On this week’s episode of Just Love, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan Anthony D’Agostino, Ed.D. is the Chief Executive Officer of the St. Patrick’s Center – a homeless services organization in St. Louis that is an affiliated agency in the Catholic Charities of St. Louis Federation. Anthony talks to us about the work of the St. Patrick’s Center and how, through initiatives like its Hospital to Housing Program, it helps to transform the lives of homeless individuals and families through the pandemic and beyond. George B. Horton is the Director of the Department of Social & Community Development of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, where he oversees the Cause for the Canonization of Dorothy Day. During this lead-up to the sentencing of Dorothy Day’s granddaughter, Martha Hennesy, and other members of the Kingsbay Plowshares 7, for civil disobedience they participated in at the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia back in 2018, George shares with us a bit about both the progress of the Cause of Canonization of Dorothy Day, as well as reflecting on the witness of her granddaughter Martha Hennesy in living in imitation of her grandmother’s life of active non-violence. Esmeralda Hoscoy is the Regional Director for Catholic Charities Community Services Regional Office in Yonkers, New York. Esmeralda talks to us about the work that she and her office do with Day Laborers, men and women who work in the informal economy whose means of support has been decimated by the social distancing strictures and industry closures that have been put in place to fight the spread of the COVID-19 infection. Esmeralda talks about what Catholic Charities has been doing to help these families survive and start to think and plan for their future. Vanessa Figaro-Rock is the Chief Operating Officer for Programs at Good Counsel Homes, maternity residences for homeless women and their children across the New York metropolitan area that is an Affiliated Agency of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Vanessa talks to us about the work of Good council Homes and how, despite the Coronavirus pandemic, it continues to welcome and provide for women and their children in need, albeit in new and different ways. In this week’s episode of JustLove, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan talks about global homeless and migration. Lydia Stazen is the Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness, a non-profit organization based in Chicago that is dedicated to supporting an emerging global movement to end street homelessness. This week, the United Nations is holding its 58th Commission for Social Development dedicated this year to examine the issue of homelessness. Lydia shares with us some of the proceedings she has been part of, what has been resolved about the state of the homeless around the world, and what next steps the United Nations, advocacy organizations like her own Institute of Global Homelessness, and ordinary concerned people can take to help solve this seemingly intractable problem. Sr. Norma Pimentel is a religious sister with the Missionaries of Jesus and the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. Sr. Norma joins us to talk about her work with Central American asylum seekers at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen Texas run by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. Kevin Sullivan talks about World AIDS Day and Catholic Charities of NY’s partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints for the Giving Machines. Andrea Combs, along with other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, partnered with a group of local and international charities – including Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York – in a kick-off event and ribbon cutting ceremony outside the Mormon Temple in New York City to officially open New York City’s first “Giving Machines.” The Giving Machines are vending machines that allow users to purchase various items, including socks, meals, mosquito netting, and solar lamps, that will be distributed to those in need by aid organizations like Catholic Charities partnering with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on their “Giving Machine” Project this holiday season. Meagan Frederick, Director of Development and Public Relations at Incarnation Children’s Center, will be commemorating World AIDS Day on Saturday. Meagan shares a bit about the work of Incarnation Children’s Center in caring for children and young adults living with HIV and AIDS and how, through the comprehensive care that is provided at Incarnation Children’s Center, many of the young people who had once been presumed “terminal” have improved enormously clinically and gone on to live full and fruitful lives through advances in medication, and medical treatment and psycho-social care. Msgr. Michael M. Boland is the President and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. On this Thanksgiving weekend, Msgr. Boland will be sharing with our listeners two particular ways that Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago celebrates Thanksgiving with those that they serve: a Thanksgiving Celebration for Refugees sponsored by the Junior Board of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the 15th Annual Catholic Charities Thanksgiving Lunch for the Homeless being held at Catholic Charities downtown Chicago Headquarters on Thanksgiving Day. Camille Rivera is the National Political and Legislative Director of RWDSU – The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store International Union. On this weekend, that is arguably the biggest retail weekend of the year, Camille will be sharing with us a bit about the recent deal that Amazon has made to build “hub” in Long Island City, and some concerns that she and others have regarding the tradeoffs between the financial incentives New York City and New York State gave to Amazon to entice them to locate in Long Island City, and how residents and workers who live in the local community stand to benefit from this deal.

Kelly, who also serves as the Regional Coordinator for Catholic Charities of South Carolina in the Pee Dee Region in the Northeastern corner of the State, updates Msgr. Sullivan and our listeners about the impact that Hurricane Florence and the flooding that its rain has caused has had on her state over the past 10 days, and how Catholic Charities of Charleston, Inc. is helping those who have been impacted by the storm. Stephanie Ali is a Counselor and Vocational Coordinator for CREATE, Inc., an Affiliated Agency of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York located up in Harlem, New York. CREATE, Inc. provides a host of substance abuse and mental health treatment services, as well as providing young adult transitional housing and supportive services. Stephanie Ali discusses with Msgr. Sullivan her work at CREATE, Inc. in assisting residents at their Young Adults Residence Program to continue with their studies and to find jobs and housing. Jeff Zearfos is the owner of the social enterprise Common Cause Catering located in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was named 2018 Catholic Charities USA Volunteer of the Year for the volunteer work that he has done for the past 13 years as the lead cook for the Marian House Soup Kitchen of Catholic Charities of Central Colorado. During this rrun-upto National Volunteer’s Week (April 15th through 21st ), Msgr. Sullivan talks with Jeff about his receipt of CCUSA’s highest national volunteer honor for 2018, as well as the volunteer work that he does for Catholic Charities of Central Colorado that inspired the award. Cynthia will be updating our listeners about how her organization is helping the displaced recover from Hurricane Harvey, as well as how they are helping to feed the less fortunate in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston on Thanksgiving Day The Tone family – Don, Cathleen, and their daughter Maggie (age 15 years) – are parishioners of Resurrection Parish in Rye, NY. The Family will be speaking to Msgr. Sullivan about their experience volunteering for the past 7 years – down at “Part of the Solution – P.O.T.S.” in the Bronx. They and other families from their parish annually help to serve nearly 1,000 meals – including 230 freshly cooked turkeys – to people visiting the P.O.T.S. community dining room on Thanksgiving Day.
