Today we had a special guest speaker Pastor David Wigington to share God's Word with us!
In chapter three Ruth makes a bold move and a moment of tension is created. The moment pushes the issue of marriage and it leaves open the questions of, "What will Boaz do and how will he respond?" We will find in Boaz's response to Ruth the beauty of true love unveiled. We will see from the words and actions of Boaz a love that reflects the love of God, and beckons us to step into it and reflect it as well.
In Ruth chapter two we are introduced to the characters in this love story as Ruth meets Boaz. What we will find is far different from the modern love stories and romance novels that pack today's shelves. Instead, we will see the beauty of true love, not lust, begin to be put on display. We will see a love that is characterized by sacrifice and care for the other person. We will also see how we have received this love from God, and how as his followers, we can be His love and care revealed to the world.
The words from the mouth of Ruth in chapter one still stand as some of the most beautiful, poetic, and powerful words of what love looks like and what it does. Her faithfulness and dedication to Naomi extended far past just this human relationship, as she also placed her life, her identity, and her future into the hands of the God of Israel. It is in this declaration of love and in this leaving of her past that we will find hope starts to emerge where nothing but chaos had reigned!
The beauty of the book of Ruth is not only in the greatness of the love revealed, but also the setting in which it takes place. Light is more precious when it invades the deepest darkness, and the truest of love is held to more tightly when our circumstances seem to scream nothing but darkness and hopelessness. For us to properly understand the book of Ruth, we must first grasp the absolute shattered expectations of Ruth’s family. Only from this understanding does the beauty of God’s love revealed shine more brightly from their story!
The Holy Habit of generosity is one of vital importance, but also one that many struggle to implement. We will uncover how greed and selfishness have a way of blinding us from the needs of others, and at the same time stealing from us God-given opportunity. We will see how followers of Jesus are commanded to be generous, and how this generosity is actually a blessing. The act of giving has incredible power to remind us of what is important, to open our eyes to God at work, to be a blessing, and to grow us spiritually while at the same time growing the kingdom.
Martin Luther once said, "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." The Holy Habit of prayer is the means by which we talk to God, and it is this vital communication that the enemy longs to disrupt and stop more than anything. In this message we will uncover why prayer sometimes feels so difficult, what prayer is, and the incredible power behind a consistent, intentional, Holy Habit of prayer.
Time spent in the word of God is one of the most powerful Holy Habits that we can take part in. God's word is powerful to change us and should be the basis for all we think, do, and believe. We will see how the word of God acts like a mirror that reveals God, reveals our heart, and shows us how they differ, and that time in God's word gives us the power to know, the power to grow, and the power to fight.
Out of all the Holy Habits, fasting often is one of the most neglected by followers of Christ, which is a tragedy because both power and reward are hidden behind this habit. In this message we will take time to look at what fasting is, why it is important, reasons to fast, and how this Holy Habit grows us. This will be an extremely practical message that will challenge us to make this a habit we engage in throughout the year.
Holy Habits (spiritual disciplines) are designed to help us grow in our walk with Christ as they are avenues for us to worship God. Worship is the heart's intent behind every Holy Habit, and we will see that what we tap into at the heart level is what we worship. In Psalms 1, we find a picture of the life that has firmly rooted itself in the Word, and in worship of God, and discover how we should model our own after that pursuit!
What we do matters, and what we do consistently over time naturally changes us. In our series, "Holy Habits" we will take a look at the spiritual disciplines, and see how these habits have the power to grow us in our walk with Christ. This week we will see from the life of Daniel how the habit of spending consistent and intentional time with God prepares and empowers us for the toughest choices we may ever face.
As every year comes to a close and the new year approaches, we are given the opportunity take stock of who we are, where we have been, and who we are becoming. This is a great question to consider as we look internally and ask, "who or what is molding us?" The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God is the potter and we are the clay, and the ancient king David compels us to ask God to search and refine us. Our prayer for the close of 2020 is that we would be people that allow God to shape and mold us to reveal beauty to a broken world!
Today we bring our series, "Yearning" to a conclusion and see how every heart longs to encounter and be transformed by the glory of God. The shepherds out on the hillside who received the Angelic message, encountered the glory of God and were then sent to find and see the fullness of God's glory revealed in Jesus. We will see that in Christ the glory of God meets mankind, and that in hearts that are yearning for Him, God's glory radically changes lives and alters stories!
