The story of Ghanaian dancehall begins with the rise of reggae music in the late 1970s. Inspired by the powerful voices of Jamaican icons like Bob Marley (Bob Marley's wife, Rita Marley, has spent more than 20 years residing in Ghana. In the 1990s, she relocated to Ghana with Bob Marley's family ) and Peter Tosh, Ghanaians found a deep resonance with reggae, seeing parallels between the Jamaican experience and their own history of colonialism and struggle. The local Rastafarian communities played a pivotal role in nurturing this bond, and soon, youth from the Zongos began to champion this emerging genre. Much like in Jamaica, these young artists expressed their socio-cultural challenges and political dissent through their music.

Abeejah O’Mint, better known as Jupitar or Jupitar General, has swiftly ascended as a standout in the spheres of Reggae, Dancehall, and Afrobeats within Ghana. Emerging in 2011, Jupitar has left an indelible mark on Africa's dancehall canvas, characterized by his genuine tunes and mesmerizing performances. His initial breakout track, "Nah Touch Again" in 2010, catapulted him into the spotlight, prompting many to marvel at his distinctly African origin.

2013 was a rewarding year for him; he clinched the "Discovery of the Year" titles at both the Reggae/Dancehall BASS Awards and the MTN 4Syte Music Video Awards. By 2017, he garnered a nomination at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, enthralling fans with a riveting live band show. Between 2015-16, his hit single "Enemies," featuring Sarkodie, resonated not just within Ghana but also far beyond its borders. This achievement led him to several nominations and eventually a win for "Best Collaboration of the Year" at the Ghana Music Awards UK (GMAUK).

Jupitar's collaboration with one of Nigeria's dancehall heavyweights, PatoRanking, on "Whine" garnered vast online attention. In 2017, he clinched the title of Best African Artist at the Urban Music Awards U.K, competing with notable names like Wizkid, Mr. Eazi, and Tiwa Savage, among others. 2018 saw him being recognized as the top Dancehall act at the NELAs Award in the U.K., outshining peers like Shatta Wale and Burna Boy. He's also marked as a performer for JA Sting 2023.

This was a great interview! Ghana to THE WORLD!

When Alex Wagner (aka ASW or ‘A Single Wave’) was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2013, he leaned into self-discovery and began volunteering for Crisis Text Line so as to help others facing similar struggles. His newest concept EP, ‘Dahlia’ (which dropped via Popgang Records in August) turns his visceral life experiences into sonic art, and has been the basis for a fundraising series that has raised thousands of dollars for the same national nonprofit. The collection is filled with deep vocals, steady percussion, and soothing progressive house beats that may bring peace to weary listeners. ‘Soil And The Seed,’ the EP’s third single, is an especially cathartic listen with a deeply personal message.“‘Soil And The Seed’ is the acceptance of life as a flawed, uncomfortable, dark, beautiful ride. This acceptance heightens us. Makes us present,” ASW explains. “I wrote ‘Soil And The Seed’ about those who hide from this truth, fear it, but eventually let go, embrace it.” It’s safe to say the experimental queer artist and mental health advocate has accomplished just that, with thoughtful melodies that effectively free the soul. #creativehustleshow #creativehustle #hustleshow►FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/Dubaidenismaronga►TWITTER: https://twitter.com/Dubaidenismamba►YOUTUBE: https://youtube.com/@dubaidenismamba►INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/kicheko_project►LINKTREE: https://linktr.ee/DubaiDenis►WEBSITE: https://kichekoproject.com--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theafricanexcellistpodcast/messageSupport this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theafricanexcellistpodcast/support

Hey everyone,

Get ready for a mind-opening episode of our podcast as we dive into the fascinating world of African spirituality. The topic of today's discussion is "African Spirituality: Unveiling the Mysteries and Misconceptions."

Have you ever wondered about the existence of a spiritual realm before the physical world? Well, our guest speakers have some intriguing insights to share. They explore the concept of a beginning before the beginning, highlighting the belief that spirit came before physical existence. They also shed light on the evidence of ancestral worship found in Egypt, which aligns with stories in the Bible.

But that's not all! African spirituality sees humans as spiritual beings first and foremost. They discuss how death is not the end but a transition into a different realm. Funeral celebrations in Africa are seen as a way for the spirit to make its journey back to the spiritual realm. Our speakers also address the misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding African spirituality, explaining that rituals and sacrifices are a way to provide energy or fuel for the spiritual realm.

Now, here's a thought-provoking question: Has Christianity replaced African spirituality? Our speakers challenge this notion, arguing that African spirits and practices are still alive and powerful. They criticize the idea that forgiveness can be obtained simply by confessing sins in church, contrasting it with the longer process of forgiveness in African spirituality. As one of our guests wisely said, "Forgiveness is a journey, not a destination."

