In this solo episode, I discuss the important distinction between the concepts of grieving and mourning. Grief refers to the internal emotions and personal journey one experiences after a loss or major life transition. Mourning describes the external, communal expressions and rituals related to grief.

Key topics covered:

  • Common misuse of "grieving" and "mourning" as interchangeable terms
  • Grieving as the inner emotions of sadness, anger, etc. that occur involuntarily after a loss
  • Mourning as outward rituals/practices that people can choose to participate in to express their grief
  • Examples of mourning rituals based on religion or culture
  • Other mourning practices: journaling, support groups, listening to meaningful songs, reading old letters
  • How both grieving and mourning help us adapt to change and loss over time
  • Reflection questions: What mourning practices are helpful for you? How do you see grieving and mourning show up in your life?

I offer an open invitation to share any reflections on this topic with me via email. Understanding the difference between these two related concepts can aid in processing any losses we experience.

If you or anyone you know is looking to have someone walk alongside them during ther grief journey, contact me for a Discovery call.

Budde weaves stories from her own life, religious texts, the Civil Rights movement, literature, pop culture, and current events to illustrate what goes into "being brave." The decisive moments—some flashy, some subtle—that make up the arc of a lifetime include deciding to stay, deciding to go, deciding to start, accepting what we cannot change, and more.https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/705987/how-we-learn-to-be-brave-by-mariann-edgar-budde/Contact Kendra Rinaldi to be a guest on the podcast:https://www.griefgratitudeandthegrayinbetween.com/

Julie Gilmer, Event Curator with Sendoff, works alongside Kelly Roberts, Sendoff founder with over 15 years experience in the funeral industry.More about Julie Gilmer in her own words: “I have experienced grief in several ways. Both of my grandparents, whom I was very close to, passed away. Both my stepfather & my former boss/dear friend husband passed unexpectedly from heart attacks with whom were very special to me. I mention these deaths, because all four of them I was a part of planning their funerals, and not one of them was done traditionally in funeral homes. That just didn't speak to who they were. So, we choose themes...baseball and Superman for example, venues, food and unique touches that felt like them. That helped so much with the grieving process and brought comfort to us all. They were colorful celebrations, and not dark and sad services. When I stumbled on this new company, Sendoff that is reimagining funerals, I felt a strong calling to reach out and see how I could be of service. As an experienced event coordinator, I knew there wasn't a funeral service provider that can plan celebration memorials other than at a funeral home. If you want something other than that, you have to figure it out on your own. After learning about Sendoff, I knew it was something innovative, creative and inspiring that will help people have whatever kind of memorial they want. Not taking away from tradition at all. It's simply about having options. Greif is going to be there, there is no doubt, but if we can take time to laugh, and embrace the good moments in life, comfort is found.”https://www.sendoff.co/https://www.facebook.com/sendoffmn/https://www.instagram.com/sendoffmn/https://twitter.com/Sendoffmnhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/sendoffmn/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxqNWRacpoStECnSv0AKbzgContact Kendra Rinaldi to be a guest or for coaching: https://www.griefgratitudeandthegrayinbetween.com/

Stuart Sax shares the following about himself: “My love for broadcast radio began when I was growing up in Chicagoland. One of my favorite radio hosts was Harry Porterfield, who did a regular feature about people in the city. This short segment stayed with me as I grew up and, after realizing a career in live theater was not my calling, I studied broadcasting at Indiana University in the mid-60s. While in college, I was an integral part of the I.U. Student Radio Network. Those were the days of spinning records live and reading the news and lists of where to attend protest rallies. My favorite disc at the time was the extended version of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” by Iron Butterfly because it ran about 10 minutes. This allowed me enough time to get to the bathroom and back or to take a quick nap. I played that tune at least once every two hours! After college, my radio career was put on hold because I had to report for military duty. While serving in Vietnam, I set up a “pirate” radio station in my battalion to play music, deliver the news and read letters from the troops. If this sounds familiar, it’s because I was doing what Adrian Cronauer did, only Cronauer was immortalized in the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam" starring Robin Williams.Upon returning home, my broadcasting dreams took a backseat to a career in the women’s fashion retail arena, which was my family‘s business. That was until I retired and moved to Frisco, Texas, to be close to my grandson. Here I met Mark Wariner, the station owner and producer of KVGI radio. I approached Wariner to offer my services to write and record commercials; instead, Wariner, hearing my baritone voice, asked if I would be interested in hosting my own program.Having waited for more than 50 years for an offer like that, I jumped at the chance and said that I would like to do a show called "Someone You Should Know." I then started a second show "Something To Talk About." Later, I brought in DFW Networking Diva Christine Deane as my new producer and I added the new talk shows “Trash Talk” with humorist Brandon Novara and “Opposite Saxes” with my wife Lauren.Who knew that you could have this much fun in retirement??”https://www.stuartsax.com/Contact Kendra Rinaldi to be a guest or for coaching: https://www.griefgratitudeandthegrayinbetween.com

In this episode I share the audio clip of a FB live I did just a week after my mom died of Pancreatic Cancer. In it I share a few takeaways that I thought may be valuable for someone who is recently experiencing grief as well as for someone who is supporting someone who is grieving. •The grieving process of a sudden death vs the grieving process of a death by an illness. My sister died in a car accident in 1996 and my mom died 9 months after being diagnosed from Pancreatic Cancer in 2016.•How our believes about life after death can play a part in our grief journey. •What to say when someone is grieving.•Don’t judge your grief or the grief of others. Everyone’s process is unique.Contact Kendra Rinaldi to be a guest on the podcast or for coaching:https://www.griefgratittudeandthegrayinbetween.com

Melissa Bollea Rowe is a published author, professional songwriter of 20-plus years, and founder and CEO of the music publishing and artist development company Rhyme Partners, which she started in 2013. Her latest publication is her book, "God, Gratitude, & Giving," which was released in May. In the book, she shares the role these three words have played in her life story as well as how prioritizing gratitude and faith has gotten her to where she is now as an entrepreneur, a creative, and a person. She lost both of her parents as a child and has had a hard road to success, and she's passionate about sharing her story in hopes of empowering and inspiring others.

