Heart disease is largely preventable. In this podcast heart surgeon Dr Ovadia tells us exactly how to stay off his operating table with just a handful of lifestyle and nutrition tips that are quick to implement.
Dr Philip Ovadia joins us to discuss the main themes of his upcoming book, detailing how to stay metabolically healthy.
We cover what being metabolically healthy means, and identify Phil's 5 key markers to check for in metabolic health.
Much of metabolic health can be attributed to lifestyle choices, particularly those to do with diet and exercise and Phil details some common food choices (particularly seed oils and certain processed carbohydrates) that may be causing us some long term problems.
Importantly, rather than detailing too much into calorie numbers Phil outlines how food choices might have a bigger impact on helping those who need to lose weight to do so.
Dr Ovadia's book "Stay off my operating table" is released Nov 11th 2021.

Pete Troupos SSC and staff coach for Starting Strength joins Byron during his UK visit of Summer 2021.
Pete flew in from Florida to hold two camps with SSC Carl Raghavan in London, both sold out.
In this interview Pete explains the Starting Strength method and why it has such a meaningful impact when applied by lifters young and old.
He discusses the fitness/gym industry in general and goes on to explain key differences in the approach that Starting Strength takes to provide transformative changes through basic barbell training delivered by Starting Strength Coaches.
We discuss the allure of physique based training in motivating people to begin exercise, what people can expect when they begin strength training and why women should not be worried about negative effects of barbell and strength training when it comes to their appearance.
Pete also talks about the focus on progressing within strength training, why it is a worthy undertaking when there are many other forms of exercise available and how it proves its relevance within day to day living, especially as we age.
Pete goes on to talk about why there are only around 120 Starting Strength Coaches in the world, and he details the rigorous process for going beyond the industry standard of Personal Trainer to become a coach and how Starting Strength Coaches are assessed.

Disclaimer: This content in this edition of the podcast is for information purposes only. Although the compounds Olie discusses are currently undergoing renewed scientific interest for the potential to treat such conditions as PTSD, depression and more they are currently class A drugs and not currently legal in the UK and many other countries.
If you have a medical condition or are unsure our advice is to contact your GP for further guidance.
I this episode:
Coach Olie Thomas talks us through his knowledge of psychedelic compounds, their study in clinical trials, interesting historical past, uses and recent developments and the renewed interest in them by university trials over the past 20 years.
During 1950-1965 up to 1000 studies were conducted on more than 40,000 participants into the effects of psychedelic compounds.
Ram Dass, Timothy Leary and more established writers pivoted to the front of this field of interest.
However, cultural change and legal policy during the 1960s saw this branch of plant based psychedelics grouped in with prohibited drugs and clinical research halted thereafter for more than 30 years.
Olie explains the recent renewal in interest in these compounds for the treatment of conditions such as anxiety, depression and more.
He speaks about his own journey will mental illness and his personal recovery from it with the uses of these compounds.
We discuss the ethics of their use, what their new role might be in modern medicine and also explore the parallel branch of psychedelics which is rooted in spiritual growth.
This podcast is our most explorative to date and we understand that it is a step away from our more conventional topics.
We hope you enjoy the discussion on this episode and you can reach out to Olie with your questions via his social media or the profound fitness website.

In this episode Mike talks to Byron about his 3rd article in the Coronavirus series.
Iatrogenesis was published by StartingStrength.com the world's foremost strength training website and is a discussion about the impact lockdown has had.
Iatrogenesis comes from the Greek: Brought forth from the healer.
It implies harm done by something intended to be a cure.
Byron explains where the choice of title came from and talks through the content in the article.
Key points covered in this episode are:
The strength coaches perspective of lockdown and managing sickness during this time.
What our industry should be doing to be tasked with being essential.
All gyms have been forced closed during this phase and Byron argues that many facilities are offering health related products and services but have been grouped in with the non-essential Leisure bracket.
A division needs to occur with certain gyms like Profound Fitness and such small studios that are health and athlete focussed being recognised as essential and separate from leisure or entertainment type facilities.

The final episode of the Foundation series. Learn common approaches to programming for strength training and how we change the programme to ensure constant onwards progress.
***For safety and practicality reasons we recommend if you want you to strength train that you seek the advice of a professional and if you have not exercised for some time we would normally recommend that you visit your local GP before you pursue physical activity.
In this episode:
We discuss 2 types of clients a 55 year old lady and 20 year old male rugby player and how those two different approaches to programme design may differ.
We walk you through the basics of simple programming for strength progress and what we commonly do when progress starts to stall.
True Programming is not static but it is reactive!
Many times personal trainers issue a static document which is more like a to do list of things to do until the client gets bored and wants to try something else.
We emphasise the actual programming is still designed around the person but react to them and involve some changes week by week to keep them on track and progressing.
We identify the kind of adjustments we make for our two sample clients how the start points may be quite different for each of them and then discuss with some detail the kind of adjustments we would make a program to get people from their novice linear progression all the way through to the end of it and into the early intermediate phase.
We give you some common coaches tips and tricks for and sticking a lift when progress starts to stall and by the end of this podcast you should have a handy bag of tools for how to modify your program to make onwards progress in the first few months of training.
If you have any questions or if you are stuck with your progress you can reach out to us at any time via the websites. Again if you were looking for Byron's e-book on common gym mistakes you can see that at his website www.STRENGTHREVOLUTION.org

