MAGNETIC MINDS ORIGINALLY FORMED TEN YEARS AGO AS A TWO-PIECE. TWO YEARS LATER, SINGER AND BASSIST CHRIS ORTIZ AND DRUMMER TIM WICK WROTE AND RELEASED THEIR FIRST FULL-LENGTH ALBUM, AUDIO RORSCHACH, A HEAVY, RHYTHMIC ROCK AND ROLL RECORD BENT ON FUSING BEATLES-ESQUE MELODIES WITH STONER-ROCK RIFFING. THEY IMMEDIATELY FELL TO WRITING MATERIAL, RECORDING FIVE SONGS THAT WOULD BECOME THE RECENTLY-RELEASED EP, RECOMPOSE. Milwaukee’s Large Print was born out of the disbandment of the band, Blonder in the summer of 2017. Blonder members James Brickner and Eric Risser continued to creating while honing their sound in the subsequent months following Blonder’s breakup. After rehearsing with a rotating cast of local musicians, James and Eric enlisted Andy Grygiel on drums, Jay Joslyn on bass, and Grace Mitchell on vocals. Large Print recorded their debut effort over a stretch of months in 2017 and 2018. That six-song EP explores thoughtful melodies, driving rhythm and experimental analog recording, all tied together with Grace’s ambling lyrical delivery. Neocaveman got their start in 2015 and their music has evolved into the indie progressive rock sound that they have become known for around the Midwest, constructed with complicated arrangements and rich harmonies that blend a capella gospel sounds with fingerstyle psychedelia. The project is a collaboration of Peter Hair and Paul Tyree of Faux Fiction, Samuel Balistreri of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee fingerstyle guitar program, Simon Beno of American Monroe, and Jeremy Moroder of Epimotive. Floor Model has powered through nineteen years of original Milwaukee Grey Collar punk rock spanning two centuries. Garage rock harmonies powered by hardcore riffs under socially pointed lyrics and sly punk jabs. They have released six recordings – Absent Minded Salvation, 3, More Throttle, Apply Resistance, Humiliation Payday and the smash single, “Swillwaukee”. Jeff is the creative engine. Cairns is the main project of Milwaukee musician, John Larkin, who debuted his initial recordings in 2015. The newest release, Entanglement, is Cairns’ debut full-length with a full band. While performed and recorded by mostly Larkin, himself, he added contributions from other Milwaukee musicians to fill out the soundscape – Caley Conway, Eli Smith, Eddie Chapman, Sam Pekarske and Joe Kirschling are now also part of the live ensemble. Layered and expansive, Entanglement masks its complex time signatures and rhythms with layers of meticulous sound and dynamic swells through every track and nearly every song features drastic stylistic changes throughout. No two moments carry the same weight. This release marks significant development in the complexity of Cairns’ sound and Larkin’s songwriting. Its name is derived from the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, befitting of the direction the project has taken. MKE x CHI’s SleeperSound latest release, In Media Res, finds the band crawling into crates of experimental rock, noir indie folk, ambient obscurities, and eclectic imports to create a unique statement on American guitar-rock. Sleepersound started as a solo project by David D’Antonio (guitars, vocals, synths), and was chosen by him to “invoke the desire to awaken ourselves gradually and ajar from existential slumbers that make us aloof to each other and our world.” Sleepersound developed from a previous project when David was rooted in St. Louis and Chicago — the latter where David was born and raised, coming to Milwaukee by way of Chicago, then Naples, Italy, and St. Louis. Guitarist Kenny Buesing is from Sheboygan, currently in Riverwest, Milwaukee. Drummer Dan Niedziejko grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and lives just outside it, in Cudahy. Bassist Mike Campise grew up in Chicago and now resides in Milwaukee as well. In Media Res is a Latin phrase meaning, “In the middle of things.” The sequence of songs – “Give to Time,” “Passengers,” “Gravity Well,” b/w “Terminals,” “Slow Moon,” and “Error Tape” – “all focus on the journey from life into death,” Mike says. “An exploration behind the veil of existence and into the realm of our place in the larger mechanism.” “Convergence, too,” Dan adds. “Things starting while in the middle of other things but coming together to form something new and putting other things to bed.” In Media Res was made of compositions documented, produced, and performed in drummer Dan Niedziejko’s studio, Indian Not the Arrow. The icy winds from Lake Michigan seem to blow through the six chapters, the songs are augmented by the esoteric talents of producer Kramer at Noise Miami, a true collaborator with such avant-garage bands as Galaxy 500, Low, Bongwater, Daniel Johnston, Ween, and Saeta, among others. You can hear both the original Krautrock but also the basement show-equivalent from the more elegant instrumental math-rock bands inspired by them in the 90s. Deeply rooted in jazz, r&b, and blues, Coop draws in vocal influences such as Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green, while also being a highly accomplished saxophonist and instrumental soloist. Each member of Nobody Famous is a superstar on their own. The band has made a name for themselves in the Fox Cities and won’t be contained any longer! Soul. Rhythm and Blues. The words conjure romantic images of sweat dripping dancers swaying slowly to infectious Motown grooves, Staxx and Chess chart toppers oozing from the band stand with a harmonic intensity so real it broke your heart. Tender ballads peppered with generous portions of Hammond organ and scorched barn burners precisely punctuated by a ruthless horn section, these were the songs to have you on your feet before the singer even started. Red Stuff started out as an instrumental 2 piece in the winter of 2007 comprised of Kelly Wanderer on electrified autoharp and Tom Wanderer on electric guitar. This duo released a 4 song 7” in the summer of 2008, but were eager to expand the group and the sound.
An early stint with drummer Peterson Kyuk-White got things off the ground, and his contributions to the Best Of Hot Rod Love LP and a handful of shows turned an esoteric musical project into a rock band. Joe Scheltema took over on drums for a memorable summer that culminated in the Pagan Rock 10”. After working with two drummers as many years, the current lineup was cemented in late 2011 with the addition of full time member Steve Tiber.
After almost 5 years of playing shows but failing to capture new material in a satisfactory recording, a spontaneous night of improvisation was released as the Woodfaces album. Invigorated by this new approach, a long stalled record called Saccharine Underground was revived and completed.
More than a decade in, 2018 finds Red Stuff working more than ever. The instrumentation often changes, and a song can come out of thin air or go nowhere at all, but the thread that brings it all together is the simple joy of playing in a band.

Over the years, Tyler St Clair has been known to exploit archaic electronics to great effect. His penchant for the unconventional is best on display in the form of his Milwaukee-based record label ‘Radiograffiti’ where he’s curated a roster of like-minded boundary-pushers and sonic destroyers. He’s affiliated with the world’s first D.I.Y synthesizer hackspace/storefront ‘Modular Addict’ and skirts the fringe of ubiquity by making music under a multitude of aliases.
Despite his usual aggressive approach to music, his latest project, Black Lines, Din Sky, showcases his most accessible work to date. The radio-friendly “misery.dev – select” 7-inch comfortably spent a few weeks on top of Milwaukee’s Bandcamp chart and has quickly become a must-have within distributor networks, where it’s available in more than 15 countries, across six continents.
St Clair has also released material under Midwest hardcore label Distort, played Blip Fest (NY), and the infamous Schizophrenia warehouse parties where he once shared the stage with members of the Detroit S.W.A.T. His music is featured in the home brew ‘Tracker Hero’ video game, and he made an appearance in the ‘Viva Amiga’ documentary, which recently toured multiple worldwide film festival circuits. His upcoming full-length “misery.dev” is set for an early 2019 release.

Black Eagle Child is guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Michael Jantz. Founded in 2008, Black Eagle Child’s music ranges in style from simple folks instrumentals, to loop-based guitar songs, to experimentally-produced long-form pieces. His work has been published on Preservation Records, Under the Spire Recordings, and Geology Records, among others. Black Eagle Child’s most recent release, Six Lugubrious Airs, is a collection of brief folk airs, and is co-released by himself and Milwaukee’s Geology Records.