Melissa Bollea Rowe made her way to Nashville, Tennessee more than 15 years ago to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a professional Songwriter. Mission accomplished. She’s a self-taught guitar and piano player who doesn’t take one day for granted. She’s had songs cut by the famed Nine Days Band and well-known country music artists like Jimmy Charles, Karen Waldrup, Allie Colleen, American Blonde, Brecken Miles, Mary Sarah and many more. “Every step of the way has been organic and blessed. Hard work, timing and preparation have led me to some pretty spectacular opportunities. I feel like I’m always at the start of something fun and exciting!” says Melissa. Melissa not only writes and performs for a living, she also mentors, educates and works with corporations and organizations like; Musicians On Call, The Beat Of Life and GAB, Generations Against Bullying. So, it was a natural fit when she was hired to oversee the creation of all the music for Speak Life To End Bullying, The Musical performed in over 1,000 schools and theaters nationwide. “Of all the songs I have written that have been released to the world, creating the music for this musical has truly been one of my greatest honors,” says Melissa.

In 2013 she founded Rhyme Partners Music Publishing on Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee. Aside from her own success as Songwriter, Rhyme Partners’ catalog includes hundreds of cuts on both independent and record label artists with millions of combined streams across all digital platforms. Their songs have been recognized, nominated for, and won several independent and major music awards. Rhyme Partners’ songs have reached chart topping spins on Music Row’s Country Break Out Chart, Americana, and Blues charts, and have celebrated the number one spot on four Christian radio charts with the release of “Grateful” in 2019 recorded by artist Chris Golden, son of the Legendary William Lee Golden of The Oak Ridge Boys. Rhyme Partners’ catalog has also seen success with national brands and sync placements for television and film. Melissa is passionate about sharing her stories of life, success, heartache, and restoration with audiences all over the world. She recently celebrated becoming a best-selling author as part of the anthologies Everyday Woman’s Guide To Doing What You Love (Chapter 33 The Day I Cried In The Meadow) and Everyday Woman’s Guide to Success In Your Business (Chapter 3 RelationSHIPS). Caitlin Billings knows the struggles of balancing work, mental health, and motherhood better than most – while accepting her own bipolar diagnosis, she had to learn how best to support her gender-fluid child, who inherited depressive behaviors, as well as pursue an allegation of child sexual assault in their home.

In her work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and role as a mother, she felt tremendous pressure to be perfect and present stability. Though she overcame abandonment issues and an eating disorder in college, a hold-up at gunpoint broke her carefully balanced world apart, forcing her to seek help. Now Caitlin is speaking out about the deep-set need for perfection throughout society, especially on teens and mental health professionals, until people understand that your best is good enough and you are never alone.

Please let me know if I can connect you with Caitlin! I'd love to set up an interview or send you an advance copy of her memoir, In Our Blood (July 2022).

Part coming-of-age, part reckoning of motherhood, In Our Blood is a therapist’s honest account of professional and personal struggles and an intergenerational story of acceptance, self-love and fluidity.

In this solo episode I talk about an incident that occured in my grief journey recently... that made me re live the emotions I had felt when I had a miscarriage 16 years ago.

Grief does not knock on our door and tell us, "Hey, I'm about to walk in! Beware!" Nope... it just kicks the door opened unannounced and slams you to the floor. Grief is sneaky!! It creeps up on you unexpectedly.

Steve Leder is the senior rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles. After receiving his degree in writing and graduating cum laude from Northwestern University, and spending time studying at Trinity College, Oxford University, Leder received a master’s degree in Hebrew letters in 1986 and rabbinical ordination in 1987 from Hebrew Union College. He is the author of five books: The Extraordinary Nature of Ordinary Things, More Money Than God: Living a Rich Life Without Losing Your Soul, and the bestsellers More Beautiful Than Before: How Suffering Transforms Us, and The Beauty of What Remains.

Synopsis:

Writing an ethical will, a document that includes stories and reflections about your past, is an ancient tradition. It can include joy and regrets, and ultimately becomes both a way to remember a loved one who is gone and a primer on how to live a better, happier life. Beloved Rabbi Steve Leder has helped thousands of people to write their own ethical wills, and in this intimate book helps us write our own.

Because our culture privileges the material over the spiritual, we sometimes forget that our words carry greater value than any physical thing we can bequeath to our loved ones. Rabbi Leder provides all the right questions and prompts, including: What was your most painful regret and how can your loved ones avoid repeating it? When was a time you led with your heart instead of your head? What did you learn from your biggest failure?

Including examples of ethical wills from a broad range of voices—old and young, with and without children, famous and unknown—For You When I Am Gone inspires readers to examine their own lives and turn them into something beautiful and meaningful for generations to come.

After helping care for her grandmother who had vascular dementia, Jennifer realized her Mother was showing signs of early onset Alzheimer’s. After the death of her father in 2017 Jennifer went searching for answers to many of the common questions and Alzheimer’s caregiver faces. Being a busy entrepreneur Jennifer realized that a podcast would be the easiest way to learn more about caregiving while completing other tasks.

Sadly, in late 2017 she only found one and it didn’t quite address what she was looking for, so she did the next best thing, and started her own. The Fading Memories podcast is now in it’s fourth year and despite the death of her Mom in March 2020, Jennifer is still talking to caregivers and still learning how to be an excellent caregiver. He vivido, y sigo viviendo, mi proceso personal. Y en él he descubierto mi llamado de acompañar a personas que desafortunadamente atraviesan este dolor de perder lo que mas aman. Ser para ellas una compañía que las abraza y las escucha para transitar este desierto del dolor; para recordarles que aunque hoy duela, esto también pasará."

That is the day Stephanie's journey of deep grief started.

Stephanie hopes the skills she learned to help heal her own grief can help others. The 52 affirmations in each of her books offer new ways of looking at old problems. Her quirky humor, varied life experiences and interesting perspectives will gift you with new perspectives and skills to deal with your own deep grief.

In this converstaion with Mark Poehner (Marco), we cover a few topics such as his experience as a foreigner growing up in Colombia during a time of inmense violence . We also talk about his family dynamics and upbringing and his approach to parenting. We talk as well as his passion to reforestation and conservation of endagered forest species in Colombia. And how everything in life is intricately interconnected.

