Welcome to the final episode of Threads Podcast: Life Unfiltered. In this episode, Jason and Mike (and Ben) reflect on the highs and lows of their journey and share one thing they wish they could have done differently on the show. They also have a special surprise, as Mike has a sentimental gift for Jason.

As we come to the end of this podcast, we cannot help but think about the moments that have defined our time together. We have shared our stories, laughed, cried, and learned so much from each other and our guests. However, looking back, we realize there is one thing we wish we could have done differently on the show.

Before we say our final goodbyes, Mike has a surprise gift for Jason. Over the years, we have become more than just co-hosts, we have become close friends. This gift is a symbol of the bond we have created through this podcast.

In conclusion, we want to thank our listeners for joining us on this journey. We hope that you have learned as much from us as we have from you. This podcast may be ending, but the memories and experiences we have gained from it will stay with us forever

Ep. 209 Why is it so hard to make and keep friends as an adult?

Episode Summary:Dawn Taylor welcomes Jason Tieri, host of Threads Podcast, to the show to dive into why adult friendships are difficult. From childhood trauma blocking adult connections to a lack of properly communicated expectations, Dawn and Jason break down why adult friends are hard to come by.

Episode Notes:

Dawn Taylor welcomes Jason Tieri, host of Threads Podcast, to the show to dive into why adult friendships are difficult. From childhood trauma blocking adult connections to a lack of properly communicated expectations, Dawn and Jason break down why adult friends are hard to come by.

Jason explains how past abuse and a less than ideal childhood may have contributed to his difficulty making friends as an adult, but he also wonders if men find it more challenging to get deep with each other in addition to trading jokes. And what about that ride or die friend? Does everyone find one?

Dawn and Jason talk about the differences in personalities that make each friendship unique and sometimes uniquely challenging, what it’s like when a friendship breaks down, and the expectations we place on friends. They reveal some truths about what they each want in a friendship and maybe also what they truly need. What do you want in your friendships? And how will you make more? Find out with Dawn and Jason.

About Jason Tieri:

Jason is a loving husband, supportive dad, and avid gig economy hustler. While he has a fun and boisterous personality, he also enjoys thinking deeply and learning more about people. Jason is passionate about running, being the best husband and dad that he can be, and growing in all areas of his life.

This one gets off to a really rough start, such a rough start that those listening live weren’t sure that it would even be a show.

But Mike and Jason rallied and pulled off a pretty decent show. And Jason had so many good points at the end about asthma and gas stoves that Mike has decided to become a libertarian and will vote for Justin Amash as President.

Just over a year ago Joe Pellerito was on the show. In that episode, Joe shared his journey of leaving Christianity and how he had just shared with those around him that he was not a Christian.

This time Joe joins us to share the fallout that has happened because of his decision to come out as not being a Christian. He shares how his last year has looked. Joe also gets uber-vulnerable about his mental health.

And random side-note, you gotta listen to see if Jason finally wins a competition against a guest.

Ep. 178 || Rekindling a Friendship…not the one you think

In the last regular episode of last season (Episode 173) Jason and Mike talk about how their friendship has been neglected. We both had been so busy with life and podcasting that our friendship had been neglected.

Whelp, over the “break” between seasons, we had plans to spend some time hanging out together and not have it be business, BUT life got in the way.

So, in this episode, Jason and Mike sit down and catch up on life…and hopefully start to rekindle their friendship.

Nukes. God’s Plan. Sniffing Waffles. Flare Guns. Getting Lost in Space.

What do all of these seemingly random things have in common?

They are all part of an uncomfortable, YET amazing conversation that Jason and Mike have. At first, we were anxious to have the conversation, yet by the end, we were so happy that we had an uncomfortable conversation about the will of God.

And of course, Jason and Mike went off on some tangents, but let’s be honest, tangents are sometimes where the best conversations happen.

Whether you are a Christian or atheist, or somewhere in between we hope that you join us. And as always, we hope you send your opinions and views to hello@threadspodcast.com

Whelp, that was fun.

