This is Part 1 of my Reasonably Spontaneous Conversation with Sue Gordon.
Sue was the fifth Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) from August 2017 to August 2019. As PDDNI, Sue was a key advisor to the President and National Security Council and led the 17-member Intelligence Community.
With more than three decades of experience in the IC, Sue has served in a variety of leadership roles spanning numerous intelligence organizations and disciplines. Prior to the DNI, Sue served as the Deputy Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency from 2015 to 2017, helping the director lead the agency and manage the National System of Geospatial Intelligence.
Before joining the NGA, she served for 27 years at the Central Intelligence Agency, rising to senior executive positions in each of the Agency’s four directorates: operations, analysis, science and technology, and support.
In 1998, she designed and drove the formation of In-Q-Tel, a private, non-profit company whose primary purpose is to deliver innovative technology solutions for the agency and the IC. She is the recipient of numerous government and industry awards, including the Distinguished Intelligence Medal and the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award.
Sue earned a Bachelor of Science from Duke University. A trusted authority on strategy, innovation and leadership, Sue is currently a consultant on global risk, technology, cyber and space issues and a member of the Board at Pallas Advisors, a Washington D.C.-based consultancy

Erika Barker, a passionate explorer of the electronic world, began her journey into circuitry as a teenager and delved into programming before graduating high school in the late 90s. He still does several recording sessions a month, either at his studio or at other studios.

Constantine Nasr and I had a conversation in late Dec 2020 upon the release the 80th Anniversary of Bugs Bunny in a Limited Edition Boxed Set of 60 re-mastered shorts starring Bugs. Constantine produced a documentary that is included in Boxed Set with interviews with many of the animation masters who worked in the Warner Brothers Loony Tunes studio, including Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny. In 2008 American animator, screenwriter, producer and voice actor Penn Ward cast Polly in his Emmy Award winning cartoon series Adventure Time. She played a sexy little green elephant named Tree Trunk. To say the series was a smash hit is an understatement, launching Polly Lou into global pop stardom. An energy and spirit as that of Polly Lou’s will forever remain in the hearts of all that have known and loved her. She was a true Texas original and a very fine lady indeed.

Michael S. A. Graziano is a professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Princeton University. He is also a novelist, composer, and occasional ventriloquist. In addition to running a research lab and writing scientific papers, he is the author of five neuroscience books and has written for the Atlantic, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, and other mediaoutlets.
In his scientific work he has covered three main topics: how the brain reconstructs the space around the body, how we coordinate complex movements within that space, and most recently, the brain basis of consciousness. His current research is focused on how the social mechanisms in the brain may allow us to attribute the property of consciousness to ourselves and to others. In August of 2020, I had this 2nd conversation with Laurie Bell
Laurie Blalock Bell was first of six children in a strictly run military family. She moved 9 times and went to 7 schools before the age of 16. Over the course of her life thus far she has moved 31 times and has had over 42 paying jobs, ranging from serving in a navy mess hall to bartending in Amsterdam, singing and acting on radio and television, PR manager for a large hospital conglomerate, personal assistant to Luci Baines Johnson (LBJ and Ladybird’s daughter), program director for the chancellor of the Texas A&M University System and manager of her own health food store (that 40 years later is still in operation).
Laurie's spiritual quest and compassionate curiosity about life has always been the light guiding her through her eclectic life. Today, she loves taking care of her beautiful home, three cats and amazing husband, along with singing, drawing and reading, refinishing and creating decorative finishes on furniture, real estate staging and home redesign.
But, her special passion for over 25 years has been in providing comfort as a volunteer for Hospice. Laurie has given her love and support to countless numbers of individuals helping them find their path through the grieving and healing process. Laurie has raised two wonderfully creative and successful daughters who are both in the music and entertainment industry. She enjoys a very large and incredibly supportive community of friends in Austin, and playing with her husband Clay, whom she says is her role model and biggest fan. This podcast was one of my first in 2011 with the actor and activist Max Gail.
In 1979, Barney Miller was a major hit television series on ABC in the fourth year of its seven year run. Max Gail starred in the ensemble as Det. Stan “Wojo” Wojciehowicz.
I was in LA taking a shot a fame and fortune (missing the target high and to the left, but that’s another story). I had begun a teeny-tiny-talk show on the local cable access channel. I serendipitously ran into Max and he agreed to be a guest on the show, my first major celebrity. Afterwards, Max invited me to the set and introduced me to the cast and the creator, Danny Arnold, who also came on my show. Many other guests followed as a result of Max Gail’s appearance.
Max went on to perform in numerous films, television and on-stage, most notably on Broadway in “The Babe” which was later filmed and shown on PBS.
Max is a documentary film maker, actor, environmental and Native American activist and parent, not necessarily in that order. He remains, as always, a graceful, thoughtful and generous human being.
Our conversation will focus upon what Max calls LAP, his quest to create context for dialogue (rather than debate) on air, on-line and on the level.

