to keep going!
Acts 20:17–28 Paul’s goodbye to the Ephesian Elders is unforgettable, it’s a rallying call for the Christian life.
Isaiah 6:1-8 King Uzziah has died. Enemies surround Israel. Now is the perfect time for Isaiah to be reminded of the Holy God who offers cleansing and commissioning to this prophet who confesses his sin.
John 13:1-30 Jesus has embarked on a great washing project and he wants us to join him as he washes the whole world of its sin and shame. But do we really need washing? And can we really play a role in washing the whole world?
The Lord righteously judges in order to restore his people. This is a message of hope and justice.
1 John 5:13-21 We live in an uncertain world, and so much in our lives is uncertain too. What do you really know for sure? These final verses of the letter give us five things we know for sure, if we trust in Christ – five certainties to celebrate.
1 John 5:1-12 There’s a lot of talk nowadays about ‘people of faith’, as if it doesn’t really matter what you believe. But this passage makes clear that our faith must be in Jesus Christ. Such faith is transformational, rational, and essential.

anyone’s wish list. But how’s that going to happen? Where’s that going to come from? The Bible claims that Christianity has the answer.

1 John 4:1-6 There is growing interest in all kinds of spirituality – astrology, reincarnation, psychics, the healing power of crystals. What do you make of all this? Is it encouraging that at least people believe there is something beyond the material world? This passage tells us to beware – we need to test the spirits because not all are from God.
1 John 3:11-24 Do you have assurance that you know God and are saved? If so, why? Is your assurance built on a firm foundation? Some have false assurance, whereas others lack the assurance they should be enjoying. This passage tells us the right basis for assurance.
Acts 11:19–30 The Lord will build his church through the preaching and teaching of Christians, and the church is to be outward looking.
1 John 2:28-3:10 If you’re a Christian, does it matter how you live? If we’re saved by grace, not by our works, does that mean we can just live as we want? Do we have diplomatic immunity when it comes to sin and prosecution? This passage makes very clear that isn’t the case. If we don’t practice righteousness, we’re not part of God’s family.
1 John 2:15-27 All of us are concerned about threats to our physical health and life, but what about threats to our spiritual health and life? Is that as big a concern? It should be, given the consequences are eternal. In this passage we are warned about two particular threats which plagued the first century churches and are just as real and deadly today.
Acts 11:1–18 Gentiles are now included in trues Christianity! They possess the ‘hallmarks of a true Christian’. Do we?
Acts 10:1–48 How do you know that the church is for you? How can we be sure that God accepts us? Today we look at how the world turned upside down in Caesarea.
1 John 2:3-14 Of those who say they are Christian, some are and some aren’t. Some are the genuine article, whereas others are just wearing the label. Which are we? How do we know? In his letter the apostle John gives three tests, and we need to pass all three. In this passage we come to the third one.
Romans 10:9 ‘If you see something that doesn’t look right’… That could be the harsh reality of the world we live in – so much of it doesn’t look right! But the solution suggested by the British Transport Police is surprisingly similar to the meaning of Easter, ‘See it, say it, sorted.’
1 John 1:5-2:2 Can we know for sure now that we’ve got a place in heaven? Or do we need to wait until we die, and appear at the final judgement? The apostle John tells us we can be sure now. God is light. If we’re walking in the light, we have fellowship with him. But what does it mean to walk in the light?
1 John 1:1-4 Loads of people claim to be Christian. In the UK almost half the population ticked that box in the last census – but are they really all Christians? What is a true Christian? That is what the letter of 1 John tells, so we can be sure whether or not we are the genuine article, or just wearing a fake label.

People say there is an epidemic of anxiety in our society. As Christians we’re not immune to this. How can we find peace?
At some point in your career, you may well find that you are made redundant. What will it be like? How will you respond? What will be some of the challenges? What opportunities will it bring? Maybe this makes you think about juggling career and childcare, or finding your dream job doing something you love which also makes you fabulously wealthy! We shall think together about what the “all” or success that we should aim for in life is, and how we can arrange the different areas of our life that call for our time, resources and energy in light of that.

Acts 8:4–25 The word is more powerful than persecution and paganism, which means the outcast Samaritans can be included, but faith must be apostolic and repentant.

Various We all love stories. But as we get older, we wonder if there is a bigger story of which we are part, which gives meaning to our lives. The Bible reveals this bigger story, in which the main character is Jesus. The mini-stories in the Old Testament are part of this bigger story and point to him, as we see in this talk which focuses on Jacob, Joseph, and Judah.