The guys had so much fun hanging out with Chris Tallon. From the very beginning, the show was a mixture of fun & thoughtfulness.

Even trivia was a mixture of fun & thoughtfulness.

When the guys got into the meat of hanging out with Chris they discussed his upcoming book, which sounds like it’s gonna be an amazing read. Jason and Mike hope Chris does an author read audiobook, because what’s better than a great book being read to you by the author.

Jason & Chris have some air to clear from some past hurts and while it was an uncomfortable conversation it was a healing conversation.

From there Jason, Chris, and Mike have some deep conversations about being shunned, taking a break from weed & alcohol, and how to find a good therapist.

Have you ever lost someone or something that was extremely important to you? How did you experience grief? How did you process the grief? How are you still processing the grief?

As Jason and Mike sit down to catch up in this “personal format” episode, they talk about how they are processing the loss of their friendship with Ben. Jason and Mike have been processing this loss in different ways and yet have come to similar places. And after processing this loss Mike is convinced that there is one last thing he needs to do.

And of course, this is not what the guys talk about for the whole episode, cause that would be boring and really drawn out. They catch up on the highs and lows of their past few weeks, hold each other accountable, and end with an unfiltered discussion about what is still drawing them to Jesus even though the Church seems to be a mess.

Keep the Faith. Do Your Work. Live Life Unfiltered.

Jason and Mike describe what these words mean to them and Mike even admits that he was originally wrong about one of the phrases and now actually likes it. And to make things even better the guys don’t stop with what these words mean to them, but how living out these words has helped them improve and become a better version of themselves. And then to top it off Jason & Mike share how these words can help others become the best version of themselves.

From there the guys continue to talk about what they are learning and how they are taking this knowledge and putting it into action to again become the best version of themselves. And because self-improvement is never-ending the guys get super real with where they want to grow. Mike goes as far as to reveal how he is determined to not let something he has been mocked about for years keep him from some awesome opportunities that have arisen.

A couple of weeks ago Jason and Mike spouted their thoughts on homelessness and poverty. And they quickly realized that they wanted to talk to an expert.

Enter Terri Caldwell, an emerging voice (and expert) in West Michigan about homelessness and generational poverty. Terri brought so much wisdom and heart to the discussion about homelessness and generational poverty. And while Terri is cautious about considering herself an expert, the guys quickly realize that Terri is indeed an expert.

Multiple times throughout the conversation Terri gives Jason the chills with what she is sharing. And she only had to school the guys a couple of times.

In the end, Jason and Mike are left hopeful about what is going on in the community to battle homelessness and generational poverty and are moved to be part of the solution themselves.

Ways to contact Terri: Email (terri.doorsofhope@coahm.org) or Phone (616.748.6017)

Ways to get involved: Run or Support a Doors of Hope Runner in the Tulip Time Run (you should click on Mike so he wins)

Ways to educate yourself: The Search for Stability Symposium (Terri will be a panelist) and Bridges Out Of Poverty

As Jason and Mike sit down to catch up they realize that they both had some huge wins these past couple of weeks AND a couple of places they want to improve.

But then the real fun begins, they air their grievances with each other. And not because they want to be jerks to each other, but because they want to be better friends and be the best that they can be.

From there they dive into an article about how to help them foster good mental health in their kids. And because they don’t just want to talk about it, they each pick one thing they want to work on in their parenting.

And because they like to watch the world burn, or at least Mike does, the guys discuss the vaccines and how some people don’t want to get them and the fact that vaccines are required in many countries where mission trips occur.

And at the end you may or may not hear Jason’s dogs bark and Jason getting a little frustrated…maybe just maybe.

For the past few months, Jason has been seeing the same guy begging on the street corner while wearing Jordans.

So after a rousing round of Smart A** trivia questions, Jason and Mike dive into homelessness.

While Mike and Jason are not experts on homelessness they share their unfiltered views and process where those views may have come from. And try to figure out some practical solutions, that leave one of us very uncomfortable.

They quickly determine that they need to bring in an expert in the future to help them navigate this tricky topic, cause the guys don’t want to just talk about it but actually do something about homelessness.

