Darien Gold’s ALL THINGS PILATES: Recent Episodes

Darien Gold

Darien Gold, producer, writer, editor and host of the podcast, ALL THINGS PILATES brings her style and interviewing skills she developed as a radio show host. Her intention is to reach a larger audience and give greater exposure to guests who knew or worked with Joseph Pilates. In addition, First, Second and Third Generation instructors are also featured who are passionate about the Pilates philosophy, tradition and principles. Listeners can also hear those in complementary health fields such as Gyrotonic, yoga, podiatry and chiropractic. Considered now to be a global phenomenon, the Pilates method is profoundly changing both the wellness and fitness landscapes and with the ALL THINGS PILATES podcast, many of these professionals helping to make those changes possible will have their contributions preserved. Darien was the first Second Generation Classical Pilates instructor to present the traditional Intermediate Mat repertoire in an app, "Studio Darien Pilates." It was also selected by Pilates Style Magazine in 2010 as one of the Top 10 Best DVDs of the Year. Two years later, Pilates Style Magazine selected her second app, "Studio Darien Advanced Pilates" for the same honor. These two apps can be purchased on the App Store and Google Play.

Seven seasons, countless stories, and connections across the globe — what a journey it’s been. I’ve had the privilege of speaking with extraordinary people from all corners of the world — people I never would have met without this show. Their knowledge and insights have helped to keep Joseph Pilates’ vision alive. I’m grateful to everyone who listened, shared, and supported the podcast, especially my longtime subscribers.

So my loyal listeners, after seven seasons, it feels like the right time to step back and make space for other parts of life. A huge thank you to my sound engineer, Fabian Romero, whose talent, care and patience made every episode shine. Thank you again so much for your support, your messages, and of course, your ears!

Also, a huge shout out to my Podcast host, Buzzsprout that made it possible for All Things Pilates to be listened to in over 137 countries and territories. And, don’t worry though, all seasons are still available where ever you get your podcasts!

And lastly, my voice-over aspirations and audio production skills are ready and willing so if you have a project you need help with, feel free to reach out. I’m just a phone call or email away. Thank you so much for being part of this amazing chapter.

As the former host of the very first Pilates podcast called Beyond the Movement which began in 2005, Heidi Miller is our guest in this last interview of Season 7. Heidi held conversations with teachers in part about how effective and powerful the Pilates Method is especially beyond the studio. But in today’s environment with social media as the dominant connector, what’s been revealed is an ugly truth about the Pilates profession. Many teachers instead of being supportive and encouraging, diminish their peers and worse, many are bullied. I too, have been acutely aware of the lack of encouragement amongst many Pilates colleagues.

Have you ever heard of arachnoiditits? I know, neither had I..But my guest today has. In fact, she’s suffered from this autoimmune issue for the last 20 years. I wonder how Joe Pilates would treat a person with this type of disease which has no cure. Tune in as Elvia M. shares her process from being told she was destined to be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life to discovering the healing power of the Pilates Method. It didn't just provide physical therapy for her, it planted a whole new, deep-rooted system that helped to stabilize and keep Elvira's spine upright.

Today we’re talking about one of the most powerful and sometimes not completely understood tools we have as Pilates teachers; Touch. The benefits are many: alignment correction, safety, connection, grounding and encouragement. When does it help? When might it harm? And how do we navigate those moments with clarity and care? To help break it all down is Second Generation traditional Pilates teacher, Roberta Kirschenbaum. However, just as we learn about the power of touch from a seasoned Pilates teacher, Part one closes with a dire message. Coming up next on episode 124: Betrayal in the House that Joe built. This is Roberta’s story of a trust she gave that was then abused.

Living in Florida where there are many retirees, Gail Forrester our guest today and owner of Ulta Pilates & Well-being, emphasizes the benefits of Pilates for an older population. Gail herself knows from personal experience how Pilates can help in the healing process and in particular the traditional Method. A survivor and thriver of a mastectomy has only made her stronger and more resolute. She shares this philosophy and reminds them that Pilates brings healing, strength, and vitality — even into our 90s. And under Gail's leadership, they are thriving, too.

Can you remember what you were doing at age sixteen?

Our guest Elena Salamone does - in fact, this was the year she began learning Pilates mat work. And then, two years later, straight out of high school, Elena joined the Air Force and began training as an Aerospace Medical technician and pediatric medic. Yet, she never forgot about Pilates and for extra duty she took on a position as a physical training leader. She added Pilates to the soldier’s other workout programs and perhaps Joseph Pilates was encourging Elena, because as she lead the workouts, including his 34 mat exercises, she witnessed remarkable improvements in the soldiers fitness levels. So much so that they were able to easily pass their mandated physical test. Isn’t it ironic that Joe Pilates used his teachings with soldiers a century ago, and Elena used the same Method to empower the soldiers she worked with?

Our guest is Jillian Hessel, a Second Generation Pilates teacher who has had the great privilege of learning from many of Joe Pilates’ students, including Kathy Grant and Carola Trier - both became Jillian's mentors, and a very soulful bond developed between Jillian and another JP student, Ron Fletcher. Jillian refers to herself as a teacher of hybrid movement modalities and incorporates ballet, Iyengar yoga and the different approaches of Contrology in to her teaching. Her diligence in caring for the Pilates legacy she so generously was given, makes her an extremely valuable addition to the Pilates community. I’ve asked Jillian to let us in on her thoughts about forty-three years of sharing her life’s work.