Christianity is about Christ; the Bible is about Christ; even the Old Testament is about Christ. As we continue to explore Jesus in Genesis, this talk focuses in on the stories of Noah, Abraham, and Isaac.
Various Our bodies are a very sensitive subject – how we feel about them, what we’ve done with them, what others have done to them, how they are changing. Our bodies stir up a whole range of emotions, and it can be bewildering. Where can we find help, clarity, and hope? The Bible has a lot to say about bodies.
Matthew 9:35-38 What do we need if we are to be committed to the work of the gospel, getting the good news out to others and making disciples? The starting point is compassion. And that begins with seeing people as Jesus saw them.

It reorientates our lives around his name, his kingdom, and his will. And it meets our biggest needs – for provision, pardon, and protection.

John 17 If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you pray for today? In this chapter we get to listen in to what Jesus prays the night before his death. What he prays for is what matters most. It’s what should shape our prayers, our priorities, our ambitions.

As Christians our view of sex is regarded by others increasingly not just as outdated and weird, but oppressive and discriminatory. The danger is that we become embarrassed and defensive. But there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. The biblical understanding of sex corresponds to reality as God has made it. It is a better story, and a better vision for human flourishing.

The salvation of God is the greatest reason for joy, he is the king who truly saves his people, and judges evil.
Job 38:39-40:5 ‘The animal kingdom, which God has made and sustains, doesn’t just display beauty and design – it’s also wild, strange, and brutal. God invites us to take a walk on the wild side, joining him on safari, as he teaches Job and us lessons from life in the wild – lessons which will put us in our place’.
Job 38 ‘If you could ask God one question, and you knew he would answer, what would you ask him?’ It’s fine to have questions for God, but we need to watch our attitude. God is not in the dock. If we try to put him there, we need to be ready for his questions back to us.

Marriage is to be a small beautiful picture of the gospel – Christ sacrificially loving his people, his bride submitting to him.
Job 34 ‘If God is good, why does he allow so much suffering in the world? And why did he allow this or that to happen to me?’ Doubts can start to creep in, and we wonder, ‘Maybe he’s not so good after all’. Given such doubts can invade the thinking of even the godliest of people, like Job, we need to listen carefully to what this chapter says about the goodness of God.
Job 31 Some people live to please others; some to please themselves; but the believer lives to please God. But what does such a faith-filled, God-fearing life look like? That is what we find out in this chapter. It points us to Jesus who lived this perfectly, but also challenges us to live as he did.
Job 30 Sometimes in life we can feel trapped – stuck in a difficult present. That’s where Job is in this chapter, mocked by others and feeling rejected by God. The Bible speaks of ‘the steadfastness of Job’. That is a quality we will need too in the Christian life.
How productive would you say you are? How good are you at managing your time? Do you wish you could devote more time to projects outside of your work? God gives us time and we have to decide how we use it. At our Faith in the Workplace session, we are going to see how a biblical perspective on productivity can help us with the very practical day-to-day demands of life.
Job 29 Looking back with nostalgia to happier times in life, as Job does in this chapter, is unhelpful if it just leaves us feeling sad and gloomy. But it’s good if it makes us long for a better future, and if it motivates us to pursue that – deeper friendships; a better marriage; a closer relationship with God.
Money and anxieties often shape our life choices; we all aim to be financially well off or perhaps just to be secure. Jesus warns you and me that we could be financially well off but still be considered a fool by God. He also offers us good reasons why we can have security investing in what is eternal.
How should we live in a world obsessed with sex? What should church look like? The key to answering these questions lies in answering ‘who are you’.
‘Being ambitious at work is a good thing. Managers like ambitious employees because of their enthusiasm and drive’ – so claims one business management article. But how about for a Christian? Can a godly Christian be ambitious at work? What does God think of such ambition?