Ep. 164 || Jason and Mike mess up in some key relationships, what is heaven like, and the water challenge update.

Jason and Mike sit down to check in with each other, hold each other accountable, and maybe, just maybe get lost in the weeds about a faith topic that has perplexed both of them.

Along the way, we discover many things about Jason and Mike. We discover that Mike is very strict about the water challenge and may end up in the doghouse for how he talks about it. We also discover that Jason had a proud dad moment. We discover that Jason had a sucky therapy session and that Mike is afraid of what medicine might do to his creativity.

Lastly, we are perplexed about the secret that Natalie (Mike’s wife) wanted to share but didn’t when Jason, Meaghan, Mike, and Natalie went out for dinner. What is the secret?

We will be back on Jan 14th 2022 with a brand new episode! Thanks for listening!

Ben & Jason are raving fans of mental health therapy. But they had some lingering questions about the therapy process, and what healthy boundaries with a therapist look like.

Why do therapists awkwardly stop talking in a session? Why don't therapists just tell you what to do? How "informed" should clients be about the goings-on of their therapist? Can you be friends with your therapist??

And what on earth is up with quick-fix modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)? Are all CBT practitioners crocks??

Ben brings up a sermon he heard at church over 10 years ago to get us started. We talk about what is the easiest and most difficult to give of - our time, our talent, or or treasure.

Mike introduces the 80/20 rule of life and how it is impacting how he views parenting, fitness, and more.

Jason wraps us up by talking about the stupid stress of giving gifts at Christmas, and how holidays are difficult for those who grew up with ongoing trauma in the home.

Mike joins us for another conversation among friends. Our discussion centers around the legacy we are leaving with our kids, and the legacy that was left for us by our parents and grandparents. How do we react (or overreact!) to our kids when they are acting out? We wrap by talking about the impact that Michigan's covid surge is having on each of us and our families.

Mike joins us this month as we sit down and press record. These episodes are sure to be a treat, like eavesdropping on the conversations among good friends. All three of the guys open up with varying levels of vulnerability... and one of them even sheds a tear or two! Bet you can't guess who!

This was a hard episode. Jason's mom, who was abusive to him and his siblings growing up, was on death's doorstep as we recorded this episode. We hope that Jason's transparency and honesty about the situation is helpful to other adult children of abusive parents who are nearing death.

We also chatted about a book that Ben is reading for work, and why it's so hard for Ben to be "told" what to do. Ben also talked about the TV drama A Million Little Things and how it is not his usual show.

We wrap up by talking about the things we're grateful for, in the spirit of Thanksgiving this week.

And what on earth is up with quick fix modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)? Are all CBT practitioners crocks??

Listen as Meaghan (Jason's wife) and Andi (Ben's wife) join us for an unfiltered conversation about gender roles and the often invisible burden that wives typically carry. Things get a bit tense and uncomfortable at some points, but that is where growth happens.

Recently, Ben made the decision to stop going to seeing his therapist weekly. Out of care and concern for his bestie, Jason questioned whether that was the right move. This conversation came to a head when the guys sat down to record, and they inadvertently recorded this episode in addition the planned one!

David Tiesma, friend of the show and host of the Watch Your Mouth Podcast, takes over as host of Threads on this episode. We start out with a game to see who knows the other person better, Ben or Jason. Any guesses who won?? Then, David led us through a discussion in which we answered questions of varying depth. Though it was admittedly weird to turn over the reins as hosts, Ben and Jason had a great time recording this episode.

Special thanks to David for making this happen! Check out his show, Watch Your Mouth Podcast, at https://anchor.fm/watchyourmouthpod!

Buckle up, this episode is a bit of a doozy! Ben and Jason catch up on life and along the way debrief some challenges they encountered in their friendship. Listen in as Ben shares how his bike was stolen, and returned! Jason shares about how things are going in his relationships as he seeks to be more calm and level headed. The guys also explore some ongoing conversations between them and their friend Mike, who Ben went to college with.

