If you're trying to control the other person and you think they're trying to control you it really doesn't change people's behavior. "You don't have to tell your whole story which can be painful. The beauty of that is you don't even have to have all the memories and details of your whole story and still be able to get some good work done. The beauty of that is you don't even have to be ready to talk about your story as long as you're ready to go inward because a lot of the work is happening inward. We're just prompting the brain and the body to do what it does naturally, which is to heal." - Melissa Dumaz, LMFT

She explains how your feed is a byproduct of your activity because the algorithm will give you more of what you spend the most time on.
If you spend a lot of time reading and commenting on posts that are talking negatively about you or your lifestyle - you will get more content with that very same content.
If you feel triggered by accounts promoting diets when you have struggled with disordered eating - you can unfollow them.
If you are brought back to a trauma every time a family name's post appears on your feed - you can mute their account.
Check out this episode for more tips, why this is important and get your permission to do start taking action.

The year 2020 hasn't been a walk in the park for anyone. The last couple weeks have been overwhelming for Danielle Craig personally. On this episode, she talks about some stressful events that have added to this, including the death off her uncle.
After days of trying to numb the emotions and "take the edge off," Danielle realized that was exactly what she was doing.
She read from Brene Brown's book 'Dare to Lead' these words -
“We can not selectively numb emotion - if we numb the dark, we numb the light. If we take the edge off pain and discomfort - we are taking the edge off joy, love and belonging.”
In this episode, Danielle shares the tools she started implementing to find comfort instead of numbing.

You'll hear how to listen with empathy, listen for learning and how to listen while withholding judgement. Bringing your authentic opinions to conversations will also help you learn and grow as a human being.
Plus, would you shake a known murder suspect's hand? Hear why a reporter did just that.

"What I really want to get down to is the core of how we see ourselves regardless of what our appearance actually is. I want us to spend a whole lot more time in our bodies, loving our bodies than resenting our bodies, resenting whether that is the weight, or the height, or the jean size, or the bra size - or aging." - Danielle Craig
Scientific research shows how we think about aging can actually impact how we physically age. In this episode of Happiness in Progress, Danielle shares some new thoughts and ideas to help you reset your mindset around aging.
You'll also hear the scientific research that explains why we age and what can slow the process down. And how changing your mindset about aging can actually decrease your risk of dementia.

"You appreciate less and less and you feel that they owe you more and more. If they're your partner, your husband, your wife then they should do this. You stop seeing them as their own person and you see them as somebody who needs to fulfill all your wants, desires, hopes, dreams, etc.

No matter what mistakes, or losses, or pain we've experienced in the past - that there's still beauty in this particular moment and there's still hope and potential in every moment. In this episode, Danielle talks about how to add grace to our goals. In many cases, when we set a goal, we are chasing the feeling we believe our goal will give us.
Unfortunately, because of the way our human brains work, when we do reach the achievement - we find ourselves on the hedonic treadmill. It’s enough for a moment, then it’s not enough anymore. Now we need the next best thing to feel happy, confident and respected. When we live our lives this way, nothing is ever good enough. We could achieve the world - and none of it would be good enough.
Danielle has created three steps to help you add grace to your goals and mindset.

Today's episode is with one of my favorite bloggers, Amanda Rodriguez. You may recognize her as the Dude Mom. Amanda is a humor blogger at dudemom.com. She is the mom of three sons - or dudes. She's married to her college sweetheart. She has contributed to other websites and programs, including the Today Show.
Amanda's first book is out TODAY! You can grab it where you buy your favorite books. It's called 50 Things to do in Baby's First Year: The First-time Mom's Guide for your Baby, Yourself and Your Sanity. The book is different than your typical baby book - because it ties in humor and real, simple tips you didn't realize you needed. From nursing and teething to managing anxiety and finding support.
I wanted to talk to Amanda because she is someone who has found so much joy in raising her kids. In this episode, we talk about the good times and the harder times with the dudes. We also chat about how losing her mom recently has impacted her, how she's stayed mom while dealing with grief and the simple things she - and her mom for that matter - did to cultivate a strong bond with their kids.