In this episode of the podcast Mike and Byron walk you through the finer points of the squat and dead lift and how they relate and are decided upon by the earlier foundations episodes.
We discussed the relevance of each lift whether or not a person is just generally trying to get stronger for healthy ageing, as well as the importance for strength training aspects with athletes as well as appearance/physique considerations.
We give an accurate description of what each lift looks like when performed.
We also discuss our preferred way of performing each of these exercises.
The squat we favour the Lowbar variant of the squat.
This enables the lifter to be more leaned over as they squat down.
In doing so it helps us to fulfil our criteria of training the most amount of muscle mass over the greatest effective range of motion, compared to the more upright back angle seen in the high bar or front squat.
Many times in gyms it is possible to see the squat done as a high bar variant.
We explain why in our opinion this should be a sub optimal use of this variance in comparison to the Lowbar version.
We also explained how to perform the Lowbar version and why it is superior to the high bar version.
We take time to discuss and explain the correct performance of the lift as well as common problems that are encountered with this exercise we also describe how to spot things on Instagram or in video that a tell-tale signs of the lift being performed incorrectly, sometimes even under supposed professional guidance!
We go on to explain in the deadlifts a similar set of circumstances, the relevance of the lift for all parties as well as how to perform it correctly and how to identify when it is being performed incorrectly.
This includes common errors that can occur that you can spot in your own form videos or when you are viewing lifts done at gyms.
We finish each section with a discussion on how to modify these exercises and when to do so.

In this episode Byron explains part of his personal philosophy over 3 points that he uses to focus on outcomes. We also discuss the criteria for exercise and provide a handy summary of past points covered in the Foundations series so far.
We start with explaining about targeted Outcomes, which is what a client might want and also what happens when strength is not the most important factor, this may involve injury rehabilitation or even some simple stretching that needs to be done.
We then unpack the Exercise Criteria that is the formula for strength training.
1 - use the most amount of muscle mass,
2 - use the longest effective range of motion,
3 - use the most amount of weight with good form.
In the second section Byron goes into his recent thoughts on the deeper purpose underpinning exercise.
His current Philosophy of Exercise in 3 points includes:
Not every workout has to be a sizzler!!
Yes it's enjoyable, but even when it's tough it still needs to get done, unlike activities that are only engaged in for pleasure..
exercise is critical to an ongoing healthy outcome for everyone and so should be more approached as a prescription versus an entertainment alternative.
We want to chart actual metrics and progress, versus a post workout feeling. What does the actual data gathered tell us about our achieving our goal?
This is how we stay focussed on our outcome and stay accountable. If we only use exercise as a form of distracting ourselves then eventually a rainy day or a long day or a heavy traffic day will unseat us from pursuing our outcome.
Staying results focussed as a form of motivations ties us into would chain of successive workouts that when combined together or lead towards a greater outcome which is truly worth dedicating time and money towards.
Because training in the way it is done at profound fitness is more in line with the lifestyle and it means that not every single workout has to be the best workout ever, or have a great vibe. There will be some workouts that have a little bit more challenging and some that a person may not feel like they need to do.
But the overall results
Justify the movement towards the overall outcome that is being worked upon.
In some areas of the fitness industry not feeling great post workout or not feeling a bus from an exercise class might justify a reason not to return to it and therefore ceased to exercise altogether. Results orientated focus means that you can see a small blip as a minor hurdle in an otherwise much longer and more relevant and helpful journey.
Workouts can be enjoyable and Prs can be celebrated but the entire system doesn't rely on a feel good factor, And should there be an absence of a feel good factor The result is still achievable for the targeted outcome.
Being methodical means being routed within a method - it serves as a clear structure and reasoning behind all of the exercises selected and the frequency that exercise happens.
It means that any question about "why" or "how" can be answered rather than navigated away from.
However, in many instances in the fitness industry randomised approaches are taken to exercising (in part to entertain a client so they don't get bored, or because the trainer themselves might be bored).
But randomising a series of exercises unfortunately present problems.
For example if you had a soreness or pain in your leg and over the course of the week you were presented with 20 to 30 different exercises and in the next week the soreness and pain disappears then you would have no idea which one of those exercises produced that result!
Randomise approach to exercise leads to an inconsistent series of events.
Inconsistent events cannot be tracked effectively in terms of the results over time.
This undermines the principle of gathering actual data about the usefulness of an exercise programme.
The methodical approach also enables much more precise changes and adaptations that can be more definitively calibrated to the person performing the exercise.
It is also important to point out that an overall method underpins the decisions about exercises and even how the performance of those exercises should go. In other words this enables effective coaching and effective coaching helps make training sessions more productive and more useful to the person doing the training.
This justifies seeking out the help from a professional, as you are sourcing a proven well thought out method.
It is a worthy investment of time and money and Mike discusses the ROI principle (return on investment) early on in the episode.
SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS FROM PAST FOUNDATIONS.
Medical Professionals - “Get some exercise“ An agreed upon piece of advice for almost everyone.
How best to get exercise? - We conclude in an Indoors gym environment.
What to train for? = Strength. All other attributes are derivatives of this one physical adaptation. General strength or the production of force is literally how we interact with our environment.
What is strength ? & Why important - Healthy Ageing - Sports Performance -physique etc.
What limitations do we have to this - we debated machines vs free weights and why we use free weights and in particular barbells.
Understanding force production and the balance linkage anatomical model - an explanation of the science and physics behind our specialist field.

