The world of Podcasts is changing, and I’m not sure I want this podcast to be part of that new world. But don’t delete this just yet.

BBC television now broadcasts the recording of its podcasts, such as the Uncloaked series that follows the Traitors TV show.

Netflix has bought up some big names in Podcasting, because for them it’s relatively cheap.

And there are just SO many podcasts out there, it’s hard to keep one going with the quality that’s now expected.

Particularly since almost every podcast is now on video.

When I started podcasting, exactly 20 years ago this year with SeaKayakPodcasts.com, the video element would be unthinkable. YouTube was still small; now it’s the biggest player in Podcasting. Spotify is close behind.

And almost every celebrity has their own podcast. They get the listeners. And as a consequence they get the advertisers. I don’t mind about either, none of my podcasts have ever taken advertising, and I know this is a niche listen. But it’s getting harder to commit the time to it and still run the YouTube channel.

I have to pick, and I’ve picked the YouTube. Video has killed the radio star.

I don’t watch podcasts, I listen to them. That’s how I feel they work best, on a long drive or while walking the dog. I can’t commit to something I don’t watch or believe in.

If some of my future videos lend themselves to becoming audio podcasts I will release them as such, so please don’t delete this from your podcast player just yet. But don’t hold your breath for exciting new guests.

Thanks for being a listener. Bye... for now.

Dr Clarkson is an NHS cardiologist at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Our previous interview video had more than a million views.

This follow-up video podcast, a year later, has two parts. In the first, Dr Clarkson outlines how we should all assess our own cardiac risks and explains more about the decision whether or not to take the drugs statins.

The second part is about returning to exercise after a heart attack or being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.

This full interview is available as a video.

After careers in the English and Danish health systems, Sally Walker works as a consultant on hormones and nutrition based on the island of Lanzarote.

She also gives talks at the sports resort Club la Santa where we stayed in December 2024. As you’ll hear, she’s an advocate of older men using testosterone replacement therapy, particularly those who try to stay fit. Personally, I’m much more cautious about the whole subject, but I did get my testosterone tested.

After listening to her talk on the subject we sat down and recorded this conversation which is available as a YouTube video and audio podcast at Always Another Adventure.

Runners and cyclists know that, as we age, we should do more strength training to protect our bones, ligaments and balance. But what sort of training is best, and how to do it safely? Those questions led me to Emma at Wolfhouse Gym near Fort William in the Scottish highlands. As well as having a British record and world championship win, Emma has developed a specialism in coaching over 50s who want to handle the inevitable changes of ageing. There's a video version of this podcast and a shorter video in the Older Athlete Series which includes Emma's demonstrations of many of the things we talk about here.

'The Midlife Cyclist' is a book which reshaped the thinking of many cyclists. Published in 2021, it is in part a scientific analysis of the inevitable changes associated with ageing. It also offers gentle encouragement on how to cope and manage these changes, to keep fit and healthy into older age.

In this podcast, the author Phil Cavell talks about the lessons he learnt through researching the book, and goes into detail about his new book The Cycling Addiction' which is due in 2025. This month I'm sharing an episode of different podcast, the Adventure Audio Podcast, in which I am the guest.

I was surprised when I was asked to contribute, given the two hosts, are extremely accomplished outdoors people. But since I ask others to share their stories, I felt I ought to accept.

Peter Hockenhull and Laval St. Germain were probing in their questions, and I probably shared a lot more about myself than I normally would on my own podcast. I hope you enjoy it. Normal service will resume soon.

Dr Peter Clarkson, is an NHS Cardiologist based in the Scottish highlands, and a very keen and talented rock climber. He has also competed in triathlons.

I’ve been trying to answer a question; 'how hard is too hard' when it comes to exercise for an older athlete? How close to maximum heart rate should we be hiking, running and cycling? What are the warning signs we're going too hard, too often?

Dr Clarkson agreed to shoot a video with me for The Older Athlete Series and we met at The Ledge climbing gym in Inverness. You can see the video I made from this chat on YouTube. This podcast is our whole interview with only minor edits to tidy the conversation, and it's also available to watch in video.

Get your 2024 off to an exciting start by planning to cycle 100 miles this summer in Scotland's friendliest, free century ride.
Ride to the Sun is a (semi)-organised, summer solstice 100 mile ride through the night, from the English border city of Carlisle to the village of Cramond just north of Edinburgh in Scotland, aiming to arrive for sunrise around 4:20am.

We’ll hear from organisers Gary Cameron and Fraser Maxwell, plus learn how to organise the logistics of this point-to-point ride. I'll also try to understand why it appeals to a range of cyclists, whether they're tackling their first century or riding it as part of a 300 mile Audax.

I've been at this event three times and it gets better each year.

The parallels between solo ocean racing and other ultra endurance sports are not immediately obvious.  But as I listened to Pip Hare talk about her goal to complete the Vendee Globe - solo around the world race - for the second time, age 50, I heard striking and surprising parallels between this multi-million euro sport and simple ultra running or cycling.  At which Pip also excels.  She is part of the only team - a pair - to ever complete the running, cycling and sailing stages of the Three Peaks Yacht Race.

So is it the hardest world's endurance event?  She'll be racing flat out, constantly looking to maximise speed relative to weather conditions, never truly able to sleep, for almost three months.  So it's tough.