Jeff Mitchell is a native of rural Minnesota transplanted to Milwaukee. His time spent living in small towns is essential to his songs and is obvious to listeners from out of the way places. He is a lifelong devotee of early music and singing old country songs passed down in his family. He also came of age in some gloriously ragged garage bands. Over the past 20 years or so, his interests in writing and experimentation have grown to combine his portraits of Midwestern life with a strange undercurrent of dark, electronic psychedelia.
Jeff is perhaps best known as collaborator with others. He was a founding member of Field Report and is also known for his live work with Duluth finger-picker Charlie Parr. Most recently, Jeff has been performing with the instrumental group, Dryhouse Ruins, with Damian Strigens (ex. Field Report, Testa Rosa), Jim Warchol (Death Blues) and Ben Derickson (Collections of Colonies of Bees, All Tiny Creatures).
While Jeff may remain obscure as a solo artist, he continues to build a body of work which resonates very deeply with certain people. His songs are stark in their honesty and vulnerability but filled with an eerie beauty revealed by careful listening.

Milwaukee’s Immortal Girlfriend is a fresh “retro” brother duo of William and Kevin Bush, who use atmospheric layering of electronics to wash over their melodic vocals. While the heart and soul of their sounds might be immersed in nostalgia, their sound is thoroughly modern and akin to chill + synth wave outfits like Washed Out, SURVIVE and Bonobo.
In their spare creative time, Immortal Girlfriend also operate as producers out of a music studio in Lannon, laying down sounds for a growing list of Milwaukee artists, including WebsterX and Lex Allen.
Although Immortal Girlfriend have been active on the scene for a brief time, the two go far back with their initial collaborative creations in their parents’ basement. Those creative days have produced their debut ‘Daybreak’ EP (released in 2017) and the single “Summer Dream” (released in May of this year). Immortal Girlfriend has graced the stage of Summerfest, Turner Hall Ballroom, Cactus Club and more, supporting diverse bills of music ranging from pop, soul, hip hop and electronic.
Flat Teeth are a Milwaukee-based five-piece, comprised of current and former members of John the Savage, Paper Holland, Twelve Ounce Prophet, Hester Mofet and the Invaders.
Drawing on the more melodic side of 90s indie rock and emo, the band’s music recalls the sounds of everyone from The Get Up Kids and Mock Orange to darker and moodier acts like No Knife and Cursive. Interlocking guitars, layered vocal harmonies and driving rhythms are all present in the band’s output, and those seeking straightforward and energetic songwriting will find much to enjoy in Flat Teeth.

Ako is an indie-pop band from Milwaukee. The band formed in 2016 when multi-instrumentalists Mark Soriano and Gabrielle Powell met through their college radio station and began to play in Soriano’s childhood home. Drawing from influences from 70’s rock to R&B, Ako quickly grew their audience, their first album, And You, garnering attention from Milwaukee publication Breaking & Entering, who wrote, “sounds far beyond a debut project.” Their current EP, everything is ok, was met with similar acclaim with 88.9 praising its “catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms” and the band’s take on “complicated and introspective subjects with a dewy approach that’s both relevant and nostalgic.” The duo is heading back to the studio to record their second full-length in the fall.

For two decades, Collections of Colonies of Bees have existed in various forms and incarnations, beginning with Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller (who split time with post-rock band Pele).
From there, the line-up grew and evolved. At one time, Nick Sanborn — currently in the spotlight as one-half of Sylvan Esso — counted himself as a member. At another, the group joined forces with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release two albums under the moniker Volcano Choir. (In fact, it was Vernon who proclaimed of his collaborators: “If the world was perfect, they would be as big as U2.”)
Never content to paint the soundscape twice, the previously instrumental Bees now come outfitted with vocalist Marielle Allschwang and a new full-length, HAWAII, that finds the Wisconsin-based ensemble harvesting the fertile intersection between experimental and pop to maximum effect.

Self-described as a psychedelic chamber ensemble for the disobedient and melancholic youth, Milwaukee’s SOCIAL CATERPILLAR—a five-piece project composed of Kyle Smith on guitar and vocals, Eli Smith on Bass, Eric Ash on Violin, K-Rad on Cello, and Whisper Crystal on drums—has been playing and recording a unique style of music together since 2016.

Milwaukee’s Sundial Mottos (Graham Hunt, Alisa Rodriguez, Brady Murphy and Charles Markowiak) take a shared love of old-school indie Brit-pop and add a patina of fuzzy guitars to those sweet and tender hooks.
The quartet’s unfussy approach and time spent “spending dollar bills on cheap booze and thrills / not ashamed” lends them a decidedly down to earth air. Rodriguez sings those lyrics on “Fool” [from the band’s five-song debut EP] and though the outgoing breath is tired, it feels like a comfortable place to be; to know you do foolish things and that that’s just part of life. Sundial Mottos easily entwines the complacent with the hopeful, creating a pleasantly pragmatic air that is relate-able and plainly, sounds really good. And although Sundial Mottos were pretty young during the 90s / early 00s indie pop heyday, they certainly have unraveled the magic thread that made groups like Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh, Built to Spill and Slowdive (and beyond) so unitedly appealing.

At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, ‘My Mother the Moon,’ a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience.
Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, the album is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Dorth Nakota are just a group of friends that always talked about doing something together. After past bands broke up, they started hanging out and playing music for fun, not looking to do much until we were forced to actually learn our songs to play their first show with Viet Cong (now called Preoccupations) in late 2015.
The band features: Chris Roland (guitar / vocals – ex Worrier), Jon Murray (vocals), Kristofer Taylor (bass – ex Sleepcomesdown / Worrier), Jerome O’Callaghan (drums – ex Coo Woo / Worrier), Jesse Harmon (guitar – ex Coo Woo / Piles)…and as of last week… Sean Hirthe (saxophone – Soul Low / Paper Holland).
Dorth Nakota, while bringing sounds from their old groups, strike up a new sound that effortlessly blends noise with melody. The band takes a casual approach, focusing more on the friendships and hanging out over sticking to a schedule, yet there are plans to record a proper album this year and the band will be opening shows for Palm and for Protomartyr (both coming up, soon) as well as the Breeders this May.

In 2012, Xposed 4Heads had the opportunity to “regroup” for the “Lest We Forget” festival and has been going strong ever since. X4 has had numerous acclaimed releases in the synth pop art rock genre. Guest artists have included No Wave legend James Chance, Tuxedomoon co-founder Blaine Reininger, Grammy winner Frank London from the Klezmatics and Deborah Evan from The Flying Lizards (among others).
2017’s ‘Urgency Squad’ stayed on WMSE’s Top Ten play list for 6 months. Xposed 4Heads are a party band that puts on a high energy, witty show that is compared to a mash-up between Devo and the B52’s which features the Star Girls, two aliens that have come for peace and dancing.

Nickel & Rose is an American folk-music duo made up of upright bassist Johanna Rose and guitarist Carl Nichols. They formed in the summer of 2016 and spent their first winter and the following spring traveling Europe, playing dozens of shows in France, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. While in Berlin they recorded their EP, Oh Sweet Love, released in April 2017.
Oh Sweet Love, is a sweet-sounding auditory souvenir of Nichols’ and Rose’s four month European journey and a recorded testament to the two-piece’s ability to turn tough times into something vibrant with help from a traveling companion.
Nickel & Rose have influences that span the spectrum of American music. Carl’s background brings elements of West African music and blues while Johanna brings her experience playing bluegrass, folk and jazz. From loss and heartbreak to love, Nickel & Rose address the human experience with gentle harmonies and soul-stirring cries. With a shared appreciation for traditional music and a desire to break rules, the two have have created a unique sound that embodies Americana’s past and future.

Milwaukee’s mathy power-pop katamari of hooks, riffs, effects, and harmonies return with a new collection of fuzzed-out indie-rock nuggets, Maybe It’s Just the Weather!
Bassist Michael Wojtasiak and drummer DJ Hostettler set the foundation with bouncy, driving, and occasionally unconventional rhythms, while guitarist Christopher Maury teams with keyboardist/electric autoharp strummer Dixie Jacobs to layer a hyperactive wall of sound, made all the catchier by sour-patch-sweet vocal melodies more often than not led by Dixie’s powerful voice and assisted by shouting rejoinders from DJ and Michael.

