When you're picking out your wedding decor, it’s important to pick design elements that serve a purpose. When I design weddings for my couples, I want to make sure that the elements we include in the design or the details we pick for the wedding decor have meaning. They weave little tidbits of information that I’ve pulled from the couple’s story into the overall day.

In this episode, I break down the design process into 4 basic steps:

  • 1: Find Your Inspiration [8:18]
  • 2: Pinterest Purge [17:14]
  • 3: Pick Your Theme [20:02]
  • 4: Create Your Mood Board or Wedding Design [24:26]

Your wedding day timeline is used by all of your vendors to understand the flow of the wedding. It also can make or break your day because if things fall behind, it has a domino effect and the rest of the day can get really off the rails if something goes wrong. So it’s important to spend time putting together a solid day-of timeline.

I’m going to break down the process for you in 7 simple steps

  • Step 1: Pick the Start time for your Reception and Ceremony
  • Step 2: Choose Your Reception End Time
  • Step 3: Build in time for Photos
  • Step 4: Choose a Getting Ready Start Time
  • Step 5: Plan Out Your Dinner
  • Step 6: Build in Transition Time
  • Step 7: Add in Your Vendor Setup & Departure Times

And, if you want to make your life SUPER EASY, you can visit my new Resources shop to download pre-made timelines that are beautiful and all ready for you to tweak and personalize to your specific day. Today’s topic is is really near and dear to my heart and also kind of a hot button issue for me. But I promise to be as bi-partisan for both sides so you get a balanced perspective.

If one of the reasons below is why you're considering not hiring a wedding planner, then definitely have a listen on what I think about that.

5 REASONS YOU THINK YOU DON'T NEED TO HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER:

  • One or both of you have a background in event planning. [07:05]
  • You have a hard time giving up control and trusting others. [9:26]
  • You're planning a “simple wedding.” [11:00]
  • A friend or family member says they want to help you so they can get wedding planning experience. [14:22]
  • You want to be the one to tell everyone what to do on the wedding day. [17:50]

5 REASONS WHY SOMEONE WOULD HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER:

  • One or both of you work in hospitality and you know how much work goes into producing a well-run event. [18:44]
  • You want to trust a professional with your investment. [19:15]
  • Neither of you wants your day to feel like a generic, cookie-cutter wedding. [21:00]
  • Being able to enjoy the wedding planning experience is important. [23:00]
  • You also want your guests to enjoy the wedding too! [25:47]

Today on Ask the Planner Podcast, we’re talking about something that comes much later in the planning process but needs to be budgeted for and confirmed much earlier on. Flower Preservation. If you’re anything like me, you LOVE flowers and you want your wedding day flowers to live on after your wedding because they were so beautiful.

However, flower preservation isn’t something you can easily add at the last-minute because flower preservation takes planning AND you have a limited window of opportunity before your flowers start to wilt.

If you’re sentimental like me or you want to appreciate the beauty of your day long after everyone’s gone home, you’re going to want to listen to today’s episode.

This episode was packed with so many amazing tips from our guest.

  • Meet Lauren Muldoon [03:44]
  • What exactly is flower preservation? [05:32]
  • Can you tell us a little bit about the process? [06:44]
  • If a couple is considering having their flowers preserved from their wedding, what should they be thinking about? [10:45]
  • Can old, air-dried flowers be preserved? What else can be preserved? [13:35]
  • How many flowers do couples need to give you to ensure they have enough for you to make a nice piece? [15:40]
  • When do you recommend couples reach out to you or another preservationist to ensure you have availability to preserve their flowers? [19:38]
  • What advice do you have for couples if they don’t think about flower preservation until after the wedding? [22:32]
  • Do you only work with couples that are local? Can couples ship their flowers to you? [26:10]
  • What can couples expect to spend if they’re considering having their flowers preserved in this way? [27:49]
  • What’s one thing you want to debunk about the flower preservation? [30:10]
  • This or That. [32:05]

Have you invited your family and friends to be members of your wedding party yet? If not, today’s episode is for you. In this episode, I wanted to make a case for a smaller wedding party. As a luxury wedding planner in Upstate NY, I always love to see trends unfold in real-time and of course, have an opinion on them. Over the last two years, couples have naturally been drawn toward smaller wedding parties and smaller guest counts. However, as guest counts increase again, wedding party sizes seem to increase right along with them!