African spirituality is a holistic concept that stemmed from the historical, cultural and religious heritage of Africa, and includes among others, folktales, beliefs, rituals and culture. African spiritualities must be understood as originated from Africa's soil, but also developed through contact with people from other countries and continents. The African independent or indigenous churches play an important role in the establishing of African Christian spiritualities. This episode distinguishes and gives attention to the influence of African traditional spiritual phenomena as well as a 'globalized Africa spiritual' phenomenon on African families.

The power of community and connection ripples into powerful, positive impact.  For #WomensHistoryMonth, I want to highlight some amazing women I have worked & collaborated with over the years . Generally, books are important in the lives of children. Like their bodies, the minds of children are growing rapidly, and books are a great source of imaginative nourishment. Books delight their sense of adventure, feed their curiosity, nurture a positive self-image while instilling valuable lessons about life. Shout out to my guests at the village today , @ellenore_angelidis & her daughter !! Y’all are incredible! You not only adopted your beautiful daughter from Ethiopia but have started Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund to bring Education to #ethiopia ! Many children can get education because of the books you’re organization donates to rural parts of Ethiopia all in their own languages!! Beautiful to see your daughter has written 8 children books and giving back to Ethiopia in special way!   We chopped up about "Jeber", the first children's comic book featuring an Ethiopian superhero, published a few days .  www. ellenoreangelidis.com--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/support

How can we help people to live a good life? Instead of trying to right what's wrong within a community Elijah and Ali argue we need to start with what's strong. We need to help people discover what gifts they have and to use those gifts to enrich those around them.  On this series, we peel back the professional and corporate facades of our leaders, allowing us to tell the personal stories of people who work hard to lead communities and businesses every day. Many countries in Africa have poor reputations when it comes to LGBT rights. The  Commissioner / council man Andrew Ikechukwu Ashiofu breaks down  this uniformly gloomy view  and also highlights the ways in which sexual and gender minorities are marginalised by , Immigration , Washington African Community , religious and traditional leaders .  Of the 69 countries that criminalize same-sex relations, 33 are in Africa.  In most cases, these laws are remnants of colonial rule, and the vague wording of these prohibitions, such as “carnal knowledge against the order of nature” resonate with the decorum of that era.  Andrew Ikechukwu Ashiofu has with fellow LGBTQ+ Nigerians in establishing human rights advocacy and asylum aid for LGBTQ+ Immigrants seeking help. The music industry is nowhere near reaching gender parity. Women are still missing in the music industry, especially behind the scenes. Industry solutions must do more than offer lip service to creating change . Women of color in particular have made strides on the artist front — making up over half of the female artists in 2021, as well as outpacing white women as songwriters. But only one woman of color was credited as a producer in 2021.

How y'all feeling about this? Let’s discuss…

When I asked a few of our favorite listeners to tell me about their most memorable (in a good way) dates, they pretty much described a chick flick come to life. Prepare to be swept off your feet and inspired to never go on a blind date again!

The annual Northwest Folklife Festival is a community-powered celebration of the arts, culture, and heritage that make up the brilliant cultural tapestry of the greater Pacific Northwest. Prior to 2020, over 6,000 artists and culture-bearers brought cultural expressions to audiences across 25 stages alongside 200 food and craft vendors and 500 volunteers annually. Today we honor those who lost their lives while serving and protecting our country. They made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our freedoms and we owe them our deepest gratitude. We also honor those who lost loved ones who served. #MemorialDay2022

Sex is an integral part of the human experience. And for far too long, the topic has been clouded in stigma, shame, and judgment. Sex negativity is taught in abstinence- and fear-based school sex education programs. It’s preached by religious leaders and instilled by many parents. It’s in the shows and movies we watch and policies our governments pass. And it’s harmful at every level. TAEP aims to change that . Sex Positivity is the idea that people should have space to embody, explore, and learn about their sexuality and gender without judgment or shame. It involves being nonjudgmental and respectful regarding the diversity of sexuality and gender expressions, as long as there is consent. On this episode we explore with  openness and a nonjudgmental approach, sex positivity embraces the diversity of sexual expression in BIPOC and Immigrant communities . Tap in.

We live in a world where everyone is offended by something. It could be the color of a person’s hair, the way they hold a spoon, the tone of their voice, or it could also be because of something they saw on social media — everyone has something they’re sensitive about, and when they come across it, they get upset. You know the story, you make an innocent comment about something you have noticed or something your friend, partner or a work colleague has done and the next thing you know, they have taken umbrage at what you said. They are quietly saying, how dare you pass comment on their choice of partner, shoes, haircut, decision or work project ! delete That shit, that’s inappropriate!

On this podcast, I will discuss Why people are easily offended and 12 signs that you are easily Offended .