King Eye & the Squirts formed in 2015 after vocalist/guitarist Steve Look and Drummer Jesse Buskov met and shared their affinity for 60’s surf music as co-workers at the late Hotel Foster.
Enlisting the help of guitarist Adam Nelson and John the Savage bassist Paul Fleming, the quartet began gigging as an instrumental surf cover band, but quickly evolved their own vocal-heavy surf/grunge/garage style.
For the past few years, King Eye & the Squirts has continued gigging around Milwaukee and in 2017, is pleased to announce the release of their debut self-produced full-length LP Demonseed. As the album nears its release, the band anticipates a bright future filled with endless Miller High Life and all their favorite hometown haunts.

Since the band’s inception in 2007, Milwaukee’s Northless has been at the forefront of all things sludgy, noisy, and misanthropic. Now in their tenth year, the band brings us their newest full-length, Last Bastion of Cowardice, in partnership with Gilead Media & Halo of Flies (vinyl), Hand of Death (tape), and Init Records (CD).
Throughout the last decade, Northless has honed in on many of the darkest parts of the human condition as inspiration for their brooding, heavy dirges. Previous full-length albums Clandestine Abuse (2011) and World Keeps Sinking (2013) both touched on topics both intensely personal and universally identifiable, while this new record achieves a similar darkness by way of a conceptual narrative. Last Bastion of Cowardice tells a dark tale of revenge, sorrow, and redemption denied, as the protagonist learns the true wage of sin. To work in concert with these themes the band pushed sonically in many different directions to extremes previously unrealized by Northless. Dynamic, emotional, and expressive approaches are more varied than before through heavy nods to death metal, noise rock, and post rock.
Northless has always been known as a band that possesses incredible tone in their sound, an effort which is supported with the assistance of long-time collaborator and engineer Shane Hochstetler at Howl Street Studios, who recorded and mixed the album before sending it off to be mastered by Carl Saff. The theme of the album is tied in visually with artwork created by Paul Jeffrey.
Last Bastion of Cowardice will be available on November 17th. Pre-orders will be available from the respective labels beginning October 5th.

The Rhythm Chicken is a non-musical enigma wrapped in uncooked bacon. He’s played in the woman’s bathroom at the Cactus Club and to a crowd of 40,000 at Miller Park. He’s played at the finish line of a marathon in Las Vegas and on a pontoon boat in the River Elbe in downtown Dresden during the fireworks finale of Stadtfest. He’s played at sausage shops and fish boils. He’s played in Poland, German, Kansas, California, and Cudahy.
He has played to a crowd of zero in the woods, and he’s had Deathcab for Cutie open up for him. All this might lead you to believe he’s notable on some level, but he’s not. He’s just a chicken who lives above a soup shop.

Originally from Milwaukee, Lili began performing in her early years through church and elementary school choirs. By the time she turned ten, she began writing her own original lyrics. Following her completion at Milwaukee High School of the Arts where she was trained in classical, opera, and jazz, Lili graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management from her alma mater, Columbia College Chicago. It was during her time at Columbia that she made her entrance into the Chicago music scene.
Initially known for her stand-out guest features with Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, Lili K established herself as a knockout solo star with the April 2015 release of her self-produced, full-length debut album RUBY. Originally from Milwaukee, Lili established herself as a staple in the Chicago music scene in 2012. She’s done numerous TV appearances on ABC and FOX, has performed at major festivals including Made In America, North Coast Music Festival, and Pitchfork, and has garnered glowing praise from VIBE, Huffington Post, EW, Consequence of Sound, Complex, and many more top-tier music tastemakers. Jay Z’s entertainment streaming service Tidal dubbed Lili as their very first “Tidal Rising” artist, and the Chicago Reader named her “Best Jazz Musician” in their annual “Best of Chicago” reader’s choice poll in 2015.
After taking a step out of the spotlight to record her new album Planet of Flowers with The Lili K Band, Lili has returned with exciting new visuals and projects. In November 2016, Lili released the single “Magic.” A song that combats sexism and misogyny, “Magic” has since been shared and promoted by rape crisis centers, domestic violence centers, and universities. As of February 2017, Lili has a weekly residency with Soho House Chicago, and has landed a recurring role as a background vocalist on Season 3 of Fox’s hit show Empire.
Lili and the Lili K Band are currently working on their second studio album, entitled Planet of Flowers. It is slated to release in 2018.

“It’s no easy task for an artist to sum up who they are in one album, much less in one song. And yet, here, at the start of the first verse of the first song of his newest album, Juiceboxxx lays it all out for you:
Out of my mind but I’m a hell of a guy, I got the PMA, that’s just an FYI / I got a J-O-B and that’s to stay alive, 24/7 not 9 to 5…
“So begins “Freaking Out” on Freaked Out American Loser, the latest album from Juiceboxxx, the Milwaukee-bred punk rap artist who is quite simply the first and last of his kind all at once…
“Juiceboxxx grew up in the ‘2000s within the noise, punk rock, and underground rap communities of Wisconsin, and while those banners still fly high independently today, there are very few other artists who not only understand that venn diagram but who are also actively attempting to merge those sounds cohesively. There is something singular about a Juiceboxxx show, wherein he might run through some songs that remind you of Public Enemy—whom Juiceboxxx went on tour with, in Canada—or Beastie Boys. There will be some fast punk songs, and the whole thing might end on an anthemic track like “Never Surrender Forever” that has a Springsteen or Jonathan Richman influence. Yes, there are guitars, but he raps, too; Juice came out of those noise-damaged scenes, and everything he does is coated in a level of intensity. He sticks to his guns. He sleeps with his tension.
““There’s something weirdly eccentric about what I do that puts it to the left of culture,” he says. “I’m trying to do something eclectic but rooted in parameters I set for myself. Almost like when you watch a Beck show from the ’90s… There’s not that many people connecting the dots between rap music and raw rock-and-roll, attempting to use guitars in a different way. I’m not saying I’m the only one, but there’s not many taking classic rap influences and pushing it to more of a damaged-yet-anthemic punk zone.”
“Freaked Out American Loser is a punk rap blast that captures the anarchic, aggressive spirit of Juiceboxxx’s live show while also adding a new level of polish, focus, and dare we say, professionalism. “I’m looking at Beastie Boys as the Ramones or something, and trying to build on that language; looking at Public Enemy within the lens of punk rock,” Juiceboxxx says.”

Dead is Dead write patient songs with a metallic edge with a slight lean towards the darker side of post rock. Comprised of guitarist Eric Madl, bassist Nick Sheppard and drummer Mark Sheppard, Dead is Dead create patient and moody post metal, trading in the uniformity and unabashed Black Sabbath influence of their contemporaries for something far less gimmicky and far more organic.
While no doubt influenced by some of metal’s finest pioneers in sludge, one cannot deny the similarities Dead is Dead share with Forstella Ford, the defunct but legendary former band of Nick and Mark Sheppard. Forstella Ford were masters of blending the aggressive with the melodic, the simplistic with the angular, the abstract with the accessible. While some of these qualities are less obvious in Dead is Dead‘s music, Dead is Dead certainly possess a spaciness and sonic width that greatly recalls certain moments of the now inactive band.
A solid rhythmic foundation coupled with spacious guitar work and tastefully impassioned vocals, Dead is Dead manage to not stray away from the metallic side of the genre while still incorporating less abrasive elements into their songwriting. The slow crawl of album opener “Faults and Failings” opens with an open and spacious clean guitar, patiently building for the first minute before exploding into a ominously fuzzed out lead. “Reproach of Man” features a lead that certainly recalls Forstella Ford, hypnotic and angular. “Pull Down the Cross” finds the band trading in the sludge for something a bit more upbeat, and do so with grace, Album closer “Earth as it’s Slowly Consumed by the Sun”clocks in at nearly ten minutes, eventually showcasing the band’s only foray into groovy stoner rock-esque riffage.

