Bible Teaching you can Trust

We can trip over a curb or broken pavement in the sidewalk. We may fall but then rise to continue our journey. In today's message, Dr. John echoes Jesus' words to the disciples. "You all will fall." They all protested, but every one of them fell. Of the 12, eleven repented and rose to continue their journey of faith. We are foolish to think we can predict our response to a crisis of faith. We lean closely upon the grace of our Lord.

At times, we speak of the deity of Jesus as a way to make a point. We bear witness to others that Jesus is God, so we point to the Scriptures. It's the secret to learning the piano, running a marathon or having a successful marriage. It's called "endurance." One scale at a time, keep your legs moving and offer love and grace each day. Endurance means to keep consistent over the long haul. That applies to our spiritual walk as well. Dr. John offers three keys to endurance of our faith, by which we persevere into glory.

A hypocrite wears a mask. It's a mask that hides defaults and conforms to surrounding expectations. In playing a role, hypocrites live fragmented lives. In Jesus, believers can abandon their masks. The grace of forgiveness and His new life in us allows us to drop pretence and live authentically. We are free to draw near to Him, press on with confidence and experience genuine love in community. We become real.

If we can't be good, we try to appear good. We do and say the right things to mask our internal failures. But appearing good can never replace obedience. Nothing replaces our need to do the will of God. It's an impossible task for us. But Jesus always does the will of the Father. Through Him, our requirement for obedience is fulfilled.

It's our default to manage our lives. We try to control the direction and outcomes of our thoughts, words, and deeds. We even try to manage our sin problem by fixing it, balancing the bad with the good or trying to outrun our sin with a fresh start. Dr. John teaches that we can't manage our sins away. Even the sacrifices of Old Covenant could not solve the problem of sin. Only a perfect Saviour has the power to put an end to sin.

Modern sensitivities would want to shape Christianity into a bloodless code of morality. The Bible prohibits it. We are quick to criticize the old once something new arrives. The new car reminds us of how antiquated our old car was! From Hebrews 9, Dr. John teaches on the value of the old covenant, even when the new one has come. The first covenant proclaimed that our sin creates a barrier between us and a holy God. That distance can only be crossed by God's initiative and God's design. Jesus is the only access for sinners to stand before our righteous Creator.

A covenant is a promise. It is the assurance of what will be. So why did God give two covenants to His people, the "Old and the New?" Dr. John teaches from Hebrews 8 to compare the covenants God has made. The new covenant is not a changing of purpose or a contradiction of the old. The covenant made by Jesus in His blood fulfills and enlarges what God had promised at Sinai. The covenant of Calvary grants the assurance of justice and grace.

Every collector knows that the real item is of more value than a copy of it. The book of Hebrews repeats this central truth. Today Dr. John teaches of a thirsty nation turning against Moses and challenging God Himself. They dared God and tested Him out of anger and doubt. By grace, God reveals Himself mighty and merciful, but He need never prove Himself to any man.

A Desert Experience: Where Faith Fails – Exodus 16:13-36

Israel’s work ethic was shaped by Egyptian slavery. A day off was unimagined. Now God was going to teach them to rest. In today’s sermon, we see God use manna as a tool of instruction. He would provide food for Israel every morning, except the Sabbath. The people would learn to take a Sabbath rest and suffer no loss. God was their sustenance and they were supplied through their obedience. Lessons still true for us today.

A Desert Experience: Can You Trust God? – Exodus 16:1-12

Hoarding is the practice of clinging to things now in case we need them for the future. While it may seem wise when it comes to food pantries or bank accounts, it won’t work for faith. In today’s message, Dr. John teaches on daily trust. Israel was to learn that yesterday’s confidence can’t be stored for tomorrow’s need. We live by faith and have to do it every day.

We assume that human need is the centre for missionary activity. Since our need is so great and obvious, it must be the motive for missions. In today’s message, Dr. John points to a different motive – a higher one. The foundation and motive for missional activity is the glory of God. That doesn’t suggest that the human need is insignificant. It does mean that in whatever missionary enterprise we undertake, God is to be glorified in the message of the cross.

In this message, Dr. John traces the history of spiritual warfare from Genesis to Revelation. He points to the cross of Jesus as the pivot of this battle. We are assured of victory by the death and resurrection of our Lord. The accuser of the saints has been cast out of Heaven and now patrols the Earth like a hungry lion. We exalt in the victory of the Lion of Judah. We live with eyes wide open for the lion of destruction.

It is possible for us to become too enamoured by angels or absorbed by demons. We should be informed, but only to the limits of the Scriptures and not speculation. In this third message, Dr. John continues teaching about angels. Why does God employ angelic agents to do what could be done by a word from His mouth? Clearly angels are not necessary to God, but they have a role to play in creation. Listen as Dr. john explains six things that angels do for God and for us.

Any discussion of the spirit world has to account for angels. In our culture, they are reduced to harmless chubby-cheeked cherubs which hang on Christmas trees. Set the childhood images aside and consider what powerful creatures God has made them to be.

At times we are cautioned not to burn any bridges behind us. It is thought to be wisdom to leave a back door option for returning. Dr. John points to Israel at the Red Sea and teaches that the crossing was like a burning bridge. God was closing any option for Israel to return to Egypt. The way of faith is forward. We must not use fear as a reason to return to what was. In His mercy, God may burn our bridges behind us.