Welcome to Episode 100! You are going to love this episode because I have included a soundbite from each guest I’ve had on the show. This is a quick paced, motivation-packed episode.
At the end of each episode, I ask my guests - “What is one tip to finding more joy in the everyday - during the good days, the bad days and the in between?”
I’ve taken all my guests answers to that one question and have them edited here for you. However, especially in the early days, I wasn’t always consistent about asking the question - so some of my former guests have sound bites that did not come after my specific question. But they are equally motivating.
While editing this podcast, I’ve just had so much gratitude for the amazing people I’ve had on the podcast. Each of them really showed up with wisdom, life experience and a desire to make your life better. I am so thankful to them and their sacrifice of time and willingness to share what they’ve learned in their lives.
I am also thankful to all of you for being here, downloading, rating, sharing - every single time you do that it allows me to keep doing this work.
All of the guests' soundbites are in order of their episodes.

In this world we’ve been taught we need to BE someone to be important. Maybe a little bit taught, but also a little built in.
Have you heard about the ego? The ego is the part of us that tells us we need to be someone, do something and have something to matter. The ego tells us “YOU matter when you accomplish. YOU matter when you own expensive stuff. YOU matter when you have a fancy title.”
This is one of the reasons we cling so tightly to our identities.
But placing our identity - or worth - in something is risky because when it fails us - we can feel empty and worthless. We can question who we are and where we belong.
In this episode, Danielle talks about how our worth is not attached to our identity. She says we are worthy, not because of our achievements, titles or belongings - but because of our innate worth.
Plus, hear about how our identities hold us back. How to re-write the story you've been telling yourself since you were a child.

Mikaela is an elementary school teacher. She is the 2017 winner of the limelight video contest… in which she told her story - living and teaching with a form of dwarfism and blindness.
Mikaela teachers lower elementary school children - most of whom - she is smaller than. She also does this with a visual impairment that causes her to be legally blind.
But she doesn’t let this hold her back.
When I first reached out to Mikaela, I thought we would chat about the difficulties of dealing with these disabilities - or disadvantages. BUT I realized - some of the biggest difficulties she deals with are less to do with dwarfism and blindness — but instead - her classroom. So we talked about both!
In this episode, you’re going to hear a lot about the challenges that come with being a teacher in the 21st century, how you can help your child be successful socially and how Mikaela deals with violent outbursts in her classroom.
PLUS, we’ll talk about how Mikaela has always been optimistic. Her secret to having the happiness skill and how to start loving the very person you are today.

"It’s not just about the bathing suit. It’s about the fact that so many women feel this way and it’s just ridiculous."
Today’s guest is one of my favorite bloggers and Instagramers. Carly Anderson is someone who is changing the way women see themselves and what it means to have a swimsuit body.
Carly is the woman behind Lipgloss and Crayons. She is a former elementary school teacher. She’s also the winner of the Iris Award from the Mom 2.0 Community for the 2019 Instagram of the year. She's also a mom.
What we really focus on today is her movement #JustWearTheSuit. It’s a campaign calling for women of all shapes and sizes to just put the swimsuit on. This has gained so much traction it was recently featured in both Parade and People Magazines.
We talk about a lot including:
- How she had an anxiety attack the first time she put on a swimsuit
- How she went from being a person who had been to the pool a few times as an adult to someone who owns more than 80 swimsuits
- Real tips to start wearing your own swim suit
- How to embrace a thought disrupter when your insecurities are taking over
- Carly’s perspective as a former school teacher who has seen courageous five year olds turn into insecure 12 year olds

Emily Norton is one of my favorite people. In days, her first book, The Seven Longest Yards — written with her husband Chris Norton - will hit book shelves.
Emily’s story went viral when she helped her husband Chris walk across the stage for graduation… then again when she helped him walk down the wedding aisle. Their story has been shared in People Magazine, on Good Morning America, the Today show, CNN and many more.
Chris and Emily have been on the podcast before - where we talked about the football accident that paralyzed him from the neck down. Listen to it here.
This episode is different. I wanted to focus on Emily. Today we talk about something she hasn’t really talked about publicly until this book - her battle with depression.
She gets real here on the podcast AND in their book about why it took her so long to come to grips with the fact that she needed help, what life is like since getting help and what she’s learned from the experience.
The second half of this episode we focus on Emily’s incredible work with children in the foster care system. She and Chris have adopted FIVE kids now and still bring in foster children. I love hearing about why she does this, great tips to work with children from painful circumstances and why she believes she’s called to do this work.

