It doesn’t take brain surgery to figure out who she’s related to! Correct! She is the daughter country legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette. She was also show consultant on the heart wrenching bio pic “George and Tammy” .

Georgette is appearing in Glens Falls, New York at the wood theater for an “Up Close and Personal “ Performance on Sunday, October 29 at 3 PM. Tickets are still available at this writing at www.woodtheater.org.

we talk about her parents’ and her music, the making of the bio pic and much more.. She also speaks her mind and minces no words about how country music has become almost unrecognizable……at the conclusion I have included a slightly snarky musical commentary I wrote about “bro country” song lyrics that I penned one day on while on the air…. ENJOY!

Yes..that happened… An unbelievable opportunity to speak with a country music icon…Multi-Award winning singer and actor Randy Travis and his amazing wife Mary who has become, due to his unfortunate stroke several years ago, , his defacto spokesperson..and what an amazing job she does…

They make it work, and with great humor besides.    There is a backstory to getting this chance to chat with them, and it’s briefly explained at the beginning.

To give you an idea….I and several others had the once in a lifetime opportunity to sing his own hits right there with him on the stage!  I will never forget that, and will never forget this super special episode… they were so down to earth that by the end of my working with them, I wanted to invite them for dinner!  Lol

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE MASTERMIND OF THE SHOWS THAT I AND  OTHERS WERE INVOLVED WITH…KEVIN RICHARDS of KEVIN RICHARDS PRODUCTIONS.

He is also on this episode along with coordinator Cheryl Howe who did so much behind the scenes work with these shows at the Charles R Woods Theatre in Glens Falls and the Colonial Theatre in Laconia NH..      Absent here was Mark Petrie who also did amazing work on these gigs!

In this episode I pay tribute to a TOP TALENTed Tribute Artist -Pennsylvania native Doug Delescavage - of the PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM TRIBUTE BAND .  I happened to catch their act here in July 2023 at the Mohawk Harbor, part of the River Casino complex in Schenectady NY.  Don't miss them if they come your way in the future!  Wow!

Here we discuss his impressive training, he talks about his day  job --, I try (and fail miserably) to stump him with  Elton Trivia questions, and  you even get a free mini piano lesson here for all you folks just starting out .

A little sidestep from my normal musical topics--I wanted to explore talent in another medium- PHOTOGRAPHY.  I happened to see this man's work on Facebook where he expertly colorizes old photographs from downtown Troy way back when. A must see!

John Bulmer is my guest.  We talk tips, tricks, artificial intelligence, the death of the digital camera (or maybe not) and other topics .

Check out JohnBulmerPhotography on Facebook to see his incredible work.

At the end of this, I am debuting a song where I dip my toe into the world of A.I. myself.  I had Chat CPT write the lyrics to a song explaining" how much I love playing my piano".

I put music to it and produced it with harmonies etc just for "you know whats and giggles".  It's toward the end of the episode.

Hey--speaking of that--looking for a piano?  Digital? Acoustic? Hybrid?.  I know just the place..... HILTON PIANO CENTER, COLONIE CENTER ALBANY.    Check out his website at www.hiltonpianocenter.com  or Bob@hiltonpianocenter.com .

Mark Pierre has always had at least one foot firmly planted in the country music genre for all the years I've known him (we used to be neighbors!) . Successful Investment adviser by day/ country singer and songwriter by nite!  He has played for countless audiences in our area here in Upstate NY.

Mark has been chosen by show producer Kevin Richards, along with talented singer Jenna Sue and yours truly to perform at the "UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL RANDY TRAVIS SHOW" here at the Charles Woods Theatre in Glens Falls on 9/11/22. We are performing Randy's hits right in front of the man himself, as he is unable to for medical reasons.   You are probably listening to this after the fact, but I wanted to have a talk with him as I have already done with Jenna and Kevin. (those episodes are right below this one) .

We talk Randy, music in general, and a very interesting story how he actually pounded the pavement himself in Nashville and got VERY CLOSE to having one of his songs released.!

Stop what you are doing! Would you like to hear a piano virtuoso? What if I told you he was only going into the 9th grade as of this writing? His name is PAUL BRAULT, and in my endless quest to find and raise awareness of talent young and old either living or coming to Albany, NY's Capital Region, well- I happened to be in the right place at the right time - a piano store! I won't blab on here - details are in this episode. He also has a YouTube channel if you want to hear more.