Get inside of the strength coaches mind in this episode as Mike & Byron reveal the concepts behind the forces involved in training and how they effectively help lifters move correctly and safely.
We begin as always with a summary of the past episodes, which we do recommend you listen to before proceeding onto this one.
Today we help both coaches and lifters in understanding the kind of forces that are at play in strength training. This episode is designed to be particularly useful to those gym goers who might be looking to hire a professional in the future.
We begin by talking about force and classical mechanics and how it generally relates to the principle of strength training.
We then go on to discuss Newton's three laws of motion.
Each one of Newton's laws directly relates back to the kind of decisions we might make about training.
Later in the episode we go into greater detail on the three forces that lifters are subject to when they move under the barbell.
Those forces include compression, tension and movement force.
Byron goes on to reference a book he authored in 2019 "The gym mistakes you didn't know you were making "
In this book many examples of photographs are given that highlight tension compression and moment, and we highly recommend you download a free copy of this book from his website.
we close out of the episode by explaining the importance of training in the correct and full range of motion for the exercises, throughout the entire episode we give helpful explanations of how lifts should look and should not look and also provide some caution to repetitive exercise when the lift is not being performed correctly.
In particular the joints of the body Should be trained through their Effective range of motion, when done so underload this not only strengthens the muscles but also the connective tissues and ligaments of the body.
We talk about some Anecdotal examples of why this is important to not only older lifters but also athletes as well.

HOW WE MODEL EXERCISE
We discuss how we begin to model exercise.
We base this around:
What we need to be able to do in exercise and life, how we decide about the equipment we’d select to enable us to practice that and train accordingly, then have a discussion on anatomy and things that govern human movement which we call the balance linkage model.
This episode is split into sections and explanations within each one:
Section 1 - WHAT DO WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO?
We're interested in a movement pattern NOT so much a body part.
Gym training does not always equate to bodybuilding.
Section 2 BARBELLS VS MACHINES
We explain the pros and cons of machine based training and why we have chosen to specialise more in free weights and particularly barbells.
Environmental model - we explain briefly the logic behind the gym environment for more productive year round training.
Section 3 ANATOMICAL CONSIDERATIONS
We discuss how the body likes to be trained and what we have found works most efficiently as well as rules that govern human movement.
Section 4
Fusing the The Anatomical Model & Balance Linkage Model
We explain balance and how this relates to training, as well what happens when we use certain movement patterns and how this might affect us in relation to exercise.

Part 1 of the Foundation series.
We discuss why we exercise and cover some of the physiology that governs how we recover and adapt to exercise and how and you can get the most benefit from doing so.
Our approach is logical and has a clear method running throughout it. It is not random, or unclear and it means we can carefully plot out the projections for outcomes with the people we coach.
We begin with the rationale behind why we should all be exercising.
The medical benefits to our health and bodies, as well as our appearance.
We then discuss common presenting problems and why our clients seek us out.
They range from weight management to pain problems, sporting excellence and the one conduit that runs throughout is the understanding that they would like to age healthily.
We then make the case for resistance training and explain clearly why strength training is not just for elite athletes, but also for everyday people that need to be able to perform the most general of tasks in their lives.
SRA.
We then go on to explain the concept of stress, recovery and adaptation. This subject has been covered in detail in its own podcast.
However we briefly go over this important concept which affects all form of training when results are required to be produced.
SAID.
This stands for the specific adaptation to imposed demands.
We explain the importance of this phrase which means that many other systems and marketing for those systems that may purport to generate a health or strength outcome cannot always do so Past the point of what we described as the novice affect.
The novice affect applies to a person who is detrained or has been not exercising for quite some time, when this person takes up almost any form of physical activity virtually anything they do will work and be effective initially. BUT this is only limited to a short window at first. After which long or medium term progress cannot be attained in strength development.
It is this principle of novices that clever marketers often use And get away with in their marketing literature.
However we explain where the notice affect would not be valid after a relatively brief period of time at which point in order to truly adapt and make onwards progression, which would be anything after just a couple of short weeks of doing a basic exercise system, then onwards planning is needed in the way the proper strength training offers.