"It's amazing what changing your perspective just a little bit does to your entire outlook in life." - Courtney Paulk
Courtney Paulk is a powerhouse in everything she does. In the office, she is the first female president of an 80-lawyer law firm, Hirschler. In her free time she is known for her ultra-distance open water swimming feats.
She is one of only 201 people who has completed the Triple Crown of Open-water swimming… and only the fifth person to do it twice.
Courtney blogs about her feats on her blog Swim & Tonic.
This is such a fun conversation with Courtney because open swimming is so fascinating. She talks a lot about what it’s like to swim for 33 hours straight — and everything that goes into that — the mental game, dealing with disappointments, how gratitude even works when you’ve been swimming in cold water for hours — and hilarious hallucinations.
The conversation bounces back and forth between her work as a lawyer and as a swimmer because so much of what she has learned about herself in the water plays a role in her fast-paced life.

"I understand what it means to not want to go on. I understand what it means to feel like you’ll never be yourself again and your family would be better off without you. I understand what depression in that context means." - Jane Clayson Johnson
Jane Clayson Johnson is an award-winning journalist known for her work on CBS News as a co-host on The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel, ABC News and on the nationally syndicated NPR program, On Point.

This is what we talked about today - mental illness. What she learned from writing this book.. and we talked about her own experience.
A big takeaway of this conversation is to start talking - talking about your experience with mental illness or asking someone you are worried about really hard questions. We talk about the stigma of mental illness, how people take depression on as an identity or character flaw -- how toxic perfectionism plays a role and what it’s like to be on the outside looking in.

Does money buy happiness?
You know we’ve always been told that money can’t buy happiness.
Yet, we set our entire lives… I mean from the time we are little kids… around money. We go to school, to learn how to be constructive members of society… we talk about what we want to be when we grow up… and all of that comes down to how we’ll make money.
Money is a HUGE part of our lives. Money pays for the roof over our head, the food to eat, the clothes to wear.
Those are the BASIC necessities of life. And we need money to pay for them.
In this episode, Danielle Craig explores what research has shown about whether money can buy happiness, the hedonic treadmill and the best ways to spend money to equal more happiness. Plus, the number one way you should not spend money if you want to be happier.

"Life is a gift and even when it’s at its worst there’s opportunity to find love, and happiness and hope and gratitude again." - Claudia Gerbasi
I am so thrilled to introduce you to today’s guest Claudia Ann Gerbasi- Ruggiere-Donovan. Claudia lost her husband on the day many of us watched terror unfolding on the television, September 11th. Her husband, Bart was working at the World Trade Center that morning.

Claudia now lives in New York City with her husband, John and their daughter.
I absolutely loved talking to Claudia - and I’m so thankful she shared her story. We talked about so much - including losing her husband, the struggles that come from being a widow, friendship and how the group they dubbed 'The Widows Club' helped each other find joy again.

We are twenty something days into January — and I’ve really been trying to understand habits.

“I ask people - when do you make your best choices? When do you have your biggest inspiration? When are you creative? They’ll say things like ‘in the shower’ or ‘taking a bath’ or 'going for a walk in nature.' They bring up places in their lives when they aren’t stressed. That’s when the inspiration comes.” - Nick Ortner
Nick Ortner is the CEO of The Tapping Solution. He is the New York Times best selling author of The Tapping Solution.
Nick's goal is to empower people to live stress free lives with EFT. He’s worked to bring it to the mainstream. In fact, you may have seen him on national programs like Dr. Oz and the Today Show talking about it.
If you are new to tapping - and maybe it seems a little weird to you - give it a chance.
In this episode you will hear how it works to help you deal with stress, triggers, even PTSD.
Specifically in this episode we talk about how it can help you conquer your goals by changing your belief systems.

