When you sit down to start your wedding planning, you’re probably not dying to dive into the logistics first. Maybe you’re daydreaming about flower arrangements or a crisp fall color palette. Maybe you know one of the first decisions you need to make is the venue, so you’ve started researching and requesting information from some of the top wedding venues in your area.
While none of this is “bad”, today we’re diving into what you ACTUALLY need to do first - which is decide who you want to invite (and what that number means for your wedding venue's maximum capacity)! As a wedding planner, this is NOT something I can do for you. And while your guest list may not sound like the sexiest thing, honestly, it’s one of the tasks couples hate doing, you do want to know your number before you start going on venue tours (or even finalizing your budget). I can't wait to share some tips with you today!

Want your wedding to feel luxurious? Then you need to incorporate all FIVE senses into your wedding design. Today, loverves, we are talking all about the sense that is almost never taken into account, even though it can make such a difference in your wedding day (and how people remember your wedding day).
Today we are talking about the sense of smell. And more specifically, how you can incorporate smells and fragrances into your wedding day in a meaningful and impactful way. How can you avoid going overboard? While most couples planning a wedding have likely thought about choosing a wedding day perfume or cologne, as your favorite wedding planner up here in Upstate New York, I’m here to tell you that we can go so much deeper than that.

When you're picking out your wedding decor, it’s important to pick design elements that serve a purpose. When I design weddings for my couples, I want to make sure that the elements we include in the design or the details we pick for the wedding decor have meaning. They weave little tidbits of information that I’ve pulled from the couple’s story into the overall day.
In this episode, I break down the design process into 4 basic steps:

So it’s important to spend time putting together a solid day-of timeline.

Believe it or not, not all couples who get married go on a honeymoon. Work, financial, and career commitments, among other things cause couples to skip the honeymoon altogether.
While you might think that’s not a big deal, skipping the honeymoon can actually have a significantly negative affect on your marriage and your relationship.
On today’s episode, we’re talking to a real expert on the topic of honeymoons, paying for the honeymoon, and wedding registries in general.

I know these professionals have good intentions, I believe that they couldn’t be more wrong - and it’s not just because we’re planners! Have you invited your family and friends to be members of your wedding party yet? If not, today’s episode is for you. In this episode, I wanted to make a case for a smaller wedding party. Today we’re interviewing another one of my favorite couples of 2021. And this couple I worked with for two whole years because they postponed their wedding from 2020 to 2021. They’re a favorite couple of mine because they’re super fun, put their complete trust in me, and totally leaned into what makes them unique and different to truly personalize their day. If you are looking to customize your wedding, making it unique and memorable to you, this post is for you.

When couples plan their weddings, many hope that their day is relaxed and stress-free. Many will say the last thing they want is "wedding drama." However, as a wedding planner, part of my job is to choreograph moments of drama or excitement for your guests on the wedding day. This can be done in many different ways, one of them is with wedding music.
In Episode 54, we continue our conversation with Eddie and Caleb, who experienced firsthand the turmoil and drama that comes with wedding planning. From wedding vendors breaking contracts and excluding their wedding planner, to planning a wedding during a pandemic, it seemed like wedding drama followed Eddie and Caleb could not catch a break.
Today we hear about this drama and how Caleb and Eddie dealt with it. In addition, to talk about what went wrong, we talk about what went really well, including their choice of wedding music and how it created excitement and the "right" drama on their wedding day.

