We made it to episode 300! Thanks for everyone who has been along for the ride. I enjoy talking shop with goalies so much I'd continue to do this even if we had 0 listeners but the fact that some of you love this conversations (and reach out to tell me so) is simply amazing!
Here's the episode this week - Ohio State goalie Jack Allen has taken about as unusual a path to D1 lacrosse as it gets — born in Syracuse, developed in Ohio, and then at age 10, moved to England, where men's lacrosse is a niche, blue-collar sport and his best option for reps was playing in a men's league with guys from the local Air Force bases.
In this episode, Jack talks about growing up drawn to the goalie position in every sport he played, what he actually looks for when studying goalies on film, and how he digs out of a slump with targeted reps. He opens up about the mental side — the sports psychology resources at Ohio State, the box-breathing reset he uses in the cage, and the French word he picked up on a trip that helps him flush a bad goal.
We also cover his recruiting story (the World Championships as his tape, and a lot of unanswered emails), what it means to play "like a rubber band, not a slinky" at 5'9", why up-the-hash shots were his toughest college adjustment, what he's learned practicing next to Casey "Big Tasty" Yamron, and coming off the bench cold against Rutgers.
Plus a full gear breakdown — STX Eclipse 3, memory mesh, RZR 2 gloves, and the backwards top string that changed his release.
Jack's closing message: lacrosse is the medicine game. Have fun with it, and give back to it.

In this episode, I’m joined by Riley Horoshko, Temple University’s starting goalie, recent graduate, and American Conference Goalie of the Year. Riley shares her lacrosse goalie journey, from stepping into the cage in fourth grade because it meant “less running,” to becoming a standout college goalie after spending much of her college career as a backup.
We talk about the lessons Riley learned from playing multiple sports, why she did not start club lacrosse until late in high school, and how she navigated the recruiting process by focusing on schools she would love even without lacrosse. Riley also opens up about the mental side of being a goalie, including comparison, pressure, staying relaxed, and how not playing for several seasons helped her rediscover her love for the game.
This conversation is packed with practical advice for goalies, especially taller goalies, backups waiting for their chance, and athletes who are trying to enjoy the game while still competing at a high level.
In this episode, we talk about:
Key Takeaways
Being a backup can still be a huge part of your growth. Riley spent much of her college career waiting for her chance, but she credits that time with helping her mature, support her teammates, and fall back in love with lacrosse.
Goalies play better when they are relaxed. Riley emphasized that she played her best when she was having fun, talking to defenders, dancing a little, staying present, and not letting every shot feel heavy.
Stop comparing and start redirecting your focus. For young goalies stuck comparing themselves to teammates or opponents, Riley’s advice is to look away, reset, talk to teammates, study the shooters, and put your attention somewhere useful.
Use the tools you have. As a taller goalie, Riley learned to use her height, wingspan, and legs to her advantage, especially when teams tried to target her low.
Keep the game simple when things feel hard. On tough days, Riley would focus on basic cues like tracking the top of the shooter’s stick and making the saves she knew she could make.
Memorable Quote
“Just find a way to make the sport fun and find a way to make yourself relaxed in the goal.”
About Riley Horoshko
Riley Horoshko is a goalie from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, and a recent graduate of Temple University. After stepping into goal in fourth grade, Riley went on to become Temple’s starting goalie and earn American Conference Goalie of the Year honors. She now coaches young goalies in the Lehigh Valley area.
Final Thoughts
Riley’s story is a great reminder that every goalie’s path looks different. You do not need to be the earliest recruit, the biggest gear person, or the starter from day one to have a great career. Stay ready, support your teammates, keep learning, and most importantly, find ways to enjoy the game.

Minnesota goalie Arsen Hanschuck joins the show to talk about his path from Ukraine to the MCLA, learning the position largely on his own, and the small adjustments that have shaped his game.
We get into his relaxed stance and why his hands sit closer together than most coaches teach, the mental prep routine he starts the night before games, and the "quiet feet" philosophy he uses inside the cage. Arsen also breaks down what MCLA lacrosse really looks like at the University of Minnesota — the travel schedule, the top programs in the country right now, and what it takes to land an at-large bid.
Plus: how he approaches coaching young goalies (build them up before you tear them down), why he thinks every goalie should string their own stick — he walks through his Nemesis 3 / StringKing Grizzly 2X / ghost pocket setup — and the mindset that helps him climb out of slumps.
A great listen for any goalie wrestling with the mental side of the position or eyeing club lacrosse in college.

