Instead of going the professor route, Chris took a role as a marketing consultant. This was at the time when something new was just beginning – a little thing called the Internet.
He was a natural as a consultant. Within no time he became a partner. He meets his wife at the firm. He has it all…or at least pretty close to it. And just then, while on top, Chris and his wife quit the firm.

So he took all his knowledge and years of experience and launched Sequence Consulting.
Now, twenty-plus years later Sequence Consulting has become the premier firm in the U.S. helping nonprofit associations achieve their goals.

George Webb Restaurants have been a part of Wisconsin forever. Well, okay. Just since 1948, but you have to admit that’s a pretty good record. At Over a Pint, we say it’s a mandatory tip of the cap to any brand that’s been around for 75 years as that’s one hell of a run!
On this episode, Kurt and Pat sit down with Ryan Stamm, Vice President of George Webb Corporation, to get the score on what it takes to survive (and thrive) in the restaurant biz.
We find out it’s not easy for a local favorite to keep pace with the chain eatery giants who seem to have endless dollars to spend. Ryan talks about what makes George Webb such a unique brand round these parts, the challenge to market with limited dollars, and all of the other hurdles thrown at local businesses these days like soaring prices, supply chain issues and continued competition.
But here’s the deal, George Webb Restaurants are more than just another place to put your fanny down and order up some bacon and eggs (oh but they are so good as is their chili).
George Webb is an iconic brand … in fact, George Webb Restaurants and Wisconsin naturally go together, like bacon and eggs or burgers and fries. Maybe it’s thanks to the fresh, local products that you’ll find on their menu. Or, maybe it’s the outrageous baseball predictions (go Crew!) Or, it could be the friendly vibe at the front counter where everyone’s a neighbor (except when the Packers lose, and everyone is grumbling. But at least we’re all grumbling together).
You probably have your own reasons (and memories) for thinking of Webb’s as a Wisconsin tradition. Whatever your reason, check out this episode as it’s so Milwaukee delicious.
Happy 75th anniversary George Webb!

Sometimes marketing is meant for the greater good.
On this episode of OAP, Kurt and Pat sit down with Julie Kraft and Erika Edmiston. Two dedicated women working hard to Keep Wyoming Wild & Beautiful!
Trying to keep invasive species at bay is not an easy task. And why exactly is that important to all of us? Simply put, invasive species harm the environment and wildlife by taking over habitats and resources from native species. This can result in changes to food chains and ecosystems, making it harder for native plants and animals to survive.
We find out how Erika, Julie, and the entire WWPC team go about their jobs – whether it’s actually in the weeds out in the field battling invasive head-on, through education, and even marketing their message to audiences (oh yeah, we cover marketing and brand on this one as well). While our guests may live, work and play in the Cowboy State, this episode is relevant to wherever you call home.
Come and have a listen … who knows, this episode just might encourage you to learn more about invasive species and how you can help in your own backyard.

Henry’s story blew us away. He talks to us about how he started backpacking across the world while still a kid. And how this experience helped to make him a better marketer.
He shares his story about designing and selling skateboards on the playground. And then how he went on to buy a skateboarding shop at age 16!!
He talks about the idea for MobCraft and his time on Shark Tank. Yeah, Mark Cuban actually spit out some of his beer onto the floor of the stage! Classic Cuban.
The stories are great, his business insights are awesome and as far as the brews MobCraft is brewing up these days … they are out-of-this-world delicious!

That episode looked at the higher ed landscape from a 3,000 ft level. What’s working. What’s not. And the changes institutions need to make to survive.
This episode is a bit different. It’s a case study on how Doug and the team at Loyola have used the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament to drive awareness and enrollment for the university.
The story and insights alone make for a great pod. But it gets even better!
Right before the tournament started, an independent film crew launched The Loyola Project. A documentary film focusing on the 1963 Loyola Ramblers and their quest for the championship.
This story is UNBELIEVABLE and it works on so many levels. It’s a great basketball story. A great come-from-behind underdog story. The profile of the players is awesome. And it’s a sad story of race and the way players were treated.
Marketing during March Madness is exciting enough. But to have a movie that deals with your university at the same time – well, that’s bananas!!
From a marketer’s standpoint – this is literally lightning in a bottle. And in this pod, Doug shares how they pulled things together to make the most of this amazing opportunity.
Here at OAP we kind of nerd out on the higher ed space. If you’re one of us…settle in for this one. It won’t disappoint.