Our guest today Shelly Knight-Jones, creator of the Knight Technique and Pilates Barre workouts has been through an experience none of us would wish on any woman. In 2022, Shelly was diagnosed with DCIS Stage zero breast cancer and thinking it not such a big deal, went on with her life. But Shelly learned soon after her diagnosis that she needed a lumpectomy. During the procedure, they discovered the pea sized lump was larger than anticipated and when the pathology report revealed non-clean margins, with the advice of her doctor, she made the decision to have a double mastectomy. Today, Shelly is 2 years clean and thankfully, she’s healed remarkably well. Though still passionate about Pilates and her other fitness endeavors, Shelly’s approach to teaching has changed.

Most of you know that Joe had a group of very talented students who went on to share what he had taught them, either through their own certification program or with mentorship. Today’s episode is All About Eve. Eve Gentry that is, one of those talented Joe Pilates' students. But the Pilates world may not know much more about Eve Gentry and what made her tick. She was a dancer, choreographer and seeker with an open spirit. How does this mission statement sound? “We aim to build and grow communication, opportunity, and support through continued education, business resources, and industry talks.” It almost sounds like a fortune 500 company, but it’s not. It’s the growing influence of the Pilates Global Organization co-founded by my guest today, Adrianne Yurgosky. Adrianne also helped to form the Global Pilates Association, with both of these entities having a sole purpose: To bring Pilates leaders, teachers and the various approaches of Joe’s Method under one gigantic umbrella.

Joining me today to talk about the exercise cornerstone called Footwork is my friend and colleague, Susannah Cotrone, co-owner of Cotrone Pilates in Los Angeles who has her own take on the power of Footwork. When I was going through the certification program with Romana Kryzanowska in 1994, she told us that the Reformer workout always began with Footwork because Joe, while developing his method, created Footwork to help straighten his bowed legs. But he had other ideas as to how Footwork would be beneficial for the body. As we know, he was interested in the body’s full transformation and the Chinese Healing Arts came into play. It’s reported that Joe’s intention of infusing reflexology into the Footwork exercises meant that by massaging the various points in the feet, the internal organs would be stimulated. Additionally, Romana’s view of Footwork was that we could find it throughout the system, no matter which apparatus.

Let’s face it, though gravity keeps us grounded it also pulls us down, from boobs to butts to bellies… If gravity were a person, you wouldn’t bring it home for Christmas. On the contrary, the Pilates Method is not only invited for a visit, it usually is asked to stay forever. As we age, this Method can be with us, cheering us on and helping to keep our fire lit. Susan Temkin, a Pilates student with fire to spare, is here to talk about her experience as a spirited senior living and thriving with Contrology.

Perfection in life is a double edged sword. Perfection can lead to excellence and mastery, but it can also lead to obsession and anxiety. In the Pilates community, there is not only a hint of perfectionism but an element of performing, as if on a stage in front of an audience. Joan Blum, our guest, is a 25-year Pilates veteran and former professional dancer. I’ve asked Joan to share her thoughts about the need to be perfect and the need to perform which sadly is often encouraged in different sectors of the Pilates industry. This episode touches on First Generation Pilates teacher, Jay Grimes who recently passed away and who contributed so much in helping to maintain the Contrology system.

One of the most well received episodes from last season was with John Vignola and if you haven’t heard his first interview, briefly, he spoke about his journey from a severe back injury in the 1990’s to taking a chance with the Pilates Method. He saw many specialists who helped a little or not at all. Then with a few little nudges from me, his SIL (sister in law) he discovered the power of the Method and how it helped him become pain-free. Today, he’s back to talk about his full recovery! And I'd like to add, it's not just because JV is family, his message to all of us is a powerful reminder about committing to our health. Here's to your health!

On this 100th episode of All Things Pilates, I wanted to present something a little different for you. Last year, Gareth Cornwall, a psychotherapist who is our guest today, sent me an email expressing his appreciation for this podcast. Well, it got me thinking about the role our psychology plays in the health of our body and I wondered how Gareth might have treated someone like Joseph Pilates who experienced so much childhood trauma and adversities later in life. So on this special episode, Gareth will take us through some of the process of what it might have been like had he treated or even just made observations about Joseph Pilates. As Gareth says, “Part of reclaiming life after trauma is a return to control - and certainly 'Contrology' seems to have a really positive impact on that journey.

In the 1980’s, Elena Bartley our guest today was a company member of Dance Theater of Harlem, the most prestigious black ballet dance company in the world. As fortune would have it, Elena learned about the Contrology System AKA Pilates, from the company’s executive director, Kathy Grant who was as many of you know, a disciple of Joe Pilates. After spending two decades as one of the company’s soloists, Elena transitioned to teaching Pilates and brought with her a dancer’s eye for detail and a passion for movement. She also studied with other first generation teachers, Ron Fletcher, Eve Gentry, Jay Grimes and Romana Kryzanowska who all informed Elena’s teaching.

Over the course of nearly a hundred years, the design, form and manufacturing of Joe Pilates’ invention, the Reformer hasn’t changed much. But manufacturing materials have continued to evolve and in the 1950’s, Joe’s Reformer changed from a wood frame to that of aluminum. In this episode, Joseph DeRuvo, the creator of Barefoot Contrology and co-founder of Universal Pilates Machine is about to change our idea of Joe's apparatus designs.