Thanks to his dad, Bernard for bringing him in! My first impression is that you could tell by meeting him that he (and I'm sure his mom and the rest of the family) are REALLY in Paul's corner musically which is so great to see.

This was a particular thrill for me, having been interviewed on Bob Cudmore's hugely successful nite time radio show back in the early 80's on AM powerhouse, WGY radio in Schenectady, NY. (there's audio to prove it, as you will discover by listening.)  So I figured -what better way to bring full closure, and shake things up in my gastrointestinal tract at the same time than to nervously attempt to interview the master!

Bob is a legendary columnist, author and broadcaster-turned-podcaster.. His interesting show, the HISTORIANS can be found at www.bobcudmore.com or on SOUNDCLOUD.com.

If you are a radio groupie as I am and remember hearing him back then, you will enjoy this talk.  We discuss radio, some of his famous guests, his beginnings, college days and much more .

We continue the conversation and former cast members of the Sean and Richie morning show pop in to reminisce.

The morning show (mullti-award winning, I might add) was on WGNA radio in Albany NY from 1999-2016.

Please refer to part one's show notes for more detail.

View Details

This episode is very very different in SO many ways.  For one, it's become a 2 parter, because once we got going there was no stopping.

For the uninitiated, Sean was my partner for 17 years on radio station WGNA in Albany, NY, between 1999 and 2016.  We were the SEAN AND RICHIE SHOW, and  pretty much a #1 rated morning show for all that time -even winning a national CMA award!

Sean was in the "big chair", and I was cohost, sidekick, or however you want to categorize it.

But we had a big ensemble cast of characters along the way (back in radio's heyday when the business could afford such a thing), so my idea was to interview Sean and have these folks pop in as surprise guests.

If I listed all the things that went wrong here, your eyes would start to bleed from strain, so I will spare you.  But through the magic of editing, I think I got it under control.

Here is part 1 - ENJOY! (which you DEFINITELY will if you were a listener, and I hope my explanations throughout are enough for  if you were not... )

A quote from Apple Music best describes my next podcast guest

"Playing modern country music with an undercurrent of rock and roll energy and a commitment to entertaining the crowd"

His talent and business savvy has really propelled him as a singer songwriter in Nashville. He's written a number one hit for Randy Houser, co-written songs for Hootie and the Blowfish and others, and has several smash hits of his own - including the current hit. "Try Saying Goodbye",received an ASCAP Songwriting Award (no small accomplishment) and his song "Tonite Tonite" was the theme for NBC's Thurs Nite Football!

I had the privilege of meeting him back in the days during my co-hosting duties on the SEAN AND RICHIE SHOW on WGNA radio here in Albany NY . He let me accompany him on piano live on the air, and it's one of my best memories. I was very lucky to snag him for this podcast during the downtime he's experiencing along with the rest of us.

What keeps him busy? What was it like playing in those bars in Nashville waiting to be discovered? Who threw $100 in his tip cup one nite not knowing that it was a big country star who did it? How did he end up being represented by Reba's management company? These and more cool stories on this episode of TOP TALENT.

His website is www.johnkingcountry.com. His music is available on all streaming platforms and through his website . He's also on Facebook and Instagram at John King

“SHIRT MEETS MASK- IT’S A SHMASK!”.  That says it all.  A mask connected  to the shirt so your kids (or you)  don’t forget it or lose it!  BRILLIANT!

I happened to see the ad for this on Facebook and thought it was GENIUS. I contacted owner and mother of 3,  KARINE NISSIM , and we had a great chat about her inspiration (uh..3 kids...what do you  think?..DUH!)  They are also available for adults to order.

If this isn't "Shark Tank"material, I don't know what is, although she seems to be selling them like hot cakes on her own, especially in the NYC area- ever since she was on the Today Show with it.

This was the audio from my first video podcast with a great, talented group of guys from the ELECTRIC CITY CHOROUS in Schenectady, NY.

In this one, we gather up several very talented educators to discuss changes to the teaching profession and survival strategies in the era of Covid-19.

