Theater of War is a dramatic reading of Sophocles’ “Ajax,” presented on April 17 at the Rockaway Theatre Company’s Post Theater at Fort Tilden from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m, The company presents readings of Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes to military and civilian communities across the United States and Europe. These ancient plays timelessly and universally depict the visible and invisible wounds of war. By presenting these plays to military and civilian audiences, the hope is to de-stigmatize psychological injury, increase awareness of post-deployment psychological health issues, disseminate information regarding available resources, and foster greater family, community, and troop resilience.
Theater of War is a dramatic reading of Sophocles’ “Ajax,” presented on April 17 at the Rockaway Theatre Company’s Post Theater at Fort Tilden from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m, Theater of War aims to confront some of the issues that result from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition with which many people on the peninsula may already be familiar. Ajax recounts the tragedy of the suicide of a great, respected warrior. It is translated, directed and facilitated by Bryan Doerries. TOW notes the work “read(s) like textbook descriptions of wounded warriors, struggling under the weight of psychological and physical injuries to maintain their dignity, identity, and honor.”
This week, former NYC Councilman and U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner will join the show to discuss the latest issues facing Rockaway. Weiner, who now concentrates on being a dad and pursuing media and consulting opportunities is still very much talked about on the peninsula, and many wish he, not Bill de Blasio, were the mayor of NYC.
On this week's Riding The Wave, Jack Freidman, Executive Director of The Queens Chamber of Commerce, will join us to discuss the upcoming Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 21. The newly formed Rockaway Beach Merchant Association will be throwing the party, which will run from noon to 5 p.m. at Beach 94th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
We'll also discuss the QCC's support of the Queens Way project, which by it's very nature, directly opposes the efforts for the complete restoration of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line.