For those of us who are adults and have only faint memories of what it was like to be in the world as a teenager, today I’d like to introduce you to Bela Resendes, a sophomore at Spanish River Community High School in Boca Raton. Florida. For the last 2 years, Bela has been studying the Pilates Method at her mom’s studio, Delfina Pilates. Last year, I had the pleasure to teach a Wunda chair duet lesson with Bela and her sister, Luna. What I found so refreshing was their pure focus and ability to remain quiet as they took in my detailed cueing. I asked Bela if she’d share with us why in the life of a busy teenager, she makes time for her Pilates practice.

In the early 1960’s, Joseph and Clara Pilates welcomed an assistant named, Lawrence Hayward into their lives. Lawrence spent so much time with Joe and Clara, documenting Joe’s work that he eventually moved in with them, spending a great deal of time in the Contrology studio. On this first episode of Season 6, we’ll hear new compelling information about Joe’s Contrology system that will make us scratch our heads and think, there’s way more to this Contrology story than most of us have been told. Lawerence himself can’t be here to talk about this part of the Contrology story and so, I’ve asked Dale Matzkow who was a student and close friend of Lawrence’s to share with us his story.

This is a beautiful account of how Joe’s work has helped to heal the body, mind and soul. Today’s episode is a touching one. It involves the church, the prison system and a woman who took her own suffering and discovered how the power of Pilates could save her and others. My guest is Paula M, a new Pilates teacher who offers classes for church members and at a women’s local detention center. Paula refers to these classes as her Pilates ministry and her goal is to bring out the beauty in the broken. What a full circle of Joe’s life. He developed his method while incarcerated and all of these decades later, his work has returned to those who need it the most.

In this episode, Sonje Mayo, a Pilates educator and physical therapist talks about how she’s combines her experiences as a Joe Pilates student with her physical therapy background. In 2018 when All Things Pilates was a live radio show, Sonje was a guest and I and my listeners learned a bit about her. For instance, we learned about Sonje moving from her South African home to dance in England and then to NewYork City to continue her dance career. She also told us about studying dance at the famed Martha Graham school and how she discovered Joe Pilates. Like many dancers injured and/or simply needing a conditioning method, Sonje found herself at the Controlgoy studio. Over a period of two years she learned the Contrology system from Joe Pilates. Armed with her extensive education, Sonje travels around the world helping Pilates teachers understand how to get the most out of the Method.

Our guest today is Marcela Zia, a former professional ballet dancer, who now represents Empower Pilates, a classical Pilates apparatus company in Brazil. Based on Joe Pilates original designs, but also responsive to the teachers who use the equipment, this company is the latest in the growing need for quality classical apparatus. When I refer to Joe’s apparatus as “classical” for those who don’t know, it implies that Joe’s designs are carefully preserved with minimal changes, if any. I remember vividly Romana sharing with us that she would monthly or at least regularly, visit the Gratz Industries factory, at that time, in Long Island City, Queens to make sure they were complying with Joe’s specifications. I’ve asked our guest, Marcela to tell us about Empower Pilates, and what the reception has been like especially, here in America.

Healing is a word that’s tossed around a lot, even in the Pilates community. But what constitutes healing and how do we know if healing is taking place? Our hands. How often do you think about your hands and all they do for you each and everyday? We put them to work the moment we get out of bed until we turn the lights off at night. Our hands grab, wave, lift, hold, caress..and in addition, our wrists and arms allow us to practice for example, the Long Stretch series on the Reformer, or the Pull Up on the Wunda chair. Did you know that the forearm alone has over twenty muscles? Though crucial to everyday activities, our hands don’t get all that much attention. Joe understood this and invented devices to help strengthen fingers, hands and wrists. The Hands-Tens-O-meter and the Bean Bag roll up device can be found in many Pilates studios, and who knows what else Joe Pilates would have invented had he lived longer.

As you may recall, in 2000 the Pilates community experienced a collective sigh as the Pilates trademark was litigated in a court of law. However, this lawsuit resulted in the Pilates name not deemed proprietary. Now, in 2023, there is yet, another Pilates lawsuit pending, and my guest today Mary Kelly is right smack in the middle of it. Boston born, Mary, after discovering Pilates in 2008, went on to certify through Romana’s Pilates in 2016. As Season Four comes to a close,  I thought it only fitting as we began the season with a First Generation Pilates teacher that we book end it with another.  She is the most senior of our Pilates elders and is none other than Mary Bowen. Mary has taught the Contrology system for the last forty seven years. She is also a trained Jungian  psychoanalyst and cleverly blended the two practices, naming it Pilates Plus Psyche which she continues to teach.  Mary shares her wisdom and encouragement to the many generations of Pilates teachers who have come after her.

The Pilates Method Alliance had its beginnings in 2001.  Kevin Bowen and Colleen Glenn, both Pilates teachers, shared a mutual interest in preserving Joe’s Method. So they invited Pilates teachers, including the First Generation - Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel and even Romana Kryzanowska, though she didn’t attend. Also, equipment company owners, Ken Endelman and Moria Stott. They all met in Miami, Florida to form an organization and they set out to create a curriculum that would be the industry’s standard for certifying potential Pilates teachers. The PMA has had its ups and downs but has managed to survive for these last two decades. Enter Carla Harris. Hired in 2021 to step into the executive director role, Carla is determined to take the PMA in another direction that is more reflective of today's Pilates community.

