Hey Logo Geeks! It’s Ian Paget here for another podcast to help you make a living designing logos.
Now today’s episode is going to be a little different from usual…
There’s no guest, no interview - just me, chatting directly with you about something that’s really close to my heart. Something I’ve been thinking about for a long time now, and I’m finally ready to offer: one-to-one mentorship and consulting for designers.
But before I dive into what that is and how it can help you, I want to give you a bit of context.
Over the past 20 years of working in design, I’ve been incredibly fortunate. I’ve built a career I love, I’ve worked with amazing clients, and I’ve grown the Logo Geek brand into something that’s helped thousands of designers around the world.
But I didn’t do it alone.
I’ve had the help, support, and advice of so many generous people along the way... mentors, peers, even strangers on the internet—who offered guidance when I needed it most. And honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
That’s why I’ve always made it a personal mission to give back. I’ve done that through this podcast, the Logo Geek blog, the community on Facebook, replying to DMs, emails... you name it. And of course, I also wrote my book, Make a Living Designing Logos, to share everything I’ve learned about building a sustainable design career.
And while I’ve loved every second of that, I know sometimes… a podcast episode, a blog post, or a quick answer in a Facebook group just isn’t enough.
Sometimes what you really need is a real conversation. One-on-one time with someone who’s been through it, made the mistakes, figured things out, and can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
That’s what I want to offer now.
Bringing back what I lovedA few of you might remember I previously launched a private designer community, originally called the Logo Geek Logo Club. It was such a joy to run. I especially loved the group video calls where I got to chat with members directly and offer feedback and support face to face.
But, as much as I loved it, I had to make the hard decision to close it. I’ve got personal responsibilities... I'm a single dad to an amazing 6-year-old daughter—and I didn’t feel I could give the community the time and energy it truly deserved.
Still, the thing I missed most from that time was the direct, personal support... those real conversations that made a difference. So I’ve been thinking about how to bring that back in a way that works for my life and also helps me cover my time financially.
And I want to be completely honest with you…
This isn’t about money. I’ve been helping designers for free for years, and I’ll continue to do so. But I know that some people genuinely want or need deeper support. And if I’m spending an hour helping someone, that’s an hour I’m not spending on client work or with my daughter.
So this is simply about creating something sustainable, for me and for you.
What I'm offeringI’m now opening up one-to-one mentorship and consulting sessions, specifically for designers who want to make a living from their craft.
Here’s what it looks like:
We’ll jump on a one-to-one video call, just you and me
I’ll provide personalised advice and support based on your unique situation
You’ll get a recording of the session so you can rewatch it anytime
I’ll also follow up with notes and action steps to help you move forward
This can cover anything you’re struggling with; design feedback, portfolio advice, landing a job, finding clients, dealing with tricky clients, or even launching your own podcast or building a brand around your name.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow and scale what you’ve already built, I’m here to help.
Pricing and how to bookI want to make this as accessible as possible:
You can book a one-hour session for £100
Or, if you’re looking for ongoing support, you can get a block of ten sessions for £800, so £80 per session
To book, just email me directly at ian@logogeek.com, and we’ll start the conversation. We’ll chat about what you need, and I’ll let you know if I think I can help.
This is your time, dedicated, focused support to help you grow, gain confidence, and make progress.
Final thoughtsLook, I know how overwhelming this industry can be. I’ve been there. I’ve doubted myself, I’ve taken on nightmare clients, I’ve undercharged, and I’ve made all the mistakes you can think of. But I’ve also built a business I’m proud of, with a steady flow of great clients, and a brand that opens doors.
And if I can help you do the same, even in a small way, I’d be honoured.
So if you’re ready to take the next step, reach out. Again, my email is ian@logogeek.com.
Thank you, as always, for listening, and for being part of the Logo Geek community. I’ll be back soon with more episodes to help you thrive as a logo designer.
Take care, and speak soon.

I’ve always liked to recommend to young designers is that you start your career working in a design agency before going freelance or starting your own design agency, that way you can see how things work and learn from others.
But the founders of SNASK have challenged that. Since the very beginning of their agency, which they started straight out of uni, they’ve set out to challenge the standard industry way of doing things, and have aimed to do things differently… to do it the SNASK way. In this interview Ian speaks to Fredrik Öst & Erik Kockum to discover how the agency SNASK started, and the journey taken to create a unique design agency.

Whilst 2020 could easily be deemed as the worst year in living history there were still plenty of individual success stories from Logo Geek community members throughout the year. One such story was from Chris Logsdon, who fulfilled a lifelong dream of designing a logo for NASA.
Chris was tasked to redesigning the logo for NASA Launch America, the company that bridges the gap between NASA and private space companies such as Elon Musk's SpaceX.
In this interview we learn how Chris landed the project of a lifetime, the behind the scenes design process and how it was presented. We also dive into how Chris managed to get a creative director job working with Gary Vaynerchuk at The Sasha Group, and end with a few book suggestions.

