Paul Warne's Rams were booed off in their opening Pride Park fixtures before a morale-boosting, much-needed victory over Fleetwood Town at the weekend. Chris, Tom and Cutch assess the defensive calamities against Oxford United and Blackpool, before breathing a big sigh of relief as Martyn Waghorn's second goal in as many games made it two wins from four in League One. We also assess exactly what's needed to make a defensive three at the back successful - and what Derby need to do to improve. There's chat too on the possibly-departing Eiran Cashin, his value, and whether we'd be able to replace him, and a collective facepalm at Derby's early injury crisis, with Max Bird, Joe Ward and Kane Wilson all sidelined for at least two months. Chris and Blake are joined by Chris Smith as Derby's 23/24 season opener ends with disappointment in a home defeat to Wigan Athletic. The SBW panel discuss the errors which undermined the Rams' intense pressing, why the defeat 'wasn't catastrophic', and positives on show from debutants.
There's also discussion on the likely arrival of more firepower - which one of Jordan Rhodes, Martyn Waghorn or Michael Smith would add the most to the current Derby line-up... and which one is most likely to sign? We also lament the possible exit of Max Bird - can the Rams justify selling one of their prized academy assets and mainstays in the midfield?
We also talk about the heartwarming Korean Lee, the Rams-obsessed South Korean student who had the time of his life in the East Midlands this weekend on his first ever trip to the UK. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
With the 2023/24 season upon us, Richard Cutcher chaired a podcast panel with four other opposition fans from around the division, to gauge the mood as the Rams' rivals rate their own promotion chances, as well as who they're tipping for top goalscorer, which manager is under the most pressure... and who'll finish in the top two.
We were joined by James Jarvis from the 'Lion of Vienna' Bolton Wanderers podcast (@LOVBWFC), Tracey Martin from Barnsley's 'Red All Over' (@RedAllOverBFC), Ben Thomas from 'The Tilehurst End' Reading FC pod (@TheTilehurstEnd), and broadcaster Jake Smith (@JakePompeySmith), from Portsmouth's Express FM, for the Pompey perspective. Chris, Tom, Cutch and Anton return to preview Derby's 2023/24 campaign and review Paul Warne's summer business so far. Drawing on the opinions of our new recruits' former fanbases, the SBW panel talk through each of the clubs additions and share their expectations for the season ahead. Are the Rams deserved bookies' favourites to win League One, or will it be another classic Derby County false dawn? With the division looking particularly open in 2023/24, there's analysis on Derby's promotion rivals... and some sad goodbyes to a couple of fan favourites who departed over the summer. Plus, as David Clowes floats the idea of a Rams museum we ask... what items should go in there? (Wrong answers only)
With the dust settling and the wounds healing on Derby's ultimately disappointing League One campaign, Cutch, Tom and Blake look back on the season that was and put forward nominees for the following categories:- The 'Foot like a traction engine' Best Screamer Award- Biggest Underachiever- Best Away Day Limbs/Scenes- Biggest Unsung Hero- The 'Most League One Thing To Happen To Derby' Award- The Stuart Attwell Award For Worst Officiating Ineptitude
It wasn't to be. After a memorable campaign which featuted 21 wins and 67 goals, Derby County fall just short in their League One promotion quest as the Rams drop to 7th on the last day of the season. A disappointed Chris and Blake are joined by Hilary Leam (Chair of RamsTrust) in assessing what went wrong at Hillsborough, and how the final day defeat was symbolic of the whole season. The SBW panel also discuss the future of the club, which Rams we'd be most disappointed to leave in the summer, and our overall favourite memories from 2022/23.
Cutch, Tom and Anton review back-to-back wins and a five game unbeaten 'mini run' that has put the Rams back into sixth spot and in control of their play off destiny. They also assess David McGoldrick's latest scoring streak, how Paul Warne's new 3-4-3 has got Derby playing and the various permutations in the League One promotion race.GET MORE PODCASTS BY SUPPORTING SBW ON PATREON:www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing
Chris, Cutch and Blake review a mixed Easter weekend for Derby which delivered three points on the road in the green, sunny Cotswolds, followed by an ultimately disappointing draw at home to MK Dons. The boys assess the run-in of the Rams' play-off rivals, whether we can salvage something from this season, before looking ahead to further summer rebuilding.GET BONUS SBW PODS ON OUR PATREON!www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing
After falling to back to back league defeats for the first time since September, Chris is joined by Cutch, Anton and Tom to try and explain what's going wrong for the Rams with play-off prospects hanging in the balance.Chris and Cutch report back from an away day at London Road, while the boys ask whether the midfield is too one-paced and if a lack of squad depth is ultimately to blame for the loss of form.
In this Patreon taster episode, Chris and Richard visited Moor Farm for an exclusive chat with Derby's flying winger, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. We asked NML about life under Paul Warne, his playoff dream for the end of the season, and how he's adapted tactically while playing under the Rams' new boss. There's also revealing insight from Nat on his football journey - from growing up playing football in 'cages' in Birmingham, to the 'personal hurdles' he's overcome through his career. To hear the full 30 minute interview - and also get access to our archive of 20 bonus Patreon podcasts - you can help support the pod by signing up as a Patron, for the price of a coffee each month:www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing
