In this episode, we will dive into the difficult world of cross-cultural ministry and conflict. This is an introduction to how to employ the application in our context. We will talk about how, as Western missionaries, we must take the extra step of cultural application into our lives in a diverse world.

What happens when we doubt God? Maybe we doubt His power or His goodness. Maybe our lives are lived sinfully in doubt of a God who is worthy of all our worship. What is the weight of righteousness? The weight of righteousness is obedience. God calls Joseph and Mary to endure public shame of Mary having a child before they were married. However, Joseph and Mary know what others don't know. This pregnancy is of divine and miraculous origin. This is a work of God that will forever change the landscape of the world. We see Joseph and Mary are obedient to what God had called him to do. We was to be faithful. The name Jesus means God saves. The name Immanuel is God with us. We see that Jesus is our savior that is God with us, God among us.

In this concluding chapter we see a borderline suicidal Jonah. Why is he so grumpy? Because God is merciful to the people Jonah doesn't like. We see a twisted heart. And the Bible provides a mirror into our very souls. How do we act when God doesn't do what we think He should do? How do we handle the difficult nature of following Jesus. Jonah ends with a challenge. Will we love people with God's heart or Jonah's?

Chapter three, is a bittersweet chapter. On one hand we see a somewhat repentant Jonah and a completely repentant people and an even more gracious God. The people of Nineveh repent! Jonah is reluctantly obedient, and we see God display great grace on the repentant people of Nineveh. But don't miss the grace that Jonah receives throughout the book, as God continues to deal with Jonah and use him. How will we handle God calling us to talk to people we don't like or to go places we don't want to go. The book of Jonah asks these questions.

The the depths of despair and stress in life seeks to crush us where does our hope come from? Jonah finds himself in a bad spot. He is sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Death is sure to follow. In the midst of the depth and from the depths of despair, our wayward prophet cries out to a holy God. And God answers. We see, God's mercy and grace on full display in this chapter. Surely He is a good God, even when we are not a good people.

Jonah is the story of a wayward prophet. It can be odd at times. I mean there is the whole Jonah getting eaten by a fish thing. Then there is the thing about the plant. Not to mention the book ends on a rather sour note that leaves us wondering what is the message. As we dig into this book, and specifically chapter one, we see that this book is odd, but relevant. Challenging but encouraging. Let us begin this book together.

Obadiah is the definition of a minor prophet. At only one chapter this is a very short prophecy and it is to not to the people of Israel or Judah, but instead to a lesser known nation of Edom. Yet what God has to say to Edom He says to us today. His promise to Judah is our promise today.

How do we see God's justice and mercy balanced throughout the book of Amos? We see that balance when we come to chapters like chapter 7 where God is pronouncing judgment and yet mercy in the judgment. God has the right utterly destroy us and yet has grace through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. God made a way where there was no way. Follow Him today.

What does spiritual ease look like? It looks like not worrying about sin or repentance. It means we seek security in things other than God. Israel's pride is what brought about their downfall. Our pride and will bring us as followers of Jesus under the discipline of God. May we fall on our face before a mighty God!

Amos Chapter 5 serves as a breath of fresh air for us as we come out of the first four chapters. We see that as the first four chapters show God as just and righteousness through His judgment of the nations and Israel. In chapter five we see God's mercy and grace on display. He calls to His wayward people to seek Him and live. Seek Jesus today and live, truly live.

God does indeed call His people to holiness. In these two chapters He lays out His court case as to why He will judge Israel. We must then ask, then what is God telling us today?

What does it mean that God is a Just God? Is He thus wrathful? We will see throughout this book how God balances His justice and righteousness with His mercy. Amos explores the reality that God does not sit idly by as the world does injustices. There is a limit and a point at which God judges. In this epilogue to the book of John, John gives us one more story of the resurrected Jesus. He really did rise from the dead. John writes these things that you would belief it. We also see that following Jesus comes at a cost of our lives in whatever fashion that may mean. Yet we have this glorious call to follow Jesus as Lord and Savior. Will you believe in the Word made Flesh today? Will you, despite past failures, follow Jesus again and love Him about all else?

As the seemingly chaotic arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus unfold we see that what seems to be a situation spiraling out of control is going according to how Jesus had said over and over it would go. From the irony of the Romans mocking Jesus as a king and failing to see that it is a shadow of Him as true King, to Pilate's insistence that Jesus is innocent, to the repetition of "to fulfill Scripture", we see that the events of chapter 19 are a God orchestrated movement to redeem a lost and dying People. This chapter asks the question is Jesus worthy of all of our service, communion with Him, praise of Him, decision to follow Him, and belief in Him? We must ask this question of our lives, Is Jesus worthy? What if it costs me something? He is Worthy. What if others don't like me following Jesus? He is worthy. What if I don't want to obey Jesus? He is worthy of our obedience. Jesus is truly worthy, not because of what He does, though He does great things, but because of who He is. Will we truly believe and follow?