While I love a big wedding and jam-packed dance floor, today I’m going to make a case for a smaller wedding party. If you are newly engaged and haven’t chosen your wedding party yet, today I’m sharing 6 things you might not have considered yet.

To fast-forward to a specific part of the podcast episode, check out the timestamps below:

  • Reason #1 - You’ll save money on stuff that doesn’t matter so that you can splurge on the stuff that does [3:20]
  • Reason #2 - It enhances your wedding day experience by making it feel more intimate and less chaotic trying to do all the things with all the people [7:00]
  • Reason #3 - It makes your getting-ready suite feel a lot roomier and more comfortable [8:15]
  • Reason #4 - You can start getting ready at a more leisurely time later in the day and worry less about having half a dozen hair and makeup artists in your schedule [10:05]
  • Reason #5 -You don’t feel like you’re herding cats on your wedding day. From photos to getting from one location to the next, a smaller group always seems to know exactly where they’re supposed to be. [12:20]
  • Reason #6 -Lastly, you can spend extra time loving on the people you care about the most. [13:42]

When couples plan their weddings, many hope that their day is relaxed and stress-free. Many will say the last thing they want is "wedding drama." However, as a wedding planner, part of my job is to choreograph moments of drama or excitement for your guests on the wedding day. This can be done in many different ways, one of them is with wedding music.

In Episode 54, we continue our conversation with Eddie and Caleb, who experienced firsthand the turmoil and drama that comes with wedding planning. From wedding vendors breaking contracts and excluding their wedding planner, to planning a wedding during a pandemic, it seemed like wedding drama followed Eddie and Caleb could not catch a break.

Today we hear about this drama and how Caleb and Eddie dealt with it. In addition, to talk about what went wrong, we talk about what went really well, including their choice of wedding music and how it created excitement and the "right" drama on their wedding day.

Here's a summary of our interview:

  • Rehearsal dinner troubles [7:33]
  • Why the planner was excluded in the planning process? [12:49]
  • Vendors being stretched thin due to pandemic? [18:10]

  • The problems with heteronormative wedding music [36:27]
  • Who takes who's last name? [43:03]

As a gay couple, we also touch on unique issues they encountered while planning a wedding as a gay couple in a heteronormative industry. Throughout our time together, they acted with class and remained positive, and I was eager to share their story with all of you.

If you're planning your wedding as a gay couple or if you're a wedding vendor trying to learn how you can make your business more inclusive, you might be wondering:

It is no secret. After the past two years of pivoting and rescheduling, downsizing, canceling, and social distancing, couples are excited and anxious to finally get married.  There are a ton of couples who got engaged years ago, and are only now getting married.  Consequently, everyone is itching to have their special moment with families and friends.  So today, I am sharing my 2022 wedding trend predictions.

Vendors are included in this too. Some of us have couples that have been waiting to get married for 2 years, which means they’ve been planning for three!

Suffice it to say, 2022 is going to be an explosive year for weddings. It’s also going to be a reflection of what’s currently happening in society. So, I’m excited to share with you our predictions for trends in 2022.

These predictions are based on a little research and a lot of observations from what I’m seeing and experiencing in the industry.

Full disclosure, these are still opinions, and nothing is guaranteed. I’m going to start out by looking at what I predicted in 2021 really quickly and seeing if I think any of those trends will apply in 2022, and then move on to new trends for 2022.

But I have to make sure I say that you should plan a wedding that YOU want. If you feel pressured to do something because other people are doing it, let them have it. Your wedding is an expression of you and your partner at this moment in time.

Your wedding officiant is one of the most important people at your wedding ceremony after you! But like many couples, you might feel lost when starting to put together your wedding ceremony and will need to rely heavily on your wedding officiant.

We read about celebrity engagements, and hear about their weddings on social media. But, rarely do we think about what we can learn from these over-the-top weddings.

So, today we're interviewing a very special personality in the wedding and entertainment industry to get the inside scoop on one of the most recent celebrity weddings, the union of Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton to her longterm boyfriend, Carter Reum.

