The Podcast Your Sponsor Warned You About™ The addiction recovery podcast that's been called entertaining, thoughtful, insightful, welcoming, authentic, disappointing, dismissive, ignorant, and a bunch of wasted time.
Hosted by The Indie Darlings of Recovery Podcasting™ Jeff & Matt & Chris
Rx-Strength Recovery™ We may not be the recovery podcast for you.
Part Two of the Plant Medicine, Medical Marijuana Maintenance episode, Chris and Matt both report back on their new realities. Post Holiday Dry January reports from the crew!
Explosive revelations rock the pod. Matt is off MJ...and Chris in on!? Holy smokes Batman! it's a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a high tech vape pen!
The Boys start to promote Dry January, give their learned opinion of recovery space, therapy and working out
One Correction: The NA pumpkin ale sold out. The Boys discuss the AA meeting next door, use their detective skills as to who might be an alkie and Chris's trips.
Jeff and Matt are all alone for this cast! We talk about Matt's DUI class, Mcsweeney's and Michael Schur's thoughts on DFW.
The boys celebrate National Sobriety Day, which kind of snuck up on us again this year. They also talk about DUI's, Recovery Fest and hot takes on pop culture.
Jeff is surprised people are still huffing, the boys discuss the craziest shit that's gone down at meetings, and updated consent rules.
Matt gets a sponsor, WellBeing Waters are Good, and Chris catches us up on some doings.
The one where the guys argue about the safety and/or efficacy of CBD for addicts and normies alike.
The one where the guys backtrack (kinda) on selling out (to themselves.)
The one where the guys finally sell out. To themselves.
Since Right Now Season 6: Rearranging Recovery

"I was one of those drinkers that blacked out the first time I drank. I thought I wouldn't drink again. Three days later I did."—Jo on SRN
Jo is just beginning her story in recovery and most of what she’d normally put in a bio happened during years of active addiction, but they did contribute to who she is today.
Jo has been in the fundraising world for most of her career. She’s worked for everyone from the ASPCA (have you SEEN that Sara McLachlan commercial—you can thank her) to MADD (ironic isn’t it?). Her background gives her a different perspective on addiction. Jo sees the movement as early advocates saw HIV/AIDS or international child hunger. She asks herself questions about where the movement fits in the share of donor giving already so competitive or how to break out of the stigma and mainstream recovery support much like Susan G. Komen demanded we stop mourning cancer and celebrate survival.
But for now, Jo’s just a middle-age woman in recovery who went back to school in her 40’s, finished an Addiction Counseling program and now works with young men who are battling this disease every day. She believes there’s nothing like seeing the devastation and the miracles up close.
She doesn’t blog, our show will be her first ever telling her story publically but she is 100% committed to whatever she can do go give the disease a mainstream platform and help people who want to find the place to recover outloud. Starting with 6 guys in a house in Maryland.

Together, Scott and Shaaren run two businesses, have created a non-profit—Restaurant Recovery™—, serve on two boards, and are raising their daughter, Ara.
Scott is continuing his career in the restaurant industry, and, through their non-profit, he and Shaaren are dedicated to helping others out of addiction's darkness. Sean has been a writer, humorist and storyteller since he learned how to speak. He didn't actually start getting paid for these things, however, until he got sober in 2009. Since then Mahoney's two original comedies, Casual Encounters/Missed Connections and The Singing Room enjoyed successful sold-out runs in Denver in 2012 and 2013, respectively. A collection of Mahoney's one-act comedies, A Fairy's Tales debuted last summer while other short works continue to be submitted, rejected and sometimes even accepted by playwrighting festivals around the country.
Mahoney and his husband are the co-founders of Horse & Cart, a theatrical production company dedicated to new works. Mahoney's writing can next be seen in Your Heart is a Radio, a monologue mixtape debuting this fall and in a collection of his writing about recovery entitled, Sparkleholic to be released in 2016. "I think I was drinking suicidally from day one where I need to drink myself into oblivion and not feel or remember anything." —Jill on SRN
Jillian Bauer is a Philadelphia-based multimedia entrepreneur and educator specializing in audiovisual storytelling. She was recently profiled by the Philadelphia City Paper, WHYY and The Philadelphia Inquirer for her work on The Rooms Project, a photo and audio story series on individuals living in recovery from addiction and alcoholism.
Since March 2014 Jillian has driven through nearly twenty states where she’s captured the stories of more than 100 people. Through her work she aims to share stories of life on the other side of addiction, giving recovery a voice through the stories of experience, strength, and hope often heard in "the rooms" of recovery support groups and meetings.
When she’s not traveling, Jillian teaches courses in journalism and interactive design at Temple and Philadelphia University. On the weekends she eats lots of snacks and spends time with "Mr. Jill." Feel free to find out more about Jillian at @throomsproject on Twitter.