Experience a modern revival of the classic Southern Delta Blues sound with Milwaukee three-piece, Bootleg Bessie. Mark Becker (bass), Josh Rauen (guitar + lead vocals) and Richard “Dicky” Paul (drums) pay tribute to American roots rock with high-energy, instrumental improvisations, exploring artists who helped influence the tried and true classic rock sound. The band’s latest release, Here You Go, was just released earlier this year.
Snag confronts themes of antipathy for late-capitalism, police violence, and environmental catastrophe with fury and despair. Theirs is a generation with a deep sense of injustice and impending loss. They draw influence from the early 2000s touchstones City of Caterpillar, Majority Rule, and Brand New, bands that informed an adolescent sneer that has matured into an adulthood of ambivalence and precarity. Milwaukee’s Rose of the West creates cinematic and dreamy synth-pop with a dark side, juxtaposing both cool and warm atmospherics, lead by Gina Barrington’s otherworldly vocals. Barrington’s knack for storytelling on the band’s debut singles – “Hunters Will” and “Love & War” – lends depth to those cool and warm sounds where nothing is as it seems, creating a listening experience that is pleasantly unsettling and alluring.

A collection of Milwaukee music-scene veterans have formed a new band, Moon Rats, and are stoked to announce the release of their debut album, Highway Lord.
The band itself is an amalgamation of musicians from bands (Calliope, The Rashita Joneses, Sonic J and Myles Coyne) whose styles range wildly from folk to psych and stoner rock.
The album developed a sound which the band has dubbed ‘stoner-psych rat-metal for motorcycle enthusiasts’ as it took them through seven creeping and heavily fuzz-laden tracks, which follow the path of realization for the legendary hero, the Highway Lord.
Coyote is a four piece rock ‘n’ roll band out of southern Wisconsin. 2017 has the band touring their Wisconsin stomping grounds and surrounding Midwestern states in celebration of the release of their debut record Fool’s Gold.
A musical anecdote of sorts, from natural landscapes to vibrant cities, the album is a reflection of the camaraderie of the road and what it means to be a working class band. The album draws influence from Americana staples of the Laurel Canyon scene of the 70’s such as Jackson Browne and The Eagles, to the magic of improvisation enlightened by the Grateful Dead, all the way to the rhythmic swings of greats such as Santana. It’s a nostalgic album with a modern edge.
Strangelander is: Steve Peplin, David Wake, Amanda Huff, Aaron Gardner, Jeremy Kuzniar, Michael Ritter and Patrick Reinholz; a collective of likeminded musicians who create jazz with warm humanity, connecting sound + mind together.

Wipe your tears, put on your Sunday best & listen. Milwaukee’s Liv Mueller is a songstress who has lived in the likes of Nashville, Austin and the fine Midwest. Her vocals are a beautiful combination of sparkle and smoke, taking any listener to another time,when artists like Peggy Lee and Connie Francis reigned.
Liv started singing and writing years ago, in a Rockabilly band called The Screaming Lillies; barely 19, she packed up and relocated to herself to Nashville from the Midwest where she performed at places like Tootsies and The Rose Room while supplementing her income occasionally by playing for money on the streets with an open guitar case.
Not long after Nashville, Austin became her next home wherein she formed the first incarnation of The Lovelies, reforming the band after returning to the Midwest is where The Lovelies had the most success, recording four records,and playing relentlessly over an eight year span.
Two albums were released under her next endeavor, The Dark Horse Project. Production team Marc Hutner and Grant Curry (Pleasure Club) helped her to streamline the new sounds that were galloping in her head, capturing a beautiful and haunted landscape of listening. Recording deep in the south of the Louisiana bayou proved to be just what she needed to redefine her next phase of writing and performing.
In the last several years, Liv prefers to play solo, releasing two records – the first solo release entitled Liv Sings: Love Songs For The Forlorn And Misguided, and the most recent (released in spring of 2017), Liv Sings: Light Of The Valley Shadow Of The Mountain; she composed, played, recorded and mixed both albums nearly entirely alone in her home studio.
Raised on a steady diet of B-movies, 50’s horror comics, and all things schlock, Brain-Bats play dark, frantic punk rock that is definitely not of this world.
Formed in 2016, the band features former members of Milwaukee bands Burning Sons, Cry Coyote, Plastic Pets, Jones Island Flood, & Sleazybeats.
On June 24th, 2017 they will be releasing their debut 7” Road Kill From Outer Space b/w Night Terrors with a show at Hot Pop Art Gallery & Boutique in the Third Ward at 8pm.
Milwaukee’s Rocket Cat guitarist Christopher Guse (Parallel), bassist Dave Maurer (Parallel, Signal Daddy), drummer Steve Vorass (I’m not a Pilot, Bright Black, Mouse Corn) and vocalist/lyricist Justine Trudeaux (Smack Leveaux) skillfully blend their backgrounds for a combination that yields a supercharged sound that’s at once fresh and familiar, forward-focused and reflective, unpredictable yet accessible, and always lushly melodic.
After a long hiatus from songwriting, Trudeaux crossed back into a forgotten world of creativity when an unexpected series of personal connections led her to Guse, Maurer and Vorass. This experience of reconnecting inspired the storyline of the band’s debut EP, Radiant Transmission, which chronicles her year-long journey of reflection, risk-taking and reawakening through Rocket Cat.
“I’ve lived in a number cities across the country and in Europe so I’m amazed I found these guys here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after years away from the music industry,” Trudeaux says. “It’s mind-blowing that we get along so well. I connect so viscerally to the sound they are creating, and each time they send me bits of music to tinker with, I instantly hear songs in my head.”
Joseph Huber was a founding member of Milwaukee’s .357 String Band.
The .357 String band, despite it’s abrupt breakup, still continues to gain popularity and is known as one of the most influential groups in the recent insurgent country and bluegrass movement.
As a solo musician, Huber has been prolific and gaining ground; Huber’s 4th solo release, The Suffering Stage is a shift both in writing style and in its filled-out production style…[looking] beyond his usual minimalist folk recordings. It features many of Milwaukee’s best players, such as Ryan Knudson on pedal steel; Dustin Dobernig on keys; Andrew Koenig on electric guitar; as well as his long-time touring band members–Jason Loveall on fiddle; and Eston Bennett on bass.
Match Stick is a tour-de-force rock/jazz fusion group from Milwaukee featuring Max Bowen on guitar, Mitch Shiner on vibraphone, Steve Peplin on bass VI and Nick Lang on drums.
With influences ranging from the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Rage Against the Machine, Match Stick performs their original compositions with technical wizardry and deep musicality.

Cairns began back in early 2013 following the release of a self-titled EP. Back then, the live format was simpler and quieter, staying truer to the bedroom recordings done by John Larkin. The project was originally intended to remain in a simple format – light percussion, sparse acoustic/electric guitar, keyboard – but quickly built into something more aggressive and dynamic, evolving beyond what could be considered a solo project.
The latest release, Current, was released in June of 2016. These songs were originally written and recorded by John, but in the process of preparing to perform them live, the songs strayed from the original recordings. This process created something much more organic, influenced by the different perspectives of each member of the group.
The latest incarnation features Caley Conway on bass, Eli Smith on drums, Eddie Chapman on electric organ and percussion, and D’amato on bari sax. It’s worth noting that everyone in Cairns has their own project that they actively pursue. Caley and D’amato each have projects under their own names, Eli performs solo as Honeymooners, and Eddie fronts a band called Gauss.
Upcoming releases include a pair of collaboratively written songs that were recorded by Kevin Dixon as well as three music videos directed and shot by Sam Kirchoff. These will all be released sometime throughout the summer.
Upcoming shows are July 7th at Circle A with Wavvy V; Aug 4 with Har-di-har, JE Sunde, and Bum Alum; and Breadfest, which will be happening mid-August.

After signing to Chicago-based label Closed Sessions last year, Milwaukee rapper WebsterX has delivered his full-length debut, Daymares. The 15-track project is a deeply personal dive into the rapper’s psyche, as he wrestles with his doubts and fears, but, ultimately, provides glimmers of hope throughout. The cohesive effort centers around Milwaukee, and WebsterX enlists production from budding hometown talent like Q the Sun and oddCouple to help him soundtrack his journey up to this point.
“Daymares is an accumulation of my life from years 2013-2017, the whole road of this WebsterX thing,” he explained to The FADER over email. “A rollercoaster of ups and downs that got me to this point, the insane experiences I’ve been able to be a part of with my friends by pursuing art, and my rise in my home city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and beyond.”