How effective business leaders stay fit and healthy and use gym training to enhance their working lives.
We've noticed that many of the client at Profound Fitness are managers, CEOs, Executives and business owners.
They are drawn to seek out experts in other fields for assistance as they themselves are experts in their own fields of business.
Something they have in common is they use exercise to enhance performance in business just like an athlete uses it to enhance performance in competitive events; because business is a competitive event.
We discuss the role of exercise in these leaders, how we have used our methods to serve them and what we have observed and learned in turn from coaching them.
Major trends involve the desire for a results based raining system.
The reduction of sick days and doctor visits.
Clearer focus and enhanced physical capability(good energy levels)
An effective training programme that is optimally designed for an outcome and efficiently designed to take up no more time in the gym that it ever should.

Important disclaimer
If you are experiencing pain and this includes back pain, it is advised that you first seek medical guidance from your GP/Doctor before engaging in any physical activity.
On this episode:
Mike & Byron discuss why back pain is so incredibly common in most people over 30 years old and explain why strength training has a high effectiveness in treating and helping manage it.
We explain cases of back pain where you should see a doctor and don't need any alternative options (nerve related pain symptoms)
We talk about the over lap of medical problems and the limitations of doctors and physios in situations like this and where they can be helpful.
We discuss the evolutionary origins of back pain (where it comes from in our history) as well as how reliable diagnostics such as MRIs and X rays are in this situation.
We talk in detail about the kind of exercise approach we take and why we believe strengthening exercises produce the results they do.
Have you had back pain or do you know someone that suffers from it?

Recorded during late April of 2020 Mike & Byron discuss the changes they have had to make to maintain their strength and health as well as how they have coached during this time of crisis and guidance they have been giving clients.
We chat about why certain habit changes such as socialising are so very hard to make workable in the long term and methods for making them work now, even when we momentarily forget.
We go onto to talk about the role that exercise and strength plays in health and the immune system, and how the Profound Fitness approach favours economy over excess when it comes to equipment and facilities.
This approach has in turn benefitted out clients as they have found themselves with a very short shopping list of good equipment to purchase when it comes to onwards training, done remotely.
We talk about repurposing the home to become a multiple use family space as well as work environment.
Also, when it's time to give yourself a break and how to not fall into the over work trap!
Setting rules, boundaries and limitations.
Setting up new good habits to maintain productivity and supporting a sense of ongoing control and accomplishment.
We mention fixes we have applied to manage workflow and how we both structure our days.
We discuss our future expectations for gym goers and gyms and how things might be different post - lockdown.

Injuries are unwelcome and yet afford us the time to reassess our training and approach to move forwards.
Mike and Byron discuss injuries they've had in and out of the gym as well as their approach to getting back to training in spite of them.
This podcast presents a positive angle on the subject of injury.
Whether a person has a pre existing injury or it happens during their sport we cover past case histories, as well as talk you through instances where we have been injured.
We go onto detail our approach to managing the first 24 hours of a gym injury should you have one, and discuss why strength training in the way we do it has a very low injury probability when compared to sports and other physical activities.
We also cover 3 important steps to to minimise the chance of you injuring yourself during your weight training session.
We round up by talking about 2 inspirational cases from the sporting world, where despite poor physical circumstances, both athletes went on to achieve greatness.
Profound Fitness specialises in ongoing athletic rehab in conjunction with other health professionals.

Recent events (Covid 19) have forced a radical shift in personal trainers switching to online programmes and services.
In this episode Mike and Byron start by discussing the big differences between working with a personal trainer or coach.
Many times in the industry these terms are used interchangeably but in reality they mean different things!
Even the professionals themselves seem to sometimes lack a full understanding of these terms, which is worrying but true in many instances.
Despite this many good people do pay money for something labelled as one thing which actually turns out to be another. This podcast aims to help you be able to make a sound choice for online coaching whatever your goal is and with whatever equipment you have access to.
Mike and Byron go on to give useful guidance on finding a good online coach or trainer and how to assess if they are best placed to help you achieve your goals.
The main topic of the podcast is how they offer online coaching and the system they use to ensure onwards progress in a safe and practical manner via the online approach.
They are honest about the positives of online coaching as well as the limitations of it and how in person coaching will always be the gold standard.