Here is more about him in his own words:

"It wasn’t until I was in my 50s and read Third Culture Kids, by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken, that I understood how growing up in Colombia and going to Colegio Bolívar molded my identity and social adaptation. Like many other CB students and alumni, I am a hybrid of two or more cultures, having entered Colombia at age 5, in January 1961. It was a bewildering introduction to a society at war with itself, with extremes and contrasts between wealth and poverty, ethnic diversity, natural beauty and abundance and the ugliness of the Violencia.

My father, who had been born to missionary parents in Pereira, Caldas (1926, prior to the secession of Risaralda), also felt “called” to minister to the poor and downtrodden, so he ventured into the most remote regions, jungles and marginalized neighborhoods, where the refugees settled; and he took me with him. I formed deep bonds with the forests and pueblos of Colombia. I became a “grincolombiano” or “grindio.”

On my 17th birthday I left home, Colegio Bolívar and Colombia, to make it on my own. Borrowing my airfare, I went to the USA, where I began working as a farm laborer, a dock worker, and even a janitor at my high school, to subsist. It took four years to afford college, where I felt out of place socially. I worked a few years as a journalist, then turned to teaching, first adults, then children.

In my early 30s, in a crisis of identity, I returned to Colombia to explore my national affinity. Teaching some wonderful 4th grade classes at CB, from 1988 to 1991, I realized that I was both Colombian and USAmerican, and that it was my choice to embrace both.

During that time I was offered an abandoned farm in upper Pance, above the town and the end of the road. I bought it in February 1989, borrowing from my retirement account. I devoted it to reforestation with native species, and to the conservation of endangered forest species. I learned the hard way, that the idealism of “self-sustained” farms takes 26-hr. workdays; so I kept the project going on my meager teacher budget.

Dealing with the violence of my upbringing (frequent fighting in my neighborhood, ongoing disturbances in the countryside and the city), I pursued a different approach to relationships and communication. After marrying and becoming a father, I was given a mentor in “Effective Communication and Relationship Building.” I studied under Selwa Saíd for 17 years, learning how to teach and raise children without coercion, punishment or yelling, and to listen to the intent and desire of others in conflict. I thoroughly changed my approach to teaching and parenting.

Now retired, I live between my two countries, between Cali and Central Coast California. Between forestry and surfing. As a hermit in the Farallones de Cali and as a dad on the Monterey Peninsula. As many other CB alumni, I’m a hybrid, a bridge builder, and hopefully a resource for a more peaceful and healthy future."

Sue Egan lost her brother to suicide six years ago. As she sat in a therapist's office a year later she began to pick up the pieces of her belief system and learned how to live with his suicide.

"I felt no one could possibly understand what it was like. I felt so alone in my grief, and had memories that would flash back of events I never thought would happen in my life.

There had been no warning signs, no suicide note or explanations. I have spent the last six years on my own journey of making meaning of my brother's death and working out how I can live with suicide as a part of my new life story.

Through my own psychotherapy, EMDR therapy and finding the strength to research sucide bereavement within my doctoratal research and hosting a podcast about suicide loss, I have healed as much as I can. By speaking to many others bereaved through suicide, I have found a safe place to talk - to share what seems to be unthinkable thoughts and to hear stories from those who 'just get it.'

I have learnt that we often have to rebuild not only our own lives but how we feel about our lost loved one.

I may never be fully healed or be able to fully accept my brother's suicide, but I am in a stronger position than I ever have been. So although life will never be the same again, it is the best it will ever be - knowing I cannot rewind time and stop my brother doing what he felt he had to."

Sue is a psychotherapist and a final year doctoral psychology student and is devoted to providing a safe therapeutic space for others who need to rebuild their lives after a sucide loss.

Sue is a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Todavia me cuesta describirlo y la verdad todavia no he vuelto a mi estado “normal”. "

Corchele Smith is the founder of a non profit, called Because of Breklyn. It’s mission is to help families who have experienced or will experience pregnancy, infant and child loss by giving them an unstuffed bear.

In May 2016 her daughter, Breklyn, unexpectedly passed away 10hrs after birth. During that very difficult time they were given and un-stuffed Bear. Their Brek-Bear has helped to bring comfort and healing through the log grief journey. Since then they have been providing Bears to families.

During our conversation, Corchele shares about her grief journey, and how she would hide her grief by pretending to be ok on the outside.. That led to a deep depression which she also hid and eventually turned to a point in my life where I was suicidal. Once she hit rock bottom and finally reached out for help is when she started truly experiencing, processing and coping with her grief and all the emotions that come with that. She did this by journaling, finding gratitude everyday, meditating, doing random acts of kindness but most importantly allowing herself to feel the deep dark feelings and also the highest and brightest feelings as well. Her own experience, has led her to now want to help others their grief journey as well.

An entrepreneur, author, public speaker, athlete, and philanthropist, David Richman uses the lessons learned in his life to enrich and inspire others. As a former sedentary, over-weight, smoker, David knew that he needed to focus not on what others wanted out of him, but on what he wanted out of life. With his first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, David discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. Now, David shares the interconnected stories of others overcoming obstacles—specifically cancer—in his second book Cycle of Lives. Cycle of Lives was created as the result of many years of dedication to raising awareness and funds for cancer research and care. David first started to form the idea in 2007, after his sister was in the last few weeks of her battle with brain cancer. David made a commitment to his sister before her passing— he would run 24 hours and raise money to support the fight of others. Over the last 15 years, David completed several more events: 24-hour runs, an 87-mile run from Cancun to Tulum in the heat of a Mexican summer, a 104-mile run along the Pacific Coast Highway, long bike rides, and various other endurance events. Hundreds of people have supported and joined David in these events, and together, they have raised tens of thousands of dollars along the way for exceptional organizations like the American Cancer Society and Moffitt Cancer Center. In the spirit of continual support, David is donating the profits from book sales to the various cancer-related charities featured in Cycle of Lives.

Nickcole Byrd, author of The Widow’s Oil, Discovering God’s Purpose in the midst of Grief, shares her journey after the death of her husband in 2019. In this conversation she shares her experiences and insights of what she's learned from this grief experience.