Ravi/Lola is a 60’s inspired psychedelic baroque/neo-toytown pop group from Milwaukee. Ravi/Lola began as a home recording project in 2008 by Casey Seymour with collaborators James Green and Nick Wieczorkowski. Two albums (Ravi/Lola, II: Ravi’s Tramadol) and 5 EPs (Collections 3-7) have been released from the home recording era.
In 2015, the band evolved into a live group consisting of Casey Seymour, Nick Wieczorkowski, Robert Thomas, and Anton Sieger. On June 2nd, 2017, the first album consisting of the live group, Shape Up Shoulders, will be released via CD, Bandcamp, and major online streaming services.

About the band:
Sara’s Story: Born into a multicultural and musical family, Sara grew up in Southern Italy where she was exposed early to a variety of musical genres and expressions.
She began writing her own music from an early age, even before she began her training in classical guitar. While obtaining her degree at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome, Italy, she continued cultivating her love for songwriting and all types of musical genres by playing and singing in a variety of groups and ensembles.
She moved to the USA in 2010. Since then she has been continuing to grow musically by teaching and performing both as a solo artist and with other musicians, until she met Kenny.
Kenny’s Story: A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Kenny began his study of classical piano at age five and guitar at age twelve. He began his early jazz studies with local guitar veteran Roger Brotherhood. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Jazz Studies and also attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. During his high school years Kenny won various outstanding soloist awards, including “Best Class A Soloist” at the prestigious Eau Claire Jazz Festival.
Kenny attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He then returned to Milwaukee and finished his degree in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee while performing actively around the city. Then in January 2015, completely by chance, Kenny met Sara.
There comes a point in every long-running band’s career when listeners (and writers) start tossing around words like “veterans” and “fixtures.” Ready or not, The Fatty Acids have arrived at that point. Over the course of seven-plus years, three full-length albums, and an untold number of shows, the frantic and ebullient Fatties have become stalwart stars of a diverse and glowing Milwaukee music scene. Their confetti-cannon-combination of chaotic “scramble-pop” and psyched-out synth has made them local favorites ten times over. But The Fatties are far from grizzled vets. As evidenced by the first (double) single from their upcoming album, Dogs Of Entertainment, The Fatty Acids are as fresh as ever, and veteran status suits them just fine.

Gauss is a Milwaukee musical collective formed in 2012 with origins in the Riverwest basement scene.
Punk music inspires their ethos and intensity and a desire to escape punk music propels their continual evolution in sound and songwriting.
Now featuring trumpet, violin, and keys, Gauss appears to be a post-rock chamber group. However, they’re equally capable of hair-rising feedback, subtle pop covers, backing up rappers, and making enchanting new sounds every year.
Gauss is getting ready to release brand new material and will be playing two upcoming shows in April: the first on Friday, April 21st at the High Dive (which is a benefit for the MacCannon Brown Homeless Sanctuary) and Saturday, April 29th (for Arte Para Todos 2017 with Foreign Goods).
Milwaukee’s CTT’s debut self-titled album spins tales of the desperate road, convenience store trysts, Rust Belt anthems and memoirs of unbridled lonesome success. Equal parts punk, blues, country and metal instill the tracks with a mix of elements true to the experience of a Mack truck crashing into a fast food drive-thru for after show catering.
The band idea was formed by a tequila-soaked Carlo Santiago who instructed the other members that they were to join his band or suffer the consequences of missed opportunity to rock the heck out. Within a few months, the band recorded their debut and have been wrenching audiences ever since.

Rocket Paloma is a four-piece rock outfit with a heavy folk foundation and progressive edge based out of Milwaukee. Their music blends imaginative leads atop a forceful and driving rhythm section with soaring vocals and crafted storytelling. Starting off as a solo act, Joey Kerner assembled a band to further enhance the impact of her storytelling.
With each member coming from different backgrounds ranging from classical to jazz and metal to funk, Rocket Paloma melds their stylistic differences into a truly unique, genre-bending experience.
Jason Todd (“JTodd “) and Lia Manley-DeRuiter (“Lunaversol9”) are no strangers to Milwaukee’s hip hop scene, although they do dip out for lengthy periods. Todd’s prowess on the beats and cagey vocal delivery paired Manley-DeRuiter’s smooth poetry makes the pair’s ear-turning brand of blended funk, soul, electro and hip hop into something that’s energizing, sweet and smart.

Rooted in Milwaukee, the Zach Pietrini Band is a five-piece Americana force.
They craft brutally honest, instantly familiar songs that uphold old country standards but incorporate new rock sensibilities. With the diverse approach of Gram Parsons, the writing style of Ryan Adams, and the live show of Jason Isbell, the Zach Pietrini Band is the total Americana package.
Zach Pietrini is releasing his 5th album Holding Onto Ghosts; a loud-yet-vulnerable exploration into letting go of the things that haunt him. The band will be hitting the road in March all around the Midwest to share this new work, including an official release show at Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. on Friday, March 3rd.
Piles is a three piece band from Milwaukee including Nolan on bass and vocals, Drew on drums, and Jesse on guitar and vocals. Piles will be releasing their second LP, Expeller, on Gloss Records on March 14th.
“When Ava Antonie, Ava Gessner and Lola Flores met at the first annual GirlsRock MKE camp in the summer of 2013, they were three young kids just looking to have fun and make some noise. The girls were 8, 9 and 10-yrs old, respectively, and not once did their age make them think they couldn’t do something big. From their very first show in a local bar on a school night, six months after becoming friends and band mates, Negative/Positive has offered beguiling lyrics and three strong role models for wannabe rockers of all ages and genders. Their self-contained battle cry is a string of catchy, indie rock singles featuring Gessner’s nimble vocals and guitar, Flores’ throbbing bass, and Antonie’s big beat.
“The girls, students from three different Milwaukee Public Schools (Burdick, Golda Meir, and Fernwood Montessori), continue to create their own music without the aid of outside composers or adult assistance. After saving the profits from t-shirt sales over a period of two years, they recorded and released their first album, Lumanescent, in August 2016. Their EP features five original singles with self-penned lyrics that reference experiences they love and things they despise.
“The girls currently don’t have some big, master plan to get signed or wow the world with their sound. Instead, they just want to keep having fun and make a lot more noise.
Zecháriah Ruffin — “Zed Kenzo” — is a multifaceted musician. Having spent time in choirs and learning piano as a young child to fronting a hardcore band (Youth Crush), Ruffin eventually gravitated more into singing and rapping over her own beats.
Zed Kenzo is a natural-born collaborator and has written, recorded, produced and released a multitude of singles with guests such as Chris Siegel, Strehlow, Q the Sun, Queen Tut, Chants and Lorde Fredd33. Her strong vocal delivery suits her beatmaking skills and the best avenue to appreciate her skills is at a live performance.

Haunter is a ramshackle outfit of slackers currently residing in Milwaukee. The group started making music in Stevens Point back in 2011, released two full albums, two EPs, and then in late 2015 began writing and recording for their newest, biggest album, Worm.
Worm is an exploration of all the sounds you heard coming out of your big brother/sister’s hi-fi back in the 90’s, from bands like Galaxie 500, Duster, Acetone, or Codeine. Haunter takes those sounds and harnesses them in a very despondent way that lacks energy, but it’s alright. It’s alright.

The Pukes came together during the spring of 2015 in a fit of spontaneity; Jules Frank (who crawled out from the swamps of Florida where he was raised by alligators, relying heavily on the native Garfish and snails for sustenance) first met the often elusive Sam Sharkey at the West Allis Karaoke State Championship. Not long after, the two met Ryan King (in the dusty basement of a year-round Halloween store, shopping for a new VCR) and asked him what he was doing next Saturday night. And That, boys and girls, is how it happened.
The Glacial Speed began in 2014 when long time friends and musical collaborators Ashley Altadonna and Mike Carey (both formerly of the band, New Blind Nationals) started writing songs together again after nearly a decade-long hiatus. They were joined by Chris Van Gompel (Ifihadahifi) and Kyle Martin (Kings Horses, Two Room Honeymoon) and started playing shows around Milwaukee and the Midwest in the summer of 2015. Last year they opened the Milwaukee Record stage at Pridefest, and began recording their first EP, “New Wilderness”, just released on January 1st.
One might first recognize Vincent VanGREAT as a producer from Milwaukee’s SAFS Crew, but recently (and more than ever), his singular name is sticking out since creating and releasing his own material last year.
His solo debut UnGREATful, was released in June and at it’s release, he told Milwaukee Record that his “Crew” still majorly influenced his own work. “This project was really organic. A lot of the beats I made were on the spot. Every hook was made during the production process and every artist that was featured kind of followed my lead on the record and got to come however they wanted, and got to be as creative as they wanted without me restricting them or telling them exactly what to do. SAFS Crew is also all about being a free creative spirit with no boundaries. So creating this project, I wanted to keep the same formula SAFS has always had, except with it being my own project, I got to sing on songs much more than in the past.