When I say Independence Day, a few of you will think of the 1996 movie starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum. But if you're an American, Independence Day is a celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which happened on July 4, 1776. It's a day celebrated with fireworks, family reunions, barbecues, picnics, parades and more.
In 2026, America will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding, and America250 promises to be the largest and most inclusive celebration in the country's history.
Such a monumental occasion deserves its own identity, and that task was given to the brand design agency Landor. In this interview, Ian's joined by Valerie Aurilio, General Manager and Phyllis Murphy, the Executive Creative Director of Landor in Chicago. In this interview we'll learn more about the America250 project, how Landor approached a brand intended for almost 400 million people, how the logo was designed, presented and more.

Design is one of the hardest jobs there is. We strive to create the best design work we can, seek to follow the latest design trends and constantly push to get better. With that comes comparison, and often a feeling of never being good enough. Many designers struggle with self-doubt and impostor syndrome, which can lead to an unhealthy mental health.
On this podcast Ian is joined by Arjun Ahluwalia to discuss his struggles with self-doubt, and how he's worked to overcome it. Arjun is the co-founder of Uting design, and co-host of the Design Revision Podcast.

When most of us think about branding we picture logos, fonts, images and colour. But with a TV in most peoples homes, and mobile devices in peoples pockets everywhere they go, sound and video have become increasingly important for businesses globally.
With so much opportunity to be heard through a wide range of platforms, having a consistent audio brand across video and audio is key to aid recognition and to stand out and differentiate from the competition.
In this weeks episode Ian's joined by the team from Drop Music Branding; Mauro González, Dalmiro Lacaze and Gabriel Agüero, where we discuss Audio Branding, the process to create a distinct sound for a brand, and we go behind the scenes on the creation of the new Logo Geek audio too.

If you operate as an independent designer it's a good idea to build up multiple revenue streams so you're not always trading your time for money. There's plenty of ways to do this, such as designing and selling digital products like fonts, stock icons and images, but have you ever considered designing a product to solve a problem?
That's what Andy Brown did. He struggled to choose colours, so he created Swatchos, a deck of cards that allows you to play and work with colour. And as a way to fund the production of the product he launched a crowdfunding project through Kickstarter.
In this episode we learn more about Swatchos and how it was created, we discuss how to select a colour, talk about how to launch a Kickstarter campaign, and end the conversation with a discussion around the Print Handbook with advice on how to make the most of modern print technology.

If a logo design is beautiful and skilfully crafted, will it be a successful logo? Not necessarily.
A successful logo requires more. It should factor in context, an understanding of the business, its competition and target audience. Only then can you understand the challenges faced, do the necessary research, and know if the logo designed will be an effective solution.
The importance of context in design is one of the many topics discussed in this interview with Diego Vainesman, the co-founder of the design studio 40N47 Design. Aside from being an agency owner, Diego also teaches "Type: Bridging Image and Context" at the Masters of Visual Narrative at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was also the first latin president of the Type Directors Club, has also taught logo design at cities around the world, and is the author of the book ‘Logo: the face of branding’.
In this episode aside from discussing the role of context, we also speak about the book and the lessons learned, Diego's experience teaching design, and we end the interview learning a more about the Type Directors Club.

Over the past few years there have been some pretty big movie identities designed by Pentagram. These include "DC Entertainment", JK Rowling’s films "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and "The Crimes of Grindelwald", Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of "Ready Player One", "Birds of Prey'" the Warner Brothers identity... the list goes on.
The person behind all of this is Emily Oberman.
Emilys had an incredible career in design. After graduation she joined the legendary design studio M&Co, collaborating with Tibor Kalman. She also cofounded the design studio Number Seventeen, where she worked on the identities for "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and "Saturday Night Live." Then in 2012, Emily joined Pentagram’s New York office as a partner.
In this interview we discover the surprisingly relatable story of how she got to work on identities for blockbuster movies. We also uncover the process her and her team take when working on logos and identities for movies. Then we end the interview with an honest discussion about how she was approached by Pentagram, and what it’s like to be a partner at one of the most well-know design agencies in the world.

When you start out as a designer you'll likely focus on the visuals. But as you begin to understand the role design plays in business, you'll start to see the value of good brand strategy, and will want to work closer with your clients to understand and solve deeper business challenges before you work on any design.
For some designers, as they grow in their career they become more interested in the strategy side of branding more than the design, and they may want to focus on that full time. But how can you make the transition from designer to full time brand consultant?
On this weeks podcast we learn how Matt Davies did it. Matt started out as a designer, built an agency and managed a team before becoming a full-time independant brand consultant. Ian interviews Matt to discover his journey, why he made the transition, how he works with clients, and how becoming a brand consultant has allowed him to earn a higher income too.