As the Rams return to winning ways with a chaotic 3-2 victory at Oxford United, Chris, Richard and Blake hail the Rams' battling qualities and the impact of Louie Sibley in maintaining the top six push, having wobbled at Plymouth due to that decisive penalty. There's discussion on David McGoldrick - what's Derby's next move with League One's second top goalscorer, who's contract expires in the summer? We also look forward to the remaining 10 league fixtures... how many more wins will be needed to guarantee that precious playoff spot?GET BONUS PODS, FREE MERCH AND RAMS PRIZES ON OUR PATREON!www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing
A second damaging away defeat to a playoff rival leaves Chris, Richard, Blake and Tom contemplating Derby's promotion credentials, as a shambolic afternoon in South Yorkshire sees the Rams beaten 4-1 by Barnsley. The SBW panel assess what exactly went wrong at Oakwell, whether changes will be made for Derby's next fixtures, and how much the bruising loss has affected our playoff hopes. There's also discussion on the Rams' new Head of Recruitment, Mark Thomas, as we analyse the best players he recruited in his previous role at Oxford and ask how his appointment fits into David Clowes' long term strategy for Derby County.
Don't be sad it's over, just be glad it happened. Derby's unbeaten league run stretching back to October finally ends, as the Rams are edged out in a five-goal thriller by Wycombe Wanderers. Richard and Blake are joined by the Derby Telegraph's Leigh Curtis to assess how Warne's side were seemingly outfought by a managerial 'masterclass' in Buckinghamshire, as automatic promotion hopes are dealt a blow. The SBW panel also discuss why the Rams seemingly score so few from set pieces, and ask if we'll ever see Krsytian Bielik ever wear the black and white again, following his goalscoring exploits for loan club Birmingham City this weekend.SUPPORT SBW ON PATREON!Get a host of extra benefits, as well as a bonus podcast each month, by signing up as an SBW Patron.www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashing
In our 150th episode, Chris chats to Spanish Rams fan Fernando Batallon, who had his first ever trip to Pride Park for the thrashing of Morecambe, having decided to support Derby in 2019 after playing as them in FIFA Career Mode.Fernando, who travelled to England for the first time with his six cousins from Lugo, northern Spain, explains why they chose Derby in the first place, what they made of Pride Park... and when they're planning their next trip to the East Midlands.
Derby's hopes of going 20 unbeaten in all comps (not including penalties...) are dealt a Hammer blow as West Ham ease to a 2-0 victory at Pride Park. Chris and Richard are joined by pod newcomer Blake Fallows to assess the FA Cup defeat and Warne's apparent prioritisation of league over cup.We also relive the spectacular away win at Port Vale, analyse Derby's new deadline day arrival Harvey White, and reflect on the Jan 2022 march to Pride Park, a year on.GET BONUS SBW PODCAST! In a year unlikely to ever be repeated for the Rams, there were plenty of highs and desperate lows, as the club's very existence came into question before eventual salvation. Chris, Tom and Richard look back on the last 12 months and pick out our favourite on-field moments, before assessing Paul Warne's three months in charge so far, and lamenting the departure of the players we miss most. There's also a round-up of the most significant moments from Derby's year, as told by us on the podcast, and a look forward to 2023 - with some bold predictions - as the Rams rebuild continues. Two very contrasting draws see Derby's unbeaten run extend into double figures... but the Rams are still outside that magical top six after dropping points at Burton Albion. Chris and Richard are joined by Ollie Wright to look back on the two most recent results. We also assess the criticism which Conor Hourihane has found himself under from some quarters - as well as Lewis Dobbin following his big miss at Burton - and ask how Paul Warne may re-shape his squad in January... or if he even can.GET MORE PODCASTS ON THE SBW PATREON!- Access exclusive interviews and bonus episodes, competitions, behind-the-scenes content, and a welcome pack just for signing up....www.patreon.com/stevebloomerswashingLEAVE US A REVIEW!- Enjoy the pod? Chris, Richard and Tom return as Derby navigate a tricky tie at serial upset specialists Newport County to book their place in the FA Cup Third Round Proper. A match-winning contribution from Louie Sibley has us wondering, once again, where he fits into Warne's Derby side, while an eighth game unbeaten (in 90 minutes) fuels winter optimism.
Who has been Derby's player of the season so far? We make cases for the three main contenders, talk spectacular volleys and Welsh away days from yore in the latest episode.
The Rams make it six unbeaten in all competitions with a 3-1 victory away at MK Dons and Richard and Anton are joined by Chris Smith, also known as @cspaceram, to dissect a busy week of Derby County action.
Did Jake Rooney step up on his league debut to give Paul Warne another reliable centre-back option and can Derby take inspiration from their Anfield performance into tough league games on the horizon?
An incredible first half sees Paul Warne earn his first Pride Park win, as David McGoldrick's hattrick inspires the Rams to a 4-2 victory over in-form Bristol Rovers. With disappointing results against Ipswich and Exeter, the convincing three points will quieten early critics of the new manager's style and help keep Derby on the tails of the early season pace-setters.
Richard, Anton and Tom break down Didzy's historic treble (the first of his career), and also assess whether the victory means Derby should stick with 4-4-2 rather than Warne's preferred 3-5-2 shape.
A frankly ludicrous three minute spell in Accrington sees Derby survive two penalties before new goalscoring hero Will Osula made the hosts pay at the other end seconds later in the Rams' 3-0 triumph - Paul Warne's second consecutive away win as new boss.
Chris, Richard and Anton try to wrap their heads around that astonishing period of play in the first half, hail Prince William and his debut brace, and discuss Derby's striking options with no less than four forwards all gunning for a starting place.
There's analysis too on Derby's style of play under their new management team, and a look at the formative League One table, where the well-placed Rams sit 9th, with games in hand on those around them.