Rev. Clint Hufft is the officiant to the stars. Consequently, the ceremony was a social media phenomenon - reporters producing news articles, paparazzi publishing photos, and Peacock TV network broadcasting "Paris in Love," the newest TV production. Furthermore, he performed the wedding ceremony of the first Bachelorette couple Trista ad Ryan Sutter. So, people planning their own wedding may also ask themselves:

How much is a wedding videographer and should you hire them for your wedding?? This is a common question couples find themselves asking when they're considering whether to hire a wedding videographer. They also ask themselves:

  • Do I need a wedding videographer?
  • What's the average cost of a wedding videographer?
  • How much does a wedding videographer cost?
  • Is a wedding videographer worth it?

This is one of my favorite episodes so far on the podcast because it dives into a really important topic that many couples are unsure of and one I feel pretty strongly about. Whether you've already hired your wedding videographer or you're deciding between whether or not to have one, I challenge you to listen to this episode and see if it changes your mind about hiring a wedding videographer.

On today’s episode, I’m giving you my honest opinion on who you should and SHOULD NOT invite.

As a warning, this episode might annoy or irritate some people, and you could strongly disagree. And that’s totally fine.

But I want to make this a safe space where you know I’m going to be candid with you, and not just tell you what you want to hear, even if it’s an unpopular opinion.

This is another short but super-packed episode, so let’s get to it.

I want to remind you that your wedding is a very important day.

I want to make sure you spend it with the people you care for and want to connect with. If you were on the fence about inviting someone, I hope this gives you clarity and takes away the guilt from enjoying your wedding, whatever size it is.

Make some rules about who you invite and don’t invite and stick to them. Be consistent with who receives a plus-one, or which kids may attend.

If you need help organizing your guest list, get a free copy of my Guest List Template at verveeventco.com/guestlist.

In Episode 41, I’m interviewing Dana Arnold of Dana Arnold Photography on all things related to your engagement photo session, so make sure you catch that episode. She shares a lot of great tips, from where to have your shoot, what to wear, where to shop, and so much more.

TODAY we’re talking about one of my passions, wedding design, specifically, the 5 design questions every couple should ask potential wedding designers.

But before we get too far ahead, let’s back up a little bit.

For couples that are just getting started and people in the industry who aren’t used to working with an event designer, can you break it down for us what you mean when we say “wedding design” or “event design”?

One of the biggest reasons weddings are beautiful, cohesive events is they have an amazing design team bringing the couple’s vision to life. And Gabrielle and her team are no exception. If you’re in the south - definitely check them out!

For the show notes to the episode, visit verveeventco.com/38.

And if you prefer to create your wedding design on your own, my wedding mood board in the Wedding Planning Template Shop will walk you through how to do just that. Visit shop.verveeventco.com to check it out.

Finally, please don’t forget to leave a 5-start review for the podcast in Apple Podcasts. If you liked this format, let me know. If you prefer we change it up and do something else. Please include that in your review and we will make sure to adjust. And don’t forget to leave your Instagram handle in your review so I can follow you back!

That’s it for today’s episode. I’ll talk to you again in our next episode with Cindy Coy from Harborview Studios. Whether or not you’ve hired your wedding videographer, or if you’ve decided against it, I challenge you to listen to this episode and see if you still think you don’t need one. I think you’ll change your mind. The episode is going to be that powerful!

This episode is a follow-up to Episode 36: 6 Things to Do Before You Get Engaged. The time when you become engaged is a roller coaster of emotions. You feel excitement and joy, but possibly also overwhelmed by the many questions people will ask you about your coming nuptials. In today's post, I'm sharing with you what you should think about first, second, and third so that you're able to enjoy the wedding planning and feel in control.

  1. Enjoy your engagement! Drink that champagne and have fun.
  2. Pick 3 words to describe your dream wedding to guide you through the decision-making process
  3. Pick 3 words to describe how you want to feel during the wedding planning process. These will also help you gain focus when you start to feel overwhelmed.
  4. Pick 3 goals you want to focus on for the wedding
  5. Discuss your guest list and budget with your partner
  6. Seriously consider hiring a wedding planner!

These 6 items will give you a great foundation to help you tackle all those wedding planning decisions. As long as you keep them in mind, you will be refreshed, relaxed, and ready to party when your wedding day finally arrives.

If you have questions about any of this, I would love to know. I’m happy to expand on particular topics if you think it’s helpful.

Leave a review of the podcast on Apple Podcasts and write your questions in the review and I’ll incorporate them into a future episode. If there are specific guests you want me to interview, let me know who that is in your review, too!

