On August 30th, history was made as a Nebraska volleyball match set a world record, with 92,000 people in attendance.
Lexi Rodriguez, the Cornhuskers' stellar libero, played in the match. Randy Gobel coordinated the infrastructure for the event at Memorial Stadium. Stephanie Thater-Brown, a former Huskers' All-American, attended the match with her daughter.
All three share stories from different perspectives on how Volleyball Day affected their lives.

Keegan Cook, Beth Launiere and Kevin Hambly have been stalwarts in Pac-12 women's volleyball leadership. Keegan departed for Minnesota in December, only to see his former Washington Huskies opt for the Big Ten in 2024. Beth is entering her 34th season at Utah, and will begin her final year in the Pac-12 before the Utes slide over to the Big XII. Kevin's Stanford squad is a National Championship contender, but faces an uncertain future in the Pac-12 or elsewhere.
All three coaches have played instrumental roles in the American Volleyball Coaches Association leadership, and all three join Terry Pettit for an in-depth conversation.

Julie Hermann walked-on to the University of Nebraska women's volleyball team, earned a scholarship and became an all-conference outside hitter who played in the Cornhuskers' first-ever NCAA Tournament win.
Following graduation, she moved into coaching, serving as an assistant at Wyoming and Georgia before landing the head job at Tennessee. Then, for 16 years she was second-in-command with the University of Louisville's athletic department. Her administrative career culminated by becoming the third-ever female Director of Athletics in the NCAA DIvision I ranks, when she was hired at Rutgers University.

Hall-of-Fame coach Shelton Collier and former Nebraska All-American outside hitter Gina Mancuso-Prososki discuss their roles with the Omaha franchise in the brand-new Pro Volleyball Federation League. '
The eight-team venture will begin play in February 2024 and the Omaha franchise will feature 14 players, many of whom played internationally and were extraordinary collegiate All-Americans.
The inaugural roster currently includes setter Sydney Hilley led Wisconsin to its first national championship in 2021 and Yossiana Pressley, a former National Player of the Year from Baylor.

Lyndsey Oates is beginning her 18th season as the head coach of the University of Northern Colorado's volleyball team. She has the most experienced team with the greatest depth UNC has ever had. They just returned from a trip to Italy and Greece where she had the opportunity to evaluate her talented freshman class. Lyndsey also chairs the NCAA Volleyball rules committee. She talks about a possible rule change on a double contact on the second ball.

Janice Kruger and Nancy Grant-Colson played on the earliest Women’s volleyball teams at Nebraska and helped build the foundation to remarkable consistency. Kruger went on to great success as a head volleyball coach at Nebraska-Omaha and the University of Maryland. Grant-Colson coached high school volleyball in Lincoln throughout her career as an educator. Dahlgren waked on to Nebraska volleyball, introduced the slide attack, and became Nebraska’s first National Player of the Year.
Trev Alberts is on a journey from All-American linebacker, to an injury-plagued career in the NFL, to a football analyst on ESPN and CBS, to then becoming the Athletic Director at Nebraska-Omaha where he was charged with making tough decisions to make an athletic department financially viable. For the last year, he has been the Director of Athletics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he inherited a football and men's basketball program that have struggled to win games in the Big Ten. Terry and Trev have an intimate discussion about Trev's vision for the Husker athletics.

Dave Shondell is beginning his 19th season as the head coach of Purdue's women's volleyball team. His father, Dr. Don Shondell played a significant role in developing coaches and promoting the sport while building and coaching the men's volleyball team at Ball State University. All three son's played for their father at Ball State, and all three have continued their father's legacy. Dave talks about an upcoming Celebration of Life for Dr. Don on March 19, and the attention to detail that he learned from his father. He also gives us insight into laying the foundation for a National Championship contender at Purdue and what Annie Drew's Olympic success has meant for his program.

Wisconsin's Sydney Hilley and Nebraska's Nicklin Hames met for the tenth time in college volleyball careers when Wisconsin defeated Nebraska for the Badgers' first NCAA National Championship. The two setters talk with Terry Pettit about their journey to become exceptional players and where they are headed next.
Gwen Pell Egbert has won national championships as a player and as a coach. She has trained two club players that went on to be captains of the U.S. Olympic volleyball teams. She was a setter hitter at the University of Nebraska, won six state volleyball championships as a high school coach, and is currently the volunteer coach at the University of Arizona. She talks with Terry about the unique challenges that face high school, club, and college coaches.