This passage says otherwise. A true godly believer may go through times of deep darkness. It’s important we recognize this – so we are prepared, should we experience it ourselves; and so we can help others who are suffering.
Pray that God would open your eyes to the hope of his calling, the riches of his inheritance, and the greatness of his power — all of which is ours…

Today we find ourselves in the house of mourning, preparing for a state funeral. As well as a time to give thanks, it is a time to reflect on our own mortality and on what lies beyond.
2 Timothy 4:9-22 The cost of living has been on everyone’s minds in recent months. This passage is about the cost of living as a disciple of Christ, and how to respond to it. The apostle Paul was imprisoned, opposed, deserted – but he responded in a godly way. We are to learn from his example.
2 Timothy 4:1-8 On 9/11 in 2001, within 10 minutes of the first plane hitting the tower, over 1000 phone calls were made from people in the buildings or on the other planes. And they all said the same three words – ‘I love you’. What would your last words be to your loved ones? Here we have the apostle Paul’s final message, which he sums up in another three words: preach the Word.
True repentance means we have peace with God and with one another, and we will be eternally gathered with one another to the throne of God.
King Josiah wept, grieving his sin, he tore his clothes. What does it mean for us to truly be sorry for our sin? And why is it essential for true repentance? We find out by going to Jesus: the sorrowful king.
King Josiah humbled himself before the Lord. But what does that look like? And how are we to do it? His example points us to Jesus, the ultimate humble King.
King Josiah has a tender heart, meaning that he hears and obeys God’s word. If we are to truly repent we need this heart also, yet we so often fail! The good news is that Jesus is a tender hearted king!

2 Timothy 3:1-17 This past week the government declared a national emergency, issuing a severe weather warning. With temperatures hitting 40, life has been a struggle. This Bible passage is the spiritual equivalent – a warning about extreme spiritual heat ahead for the true believer, and instruction about how to cope with it.
2 Timothy 2:14-26 What this country needs more than anything else is good leadership. The health of the nation depends on it. I’m referring of course to good leadership in the churches. That was the big need in Paul’s day, and so it is in ours today. This passage tells us clearly the kind of leaders we need, and the kind to avoid.
2 Timothy 2:1-13 ‘No pain, no gain’. It’s true, whether you’re following an exercise programme or diet, learning to play an instrument, or cultivating a healthy marriage. They all require effort, discipline, and hard work. And what is true in life in general is true spiritually as well. The call to discipleship is a call to present pain for eternal gain.
2 Timothy 1:1-18 ‘Our aim was to show that we were proud, not ashamed’. So said the activist Peter Tatchell about the first Gay Pride march in the UK in 1972. How about us as Christians? Are we proud of belonging to Jesus, or ashamed? Why are we tempted to be ashamed of the gospel? How serious is it if we are? What can we do about it?

This Women’s History Month come and hear Rachael Denhollander, an attorney, author, advocate, and educator who is recognised as a leading voice on the topic of sexual abuse. She became known internationally in 2016 as the first woman to pursue criminal charges and speak publicly against USA Gymnastics’ team doctor Larry Nassar, one of the most prolific sexual abusers in recorded history.
In 2019 She published an autobiographical account of her experience entitled, “What is a Girl Worth?: My Story of Breaking this Silence and Exposing the Truth about Lary Nassar and USA Gymnastics.” For her work as an advocate and educator on sexual assault, Rachael was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and one of Glamour Magazine’s “Women of the Year” in 2018.
She will share her story, as well as how her Christian faith has impacted her fight for truth and justice.

Ezekiel is given a vision of Gods glory leaving the temple, it is a small picture of a greater reality of judgment, the question remains — Will God ever have mercy?
Ezekiel is given a guided tour of the idolatry taking place in God’s temple. We must see that it leads to corrupt living, it deserves judgment, and we must flee.
Ezekiel is called to be a prophet and watchman, we also are to receive and spread the word, telling of the coming judgment.
Ezekiel has a vision of the glory of the Lord. As exiles we need to see that God is the glorious ruler over all, it is a comfort, but there is also a coming judgment.
1 Timothy 2:1-7 One rule for all. That’s what people want. That’s why there was such anger about No.10 lockdown parties. If there are rules then they should apply equally to everyone. One rule for all is what we want – and that’s what we get with God, whoever we are. There is one God, one mediator, and one message for all.

In this passage we get to see what God did for Paul through the gospel, and what he has done, or could do, for each of us.

Churches and Christians grow spiritually healthy through a diet of sound, health-giving teaching – and by steering well away from spiritual junk food.
Numbers 6:24-26 ‘We wish you a happy and prosperous 2022’ say the cards. But such wishes lack any power, and are nothing more than saying that you hope things work out. By contrast the Aaronic blessing is a powerful prayer which asks God for what we need most in the year ahead.
The name Jesus means rescuer – but why do we need rescuing? Because of our spiritual poverty!
The angels show us how Jesus is the most qualified savior and the shepherds have the right attitude: they see for themselves and they rejoice!