My guest today is Roberta Gratz, co-owner of Gratz Industries and wife of the late Donald Gratz, whose father Frank along with a business partner opened a custom metal fabrication business Treitel/Gratz in New York City in the 1920’s. When Mr. Tretial moved on, Frank renamed the business Gratz Industries, Inc. and continued to fabricate sculptures, metal furniture and produce industrial design prototypes for many of the worlds top designers. Donald, Frank’s younger son joined his father after finishing college and a stint in the Army.At one point in the mid 1960’s one aspect of their metal furniture business began to slow down leaving room for a unique but untested type of business. On a serendipitous afternoon in 1968, Donald while delivering a metal furniture piece to one of his customers met Romana Kryzanowska at his customer’s home. Romana had needed a manufacturer for her apparatus as more and more teachers were arriving at her studio eager to learn Pilates from her and then needing apparatus to work on at home. It was this fortuitous meeting with Romana that opened a new line of business for Gratz Industries, located at that time in Long Island City, Queens - it was the birth of classical Pilates apparatus.

Second Generation Pilates instructors, like myself are referred to as such because we’ve had the privilege of learning the Method from one of Joseph Pilates’ disciples. But there are a handful of us who have had the opportunity to work with more than one disciple and and one of those instructor’s is my guest today. Her name is Pat Guyton. Though Pat wouldn’t begin her Pilates journey until 1984, she actually met Bruce King 1976, the first of 3 Joe Pilates disciples that she would eventually, work with. Then in 1992, she met and began learning Pilates with the second disciple, Kathy Grant and then Ron Fletcher in 1995 - these 3 First Generation teachers, among others who studied with Joe, are known to us as the Pilates Elders. Of the three teachers, Ron Fletcher had the biggest impact on Pat. She spent thirteen years working for and along side him. She completed over 90 workshops from 1995 - 2006. So impressed Ron was in Pat’s diligence and hard work, she became a senior teacher, then he named her master teacher as well as an assistant for his Ron Fletcher method. She was also awarded a Certificate of Merit by Ron in 1997 and 2006.

Pat is a published author, a Level Three Franklin Method educator, an alumni board member of the PMA and spent a decade as a registered physical medicine assistant at Boulder Osteopathic Center.

This podcast has featured First Generation Pilates teachers, Second Generation teachers, authors, photographers, equipment owners and even a Pilates historian, but I’ve yet to feature just a regular guy who has taken a liking to the Pilates method. I thought it might be interesting for us to hear from a Pilates civilian, if you will, who also happens to be my BIL - brother-in-law, John Vignola or JV, as everyone calls him.

When I was healing from Covid, my sister and JV were so gracious in allowing me to recover at their house. On the days I felt strong enough, I’d work with JV and teach him some of the mat exercises and stretches to help him free up his chronic achy low back. As an lifelong athlete, beginning with high school and college gymnastics, JV spent decades weight training and body building. However, a sports injury he sustained over 28 years ago never fully healed, that is, until I introduced him to the Pilates mat work. Stunned by the immediate results, JV wanted more and joined one of my weekly mat classes.

For those of you who may have people in your lives that still think Pilates is really best suited for professional dancers or athletes, please have them listen to this interview. This episode is dedicated to just regular guys and gals, who if interested in devoting time and effort, will get tremendous benefits thru practicing the Pilates Method. You might say, this Method is your true friend with benefits!

Jonathan Grubb, Pilates historian appeared on my show for the first time a couple of years ago. He talked about his history based Facebook page, called, “Joseph’s Legacy - Pilates 100 + which at the time had already attracted five thousand followers.

Jonathan has lived almost his entire life on the Isle of Man which is a small island in the Irish Sea off the coast of Great Britain. He was introduced to the Pilates Method in 2013, but he had no idea at the time how his life would intersect with Joe Pilates. When Jonathan and I first talked, you may remember that he told us of his amazement at discovering that the man whose method he was studying, had been interned on the Isle of Man at Camp Knockaloe, the largest internment camp during World War One. And to his utter surprise, he also learned that his own great-grandfather, Jakob Grubb was not only another internee at Camp Knockaloe, but unbelievably, imprisoned in the same sub camp as Joe. From that point on, a flurry of research about Joe and the lives he touched ensued and to this day, continues.

Jonathan’s Facebook page now has almost fifteen thousand followers who are transfixed by his on-going discoveries. With his honorable reputation, he’s been given access to archival material and shares these items on his page. One example, is an inquiry letter from Joe Pilates to Anna Shaffer, a guest on this show, who studied with him for nearly sixtenn years. So, my faithful listeners, get comfortable and sit back as you listen to Jonathan’s story and you’ll even be hearing for the first time, new information he has yet to make public.

Jennifer DeLuca, owner of BodyTonic Pilates Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY. Jennifer began her Pilates life in 1985 at the esteemed High School for the Performing Arts in New York City. Part of the curriculum was a semester of the Pilates Mat under the tutelage of Nancy Butler. Not exactly wowed by Pilates, Jennifer couldn’t have anticipated how her love of dance and movement would intersect with the Pilates method.