Finally, you can also always send me a DM me on IG at @asktheplannerpodcast.

In Episode 38, I’m interviewing Gabrielle Mecca of Edge Design group on the 5 questions you need to ask when you interview potential wedding designers. This is the first episode in a mini-series I’m doing on must-ask questions for potential vendors.

Today's episode comes from you all, my listeners! I’ve heard from several of you that you’re waiting for the proposal. You're not officially engaged, but you know or hope it's coming soon, so you're looking around, getting some ideas, etc. You’ve been in a relationship for a while, you’ve had the talk, maybe looked at some rings, so you’re just starting to get a feel for this whole wedding planning thing.

NO, I do NOT think you’re crazy. My now-husband and I TOTALLY talked about some of our wedding ideas before we got engaged. We had fun fantasizing and dreaming!

So what should you do now? Below are the five things to do before you get engaged.

  • Think about your guest list.
  • Put together a budget range that you’re comfortable spending on the wedding
  • Decide a part of the country or state where you want to get married.
  • Research and reach out to wedding planners.
  • Look at wedding venues.
  • Save inspiration to a Pinterest board.

If you have questions about any of this, I would love to know. I can even do a deep dive into one of these topics if you think it’s helpful.

Please review the podcast on Apple Podcasts and write your questions in the review and I’ll incorporate them into a future episode. If there are specific guests you want me to interview or topics you want me to cover in a future episode, let me know who that is in your review, too!

In Episode 37 I’m diving into the next step in the journey, which is what the heck do you do after you get engaged!

In today’s episode, I dive deep into why someone would or would NOT hire a wedding planner.

You might think it’s interesting that I’m a wedding planner that chose to record an episode on why someone might not want to work with a wedding planner.

But I think it’s a question that a lot of couples and families grapple with. Who should or should not hire a wedding planner? Why hire a wedding planner? Why do we need one?

What does a wedding planner even do?

Will they be able to execute the vision we have in our heads?

What will they do that I can’t?

Would I get along with a wedding planner or will they control too much?

These are all great questions and I’m going to answer them in today’s episode.

I get a little heated in some parts because, as you can imagine, I’m pretty passionate about this topic.

Also, this is the LAST episode of Season 1 of the Ask the Planner podcast. I’m going to take the next few months to focus on my clients and make sure the wedding season is the best one yet.

I’m also going to be interviewing new guests and getting ready for an amazing Season 2 that will be back in October of 2021.

If you just discovered this podcast, I encourage you to start with episode 1 and binge the rest of the episodes. I’ve covered so many topics already in 35 episodes and had some really awesome guests already. And I’m excited to bring it with Season 2.

If there are specific guests you want me to interview or topics you want me to cover or questions I should answer, PLEASE DM me on Instagram at Asktheplannerpodcast or email me at asktheplannerpodcast@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you!

Following up on Tip 32, today's last-minute details tips focus on supplies, back-up plans, and contingencies.

  2. Put aside sentimental objects that you'd like included with your "details shots" and put them all together for your photographer to shoot at one time
  3. Pack a good emergency/supply kit, which includes tape, fishing wire, needle and thread, extra black socks, floral wire, post-its, sharpies, scissors, bandaids, mints, and dental floss.
  4. Double-check the weather forecast and see if it's going to affect any of your locations.

NOTES:
Floral can take up a big part of your budget, so it's important to ask the right questions at the beginning. These questions include:

  1. What's the setup/take-down feed and what services does it include?
  2. Does this estimate include anyone moving arrangements from one site to another?
  3. Does this estimate include any vessels to keep or do we need to return them all? If so, by when do they need to be returned?
  4. Are the inspiration images in your proposal accurate in terms of scale or would mine be bigger or smaller?

Today’s topic is important because your food and alcohol take up a huge percentage of your budget. Depending on your total budget, it can be 30-45%!

Putting together your wedding menu and figuring out the logistics of your food, alcohol, and catering can be pretty intricate and requires a lot of thought and attention. This part of your wedding planning takes more than just tasting food and deciding what you like and don’t like.

Whether you’re searching for a caterer or you’ve already booked one and signed the contract, this episode will give you a lot to think about and help you decide just what kind of meal you want to serve and the type of caterer you want to work with.

Whether you’re having a rustic backyard wedding or a formal, elegant dinner in a ballroom, all these questions will apply.