After an annoyingly long wait, Derby finally have an away goal(s), and an assured 2-0 win over Cambridge to go with it. Chris, Richard, and Tom herald the arrival of 'Warne Ball' by assessing how the Rams got to grips with the new gaffer's style impressively early, James Collins' match-winning brace, and a composed clean sheet for Derby's new-look back three.
There's also analysis of Warne's team shape, the new manager's leadership style and personality... and the welcome return of 'Win, Lose or Schnoor'.
Here we go again...! Just 12 games into the season, and the Rams are welcoming their 11th new manager in nine years, as Paul Warne leaves Rotherham United to take over at Pride Park. Chris and Richard are joined by Ollie Wright (Derby County Blog) to assess the credentials of the new gaffer, and discuss what's next for the demoted Liam Rosenior.
How will Derby cope with the contrast in playing styles going from possession, passing football to Warne's more direct approach? How much do we really know about the Rams' new boss? And when on earth will we score a goal away from home? There's plenty to discuss in SBW 139.

Goals goals goals! After firing blanks in their last two outings, the Rams smash six past West Brom, Peterborough and Grimsby to progress on all fronts in the league and cups. Sibley starred in two of those results, while Mendez-Laing continues to impress with more goals and assists. Dare Derby fans dream of a trip to Wembley or two at the end of the season?

With Kirchner being very public on his plans for the Rams, Chris, Richard and Jimmy analyse our prospective new owner's social media Q&A, in which he addressed funding, personnel, points deductions and recruitment for Derby County.
There's also analysis of yet another disappointing away day, with Chris recounting his trip to Swansea, as the Rams are beaten for the 8th consecutive league game on the road. The games are running out for Derby County in their improbably quest to avoid relegation, and disheartening defeats against Millwall and Luton havn't helped the Rams' survival cause.
Chris, RIchard and Tom are joined by pod newbie Jimmy McLoughlin to assess Derby's last three performances, with one fundamental question in mind - will we stay up? We've also got 'Your Shout' on whether listeners think Derby will pull off the miracle. (Spoiler: 'No')
Alongside the analysis of Luton, Millwall and Peterborough, there's discussion on Derby's latest defensive starlet, Eiran Cashin. Have we been pleasantly surprised by his emergence into the first team and his apparently composure in slotting into the back line?
Inevitably, there's some more takeover chat - with a make-or-break week approaching, could some positives preferred bidder news kickstart Derby's survival bid... or, conversely, will securing our long term future hamper the Rams' 'siege mentality' in Mission Impossible?