When everything is on the line, when all of the marbles are up for grabs where is our faith. Perhaps a better question, "who is our faith in?" We see here how from the disciples to Mary, Martha, and Lazurus, to the crowd their faith wanes when death is on the table. They have the author of life standing before them yet do not truly believe he can in fact save them. Brothers and sisters this mirrors our struggle in faith. We say "Yes I believe." But when the going gets tough we quickly seem to forget that Jesus is our victory. In fact, here is the main idea: Jesus is victory over death! He is the final resurrection and true life. Why does our faith fail to grasp that?

What do you think of when you think of bread? We often do not think about it in the same way that John's first century audience did. Another thought from this text is when do we take the Bible literally? We see that first, bread was a staple food, that was life sustaining and important to survival, much different from our add on idea of bread. We will next see that we take the Bible literally, literally, when it is meant to be literal. Listen to the episode and I promise that is explained. The chapter closes with Peter making the bold statement that all earthly things pale in comparison to knowing Jesus who is the only source of eternal life.

Where do you find your must satisfaction in this life? Is it food, material things, music, or maybe the things that Jesus can do for you? Or is it Jesus Himself. Jesus must be what we are most satisfied with. We see that the crowd in this chapter follows Jesus because of the signs and later because they think that He can keep feeding them, but when he offers them true bread of heaven through believing in Him they are taken aback. In Acts 17 Paul demonstrates how to do this as he is recorded as going to the synagogue "as usual" for it was his habit to do so. God uses all things, even hardships to advance His Kingdom. In this chapter, Paul follows God's call to go to Macedonia where he will be beaten and arrested. Why would God call Paul to go to a place where hardships would be waiting? Hardships can sometimes be a vehicle of God's grace. For Paul, being placed in the prison wasn't ideal but it leads him to a chance to share Christ and lead the jailor and his family to believe in Jesus. So it is with us, that our hardships should point others to a closer relationship with Jesus.

How do we measure success or even calling? If we take the world's definition, then Paul and Barnabas should have quit after the first two cities. The formula for this chapter is preaching-interest-opposition-persecution-ran out of the city. But I've left an important detail out. Paul and Barnabas made many disciples in each city, evidenced by their going back to encourage and build up those disciples. So the main idea for our chapter is that God works through hardships and persecution to bring glory and kingdom growth.
Throughout the different cities, Paul clearly shows what it looks like to endure hardships. Often when life gets hard we assume it's time to do something else, but we will miss God moving if we don't endure until God calls us to move. Look to the chapter to see the story unfold.
Stick to the important things for God's glory. God is with Paul and Barnabas, through all of their trials. Their time wasn't an easy one, they again were run out, beaten, and threatened. God doesn't promise an easy life and ministry. He promises to be there with and empower us to endure. Paul understands this when he says in verse 22, "Part of entering the kingdom of God involves hardship." Paul himself endured many trials and hardships throughout his ministry.
Your ministry success must be reliant on God and not current circumstances. Do all that you do through, in, and with the power of God.

In all we do, we do them in the power of the Holy Spirit, being saturated in the presence of God. What does this look like? It looks like understanding the importance of seeking God. It's been a part of my personal journey recently, as it seems to be a theme God is teaching me through my Bible reading, a book I'm reading, and sermons I am listening to. This was important to the early church it should be for us too. Second, we must understand that time with God takes time. Don't rush, spend quality time with God. Even in setting Paul and Barnabas apart for the mission of God, the church in Antioch took time to fully give the whole process to God. What if our time looked like that? When we do spend time with God we get the privilege of being a part of what he is doing around the world. So pray, fast, and seek God in all that you do.

God triumphs over all opposition, even persecution and imprisonment lead to God's glory and growth of His kingdom! God's people will endure persecution. James is killed and others were violently attacked. Peter was arrested. The church's response was to pray. They do not pray as a last resort but as their primary weapon. Pray especially and initially in troubled times.
Peter for the second time, escapes from prison. With the odds stacked against him, Peter sleeps. In fact he has to be nudged awake and even then he is in a daze. He then goes through a rather humorous episode of trying to get inside the building where the church was praying for him.
Finally, we see that God has the final word in all things. Herod failed to stop the church, but God strikes him dead and the church continues to march on.

What do we do when God is moving, but some of His people aren't? To make that clearer, what do we do with naysayers? You will have times of ministry that are going well, but some of the church people aren't excited to see God moving. What do we do with that? We see, that the gospel isn't hindered by naysayers. Our hope is that the gospel will change the hearts of those who don't get excited about the gospel.

I feel that it is necessary to respond to a friend's class they have started to activate people's prophetic ministry. In this episode, I specifically want to lock in on how this friend used Acts 2:14-18 and applied to it a meaning that was not meant by the writer or Peter who is speaking. It is important to know how to read Scripture and not to simply read it to get what we want to see out of it. I think that when we read the Bible out of context it builds unbiblical ideas and practices that are not helpful for spiritual growth. Most importantly when we misread Scripture we miss all that God is saying to us. Also, teaching based on misinterpreted Scripture leads other believers into dangerous waters. I deal with this problem with respect for my friend and all those who will disagree with me. I do want to encourage all believers to learn how to meet with God in His Word and how to rightly apply it to our lives. Thank you again for listening. The early church saw exponential growth. Such growth was not without its growing pains. We look in today on a situation between the Greek-speaking widows and the Hebrew-speaking widows and how the early church solved the complaint. How do we speak the Word of God with boldness? Step one is we will not be able to unless we have been with and met with Jesus. Two, the Holy Spirit must be working through us. We see in this chapter the Holy Spirit has filled Peter and John and they boldly proclaim the gospel. When they face threats from the religious leaders of their day they go to the church and pray for more boldness. God grants them more boldness and they continue speaking the word of God with all boldness.