‘Money can do so much, but actually it’s about trust and connection and relationships between people.’Stigmata Tenga In recent years, Africa has had to deal with the effects of the pandemic, growing inequality, and the threat of climate change. In addition, individual African countries have faced their own challenges. How has African philanthropy coped with these problems and what shape should it take to deal with those that lie ahead? Philanthropy  for-and by - Africans has played a significant role in the lives of many through charitable donations, funding businesses and stop gap public good provisions. But can it be more? The traditional model of philanthropy needs to evolve in order to ensure it fulfils its own potential as a catalyst for growth, and best serves the needs of those it is intended to support. On today's show , I narrate a piece by DAVID ELIKWU about how we as a society contribute to  Charity Fraud in the facade of Philanthropy .

On today’s s topic, we debrief our fans about the Will Smith and Chris Rock incident at the Oscars .  To recap: whereas presenting the Best Documentary Feature award, comic Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s spouse, Jada Pinkett Smith, being bald, making a reference to the 1997 Demi Moore movie G.I. Jane. (Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia, a situation that causes sudden hair loss.) While Pinkett Smith seemed visibly uncomfortable by the joke, nobody was so irate as Will Smith, who instantly leapt from his seat, jumped onstage and slapped a clearly shocked Rock within the face. In unedited variations of the published, Smith, who was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard, could possibly be heard shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”Will Smith’s Oscar slap reveals fault lines as he defends Jada Pinkett Smith against Chris Rock!  The fiasco took the  attention away from the rest of the event. In what became one of the most infamous moments in the history of the Oscars, Smith got out of his seat to slap Rock for a bad joke aimed at Jada Pinkett Smith. Chris Rock said he had been 'bullied ridiculously' as a child, quote , 'Half of the bullying was because I was just a little guy. Then I got bused to school and the bullying was because I was [a] little guy and I was Black. I was getting double bullied.' Here are my 14 takes from this incident.  Love over hate.  TAEP is launched Weekly on all audio streaming platforms, together with Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Stitcher or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

The One Vibe African Dinner Experiences is an opportunity for community members to gain deeper exposure and insights to the culture, food, and topics that come from and inform Africa and the African diaspora. With the recent effects of COVID, many people are eager to get out and connect with others. People were disconnected from connecting with others. Their mental health was challenged as a result. The first problem the dinner series solves is creating an experience for people to connect in community while healing in community. Opportunities for conversation over dinner is an experience that creates a sense of belonging. Domestic violence, to many, is an issue of men harming women or attempting to have power over women. This has statistically proven true in numerous studies and police reports, however domestic violence is not unique to one gender. Attention given to domestic violence has typically been “males harming females” and in a great deal of domestic violence publications, words for women are used interchangeably for “victim.” The debate is ongoing whether domestic abuse incurred by men should be given the same attention as that caused by men. Gender stereotypes create unfair stressors for men coming forward for support.

The general consensus seems to be that male-on-female domestic violence is more likely to result in serious injury or death, whereas female-on-male is more likely to result in male suicide. #domesticviolence #dv #VAWA #domesticviolenceagainstmen #Relationships #suicide #society