Louisville goalie Hailey Richards joins the podcast to break down her journey from fifth-grade volunteer goalie in the East Bay to playing in the ACC. Hailey talks about training with Goldsmith Lacrosse growing up, working with Ted Glenn at Goalie Solutions throughout high school ("you're not human, you're a goalie"), and the mental game work she's done with Tim Cassie at Focus Lacrosse — including how saying "next play" with real confidence versus saying it half-heartedly completely changes the result.
She gets into the recruiting advice she wishes she'd had (keep an open mind and prioritize multi-coach camps), the adjustments she had to make jumping into ACC speed as a freshman, and the rough first start against UNC that lit the fire under her. Hailey also shares the mantra her coach Daly and sports psychologist Lindsay Cash have her leaning on this season — "your eyes are the anchor" — and how she uses it to stay present when her mind starts drifting to the last shot or the next one.
Plus: her 16-save double-OT performance against Ohio State, why little-Hailey check-ins help her get out of a slump, gear talk on the Gait setup with U's, and her final advice for goalies everywhere — have fun and trust yourself.

Carolina Chaos goalie Austin Kaut joins the podcast to break down his journey from scared youth attackman-turned-goalie to PLL champion.
Austin talks about growing up training with legends like Brian Dougherty and Drew Adams, learning the "phlow system" at NetNation, and the footwork techniques that transformed his game at Penn State under Coach Tambroni — including why going over the top on off-stick hip saves changed everything.
He gets into the details of the Championship Series run: how Carolina went from 0-2 to champions, his strategy of playing unorthodox sixes lacrosse (including switching to righty mid-game), and why limiting two-pointers was the key to the title.
Austin also shares real talk on being a backup in the PLL, the mental game tools he uses to reset after goals, and pays tribute to his late Penn State teammate Connor Darcy. Plus: the Doc Drill, pregame juggling rituals, and why training outside of practice is the ultimate separator.

We get into her journey from Concord, New Hampshire to Ann Arbor — including the recruiting summer she calls one of the best experiences of her life, bonding with her dad on road trips to tournaments across the country.
EJ breaks down the mental side of starting as a freshman in a D1 program, why she writes a list of affirmations before every game, and how repeating "I'm built for this" carried her through double overtime against BC.
She shares what she's learned training with Goaliesmith and working one-on-one with grad assistant Erin O'Grady (aka Obi-Wan Kenobi), including the biggest adjustment to her college game — playing smarter angles and creating lateral momentum to get behind faster shots.
We also get into baiting shooters, why she practices with her stick in the wrong hand just to test her explosion, the importance of building relationships with your defense off the field, and why she'll never take off the sweatpants in goal.

In this episode, Luke breaks down how his ice hockey goalie background shaped his lacrosse game — from cutting down angles to staying patient in the crease. He talks about the conversations with his buddies back home that taught him to think like a shooter, why he had to slow his game way down when he got to college, and how he trains himself to stay relaxed under pressure instead of tensing up on step-downs.

Colorado sophomore goalie Elena Oh’s path to the net is anything but traditional.
Before lacrosse, she spent 12 years competing in jump rope, and she didn’t even start playing goalie until after her freshman year of high school. Just a year and a half later, she found herself committing to Colorado — her only offer — and now she’s making a name for herself in the Big 12.
Last season, the former Lax Goalie Rat summer intern was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, earned Goalkeeper of the Week four times in a row, and set a career high in her second appearance with a .667 save percent in her second appearance ever.
In this episode, Elena talks about her journey from picking up a stick late to becoming Colorado’s starter as a freshman. From a PVC goal in her basement to her first appearance in a game versus the then-reigning national champions, Oh shares how much she simply loves the game and how that love has carried her through the pressures of college lacrosse.
For her, it’s about playing for fun, playing for her teammates, and remembering the “why” behind it all. She dives into the mental side of goalkeeping too — how she resets after tough moments and keeps perspective in the net.
Elena also reflects on representing Team Korea at the U20 World Championships, an experience that deepened her appreciation for different cultures and for the opportunities lacrosse has given her.
While the Korean national team wasn't a high finisher, Oh reflected on playing with a language barrier and being a part of the movement to spread the sport. Whether it’s competing on an international stage or making her first collegiate appearance against Northwestern, Elena plays with gratitude, joy, and a mindset that keeps her grounded.