It's no secret, with wedding planning can come drama, challenges, and sometimes disappointments. While I work to help couples plan their wedding as effortlessly as possible, sometimes it's just not that simple!
In Part 1, we talk about what it was like to plan a DIY wedding, when they hit their breaking point and decided to hire a planner, and what they originally envisioned for their wedding design.
As a gay couple, we also touch on unique issues they encountered while planning a wedding as a gay couple in a heteronormative industry. Throughout our time together, they acted with class and remained positive, and I was eager to share their story with all of you.
If you're planning your wedding as a gay couple or if you're a wedding vendor trying to learn how you can make your business more inclusive, you might be wondering:

With the seemingly never ending pandemic, more and more couples have had to rethink their wedding plans. Health guidelines, venue restrictions, and vendor flexibility are all obstacles that make it difficult to book and plan a wedding during this time. Especially for destination weddings, there is a LOT of hesitation for planning a ceremony this far in advance. As I wrote about in Wedding 2022 Trends, backyard weddings have greatly increased in their popularity. If you want a plan wedding that can happen regardless of COVID guidelines, maybe a backyard wedding is your move! While hosting can seem daunting, you should ask yourself:
Keep reading to find out about a real life couples' experience successfully turning their backyard, into a dream wedding venue!

Through bouquets, boutonnieres, and arrangements, whether your wedding vibe is dramatic and bold, or whimsical and delicate, the floral decor is going to be a major determinant. Perhaps couples don't immediately think about the massive role (and price point) floral decor play in the ambiance of their wedding. Furthermore, in the era of sustainability and eco-friendly alternatives, it would be ignorant to ignore the wastefulness that comes from wedding flowers, as most are thrown out the next day. SO, couples may be asking themselves:
If you all follow my wedding planning company’s account at Verve Event Co. , you all know I love beautiful floral arrangements. So I’m really excited for today’s conversation with Amanda and Meghan from the Silk Stem Collective.

It is no secret. After the past two years of pivoting and rescheduling, downsizing, canceling, and social distancing, couples are excited and anxious to finally get married. There are a ton of couples who got engaged years ago, and are only now getting married. Consequently, everyone is itching to have their special moment with families and friends. So today, I am sharing my 2022 wedding trend predictions.
Vendors are included in this too. Some of us have couples that have been waiting to get married for 2 years, which means they’ve been planning for three!
Suffice it to say, 2022 is going to be an explosive year for weddings. It’s also going to be a reflection of what’s currently happening in society. So, I’m excited to share with you our predictions for trends in 2022.
These predictions are based on a little research and a lot of observations from what I’m seeing and experiencing in the industry.
Full disclosure, these are still opinions, and nothing is guaranteed. I’m going to start out by looking at what I predicted in 2021 really quickly and seeing if I think any of those trends will apply in 2022, and then move on to new trends for 2022.
But I have to make sure I say that you should plan a wedding that YOU want. If you feel pressured to do something because other people are doing it, let them have it. Your wedding is an expression of you and your partner at this moment in time.

How much is a wedding videographer and should you hire them for your wedding?? This is a common question couples find themselves asking when they're considering whether to hire a wedding videographer. They also ask themselves:
This is one of my favorite episodes so far on the podcast because it dives into a really important topic that many couples are unsure of and one I feel pretty strongly about. Whether you've already hired your wedding videographer or you're deciding between whether or not to have one, I challenge you to listen to this episode and see if it changes your mind about hiring a wedding videographer.

On today’s episode, I’m giving you my honest opinion on who you should and SHOULD NOT invite.
As a warning, this episode might annoy or irritate some people, and you could strongly disagree. And that’s totally fine.
But I want to make this a safe space where you know I’m going to be candid with you, and not just tell you what you want to hear, even if it’s an unpopular opinion.

Make some rules about who you invite and don’t invite and stick to them. Be consistent with who receives a plus-one, or which kids may attend.

TODAY we’re talking about one of my passions, wedding design, specifically, the 5 design questions every couple should ask potential wedding designers.
But before we get too far ahead, let’s back up a little bit.
For couples that are just getting started and people in the industry who aren’t used to working with an event designer, can you break it down for us what you mean when we say “wedding design” or “event design”?
One of the biggest reasons weddings are beautiful, cohesive events is they have an amazing design team bringing the couple’s vision to life. And Gabrielle and her team are no exception. If you’re in the south - definitely check them out!