If you run a design business, the offering that you present to clients should be clear and easy to understand. Someone who has done this well is Evelyn Powers, the founder of Design Powers, where she focuses on branding, web design and print for small service based businesses.
Evelyn's primary offering is website design. A service that can often be shrouded in complex terminology. But she's made it feel easy, and effortless for her clients. Her website messaging is very clear, and the process easy to understand... nothing technical, just clear and simple steps for success.
But it doesn't end there. Her process is personalised to her, with each step having a unique name based on her surname 'Power'. She's not offering strategy sessions like everyone else, she "provides clarity with the Power Plan"... she doesn't just build a website, she "gets legit with the Power Launch". This allows Evelyn to stand out from the crowd.

When designing a logo, choosing the perfect colour palette can be a fun creative challenge. But once the logo is in use as part of a companies brand identity, ideally the colours you've selected look as consistent as possible in all instances, from digital devices through to printed collateral.
But how can you be sure the colours you see on your monitor are accurate? How can you ensure they will print the same? What can you do to ensure colour consistency as much as possibly across a brand identity?

Michael Shumate taught Graphic Design for twenty five years. In his second week of teaching, he told a student that the logo concept he was working on would not make a professional identity design. The student asked, “Why?” But Micheal couldn't provide an adequate answer, but was certain some principle was being violated.
He set out on a quest to discover the underlying principles of logo design. It's been a twenty-five year quest that lead Michael to look deeply at identity design and to seek for those constant, unchanging principles. Fads in art and design come and go. But principles don’t. Principles are enduring; they stand the test of time.
In this weeks episode Ian interviews Michael to discover what these principles are. We discover the 7 deadly sins of logo design, an effective approach to brainstorm ideas and more. We also discuss Michaels book 'Logo Design Theory', which is now on its second edition.

The world around us, and the culture we live in has a massive impact on all of us unconsciously. The study of Semiotics can allow us to understand this by looking at how meaning is created and communicated, which is knowledge we can use to design more effective logos and brand identities.
The origins of Semiotics lie in the academic study of how signs and symbols (visual and linguistic) create meaning. But now, it’s become a methodology for researching and analysing consumer behaviour and brand communications.
On this weeks podcast Ian interviews consumer psychologist, Dr Rachel Lawes to learn more about Semiotics, and how it can be used when developing a logo and brand identity.
Rachel is the author of Using Semiotics in Marketing, and is recognised as one of the original founders of commercial semiotics. She has supplied brand strategy and consumer insight to major brands in 20 countries, including Unilever, P&G, Kraft, Tesco, The Discovery Channel and many more.

If you want to be successful, you can’t just sit around and hope that opportunities will come your way. You need to work to attract them.
As an example, if you want to work on a specific style of work, or in a different speciality such as pattern design, you’re much more likely to attract that type of work if people can see your capabilities. It’s those who take action, and create the work they want to attract that become successful.
Meg Lewis is a great example of someone who takes action. She works hard to attract her own opportunities, which we discuss on this weeks podcast. We also discover how Meg found the confidence to be herself, and how she created a unique personal brand, mixing design, comedy & performance to make the world a happier place.

Brand Strategy has become a buzz word in design communities. Some designers, with very little experience are calling themselves brand strategists, but it’s a deep topic that can take years to master. How do you conduct a strategy session, and what do you provide as a deliverable?

Most designers work 1-on-1 with clients on custom projects based on their requirements. This means every new project is like starting from scratch… new proposals, contracts, emails and design work – most of which can never be used again since it’s tailored to that one client.
For most that approach is fine, but if you want to build a business that’s both profitable and scalable, there’s a better way. To grow your design business, you need to implement productised services using predictable systems. But how do you do that? On this weeks episode, Ian interviews Greg Hickman to find out.

Brands are all around us, but as the times change they need to adapt to keep relevant – if they don’t they’ll soon vanish from the high street. Kodak and Blackberry for example were once leaders in their field, but they failed to shift, becoming irrelevant in a fast changing world.
But how can brands prevent this from happening to them, and how can designers and agencies help their clients shift to avoid pending doom? On this weeks podcast Ian interviews branding expert, Allen Adamson to find out.
Allen is the author of the new book Shift Ahead, and co-founder and managing partner of brand strategy firm Metaforce. Prior to this Allen was Chairman of Landor Associates, a global branding firm, and he also worked in senior management positions at Ogilvy & Mather and DMB&B.

How many logos should you present to clients?
Back in 2013 Sean McCabe created a viral piece of content called ‘the one logo concept‘ that sparked controversy, suggesting that professional designers should present only one logo, and if a designer cannot determine what the most effective solution is… they should not be taking on clients.
Despite this, many well established designers don’t agree, and still present options. However, after hearing of the approach Melissa Yeager took the advice board, created her own version of the process, and now presents only the one logo to clients with great success. In this podcast Ian interview Melissa to learn how she’s been able to do this, taking a deep dive into her process to discover how its worked for her.
Melissa is a brand strategist and holistic identity designer for creative small businesses, based in Pennsylvania.