As a Radio Derby broadcaster for nearly 30 years and Derby County employee from 2013 until last year, few have been closer to the club than Colin Gibson. A man whose voice is synonymous with the Rams, Colin kindly gave us his time to reflect on his eight years at the club, how it felt losing job at Pride Park due to Derby's administration in September, and his candid opinions on working behind the scenes and with Mel Morris.
Colin also told Chris about the Rams manager he had the best rapport with, the ones who were trickier in post-match interviews, his dismay at the club's current financial plight, and plenty more. An open and frank conversation with a man who bleeds black and white.
In another emotionally draining week which leaves Derby County again staring into the abyss, Wayne Rooney's players responded the only way they know how - with buckets of commitment, energy and defiance. Richard, Tom and Anton react to the superb 2-0 win over Sheffield United, featuring two of the best goals ever seen at Pride Park.
There is, of course, also analysis of the latest off-field body blows which see the Rams' administration and EFL interference threatening the club's very existence. Is it now Mike Ashley to the rescue for our 'crisis club'? How many of Derby's young stars will be sacrificed in upcoming 'fire sale'. and who would we be most upset to see leave?

As the post-points deduction era begins for Derby, Chris, Tom and Anton look back on a positive four points picked up from home games against Reading and Swansea which saw the Rams climb out of a negative points total.
With both Kelle Roos and Ryan Allsop showing encouraging form between the sticks, who should keep the No.1 shirt for the Rams? Have Derby been slightly fortunate to go unbeaten (so far) at home this season?
We're also joined by Paul Harris, Managing Director of Derby Brewing Company, to talk to us about their initiative of creating a Derby County beer to raise funds for the club - and how fans can get involved.

In a podcast we never thought we'd record, Chris, Richard and Tom react to the devastating news that Derby County are entering administration and will plummet to the bottom of the Championship following a 12 point deduction. How terminal will the situation become for our proud club, an institution of English football, and where do we go from here?
Then there's Mel Morris, the self-proclaimed 'lifelong fan' behind Derby's catastrophic demise. How did a local businessman worth hundreds of millions allow this to happen... and why were his own staff among the last to find out? We assess the Rams legacy of the man who gambled on Derby's future, and lost spectacularly.
We're also joined by Ollie Wright, from the Derby County Blog, for his take on a brutal week at Pride Park, his thoughts on Mel Morris, a (rare) victory over Stoke City... and ofcourse his new book, 'Tens and Nervous: Derby County in the 2010s (Volume 1)'.

Chris, Richard and Anton discuss Derby's latest defensive masterclass from Davies and Jagielka, dish out well-deserved praise for Kelle Roos... and try to decide once again: Should we continue playing out from the back?

As an encouraging Derby County display is ruined by a calamitous injury time collapse at Peterborough to throw away three points, Richard, Anton and Tom stew over another galling away defeat under Wayne Rooney.
How will the Rams now cope without the injured Colin Kazim-RIchards? Was the defeat at London Road merely a sign of things to come? And which of the quickly-blooded Derby youngsters can we look to to step up in the Rams' threadbare, struggling squad?
What will the 2021/22 season bring for Derby County? With significant concerns both on and off the pitch, Chris, Richard, Tom and Anton reconvene to analyse the Rams' chances in what could be the most testing campaign in a generation.
There's discussion on Derby's paper-thin playing squad, the triallists who could come in, Tom Lawrence as captain, Ravel Morrison.. and ofcourse Wayne Rooney's off-field shenanigans.

What a season, eh? After an infuriating, relentless but ultimately relief-filled campaign, Chris, Anton, Tom and Richard look back on Derby County's woeful 20/21 struggles in the hope we never have to endure a season like this again. Was this year as bad as 07/08... if not worse? Who did we select for our Player of the Year and Goal of the Season? We also discuss what went wrong for Phillip Cocu (and Wayne Rooney), and brace ourselves for next year as we wonder what sort of points deduction the Rams can get away with... if they're still a Championship club.

Signed by Jim Smith in December 1999, Branko Strupar was a European top goalscorer who arrived in England as 'The Belgian Beckham' due to his freekick prowess, with Rams fans hoping he'd rejuvenate a side struggling to score. However, despite a formidable goals-per-minutes record when he was fit, Strupar's time at Derby was ravaged by injury and he remains a 'What if?' player in the eyes of fans to this day. Chris and Richard spoke to Branko, who told us candidly about the mistakes he made in rushing himself back from injury, his sadness at not playing more games, and his hopes to one day return to England. * CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE *

Bleak. Abject. Excruciating. Just three of the more polite words we can use to describe Derby County's start to the 2020/21 campaign, as yet another defeat (that's seven in 11 games) leaves the Rams propping up the Championship.