Some of these questions I share with you in one of my products in the Resource Shop - the Wedding Vendor Email Templates and Interview Questions. But this episode talks specifically about catering questions.

However, if you’ve ever wondered what questions you should be asking a specific vendor, knowing there are lots of important things you might be missing, definitely check out my wedding vendor email templates and interview questions. All you need to do is literally copy and paste them from my document into your email and you will be well on your way. You’ll be happy to know you asked the right questions and saved yourself so much time.

You can find the bundle at https://shop.verveeventco.com.

As always, if you’re driving or working out, you can get the show notes at verveeventco.com/29 for the highlights, links mentioned in the episode, or to hear the replay.

The main questions we discussed today that will help you better plan for a memorable and delicious wedding:

  • What kind of meal are you serving (formal or casual) and how many guests will there be?
  • What kind of bar are you going to have? Hosted or open bar (where you pay for it), a cash bar (where the guest pays for it), or a combination of the two and for how long?
  • How does the caterer handle tastings and is there a fee to attend one? Also, how many guests may attend?
  • When is the final guarantee due?
  • When is the caterer arriving on the day of the wedding?
  • How will the food be served at cocktail hour?
  • And finally, when picking out your menu, have you chosen a variety of options to satisfy a majority of your wedding guests?

If you have ANY questions on this topic or any others, I’m always more than happy to answer them!

Today’s topic is an important one because your wedding venue affects so much of your wedding planning and your wedding budget!

If you’re near the beginning of your planning, it’s important to ask these questions ahead of time so you get the entire picture. And if you’ve already signed the contract, it’s totally fine. You can make sure you have the answers to all of these questions as you continue your planning so there aren’t any big surprises on the wedding day.

  • May we store items at the venue prior to our wedding day? And is there a storage fee?
  • At what time are my vendors allowed to access the space to begin setup? I like to arrive no later than 10 am. But if you’re at a property like a hotel, they might try to squeeze in a morning breakfast into the space before your vendors can set up, which might cost you extra if they have less time to set up than they normally would.
  • Going along with that, if they’re a larger property, ask them how many other events could be happening simultaneously with yours? Do they have multiple weddings happening? If so, how do they space them out?
  • Is it possible for guests from other parts of the venue (public spaces or other private events) to mix with yours? Maybe there’s a restaurant on the property that’s open to the public, or a swimming pool, or something else.
  • If you want an exclusive feeling event, you’ll want to avoid this. You also want to make sure the property’s staff can give your wedding enough attention while you’re there.
  • At what time do we and our vendors have to vacate the space? May we store items overnight or do we need to take everything with us that night?
  • Are there noise restrictions we should be aware of? At what time does the event have to end or by when does amplified music need to be turned off?
  • Do you have a floorplan that’s to scale of our event spaces with the number of guests you want to invite that’s similar to what you envisioned in terms of tables?
  • How big is the dance floor with the number of guests we expect and do you think that’s big enough?
  • Are there service fees on top of any of your venue rental fees? If so, how are they calculated?
  • Do we need to hire a valet service or transportation company or can all of our guests fit in the parking lot?
  • If the venue doesn’t have its own chef or caterer, or you’re allowed to bring in an outside caterer, ask them where does the caterer prep, do they ever need to build a kitchen tent or can they use kitchen space at the venue?
  • What tables, chairs, linens, glassware, china come with the venue rental? And may we see them?
  • Do you have any exclusive or required vendors, such as caterers, decor, etc.?

And, if you want to make your life SUPER EASY, you can visit my Resources shop and purchase the Wedding Vendor Email Templates and Interview Questions bundle so you ALWAYS know what to ask each vendor when you’re interviewing them. Plus, I include some helpful tips and things to know when it comes to booking hotels, caterers, and transportation.

Who's excited to plan the "average" wedding of their dreams?! Nobody.

How many times have you read an article that starts with something like, "On average . . . couples spend x amount on their wedding." Or, the average couple spends x amount on wedding flowers or wedding photography.

I don't know about you, but I'm not excited to plan someone's average wedding. I don't think you've been dying to plan an average wedding either.

So why should you expect to spend an "average" amount on your wedding vendors? All those inspirational images you're saving on Instagram or pinning on Pinterest were not from "average" weddings. Just saying.

Want a better way of putting together your wedding budget? Visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator**.