As Mercyhurst University makes its ambitious leap into NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse, one name to watch between the pipes is sophomore goalie Jaret Jawor.
A native of Lockport, Illinois, Jawor played his high school lacrosse at Wheaton Academy, where he developed into a strong and athletic netminder. Now standing at 6-foot-3, Jawor brings size, reach, and a calming presence to the crease—traits that are quickly turning heads in his second collegiate season.
Jawor made his college debut in 2024, seeing time in six games as a freshman. He made 21 saves while posting a 6.95 goals-against average and an impressive .618 save percentage, finishing the season with a 1–0 record. His early showings hinted at potential, and in 2025, that potential has started to materialize.
This season, Jawor has stepped into a more active role, appearing in five games and making one start. Across 143 minutes of action, he's registered:
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
In NEC conference play, Jawor has stepped up under pressure, delivering a .571 save percentage across two appearances—highlighted by a standout 19-save performance against Robert Morris. Though the Lakers didn’t secure the win, Jawor’s poise and shot-stopping ability stood out in a hard-fought matchup.
The 2025 season is a landmark one for Mercyhurst. After years of dominance at the Division II level, the Lakers have entered the Division I stage with a youthful roster, a new head coach in Trey Keeley, and something to prove. While postseason eligibility will have to wait, performances from players like Jawor have helped Mercyhurst secure key wins—most notably a dominant 22–6 victory over Hampton.
As Mercyhurst builds its foundation in Division I, Jaret Jawor is emerging as a core piece of that future. With two years of eligibility left and a growing confidence in the cage, expect Jawor to continue evolving into one of the NEC’s top goaltenders.
Keep your eye on No. 12—he’s just getting started. Enjoy my conversation with future star Jaret Jawor.

She talks about how visualization and awareness of the game’s flow keep her mentally sharp, even when not in the cage. Pre-game, she keeps it simple with quick jogs and feel-good shots, focusing more on confidence than technical adjustments. The trust in her extensive training helps her feel ready when called upon as a backup goalie.
Izzy also dives into the importance of positive self-talk. Phrases like "Patience" and "Aggression" help her stay composed and assertive. Even when facing frustrations or tough moments, she uses these mantras to reset and keep her mindset focused on the next play.
Through her journey from watching the game as a kid to standing confidently in net for the Irish, Izzy has developed a strong mental game, which she credits to both visualization and positive self-talk. She emphasizes how goalies need to stay resilient and focus on the process, not the mistakes.
For younger goalies, Izzy's advice is clear: prioritize footwork, maintain a strong team mentality, and always remember why you play. Whether through gear preferences, self-talk, or keeping calm under pressure, Izzy’s approach offers valuable insights for goalies at all levels.

This week on the Lax Goalie Rat podcast, I am joined by the second Moore brother on the podcast, Patrick from the University of Johns Hopkins and Lynchburg Alumni.
While Pat may not be from the biggest hotbed for lacrosse and had what some to consider a "late start" into the sport he still had quite the impact getting named All-American his senior year of high school and team captain for his high schools state finalist team.
Patrick started playing at Division III Lynchburg getting 97:18 in goal with a 50% save rate but quickly rose to be one of the best Division III goalies in the NCAA with many impressive stats such as starting all 21 games, being ranked 20th in the whole nation for saves, then ultimately ending his senior year off with an impressive 67.9% save rate on the season.
After getting a degree in Exercise Physiology at Lynchburg he decided to start pursuing a master's in health care management at Johns Hopkins where he ended up playing in goal for them.
Awesome conversation with this brick wall where we discuss exercise science, life at Hopkins, how a Lax Goalie Rat post made him alter his stance, plus a ton more.