Emma and I had this conversation on May 8, 2020.
Emma lives in a small intentional community in Oregon, milking dairy goats and a dairy cow and caring for chickens and a large organic garden in collaboration with other families of similar values. Emma is a licensed and certified Elementary School teacher with a B.A. in Psychology who has had years of experience teaching diverse students in public schools in Hawaii, California, and Oregon. She has two young children and many other diverse friends and children that she considers “chosen family” that take up quite a bit of her spare time. She is a master at canning and preserving and loves to cook large internationally inspired feasts for her community.
She is also a council member for her local health clinics, working hard to ensure that all patients receive quality health care regardless of their ability to pay. Emma is adamant about giving back to her community, whether it be through food, volunteer endeavors, ideas, planning and attending social gatherings and interactions, and sharing knowledge and research-based facts.
Emma created her YouTube channel in collaboration with her sister, Jean Klewitz, to help share her skills, trials, experiments and ideas she has learned through off-grid and farm life while also incorporating experiences in diverse international communities within city limits. She hopes to instill a love of homesteading skills with the global community, to create a more sustainable and socially intentional global community of neighbors regardless of their economic or cultural differences, whether her viewers live on a farm in the country or in an urban dwelling within a city.

Koen and I had this wide ranging and fascinating conversation on May 15, 2020.
Koen Bertels is the head of the Quantum Computer Architectures Lab. He currently focus on Quantum Computing and more specifically on the overall system design and architecture aspects.
He is a principal investigator in Qutech where he collaborates with experimental physicists on building prototype quantum processors. Koen’s research interests spanned two of the three research pillars of the Lab, namely Multi and Many-core architectures and Electronic System Level Design. He was responsible for the Delft Workbench project that aims to provide semi-automatic support for designing heterogeneous multicore platforms where reconfigurable technology offers plenty of possibilities to generate application specific hardware at runtime. An overview of relevant publications on various topics related to heterogeneous multicore computing can be found on his research page.
He also started two companies. The first, called BlueBee, was formed with colleagues from the CE lab and Wayne Luk from Imperial College, that provides a cloud service for genome sequencing. Bluebee received 10 Mio € venture capital in 2016. More information can be found on the the BlueBee website below. She is a 21-time Emmy Award winner for her work as an ABC News producer and executive producer of the documentary series Turning Point. As vice president at CBS News from 1998 to 2005, she oversaw 60 Minutes and 48 Hours.
She was executive producer of the MAKERS (AOL & PBS, 2012) documentary and digital series, the short documentary, The 4%: Film’s Gender Problem (Epix, 2016) and the feature documentary, The Lavender Scare (2017).

Ross MacPhee is a paleomammalogist on the curatorial staff of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where he has worked since 1988. He has conducted more than 50 expeditions in many parts of the world, researching the evolution and extinction of Ice Age mammals.