She sees that a lot of Christians struggle with grieving and are afraid to speak up about it because they are supposed to be people of Faith. Many pass on therapy because they are taught they should pray about the hurt they are experiencing. She shares how therapy has played a part in her and her family's journey, and wants people to know that there is strength in reaching out for help. In her words "I have made it a commitment to distill all stigmas about emotional health amongst the black and faith communities .My message of hope is the method of faith and therapy are a perfect combination in healing and moving forward."

Spirit Vessel was created in 2019 by the sister team of Founder and CEO, Jessica Wertz and Co-Founder, Amanda Wertz McClellan.

Spirit Vessel was conceived in 2018 when Jessica was working in her ceramic studio in Oregon. Recognizing how her connection with grief became a great catalyst in her own life she was inspired to create a healing and empowering impact on others lives during some of our most challenging times. After sharing this vision with her sister, Amanda, the company was formed.

We live more full and conscious lives by having the ability to address the most important aspect of our life - our death.

Through restoring the use of intimate ceremony around death, Spirit Vessel creates a guideline for meaningful connection through interaction.

Spirit Vessel carries the understanding that by acknowledging what hurts we can then allow it to heal. When we can grieve, we honor who and what we love.

The Spirit Vessel studio is located in southwest New Mexico, nestled in the hills of the Gila National Forest. Each urn is handmade and mindfully crafted with love.

Jessica Wertz - CEO and Founder: As an artist, adventurer and visionary Jessica has spent more than a decade as a self-employed ceramic artist living in seven different states. After establishing her career in the San Francisco Bay Area, she moved to the deep woods of Oregon to build a studio where she spent years living in the wilderness. During this time she had deeper conversation and insight around living consciously and creating from that space.

Her work in ceramics has always been a journey into finding the meaningful connections in our lives and what nourishes us. Her work transitioned with her intention to create a space that allows us to feel the complexities of our lives, find ease in the discomfort of grief, and reconnect to ourselves with a deep acceptance. Jessica feels a deep sense of curiosity for the journey of the soul and how we weave our love in this world and into the next.

Amanda Wertz McClellan - Co-Founder: As a passion driven business woman and proud working mom, Amanda’s desire to create positive impact has always been her north star. Over the last ten years her professional life has ranged from sales and marketing in technology to health and wellness companies. Each role has enabled her to develop rewarding skills, offered new challenges and opportunities to grow.

As proud as she is of her professional career, nothing compares to the joy of raising her two daughters alongside her husband. Their youngest was born with a very rare and life-threatening genetic breathing syndrome which alters how the family lives. As a result of her daughter’s diagnosis and care, her family is frequently confronted with the line between life and death. Living so close to the possibility of loss has given Amanda a profound perspective into what truly matters in life.

Dr. Joshua Black is a grief researcher, speaker, author, consultant, online course instructor, and host of the Grief Dreams Podcast. He has focused all of his MA and PhD research (in psychology) on investigating grief dreams and continuing bonds from many types of loss (including prenatal loss and pet loss). Most of his academic research and publications have specifically been on dreams of the deceased. Dr. Black is considered one of the leading academic experts in dreams after loss (also known as Grief Dreams). Due to the lack of academic research in this field, Dr. Black has focused his efforts on raising awareness on grief dreams through doing talks, interviews, and developing an online Grief Dreams course. Additionally, he developed a grief dreams website (http://www.griefdreams.ca) and runs several social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @griefdreams).

On this episode I chat with Katrina Weller. After experiencing the death of her mum at age 15, followed by the loss of four more relatives and her newborn nephew within a six year timeframe, Katrina became increasingly aware of the lack of conversation, discomfort and misunderstanding towards grief and loss. She became a voice of advocacy within her own respective network and decided to extend this voice further through facilitation and workshops. Katrina now hosts the podcast "Grow with Grief" and is on a mission to make the uncomfortable, comfortable through conversation and storytelling.

Romy Devack started SINCERELY after working in the fashion industry for over a decade, as an expert consultant across celebrity and retail. When her father, Stephen Devack, passed away after a sudden bout with cancer in September 2014, she planned to tattoo his signature on her body as a way to honor his memory and keep a part of him with her at all times. Her mother, however, quickly shot down that idea with a fervent, maternal, “NO! No way!” and suggested a symbolic piece of jewelry instead. Romy struggled to find the perfect everyday piece to honor her father, combing the available options in the market before turning to the idea of designing her own. For her mother’s birthday in February 2015, she asked a family friend to turn her late father’s signature into a diamond necklace so that the one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry could be worn close to her heart. Romy’s mother was overcome by the gift; it was both meaningful and beautiful. In the weeks that followed, her mother Joy was stopped constantly and asked about the unique piece. When she explained its origins, they loved the story behind it as much as the striking necklace itself. A flurry of interest followed as friends, family, and strangers began asking if they could order their own personalized piece, organically sparking a business pursuit. In January 2016, Romy realized her dream of creating a jewelry line that fuses design and meaning. The personalized pieces are unique and beautiful, but the sentiment behind them – of keeping a loved one close to your heart and with you at all times – is equally as important to the intention of the company. SINCERELY was born as a tribute to one man, and carries on as treasured light for thousands of others.

Andy McCall is an international Self-Published Author of the book "Pigtails and Steel", which can be found on Amazon. He is an Elementary School teacher as well as a High School Football coach. But the most important role he has in life, is being a dad and a devoted husband.

In this podcast we talk about his first born, Penelope Clair, she is his Why! Penelope was the light of his life. She had many different special needs, from Polymicrogyria, seizures, Schintzel Gideon Syndrome, and ultimately cancer, but that did not define her. Those were just parts of her that they went up against every day. Her cancer diagnosis was Stage 4 medulloepithelioma, a very rare, super aggressive brain tumor at the base of her brain. The tumor metastasized down her spinal column causing lower body paralysis and finally took over her body. During her life we did many things including helping pass the CBD legalization bill in Tennessee and spread awareness for Epilepsy and St. Jude.

In his own words " I didn’t cope very well with Penelope’s cancer diagnosis and initially after she died. I decided to write down my feelings because it was hard to communicate those and I didn’t feel like there was anyone I could actually talk to. I did this in a blog, shared some here and there, and then published it as a book. Pigtails comes from the hairstyle that Ellen did with Sweet P that was my favorite. I got Steel from how strong us Dads are supposed to be. I hear a quote one time that always stuck with me, No matter how strong steel is, even it becomes moldable and able to change when the elements are right."