On this episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, I am joined by a redshirt sophomore attending the University of Maryland, JJ Suriano.
JJ Suriano came from arguably the biggest hotbed for lacrosse, Baltimore, Maryland. She attended Bryn Mawr School where she was a four-year varsity starter. She was 2021, 2022, and 2023 IAAM A-Conference All-Conference Team.
On September 1st of her Junior year, her phone was buzzing receiving multiple calls from college coaches. One college stuck out to her, Maryland.
She had a visit scheduled for the 8th of September. At that visit, she recalls it was everything she wanted academically, socially, and from lacrosse. She felt the team was very connected and close and knew she wanted to become a Terrapin.
She was advised by her college coaches not to commit so quickly, but she knew where her heart was set and committed to The University of Maryland on September 9th, 2021, and never looked back.

It's not often that a freshman goalkeeper earns the starting position on a team full of talent— but UAlbany's Landon Whitney shows the veterans how it's done.
With Whitney in the cage, the Danes ended the 2024 season with a winning record, securing the American East Conference Championship, and making it to the second round of the Division I NCAA Championship Tournament.
Hailing from the southern state of Georgia, Whitney isn't exactly from a lacrosse hotspot. Growing up in a large family, Whitney was well-versed in many sports, but eventually decided to focus on lacrosse. In this episode, Whitney discusses his transition into a northern-based boarding school, and how his decision to re-class helped him develop into a stronger athlete going into college.
Whitney shares his tips for "exuding confidence" as a young or experienced goalie, as well as his reasoning for his dramatic eyeblack, with roots back to middle school lacrosse.
A frequent attendee of Goaliesmith sessions, a training group of college-aged to middle school goalies, Whitney continues to grow his craft and shares how he learns from fellow goalies he is training alongside.
Whitney's dedication and appreciation for the sport go a long way, as he trains younger goalies while continuing to lead his team from in the crease. After an outstanding freshman year, I can't wait to see what this talented young man has in store for the future!

On this episode of the Lax Goalie Rat podcast, I am joined by young breakout goalie Giancarlo Munaretto.
Giancarlo Munaretto grew up playing hockey and didn't think too much about other sports.
That was until in 6th grade when he decided to pick up lacrosse as a secondary sport. He played mid-field for his first two years. This was until his team needed a goalie and he decided he would try out. He ended up thoroughly enjoying playing goalie and started taking it seriously at the beginning of his 8th-grade year. Now a sophomore in High-School Giancarlo plays club lacrosse for True Illinois.
He has received coaching from many amazing goalies such as: Anderson Moore, Goaliesmith, and some ex-collegiate goalies in his home town.
I had the pleasure of coaching Giancarlo in my 6 week coaching program and it was awesome to work with him to level up the goalie game.
Giancarlo is all about having an amazing attitude and mindset because he believes that is the key to winning games. He discusses how you always have to enjoy playing because you never know when it could end. As well as always having a positive attitude around your team because when they see the goalie down their attitudes will drop as well.
Giancarlo also is a big believer in mastering the basics of a position to become the best possible player you can be.
Enjoy this conversation with rising star Giancarlo Munaretto.

A couple episodes ago Florida goalie Elyse Finnelle kept raving about her goalie coach Arvak Marshall. Now we're lucky to be joined by the goalie coach himself.
Arvak was the Head Coach at Southern High School from 2006 to 2020 as well as an M&D goalie coach for over 20 years!
Marshall is also the Commissioner for SCYA Rec club in Anne Arundel County, MD.
While his time as a youth started a little late in 7th grade he played a little goalie but mostly played attack he didn't truly start his time as a goalie until his coaching days started and his kids needed someone to shoot on so he courageously jumped in cage with no fear.
Arvak says that part of the reason he was so comfortable in goal is because he would be hit by defenders so often when playing attack that the ball in goal wasn't much different which helped him get right into it.
With that stay tuned for this great conversation with this amazing goalie coach Arvak Marshall.