We take a side step from our usual health chat to discuss how customer service we have received and business systems we have been helped or hindered by has influenced our professional practice.
In an era when business loyalty is at an all time low, we explore what has worked for us as customers and what we would avoid doing at all costs!!!
In this episode we change the names to protect the guilty and shine a light on the good ones.
We discuss the excellent examples we have seen of great craftmanship in work combined with honesty and integrity.
We've modelled our businesses around being like this and having our clients be delighted with the results for years.
Sadly it has not all been like that, and we also talk about the negative experiences we have seen.
Byron recounts stories of terrible rewards as a member of executive clubs with a certain airline.
There are stories of businesses that have staff that cannot listen and horror stories of out of date tech that slowed entire operations down to a grinding halt.
We explore the benefits of being a small operation with autonomy and a clear direction.
How we like to communicate fast and decisively as well as reward our best clients instead of punish them!
We talk about Mike Matthews of Team Legion and Byron details how he learned to create a product the he himself always wanted in fitness and health as well as then over deliver on service.
At Profound Fitness we've steered away from the corporate model of charging as much as you can and giving as little as possible (nickle n' diming the customer), and embraced charging a fair price for our services and caring about the work we do and people we serve.

The basics of the body's energy systems and the role that cardio training plays for everyday health, plus how and when to include it into your gym training.
We start with an explanation of what we are really training when we train cardio and this means a basic understanding of the energy systems of the body.
Byron covers the creatine phosphate energy system, lactate energy system (glycolytic) and the aerobic energy system.
We issue a cautionary for excessive cardio when it comes to very long distance bouts of it and how this may go against muscle building and repair processes.
We further detail effective ways to lose fat in a healthy lifestyle and help you understand the balance that cardio and strength training would ideally have.
We go onto discuss how many detrained people may not initially need cardio more than strength training.
We discuss when to include it and how to grade it in to be as efficient as possible in a training programme for a busy person.
We explain when cardio might be needed right away when beginning exercise in weight loss cases.
We cover our preferred approaches to doing cardio that include when to use moderate steady state and when to use interval type training.
Mike also talks in detail about using cardio training for athletes who need to enhance performance with it.
In summary, most people have done or continue to do excessive cardio in their weekly activity and although having a level of aerobic fitness is warranted they may be missing out on the benefits that only resistance training can bring.
Cardio does definitely have its place in any long term programme, but generally in our experience most people would benefit from building and maintaining basic strength levels as a primary, with cardio as adjunct training.
The exception being athletes whom we will most likely cover more on in later podcasts.

Kirsty had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis from the age of 17. She tried everything the medical world had to offer to no avail.
Her incredible resilience and determination to never give up lead her to training at Profound Fitness.
Listen in to her incredible story form being in daily pain to performing at a high level in mountain biking.
Kirsty’s shares what the first flare ups were like and how they continued to plague her 20’s
Learn what it might be like to hear a diagnosis. It would be very easy to give up never work and that couldn’t be further from what Kirsty did.
Not only does a Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferer have to endure painful flare ups but to take medication that has very bad side effects.
Plus it still didn’t combat the worst of the flare ups which required further injunctions of steroids. This was the final straw for Kirsty..
Kirsty got in touch with Mike and discussed her plan to try and see if making herself strong could help.
She talks about how scared she was. Even getting a gym membership was terrifying, and the thought of lifting weights seemed daunting.
One of the main questions Mike had to go over with Kirsty was "what are the expectations"?.
Turns out she had high expectations.
She wanted to recover, work full time and race mountain bikes every weekend!
Plus make the training schedule that would make her competitive.
Kirsty talks us through her mindset, how she overcame the hurdles, embraced training and how it led her to reduce her medication as she became stronger.
The true test for Kirsty and the icing on the cake was racing in the Red Bull time laps
This is a 25 hour race that demands incredible physical capability from the best of athletes.

Mike & Byron geek out on some of the best books in the business for gym training, strength, physique and nutrition. Mike also includes several books he loves on management and leadership.
As coaches much of our time away from the gym is spent in research and continually refining our knowledge and ability.
Much of the high street shelves are dominated by glossy magazines and constant new releases for the latest diet fad, Mike and Byron do not advise pursuing these kind of resources and detail why.
Where there are many voices and much shouting in the fitness space, there are few voices that are really worth your time and money.
We consider part of our jobs as being filtering out the nonsense and bringing you only the most effective systems to help you.
Too many resources want to entertain you, and that leads to exercise NOT training.
Because that can mean the difference between actually getting the results you want and not we shortlist some of our best reads that you might want to include on your bookshelf.
Some of out favourite books include:
Bigger Leaner Stronger & Thinner Leaner Stronger
Starting Strength & Practical Programming 3rd Editions
The work of Renaissance Periodisation
The Barbell Prescription
Chimp Management
Chasing Excellence