Yeah, the brother is an absolute content juggernaut out there. And it’s not just the quantity that’s impressive. It’s the quality of the content he is producing that will blow you away!!
Tim has a fascinating background that starts in old-school journalism and quickly evolves into heading up all social marketing for Marquette University. This is at a time when people were still asking themselves, “Is this a thing”?
Tim explains the early days and how he leaned into the channel and blew it wide open. Then after 13-years he said adios to higher education and went to work as Director of Communications at Sprecher brewing.
Side note here: We had the CEO of Sprecher on the pod not too long ago, Sharad Chadha. Take a listen to that bad boy! It’s awesome.
Listening to Tim talk about his experience at Sprecher is a mini-MBA course. It’s a living breathing case study of how a 30-year-old brewing company is readjusting to an all-new competitive environment. And how marketing and communications fit into the organization. It’s a ride!!
We think you’ll really like Tim’s thoughts on moving from a marketing organization that has been living in the day-to-day world. To an organization that is more strategic and planful.

Fast forward a few years and now Dawn is heading up marketing at the start-up, Raek (pronounced rake).
With most of our episodes, we have been focusing on talking to marketers at established brands and the steps they are taking to remain relevant with their customer base. But marketing for a start-up is a different story.
Dawn breaks it down for us and shares:
✅ How to market with a small team and a smaller budget.
✅ The importance of content and what’s the right content to focus on.
✅ How to use other people’s content to help promote your business.
✅ How to build community and why it’s so important in business.

Think about it all the different touchpoints a customer can have with a brand. There’s the website. The call center. The catalog. The bill. The store. Customer service. The list goes on.
Screw up in just one of those areas…the likelihood that your customer will
leave and move on to your competition goes up…dramatically.
Ok, but the customer experience is just one part of the story. To develop a strong
customer experience…brands need to consider the employee experience! Are you
starting to get a headache yet?
Like we said, it’s complicated…but it’s not going away. So, what can marketers do? What action
steps can be taken? Well…listen to this episode and get the scoop.

In this episode, we have a sit down with Ted Balistreri. Ted is the co-owner of Sendik’s and has played a huge role in the growth of the business over the past 20+ years.
This is a great pod on a number of levels. The first is just the history of the company. It’s a great story of immigrants coming to America and succeeding. The second – is the insights from Ted on how he and his team have been able to grow the business even in the time of COVID. And finally, it was awesome getting his take on what’s ahead for this vertical.
Ted killed it! Funny. Warm. Insightful. Especially in talking about how the Sendiks brand has been able to go up against some of the biggest players in the space and win.

John Ricks is the Executive Director for the State of Nebraska Tourism Commission.
Kirk Ruhnke is a freelance Creative Director and Copywriter.
These two were part of the team that came up with the breakthrough campaign: Nebraska, Honestly It’s Not For Everyone.
And In this episode, they share the story of one of the best turn-around stories ever. Seriously, this is the kind of case study that you read about in business school.
Here's the background.
In 2017 when John and Kirk started working on the brand, Nebraska was ranked -- check this -- as the state least likely for people to visit.
It was so bad...Nebraska wasn’t even considered a part of the travel category. Let that sink in for a minute.
The state was in the worst place possible. They were suffering from brand apathy. People just didn’t care about the state AT ALL.
That was the scene when John and Kirk started their work. And in a short period of time, they put together an amazing campaign that won every travel advertising award, and delivered an incredible ROI!
John and Kirk provide:
✅ A behind-the-scenes look at how they did it.
✅ The steps they took to go to change the people’s perception of the state.
✅ The obstacles they had to overcome.
✅ The results they achieved. Spoiler alert: they’re AMAZING!