Andy is now a Member of the Quality of Life Steering Council- St. Jude uses parents as part of the decision making process as end of life and bereavement situations arise and are carried out by the hospital. And also Bereavement Director with the Sunday Morning meetings that other bereaved Dads join in and discuss different topics from daily life to harder questions we all have to face. We have fathers from Chicago area, Tennessee, Florida, and The Netherlands.

Faith Fuller Wilcox believes that self-expression through writing leads to healing. Her writing is reflective of a growing body of medical research about “narrative identity,” which illuminates that how we make sense of what happens to us and the meaning we give to experiences beyond our control directly impact our physical and psychological outcomes. Faith learned these truths firsthand when her thirteen-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer that took her life. Faith’s journey from grief and despair to moments of comfort and peace taught her life-affirming lessons, which she shares today through her writing. Faith is the author of Hope Is A Bright Star: A Mother’s Memoir of Love, Loss, and Learning to Live Again that was published in June 2021. Faith is also the author of Facing Into The Wind: A Mother’s Healing After the Death of Her Child, a book of poetry.

A longtime resident of Massachusetts, Faith leads a journal writing program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children for patients and their families designed to give participants the opportunity to express themselves, alleviate stress, celebrate victories, and honor their grief.

Neil D. Beresin is a counselor and interfaith chaplain, and specializes in helping individuals navigate the unstable and disorienting waters of grief and loss. Neil has worked with individuals and families in hospitals, hospice, nursing homes, schools, and private practice. Multiple lenses frame his practice, including the work of theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel, Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön, psychologists Francis Weller and Murray Bowen, Founding Director of the Zen Hospice Project, Frank Ostaseski, and the practice of mindfulness through poetry.

Neil sees deep listening and reverent attentiveness as a spiritual practice. He meets individuals where they are and focuses on helping them increase their ability to cope with what are often extraordinary circumstances. It may include assisting individuals to connect or reconnect to practices, people, and principles that matter most to them. Neil may use poetry to provide additional comfort, deepen the space, and encourage reflection and opening. His article, “A Chaplain’s Notebook: Poetry as Spiritual Nourishment” was published by the Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling in March of 2020.

Neil’s clients are often experiencing overwhelming heartache related to loss—on the tailwinds of divorce, the death of someone dear, or, from some other life-altering struggle. Others have been carrying loss and trauma for many years, and they suddenly experience an acute form of anxiety or anguish that pushes them to seek more effective strategies to cope with and relieve some suffering.

Olivia shares her grief journey after the death of both her parents. Her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when Olivia was only 15. She was on remission for a few years and then it came back again when Olivia was living out of the country for college. She would travel back and forth from Munich to Rome, to take care of her mom when she was sick. Her mom died of cancer a few years after her diagnosis, that same year her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor the same year and died 2 years later.

Olivia’s parents were divorced, so the only person that truly had experienced the same losses as she had, was her brother. Olivia saw early on how different everyone grieves, even within the same family. She went to therapy in order have the support she needed, and to hear that what she was feeling was normal. She started her Instagram account @thebiggrief shortly after her dad died as a way to process her grief by sharing poems that she has written to express her grief.

Abigail Johnston is a daughter, mother, wife, and attorney who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in June of 2017, close on the heels of a early stage diagnosis in March of 2017. In reality, the breast cancer had already spread to Abigail's bones before she felt the lump in her breast. The first few months after her diagnosis were a whirlwind and full of many profound changes, but Abigail soon found her footing and started her blog "No Half Measures," where she talks about whatever comes to mind, within the lens of her Stage IV diagnosis. Abigail's boys, Liam and Malcolm, who were nearly 2 and nearly 4 at the time of her diagnosis, along with her husband, Elliot, make their own appearances in Abigail's advocacy since it truly is a family affair. In 2017, Abigail discovered that she inherited the ATM mutation and further testing has revealed other somatic mutations; this is now her focus of research and she bugs her doctors regularly with articles and new information.

For Abigail, advocacy is a whole life endeavor and she never does anything halfway. Abigail works with Metavivor as a Peer to Peer Advocate, with Living Beyond Breast Cancer as a Hear My Voice Advocate, with After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD) and she started her own non-profit, Connect IV Legal Services, to recruit attorneys to do pro bono legal work for Stage IV metastatic breast cancer patients. Abigail is an active member of her local support group, Y2B2 which is geared towards younger women with all kinds of cancer and is a co-administrator of a metastatic breast cancer community, Living Metastatic One Day at a Time, where she helps to organize the "Sister Buddy" program so that no member feels isolated or alone. Outside of cancer advocacy, Abigail serves as a room mom for her boys' teachers and is a board member of her local PTA, serving as a Parliamentarian.

Just by reading this bio you can see that Abigail is a remarkable woman. When you listen to this podcast you will feel inspired to live a more meaningful life as well as to redefine what success means to you.

Rachel Engstrom M.S.W., C.H.E.S has written a groundbreaking memoir/self-book on her experience as a young cancer wife then widow. With the increasing number of young women and men becoming widows/widowers due to not only cancer and serious illnesses, but also now Covid 19, this resource is needed more now than ever. Rachel shares her journey in a raw and honest way, while providing step by step resources to help you navigate your own journey. Never before has there been a combination of the personal grit of the healthcare journey, along with steps on how to navigate treatment, diagnosis, the ins and outs of hospital life, employment, finances, insurance, self care, grief and loss and much more.

In this interview, Rachel shares how her husband was 35 when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. On their 8th wedding anniversary, just a year and a half after his diagnosis, he was admitted to the hospital again. He had lots of treatments including bone marrow transplant. Then 2 days after Rachel’s 31st birthday, she had to hold him as he was taken off life support.

She also shares about how she had endometriosis, and just 6 months after her husband’s passing, she had to undergo surgery. Now, not only was she grieving the death of her husband, but also the idea of ever being able to birth a child.

Part of her grief journey was writing a blog about her process and then this became a way to help others. She also joined the Leukemia Society Team and Training, where she trained to run a half marathon to raise funds towards this organization. This became one of her biggest outlets as well as her support group with people that could relate to what she was going through. Currently she is running for the Woman of The Year for the state of Minnesota to raise money for the Leukemia Society.