In Autumn 2019 Mike asked Byron to investigate the clinical studies and literature behind links to physical activity and cognitive benefits such as reducing day-to-day psychological stress.
These evidence based findings where presented in our health and wellbeing talk on managing day today stress, where we were joined by co-presenter Garry Coles MSc.
It was our most well attended talk at Profound Fitness to date and this podcast goes into greater detail into the clinical findings; whereupon we explain the most useful points uncovered by a selection of the studies spanning back 40 years.
IMPORTANT for those people currently receiving treatment and managing psychological conditions you should always consult with your medical provider (doctor) before starting physical activity or discontinuing any medications.
The overall findings where very positive for being physically active and reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.
By the end of the podcast you'll have a clear picture of different exercise forms that can be of use, as well as how much and how often they could be used to generate a benefit when it comes to reducing stress, anxiety and depression.
Mike also details info about the use of exercise when working with clients who have Parkinson's disease.
Much of the talk was geared towards managing day to day stress and particularly applies to business professionals.

We're in a society that largely prefers to wait for the sickness then take a tablet versus getting ahead and investing in health.
Our approach at Profound is to advocate prevention rather than cure, but most folks get this the other way around and that can come with consequences.
One reason for this is the wonderful and much appreciated prevalence of our health care system, it's a safety net that is there to catch us when we fall and we are thankful for that.
But, this safety net comes with a responsibility that most overlook.
The responsibility is still upon the individual to care for their body. Then use the medical resource when it is needed, yet massive numbers of people are neglecting their self-care, and falling back on the safety net of the NHS. They miss opportunities to invest in their health ahead of time, only to desperately miss it when it starts to falter.
One common problem that is faced is budgeting for health.
Budgeting with your time and with your money; and in this episode we unpick some small changes that we have helped people make to access money they were previously spending without realising it added up to what could have amounted to a gym membership, or time with a coach.
We discuss the current wrangle in the fitness industry between exercise as a kind of entertainment that may not yield a health result, versus our approach of training and working towards a much needed outcome.
We also give some examples of straight forwards cost saving measures that can easily add up to the price of a gym membership and ultimately contribute towards the thing that is priceless, your health.

In this episode we explore the often missed relationship between training for strength, and training in general and the positive pyshcilogical benefits that result.
Having a strong well functioning body seems to carry over directly to feeling more confident and positive about life.
It also appears that this mindset bonus arrives automatically for many people, and although you may not come to the gym to improve such things as confidence it happens many times as a byproduct of such training.
We discuss the 2 things that will sabotage your good progress, 1 being uncoachable and 2 not folloiwiung the prohramme!
We also talk aboiut the knock on effects for strength training in relation to less sick days and being able to be more productive.
Although sports only work well for some people and only draw from certain demographics as Byron discusses strength training and it's benefits are accessible to a much wider group of people, including the ones at school who were not picked for teams and not very athletic.
people sometimes avoid fear avoidance trend- and so don’t even try as they may fail, this helps diminish that

In this podcast we break down the important differences between strength training and using the barbell for the olympic lifts, and why this relates to you and the kind of training you might be doing.
We go onto explain the difference between the two types of exercises, and you’ll build up a good mental picture in your mind of what they look like.
More importantly we discuss and explain why strength training is for everybody, and why the powerful Olympic lifts are only useful and practical to some people.
We identify the criteria proposed by Dr Jonathon Sullivan for assessing if a person should do the Olympic lifts.
It turns out many people perceive the Olympic lifts as the way to train for strength, but we explain that they are the display of strength and sport of their own. Whereas, the strength lifts can be trained by just about everybody and should be included in a well balanced programme.
We go into the practical definitions to help you understand the relevance of both types of lifts and then debate the use of popular gym programmes and classes such as body pump and Cross fit.