The first episode of a new podcast series which you'll find here

https://pctpodcast.buzzsprout.com/

Twenty years ago we hiked this 2,600 mile wilderness trail from Mexico to Canada, across baking deserts and snowy mountain passes.  At the time we were told it was the 'classic era' of the PCT.  Now numbers have risen from a few hundred to thousands.

More at PCTpodcast.com

I made recordings with people along the way, but lost them until recently.  Now I've produced a limited podcast series recalling at this classic time and also looking at the PCT today with people who know it well.  We'll hear from a couple who hiked the trail twenty years after us and only just made it to the border as forest fires engulfed the area.

This is the first episode of that series and other episodes are also live now.

In the summer of 2022, Cory Jones led a group of six paddlers through the Yukon territory in Canada.  Their group of six covered 1000 miles, through two time zones and six river systems.  However, the adventure wasn't exactly harmonious eventually splitting into two groups.  Age was the dividing line.

This generational divide was echoed among communities of First Nation people they met along the rivers.  As well as describing a tough adventure, Cory speaks frankly about all these differences and the impact climate change has already brought to their environment and way of life.

Fifty episodes seems a good time to bring the first series of Always Another Adventure to a close.

When will series two start - I don’t know yet. It’ll be when I have the energy and enthusiasm to chase guests who interest me and start recording with them.

In the meantime my efforts are directed towards the Always Another Adventure YouTube channel. Please check it out if you haven’t already. Oh and stay subscribed to the podcasts please, then when they return a new one will drop into your phone.

You might like to know 89% of you download to a mobile device. 69% of you use an iPhone. 49% of you use Apple Podcasts. 17% use an Android phone. Very few of you listen on a smart speaker - too few to count.

85% are in Europe, 8% North America and 4% Oceana.

Since starting in March 2020 those fifty episodes have received more than 65 thousand downloads, and I hope they’ll continue while we all wait for series two.

Each episode gets about 1500 downloads with the single most popular episode being Donnie Campbell’s record breaking self propelled Munro round with well over 2000 listens. Mark Beaumont, Emily Chapel and Josh Ibbett are not far behind.

They’re all still available for download and I expect those numbers to increase. Sea Kayak Podcasts, which I stopped updating a decade ago, received 27 thousand downloads over the same period.

So I hope I’ll be back with series two, and although I can’t say when, I hope you’ll join me over on YouTube or at AlwaysAnotherAdventure.com I’m Simon Willis, thanks for listening. Bye.

Patrick Winterton made the first successful kayak crossing of the widest part of North Sea in a double kayak, together with Olly Hicks, retracing the route of the wartime 'Shetland Bus' from Scotland to Norway.
I recorded this podcast shortly after his return and it ran on another podcast series Sea Kayak Podcasts.  It is such an extraordinary adventure I decided it had earned a place among these great adventurers, and I hope you agree.  I also update the episode with a significant development that happening in the intervening years.

Nick Butter ran a marathon in every country as recognised by the UN, all 196 of them, and completed the adventure within two years.   His book Running the World has just been released yet he's off on another adventure.  Now he's tackling 100 marathons in 100 days, running the length of Italy, a country badly hit by Covid and, like the rest of Europe, heading into its second lockdown.  We chat with Nick in the back of his converted van the day he ran from Rome to the coast.

It’s a bike race so hard, even the organisers weren’t sure anyone could complete it.  Competitors had to carry everything they needed, from food to fuel, to be entirely self-sufficient, right from the start.  No outside help was allowed.

Josh Ibbett rode the 2000km off-road bikepacking event, from Land's End to John O'Groats in 7 days and 17 hours.  This is how he did it.

The world of self supported, ultra distance cycle racing can seem a strange sub culture.  Emily Chappell has captured the essence of being one of these sleep deprived, exhausted riders in her book Where there’s a Will.  She came to this odd type of racing after being a cycle courier in London, an experience captured in her first book What Goes Around.  In this podcast Emily's reads from both books and these excerpts guide our conversation.

The Highway Code is changing and we all have the chance to influence those changes. If you ever ride a bike (or for that matter drive or walk down a street) it is worth having your say.

Duncan Dollimore, the Head of Advocacy and Campaigns at Cycling UK, explains what’s proposed, where the controversy lies, and how you can influence the new highway code before October 2020. Too often we feel those in power make decisions we can’t influence. This time, we can.

Kevin Woods is only third person to have completed a winter round of Scotland's Munros, mountains over 300pft high.  That's 282 mountains in 97 days in the long, soaking wet, depths of a Scottish winter.

Living in his van, with only a few friends for support, Kevin had to support himself.  As if walking 1400 miles wasn't enough, he had to shop, cook, dry kit, plan routes and check weather himself, then drive to the ranges which looked most promising.

He only just finished as the Coronavirus lockdown came into force.

For those of us who love swimming in crystal clear water, beside white sand beaches, the Outer Hebrides is a dream destination. Colin Macleod swims there daily (albeit just short dips at the moment during the current restrictions, and the Coastguard is informed).

Colin shares stories about swimming and swim camping around the islands off the Outer Hebrides; about being part of the relay team that swam sixty miles from St Kilda; about being rescued from an attempt to swim from the Isle of Lewis to the mainland. Colin also tells what it was likely to successfully complete that epic swim, only the second person to achieve it, heading back home across The Minch.

He also has a few suggestions for those who want to dip their toes into wild swimming. Our chat was recorded a couple of weeks ago at the start of the COVID19 restrictions.
