Chuck ends our time by leading us through a practice together.
Chuck DeGroat is a professor of pastoral care and Christian spirituality at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he also serves as the founding executive director of the clinical mental health counseling program. He is a licensed therapist, spiritual director, author, retreat leader speaker, and faculty member with the Soul Care Institute. As a therapist, he specializes in navigating issues of abuse and trauma, pastoral (and leadership) health, and doubt and dark nights on the faith journey. He trains clergy in handling issues of abuse and trauma, conducts pastor and planter assessments, and facilitates church consultations and investigations of abuse. Before transitioning to training and forming pastors, Chuck served as a pastor in Orlando and San Francisco. He and his wife, Sara, have been married for 30 years and have two adult daughters.

Mariko Clark and Rachel Eleanor are the creators of the new Children's Bible, The Book of Belonging. It's a book of Bible stories for kind and contemplative kids, where they create space for wonder, contemplation, and identity, recognizing that everyone belongs. They share it's origin story (beginning with Mariko's daughter asking if God loves boys more than girls because of the representation she was experiencing in her own Children's Bible), how the process of creating it has affected each of them, why they chose to have created some visual depictions of God, and the thoughtful reasons they chose to utilize people's Hebrew names rather than their anglicized names in their stories.
I couldn't be more excited for this to be out in the world when it releases on September 24.

We’re getting close to the end of our time in the Divine Conspiracy and joining us today in one of the final chapters is Justin Morgan. Justin is the pastor of Church on Morgan (which is not named after him…which we talk about in the episode). One of the reasons we wanted to have Justin on for this specific chapter is because Willard lays out some of the vision that Justin grabbed ahold of when he first started Church on Morgan, but that he would eventually find not fully adequate for the work that they were doing. He thoughtfully engages with both an appreciation for Willard and The Divine Conspiracy, but also offers critique based on what he experienced in his church. This conversation was a gift.

Scot McKnight is the Julius R. Mantey Chair of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He's the author of numerous books including Jesus Creed, Blue Parakeet, King Jesus Gospel and A Church Called Tov, which he co-authored with his daughter Laura Barringer.

We're doing something a bit different on the space for faith podcast today and broadcasting a sermon Mike recently preached at South Bend City Church. We walk through the double healing of the blind man in Mark 8, recognizing that sometimes in our faith journey we need to see, but not clearly before our eyes can be opened to see clearly and in focus. Like the blind man who experiences a two part healing in Mark 8, our faith often progresses through stages that grow and expand. And the places where we have grown from were often necessary pieces to help bring us to where we are today.

This is a gathering of pastors, artists, and other church leaders in the post-evangelical space in order to connect, share resources, learn from one another, and know that you’re not alone as you seek to lead the church into new spaces.
These are pastors, artists, and other leaders who find the boundaries of evangelicalism too narrow for our experience of God and its politics corrupted by an un-Christlike vision. Who seek a more just and inclusive expression of faith, but also reject the temptation to trade one exclusionary stance for another in the effort to address the need for justice and inclusion. Who believe in the importance of deconstruction, but also believe in rebuilding faith as followers of Jesus. Who see the Spirit moving through new ideas and theological visions, but who also embrace the depth and breadth of historical faith.
This will be an opportunity to build relationships, learn from one another, and see the larger movement that the Spirit is stirring beyond our local context.
We wanted to continue to make this gathering as accessible as possible while also working to make it sustainable for the long term. As a result, there are several different registration options, including a group discount, buy-one-gift-one for those who are able, and a pay-what-you-can option.
Today’s space for faith episode has a little bit of everything with Sean Palmer. It starts early with Sean comparing Taylor Swift with Shakespeare and quickly moves to talking about the Enneagram, cancel culture, Power over persuasion as the normal experience culturally and in the church, the church recapturing the ability to have difficult conversations together, the pragmatics of communicating to multiple enneagram numbers, and preaching and leading in post-evangelical spaces.

Sarah is a Co-Pastor and founder of Cascade PDX. Brian Zahnd is the Lead Pastor of Word of Life Church in St Joseph, Missouri. He's a prolific author, with his most recent book When Everything's on Fire now available. For many of us, particularly pastors, who were looking for other pastors who were wrestling deeply with what he calls a theological remodeling, Brian has been someone that many of us have looked to and learned from.
Towards the end of the episode, he talks about the prayer school that he leads before leading us through a prayer. I'd highly recommend that Prayer School...especially if you are someone who is going through a remodeling of your theological house. Winn Collier was the founding pastor of All Souls Charlottesville in Virginia. He now directs the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination at Western Theological Seminary in Michigan. Winn’s newest book, a biography on Eugene Peterson, called “A Burning in My Bones” comes out on March 23.
Winn and I talk about how Eugene moved from being a competitive pastor to a contemplative one, how theology can’t be separated from geography, creating space to not have the clarity that we often want, and recapturing imagination.
One of the people I regret I never got to spend time with before they passed was Eugene Peterson. His wisdom, the way he lived his life, the way he pastored have all significantly affected me, especially in the past decade.