We have two teachers from Albany's Capital Region - Jamie Pink and Tracy Trainor, a local guidance counselor, Lexie Phillips, and educator from Brooklyn, NY, and my niece, Jessica Lorenz.

There is also a little warning for all teachers put to music at the top of the episode  from yours truly...

Some of the discussions:   Recess- Will that go away?  How about the lunchroom?  Assembly programs?  Teaching styles - how will it change when you are instructing kids on Zoom vs face to face?  This and much more..

Also , if you go to my Facebook page @richiephillips - I have some clips of songs written by Jamie and Tracy's students in Jefferson Elementary and Menands School,   The third clip is from Lexie Phillips' school -Carroll Hill in Troy during my "Reading, Writing and Rhyming" songwriting program - something I did for over 20 years during my "stint" as a morning radio cohost.

Enjoy!

For those who are still hesitant, what is it like to get your haircut in the age of Covid?  I found out.  I actually did this interview during an actual haircut with Albany veteran stylist "Chaz" from UPPER CUT.  You'll hear some buzzing and clipping sounds.  It's all real. Both live in Buckinghamshire, England. Don Dworkin is a working musician from the Albany, NY area originally, and now living in Madrid, Spain. All 3 are longtime friends.

Dana Haberling's name was given to me by my niece, Kiti Phillips. Dana is studying for her degree in epidemiology in Atlanta, but studied abroad for a year in Finland.

All of them give a different "take" and amazing insights into the Covid pandemic from their experiences from where they reside, and guarantee this will be a fascinating podcast to take a listen to.

The podcast ends with a bit of levity - a love song I wrote for Social Distancing.

There's actually a "video wall" video to go with this featuring talent from the Albany, NY area, including local tv personalities and Albany's Mayor!

Another great discussion under less-than-happy circumstances.

We talk to Carmen Lookshire, Jeff Brisbin, and Joe Kulewicz of Skeeter Creek about how these popular Albany Area, Capital Region musicians are dealing with being unable to pursue their live performances.

But we do talk in the positive as well and describe how they are coming up with clever alternatives in spite of the coronavirus.

This lady is EXACTLY what this podcast was created for.. to expose people to Top Talent..and SANGAH NOONA is IT!  Originally from South Korea, and now living in the Washington D.C. area, Sangah shows us how she has mastered the’88’s on YouTube and Facebook each week as well as in hotels in D.C. , and has a massive fan base to show for it.  (and she can now add ine more to that!)

I stumbled upon her one night accidentally  by Googling “BEATLES PIANO”.  Her interpretations absolutely mesmerized me personally, and she plays EVERY genre imaginable.... Although I focus more on Albany NY area talent, I just HAD to make an exception.  Search her name on YouTube and sit back and you’ll see what I mean...And if you check it out on Sundays, you’ll see her LIVE taking requests! But before you do all that, please take a listen and share if you care!  ( I even wrote her a theme song because “NOONA” rhymes with where I live.. NISKAYUNA!). I couldn’t resist as I am now a HUGE fan, and you will be too!

Write this name down, cuz you're going to see a lot of her in the very near future. That's my prediction (and hope) for Carmen Lookshire - a very, very talented Capital Region singer/songwritert and actress as well!

She was recently seen as Toby Ragg in “Sweeney Todd” with Two of Us Productions and as Nina Rosario in Schenectady Light Opera Company’s production of “In the Heights”. Carmen has also performed at various venues with guitarist Joe Carrick in New York, including

  • Club Helsinki - Hudson
  • Eden Café-Loudonville
  • Wellington’s-Albany
  • Cuckoo’s Nest - Albany
  • Athos Restaurant
  • Sperry’s -Saratoga
  • The Duplex-NYC

We discuss the music biz in general, her new album "FOR LOVE", her experience recording in the studio, and some really great advice to singers just starting out in the clubs (especially those in which the patrons don't seem to be paying attention -which is most of them!) Her website is www.carmenlookshire.com.