That’s it for today’s episode. I’ll talk to you again in our next episode with Cindy Coy from Harborview Studios. Whether or not you’ve hired your wedding videographer, or if you’ve decided against it, I challenge you to listen to this episode and see if you still think you don’t need one. I think you’ll change your mind. The episode is going to be that powerful!
This episode is a follow-up to Episode 36: 6 Things to Do Before You Get Engaged. The time when you become engaged is a roller coaster of emotions. You feel excitement and joy, but possibly also overwhelmed by the many questions people will ask you about your coming nuptials. In today's post, I'm sharing with you what you should think about first, second, and third so that you're able to enjoy the wedding planning and feel in control.
These 6 items will give you a great foundation to help you tackle all those wedding planning decisions. As long as you keep them in mind, you will be refreshed, relaxed, and ready to party when your wedding day finally arrives.
If you have questions about any of this, I would love to know. I’m happy to expand on particular topics if you think it’s helpful.

In Episode 38, I’m interviewing Gabrielle Mecca of Edge Design group on the 5 questions you need to ask when you interview potential wedding designers. This is the first episode in a mini-series I’m doing on must-ask questions for potential vendors.
Today's episode comes from you all, my listeners! I’ve heard from several of you that you’re waiting for the proposal. You're not officially engaged, but you know or hope it's coming soon, so you're looking around, getting some ideas, etc. You’ve been in a relationship for a while, you’ve had the talk, maybe looked at some rings, so you’re just starting to get a feel for this whole wedding planning thing.
NO, I do NOT think you’re crazy. My now-husband and I TOTALLY talked about some of our wedding ideas before we got engaged. We had fun fantasizing and dreaming!
So what should you do now? Below are the five things to do before you get engaged.
If you have questions about any of this, I would love to know. I can even do a deep dive into one of these topics if you think it’s helpful.
Please review the podcast on Apple Podcasts and write your questions in the review and I’ll incorporate them into a future episode. If there are specific guests you want me to interview or topics you want me to cover in a future episode, let me know who that is in your review, too!
In Episode 37 I’m diving into the next step in the journey, which is what the heck do you do after you get engaged!
In today’s episode, I dive deep into why someone would or would NOT hire a wedding planner.
You might think it’s interesting that I’m a wedding planner that chose to record an episode on why someone might not want to work with a wedding planner.
But I think it’s a question that a lot of couples and families grapple with. Who should or should not hire a wedding planner? Why hire a wedding planner? Why do we need one?
What does a wedding planner even do?
Will they be able to execute the vision we have in our heads?
What will they do that I can’t?
Would I get along with a wedding planner or will they control too much?
These are all great questions and I’m going to answer them in today’s episode.
I get a little heated in some parts because, as you can imagine, I’m pretty passionate about this topic.
Also, this is the LAST episode of Season 1 of the Ask the Planner podcast. I’m going to take the next few months to focus on my clients and make sure the wedding season is the best one yet.
I’m also going to be interviewing new guests and getting ready for an amazing Season 2 that will be back in October of 2021.
If you just discovered this podcast, I encourage you to start with episode 1 and binge the rest of the episodes. I’ve covered so many topics already in 35 episodes and had some really awesome guests already. And I’m excited to bring it with Season 2.

Who's excited to plan the "average" wedding of their dreams?! Nobody.
How many times have you read an article that starts with something like, "On average . . . couples spend x amount on their wedding." Or, the average couple spends x amount on wedding flowers or wedding photography.
I don't know about you, but I'm not excited to plan someone's average wedding. I don't think you've been dying to plan an average wedding either.
So why should you expect to spend an "average" amount on your wedding vendors? All those inspirational images you're saving on Instagram or pinning on Pinterest were not from "average" weddings. Just saying.
Want a better way of putting together your wedding budget? Visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator**.
When putting together your budget, ask yourselves, "What are our priorities?" Some couples really value aesthetics, such as stationery, the tabletop, and decor. Others prioritize having a really good live band. It all comes down to what has the greatest impact for you and structuring the budget around that. If you think about it, when you go out for a nice meal, how much are you spending per person with alcohol? Think of your wedding as a nice meal, but you have to pay for the venue, invitations, and even the flowers, tables, and chairs. The costs quickly begin to add up.**

