Welcome to our last #STANDSaturday! This has been an exciting 3 month series on a non-profit organization that carries out the dream of serving under-served populations; STAND (Sustainable Therapy and New Development) The Haiti Project. It is a pro bono clinic serving over 900 patients a trip in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. In this series, we have heard from volunteers from each corner of the clinic (Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Neuro, General Medicine, Wound Care). Please be sure to check out their interviews here if you have not already had the chance!
What better way to wrap up the series than with the founders of it all; Justin Dunaway, PT, DPT, OCS and Morgan Denny, PT, DPT. They take us through what their May-June trip looked like, their cookies and their crumbles, what new projects they started and how they are making amazing strides towards creating a year round autonomous clinic. Welcome to week 7 of #STANDSaturday covering another corner of the clinic – Neuro. Steven Kinney earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Columbia University in 2011. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and certified in the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). In addition, he completed extensive training in Neuro-Developmental Treatment, becoming certified under Recovering Function (RPSFC). He also has achieved certification as an Integrated Manual Therapist (CIMT) with Great Lakes Seminars. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Currently, he is pursuing a fellowship in orthopedic manual physical therapy at Regis University.

Born and raised in Georgia, Claire Steagall, RN shares her first time experience with STAND with 13 years working in the ED, PCU, Post-Op, and Med-Surg floors of many hospitals to back her up. She claims being a traveling nurse is a wonderful experience, "organizations like STAND make nursing so fulfilling and my dream is to devote more of my off time to medical missions". She answers your questions about what us (crazy) PTs look like from the outside (she has been married to one for 30 years!) and what challenges she faced. The word "collaboration" has been brought up in every service interview we have done, so why not scope across disciplines since we should be openly working together already? Have you ever looked at the statistics? According to 2003 National Assessment of Adult Health Literacy, only 12% of the population has proficient health literacy. Health literacy is defined as "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions." Sara Scarbro is a second year student at the University of Minnesota. She's also a volunteer at the Phillips Neighborhood Clinic, a nonprofit pro bono clinic that serves a community with the highest concentration of impoverished and uninsured people in all of Minneapolis, in addition to the greater Twin Cities metro area. Sara is passionate about increasing access to physical therapy services for the patients at the clinic--they are able to work with a variety of professions, including nurses and doctors to provide collaborative care for their patients.

Misericordia University Physical Therapy just started their pro bono clinic in March of 2017. The clinic serves a low income area, and provides services to both pediatric and adult populations. “Therapy can’t wait. Congress can’t either,” is APTA’s message to Congress regarding the Medicare Therapy Cap. The APTA, according to Justin Elliott, APTA VP for Government Affairs is in Full Court Press for therapy cap repeal by February 8th. He spoke honestly with us on January 26th about the challenges of moving legislation in our current political landscape, and was optimistic about the path forward to therapy cap repeal.

New year, new Graham Sessions. I had the chance to sit down with Dr. Karen Litzy, host of the Healthy, Wealthy, & Smart podcast to discuss the 2018 Graham Sessions.
If you don't know what Graham Sessions is, you're not alone. It's the exclusive conference (limited to less than 150 people) put on by the Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association where physical therapists can discuss the hot button issues in physical therapy without fear of repercussion (or their name being tossed around later). The rule is you can talk about what happened at Graham Sessions, but names aren't allowed.The conference has a series of discussions, or panels, interspersed with "What I Believe Talks" (think of these like the openers, the things that pump up the crowd). The entire conference is designed to get you to think and discuss. The conference doesn't necessarily close with an action plan--the goal is really to get the creative juices flowing.
So let's talk Graham. We wanted to know about the lively debates. Karen delivered.

Welcome to our recurring Money Matters segment! Every month, we're sitting down with Joe Reinke, co-founder of FitBUX, to discuss a finance issue relevant to physical therapists.
This month we're talking the PROSPER Act, or how the government could get rid of loan forgiveness.
The PROSPER Act was introduced in December, and will have to make its way through Congress before June. “PROSPER” stands for Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform, and it’s the new version of the Higher Education Act.

So were we. So we sat down with Joe Reinke, co-founder of FitBUX, who specializes in student loans to discuss the PROSPER Act. Joe has worked with over 2,000 physical therapists and student physical therapists to help determine the best way to repay the mountain of debt we accrued during school. He’s actually read the PROSPER Act, all 500 pages (but he tells us this is nothing compared to reading the tax code cover to cover).
Our question for Joe was, “What do we need to know about the PROSPER Act? How will this affect me as a physical therapist?”

Pieter Kroon is the co-owner and Program Director of the Manual Therapy Institute, a credentialed fellowship program in manual physical therapy since 1998. He expresses his concerns over the new ABPTRFE quality standards, and in particular, the new admission criteria. He's worried about how the new standards put a lot of risk on the sustainability of current fellowship programs, including his. It could also limit accessibility of advanced clinical education for certain clinicians.