Born in Cali, Colombia, Carolina Ravassa has appeared on The Affair opposite Dominic West, Mr. Robot with Bobby Cannavale & Rami Malek, and has done a few shorts with Reggie Watts. She produced, directed, and starred in the webseries Hispanglosaxon, which won an Imagen Award for Best Webseries. She is known for her voice work in the video games Overwatch (Sombra), Valorant (Raze), Grand Theft Auto V (Taliana Martinez), Max Payne III, Red Dead Redemption II, Just Cause 4 and voices on Big City Greens (Disney), Victor and Valentino (Cartoon Network), Loud House (Nickelodeon) and Netflix. She also worked on Step Up 3-D and Maybe Tomorrow.

In this podcast Carolina and I chat about her personal life, more specifically about the end of a ten year relationship at the same time as her character of Sombra, of Overwatch, was becoming very well known. Going to comic cons, being with fans and surrounded with outpouring of love and support, was a dichotomy to her emotional life at that time.

We talk about how people overlook "breakups" and think you "should move on" from them and not see that a breakup is just as hard as a divorce. There are so many layers of grief in breakups that are overlooked in society at times.

Linzi Meaden lost her only sibling, Stuart, to suicide in June 2020. Totally unexpected and totally devastating for those left behind. To help with her grief, she has written a book “What Suicide Left Behind” due to be published on Amazon in May 2021, just shortly after their side by side birthdays, 28 & 29 April.

She has also created an online community for those grieving the loss of loved ones to suicide called “Paradisium” (which literally means “go into paradise”). The name came about because Stuart’s final online profile picture was changed to ‘escape to paradise’ on the day he went missing and Linzi finds solace in this, knowing he has reached his intended destination of peace. Paradisium offers online and offline activities to help with self healing such as art therapy, choir, writing, vlogs and live talks.

Linzi is using her new found voice to speak up about grief and suicide, especially to end the stigma surrounding this. She does this through her social media pages and website.

Susan Kendal became a widow, 6 years ago. Her husband passed suddenly of an unexpected heart attack while getting ready for work. Grief does occur in different times and 6 weeks after she and her husband got married, at 18 and 21, her best friend & brother-in-law died. So, their kids actually grew up their entire lives knowing about death. Which she feels it was probably good in retrospect.

She also shares her grief experience a few years after she became a widow when her dad succumbed to cancer and heart disease and both her brothers died as well.

She initially started Evolve for Widows to be a positive site for women who want to move forward. But, as she continued her involvement in the community (including coaching training), she's realized the biggest problem for anyone moving thru grief is the death taboo. Those grieving are talking about death but no one else is!! We hide in chat groups talking about our pain and loneliness because society has taught us to be afraid of speaking out because grief has a time limit.

So now she's trying to change that and open up the dialogue about DEATH as we have done for other taboo subjects like mental health, gay rights, infertility etc. She believes a dialogue that starts with children is ideal but we all must learn what NOT to say to someone who is grieving and how to hold space for someone who feels compelled to mention a loved one and lean in to death. We shall all lose a loved one in our lifetime (actually probably more like 5 loved ones) so this is THE most important taboo to end.

Listen to this podcast as we dive into the topic of how Talking About Death Helps Normalize Grief.

Victoria Moore became a widow in May 2019, after losing her husband Marcus to suicide. She never expected to be a widow at 37 and raise her 7 and 9 year old children on her own. Grieving the death of her husband was hard, but even harder was telling the children that their dad had died. In that moment she had to make a decision; Her children had lost their dad to suicide and she could not let them lose their mom to grief, so she had to set an example of how to grieve in a healthy way. She made a decision to turn her pain into purpose, and help others who were going through a similar journey. By harnessing her extensive background in yoga, mindfulness, NLP, Hypnotherapy, and an array of other mind/body modalities, she has turned her pain into a purpose by educating others on the importance of living happier and healthier.

Kathryn Monaco-Douglas shares her journey of when she became a widow over 20 years ago when her husband Larry died, they had been married for over 19 years and had 3 kids. She had to learn how to do things on her own, because Larry used to take care of everything and was also the financial provider.

Kathryn started searching for bereavement groups, and found very few options for support. That is where she met Scott, her husband, who was a widower. After attending a few bereavement groups, she realized she could not listen to everyone's journey and take "their losses on top of hers". So she decided she would change it! A few years later, she launched Widowed Not Alone, an organization to help widows, widowers and their families have a place where they could come together and have support.

Megan Hillukka is a bereaved mother, with 6 children, 5 who are still here. She was 36 weeks pregnant when her daughter Aria, who was 15 months old, died in her sleep. She also experienced PTSD from finding her daughter Aria when she died, and has done the work to find healing in her brain and her life. From this, Megan wants everyone to know that PTSD is not a life sentence, and that healing is possible. Megan encourages and supports grieving mothers that though the worst thing has happened to them, their life is not over

In our conversation we talk about how they explained to their children that their sister had passed away, and making sure they used the best words possible to share, so that the kids themselves would not have fear around falling asleep. We also talk about the mix of emotions as she was saying goodbye to one child and just a few weeks later welcoming their new baby.

Through her experience of the death of her daughter Megan has learned tools and ways of shifting grief so that it can become just a little bit lighter, and easier to live with. Because Megan has done the deep work of grief, made space for her grief and time for her grief, she now has room for joy, laughter, hope, and so much fun in her life. She will never forget her daughter Aria and they talk about her often as a family. She helps her clients carry their grief instead of suffering with grief, and to truly learn how to walk side by side with both grief and joy.

Andrea Freemyer, PhD- Self Love Coach, Body Connection Guide , and Breathwork Facilitator. Deeply committed to helping people walk through their shadows and alchemize their pain so that they can embody their light and reclaim their power. She is a self-love coach, body connection guide and Breathwork facilitator.