Ben and Jason wrap things up by giving a mental health update. Ben went completely off script, which threw Jason for a loop!

Sometimes you need a space to just get everything off your chest. That is what this episode was for Ben & Jason. This episode was recorded after the governing bodies of two local counties were angrily confronted by anti-maskers. We debrief some of their comments and offer our own opinions on current events.

Gear up for some seriously unfiltered conversation. We let it all out there and you're left to sort it together and make sense of it. Have fun with that ;-)

Listen in as we record remotely - thanks covid. We had a great conversation digging into why it is difficult for Jason to identify a time when he felt most alive. Ben talks church and plays a clip from that day's church service. Jason shares about the intentional work he and Meaghan are doing to improve their relationship - even when it is hard. We ask each other 2 questions and enjoy putting the other on the spot to answer without any time to think.

Ben took his family on a crazy journey west to Oregon, back east to Montana, and then back west to Portland and the Oregon coast. Along the way, the Krakers met some of their son Stefan's biological relatives.

This trip definitely had a lot of wildcard moments where Ben & wife Andi were simply out of control, and had no other choice but to go with the flow.

Listen in to find out how it went, and about the incredible happenings that took place!

We all know that it is important to see a mental health therapist. Ben and Jason have spent many hours encouraging listeners to seek this out.

But what if there are barriers to seeing a therapist?

What if there are smaller baby steps that need to be taken first?

How can we work on our mental health, outside of the therapist's office?

Listen in as we discuss the answers to these questions!

Mike VanDrie joins us to talk about current events and catch up on the happenings in our own lives. We cover the gamut -- when competition doesn't feel friendly, angry Mike, and Jason talks about going to church!

After some amazing banter, we jump into the meat of this episode and tackle some current events. Ben brought an article about post-COVID burnout to the table, Jason showed us a video that we spent a lot of time unpacking, and Mike informed us of the ridiculous hunting/fishing prohibition law that is being considered in Oregon!

Jason was recently diagnosed with a pretty serious physical condition. Meanwhile, he and Meaghan hit a tricky spot in their communication. Ben found out he was hacked, and dealt with hackers at work after the fourth of July break.

Ben and Jason talk through some perceived judgment that Jason felt coming from Ben. Things get a bit uncomfortable but are resolved in the end.

You'll hear a bit of memory lane (including the moonwalking bear) as we revisit bits of Episode 4.

Atheist, skeptic, and free-thinker Katherine Roberts used to be a pastor for 20+ years. Listen as she shares about her deeply emotional salvation experience, and find out why she no longer sees that event as spiritual.

Katherine and her husband were victims of a Ponzi scheme that operated out of their church building. As if that wasn't crazy enough, another unexpected happening was learning 16 years later that her husband had an affair and was father to another woman's child.

We close with an impassioned discussion about what faith is, and how nobody has been able to convince Katherine that God is real.

Ben & Jason share how they would handle cringey parenting situations -- including whether or not to wipe the arse of your child's friend who is at your house for a visit! We also talk about pictures of our kids on other parents' social media, lying on those pesky "how many books did your kid read" forms, and more. Check out the cringey situations here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/mikespohr/11-hilariously-hard-what-would-you-do-questions-for-parents

We also speak candidly about whether we are helping our kids pursue what is good for them, or if we are more committed to encouraging them to pursue what is BEST. Read more here: https://www.daniel-wong.com/2012/05/26/10-questions-that-successful-parents-ask-themselves/

Joe Reid is founder of the Broken People mental health peer support group and author of Broken Like Me: An Insider's Toolkit to Mending Broken People.

About his book, Joe writes, "I didn’t write it to make a lot of money, but out of a need to survive. It is born out of my story. I write about things in this book that made life easier, and at times, probably kept me alive. No one should have to wait to tell their story until they have everything figured out, and that’s what I’m trying to make sure you don’t have to do. If you feel broken, I wrote this for you."

Joe exemplifies vulnerability and authenticity that is not often encountered. His raw honesty is refreshingly motivating. If you've ever felt broken, you will find yourself in good company with Joe.