Today we're kicking off Season 2 of Happiness in Progress with a guest all the way from New Zealand - Jake Bailey.
You’ve probably seen him online. His story has gone viral several times since he gave a speech at his high school graduation three years ago. At that time - he had just been diagnosed with cancer… and had been told he had two weeks to live.
Jake is now a public speaker, the author of 'What Cancer Taught Me,' the subject of a documentary and a weekly columnist.
I loved talking to Jake. He talks us through his fast moving cancer and some of the thoughts he had as a teenager given two weeks to live. We talk about what cancer taught him, how he craved the monotony of life, the formula for happiness, resilience and bravery.
This conversation is the perfect way to start the new year - with a renewed love for that monotony of life and getting to a place where we are really living for the moment.

"When I thought I was going to die I didn’t think about money, I didn’t think about these companies. I literally just thought about happiness." - Burke Laidler
Burke Laidler is a musician and the vocalist for his band 'Ofi.' This year, lost in the middle of nowhere he made some big decisions - including to live a more authentic life by pursuing music and divorcing his wife.
We talk about both of those things, the fear that comes with walking away from a life of comfort that’s not necessarily happy.
We also chat about making the life you want out of a rough childhood and his powerful, meaningful music.
One of the reasons I wanted to share this episode now - is because the holidays can be tough. It’s really easy to question your worth and life on this earth around this time of year.
Many years ago, Burke wanted to take his own life. You’ll hear what he did and how grateful he is to have gotten a second chance.

Have you ever noticed negativity breeds negativity?
As I scroll through my Facebook feed, I’ve started to think maybe we actually LIKE feeling this way. Maybe we like the negativity, the anger, the fighting and everything that comes with it.
It’s more than just bad news that’s shared. It’s negative opinions, it’s anger, it’s complaints - there is so much NEGATIVITY on our social media feeds.
Some experts say negativity is an addiction - even comparing it to addictions to drugs and alcohol.
In this episode, Danielle talks about research looking at how negativity impacts the brain and the so-called negativity bias.
Plus, get ideas on how to fight the negativity bias (the thing in your brain that makes negative stuff impact you more than positive stuff) and live a happier life day to day.

Today I’m talking to Dr. Tali Lando in a very candid conversation about breast cancer.
Dr. Lando is a full-time pediatric ENT surgeon. She is also a breast cancer survivor. But the year she was diagnosed with cancer was anything but easy. Months before, she delivered her third daughter, a little preemie. Then her dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. And finally her own advanced breast cancer diagnosis.
She recently published a book about her experience called “Hell and Back: Wife and Mother, Doctor and Patient, Dragon Slayer.”
We talk about what it was like being a doctor who was suddenly a vulnerable patient. In this honest conversation she talks about her relationship with her body, living in the moment and what she learned from her experience.

"It made me feel worthy. It made me feel strong. It made me feel like I am supposed to be here and I can help other people."
You may recognize Hayden Ryals from a viral story over the summer. She is the woman who first donated her bone marrow to save a 1-year-old with leukemia - and then, years later, invited her to be the flower girl at her wedding.
You likely saw Hayden and little Skye’s story online - or on Good Morning America, People Magazine, CNN or one of the many other news organizations.
In part one of this episode series - you heard from Skye Savren-McCormick’s parents about fighting cancer and how Hayden literally saved Skye’s life.
Now you’ll hear from Hayden who says Skye saved her life. We talk about how her bone marrow donation led her to find clarity, eased her anxiety and depression and gave her a new world view.
Of course, we also talk about giving bone marrow.
AND as we kick of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, 18-44 year olds can also get in the bone marrow registry.

Skye played a big role in a wedding as the flower girl, but only after the bride saved Skye’s life with a bone marrow transplant.
Skye has spent the majority of her young life fighting cancer. She has had three bone marrow transplants - two of which came from Hayden Ryals.
Hayden asked Skye to be in her wedding as the flower girl.
Hayden was very literally Skye's hero, but Hayden says the same about Skye.
In this episode you'll hear from Skye's parents. Next week you'll hear from Hayden.
In this episode we talk about living in a tiny hospital room, the importance of taking even just five minutes for self care, following mom gut - even when that means you’re standing up to medical experts — and the worst day of their lives - hearing their daughter only had 10% chance of survival.
As we kick of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, 18-44 year olds can also get in the bone marrow registry. It is just a cotton swab to the inner cheek.