In her own words “I spent many years of my life as a high-functioning perfectionist and over-achiever. I went through some very painful experiences and did everything I could to avoid feeling through those things. I threw myself into getting an advanced education. I numbed with drugs and alcohol. On the outside, it appeared I was doing all the “right” things, but I was hurting deeply inside. My waking moments were spent in the chaos of my thoughts with my ego as the star of the show. Many people that I loved dearly were also stuck in despair and suffering. Then on September 16th of 2019, the very foundation of my life crumbled when I discovered my husband had taken his own life in our garage. I didn’t know how I would get through this- each minute, hour and day brought new challenges that I never expected I would face in a lifetime. My heart was literally ripped wide open, leaving me raw and exposed to my new reality. At a time that I could have easily averted back to my old ways of numbing and avoiding, I made the decision to keep my heart open and allow myself to feel through the pain of this trauma and loss. About a month after my husband’s death, Breathwork- an amazingly effective healing modality- found me right where I was when I needed it most. I embraced this work and made it a part of my daily practice. I walked through some of my darkest moments while also developing a deep connection with my body and began to regain self-trust. I felt called to journey much deeper. So, a few months later I decided to become trained as a Breathwork facilitator and I also enrolled in a 10-month 400-hour coaching certification. I wanted to share these amazing gifts with the world! Now I am grateful everyday to be guided by my soul’s calling to help people walk through their shadows and alchemize their pain so they can embody their light and step into their power.”

Listen to the podcast as we talk about all the tools she has used in her own grief journey as well as used them to help her young son as well.

Farin Schlussel is the Assistant Director of Marketing for Avery Books and TarcherPerigee, two nonfiction publishing imprints at Penguin Publishing Group (a division of Penguin Random House, LLC). She loves helping readers find the new book that will change their lives and help them think differently.

She shares her grief journey after her father, who she had not spoken to in over 10 years, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in 2016. We talk about how she felt this loss acutely even though she hadn’t spoken to him in along time, but also worried about how others were going to view her and judge her grief. Her Jewish traditions she observed for 11 months, was one of the most powerful tools in her grief journey.

Her dog Hershey was also a huge part of her support in her grief journey, he was her companion for 12 years and passed away in 2019. We talk about her grief process after he passed as well as when she found her new dog Penny, who came to her life and helped heal heart. Penny was part of this interview too, as she sat on Farin’s lap throughout our conversation to comfort her.

Farin also shares about her friends who were so understanding and supportive during her mourning period. They stepped up, and curved their lives to help her not be a alone during the 11 months while she was mourning and following the Jewish tradition of aveilut. She does not know what she would have done without them there. Her younger sister, who also lived nearby, was also a big part of her support system because they had a mostly shared experience.

Those 11 months of aveilut helped her come to terms that she did not regret not having a relationship with her father and also that she had a right to grieve as well, because she had a loss, and she could grieve that loss no matter what people thought about her.

Dave received his Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2011 from Pepperdine University, he has been a licensed therapist since 2017. He then worked in community mental health with adults battling homelessness and prolonged substance use. Dave worked with adolescents in residential treatment focusing on substance use and major mental health disorders from 2014-2019. In 2019 he founded Grammer Family Therapy. Dave believes therapy is a process that should be goal oriented, focused on solving the problems the individual is facing, and can be on and off depending on the needs of the individual. Dave has dedicated his life to service of others in many different forms. He lived in Africa for a year doing volunteer service between high school and college. He co-organized a free open mic night in Los Angeles for several years and has assisted in provided food and clothing to the homeless. Dave has been heavily involved in the capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, community in Los Angeles. He has been training for 10 years and teaching for the last 7 years, Dave has taught students from 2yrs old up to 80yrs old.

In our conversation we talk about his grief process after the death of his mother to cancer, as well as how his mom helped him navigate his grief, many years earlier, after the death of his best friend by not letting him stop his life and continue going to school just days after he passed. When Dave’s mother died years later, he did exactly the same thing, he kept his life going. His mantra in life is “when these awful things happen you can’t stop!” Now this does not mean that we don’t grieve, we grieve but we still have to keep moving forward with our grief. Another topic we talk about is about the importance of having an emotional vocabulary. How this emotional vocabulary has played a part not only as a therapist, but also as his role as a father.

Saundra Heimark started 2020 with incredible news that she had been hired to work for Kobe Bryant’s production company! Just the day before she was going to go in for her first day of work, was the day Kobe Bryant died tragically.

Saundra shares how she navigated her journey of finding work again, and then losing it once the lockdowns started due to Covid 19. During this waiting period she decided to study Facial Reflexology, and also stumbled upon a health and wellness product that resonated with her at soul level and started an online business with this company. She started to market organically using her phone and social media and then she got hacked, bank account withdraws, purchases made, and then she could no longer get into her social media accounts either because her phone number had been compromised.

Then in July, she faced yet the hardest grief! Her mom was given a few days to live from ovarian cancer she had been already battling for over 3 years. Saundra was able to fly across country to spend every single day with her mom. She could see the blessing of not having a job to report to during this time, in order to give her the freedom to give her mom all the care she needed, and to be by her side when she passed away.

Amidst all these experiences, she maintains a grateful attitude, not much different than the attitude her mom had about life. Her mom’s legacy continues to live on.

Rabbi Steve Leder- is the senior rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles. After receiving his degree in writing and graduating cum laude from Northwestern University, and spending time studying at Trinity College, Oxford University, Leder received a master's degree in Hebrew letters in 1986 and rabbinical ordination in 1987 from Hebrew Union College.

He is the author of several books: The Extraordinary Nature of Ordinary Things, More Money Than God: Living a Rich Life Without Losing Your Soul, the bestseller More Beautiful Than Before: How Suffering Transforms Us, and his most recent book, The Beauty of What Remains: How our greatest Fear Becomes our Greatest gift.

In this podcast, Rabbi Leder shares with us about why he wrote his latest book, and how, in over 30 years of sitting with thousands of families experiencing grief, he was not prepared for the loss of his own father.

He has learned so much about grief since his dad’s recent death, primarily how much death teaches us about life. The purpose of writing this book was to “bring every reader to that one extra degree, to the deepest truths, of what death comes to teach us about life.” The book explores the tension between Steve Leder the Rabbi, and Steve Leder the son.

Cristela Fowler shares her incredible journey with us. Her love story of how she met her husband Dave, as well as her grief journey of when he died from cancer. She became a widow and single mom to their son Noah, who was still a toddler.