Ben and Mike revisit Episode 3 of Threads. It was a doozy. Ben was stuck in a pretty dark place. As if that wasn't bad enough, the audio quality was pretty subpar, too! We've come a long way since Episode 3.

Having grown up in the same area, these two guys grew up in very similar homes. Listen as they reflect on some unhealthy communication patterns that went on in their homes.

Mike talks about the ways his family engages with their neighbors, and Ben and Mike reflect on their kayak outing a couple weeks ago. Has Ben converted Mike to the joys of kayaking? Listen and find out!

Mental health is often discussed at length on the show, but rarely is physical health talked as often. Since early this year, Ben, Jason, and Mike have been on a journey towards better physical health. Along the way, they've been learning some valuable lessons and gaining insights about the connection between physical activity and improved mental health.

This connection is something that has been observed in the healthcare field with nurses. During the pandemic, nurses were stressed out and suffering poor mental health conditions. This resulted in more preventable medical errors.

Ben, Jason, and Mike are all obese by the BMI standards. Obesity often causes depression, and kicks off a vicious cycle that includes anxiety and self-deprecating thoughts. Listen in to hear more about this cycle.

We wrap by comparing perceptions of mental health in the US/UK, and touch one last time on the healthcare field's view of mental health.

Joe Pellerito from the ReChoice Podcast joins us to discuss his story of finding - and leaving - Christianity.

What led him to faith? What caused him to leave? How did he feel when he finally made that decision? How did his loved ones respond?

You're about to hear an honest discussion about what it means to be human and how we can live our lives without religion or dogma dictating the way we live. Why is there such an emphasis on shame in Christianity? Why does the Jesus in the Bible seem so different from the Jesus that Americans follow?

Ben and Jason sit down to recap the last couple of weeks, which were definitely loaded to the brim with challenges. Jason found out some crazy news about his family of origin -- and decided to start doing some research in order to settle rumors that were floating around. Meanwhile, Ben had a difficult week as a dad, but ultimately found a meaningful way to connect with his daughter. Many couples anticipate wedded bliss as they stand at their ceremony in front of their families and friends. "The charming melodies of your partner chewing, every dirty dish stacked to perfection, passionate dialogue that is definitely NOT yelling!" is how our guests Nathan and Emily describe what marriage sometimes feels like.

How does a couple divorce proof their marriage? Is there such a thing as a perfect marriage? What's even the point of marriage?

Listen in as Nathan and Emily from "Twice as Less Not Perfect: A Messy Marriage Podcast" take their stab at answering these and other deep questions about doing life together as a married couple.

Once upon a time, Ben & Threads Podcast: Life Unfiltered listener Mike Van Drie went to Cornerstone University together. During the same timespan. They had many classes together. Yet, it wasn't until many years later that the two of them connected in a meaningful way.

Mike at first thought a message from Ben about Threads was spam, so he ignored it for a couple weeks. Then he saw something on Facebook about Threads and decided to give it a listen, and he has been hooked since!

In addition to being a Cornerstone University alumni, Mike is a youth pastor, husband, and adoptive dad. But more than anything else, Mike is transparent and vulnerable. Pastors are not always known for being comfortable discussing their doubts and big questions of the faith... but Mike had no problem going there.

Here on the Threads Podcast: Life Unfiltered, it can be easy to get comfortable with our normal show. Talk about life's valleys and mountains? Check. Talk about mental health? Done.

We often challenge you, our listeners, to step out of your comfort zone. Go to therapy. Be real in your communication. And at some point... we need to be challenged, too. That's why we are intentionally focusing on having uncomfortable conversations on our show. When we get uncomfortable, growth happens.

On this episode, we are joined by Natalie Wanner, author of Crazy on the Inside: A Memoir of Nobody Special. After the typical suburban lifestyle sucked the joy and fulfillment out of her life, Natalie and her husband decided to take an unorthodox approach to helping Natalie find relief. They opened their marriage, allowing Natalie room to go to New York City once a month to live out her dream of being a writer in The Big Apple. Natalie was also free to form new relationships and seek out the fulfillment and joy that had gone missing.