According to The Knot, 45% of couples spend more on their budget than they originally planned by $7,000. The best way to avoid this kind of budget creep is to have realistic expectations about your wedding budget - and that doesn't mean using a wedding budget calculator on a website like The Knot or Wedding Wire. In the next set of tips, I'm going to expose the lies behind wedding budget calculators.
Like Lie #1, A Magical calculator can predict how much you should spend on your wedding.
I don't care how good their algorithm is or whatever they use to calculate your budget. An online calculator can't accurately predict how much you should spend on each item. There's no one-size fits all.
It just doesn't exist. To find out more on what's a better predictor of your wedding budget, visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator**.

Today’s topic is a BTS in how I stay organized with mine and my couple’s to-do list.
I use Trello to both communicate with my couples and track all of our tasks. I like Trello because the basic version is free so anyone can use it, and it has a lot of features that make project management and organization fun and super easy.
You could also do a lot of this with other project management tools like Asana, which I use in my business, or a Google spreadsheet.
**But after you listen to this episode, I think you’re really going to want to switch to Trello.
Why Trello Beats Spreadsheets to Organize Your Wedding To-Do List
1. STREAMLINED
2. INTERACTIVE & COLLABORATE
3. COLOR CODING BY TASKS OR CATEGORIES
4. SETTING DUE DATES AND REMINDERS
5. CHECKLISTS
6. DEPOSITORY FOR ALL THE THINGS
7. PLAN FROM ANYWHERE - MOBILE OR DESKTOP**
And, if you want to make your life SUPER EASY, you can visit my new Resources shop and purchase the Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist, which lists out everything you need to be doing month by month. And when I say everything, I mean everything. That planner you bought off Amazon or the one you’re using from The Knot has NOTHING on this checklist. I even have sub-checklists in some of the tasks with even more little pointers to help you keep track of your to-do’s.
But now I’m getting ahead of myself.
You can find the checklist at https://shop.verveeventco.com.

NOTES:
On average, my couples hire 12-15 service providers, depending on their venue and the level of specialization. These vendors can include the planner, venue, caterer, photographer, hair & makeup, stationer, florist, tabletop rentals, videographer, lighting designer, transportation, entertainment, officiant, cocktail hour musician, ceremony musicians. Some people hire live entertainment acts, food trucks, and even people just to provide ice. That's a lot of coordinating!

TODAY we’re talking about booking basic wedding dessert knowledge that all couples need to know.
This is such a great topic because dessert really rounds out the guest’s culinary experience at the wedding, and is going to be one of their last memories of your wedding, but a lot of couples think it’s just about tasting cake and that’s it.

Did you know that most weddings have an average of 12 wedding vendors, but many of mine hire 30 or more. And then, each vendor breaks up their payments into at least 2 or 3 different installments. That’s easily 24-30 different payments you need to keep track of.
In today’s episode, I give you some quick tips on how to make sure you don’t miss any of those payments and you send the right amount to the correct vendor.

Your budget is your spending plan for the whole wedding. It’s an expression of your priorities. If you don’t talk about it and put together a solid budget early in the process, you’re either going to run out of money or spend more than you planned.
This episode will be helpful no matter where you are in the wedding planning process. If you’re just starting out, it will help make sure you have a good plan for your spending. If you’ve booked a lot of your vendors already, it will still be helpful because it will help you prioritize what’s left of your budget.

Wedding Budget Lie #2: Every wedding vendor's price will fall between a specific range.
Guys, there are a lot of items that will affect how much a vendor charges - that's the beauty of capitalism. You have a choice as to how much you want to pay and they have a choice as to how much they need to charge! A couple of things that will definitely affect this will be their level of experience, quality of work, location, and the specific services you book.
To find out better predictors of how much your vendors will actually cost, visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator.
Your wedding day timeline is used by all of your vendors to understand the flow of the wedding. It also can make or break your day because if things fall behind, it has a domino effect and the rest of the day can get really off the rails if something goes wrong. So it’s important to spend time putting together a solid day-of timeline.