Milwaukee’s bedroom maestro of ethereally minimalistic electro-hip hop soundscapes a la Boards Of Canada, Casino Versus Japan and The Books is called LBN667 who has been releasing music on SoundCloud, Bandcamp and other avenues since 2012. His most recent release is called Leviathan; expect to hear his newest tracks from that release on Local/Live.
Dramatic Lovers take their name from the Italian anarchists that once upon time, held weekly meetings at the Cactus Club in Bay View, Wisconsin. Like those political crusaders of yesteryear, Dramatic Lovers (the band), have spent the past 20 years or so in various musical incarnations drinking, dreaming and playing shows together at The Cactus Club.
Friends for eternity and bandmates in cycles, Dramatic Lovers began less than a year ago after single show reunion as Decibully. Inspired once again, the group began to write new material and rounded out the line-up with the rhythm section from Maritime taking on more melodic roles. The new material holds roots in the time-tested shadows of Decibully and The Promise Ring/Maritime, but also looks backwards to the sounds of their youth. 80s and 90s shoegaze, emo & Brit-pop influence a maturing songwriting style that comes from decades of playing music together.

Call them “garage punk”, or “garage rock”, or just “rock”, just don’t call them early in the morning. The Mighty Deerlick has been more or less rocking the tri-state area since their formation in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1985, and has out-existed many of its contemporaries. Originally called The “Slow Pedestrians”, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever-prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), the legendary holiday tour-de-force “Bells to the Wall” (1991), and several songs they have written since, quickly became hits absolutely nowhere. They have shared the stage with Soul Asylum, the Replacements, the Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo/True Believers, Willie Nile and innumerable local legends. If you have not experienced the Deerlick live, you have truly not yet lived.
For WMSE’s special annual holiday Local/Live, the Mighty Deerlick will morph into…the Mighty Reindeerlick! Just for one night, these guys will bring you the holiday hits (alongside their own), including their beloved version of “Reindeer In the Sky”.

Acanthrophis is a blackened death metal band who formed in Milwaukee in spring of 2016 with the hopes of recreating and progressing upon the approach of ’90s bands like Dissection, Naglfar and God Dethroned.
While modern takes on extreme metal have gone a more abstract route, Acanthrophis seeks to return to the use of melodic structures to thematically express their take on black and death metal through complex yet dynamically concise songwriting. Debut EP Twilight of the Vanquisher’s Reign was released in July of 2016.
The folk septet Mead Lake’s Most Wanted — a group of writers-turned-musicians — hails from West Bend, just north of Milwaukee, but is beginning to make Milwaukee it’s musical home after the release of its debut, Sinners Sang the Crows.
They relay that the album was “recorded at Eisley Studios between October 2015 and February 2016 [and was] produced by Christian Seibert and features guest appearances from some of our favorite local musicians, including Christopher Porterfield (Field Report) and Peter Thomas (I’m Not A Pilot & the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra). Such an honor, to even utter their names in the context of our album. Sinners Sang The Crowswill be available (almost) everywhere July 10, 2016. ”
Honeymooners is the solo project of Eli Smith (previously of Wasted Islands and Lost Spirit).
The project started in May of 2012 when he was 16. It began as a solo, acoustic project and has gradually amassed different musical layers since, currently residing at the intersection of experimental music/sound art and more conventionally structured songs. He released his first EP, called Sleepwalking, in August of 2013, a release informed equally by folk/acoustic music and ambient music, and released his first full length album, called Night Beach, in August of 2016, featuring a traditional guitar/bass/drums setup augmented by extensive loops, samples, and field recordings. Smith is currently working on writing the next Honeymooners full-length, likely due for release sometime in 2017.
Luxi has been experimenting with electronic music since around 2007, transforming her more traditional song writing towards the obscure after taking an interest in computer programming and recording, she calls her style “futuregrungepop” while being influenced by a wide range of musical genres, including artists such as Portishead, Fever Ray, Pictureplane, Balam Acab, Tricky, Radiohead, Bjork, and many more…
Currently, Luxi is nearly finished with her sophomore full-length album, expected to be released early 2017, already having a collection of EPs and singles in her back catalogue of music, which can be found on her Bandcamp page. She also works as an audio curator for Joseph Gordon Levitt’s open collaboration production company, HitRecord, and has begun to mix and master tracks for other artists’ projects, more information about her music and events can be found at www.luxireally.com.

With sound inspirations from Musiq Soulchild, Dwele, J-Dilla and Jill Scott., it is a conceptual album that traverses the ups and downs of romantic relationships. vulnerability, passion and compromise. Production for the album began in 2013 but was interrupted by a lengthy vocal trauma that would leave the artist unable to speak or sing for months. Following a vocal cord surgery & traumatic year of recovery, B~Free became more dedicated than ever to share her musical gifts.
Hailed by The Shepherd Express as an “immaculately constructed R&B record,” with a style rooted in 90s R&B/neo Soul and traces of present day influences, “Ode” not only represents the many trials and turmoils of love, but the personification of an artist’s loss and reclaiming of her gift.

In 2010 Abby Jeanne hit the roads of america in her mini-van to begin her musical journey. She personally describes her music as “Rock n’ roll with a dreamers soul” and uses her music to guide listeners into transcending reality, her soulful voice full of raw emotion and on-point dynamics. While she has contributed vocals for Queen Tut and Milwaukee’s Foreign Goods, her solo work is where she truly shines, a young woman with an old soul evoking those big, soulful, downtempo R&B sounds of the sixties and 80s.

Milwaukee’s Siren (Katie Lafond), has solidified her presence in the scene with her memorable appearances and recordings with locals New Age Narcissism, Lex Allen, WebsterX and Kiings (listen to “Exoskeletal Love”, here). Siren’s stage presence and pipes make a statement that is truly her own, even with echoes of Adele, Grimes, Beyoncé and Amy Winehouse. As Siren ventures into releasng a debut solo album, she’s sure to bring that notoriety to a new level.

Ugly Brothers is well-deserving of its popularity on the Milwaukee folk scene; they have a penchant for thoughtful singer/songwriter lyrics crossed with the vocal intensity, harmonies, and catchy instrumentation to deliver them. Even though the sextet’s name is now only a partially correct descriptor, it still hearkens to the core of the group’s sound, priding itself on the “ugly” or unpolished sounds of raw Delta Blues melded with jazz swing, folk and more, the group originated around real life brothers Palmer and Alex Shah’s original collaboration. Since then, Ugly Brothers has expanded to include drummer Jay Joslyn, cellist Jenna Pepitone, violinist Anna Zaleski, and bassist Alex Heaton and celebrated their debut album’s release (16 Tiny Mountains), this past month.

Weighing in at 450 pounds with a combined income of $27 an hour, these three Midwestern lads embark on a fruitless rock ‘n roll journey. Influences ranging from pre power chord rock ‘n roll, early 2000’s emo and post rock; their songs have a natural ebb and flow created through the bond of three best friends. “Why search the world for great musicians when they’re right in your own backyard? Those were Shonn Hinton’s thoughts when forming the super powerhouse group, Shotgun, in 2014. Although the group had played together for over a decade in Milwaukee, they decided to emerge into their own band that would headline tours, showcasing their pocketed, classic sound. Shotgun’s opportunity to shine came when they performed songs live from Shonn Hinton’s 2014 instrumental gospel, rock and blues album The Happy Hour LP.

