I think building confidence while fly fishing can be tricky, whether it be trying new flies, new techniques, or even new spots. I think the important thing is to remember what you already know and then build from there.

This message came to me this morning on the treadmill. A story of this past summer (summer 2020), when someone called me a mess. And I realize their judgement in that moment doesn't define who I am. They didn't see what I had been through to get to that point, the hurt I have felt. But God's promise and purpose is so much great than that pain.

2020 was a rough year, in fact so rough that it almost killed me. However, the things I went through in 2020 while still sometimes difficult to sallow, have brought me so much closer to the Lord. I share my brief story and thoughts as I went from being on the verge of suicide to walking into 2020 stronger than I have ever been.

Jig Hooks or Standard Hooks Which are better? I did a little experiment comparing the two when it comes to swinging nymphs. The results are actually quite substantial, but I will let you decide for yourself.
Pocket water is often the most overlooked water types by most anglers, however fish do tend to hold in this water and they are fairly easy to fool too. This can be an excellent way to get away from the crowds and enjoy some peace and good fishing...if you know how to approach it of course! Book Club 7 is all about how to read water and find fish. With just a couple tips you can improve your water reading ability and put more fish in the net.
It can be so easy to be envious of those who do wicked deeds because often they look so successful! However, we don't always know what they are going through and God will deal with the wicked and punish or act to turn them back to him. God has a plan for us all sometimes the droughts are a crucial part of it!
In this book club we chat euro nymphing tips. This is not a how to euro nymphing talk, but tips for people who already have some background in euro nymphing. If you would like to hear a how to talk please comment and let me know!
Now this is a debate that can get heated sometimes! Though I do think there is a time and a place for both fly fishing methods, if you want to be successful trout fishing. In this book club I break down the pros and the cons of each method and when I prefer to use each.
Fly fishing gear is not a one size fits all approach, so you have to figure out what works for you based on goals, budget, and stuff like that. However, I do think it helps to understand what other people fish with and why, which is why in this book club I break down the gear I use and why. More specifically I talk about the rod, reel, and line combos I use for euro nymphing, indicator nymphing, and dry fly fishing.
Do you love God? God loves you, but do you love God? We are so quick to change for other people, but why are we so slow to change for God?
Romans 8 is my go to chapter for when I am down and need encouragement. Here is what I got from it on my last time reading through it.
Book Club 3 is all about rigging. Different leader setups ups and the pros and cons of both, as well as fly spacing for nymphing rigs. Also, featuring leaders for indicator nymphing, dry/dropper fishing, and dry fly fishing.
We all struggle, its just a fact. It's important to remember that struggle is not a step back nor is it something to be ashamed of. It's a part of the process.
In the second book club we talk about adjusting your fly fishing approach to fish density, fish species, and hatch activity. There are a lot of little details in the second half of Chapter One in Tactical Fly Fishing that can have a major impact on your success on the water.
The first book club is here and I break down the first half of chapter one on what adjustments and plans to use when fishing in different water quality situations. I cover water clarity and water temperature and the adjustments Devin recommends for both, as well as some personal knowledge I have acquired over the years.

A while back I changed the name of all my socials from Beyond the River to just my name. I did this because I didn't want to front anymore. I didn't want to be something I am not, I just wanted to be me.
Fly color and how often to change a fly are interesting concepts to explore regardless of which technique you are using. On my latest trip I focused on changing fly color often and trying to figure out which color was working that day. Color of the day? Black!
The greatest failure one can make is to shake off a mistake as a fluke situation. Every failure no matter how small has a lesson. Find that lesson and learn it. That is how we grow as people.
Probably the question that might annoy fishermen the most is "Where do you fish?" And the main reason this question is so annoying is because its truthfully so reason to find a good spot. I break down who to find great spots in little time.
The quest for trophy trout begins! I manage to rangle in a nice brown trout on the Head Banger sculpin. I break down my approach, water type I found fish, and my general thoughts on the days mission.

My first trip fishing the surf for Lake Erie steelhead started off slow, but turned into a lights out day after some minor adjustments. I walk you step by step through my thought process, the events that unfolded, and how I was able to finally put some beautiful fish in the net.
Musky rod back in hand and this time on a lake to find one of these big predators. Fought the elements all day with high winds and cold temps. Found one musky that was game, but I came up just a little short.

These issues occur all across the United States and one of the worst examples I have seen is in Colorado. I chat with my new friend Neil about the situation over there, and how we can make fishing great again.

Ever think about becoming a guide? I definitely have and veteran guide Joe Demaldris of Cross Current Guide Services passed along a few words of wisdom on what it takes to make it as a guide. Joe has been guiding for almost three decades now and he and his team were just awarded Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Outfitter of the Year for 2019. Was great chatting with Joe and I definitely learned a lot and I hope you do too!
It was a crazy weekend out on the water for the 2019 PA trout opener. I could wait for Saturday to come I had to sneak out the afternoon before and chase after a few fish to satisfy my itch. It was definitely a great afternoon out on the water.
I did something a little different with my fishing adventure yesterday. I forced myself into a competition like setting in order to work on my abilities fishing to slightly pressured fish.
Got out after class yesterday to chase after some wild browns on the fly. Euro nymphing was my tactic of choice and I had quite the afternoon.
Kelly was born in Missoula, MT and a graduate of the University of Montana. Raised in Frenchtown she occupied the Clark Fork and the small tributaries that define it throughout her childhood and spent most summers with family fishing, camping, and riding horseback along the Jocko River just north of Missoula. After serving in the Air Force she returned to Montana and pursued a career as a guide. Her positive reinforcement, guidance, and persistence benefit new, intermediate, or experienced anglers. In her off time you’ll find her traveling around the state with a fly rod in hand.

Check your ego at the door. There is already so much hate and negativity in this world the last thing I want is you that to be brought out on the water. I am down to fish with anyone, just leave the ego at home and lets support each other.
Battle tough conditions yesterday at the final event of the National Fly Fishing League's Deep Freeze series. Manage to get into some fish, but definitely not without a little struggle.
Stocked trout definitely serve a purpose in trout fishing and in conservation efforts, but I think it is important that we don’t overstep its purpose.

The impact fly fishing can have on someone's life is remarkable and Scott Low is living proof of that. After leaving alcohol behind, Scott found happiness in his music, family and fly fishing. I really loved what Scott was all about and think he offers a powerful message.