Joe Pilates said, "A healthy body is your birthright,” but his quote would be tested when Jennifer discovered a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2020. Learning she had the BRCA gene, Jennifer made the hard decision to have a double mastectomy. So began her journey of isolation, surgeries and chemotherapy. She credits the support of her staff, clients and her own Pilates practice for helping her return to health.
Today, Jennifer has no known cancer and she and her business, BodyTonic are thriving. For those who are dealing with any kind of health issue, you may find this interview very inspiring.

There is no machine that man has invented that can compete with the complexity of our own human spine. The Spine is a masterpiece of science and art. A pillared tapestry of bones, muscles, joints, nerves and connective tissue. But sometimes our spines fail us, they either can no longer keep us upright or disease has decreased normal range of motion or there is simply the pain of wear and tear. However, there might be help for these types of issues, and with us to discuss them is Gwen Miller, an integrated therapist who specializes in spinal pathology.

Gwen has developed, written and taught an array of continuing education workshops and courses on various spinal pathologies such as scoliosis and osteoporosis. Gwen is also a published author. North Atlantic Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Publishing will release Gwen’s book, Safe Movement for All Spines, A guide to spinal anatomy and how to work with 21 spine and hip conditions in the spring of 2023.

Entrepreneurship. What is that exactly? And what does it have to do with the Pilates Method?

Well, if are you a Pilates instructor or studio owner, then you may find this interview especially interesting. Our guest is George Tingo, an entrepreneur who has a 40-year career in business and law and founded and practiced law in a San Francisco based business law firm. He was the Founder/CEO of a multitude of national and international service, manufacturing and technology companies, including CEO for a publicly traded company.

For those of us who own our own studios and even those who are independent Pilates instructors, I’ve asked George from his perspective, what it takes to keep a business running and how better we might manage our studios. As George will explain, a healthy business has three goals. Your business for profit, your business for the betterment of others, and thirdly, your business for creating your own peace of mind. George is an avid golfer and yoga practitioner and perhaps one day soon, a Pilates client!

Our guest today is Nancy Chin, owner of Pilates Avenue Los Gatos in the city of Los Gatos, California. She is a graduate of the Vintage Pilates program called, The Work. Last summer, Nancy had a life changing experience that impacted her own Pilates practice and gave her an entirely new understanding of the body - especially, the pelvic region. After many years of dealing with an extremely painful hip, Nancy decided to have her hip replaced. I’m not sure if there are statistics that show the number of Pilates instructors who have hip replacements, but I thought Nancy would be the perfect person to take us through the surgery, the post surgical phase and if the Pilates method had assisted in recovering her balance, strength and mobility.

If someone wants to learn the Pilates method, he or she most likely will sign up for a classical or modern Pilates class. However, before there was classical or modern, there was just Joe’s method that he called Contrology, but for some his work is also referred to as “Archival Pilates.” This term means that Joe’s exercises are taught and practiced exactly as he documented and demonstrated. But does anyone “own” these archival exercises? Well, no, they do not. If someone were to search out a studio that offers archival Pilates lessons taught on replicas of Joe’s apparatus designs, they might find a Pilates teacher like Christina Gadar, our guest today.

Christina is a Second generation Pilates instructor who not only teaches Joe’s work at her own space, Gadar Pilates in Sarasota, Florida, but after almost two years of research has created an online educational platform called, Open Access Pilates Archives. It’s her mission to introduce Joe’s original work to Pilates teachers and enthusiasts by demonstrating the archival method and she also includes her own notations. Christina is the author of six books and the creator of the Pilates Animals Workout for children.

As many of you know, there is an aspect of the Pilates industry that involves law suits about intellectual property, copyrights, trademarks, patents and public domain. I thought it important for all of us to learn about these legal terms because so many of us teach online as well as in person and may not be aware of how to protect ourselves.

With us today is attorney, Gordon Firemark, known in the podcast world as the Podcast Lawyer. Gordon has been practicing Entertainment law since 1992. His practice covers copyrights, trademarks, business transactions, and corporate matters for clients in media and entertainment. In addition to a busy law practice, he teaches Entertainment Law at  Columbia College Hollywood, Intellectual Property and Media Law at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and Contract law at Pepperdine Law School.

When Joseph Pilates was interned at Camp Knockaloe on the Isle of Man during WWI, little could he imagine that over a century later, a museum would be built very near where he was interned. The Knockaloe Visitor Center took almost ten years from its concept to its grand opening in 2019. At the helm of this visionary project is our guest today, Alison Jones. Although we know that Joe Pilates was interned at Camp Knocklaoe, there is a larger story here and Alison is going to share it with us.

When we think about people practicing the Pilates method or Contrology, most likely we imagine heathy bodies engaging their musculature and employing their minds to get the most out of each class. But what happens if the brain is impaired by disease or injury, is it possible for the body to still get the benefits of Pilates?

With us today to answer this question is Professor Mair Culbreth. She is the Director of the Pilates certificate program at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where she also serves as the assistant Professor of the Dance department.

The  Pilates book list is growing and in case you don’t have Eva Rincke’s biography on Joseph Pilates, I highly recommend it.

Born in 1981, Eva Rincke grew up in Leonberg near Stuttgart, Germany. She studied history and philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin. From 2007-2010 she worked at Buchenwald Memorial, doing research for an exhibition about Forced Labor during World War II. She is a freelance historian for several historical institutions in Germany and Austria and wrote articles for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos. Eva lives in Stuttgart, Germany with her family where she continues to write, edit and research historical events.

