In our 17th talk, we continue the line of inquiry pertaining to last weeks topic of understanding the self-developmental aspect of philosophy. In this talk we acknowledge today’s understanding of philosophy which is more involved with solving puzzles then living a good life. We acknowledge the ancient use of philosophy; a disciplinary system that governs decision-making to revere, honor and contribute to life, which brings us to the question pertaining to the origin of philosophy; human wonder. It just so happened that ancient Egypt & the Middle East developed a practical relationship with the wonder they had for the human experience. This practice eventually became an ethos that governed the life of man on a personal, societal & governmental level. We talk about much more. Again & most importantly we are indebted to Algis Uždavinys, the great prolific Lithuanian philosopher, writer and scholar for his labors of bridging the gap between ancient wisdom & contemporary thinking. The seeds he planted have grown into something profoundly beautiful, pioneering a synthesization of Egyptian, Greek, Sufi, Semitic & esoteric thought. Tune in & let us know your thoughts. Gratias Tibi ago!

Welcome to our 13th episode where we discuss different sources of self-development. Self-development, being applicable to all walks of life regardless of creed & doctrine or absence thereof, needs a source that people can go to in order to understand it. We believe classic literature, being those pieces of writings that have been judged to be supreme across land & language barriers, is one of the best origins of self-development. The classics have lasted the test of time because they have heartfelt effects on the readers. Each of those pieces of literature contain the central theme of leaving ones comfort zone and journeying out to the unknown as a means for the pursuit of the good. Moreover, the classics teach moral and ethical lessons. Essentially, they teach us virtue. Self-development falls under the topic of ethics. It is concerned with the cultivation and improvement of human behavior & because literature usually provides a teaching function of morality, literature then becomes a viable source one can use to understand self-development. This very claim that, 'Classic Literature can be used as a source to help us understand & develop strong ethical character' is derived from Cicero's orations in the year 62 BC where he defends a poet who is accused of not being a Roman citizen. In the passage, he references ancient wisdom & literature as ways to go about contemplating & developing virtue. We are constantly surrounded by the beautiful literature of the ages, all of which we can read not only for enjoyment but to aid us in our understanding of morality & ethics. -The Words Liberate
Welcome to The Words Liberate. In our 12th talk, we discuss the moral and ethical messages buried within the mythological story of Bacchus. The use of mythologies for self-development is nothing new. Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Lord Chancellor of England, a philosopher, statement, creator of the scientific method, wrote extensively on mythologies. He too was ravished with the wisdom of antiquity and it is from some of his writings along with other 19th & 20th century writers like George Bulfinch, Manly Hall, & Jospeh Campbell, that we learn that mythologies are filled with ethical and moral messages. Since The Words Liberate is dedicated to the practice of self-development which is an ethical system and because these topics begin in the ancient past, we travel to the times long ago in order to acquire the knowledge we need. We hope our findings can aid the listener in understanding a little bit more about self-development. Gratias tibi Ago!