Today we’re talking about how to pick the right wedding photographer for you and what criteria you should be using to evaluate your prospective photographers.
This is such a great topic because I know so many couples book their wedding photographer first after the venue and wedding planner. Sometimes even before their planner. But they don’t have a lot of experience booking a vendor at this point, so I think a lot of this will apply to booking other vendors, too.

NOTES:
There are so many wedding photographers out there. It's hard to know which one will be the best fit for you. In this case, Instagram is your friend. Start with a local hashtag such as #hudsonvalleyweddingphotographer or #newyorkweddingphotographer. Look at people's portfolios and try to understand what you like and don't like about their photos. All photographers have different editing styles. Some like their photos to look lighter and brighter. Others like their photos to be a little warmer. Some like their photos darker and moodier. If you don't know what you like, knowing what you don't like will still be helpful. Interview your top 3 prospects either in person or with a video call. They'll be with you for the majority of the day and capturing your most intimate moments, so you want to make sure you're not just comfortable with them, but love them too.

Anyway, on with the tip!
Today’s tip is a compilation of my past tips regarding your cake and desserts. It’s a little preview of what we’ll be talking about in our next episode when we resume after the holidays. Enjoy!**
Tip 016: Don't Forget Your Cake Stand
**When it comes to your wedding cake, don't forget to think about how the cake will be displayed. Ask the cake baker, What color and dimensions will the cake board be? That's the piece of wood your cake sits on. You want to make sure your board matches the color of your cake stand and that the cake stand you have is the proper size. If you're buying the cake stand, make sure you get it well in advance. You want to make sure it's sturdy enough to support the weight of a wedding cake AND it's wide enough. Most cake stands that you would buy "off the shelf" are smaller and not properly sized for a wedding cake.
Tip 017: Avoid These Unique Wedding Cake Flavors
More cake tips! I'm all for unique and personalized food, but be wary of asking for cake fillings made of anything that is seasonal, such as fruit. Also, temper your expectations if you're asking for something exotic, like a mango curd and you don't live in a climate that grows mangoes. We had a mango curd filling in our cake that was PHENOMENAL. But our baker warned us that we might need to go to Plan B if she couldn't get mangoes that were the right variety and ripeness when our wedding came. Luckily, she did and it was AMAZING, but I knew she was a little stressed about it. (Shout-out to Anita Gupta of Maliha Creations in Charlottesville, VA!)
Tip 018: How to Make Your Wedding Cake Stand Out
This is my last cake tip for the week. Promise! Instead of serving a traditional, round 3-tiered cake, consider changing it up a bit. Make the tiers different heights for a more modern and artistic look. For example, make the bottom tier a little shorter and fat, make the middle tier taller and make the top tier in between. Or even make the cake asymmetrical. This will make your cake stand out from all the other cake your guests have seen and tasted.**
On today’s episode, I’m forecasting some really fun and different trends for what we can expect in 2021 in weddings. 2020 was kind of a dumpster fire, and I think we’re all ready for something different. Read the episode show notes at http://verveeventco.com/7 .

If you've been following me on social media, you know that the dinner table is one of my favorite ways to get creative with the decor. I love using unique media for placecards, like luggage tags, scrolls, fruit, or even napkins. I also like using a colored napkin tied with flowers or ribbon to add some texture. Finally, printing your menus on something other than paper is a fun way to add an element of surprise to the table. I also like having different looks for the tables. For example, you could have one linen for your rectangular tables and another for your rounds. Try to make them similar in terms of material or pattern so there's still some cohesion. For more ideas on wedding table decor, including the actual candlesticks I use all the time, visit my Resources page at https://verveeventco.com/resources