When it comes to divorce and child custody cases, husbands and dads face unique challenges. The preconception that children should always remain with the mother after the divorce is changing. If you want custody of your children, it takes time, energy, and effort. There’s a great deal of work involved. You have to draft and file legal documents, support your claims, and present your case.  I understand how hard it is transitioning out of a relationship, and having to deal with the harsh reality that your spouse can & will move on. But weaponizing children is NEVER the answer & is not in the child’s best interest. Washington State placed an increased weight on keeping both parents involved in a child’s life after divorce or separation. This is great news for fathers. On this episode features an in-depth discussion on specific issues that affect men going through the divorce process. We discuss 10 Fathers rights and answer some custody questions and chime in on  Tristons $47K child support case.  Our guest music  feature is from  Kenya, Afrobeat superstart ,Savara - Sababisha . Intimate partner violence (IPV) is one of the most common and dangerous forms of violence against women . I have repeatedly asked myself questions: Why don’t the victims speak earlier? Why didn’t they the first time something happened? Why didn’t they go to someone in a position of authority over the various individuals who misused, abused, and assaulted them? On this episode, I had the pleasure of Interviewing a relationship expert, Ms. Canada World Finalist , Malissa Veroni . She is a professional registered social worker (MSW, RSW) and owns her own business. She serves many people in Grande Prairie 🇨🇦and the Peace Region . There’s another against-all-odds love story, but this time, the lovers are far less interesting and charismatic than Akeem and Lisa (Shari Headley). March is Women's History Month – Meet Nansare Consolata , a Ugandan 🇺🇬 born, Black woman entrepreneur, the founder of African Print Takeover, a cultural awareness organization established in 2016, formally known as Best of Both Worlds Production, founded in 2005. Nansare currently sits on the board of the Washington State Coalition of African Community Leaders and is a Cultural Ambassador for Umoja Festival. Dissatisfied with the lack of cultural events in the Greater Seattle African community, Nansare, a Ugandan native, took the Mahatma Gandhi quote“You must be the change you wish to see”, and she applied it. As a student at Highline Community College, she was an active leader in the Black Student Union, where she was inspired to actively participate in and give back to her community. Did you know Nansare resided in Kenya 🇰🇪 before relocating to the US? Her first platform was at the annual Umoja Festival & African American Day Parade in 2005; the show was a success and was covered by the Seattle Times Newspaper the following year. In addition to her community activism, Nansare has produced many fashion shows for various events in the greater Seattle metropolitan area: Seattle Central Spring Bling, Festival Sundiata, Mwangaza Jitegemee Foundation, Igbo day Celebration, Madaraka Festival, Spirit of Africa formally known as Spirit of West Africa, Her Big Day cultural wedding show, local community colleges and universities, and many more. Nansare is a fashion stylist who believes we are not all born the same; our differences make us unique. Her vision is for people to walk away from her cultural awareness fashion shows with a greater understanding of the African culture and the influence it has on Western styles. She hopes her audience will also walk away with new ideas on how to integrate traditional African clothes into their wardrobe and gain an increased consciousness of how and what clothes communicate values, identity and culture. Valentine's Day elicits a variety of responses: joy, glee, bliss, and even annoyance. The feel-good day for lovers is also a mainstay for florists and chocolatiers. It is a brutal time to be single — even before Valentine’s Day showed up. The spontaneous whimsy of a regular dating life has been replaced by rolling restrictions, questionable adherence to social-distance protocols and a whole new meaning to “getting tested.” And if you have been in a relationship throughout the past year, you may be wondering if you would even still be together if you weren’t quarantining together. So whether your love life is on life support or you haven’t been touched in way too long, this episode will warm your spirit. My guest today, Vinita Puri, is a Social Worker based in 🇨🇦 , a Coach and Consultant by profession and Model/Actress and Pageant Queen on the side, breaks down the 4 main types of love. It goes without saying that the love you feel for a friend, family member, or romantic partner are all distinctly different things. Hello people , especially my friends with kids! Why such unusual, complicated names? Is who you are and who you turn out to be, related to what you are called when you are born? My friend Nanie Meme 🇳🇬 🇱🇷 recently launched a children’s book called, 𝐌𝐲 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞; its about the beauty & diversity of names; inspired by her mom and their 16 years separation at birth. I interviewed her a month ago to soak in more about the story behind this quintessential project. An African inspired adventure children’s book that follows a 1st generation young girl as she time-travels across states, countries & continents in search of the origin and meaning of her name. Tune in family and stay safe, this snowmageddon is furious this year ❄️. Pre-Order today: http://kck.st/38HJtf3

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is here (thanks, Cupid). There’s no time like the present to pick out a Valentine's Day gift for your partner. If you haven’t had a lot of luck finding the perfect gift for your S.O. in the past, you already know this holiday can feel pretty damn nerve-wracking. It truly is a special kind of pain to see a gift you bought the special person in your life (whether you’ve been dating for years or interning for an entanglement. Buying a gift for a man can be a challenging ordeal if you don’t know the ropes. Although most men are simple, buying a gift for them can be a whole different ball game. Most of you love to gift your man something nice every once in a while. But it’s easy for you to feel perplexed about what to get him. Keep in mind that what you get and the way you present it says a lot about how much you value the man. So, you have to be careful about what to get him. Hopefully, this episode will help you decide what things you can absolutely can’t get him.

It's time to celebrate, beautiful Black people! Black History Month is upon us and it's only right that we honor all of the figures who've come before us to make our lives today better, as well as show love to those continuing the fight in order for tomorrow to shine even brighter for people of color. Every single day of the year, black people who strive to make improvements in their communities and push Black people forward should be acknowledged. If we aren't the ones who do it, then no one will. So, it's important that we honor our own and thank them for making our lives more fair, as well as appreciate them for making us as a people feel more powerful. Do you know black history as well as you may believe? African American past  is so rich -- centuries long, in fact. So, it's practically impossible to know every single thing about our history. However, it's always fun to learn more facts about us as a people. I hope this episode gives you some laughs and some value.

Doesn’t it seem like the best ideas come to us during our “alone time?” It’s when we’re visiting a museum exhibit, listening to a music album, or going on a long hike, that inspiration strikes. But, acting on that newfound inspiration often requires something else: Isolation. Taking a hiatus helps me to get motivated, recharge my spirit, boost my mood, and help me get better. On this episode, I explore self-development through the filter of current events, pop culture, and experience. I hope this episode gives you Value people.