Mine, by the way, if you are looking for some rollicking piano entertainment for your next event (and I can even write you a personalized song as I did for Carmen..), is

Multi-talented newscaster, actor, singer, and all around pro - the Capital Region's Benita Zahn- is my guest on this episode.  We explore her background, how she balances her work with personal life, and examine the multitude of prestigious awards she has garnered over the years (despite her reluctance to pat herself on the back...) We talk theatre, health, her husband and much more!  She also has a podcast called EVERYTHING THEATRE - available on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get yours!  It airs every other Tuesday (kinda like mine!)

I also composed a little personalized theme song right at the top to salute her -which reminds me... I did it for her, and I can do one for YOU!

If you have a person you would like to pay tribute to, I can write a song for you that I will record and email for your approval.   You can then forward it to whomever!  Surprise them at work, at home, or play it at their birthday, retirement party, employee recognition nite or the like.  I'm calling them "RichieRhymes", and if you email me at Richie1077@gmail.com I can give you different options.   Go to https://hirerichie.com/richie-rhymes and you can see examples!

You don't necessarily have to live in the Capital Region to appreciate Al Bruno, but if you do, I'm sure you've either have heard him, seen him, or hired him -but always enjoyed him.  He is one of the musical "Road Warriors" who is out there singing his heart out in clubs and at private events in the Albany area AND BEYOND.  He is even in the process of recording a song in Nashville- produced and written by singer-songwriter and Montgomery Gentry band leader Eddie Kilgallon.

Al mentions Eddie in this interview along with someone else who he feels was influential in his career, former Albany area DJ Ric Mitchell. Talented singer-songwriter Mirinda James also gets her own props from Al.

I hope you enjoy this interview.  Please subscribe to this podcast!  I would appreciate it greatly!

This is a little bit of extra content.. a ditty I wrote about the ridiculous law enacted in New York that would prohibit courts in NY from requiring bail money.

This podcast is truly a labor of love. It has personal meeting to me because every year since 1988 I have written a year end wrap-up song – and always a parody of the same tune- “WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME”.  No one’s really asked me to do it – and I’m not sure anyone cares if I do or not to be honest – but it’s just something that I thought would almost end up being a musical diary of what’s happened in the world For the past 3 plus decades.   Hopefully my grandson Aaron listen to it someday and will discover what a disturbed Grandpa he had!  In the podcast you’ll hear the very first one that I did in In the podcast you’ll hear the very first one that I did in and my latest.  ENJOY!  Happy 2020!

This was an honor and a privilege to be able to highlight student talent in Albany's Capital Region, specifically Mohonasen High School in Rotterdam.  Dylan Smith and Laura Rickard are both talented musicians who have taken it upon themselves to write and record an original composition entitled  "Seconds" (Disclaimer here- this is a demo of their final production- I forgot to mention this in the interview- it's a work in progress.  Laura and Dylan are members of a band at the school who's members are going to add tracks to this, and I will post the final work when I get it)

Special thanks to their music teacher, Gail Sparlin, for her leadership and source of inspiration to these students.

There are so many schools who have "nixed" their music programs altogether.  It's so great to see at least one school here that seems to put a unique emphasis on music education.

ROCK ON!!!  Please feel free to spread this podcast around to let everyone hear the song!!!

It took awhile to make this happen, with many bumps along the way technically (apologies for the sketchy audio here -and you should have heard it BEFORE I fixed it!), but here it is- my EXCLUSIVE interview with the Capital Region's very own-- WEATHERMAN G!

It began as a hobby and he has fast become a local and regional phenomenon with thousands of facebook followers -eagerly waiting for his next round of colored charts and important prognostications! And he's incredibly accurate as we all know, though we know so little about him -  UNTIL NOW!!

You'll be entertained and you'll learn about the finer points of weather forecasting.  (He also has some pretty specific info about what mother nature has in store for us this year - you won't want to miss that!)

PLUS - I have written him a theme song, cuz I thought he needed it. That's included as well...

ENJOY!

We go very local this time – if you live in the Capital Region of New York State, you’ll know of this town.  It has exploded in growth over the years, so I thought I would TAKE IT TO THE TOP and find out how it all happened and who was at least partly responsible.. Some say they deserve credit, others say they should be blamed for transforming a quiet little town into a shopping mecca.

Former county supervisor ROY MCDONALD is my guest.

The song that I wrote for Wilton’s 200th anniversary is at the end of the podcast if you’d like to scroll ahead.  To be specific it starts approximately  at the 33 min 40 second mark.