Author, podcaster, and Pastor Eric Jackson joins us to talk about how so many Christians have become domesticated and dumbed down by their churches and the cheap "Christianese" culture. Eric invites our listeners to live the opposite of domesticated and be feral in their faith - no matter how messy that pursuit might be.

Though we admittedly got a bit into the weeds of Christianity, there should definitely be something in this episode that all listeners will find intriguing.

Listen in as our new friend Chris Misterek talks about his struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Chris happens to come from a family where mental illness was prevalent on both sides, and not everyone impacted sought the help they needed.

Chris shares openly about his journey that led him from full-time ministry into being a single dad needing a side hustle to make ends meet. After putting his kids to bed, Chris started doing freelance web design. This pursuit eventually bloomed into a full blown business, and now Chris is passionate about helping others on the same journey.

He also shares about what it is like to not have any control over his thought life, and how he was finally able to get help. You’ll hear stories about the pitfalls of “Biblical counseling,” but also stories about the incredible effectiveness of treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy paired with medicine.

To learn more about Chris’ work, check out The Self Made Web Designer.

Babita Spinelli is a licensed therapist who practices in the greater NYC area. She takes a psychodynamic approach to therapy and focuses on attachment issues. Her key area of expertise is narcissism, and on this episode Babita fills Ben & Jason in on what narcissism looks like and how to engage with those who are narcissists. During the conversation, Jason felt a bit uncomfortable and wondered if he himself is a narcissist! Ben reassured Jason that if he truly was a narcissist, he wouldn't have the ability to notice that in himself. Babita further calmed Jason's nerves by saying we ALL have narcissistic tendencies at times. Babita is an extremely intelligent and thoughtful therapist who made "heady" topics easily approachable on this episode. We look forward to collaborating with her again in the future!

Check out a couple of articles Babita recently authored, in light of the covid-19 pandemic:

  • How to Avoid Burnout while Working at Home
  • 8 Ways to Survive (and Thrive!) While Being Holed Up with your Spouse

Have you ever met a person whose presence just warms up the room? Anne Lafleur is one of those people. Anne has dedicated her life to spreading what she calls The Gift of Happiness and one of the ways she does this is through her project Signs of Kindness. This project puts signs displaying encouraging messages on the front lawns throughout neighborhoods in America. Listen in as Ben & Jason find out more about Anne's passion, her views on faith, and the legacy she wants to leave behind.

Ben & Jason both have signs in their yards thanks to Anne, and so does Ben's neighbor! One of our listeners, Kate, also has one. A local veterinarian's office also ordered signs from Anne to display in their parking lot. These signs tend to put a smile on the faces of people as they pass by.

Want to learn more about Anne's mission, or inquire about putting a sign on display? Check out The Gift of Happiness website and Facebook Page.

With everyone stuck at home, everything just seems so different. So we figured we would make the most of this new normal and host a remote show with long-time listeners and previous Threads guests. Each guest got to share with us about how things have been going in their families during the COVID-19 outbreak. We also talked about what we're watching in light of sports being canceled. Apparently, marble racing is a thing!

We were joined by...

Matt Philpott - Ben & Matt went to the same college together, but did not really know each other back then. Matt has been listening for just over a year, after hearing about Threads on the Eric Zane Show. Matt works for a local health organization. Dave Tiesma - Dave returns to the show after appearing on Episode 17! Dave is a banker in the West Michigan area. Chris Bruinsma - Chris has also been listening to the show for quite a while, and has interacted with Ben and Jason off the air in some random & funny ways. He is a plumber by trade. Megan Dineff - Megan returns to the show after appearing on a couple of different recent episodes. Megan manages a local car repair facility.

Hey friends, Ben here. In times like these, it is so important to focus on our mental health. As covid-19 continues to spread across the globe, so many of us are battling fear and anxiety. Thankfully, there are people like Khara Croswaite Brindle who are dedicated to walking alongside the anxious, depressed, and suicidal among us.