Bo Triplex is a funky, groovy, get down good time from Milwaukee. Lead by established local bassist Bo Triplex, his Beautiful Band adds to – and compliments – the booming bass lines. Audiences bounce with their high energy performances, awe at the sexy Bonita’s and remiss groups like Vanity 6, Parliament and the like.
Todd Umhoefer – aka Old Earth — got his start in Milwaukee as a solo performer and artist, looking for an outlet outside of his predominant collaborative efforts. “I met most of my collaborators in ’06 doing open mics around Milwaukee,” he mentioned in a 2013 interview. Those collaborators turned into a band as Umhoefer played in the initial iterations of Field Report (which was then known as Conrad Plymouth).
When Umhoefer ventured to solidly offer his solo efforts both in recording and in performance, he quickly gained attention for his mesmerizing songwriting — folk at its darkest and prettiest, inspired by golden oldies, punk and hip hop. Frantic-yet-grounded pacing, constant layers and washes of guitar on loop bolster his sincere lyrical poetry.
Although last year saw Umhoefer venture to California, he is back for a string of Midwest dates (among those, a stop at Acme Records and Inspiration Studios with Jon Mueller this weekend) and a stop by Local/Live to share with us his newest writings (Lay For June) and his plans for a California-by-Milwaukee musician existence.
Direct Hit is a band with members you might remember from now-defunct Milwaukee groups The Box Social, Paige Marshall, and The Accidents. They’ve taken a big step this year, signing a contract with Fat Wreck Chords, the San Francisco-based record label that’s released work from NOFX, The Lawrence Arms, Against Me!, Dillinger Four, Anti-Flag, Descendents, Madison’s own Masked Intruder, and countless other beloved punk acts over the course of its 25-year existence. The band’s new album, Wasted Mind, comes out on Friday, June 24.
Dr. Shrinker’ style of music can be described of a blend of thrash metal, death metal, progressive metal and hardcore. The term the band coined back in the 1980s for their brand of music is ‘Gore Core’.
“Dr. Shrinker’s first go-around was back in late 1987 – early 1991. In 2013, three of the original members decided to reform the band. The remaining original members are Rich [Noonan on vocals] and Jim [Potter on guitar].
Caley was eating expired sushi at her day job. Surprise and strange fortune were met in the bitter flavor of translucent cucumber, that meal. The Lucy Cukes would later form, curling snugly around Caley’s songs, its name gently alluding to the memory of that fateful, off cucumber. What will become of them all?
Caley Conway and her”Lucy Cukes”, the band she gathered from a group of childhood friends – Timothy Stone, Alex Heaton, and Robert Weiss — has, over the past few years, served her well, bolstering her already-strong singer-songwriter foundation.
Conway’s voice evokes folk vocalists from both the past (Joni Mitchell) and more recent (Alana Davis), her range impressive and her verbose lyricism a breath of fresh air in a scene where chorus / verse / chorus is pretty standard. Conway has released a couple of EPs (Discipline Soup and Of Songs on the Ukulele) but has never gotten to a full-length. It’s unfortunate that the demise of the band also times out as their first release (Silk For Life will be released later this summer), but the bittersweet nature of things doesn’t take away from the music, itself; the first single (“The Dreaming Genius Sees”) is solid. Recently previewed by Milwaukee Record, they write, “Conway’s vocals remain magnificent and altogether charming throughout.”
A soulful banshee coupling cascades melodies over upright and ivory…gives way to the raucous intrusion of electric strings, syncopated thunder claps, brass shimmers, the jarring howl of “in the morning I’ll be good as gone…jazz, folk, punk rock, and apparition-driven serene, NBC broadcasts the collective unconscious in fierce.

Antler House is an alternative/indie rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We released our debut album Through the Dirt in May 2014. Our next album Across the Waves is being released on April 30th. While Through the Dirt is a more relaxed, atmospheric, even folky record at times, Across the Waves is much more abrasive and dynamic, honing in on the sound of our live performances.
The Cow Ponies is a Milwaukee-based band founded by music veteran John Graham in 2015. Heat Death is a Milwaukee band combining self-oscillating fuzz, analog synthesis, and pounding drums with hints of noise-rock, shoegaze, industrial, and no-wave.
Formed in later 2015, Heat Death first arrived in the form of the apartment-recorded Obselescene EP. After months of playing through Milwaukee and with a finalized line-up and crafted sound, Heat Death retreated to the wilderness to record their forthcoming album.

A genre defying artist who has performed everywhere from underground dance parties & jazz clubs to rock venues & coffee shops, with artists such as: Boris, Lorn, Om Unit, Secret Chiefs 3, Doormouse, Gonjasufi, That One Guy, Captured! By Robots & DJ Abilities. For 5 years THE DEMIX has run the MELT music series in Milwaukee, which features original electronic music performed live & eclectic DJ sets by local & regional talent with occasional touring guests.
“As fate would have it, the same ’80s funk influences that have inspired [Kid] Millions and [Sage] Schwarm for years are in vogue right now, manifesting themselves not only in the disco revival of acts like Chromeo, but also in the updated West Coast club sounds of DJ Mustard. Even this summer’s big pop hit, Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” played with the same retro electro-hop influences.
“Millions and Schwarm aren’t naïve enough to think they could have anywhere near the kind of reach of those acts—even at its most conventional, …….Again is far weirder than anything currently getting commercial radio play—…“There’s a little bit of everything on the new record, from indie-rock guitars to R&B to even some 1940s Lennon Sisters-style vocals,” Schwarm says. “None of those sounds are samples; they’re all our own recordings. It’s a little all over the place, but it also has a thread, sort of a psychedelic-funk thread that runs through the whole album.””

Slow Walker’s initial 2011 release — Good For Business — burst onto the scene with its intense punk n roll sound, filled with plenty of pent up energy and just enough sweetness (to sound more melodic than most) and with an added balance of grunge and psych to keep listeners satiated and on their toes.
2016’s quartet lineup of Andy Patterson, Justin Harris, Nick Fulsher and Sam Reitman will see the release of a new cassette on Stale Heat Records (Robert Plantain’s Grunge Lords Vol. 1) and hopefully a continuation of the increasingly psych-ier output (as evidence by their 2014 s/t LP).
Slow Walker, alongside likeminded Milwaukee bands — Midnight Reruns, Rashita Joneses, Drugs Dragons and Platinum Boys — are all creating a beer-drenched and sparkling, but muddy, sound that is becoming synonymous with a new generation of Milwaukee rockers.
“WORK is a trio from Milwaukee. Guitar, bass and drums. Songs about love, debt, murder in small towns, whiffle ball injuries, and drinking too much. Sometimes fast pressured and punk. Sometimes slow and menacing. And sometimes we play jagged beats sideways while yelling. It really is a ball.
“We are releasing our second album Doing the Lords on February 26th. The Show is at Company Brewing, with Tigernite and Body Futures.”
“The Pukes came together during the spring of 2015 in a fit of spontaneity. Guitar player, Jules Frank, crawled from the swamps of Florida where he was raised by alligators and relied heavily on the native gar fish and snails for sustenance. First meeting the often elusive Sam Sharkey at the West Allis Karaoke State Championship, the two struck up an immediate musical kinship. Then, one night, Sam and Jules went to see the highly anticipated California Raisins reunion tour. As the show was going on, neither of the two couldn’t keep their eyes off the drummer (and it wasn’t because he was the only member of the band that wasn’t a raisin). After the show, they made it backstage, approached him, and asked him if this gig was as sweet as it tastes. He said he was ready for a new gig before things got way out of control. And that, boys and girls, is how The Pukes came together.”

The Sublimative Sessions are an interdimensional, interdisciplinary set of experiments, loosely curated by Allen and featuring a rotating ensemble cast of musicians from The Vega Star, The New Red Moons, The Great Lake Drifters, The Form, Lisa Ridgely and the Fainting Room, Twin Brother and The Scarring Party, among others.
Volumes 1-3 span nearly four years of chaos and creation, with a full and final release on the first full moon of 2016, featuring the fourth incarnation of Krystal Kuehl, Nathan Kilen, John Patek, Heidi Spencer and Jeff Brueggeman, for four special performances, never to be repeated and NOT to be missed.

