As communities across America grapple with tension and uncertainty, Montgomery County's 11th annual Friendship Picnic offers a powerful antidote to division. Nestled under the canopy of trees at Wheaton Regional Park, residents from all walks of life gather to celebrate what connects us rather than what separates us.
"Whatever happens around us here in Montgomery County, we're going to make it work across our various diverse lines, across cultural lines, across religious lines," declares Jim Stowe, Director of the Office of Human Rights and driving force behind the event. His vision of Dr. King's "beloved community" isn't just rhetoric—it's being lived out through food, music, and genuine human connection.
The magic of the picnic lies in its simplicity: "Zero drama, 100% fun, 100% food, 100% music." Children form instant friendships at the reptile petting zoo while adults sample unfamiliar cuisines and engage in conversations that go beyond superficial greetings. County Council members, public safety officials, and department representatives mingle with residents, breaking down barriers between government and the people it serves.
When asked why friendship matters, responses range from the profound to the practical. "Friendship is the family we choose for ourselves," reflects a visitor from New York. "We learn together and we grow together." A young boy offers the simplest truth: "Without friendship we would all be lonely."
In these divided times, the Friendship Picnic stands as a testament to what's possible when we focus on our shared humanity. As County Councilmember Andrew Friedson puts it, the event shows "hope at a time of despair" and demonstrates "what belonging and community really looks like."

When Gary Edell started making homemade potato chips for his son Brian's baseball team gatherings in 2009, he never imagined those crispy, thin-sliced snacks would eventually become a thriving business competing against industry giants.
From an operation that once produced 20 pounds of potatoes in two hours in Gary's kitchen, they now process 2,000 pounds per hour and can be found in over 950 stores including Giant, Wegmans, and Fresh Market.

Melissa Rosenberg, executive director of the American Autism Society (AUSOM) joins the latest episode of the What’s Happening MoCo podcast to mark the end of Autism Acceptance Month (April). According to Rosenberg, nearly 1 in 43 children received an Autism diagnosis in the state of Maryland. Her organization, AUSOM, provides free guidance and resources to assist people with Autism and their families. In addition, the podcast hears from the County’s Autism Voucher Program which provides financial support for services critical to students with Autism and their families.
During the informative episode available today, Rosenberg’s colleague Kristen Letnick, resources coordinator for AUSOM, shares her experiences serving people impacted by Autism as a person diagnosed with Autism. Her unique perspective and extensive history as a counselor added value to the discussion which covered topics such as how to identify people with autism, when a family should have their child diagnosed, and the characteristics associated with the condition.

Kisha Davis, Montgomery County’s health officer, returns to the What’s Happening MoCo podcast during National Public Health Week to share the good news that the County earned recognition as one of the healthiest counties in America. In the latest episode of the podcast, Dr. Davis also shared updates on dealing with COVID-19, social isolation, heart disease and other challenges to living healthier, longer lives.
Larissa Johnson, a County-based laughter yoga instructor, also joined the episode. Ms. Johnson leads listeners through a lively laughter yoga session. Ms. Johnson said that just two minutes of laughter equals the same cardio benefit as a 20-minute run.

Current and potential future owners of electric vehicles generally have many questions as the mobile technology evolves. In the latest episode of the What’s Happening MoCo podcast, host Derrick Kenny learns about electric cars, benefits to owners and an incentive program that will involve Montgomery County to make electric vehicle ownership easier.
The episode’s guests include Brian Booher, senior planning specialist—zero emissions vehicles (ZEV) for the County Department of Environmental Protection.
“Over the last year, 12 percent all the newly registered vehicles [in the County] are electric, and we are expecting that number to increase over the next few years,” said Mr. Booher.
Mr. Booher said that, when it comes to operating an electric vehicle, most things are the same except for “refueling.” Electric cars do not refuel—they charge.
Atiq Panjshiri, the right-of-way plan review manager, and Linda Kobylski, the land development division chief, of the County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) also are part of the podcast. They talk about EV charging options and raise awareness of a program that makes it easier for residents to charge at home.
The DPS program on EV charging stations in the right-of-way allows residents that do not have the space on their property to install a charging station to create a station in the public right of way. The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair was born out of the desire of 4-H leaders to provide a show for the 4-H members in the County. The Montgomery County Fair is now one of the largest county fairs in Maryland. It operates with the help of more than 2,000 volunteers each year.

The What’s Happening MoCo podcast visited the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds for a conversation with Marty Svrcek, executive director of the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds, about the upcoming County Agricultural Fair that will take place Aug. 13-21 in Gaithersburg. As the County warms up to encouraging vaccination numbers and its lowest COVID-19 positivity statistics since the health crisis began, the latest episode of the “What’s Happening MoCo” podcast introduces the redefinition of the “new normal.” Jerome Fletcher, one of the County’s assistant chief administrative officers, will provide details of the updated County restrictions starting Friday, May 28, and the continuation of economic recovery efforts.