When putting together your budget, ask yourselves, "What are our priorities?" Some couples really value aesthetics, such as stationery, the tabletop, and decor. Others prioritize having a really good live band. It all comes down to what has the greatest impact for you and structuring the budget around that. If you think about it, when you go out for a nice meal, how much are you spending per person with alcohol? Think of your wedding as a nice meal, but you have to pay for the venue, invitations, and even the flowers, tables, and chairs. The costs quickly begin to add up.**

For more tips on putting together a wedding budget, visit my post "6 Steps to a Better Wedding Budget" at https://verveeventco.com/weddingbudget/.

According to The Knot, 45% of couples spend more on their budget than they originally planned by $7,000. The best way to avoid this kind of budget creep is to have realistic expectations about your wedding budget - and that doesn't mean using a wedding budget calculator on a website like The Knot or Wedding Wire. In the next set of tips, I'm going to expose the lies behind wedding budget calculators.

Like Lie #1, A Magical calculator can predict how much you should spend on your wedding.

I don't care how good their algorithm is or whatever they use to calculate your budget. An online calculator can't accurately predict how much you should spend on each item. There's no one-size fits all.

It just doesn't exist. To find out more on what's a better predictor of your wedding budget, visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator**.

Today’s topic is a BTS in how I stay organized with mine and my couple’s to-do list.

I use Trello to both communicate with my couples and track all of our tasks. I like Trello because the basic version is free so anyone can use it, and it has a lot of features that make project management and organization fun and super easy.

You could also do a lot of this with other project management tools like Asana, which I use in my business, or a Google spreadsheet.

**But after you listen to this episode, I think you’re really going to want to switch to Trello.

Why Trello Beats Spreadsheets to Organize Your Wedding To-Do List
1. STREAMLINED
2. INTERACTIVE & COLLABORATE
3. COLOR CODING BY TASKS OR CATEGORIES
4. SETTING DUE DATES AND REMINDERS
5. CHECKLISTS
6. DEPOSITORY FOR ALL THE THINGS
7. PLAN FROM ANYWHERE - MOBILE OR DESKTOP**

And, if you want to make your life SUPER EASY, you can visit my new Resources shop and purchase the Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist, which lists out everything you need to be doing month by month. And when I say everything, I mean everything. That planner you bought off Amazon or the one you’re using from The Knot has NOTHING on this checklist. I even have sub-checklists in some of the tasks with even more little pointers to help you keep track of your to-do’s.

But now I’m getting ahead of myself.

You can find the checklist at https://shop.verveeventco.com.

NOTES:
On average, my couples hire 12-15 service providers, depending on their venue and the level of specialization. These vendors can include the planner, venue, caterer, photographer, hair & makeup, stationer, florist, tabletop rentals, videographer, lighting designer, transportation, entertainment, officiant, cocktail hour musician, ceremony musicians. Some people hire live entertainment acts, food trucks, and even people just to provide ice. That's a lot of coordinating!

TODAY we’re talking about booking basic wedding dessert knowledge that all couples need to know.

Did you know that most weddings have an average of 12 wedding vendors, but many of mine hire 30 or more. And then, each vendor breaks up their payments into at least 2 or 3 different installments. That’s easily 24-30 different payments you need to keep track of.

And now, on to today’s episode.

Wedding Budget Lie #2: Every wedding vendor's price will fall between a specific range.

Guys, there are a lot of items that will affect how much a vendor charges - that's the beauty of capitalism. You have a choice as to how much you want to pay and they have a choice as to how much they need to charge! A couple of things that will definitely affect this will be their level of experience, quality of work, location, and the specific services you book.

To find out better predictors of how much your vendors will actually cost, visit my blog post Why Wedding Budget Calculators are Misleading at https://verveeventco.com/budgetcalculator.

Read the episode show notes at verveeventco.com/19

And, if you want to make your life SUPER EASY, you can visit my new Resources shop to download pre-made timelines that are beautiful and all ready for you to tweak and personalize to your specific day. These timelines use the framework I use with my own clients and will make sure you don’t forget very important elements, like travel time and transition time between key events.

Today we’re talking about how to pick the right wedding photographer for you and what criteria you should be using to evaluate your prospective photographers.