Dani Busboom Kelly won a national Championship as a libero for the University of Nebraska in 2006. She won a national championship as an assistant coach at Nebraska in 2015. Now she is in position to compete for a national championship as the head coach for the number 1 ranked University of Louisville women’s volleyball team. She talks with Terry about her team and her journey as a coach.

Jordan Larson started every match in the last three Olympics. During her professional career, she has won awards in international competitions as the best server, the best passer, the best defensive player, the best blocker, and the best attacker. She was the MVP in the Tokyo Olympics. She talks with Terry Pettit about her journey from Hooper, Nebraska to playing in three final fours at the University of Nebraska and becoming what Karch Kiraly has called the best female volleyball player in the history of the United States.

Karch Kiraly had already won three individual Olympic Gold Medals as a competitor when he became the head coach of the USA Women's National Volleyball Team in 2012. In August, Kiraly led his team to the Gold Medal in Tokyo Olympics. Kiraly talks about his leadership group and the culture that was created that allowed the team to flourish despite several unforeseen challenges during the Olympics.

Bruce Rasmussen has been the Director of Athletics at Creighton University for close to twenty-eight years. He has hired exceptional coaches and led fundraising efforts that allowed Creighton to have some of the best basketball, volleyball, baseball, and soccer facilities in the country. But it is Bruce's servant leadership that puts the well-being of the student-athlete ahead of athletic performance that has defined his tenure at Creighton. Today we are losing a teacher.
Today we are losing someone who taught us the difference between the light in a Renoir and the light in a Monet.
Today we are losing some who taught us about the “shock of recognition” Nathaniel Hawthorne felt when he first met Herman Melville.
Today we are losing someone who said there is a difference In whether you spell gray with an e or a.
Today we are losing the person who taught us about the golden rectangle And why we are pleased when we see a nautilus shell or lines in just the right proportion.
Today we are losing the person who introduced us to e.e. cummings and these lines from Robert Frost that begin:
“One ought not to care, as much as you and I, when the birds fly round the house and seem to say goodbye.”
But of course, we do care, that was his point.
Today we are losing a coach.
Today we are losing someone who taught us a fireman’s carry, a jab step, A summersault at the end of the pool.
Today we are losing a sponsor for the letter-club, the Latin club, The student council and the band.
At the University, the graduates wait with diplomas, eager to become Engineers, attorneys, entrepreneurs, and MBAs.
Life awaits them with guaranteed contracts, stock options, and cars with exotic names. But who is going to teach us about why the boy in Faulkner’s short story Refuses to shoot the bear?
Who is going to introduce us to language that goes crazy?
Who is going to show us the innate beauty in mathematics?
Who is going to tell us about Crazy Horse and Willa Cather?
Who when we’ve done our best and things don’t go our way . . .
Who when we’ve studied hard and don’t pass the test . . .
Who when we get open in the big game, and take the last shot . . .
And miss . . .
Who is going to put their arm around us and tells us That everything will be OK?
Today we are losing a teacher.

Steve Morgan coached at Ogallala High School for 45 years. During his tenure the Indians won 984 matches, three state championships and were runners-up four times. Morgan talks about becoming a high school coach after serving two years in the military where he was introduced to the game. He coached both of his daughters and his youngest, Lyndsay was his assistant for seven years. No high school volleyball coach has impacted the culture of great volleyball in rural Nebraska as much as Steve Morgan.
In part two of being interviewed by John Baylor, Terry Pettit talks about training leadership, and how extraordinary leadership led to Nebraska's first national championship. He also talks about how volleyball has changed, and what we might look for in the future of the game.

John Baylor, who has been the play by play broadcaster for Nebraska Volleyball for twenty-six years has seen more Nebraska volleyball matches live than any other person. He has also evolved into one of the best sportscasters in the country. He talks with host Terry Pettit about that evolution.

Barbie Young Gutshall and Janet Kruse Sellon grew up in small towns in Nebraska in the 1980s. Both went on to play volleyball at the University of Nebraska and played on teams that advanced to National Championship matches. They also graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School, but their paths to becoming physicians and mentoring women have been different. Today they talk about how athletic completion prepared them for the challenges they face on a daily basis.