What a revolutionary thought for modern times from ancient times. We don't have to live according to the cravings of our earthly bodies. Our modern culture screams that we must live according to the orientations of our "true selves" as if the apex of existence is self-realization. Yet God has called us to self-sacrifice. We must be and are called to be more than the sum of ourselves, likes, orientations, and feelings. We are called to something far greater; we are called to be children of God. The Spirit leads us to a new, true identity; adopted sons and daughters of God. We live according to His Spirit, to His Word. We become heirs to his kingdom. We are invited into the sufferings of Christ so that we may also embrace and share in the glory of Christ which He will share with us as well!

Peter and John heal a man in the Temple. The healing draws a large crowd and Peter and John seize the opportunity and share the gospel fulfilling the call of Jesus to be His witnesses. Will we be in awe of God today? Be in awe of the gospel!

What does it look like for the people of God to be filled with the Holy Spirit? It looks like a people, who are proclaiming the gospel, listening to and digging into the Word of God, devoting themselves to fellowship, and devoting themselves to prayer. Does this reflect your life? If so, continue to grow in Christ. If not, I implore you to reflect on this chapter and to reflect on the gospel. How do you view the resurrected Jesus? Is he a means to establish your kingdom, or is Jesus the Savior of all who has commanded His people, bought by His blood, to grow His kingdom. Jesus has called all of his people to be his witnesses. No, he does not give you a suggestion, but says, "you will be" my witnesses. But Jesus does not ask us to do this in our power but in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the power and engine behind the expansion of the church.

What comes to mind when you think of the book of Acts? I think of, Spirit baptism, casting lots, tongues of fire, shipwrecks, snake bites, and many more exciting stories. But most of all I think of a mass movement of God through His people. I think of a movement of God that would turn the world upside down. A movement that would take scared, trembling fishermen and transform them into brave fishers of men, no longer afraid of death and completely sold out to Christ. I think of a brother who thought His older brother was crazy transforming into a leader in the early church. I think of a community of about 120 people, transforming into a community of expanding thousands. I think of a former enemy of God transforming into a man of God that no earthly power could dissuade. I think of a fledging movement in Jerusalem that would go on to touch every corner of the known world.
These are the images that come to mind when I think of Acts. And all of these great movements find their source of power from the indwelling Holy Spirit. May we also be Jesus’s witnesses empowered and emboldened by the Holy Spirit. May we be the people that turn the world upside down. I hope you can join me as we journey through the book of Acts, I'll see you there.

Our spouse is to be a seal on our hearts. Only they have access. They are to be a seal on our arms so that others may see our love for our spouse. In this finale we see the main themes of the book revisited. We are to awaken love at the right time and we are to teach others to do the same. We are to do the same spiritually. Set God as a seal upon your heart. Seek Him exclusively. Love God and do not chase the gods of this world.

Nehemiah concludes with a longing for true spiritual cleansing. We see that the people of Judah have once again fallen into sin. We also find ourselves with unholy alliances and allowing people who are outside of the kingdom of God to influence our worship. Nehemiah is a shadow of a greater cleansing and a need for hope beyond human effort. We need a Savior that is both God and man! We need Jesus!

People often ask, if there is any grace in the Old Testament. My response is always, it's everywhere if you've read it. We often try to minimize our sin. We also often treat God as though He is a fluffy loveable puppy who exists for our happiness. However, our sin is wretched before God and warrants the wrath of God. Jesus will take his disciples to the garden to pray. In so he demonstrates a model prayer through a time of anxiety. "Let this cup pass," "not my will but your's be done." This type of praying becomes applicable during times of trials and tribulations, "let this cancer pass." is a worthy prayer, but we must conclude, "yet not what I will, but your will be done." We must submit to the sovereignty of God. Also, this chapter shows Jesus on trial and Peter has his own internal trial as well.

What does it take to truly follow Jesus? It takes everything. Numerous people approach Jesus in this chapter. Some to test him, some to ask him a favor, another to ask a question about eternal life, and one just to ask for mercy and healing. Children approach Jesus in humility whereas his disciples see him as a gateway to power. Jesus sets the record clear. The transfiguration leaves no doubt that Jesus is God and King! Following this amazing moment was one of the most beautiful teaching moments for Jesus and his three disciples. His disciples fail to cast out a demon, fail to understand His Kingdom and allusions to his death and resurrection. Our understanding is lacking and our faith weak, we believe Jesus, help our unbelief.
