As a Culture and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) practitioner, Kim Flanery-Rye shared her insights on creating a positive culture in organizations during the podcast. She emphasized that leaders should prioritize culture from the beginning, rather than considering it as an afterthought. Kim pointed out that while culture may vary between organizations, it plays a significant role in their success. In smaller organizations, C-level executives have a more direct influence on culture, making it easier to observe and manage. Meanwhile, in larger organizations, creating and maintaining a positive culture may be more challenging due to their size and structure. Nevertheless, Kim highlighted the importance of all organizations being intentional about creating a diverse and inclusive culture.

The podcast's discussion primarily revolved around gender parity in the workplace and how to audit and address systemic issues that prevent women from succeeding in their careers. We discussed the "leaky pipeline" or "leaky faucet" phenomenon, where women's representation decreases as we move up the leadership positions. We also talked about various factors that may contribute to women leaving their careers, such as the pay gap, lack of parental leave support, and other systemic issues that make it difficult for women to succeed. To address these issues, organizations can audit their hiring practices and identify choke points where biases may come into play, such as in the selection process for new hires and promotions. They can also conduct employee life cycle reporting to identify deltas in the promotion and salary increase of male and female employees.

We also discussed how women tend to do more event organizing, diversity and inclusion work, and join more ERG groups than men. However, these efforts are often undervalued and not compensated during annual reviews or promotion time, leading to the "leaky pipeline" phenomenon. As a result, mid-level women tend to leave the workforce to start their own businesses due to the difficulty of breaking through the glass ceiling, caregiving responsibilities that still tend to fall on women, and burnout. Finally, we discussed how the World Economic Forum is a platform where discussions about gender equity, climate change, poverty, and justice are happening, and there is a lot of action being taken to address these issues. While there is a juxtaposition between the wealth and high-end fashion at the Forum and the ideas for change being discussed, the Congress makes the big world decisions, while thousands of people outside the Congress are trying to make changes happen in real-time.

When MyKimisms Founder, Kim “Kimfer” wasn’t offered a chair on the board, she created one. Kim is the first-ever elected VP of DEI to the Board of Directors in over 70 chapters across the nation for the

Would you like to pinpoint the habits holding you back from progressing in your career? Extensive research by Sally Helgesen and her collaborator Marshall Goldsmith gives us clear traits we can overcome to be intentional in driving our career. It is never about us lacking the skill, the knowledge or expertise, it's about bringing forth our confidence and owning not just our space or voice but leveraging our voice and network without shyness, shame or hesitancy.

In this interview, Sally discusses 3 of the 12 factors manifested by a large percentage of women inhibiting their career progression. We discuss how we can acknowledge and speak to our career success and impact. We also dive into how to leverage our networks and work on our careers and not just our jobs. We are sometimes unsure about how we can have career conversations and decide and define where we want it to go. There are many aspects we can find hard to articulate and this conversation gives you a starting point and walks you along on the journey.

To really get a more comprehensive idea of what other aspects you can pull together to propel yourself forward, please pick up Sally's book "How Women Rise- 12 habits holding women back". Research and reality intersect as Prof. David Smith discusses the importance of Men as allies and mentors to drive gender equity. He walks through the.3 steps of allyship and reminds us that the first forays into allyship don't have to be perfect, it's ok to make mistakes. His books Athena Rising and Good Guys are written to and for Men. As I listened to them it gave me a unique insight, into the challenges and thoughts men grapple with including how to be allies and how to use their social capital to drive change. We also delve into the challenge women face in attaining and being perceived as effective leaders. and briefly touch on how caregiving is a leadership issue and not just a women's issue. The work on allyship does not stop at work, these behaviours and attitudes need to be taken into our homes and communities for us to see true change especially from the ground up. Let us not forget that we need a safe space to explore, understand and to then advocate on these issues.. Listen in to this full conversation and see what you can do, what impact you can have and also what you can take home to impact your family, your community and the circle of life we live in.

David Smith, PhD, is co-author of the book, Good Guys: How Men Can Be Better Allies for Women in the Workplace and an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. As a sociologist trained in military sociology and social psychology, he focuses his research in gender, work, and family issues including allyship, inclusive mentorship and sponsorship, gender bias in performance evaluations, and dual career families. He is the co-author of Athena Rising: How and Why Men Should Mentor Women and numerous journal articles and book chapters that focus on gender and the workplace.