Trust is not our default position. There has been much in life to teach us suspicion and cynicism. God calls us to abandon our self-protective ways and trust Him. Dr. John demonstrates the faithfulness of our God. The pattern of His power and provision for our lives becomes the platform on which faith stands. We may waiver and disappoint, but God never does.

"The just shall live by faith!" Faith is not only the gate to redemption, it is the path of redemption as well. Dr. John teaches from Exodus 13 and demonstrates how God both requires and grows trust within Israel. God led them away from battles because they were not ready. God commanded generosity to develop trust along the way. We can all be encouraged that God not only commands faith from us, but nurtures it within us.

Our faith is not novel but rooted in the Word and Ways of God.

There are scenes in life too terrible to imagine. We hear of a tragedy and struggle to conceive of the pain and loss. As Dr. John walks us through Exodus, we come to such a scene. The 10th plague is the death of every firstborn in Egypt. Only those households covered by the passover blood are protected. Can there be any worse death imaginable? Dr. John points us to the sacrifice of Jesus; the Firstborn of God; the Passover lamb for us all. Out of death, God brings redemption and life everlasting.

The Exodus is the central event in Jewish faith and Old Testament narrative. It is the account of judgement, deliverance and shed blood. In this message, Dr. John demonstrates that this 10th plague foreshadows the central event in Christian faith and the Biblical narrative. Jesus Christ is the Passover Lamb for all. His life and death speak of judgement, deliverance and shed blood. Both events prove that we cannot rescue ourselves. We are redeemed by faith in the merciful acts of God.

We have lost the sense of night's darkness. With the flick of a switch we can read in the dark, take a midnight stroll, or work past sunset. But, for generations, the dark of night was to be feared. In this message, Dr. John walks us through the 9th plague - the descent of darkness upon Egypt. The darkness paralyzed Egypt for three days and was a shadow of what was to come: death. Darkness whispers judgement. As "children of the light", let us praise God for glorious rescue of the gospel found in Jesus Christ.

God is God and we are not. That truth is clear, but humanity still resists. Hearts can resist, deny, argue and rebel. The kingdom of self challenges the rule of God. The Shorter Westminster Catechism teaches that the chief end of man is "to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever." The glory of God is not only the ultimate purpose of humanity, it is the reason for all things. In this message, Dr. John reminds us that God's glory is the answer to every question of "Why?" Pharoah and all of Egypt were about to learn that through the plagues. It is our lesson as well.

Common sense suggests that when problems get worse, there's motivation to act wisely. An increasing clunk under the hood is reason to see a mechanic. But the human heart may not follow good sense. In this message, Dr. John demonstrates the rigidity of Pharoah's heart, even as the plagues get worse. As the plagues increase in intensity, so does the hardness of Pharoah's heart. Anyone who enters a contest of will against God is going to go from bad to worse.

The word "almost" conveys a vast difference. Almost rescued is not the same as being rescued! When God sends a second plague upon Egypt, Pharaoh almost changes his mind about letting Israel go free. But again, "almost" makes a big difference. In this message, Dr. John poses the question to us all, "Have we obeyed, or almost obeyed? Have we repented, or almost repented? Do we believe, or almost believe?" In matters of faith, almost is not enough.

Do we want Jesus and his gospel to go into the earth or would we rather have our own personal peace, safety and wealth outside of the gospel.

You only know if you are obedient to Christ when He asks you something you don’t want to do or when His commands become hard when everything within you screams out “I don’t want to do this, this costs too much.” It is then and only then when we discover whether or not we are his servants.

Jesus says, in verse 23 –“when they persecute you in one town, flee to the next.” Notice how important this verse is. Jesus is not saying that you must prove your faithfulness by going to prison or undergoing hostile treatment. He however is saying that we must acknowledge him before men that we must endure in the day of evil.

The Book of Revelation helps us do three things. It tells us how to live in the present hour. Secondly, it helps us to live with expectation that our Lord is indeed returning. And thirdly, in case we have missed it, it weaves together the grand narrative of the whole Bible and helps us say yes! That has been the grand story from front to back

Now that Christ had come the entire story line of the Old Testament is now made plain. And now God’ s plan to reach the corners of the earth with this great story of redemption begins, and would continue to fill the earth with His Glory.

The gospel writers present a powerful and compelling case that Jesus really is the Christ and the fulfillment of the covenants yet for all 4 of them, everything in the story, is leading to one central focal point. They are leading us to the cross and to the empty tomb.

We turn now to the next stage in the story. The descendants of Abraham became an extended family of 72. Abraham’ s descendants become refugees fleeing a famine in the Promised Land and living in Egypt.

We discover the beginning of the story of man, an alarming story in so many ways, yet God still has an ongoing purpose and plan.

So many of us have reduced the Bible to a series of stories of various people from who we can learn some important life lessons however we have not seen the grand narrative, the whole picture which utterly transforms everything we have ever believed about the world. For the next 2 weeks I want to retell the story of the whole Bible.

As we read Philippians and listen to the series Philippians: The Fellowship of the Gospel with Dr. John Neufeld, what becomes obvious is that unless we understand the definition of “fellowship”, we’ll miss the entire drama of the story. In the book of Philippians, Paul and the church in Philippi formed a fellowship of the gospel in order to preach Christ, form churches, and witness lives transformed in the heart of the Roman Empire. If we miss that, we miss the central purpose of Paul’s mission, and we miss our invitation to take part! So, what does it mean to centre our lives around the gospel? This 5-week series from Dr. Neufeld explores the book of Philippians in-depth, in order to discover how the gospel shapes and transforms believers in Christ.