This is such a great topic because I know so many couples book their wedding photographer first after the venue and wedding planner. Sometimes even before their planner. But they don’t have a lot of experience booking a vendor at this point, so I think a lot of this will apply to booking other vendors, too.

There are so many wedding photographers out there. It's hard to know which one will be the best fit for you. In this case, Instagram is your friend. Start with a local hashtag such as #hudsonvalleyweddingphotographer or #newyorkweddingphotographer. Look at people's portfolios and try to understand what you like and don't like about their photos. All photographers have different editing styles. Some like their photos to look lighter and brighter. Others like their photos to be a little warmer. Some like their photos darker and moodier. If you don't know what you like, knowing what you don't like will still be helpful. Interview your top 3 prospects either in person or with a video call. They'll be with you for the majority of the day and capturing your most intimate moments, so you want to make sure you're not just comfortable with them, but love them too.

**Today’s Wedding Tip Wednesday is a preview for next week’s in-depth episode: How to Design Your Wedding. Many of you listening are struggling with your wedding design because you’re not sure where to start. This quick tip is going to give you places to get inspiration, some of which may surprise you.

When you're just starting to plan your wedding, it can be overwhelming to think of the many places where you can get inspiration for your wedding. I love getting ideas from the couple's story - where they met, hobbies they enjoy together, or even how they decorate their home. I also love getting inspiration from sources outside the wedding industry, such as interior design publications and artists. There are so many shapes, palettes, and patterns in this world that can inspire the aesthetics of your wedding. Look beyond Pinterest and Instagram and you'll have a unique wedding that's like no one else's.**If you liked this episode, please SUBSCRIBE and connect with me at  http://asktheplannerpodcast.com/

**Before we get to today’s tip, I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Thanks so much for listening to the podcast wherever you are. On a personal note, I’ll be taking the next few weeks off to be with my family. Our next episode with Molly Hartley and Jenn McClure of Scratch Bakeshop will air on January 5th 2021. It’s so weird to say that. Ahh!

Anyway, talk to you guys in In the new year (unless we DM on Instagram. And if we’re not, why aren’t we??! Come say hi to me @verveeventco

Anyway, on with the tip!

Today’s tip is a compilation of my past tips regarding your cake and desserts. It’s a little preview of what we’ll be talking about in our next episode when we resume after the holidays. Enjoy!**

Tip 016: Don't Forget Your Cake Stand

**When it comes to your wedding cake, don't forget to think about how the cake will be displayed. Ask the cake baker, What color and dimensions will the cake board be? That's the piece of wood your cake sits on. You want to make sure your board matches the color of your cake stand and that the cake stand you have is the proper size. If you're buying the cake stand, make sure you get it well in advance. You want to make sure it's sturdy enough to support the weight of a wedding cake AND it's wide enough. Most cake stands that you would buy "off the shelf" are smaller and not properly sized for a wedding cake.

Tip 017: Avoid These Unique Wedding Cake Flavors
More cake tips! I'm all for unique and personalized food, but be wary of asking for cake fillings made of anything that is seasonal, such as fruit. Also, temper your expectations if you're asking for something exotic, like a mango curd and you don't live in a climate that grows mangoes. We had a mango curd filling in our cake that was PHENOMENAL. But our baker warned us that we might need to go to Plan B if she couldn't get mangoes that were the right variety and ripeness when our wedding came. Luckily, she did and it was AMAZING, but I knew she was a little stressed about it. (Shout-out to Anita Gupta of Maliha Creations in Charlottesville, VA!)

Tip 018: How to Make Your Wedding Cake Stand Out
This is my last cake tip for the week. Promise! Instead of serving a traditional, round 3-tiered cake, consider changing it up a bit. Make the tiers different heights for a more modern and artistic look. For example, make the bottom tier a little shorter and fat, make the middle tier taller and make the top tier in between. Or even make the cake asymmetrical. This will make your cake stand out from all the other cake your guests have seen and tasted.**

If you've been following me on social media, you know that the dinner table is one of my favorite ways to get creative with the decor. I love using unique media for placecards, like luggage tags, scrolls, fruit, or even napkins. I also like using a colored napkin tied with flowers or ribbon to add some texture. Finally, printing your menus on something other than paper is a fun way to add an element of surprise to the table.  I also like having different looks for the tables. For example, you could have one linen for your rectangular tables and another for your rounds. Try to make them similar in terms of material or pattern so there's still some cohesion.