Hey -we all procrastinate in one way or another, don't we?  Apologies in advance! This one is a tad late, I will admit.

As I will explain in the podcast, every single year since 1988 I have written a song rhyming the top issues of the year. I did it in conjunction with my function (which rhymes) as a singing morning show cohost on WGNA in Albany, NY.

Well, had an inquiry on Facebook from long time listener and friend Michele Miller asking me where this year's song could be found....Uye Vey - the guilt, the guilt!   So I locked myself in my home studio and came up with this, my 30th end of year song (parodying the same tune each year: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" )

I also include the very first one I wrote in 1988, which is fun to just relive the issues of the day!

Please enjoy this podcast.  There is also a video version of this on my YouTube channel- search  "Richie Phillips".

Thanks, and let's hope for a better, brighter, and safer 2019.

He's published 45 books - (not a typo) on top musical talent- mostly in the rock and hip hop genres, but this time music biographer Jake Brown turns his attention to what he feels is an underappreciated group - the songwriters behind COUNTRY music's biggest hits.

Are you planning a big ANNUAL MEETING?,  WEDDING? Oh, and hey New Yorkers,  Would you rather live upstate, or downstate? And where exactly is the dividing line?  I wrote a song about that very controversy and hope to put it to rest in this episode. (Very tongue-in-cheek - just having fun here)

Take a tip and listen to this episode!  This one discusses the very controversial move by NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo to end the "tip credit" - the ability for restaurants to pay less of a "minimum wage" than others  to servers being that they accept tips.

We open with a RHYME-A-TORIAL from yours truly, and then we will speak to noted Albany restauranteur Dominic Purnomo - co-owner of the iconic YONO's Indonesian restaurant in downtown Albany, NY (info at www.yonos.com)

He will give his thorough take on the subject, and you will come away really understanding both sides of the dilemma...

P.S.  If you enjoyed the musical part, this is the kind of thing I can do for YOUR next event - perform some stand-up keyboard comedy, DJ for dance music if needed,  and can  include a custom-written song about someone in your organization (retiree, employees of the year, etc)

Time to celebrate LOCAL musicians - the folks who go out and beat the bushes day after day (correction: nite after nite)- playing and singing their hearts out - carrying the torch for the musical genre they love.  In this case, we are talking about country music.

This gentleman is an old friend, and I totally respect his dedication to country music -especially the classic variety.   In an odd way, I'm not sure I would have ever gotten involved with country radio had it not been for him.  Take a listen and we will explain!

We talk music, songwriting, family, his new gig as frontman for the locally iconic BACK 40 BAND, and much, much more.

Although I actually should have interviewed his fantastic wife Lisa to find out how she put up with him all these many moons, I will wait on that as I now bring you my discussion with local singer, songwriter and finacial guru-  MARK PIERRE.

This one was a special thrill. I DEFINITELY took it to THE TOP of the country music business with this guy!

He came on our morning radio show in Albany NY years ago (he looks alot younger, and I had hair). A few years after that, we had a country music festival in Saratoga, NY, and he invited me to go onstage and accompany him while HE sang! How surreal was THAT?

I never forgot how friendly and generous he was of his time. But it didn't end there. He gave me 45 MORE minutes in between his busy schedule for this podcast.

If you know his songs, you'll love this. If you are a musician, he digs a little deeper into his process of writing, his musical influences, and keyboard technique as well.

His newest smash hit is "Fall Crazy" and you can hear it here

He also has a new TV series coming out on Fox TV - Songs from the Cellar. Watch for it!

This podcast's purpose is to reinforce the point that when an artist is branded as LOCAL, it shouldn't equate with the term "AMATEURISH". This very talented rock band and brilliant solo artist from the Albany NY area I present as exhibit A and B.-

WILD ADRIATIC AND GIRL BLUE

As of this writing they are two of the acts on stage for the upcoming CAPITAL RECORDS SALUTES THE BEATLES nite on March 23rd at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady.

I talk to them both about the influence the Beatles' music has had on their lives (plus they both get a pop quiz to see how well they know the Fab 4!).. oh, and also I explain MUSICALLY what the Beatles meant to me, for better or worse.