Enter Pilates: After giving birth to her first child and needing to strengthen her body, she discovered Joe’s method and used it to help her return to full health. Not surprising, Eva was fascinated with the inventor. Her curious nature and historical research background inspired the 2015 Joe Pilates Biography. This episode, Part One, focuses on Joe's first forty years of his life. Eva will return in a couple of months for Part Two, Joe and Clara in New York City.

By now, many of you have watched the various archival footage online showing Joe Pilates and a handful of his students practicing his method. There is one very notable film clip of a young Anna Shaffer demonstrating ballet movements using an invention Joe developed he called the "Headdress."

Anna was in NYC studying ballet at the School of American Ballet and was told she had a weak back. Anna contacted her ballet mentor, Dorothy Alexander, the director of the Atlanta Ballet company for advice and Dorothy told Anna to go see Joe Pilates. It was 1950 and when Anna stepped over the Contrology studio threshold, Joe took one look at her and knowingly said, “I will change your life forever.”

Welcome to the ALL THINGS PILATES Season Three highlight show.

This Season was a fun one for me and I hope you thought so also. As with Season one and two, there were many opinions expressed about the Pilates method, but this time around there were also insights shared about the Pilates history in photos and magazine articles. There were complimentary modalities presented and how they fit in to the Pilates landscape. Many episodes illuminated the versatility of Joe’s method and his inventions. You also heard from some of my hard working students when asked how the Pilates method had impacted their lives. For your listening pleasure, ALL THINGS PILATES presents the 2021 Season highlight show.

You know, maybe there is something to this idea of six degrees of separation. My guest today, Roberta Kirschenbaum and I and Joe Pilates walked the same streets in New York City and actually, climbed the same stairs in the now famed building, 939 8th Avenue. Without being aware of each other, Roberta and I both took dance classes on the second floor at Clark Center not knowing that on the same floor Joe Pilates once had his first and only Contrology gym.

It was during a ballet class in 1984, when Roberta first heard about Carola Trier, one of Joe Pilates disciples. Roberta had injured her back and the studio manager suggested she go see Carola. At that time, Roberta couldn’t afford Pilates classes and was able to heal herself, but the buzz around the Pilates method intrigued her and eventually she began studying with Carola. Roberta’s story gets much more interesting! In 2005 she returned to 939 8th Avenue not as a dancer but as a Pilates studio owner, and incredibly for the last sixteen years has taught the Contrology system in Joe’s original space. I’m very excited to have Roberta here to put a cap on Season Three and to hear how she’s helping to keep Joe’s method alive.

Injuries are sometimes unavoidable. Though I’ve always contended that an injury can be one of our greatest teachers, it’s comforting to know if surgery is necessary, having an experienced and caring surgeon can ease some of the anxiety produced by going under the knife. With us on this episode is one of those caring physicians, his name is Dr. Spencer Stein.

Dr. Stein is a Sports Medicine surgeon who specializes in repairing shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. His intention is to educate his patients about the least invasive treatment options he offers but if surgery is the best choice, then he explains clearly what the patient can expect. My burning question during this interview is will we all eventually develop arthritis? Dr. Stein offers his expert opinion and advice.

The Feet. Ugh, love ‘em or hate ‘em, we’re stuck with them. Many people experience foot pain and may not know what to do about it, but Joe Pilates understood what to do, in fact, he invented two small devices to help correct the feet. The foot corrector and the Toe exerciser or sometimes referred to as the Toe Gizmo, were designed to strengthen and make supple the very foundation of our skeleton.

I’ve asked our guest today, Karen Moran, a physical therapist to explain from her perspective how the feet play a major role in developing and maintaining a healthy functioning body. Karen is the founder and CEO of Fusion Arts Physical Therapy in Los Angeles, CA., where she specializes in Dance Medicine. Theaters such as the Pantages, the Ahmanson, Mark Taper, and various other theaters in the Los Angeles area have employed her to keep their performers healthy. In addition, Karen has treated professional dancers in companies such as Los Angeles Dance Project, Los Angeles Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance.

When a Pilates conversation happens especially with those who have only heard bits and pieces about the method, usually there is nervous laughter about bodies contorting on torturous contraptions. But all that changes when someone begins a Pilates program and is introduced to this brilliant system. They get to work on fun apparatus like the reformer, the different chairs and barrels and even the Cadillac.

There are a number of Pilates apparatus companies supplying studios and individuals, but newer Pilates companies have entered the market. Many of these companies replicate the existing Pilates designs. In this episode, Joseph DeRuvo who has practiced and taught the Pilates method for over 10 years, recognized a need to redesign lighter weight and more affordable equipment.

Our guest is Full professor, Dr. Nic Butowski, a neuro-oncologist who researches brain disease at UCSF in the Neuro-oncologist department. He also is a Pilates devotee. Though his specialty is researching and studying brain cancer, today we’re focusing on brain health and, if the Pilates method is a key factor in maintaining a healthy brain.

Dr. Nic says we hold psychological and physical tension in our fascia and in the way we move. By practicing the Pilates method regularly, his own daily stress is alleviated especially by using the breath correctly. Practicing the Pilates method focuses so much attention on the physical body - mastering our technique, learning transitions, balancing on one leg, etc. But is the brain involved also? I’ve asked Dr. Nic to explain to all of us Pilates devotees how the brain functions during exercise.