Have you heard of impermanence? It’s a big centerpiece of Buddhist teachings - nothing is permanent.
The idea is once you understand impermanence, you can decrease suffering.
There are two things we can do once we can really internalize and accept that nothing is permanent.
1 - When things are good, you can embrace them, love them and enjoy this part of your life.
2 - When things are NOT going as planned, when life is not good - you can understand, this will pass.

Through the organization she sends out care packages to women suffering pregnancy loss. These packages have gone all over the world.. as far as South Africa and New Zealand. She’s also been on “The Real” to talk about her non-profit.
In this episode, Artesha talks about what it was like to lose a child, finding purpose in his life and founding Peyton’s Purpose. Plus, there is a beautiful rainbow at this point in her story, the adoption of her second son, Mason.

Today's guest is Matt Kozar. Matt is a former journalist and Emmy-award winner who worked all across the country, including New York City.
In 2010, Matt’s brother was killed in a drunk driving crash when a man with a blood alcohol level far exceeding the legal limit… ran into him and a friend.
Matt has released his debut novel, "Angels on the Bridge." It's a fictional book, inspired by his brother's story. In it, he tells the story of a fictional character killed in a drunk driving crash. In this story, the main character is then asked to be a guardian angel or spirit guide for the man who killed him. This story is one of forgiveness, inspiration and the soul’s journey.
I talked to Matt about his brother’s death, “Angels on the Bridge," and the parallels between the two.

When you're stuck in the merry-go-round of life it is really easy to focus on the daily grind and not get a chance to breathe. Insert the overwhelm and burnout.
I used to be a live-for-Friday kind of person. On the newscasts I anchored I would say “Good morning - its Wednesday, halfway to Friday. It’s Thursday - you know, Friday-eve.”
But then when I got to Friday and the weekend - I would catch up on all the things I had been putting off during the insane previous five days.
Danielle talks about five ways to break the cycle of overwhelm and to add more joy into your everyday life.

There is so much irony in 21st century with connection and communication. We are connected to more people than ever, yet our connections are not real and intentional. We are not connecting how we used to - in a meaningful way.
In this episode, Danielle talks about the importance of connecting and how to connect.
On Facebook, many people said a fear of judgement keeps them from connecting with others. Danielle explains how she got over her own fear (yes! She used to be afraid of talking to other people before becoming a news anchor/reporter).

In this episode, Danielle Craig talks about what intention is and why we are not acting with intention in this 21st century world. That includes the ways social media and being busy is making it harder to live with intention.

For years, Danielle has been living in a state of chaos - just one more to-do from sinking as she was treading water.
For many years, she has juggled being a working mom with a schedule that keeps her awake from 2 a.m. - 9 p.m. Throughout the day she hasn't had a time to stop and breathe.
She race to work where she would face deadline after deadline. Then she'd head home to face a never-ending list of responsibilities.
It felt chaotic - until Danielle discovered meditation. Danielle believes mediation is for ANYONE. You don't need to prescribe to a specific religion, be spiritual or any other thing you think it requires. You just need to be a human being in need of mental break.

Perspective is SUCH a powerful thing. When we can understand we are not the sun and the world is not revolving around us - it allows us to look outside of ourselves and our story. When we understand our scenario is not the worst, we are given strength to overcome.
Perspective can empower you with gratitude.
Danielle Craig will tell you about some incredible people who have inspired her to keep perspective in mind.

In this episode, Danielle Craig talks about the idea that joy or happiness isn’t an end state. She compares it to the marathon she just completed. In life, there isn't a finish line of happiness. There isn't a time where you finish a line and yelp "I'm done! I'm happy now."
Joy is something we strive for each day.
The trick is to find joy in the good, the bad, the ugly and even the heartbreaking.

Maybe your plan includes a marriage… but it falls apart.