Khara is a therapist who practices in Denver, Colorado. In addition to seeing clients, she also provides ongoing supervision to new therapists entering the field. She and some cohorts teamed up to write a book about their process, and formed a business around this idea of preparing therapists for the reality of seeing clients in the mental health space.

As if that isn't enough to keep Khara busy, she also is the founder and executive director of Catalively. This non-profit was formed to engage people experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors through proper assessment to connect them with valuable resources to reduce risk.

While her experience is incredible, Jason and I both wanted to know how Khara manages to do all these things and still sleep at night. She candidly shares her encounters with burnout and tells of the lessons she learned through those valleys.

Jason and I were inspired by all the work Khara is doing, and especially by her care and concern for those struggling with suicidal thoughts.

Andi and I enjoyed a quiet hour to record this recap episode. Par the course for these episodes, Andi referenced her professional experience as she shared her thoughts on several social work & mental health related subjects. Our lovely cat friend Jack joined us part way through, as did our 13 year old son who came upstairs to say good night.

We had a great conversation about the role that doubt plays in faith, and had a pretty deep discussion about whether faith-based organizations should be able to discriminate against gay couples seeking to adopt. It is so much fun when Jason & I get to sit down and record an episode. This was no exception. Join us as we discuss a wide variety of topics, including (butt certainly not limited to) toilet talk, how to use a bidet, the existence of aliens, and so much more.  Midway through Jason's thimble-sized bladder ran out of room, so he abruptly left the studio while I was trying to introduce the next (relatively deep!) current event. -ben

Ben's friend and fellow UTM board member Megan DeWeerd joined us in studio for a discussion that leans pretty heavy on the "churchy" side. Even if you don't go to church, and even if you aren't a person of faith, you'll likely be intrigued by Megan's sheer openness and hope-filled outlook on life.

Tune in as we discuss the balancing act of caring for one another in the church with caring for those outside the church. Megan shares about a time in her life when she was "allergic" to all things Christian-ese and openly reflects on the challenges that almost divided her and her husband's marriage. We discuss what the church's relationship to our culture should be, and what the church looks like when it is functioning in a healthy manner.

This episode features music by Todd Agnew. His music has impacted Ben's life in a significant way. A portion of "My Jesus" was used under the terms of Fair Use copyright rules. The song's meaning was examined as it relates to the subject material of this podcast episode.

This episode is about as close to a campfire-side chat with incredible conversation between friends as you can get -- there was indeed a fire burning in the background, and we were lulled by the sounds of nature as we recorded. Listen in as Ben & Andi converse with Jason & Meaghan about what it's like to be married to a podcaster, answer questions from listeners, and reflect on the happenings of summer 2019.

Ben and Jason had the opportunity to sit down and chat, just like the first episodes of Threads. Ben didn't want to follow a format for their conversation, but Jason couldn't handle recording without an outline. So Ben put a loosey goosey outline together to guide them.

Even with an outline, hilarity and randomness ensued. Listen as Jason tells all about why he was jealous of Ben, and Ben spills the beans on how long it has been since he's seen the dentist. Jason thinks Ben likes getting "atta boys" and pats on the back from his posts on social media and in messaging apps. Ben isn't sure he agrees with that.

This episode, though slightly unstructured, certainly brought us into the deep end. By the time we pressed "Stop" to end the recording, we both felt encouraged and validated after having another honest conversation.

On Episode 20, we discussed the story of Sam, a transgender student at Byron Center High School. Much to our surprise, she reached out to us after hearing our show.

In our e-mail conversations, Sam had this to say:

"If I had just heard the segment about trans people, I might have been upset. But hearing the whole episode really helped to paint context and help me realize that you guys are not looking to my political statements or anything, you're truly just having an honest conversation which is incredible and very important in this polarized time so I just want to thank both of you for doing this podcast." We kick off episode 21 by sharing about our failures and victories over the last couple of weeks, along with a recap of our appearance on the Eric Zane Show Podcast. Then, we move into a fun segment about millennials, in which we did our best to give this generation the most fair and balanced treatment.