I’m sure most of you have used an encyclopedia at some point in your life, but did you know there is now an encyclopedia dedicated to the Pilates method?

Our guest today is Mara Sievers and she’s created an online educational platform for Pilates instructors especially those just entering this field. Mara, a former actress and dancer had a career in musical theatre and it offered her the chance to travel and express her stage talents in a variety of venues. It was at one of these venues where she sustained an injury which led her to yes, you guessed it - Pilates. Mara not only healed from her injury, but felt so empowered by her Pilates experience she wanted more and enrolled in a certification program through Polestar Pilates. Though Mara’s passion and understanding of the Pilates method deepened, she was becoming buried in her copious note taking. She also had many questions and found herself clicking from one website to another, rarely finding what she was looking for.

Out of frustration birthed an idea - why not have tons of Pilates information in one place? For the last 2 years, Mara has been building her online library and she’s here to tell us more about the inner workings of the Pilates encyclopedia.

Paige Dent, a third generation classical Pilates instructor began her love of movement as a young competitive all-around gymnast where she learned hard work and discipline. Later, when she discovered the Pilates method, she delighted in knowing it was a natural evolution of her gymnastics training.

In 2005, after experiencing what she now describes as, “Pilates lite," Paige took the next step and became certified with Power Pilates in Atlanta, Georgia. A move to England offered Paige the chance to take her classical Pilates education and mix in what she was learning from her husband, Alex, an Osteomyologist. Together they were inspired to create comprehensive health program designed to encourage their clients to take control of their long-term health through movement, clinical therapies, detoxification and lifestyle strategies. As classical Pilates was a large component of their program, Paige grew more and more frustrated because the apparatus she had at the time, would not accommodate the classical repertoire.

Then three years ago, Paige became an online student of mine and she warned me it might be frustrating to teach her because her equipment wasn’t meant for the original Pilates method. We both concluded after a number of challenging lessons it was time to sell her equipment and purchase new from the leader of classical apparatus, Gratz Industries, Inc. Paige is here to share her incredible journey of reconnecting to the original exercises and sheer delight at being able to express her God given talents.

My guest today is Tracy Belcher, the founder and managing editor of the popular Pilates blog and brand, Pilatay. Tracy is a classical Pilates instructor, Franklin Method teacher and former marketing and communications professional. And though Tracy is completely obsessed with classical Pilates, she says it has a public relations problem - actually two. Problem #1 - An awareness issue: People do not understand what classical Pilates is and what makes it different from its contemporary sister. Problem #2 - An image issue: There is a perception of elitism and exclusivity. As Tracy explains, “This generation of Pilates teachers and students don’t care about past drama, it’s a turn off. We just want to learn the work.”

Bob mandated that all of his graduates dig deep into the life of Joseph Pilates or the apparatus he invented and share those results with the other students. Nora chose the Jump Board, an added accessory to the Reformer. Looking to find out how the Jump board came to be, she learned it wasn’t even in existence when Joe was alive. Today’s episode is filled with historical information surrounding the years Joe Pilates was interned on the Isle of Man. Our guest, Jonathan Grubb who lives on the Isle of Man, discovered the teachings of Joseph Pilates in 2013 and soon after, learned that his great-grandfather was interned on the Isle of Man at the very same time as Joseph Pilates and in the same sub camp inside Camp Knockaloe. Though there is no proof,  it’s believed that his great grandfather was actually one of those internees that Joe instructed.

This is a fascinating interview with someone who has spent the last seven years researching not only the connection between his great-grandfather and Joe Pilates, but on how other fitness pioneers of the early 1900’s influenced Joe and his exercise method.

I’m so excited to share with you a very special guest. Her name is Mary Bowen and she is the eldest of the Pilates Elders still going strong after 61 years of practicing and teaching Pilates.

When Mary was 29 years old, she discovered Joseph Pilates while scanning a NYC newspaper and saw an article about him. He was being interviewed about his exercise studio and his Contrology method. What caught Mary’s eye was the accompanying photo of a man of medium height, barelegged, bare chested in tight shorts, canvas shoes, and a lion-like mane of white hair. Something else kept Mary’s attention. “I base my whole method on the baby and the cat, Joe said.” Mary had no baby and no cat, but her intuition told her to go meet him. That was 61 years ago. Mary doesn't hold back and shares stories of her experiences with Joe and Clara...It's a delightful interview, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I’d like to begin with a little story. The pelvic girdle is similar to a lead actor in a play. The lead actor sets the tone and calls the shots. But there is also the supporting cast, and just like with the supporting cast, in the body, there are the hands, arms, shoulders, head, the feet, shins, and thighs. But they don’t move correctly until they get their cue from the lead actor, or from what is our topic for today, the pelvic girdle. Joining me in the studio is my guest is Mercy Sidbury and she’ll explain about the anatomy of the pelvic girdle.

Reiner Grootenhuis was born in Berlin and his journey to finding his life’s work started as a 12-year-old racing cyclist, training 5 days a week, resting on Saturday and racing on Sunday. Reiner explored other sports as well, such as rowing and weightlifting, but all of these activities took a toll on his body and his physical pain was constant. There was something missing in his overall body conditioning and after much research he discovered autogenic training, a little known relaxation and mediation practice which helped to soften his overtrained muscles. By sixteen, Reiner began studies in the martial arts of Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu and graduated to teaching self-defense to women and children. Then in 1992 while watching television, Reiner saw an advertisement for the Pilates method and he filed the ad away knowing one day he’d try out Pilates. It was 2005 when Reiner finally decided to explore Pilates and bought a Pilates DVD to help him learn on his own. He took to the work immediately and was hooked. Reiner recognized that his previous trainings had prepared him for a career in Pilates and in 2010 he  sought out a Pilates certification program called Body Arts Science International, also known as BASI. The following year, Reiner completed BASI’s certification for mat and equipment. There is much more to Reiner's story, tune in to this episode to learn more!