There are gyms in nearly all towns, on virtually every street corner, and yet we still have an epidemic of obesity, with many people unhealthy and less satisfied in their appearance than ever before.
In this episode we cover what you are currently being offered by the health industry at large, when it comes to weight loss and transforming your appearance as well as our solution to truly empowering you to transform, learn about the process and then hold onto the progress you have made for life.
First Half
Mike and I begin by detailing the criticism with logic behind why the current industry model is failing most people that attempt it.
When bombarded with before and after pics on social media platforms Mike and I identify the differences between the number of people that actually participated vs the number of transformations you are being shown, which is a much lower success rate.
We explain the problems with sustaining the after affects of a transformation and we also touch upon the rarer cases of people who need to transform themselves by gaining weight, not losing it!
We conclude the first half by debunking some of the less useful pills and potions that have glowing marketing but low success rates.
Also included is an insight into the psychology being used on you by marketing firms to get you to comply with sub standard products and practices.
We hope that by knowing this, it will help a good many of you to spot it and not fall into future problems.
Second Half
In the second half of the podcast we talk you through The Profound Fitness 5 step approach to TRUE Transformation and highlight how we are different from most of everything that is out there.
The PF approach involves:
1 - Fitting OUR method to YOUR lifestyle with intelligent exercise programming and nutritional guidance that reacts to your actual lifestyle rather than restricting you into impossible scenarios.
2 - Our coaching empowers you as we guide you to understand the model we use for exercise and healthy eating, this helps you develop autonomy and confidence to continue with positive change and cope whenever there are hurdles along the way.
3 - Our gym programme is designed for maximum ROI (return on investment) we don’t currently coach anyone that is not a busy person, we’ve become masters of setting you the most effective exercises that yield the greatest possible return on your hard work.
4 - We won’t be dieting you in the conventional sense, we’ll be guiding you to body recomposition where you improve and healthy amount of lean body mass, good strong bones and excellent fitness levels all while we get your body fat percentage into the right place for you.
5 - We know how to handle the before, after and often missed AFTER AFTER. This phase is often where people backslide and we have designed an approach to help you re target your goals for this phase, avoid slipping back into old bad habits and continue to make great progress and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

Getting the most value from your gym membership doesn’t just mean having one.
In this podcast we discuss the coachable and un-coachable types of mindset when approaching gym training and how they directly carry over to life in general.
We both agree that we like saving good people some money as well as helping them get the most for their money, but it’s sad when money is lost on an unused gym membership(that often ties people into 12 month contract) and worse when a much needed health outcome is not achieved.
The difference is in embracing becoming the coachable client.
Much of the fitness industry will just entertain you with constantly varied exercises, a tactic that is often used on un-coachable clients to get them to part with money but yet rarely leads to true progress.
We identify the different approach we take, and how it has benefitted the people we have trained once they have understood it, andhow much they then enjoy it as they start to see the progress coming which moves them to the true outcome they wanted from day one.
We explain the differences between being entertained by the fitness industry and being progressed by the right kind of training designed to be simple and effective.
A good coach can help you navigate just about anything in the gym and get you to your goals, and in this episode Mike and Byron unpack the individual traits between both mindsets and give guidance on being coachable, so that you can truly get the most from your time spent at the gym and reap the benefits of your hard work.
By the end of the podcast you’ll know how to be accountable to not only yourself, but also your coach or team. How to avoid falling into the self sabotaging negative traps of the blame game, and how to embrace feedback and take ownership as you work towards the results you deserve.
Get ready for positive change and bringing the right mindset into the gym and far beyond

In this podcast Mike & Byron talk about a much forgotten demographic of the fitness industry, the people who are no longer in their 20s and 30s.
Despite being a huge majority in many cases gym packages and training approaches in the “current fitness industry” are not geared toward them.
This podcast takes a look at a different and more helpful approach to training in our 40’s and beyond.
After the age of 40, this correct kind of training in the gym has a much larger potential impact for you.
We discuss the presenting problem for exercise with people over 40, both in the fitness and health industry itself, as well as explain the natural ageing process that we are all subject too.
We discuss why many current exercise plans and options that you are being offered by commercial gyms and PTs are inadequate and will not be effective at stopping the declining loss of muscle and strength and loss of bone density as you age.
Sadly, what many people are currently being offered as exercise as they age is too weaker a prescription of physical activity to be effective to them.
We address this problem, and then outline the simple exercises and approach we use at Profound Fitness to precisely dose our exercise programmes just like a doctor would dose a medicine, and then explain the kind of results we are used to our clients seeing from our approach.
The latest reports from the WHO and Chief Medical Officers are absolutely crystal clear in their guidance of the presenting problem of health as we age and the correct kind of exercise programme that includes the application of strengthening exercises; and yet much of the industry has failed to spot or implement this guidance effectively, despite charging their clients great sums of money.
We have based our approach to coaching people in their 40s having researched not only the scientific studies but training with the top coaches in the world in this field.
On the podcast Byron mentions the foremost author in this field Dr Jonathon Sullivan, and as promised here is a link to read more and hear from Dr Sullivan himself https://www.strengthrevolution.org/articles/healthy-ageing-is-strong-ageing
Our exercise prescription is designed to keep you active, develop your strength and fitness and enable you to enjoy a great quality of life now and as you age.