Dr. James Crowe is Director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center and the Ann Scott Carell Professor of Pediatrics, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt. His laboratory studies the human immune response to infection for a wide variety of major human pathogens, including many emerging infections.
Dr. Crowe is the Director of the HUMAN IMMUNOME PROJECT, an ambitious effort to identify the sequence of all transcripts for human adaptive immune receptors. His research group uses a very broad array of techniques including molecular and cellular biology, state-of-the-art imaging and flow cytometry, bioinformatics, and bioengineering approaches to attack scientific problems at the forefront of immunity research. The group has been recognized widely as a leader in antibody sciences, for instance as the Best Academic Research Team, 11th Annual Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards, World Vaccine Congress, recipient of the 2019 Merck Future Insight Prize for Pandemic Preparedness, and large-scale research grants and contracts from NIH and DoD, including the DARPA Pandemic Prevention Program (P3).

Mike P. Burton grew up in North Carolina and Delaware, listening to George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, and Steven Wright. He moved to New York after college with a Theatre Arts degree in hand. He did some off-off-off Broadway shows while waiting tables and bartending but comedy was always something he wanted to do but never followed through with so one day he woke up and decided to stop talking about it and actually do it. That night he went to an open-mic paid $5 for five minutes of stage time and he’s been doing it ever since.
Mike has done plays, a music video, a variety show “The Fringe”, some independent films and a couple of commercials. He was the regular warm-up for daytime talk shows The Revolution and Bethenny while also subbing in at Rachel Ray, The View and Dr.Oz
He travels all over doing stand-up from Maine to New Mexico to Florida and the exotic Dakota’s as well as working on cruises all over the sea. Recently, Mike taped a Drybar comedy special which can be found on Drybarcomedy.com. It has been said that he has the southern roots to make him hospitable and enough New York in him to give him an edge.

Sara MacSorley started her career as a super cool science major with a degree in marine biology. Working in science education and outreach led her to pursue a graduate degree in business, which led to a new role as the director of a community-based program bringing arts and science to children and educators. It was at this special place where she got the idea to create a story and coloring book celebrating today's dynamic women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The first Super Cool Scientists book was an amazing collaborative adventure. Soon, Sara mapped out a plan for a second volume, spotlighting another 22 women in STEM called, Super Cool Scientists #2, but also authoring a chapter in 20 Beautiful Women Vol. 6, consulting as a book editor, and serving as a job sourcing recruiter. Today, Sara has found her way into the marketing department of an online education company, working as a full-time writer.

And it’s all old news, my friend. For over six years now, I’ve been more free and happy and creative and loving than ever before. Without ‘positive thinking’, without constantly working on myself. It’s all truly effortless, relaxed, natural.

Adam Frank is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Rochester as well as a popular science writer. He is the co-founder of NPR's 13.7 Cosmos and Culture Blog. He also does regular on-air commentaries for All Things Considered and has two books on science culture published (the last one for Simon & Schuster).
Professor Frank received his Ph.D. in Physics (1992) from University of Washington. He held postdoctoral and visiting scientist positions at Leiden University and the University of Minnesota. In 1995, he was awarded a Hubble Fellowship. He joined the University as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy in 1996. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000 and to Professor in 2004. He received a University Bridging Fellowship in 2005.
Prof. Frank's research is in the general area of Theoretical Astrophysics, and in particular the hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic evolution of matter ejected from stars. Current research topic include jets from Young Stellar Objects, bipolar outflows from evolved stars such as Planetary Nebulae and Massive stars. Investigations are carried out though the use of large scale numerical simulations.

Clifford Johnson April 16 2020. Professor Clifford V. Johnson’s work in science ranges from teaching and research into black holes, particle physics, string theory, and cosmology, to public outreach where he strives to put science back into the general culture. He helps artists, writers, and filmmakers incorporate science into their work, and appears on several TV and online shows.
He has been a science adviser for many TV shows and movies, including Nat Geo’s Genius (featuring Einstein), Marvel’s Agent Carter, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame, and more. Johnson also recently wrote and illustrated a graphic novel featuring science called "The Dialogues: Conversations about the Nature of the Universe" (MIT Press), selected as one of Science Friday’s Best books of the year - two years in succession!