Our news segment was broken into 3 categories - good, bad, and ugly. That ugly story was a doozy. You'll have to listen for yourself!

We had some slight difference in opinion about a church that offers "heavy metal" services and whether or not it was appropriate to offer noon services to those who may have had too much to drink the night before.

To wrap things up, we each shared about one personal goal we were committing to between episodes. Stay tuned to find out how those go for us.

Happy New Year! I hope you all are enjoying the holidays with friends and family. I(Jason) had an amazing Christmas and Ben and I are excited for 2019.

We recorded this episode a few weeks ago but are just releasing it now. This episode doesn't follow our normal format, but a lighthearted but meaningful conversation about God, the church, and dealing with the hurts/pains/frustrations with the church. Ben had made a connection on Facebook with David Tisma. David was a former pastor at 2 churches and has a lot of insight on religion and the current state of the church today.

He also records his own podcast, but is currently on a hiatus. You can check it out here, An Open Letter.

Long Episode warning We had a our first guest in studio - Tyler Baum! Tyler is a very smart young man and brought lots of great insight to the show. Oh, did I mention he is our first super fan? He came up with the name of "Threadie."

Quick recap of things we talked about:

  1. Ben's son made a new friend after Ben encouraged him to hang out with "good kids."
  2. Jason puked in the bushes while waiting for the kids to get on the bus.
  3. Tyler enjoying the holidays with the family.
  4. Ben lost his patience with daughter (again.)
  5. Jason lacking an "attitude of gratitude"
  6. Tyler botched wife's b-day
  7. Lauren Daigle & a lack of discernment among American Christians: Lauren received some hate for being on the Ellen show and answering a question about gay people. Lauren is a Christian singer who is gaining traction in the mainstream music scene.

On this episode, we focus on the theme of fatherhood. We share about our dads, and talk about the kind of dads we want to be. We discuss the impact that absent fathers have on their families and talk about how our dads’ parenting styles impacted us. We also took into consideration what happened in our dads’ lives that caused them to parent the way they did -- or didn’t.

We close out by sharing some “dad tips” that will hopefully inspire you to be a better dad (or mom!)

In this episode, Ben was a bit hyped on energy drinks that Jason got him hooked on. We both shared about different organizations that we serve as board members for. We talked about yet another snarky fight between the two of us, and even discussed evolution. We celebrated our kids' big victories and shared about our failures. Somehow we even managed to get on the topic of religious clothing like turbans.

Want to learn more about the organizations we serve for? Check out UTM (Ben) and YoungLives (Jason)!

We had some special guests this week.......Our wives! Ben's and Jason's family were together over the Labor Weekend up at Jason's cabin and decided to record Threads!

We had some fun at the beginning and then we thought we were done but the wives were not going to have it. So we recorded for 30 more minutes!

Enjoy!

This was a great show. We even had some tears! Ben spoke of his loss of his 3 foster kids years ago after they went back to their birth parents. Jason talked about his struggling relationship with his dad.

Thanks for joining us on Threads episode 4! We're one episode away from being listed on Spotify. On this show, we switched things up a bit in our format (which was difficult for Ben) but ended up having some pretty deep conversations. We covered a healthy portion of God stuff, talked about things that overwhelm us, and shared about some deep family stuff. Enjoy! Check out our website || Connect with us on Facebook

SHOW NOTES:

MATTHEW 7:6 - Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Thanks for downloading and listening to the third episode of our podcast! In this episode, we cover a barrage of random topics ranging from failure, guns, alcohol, and even space travel. One of the questions we wrestle with is, "why is it so hard for guys to talk to their significant others about faith experiences?"

Listen in and find out how all these threads tie together. This is about life, unfiltered.

Send us an e-mail at hello@threadspodcast.com and we promise to write back! You can also interact with us between episodes on our Facebook page.

Please consider reviewing us at iTunes, PodBean, etc. so that we can continue to get the word out about Threads.

Thanks for being a part of this experiment. We appreciate you.