Lori was fascinated by Pilates and so curious about what was under the skin, she thought physical therapy would pair beautifully with Pilates and decided to go to physical therapy school. Almost 10 years ago when my first iPhone app came out, there were only 4 other Pilates-based apps in the iTunes store and my app was the only one showcasing the classical mat work. I was thrilled when I was contacted by Amanda Altman, then the assistant managing editor of Pilates Style magazine because they were interested in featuring my app. Now a decade later, I have another opportunity to be just as thrilled because Amanda Altman is our guest today.

With a degree in Political science from Stern College in New York City, Amanda set out to find work but soon realized a career in Poli/Sci wasn’t for her. Amanda knew she loved to read and write and thought writing and editing for a magazine might be a better fit. She began interviewing for various magazines and in 2006 was hired by Pilates Style as their assistant managing editor. Two years later, Amanda was basically running the show from crafting the editorial lineup for each issue to editing and writing exercise stories and features to organizing the magazine’s massive 3-day photo shoots where they’d shoot content for almost the entire year.

Tactile cueing. What is it and when should Pilates instructors use it? And does the decision to use it change if you’re a male instructor? With still a female dominated Pilates clientele are male instructors expected to have to ask permission before they place their hands on clients? Perhaps a consent disclaimer should be included as part of the intact form a client signs before beginning Pilates lessons?

Teachers and students often develop a close bond, and though the touch can be helpful  and healing, teachers must protect themselves so students don’t misread any type of tactile cueing. Tune in to hear Jack’s thoughts about this sensitive issue.

I met my guest, Moses Urbano over 20 years ago during a Romana’s Pilates convention and we’ve stayed connected ever since. Moses’s personal philosophy is to forever remain a student and he demonstrates this by continuing as a student with his fellow teachers and instructor trainers at Romana’s Pilates.

His passion is to share his Pilates journey and to support Pilates instructors around the world. Through the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Moses had the great privilege of assisting and traveling with Romana Kryzanowska on her certifying tours abroad. Though Romana is no longer with us physically, I know her spirit is very happy to know Moses has taken a leadership role in the Pilates community and is mentoring new generations of teachers.

The Reformer, the most enduring and popular Pilates apparatus our genius mentor, Jospeh Pilates invented. Originally named, the Universal Reformer, this piece in the Pilates line-up was first built by the inventor himself and his brother, Fred.  As the Universal Reformer gained more attention, the demand for it became greater.  Romana Kryzanowska, one of Mr. Pilates’ most devoted disciples, continued his teachings on his apparatus at the NYC original studio after Joe passed away.  Then in the late 1960’s a fortuitous meeting with Donald Gratz, a metal installation and furniture company owner would set in motion the next generation of apparatus, including the reformer.

Now, in 2019, there is yet, another iteration of the classical Pilates reformer, this time, manufactured by Balanced Body, a leader in the Pilates apparatus industry.  My guest today is Ana Caban  who is the Balanced Body Brand Ambassador for the new Contrology reformer.

I conceived of The First Seven in 2010 as a way to help beginning students understand the Pilates technique. I titled the DVD, The First Seven, because those were the first mat exercises I learned from Romana Kryzanowska. Her simple but effective approach into the mat repertoire by teaching these seven basic exercises was extremely helpful and I knew it would help others. The First Seven is sold on Amazon and a great addition to your DVD library.

Roberta Gratz is the co-owner of Gratz Industries, Inc. and wife of the late Donald Gratz, whose father Frank along with a business partner opened a custom metal fabrication business Treitel/Gratz in New York City in the 1920’s.

After Donald took over the family business and while delivering a metal furniture piece to one of his customers met Romana Kryzanowska at his customer’s home. Romana had needed a manufacturer for her apparatus as more and more teachers were arriving at her studio, the original Pilates studio, eager to learn the method from her and then needing apparatus to work on at home. Meanwhile, Donald went on a blind date with a young reporter named Roberta Brandes. Roberta began her journalistic career as a copy girl in 1963. She quickly rose up to become a reporter for the New York Post in 1965 where she spent the next 15 years. This interview is part of her story.

Mr. Pilates developed his method in part, by observing feral cats and watching how their spines flexed and extended, and from those observations developed his mat repertoire. Eventually, medical professionals took notice especially, chiropractors. He would go on to share his method with the chiropractic community evidenced by a plaque which hung in his studio. It read: “This is to Certify that Joseph Pilates is awarded this appointment of merit in appreciation of his valued assistance in the presentation of the Post Graduate course of the Academy of Chiropractic, Inc.”

Chiropractic is from the Greek, meaning “done by hand.” It is grounded in the principle that the body can heal itself when the skeletal system is correctly aligned and the nervous system is functioning properly. Joining us is Dr. Charles Zollner, a chiropractor, and he’s here to discuss in more detail the benefits of chiropractic care and its connection to the Pilates method.