She worked really hard to make sure she didn't lose herself in her grief and would lose the essence of who she was. It was already a tragedy that Noah would grow up without ever knowing his father, and she was not going to make that worst by not letting him get to know her true essence outside of her grief. She didn't focus on the "why me" mentality, but rather "why NOT me". There was a reason she went through all this grief, and she grew from it.

Her journey of motherhood and resilience, also turned to be one of finding love once again! She is now married to her husband Will, and they have a large blended family. Listen to her beautiful story of love, grief, resilience, family and hope!

Bobbi Jo Heagy is a Certified Life Coach, she helps women tap into who they are. She helps them see the gifts that they have acquired by having gone through their own struggles and tap into their worth.

We talk about her own hardships, including being sexually abused as a child, and how this occurrence made her label herself as “bad” and not see her own worth. She had no idea who she was and thought there was something wrong with her, so she looked up every disorder, every disease because she was trying to “fix herself”. Until one day she sent a message to her sister and told her she was going to start believing what God said about her, since He created her. She started looking at what was right with her. This took her on a journey of personal growth and development and was determined to not have a victim mentality.

Listen to this interview and be not only inspired by her story of resilience and growth, but also listen to the many tips she gives us as how we can find freedom in forgiveness, starting by forgiving ourselves.

In this conversation with Shelby Forsythia she shares about the “four years of hell’ that she and her family lived through, which in hindsight she is grateful for because it’s allowed her to understand others who experience grief.

They faced many different types of grief, one thing right after another, as if they could not catch a break! It all started when her dad lost his job, then shortly after he was diagnosed with two brain aneurisms. Not too long after that Shelby shared with her family that she was gay, which tested their relationship. Then her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after a short time undergoing treatment, she died the day after Christmas.

Kirsten Carlson shares with us her grief journey after the sudden, recent death of her mother. She is still in “the gray in between” part of her journey. Her mom’s death was also the catalyst for her to share with her family about the sexual abuse she had endured as a child from her own father. This also became a reason for her choosing to no longer have him be a part of her life, now that her mom has died. A great part of our conversation is on the topic of her abuse and how “giving the ghost a name, has empowered her”. We also talk a lot about the different dynamics and relationships that have shifted in her life because of her revealing this truth, but also about her own growth and knowing that she can trust her intuition and thoughts. She uses writing about her thoughts and feelings, as a tool to help her in her grief and healing journey. Her outlook on life is positive and she focuses on living her emotions moment to moment as they come instead of worrying about what her grief or life will be like in the future.

In this episode with Genell Gorman, we talk about childhood trauma and how it can show up in different ways later in life. We also talk about how to handle triggers.

Here is Genell's bio in her own words:

"While growing up I experienced abandonment, trauma and loss that followed me throughout my early adult life until it all came to a head in my mid 20’s. Through a very painful break up, my awakening was brought on. All of the pain from my past came to the surface. One of them being my father's passing from when I was just 9 years old. Since the journey began I have engaged in intensive one-on-one psychotherapy, therapy retreats focused on healing loss, inner-child work, self love, abandonment work and meditation practices.

I am so thankful for all of the healing I have done to find my true purpose on who I really am. I never realized how much my father's passing impacted me throughout my life, but the more I studied, the more I was able to put all of the puzzle pieces together and be able to distinguish why I was the way I was. It all brought me right back to my fatherless daughter wound.

I understand how much others normalize that not having or growing up without a father in your life is “OK” which at the end of the day is wrong in so many ways. It is crucial for us to have both parents in our life while growing up and when we don't have that, well that can really affect us in so many different aspects of our life (relationships, friendships, worklife, etc.)

After all was said and done I decided what better way than to share my knowledge on how I was finally able to heal from my father's passing after 16 years. I started coaching both privately and in groups to help other women who were in my position, allowing them to heal the pain that has been sitting inside of them waiting to come out for so long. I am honored to take this journey helping others heal from all of their pain and helping you find out who they are meant to be. "

We talk about her songwritting process and talk about many themes but in particular how to use songrwritting as a tool to process grief. She shares with us about how she translates her emotions into music, and about her creative process.

In this episode we also talk about how music can be a portal to deeper connection with self. This can happen as the artist is creating it as well as for the listener who connects with the music as he/she listens.

"Autumn Toelle-Jackson has lived a life of love and loss, filled with happiness and marked by tragedy. Labels are too simple, but they do have meaning and they do tell part of her story: wife, widow, mother, survivor. The loss of a husband, a beloved cousin and mentor, and her daughter have left scars on her soul and memorial tattoos on her body, but Autumn learned to grow through it all.

She found love and reasons to get up each day until those days strung into weeks, then months, then years. Autumn wrote "Boldly into the Darkness: Living with Loss, Growing with Grief and Holding onto Happiness" to share her story. She also created www.GrowingwithGrief.com with her family to provide those who are grieving with a place to find community, resources, and help." (Bio from her book)

It was an honor to interview Lisa Price during this episode and hear about how in her grief journey, after the death of her daughter Ari, she had the choice to be Bitter or Better. She chose Better, and is now helping countless other parents with their grief journey.

Lisa Price is grief wellness coach, the founder of Grieve. Breathe. Believe., and creator of the 4:13 Method - a self-guided online course emphasizing best practices and the importance of holistic, daily dedicated self-care; physical fitness, nutrition, journaling, meditation, mindfulness, and more. She facilitates a safe, yet productive community for grieving parents to rediscover and reconstruct a life of meaning and purpose after the death of their child.

She is married to Brandon and the mother of two; her 8-year-old son, Chase, and daughter, Ari, who died in April 2017.

After her daughter's death, Lisa soon realized there were not nearly enough resources and supports for a loss requiring extra special care and attention. Working with experts in the field of grief and bereavement, prioritizing her own healing and 'grief work', she felt called to fill the gap. It then became her mission to provide a platform with continuous, consistent, and constructive support to help bereaved parents walking a very similar journey. Along with the self-guided course, she offers group and 1:1 coaching. She hosts live workshops and events, virtual conferences, and has written resource guides for both bereaved parents and those supporting them in grief, sharing tips, tools, and tangible action steps for their lifelong journey. She is QPR certified and is currently writing a children's grief book. Lisa firmly believes that by honoring your life, you honor your child.