But perhaps the most significant change is how much more Hochstetler… has integrated his drumming style into the band’s songs… Throughout The City Of Sun, you can hear Hochstetler’s toms rumbling to evoke a more conversational, swinging interpretation of precision death-metal pummeling,” furthering, “On ‘The Turning Of The Bones,’ ZEBRAS hit a lot more fiercely than I could have imagined them doing just a couple of years ago. Smith and Presley create a wall of low-end pestilence and Hochsteler’s snare scrambles up it, but the heaviness is also kinetic and dynamic. Smith’s synth bass part and Hochstetler’s drums work together to stir up crafty drag-and-sprint rhythms, and Presley’s vocals lurch against them with snarling spite.'”
It’s beginning to look a lot like…Waldochness. What is “Waldochness”, you might ask? Waldochness is what one gets when Milwaukee musician Mark Waldoch (of Milwaukee band The Celebrated Workingman) puts on one of his famously-infamous holiday music shindigs. For those of you who remember his glorious “Merry Cactmus” show a few years back, buckle in and get ready for another round of holiday cheer.

Dogs In Ecstasy is a band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The band is a vehicle for songs drawing on great works by The USA Is A Monster, The Rentals, the Breeders and Sparks and exploring characters (real and imaginary), objects (useful and stupid), and facts (true and false).
The trio just released a brand new album (Welcome 2 Hell) and are diving into our special (and always fun) fall membership drive version of Local/Live.
Brat Sounds was formed in November of 2014 after the release of the projects first self-titled EP. Three quarters of group are ex-members of the Milwaukee band Dinny Bulca. With the addition of a fourth member they became Brat Sounds. After releasing their first LP on cassette in September they hope to play bars and basements in Milwaukee and across the country.
“Formed in 2000 with no sense of when to call it a day, Milwaukee’s pop-noise chaos theorists have recently reconvened after some time on the shelf.

Join WMSE and IFIHadAHiFi for a farewell to the Milwaukee record label that they called home for years, Latest Flame Records. Latest Flame Records will be winding down with a pair of shows at Club Garibaldi on Friday, October 23rd and Saturday, October 24th.
To list out Milwaukeean Chris Rosenau’s current and former groups is to go back to the dusty depths of the late 90s (Vermont) and page through to the ever-morphing and still active projects of Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir. The current state of Rosenau sees him taking a solo flight, but not straying far from the source of his group musical roots, past or current; guitars create an undulating storyline that is lively and inspiring, joined together by loops and subtle auxiliary embellishments.
The recent output of Rosenau’s solo effort is a pair of songs recorded for a 2011 performance at Milwaukee’s Cactus Club that on record, adds that auxiliary instrumentation from his family members. “Pearl” and “F/Lynn” was released on Bandcamp this past summer and was re-performed for the Eaux Claires fesitval in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and a return show at the Cactus Club.
Milwaukee’s husband and wife trip-hop duo, Will It Burn think of their music as “upcycling for the ears.”
Featuring “Em” on the vocals and “Eight” on the beats, Will It Burn make it their art to take snippets of forgotten musical history and refashion those snippets, recovering lost words, poetry, phrases and decades-old culture by searching for gems on neglected wax.
The duo’s snippets and gems go to also fashion a sound that recalls moments of modern electronic bands such as Purity Ring and Broods as well as older moody offerings from Propellerheads and Massive Attack.
Coming right off of the release of their new album, In Other Circumstances, Will It Burn is getting set for a string of fall shows and beyond.
elvaliente El Valiente, fronted by Eric Caldera, a native Texan, grew up playing in Austin and San Antonio. Riding the dusty wave of Texas, Caldera made his move to Madison, Wisconsin and continued his penchant for writing music full of slow-burning and sparkly electric guitars, evoking the vast landscape he had just left.
The Onion (A.V. Club) writes, “The accomplished instrumental trio El Valiente have won over listeners on the strength of their evocative new album, El Topo. El Valiente lurk and charge through spaces as broad and bleak as the Grand Canyon. The group’s guitar,glockenspiel, bass, and drums prove boldest when drifting off into a skeletal void between slowcore, spaghetti western, and free jazz.”
Like a spore in a petri-dish, Phylums slowly cultivated in the dank basements of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2011. With a common goal of creating stripped-down, primitive rock n’ roll, members of Wisconsin acts Goodnight Loving, Head On Electric and Holy Sh** started banging out three-chord homages to the Sonics, Creedence, the Monks…any band with a simple message and no-frills attack.
Phylums took this primitive drive into Kyle Motor’s recording studio in Madison Wisconsin in summer 2014. It took the band under 24 hours to record their complete debut album on reel-to-reel eight track. Surfy guitar leads and wandering fuzz combined with a rhythm section of driving toms and bass make up the core instrumentation, but a shades of organ, piano, and even a vacuum cleaner add to the sonic palette.
The songs, ranging from party rave-ups to off-kilter introspections, eschew the traditional boy/girl tropes of most three chord songs and instead focus on, amongst other things, alienation, the afterlife, speech impediments, and the frustrating beauty and monotony of modern life.
Out of “drinkers’ paradise” Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Grasping at Straws blend the sounds of old Americana, country, and blues with a more modern, dissonant rock energy. With a canon of eclectic and catchy songs, the Straws use the traditional tools of multiple harmonies, banjo, guitar, fiddle and upright bass to create a well-rounded offering.
It's back-to-school so it's back to the Todd Wehr Auditorium and Conference Center for WMSE's next Local/Live. On Tuesday, September 1, not only will we host our special live radio segment with Marielle Allschawang, we've added a second band to the bill for the after-show-show - the Midwestern Charm. This concert is all a part of MSOE's first week of events for new and returning students.
Tigernite is a sequin-studded, riff-heavy glam rock creature native to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Songwriting inspired by witchcraft, comic books and beat poetry paired with the manic and soulful performances of frontwoman, Molly Roberts, drives Tigernite punching and kicking through a loud and colorful terrain with pop sensibility.
Straight from the bottom of the barrel these maws are scuzzy rockers. With killer bass lines, catchy riffs and all out vocals, The Rashita Joneses are sure to make vibrations that please. Though together for just less than four seasons, the band has already put out their debut EP just this last March 2015, toured relentlessly around the Midwest, released a split cassette with locals Filter Free Rodeo, and dropped [a]…7-inch.”
SIN BAD jumped onto the Milwaukee music scene about a year ago when they debuted a set of demos that local music media, Milwaukee Record, gave a lot of shouts about. The band has since played a ton of shows and spent some hours in the recording studio, getting ready to send some polished tracks out into the world sometime in the near future.

Creator of the “Godspel,” songwriter/performer Lord Fredd33 compels listeners with his deep, hypnotic drawl and mantra-style storytelling. His winding narratives depict life experiences abstracted and amplified as they run through his psyche. He has been quoted as saying “I’m doing this to save my soul,” explaining further that “music and performance are just as much a personal coping mechanism as they are a communal ritual.”
Testa Rosa, five years later since their last release II are back with more team-power, continuing on their trend of beautiful pop music and getting ready to release a brand new album. Singer Betty Blexrud-Strigens’ haunted pop songs sound at times like vintage girl-group and other times hinting at 4AD dream-jangle.. The best!
Brett Newski moved to Vietnam after becoming jobless, band-less, and girl-less in 2011. There, he wrote nearly 100 power-folk songs in the steaming city of Saigon for his latest release American Folk Armageddon. Newski now tours 200+ dates per year and has been featured in The Boston Globe, NoDepression, Rolling Stone S Africa, Guitar World, and Blurt Magazine. His style has been compared to Violent Femmes, Frank Turner, Jake Bugg, and Billy Bragg.

At the foot of the mountain, the joyous lake: Sun//Decrease is the sound of a cliff extending outward as you walk off. It is a new collaborative trio consisting of WC Tank (Antler Antennas, Stumblesome), Barry Paul Clark (adoptahighway, Tontine Ensemble) and Devin Drobka (Bell Dance Songs, Lesser Lakes Trio, Lady Cannon).
Kia Rap Princess bills herself as “extraordinary female hip-hop” and is “determined to bring about a positive change in Milwaukee and some dignity to the female emcee”. The fact that her new single is named “No Limit” should come as no surprise. The woman is on a mission with her music.
Estates are a three-piece alternative/emo band from Milwaukee. The band consists of Mike Carini, Charles Markowiak, and Matt Tomashek; the group’s latest album It’s Great to Be Alone will is out on Flannel Gurl.