You've always heard your mother say it's important to make a good impression. I guess this guy listened very well, because he's incredible at it! I'm talking about comic impressionist Steve Van Zandt from the Albany, NY area (no, NOT the guy from the Sopranos, although spelled the same way. I bet he could nail that impression as well!)

I had a blast talking and reminiscing with Steve. Whether you are from the area or not, you will love this episode. We have a few local references, but nothing that will throw you off!

Steve's website, btw is www.stevevanzandt.com. He's got a phenomenal new business idea brewing that we all should keep tabs on. It's a KILLER concept. He mentions it toward the end of the podcast.

Other things we cover include:

His method of learning a voice

The impression he never gets tired of doing,

What it would be like if Jimmy Stewart was a track announcer at Saratoga (whoops - local reference-- you see, that's a place in our area that has horses and people bet on them to see how fast they can run in a circle)

… PLUS if you act NOW, you'll get a hysterical sampling of other dead on voice characterizations ( and that includes POTUS, OF COURSE!)

I hope you enjoy this, and if so, please share so we can grow this little show together. By all means, SUBSCRIBE as well so you will get a heads up when new episodes publish.

My website, by the way if you are interested in entertainment for your next function (DJing, live keyboards for cocktail hour, a stand-up song parody routine, customized song for somerone in the audience.... your choice) is www.hirerichie.com .

Note: I have decided to get this to a point where I'm doing it every OTHER week. Being that I am a staff of one, It will give me a chance to get more guests, promote the episodes more, have more time to write a topical song of the week, and basically give you a break from me bugging you constantly to tune in! Hope that works for you!

See you next time as I keep trying and never stop until I ........TAKE IT TO THE TOP!

A fun, freeform discussion with Albany area singer-songwriter turned comedienne Erin Harkes.  We talk about the journey one takes to be a working musician, and her gutsy transition into stand-up comedy (not many can do both, but she handles it real well!).  There's some hysterical stories along the way here.

Also, Richie gives RHYMING advice to POTUS on his upcoming meeting with nemesis Robert Mueller.  All on this edition of THE TOP.

Richie is always available to provide music and entertainment for your next conference, meeting, or other business function.  He can do perform his unique brand of keyboard comedy, along with music for dancing and more!  He can even write you a personalized song parody for that special someone (and if he can't be there in person, he can pre-record it and email it!)

Go on your favorite music site and take one listen to this incredible child prodigy keyboardist, Joey Alexander.  Your mouth will drop.  I had the unique opportunity to speak with him to promote his concert here in Troy NY on Jan 27th, 2018.  We delve into his background, his approach to learning a song, and I also will attempt here to see if I can learn even 2 seconds of a Joey Alexander piece.  (Spoiler alert - not good!)

After the interview, I will have a musical response to the scammer who keeps calling me, sending me text messages, and pretending to be overseas with no money -begging me to send some via Western Union (Spoiler alert #2 - FAT CHANCE).

This podcast is brought to you by yours truly.  If you would like to see a list of musical and comedy services I can provide for your next wedding, private party, or business function, go to www.hirerichie.com

He WON Season 8 of NBC's "THE VOICE".  Is there life AFTER a career highlight like that at such an early age?  Plus a quick game of "Would You Rather", and much more.  I also will, as a continuing public service, rhyme the news of the past week.  Programming note: Although THE TOP originates from the Albany, NY area and thus local references,  I also include national stories as well.  ENJOY!

You don’t have to be from Schenectady, New York to be familiar with  the iconic Perecca’s Bakery and More Perecca’s Restaurant.  Their bread alone is legendary. What famous celebrities still order it? Just how old is that pizza oven?  Little pieces of trivia and exciting news will be shared by owner Maria Papa.  Plus I’ll have a rhyming eulogy for my defunct snowblower.  (And no, this is not meant to be an infomercial)

Join veteran Albany radio personality/ song satirist "Rhymin' Richie" Phillips as he hosts his very first podcast.  And his first guest?  He "takes it to THE TOP" and scores a fun interview with Moriah Formica from NBC's THE VOICE.

She takes us all behind the curtain and explains the arduous process of getting a spot on this blockbuster show.  It's an amazing story, especially for someone 17 years old!
