Having a position of authority does not guarantee loyalty, respect, and discretionary effort from team members. Instead of relying heavily on their authority, leaders should focus on developing their leadership skills through personality or referent power and values influence. Personality power is about connecting with people through charisma and interpersonal skills, while values influence is about demonstrating consistent values and integrity. By doing so, leaders can establish trust and influence that transcends their position, creating a positive work environment and motivating team members to perform their best.

What contributes to a long and quality life?  The Harvard University study on adult development that has been conducted for 85 years has found that personal relationships are the most important factor in long term health and happiness. This conclusion was drawn from tracking the lives of an original group of 724 people and more than 1300 of their descendants over three generations. The study found that the people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest both mentally and physically at age 80. Spending time with others was linked to happiness, and having a satisfying relationship had a protective effect against the ups and downs of moods, including physical pain and health challenges. The study highlights the importance of being intentional about relationships, as we are social beings and need community to thrive. Investing time and energy in relationships today is a vital investment for the future.

Creating goals or having a vision based on what you desire will create energy that would not otherwise be there if you fail to do so.  Once you create a "place to go" you are more prone to discover things, meet people, and acquire resources that will help you reach the goal.  However, it is important that we embrace the currently reality of where we are so that  we can create an effective plan to create the future we want.  I provide you with some key questions you can ask yourself to clarify your vision and assess your current reality.

Affective forecasting refers to the prediction of one's future emotions.  It may surprise you that we are terrible at this.  As a result, we tend to make poor decisions based on this faulty thinking.  The Nobel Prize winner Dr. Daniel Kahneman delves into this phenomenon and what is referred to as the focusing illusion in his classic book "Thinking Fast and Slow".  In this episode I provide some details around this principle that will be extremely helpful in the way you think about various goals, achievements, and experiences in your life.

We are highly influenced by bias.  The way someone looks, how they dress, or what car they drive can impact the type of interactions they have with others.  In this week's episode I look at this dynamic particularly in the context of business.  I approach it from two different perspectives.  I sample David Shands, host of the popular Social Proof podcast, who supports the idea of looking the part.  And then we hear from Alex Hormozi, founder of acquisition.com, who shares that looks have nothing to do with the way he shows up in business situations.

The way we talk to ourselves has tremendous power in the way that we see the world and engage with it.   An ancient proverb states that "Death and life is in the power of the tongue".  We would do well to understand this concept a lot deeper in order to harness the creative power that it can have in our lives.  I referenced some content from The Business of Story Podcast with Park Howell and his guest Jocelyn Brady.

This show is an endorsement for the movie "King Richard".  I really enjoyed it and wanted to share something I learned from it.  So in this episode I share the importance of establishing moral character strengths in your life.  Our society tends to reward performance character strengths because they are certainly more visible and at times it takes less time to see the results that come from it.  However, moral character strengths require more time and introspection and to be truly successful as a human being this is mandatory.

Perfectionism is not very logical, but boy do we fall for it.  In this episode the focus is on delegating.  To become successful in many areas of life, you must learn to delegate.  This means that we have to relinquish control and to allow others the opportunity to develop or to provide a service so that your time, which is one of our most valuable assets, can be better leveraged.  The content was derived from Rory Vaden's book "Procrastinate on Purpose"

Deferred maintenance refers to necessary maintenance, repairs and upgrades or replacements that are put on hold until some time in the future.  If you fail to make these investments on a property, like your home or another investment property, you not only risk the value of the asset decreasing but also paying more for the damage that is caused by the negligence.   The same is true in our lives.  It is expedient that we invest in the various "rooms" of our lives on a regular basis so that we don't end up with heavy losses and inadequate living conditions.

Most of the time, if you want to change something to make it better, your two main options are to add new components or to take away components that are already there.  When you describe both options like this, it’s obvious that subtraction is an option, and might sometimes be a better option. But when you’re going through everyday life, you have to generate all the options on your own.  However,  we have a tendency to think that the way to make things better is to do more.  Often we overlook the value of removing something to increase the appreciation of the rest.

This week we continue our conversation with Craig Wasserman, an accomplished management consultant, lecturer, and author. He shares his insights on how intentionality is key in successfully managing employees. He suggests that as a manager, you are the architect and therefore responsible for creating conditions that promote your employees best work.

In his book "The Invisible Spotlight", Craig writes:

"If the foundation of the management relationship is solid, it's because you're doing something right. If the foundation falters or fails, it's because you're doing something wrong. It's that simple and that difficult"

In this episode we continue our exploration with the topic of dialogue.  In order to be successful in dialogue we need to employ certain strategies but most importantly, we need to make a conscious choice to do so.  It's as much a skill as it is an act of the will.  By embracing this mindset, we can ask ourselves one of the most powerful questions that create or promote healthy dialogue.  The question is, "what do I want?"

This simple but yet powerful question allows our brain to engage and to manage emotions so that we can create the atmosphere for understanding to take place.  What do you want for yourself, the relationship, the team, organization, etc.  Think about that the next time you find yourself driven by an unproductive motive in a conversation or interaction.

One of the critical skills in personal growth and development is the ability to create dialogue in communication.  Our current cancel culture is a great example of our failure as a society to maintain civility and respect for one another.  The purpose of dialogue as defined by Webster's is "seeking mutual understanding".   Dialogue doesn't just happen, we have to be intentional about it.  At the root of dialogue is the ability to to suspend judgment and refrain from the eagerness to fight for our own convictions and instead seek to understand the viewpoint of others.  Empathy, the ability to think someone else's thoughts and feel someone else's feelings, is indispensable to dialogue.  To do this we must develop certain skills but also it is an act of the will.

Episode 2 – Leveraging a support community to build efficacy and confidence in your career

Never take anything personal! As a highly successful woman in the STEM field, Ladan shares that being resilient and identifying her own personal values has been a key factor in accomplishing her goals. By owning and acknowledging our choices in both career and family we can create less stress for ourselves by maintaining boundaries around those commitments. We can also leverage a support community to help us grow and step out of our comfort zones. Being the Founder of the St. Louis Women in Tech Exchange, Ladan has created a forum for women to engage, learn, and grow and further develop themselves. Finally, we must learn to understand the difference between being and doing. It’s tempting to be busy constantly doing something or going somewhere in our careers, life, school, etc. We must recognize the power of now and enjoy what the present moment can give us.