Getting lean has become every Instagrammers dream but, Why have they became fashionable?
Mike & Byron start off by identifying the body fat % markers that can be used to display abs in men and women.
We then take a look back into the icons of our time, delving back into the men and women considered to have the best physiques and in some cases starlike sex appeal.
These icons of the movies such as Marilyn Monroe and Charlton Heston were known for their sex appeal and captivated the attention of millions of people worldwide, but they DID NOT have by today's standards the "beach body" look. Heston, Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore and many more exhibited a natural hairy chest in their movies, something that wouldn't be fashionable in today's standards.
Monroe, Raquel Welch and Joan Collins to name a few appeared in swim wear in numerous photoshoots and some movies, again they had natural curves, but which by modelling standards of recent times would potentially place them into an overweight category.
We explore the time line and relevance of six pack abs and when we believe they became a measurement of gym "success" vs the natural physiques we mentioned of the stars of the sixties and before.
We look at the pros and cons of six pack abs and YES we absolutely explain our approach to working with natural (drug free) clients who want to develop this kind of physique and our preferred strategy for guiding them step by step.
*Note, that in many cases the order you think you should diet, train or add weight may not be correct in some instances, we also explore these kinds of cases whereupon a person might need to GAIN weight to truly develop the six pack abs.
We talk about the detail of bulking (controlled weight gain) and managing that with the timing of cutting (planned dieting for fat loss) and how our approach to exercise ultimately results in a toned athletic physique, that also provides true health for the person in an achievable body fat % range, with all the perks of not having done crash weight loss or punishing gym routines.
Our method is a sustainable long-term approach, that is designed to serve people for the rest of their lives, whichever decade of life they are currently in.
We navigate around some of the pitfalls of crash weight loss, pills and potions and avoiding getting sucked into the social media trend to display results achieved with drugs that are not practical or achievable naturally.

The Psychology Of Winning w Therapist Garry Coles MSc
In this podcast Garry takes us through case studies and methods for helping develop confidence in performance, and dealing with performance anxiety.
This applies to elite level athletes about to take the "million pound" shot, just as much as someone who has to deliver a best man's speech, or an important talk in front of work colleagues.
We discuss modern methods from NLP to CBT and of course hypnotherapy.
The barrier between normal excitement, and adrenaline and when it crosses over to anxiety and how to manage that.
Garry explains where historically anxiety (seeding events) like feelings tend to come from and then the therapy steps taken after to remove them.
Garry then takes us through his 9 golden rules to the psychology of winning.

Here is the transcript to the disassociation technique I demonstrated.
1. Think of the negative scene, or rehearsal of an event with negative connotations in the mind as strongly as possible, make it as real as possible and rate it on a scale of 10 (How fearful is it?) 2. Imagine you are in a cinema sitting in the middle of the front row. The cinema is empty apart from you. 3. Imagine floating out of your body and up into the projection room so that you can watch yourself watching the screen. 4. Put a black and white still picture on the screen just as the fear is about to develop. Run a black and white movie of the fear from the beginning (this point) to the end, (whilst you remain in the calmness and safety of the projection room) watching yourself sitting in the middle of the front row watching yourself on the screen. 5. At the end of the film freeze the frame into a still picture. Change the picture into colour. Leave the projection room and be yourself in the front row. Leave the front row and ‘step in’ to the picture, become part of it, make it real. Now run the associated film backwards (in colour) at top speed (like a video or DVD on fast rewind) accompanied by loud comedy music (cartoon, circus, Benny Hill theme etc). See everyone running backwards, talking backwards, everything comical and backwards. When you get back to the start freeze the frame again into a still picture. 6. Walk out of the still picture and sit back down in the front row of the cinema. Now blank out the whole screen. 7. Repeat steps 2 to 4. After step 4, rate the fear again on the scale of 10. How much lower has it gone? You can then continue through and repeat in a circular motion, the fear should subside each time. Repeat this exercise on a regular basis. weight loss - reduction of the total body mass, due to a loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon, and other connective tissue.
Fat loss is what your after I would assume
Nutrition - nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism.
So PT’s stay in your lane
The cross over
1. The more healthy foods rich in nutrition the better they will be. Body will function better.
2. Use daily recommendations
3. Working out how many calories and macros
What a PT can’t do
4. Prescribe what to eat
5. Diagnose symptoms
6. Write food plans
Now we know the difference, lets look at how they can be applicable
Losing weigh will be very healthy for you. The method may not be the best in the short term but I’d sacrifice it for the greater good if I new it was the right move.
If a client was prone to yo-yoing I would use a much slower approach and play a longer game.
We can take all the information from the body building world to lose weigh as quick as possible.
If the client loses weight really fast then the client will also lose a proportion of muscle mass. Obviously this could be horrendous if they didn’t have much or poor bone density.
Whats the goal? Let make your clients look how they want to look not, weigh what they want. Hopefully its becoming clearer why we say don’t focus on weight lose.
Shape, tone and body fat would be better metrics.
Curb hunger and dont eat as many calories
0% calories products
no sugar jelly
Monster
Diet coke
Healthy foods which are high in calories are being over consumed
Being a healthy weight is the number one health indicator.
Often when theres no fat there sugar
Calorie dense food will only last so long if you have a limited number of calories per day as you will get hungry and such out less calorie dense food.