"(The counselor) had me go through the "Are You and Alcoholic?" checklist…and I said 'yes' to just about everything and I think I said, 'But I don't know if I have a problem.' And she was like, why did you come here?" —Laura on SRN
Laura Silverman is the founder of The Sobriety Collective, a resource and blog created to celebrate recovery in all its forms. In 2007, at age 24, Laura pulled a 180 and went from insecure, anxious binge drinker to newly-minted sober 20-something. This scary (but, for her, absolutely necessary) step catapulted her into a journey of long-term recovery. She may not be a card-carrying member of AA, but Laura will always have gratitude for the program that welcomed her with open arms and helps millions of others around the world. She believes in the raw power of storytelling and thanks Koren Zailckas, Sacha Z. Scoblic, Caroline Knapp, Kristen Johnston, and Sarah Hepola for their fantastic memoirs of addiction and recovery.
Laura absolutely loves the #RecoveryFriendlyWeb in all its glory and is super-pumped for the new recovery movement’s UNITE to Face Addiction in Washington, DC this October. Laura also spits fi-yah on a karaoke mic.

"Paul" is a recovering alcoholic, currently following a PhD into the neuromechanisms of addictive behaviours. His own experience of recovery, coupled with his research over several years, led him to question why the way addicts and alcoholics talk about their condition as an “emotional disease” is rarely addressed in theories of addiction.
Chris jacked into the Trans-Atlantic Interweb to chat with this fascinating Irishman about recovery, AA, emotional disregulation, the acceptance of prescribed medication in sobriety, and much more.

Tell A Friend…Seriously, Tell A Friend.
Thanks for sticking with us while we took a couple of weeks off to deck our halls, roast our chestnuts and dash through snow laughing all the way. (And, no, none of those are euphemisms.) I toyed with making a withdrawal reference but it seemed a bit too lazy and probably not that funny and two of my NY rezzies are to be less lazy and more funny. And besides, I know you missed us.
The important thing is that we're back and back and talking recovery with a new episode of the Since Right Now Pod.
• The in-studio SRN Crew of Jeff, Matt and Chris—that's me—catch up and chat about resolutions and the challenges we faced and wonders we witnessed during this past Season of Joy, Merriment and Crushing Anxiety.
• I think we start making plans to put on a pop-up dry bar here in the STL
• We talk about the smoking elephant in the rooms: smoking in recovery
• Jeff and Matt (AA) help Chris (non-AA) work through some Step 4 and Step 9 questions with some 12 Step advice
• Oh, and Chris gives a shameless, but genuine, plug for his new favorite chilly B, Q Ginger Ale , and Jeff gives Chantix another ringing endorsement
• And a whole load of shite about inferiority complexes, self-loathing and the generally dickish behaviour of our pasts. Whee!
• Marilyn will join us (ir)regularly beginning with Ep.1502.0 to cast a ray of light over these somber proceedings

Waking Up the Ghost? I’ll let Marilyn explain:
“… the first time I heard that expression, I was sitting on a deserted island in the Exumas, with a jaundiced Bahamian named Sands. I think it is also the first time a Bahamian man has ever refused a free drink. What Sands meant, was that the icy beer I offered would lead to another, and another and another; it was safer to keep the Ghost in check by not drinking at all.”
A year and a half into her recovery Marilyn shares some insight on keeping the spirit(s) at bay.

SOMETIMES YOU DO GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION.
In which the S.O.S meeting Jeff and Chris set out to attend is not the S.O.S. meeting they find. Which then leads Jeff to facilitate Chris’ second attempt at attending an A.A. meeting.
Will he go in?
Will he stay?
Do they cast him out as an imposter?
Do they welcome him as a brother?
Is there coffee?

We briefly consider how we, as addicts, feel about the terms used to describe us. By others? By ourselves? Then we consider—at length!—what's up with addicts so often being plagued by depression and creativity.

Jeff and Chris chat—and laugh—about getting to the truth in recovery (both in general and in the context of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous,) the shame we accumulate during our active addiction, and how it all sort of ties into our big, messy addicts' egos.

Longtime-friends, Chris and Jeff, have over 30 years in relapse-free recovery between them. In this episode they continute to each learn a bit more about the other's recovery. The emotional and sensory numbness of early-sobriety and the "you" that you have to deal with once the alcohol and/or drugs are gone are two topics explored.
Notes:
•I need to take notes. I apologize to Peter Litton and Tom Mohr of SoberingStories.com for a less-than-artful telling of your story. I also need to beg forgiveness from StopHeroin.org for not being better prepared to tell your story. Listeners, please clicks the preceding links to learn more about these two groups and the powerful work they're doing.
•Regarding issues covered on the Since Right Now Podcast we are not professionals. We're just a couple of 40-something guys with two different paths to long-term sobriety offering opinions and insights based on their experiences. We do, however, hope you find something intereseting and hopefully relevant to your recovery.
•Also, Chris was suffering from a bit of low-grade dysthymia this episode.
Meet your co-hosts, long-time friends, Chris and Jeff, as they discuss how they got to right now. Jeff, the one who just celebrated 14 years of sobriety, has been goint to AA since before he was in recovery. Chris, who'll soon celebrate 17 years, has never been to a meeting.
This is the beginning of what we hope will be an insightful, inspirational, challenging and hopeful exploration of recovery in all its forms. On the Since Right Now Podcast we'll laugh about recovery (and addiction), we'll swear at addiction (and ourselves) and maybe…just maybe…on some future episode…we'll talk about that one time when we cried.
It began not with a bang, but with a whimper.
I have exhumed the very first expression of Since Right Now and have recommitted it to the record for posterity and the completists.
Recorded on an iPhone using the white Apple earbuds. Originally released June 15, 2014.
