Spire Conference - Preconference - Weedership - Levi Lusko, speaker

Proverbs 24:30–34 (ESV):

30 I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, 31 and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. 32 Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Leading is weeding. That’s the major thought Levi Lusko expressed in his talk. Once I got passed his painted on skinny jeans and the fact that he almost used the word of curse made popular by South Park I was able to take a few notes. The following thoughts are based on those.

Weeds are easy but wheat is hard. It is a simple thing to let problems fester. The problems in your ministry are weeds. They grow fast, multiply, wreak havoc on your intended crop, are an inevitable byproduct of ministry work, and are always ready to make a comeback. All these points I have witnessed in my few years preaching. I wonder if I am sufficiently aggressive in addressing problems as they arise. I’m probably not. The severity of the issue ought to dictate the level of aggressiveness in addressing issues, right? That’s the way I’m currently playing it.

We don’t weed because it’s hard, we already did it once, someone else should take care of it, we just don’t have the time, we don’t want to get on our knees. There are always excuses not to do the thing that is necessary but uncomfortable in ministry. My experience in Clinical Pastoral Education taught me that the thing that seems the hardest is probably the think you need to do most, so that might be the best indicator of which task to take on first.

When others attempt to pull weeds from your life do they get poked? It really depends on who is doing the pulling. This is where the speaker got a little personal and tried to get us to apply the message to ourselves. Honestly, I have a few people I trust and will listen to carefully while others I may dismiss in whole or in part. It’s very situationally driven for me.

A few other thoughts I found interesting were recognizing the times when you need to imitate and the times you need to innovate, paying attention to and avoiding a cruise control mentality, and asking what areas of my leadership I am not paying attention to. In answer to the last question I am probably not being sufficiently intentional in developing the other leaders that currently work with me in the church.

It seemed like Levi had just been flown in so I want to give him as much slack as possible especially since he didn’t have any at all in his pants.

Spire Conference - Pre Conference - RePOSITION - David Vaughn, speaker

The first note I have written is “What is this guy selling?”

Probably not the best way to start the show. I had the feeling I was being sold something from the very beginning. This feeling continued throughout the convention and I get it. The stuff they are promoting are helpful tools that have been successfully used in a variety of ministries but that isn’t the reason I left my family for a week, placed strain on my wife, and got behind in my regular weekly duties. I came to the Spire Conference to answer one simple question, “Should I continue to think of myself as a part of the Stone Campbell Movement?”

It’s the wrong question for Spire. In fact they didn’t seem to care about that at all.

What they did care about was church leadership. The following is based on my notes.

Leadership in the church can be fun. It can be work. It can be war. David Vaughn, the first speaker pointed this out. Justin, my best friend, said he came off as a jerk. I didn’t pick up on that. I thought he was using dry humor to emphasize some of the mistakes he made in leadership. Those words though... fun, work, war... they all resonated with me. I’ve had all three.

Vaughn suggested that church leadership today is about helping people change their attitudes in and around church.

Consumerism should be replaced with commitment. The church ought not be a place where we go to receive spiritual goods and services. Instead it is a community of people and ideas to which individuals commit themselves. When I was in seminary they were using the buzz word “relational”. The concept is sound but I still hate the word.

Religion should be replaced with relationship in transformational community. I hear this a lot. It’s a buzz phrase and should be dispensed with just as we have done with relational. (While we’re at it please stop saying “doing life”. We have a word for that - living.) I think we should be slow to abandon religion. By religion, I mean the cultic or ritualistic practiced associated with the faith. The rhythms of the liturgy are significant. They help to ground the ethereal elements of Christianity into the physical world and that is important. Simply look to the incarnation for proof.

Pragmatic leadership should be replaced with pastoral leadership. This seems to be a given since leadership in the church ought to always be pastoral first and then pragmatic. Applying this consistently is one of the greatest challenges I have had as a pastor. I think the secret is remaining focused on the long game rather than short gains.

“Come and see” should be replaced with “go and share”. Another given. Again one that is easier said. It’s much easier to shout “Look at what I can do!” Faithfully sharing the gospel to people who repeatedly reject it requires discipline most of us lack. Going and sharing has far greater biblical support than creating a spectacle. We ought not be clowns. The gospel is serious. Act like it.

Attending the church should be replaced with being the church. This is true but needs some explanation. The corporate gathering of believers is a critical part of the Christian life. There’s no getting around this. Go to church. At the same time, the life of believers is not only lived out in the worship service. It is lived daily in each and ever circumstance. This is being the church the other six days. Consistent application of good ecclesiology must be taught, encouraged, and demanded among congregations.

Identify mission critical pathways for your congregation. Healthy congregations understand their priorities. Knowing what is important forms decision making so that non essential preferred activities can be minimized in favor of that which is more impactful.

David Vaughn said, “It is easier to disciple lost people than to energize Christians.” That’s a rough quote. Neither of those things are easy or happen quickly. Just a fun little reality check.

Justin, my best friend who attended the conference with me said, “Get your old people to be nice, or at least not a—holes.” I think this can be extended to everyone in the church, especially personally. I’m trying.

Overall I thought the first lecture was decent. Repositioning a congregation for more effective ministry is a continuous activity that extends beyond practicality into the theological, social, and emotional development of both the congregation and the individual. I’m pretty sure we all knew that but a reminder doesn’t hurt.

Martin W. Bender A friend of mine asked me to read Powerful and Free: Confronting the Glass Ceiling for Women in the Church by Danny Silk. He was excited about the book, saying it would be impactful for me. I borrowed it and read it, mostly because I will likely want to place a book in his hand someday, but also because I’ve not read much on gender roles in the church written from the egalitarian position. I should have read another book. I should warn everyone that I’m a complementarian when it comes to gender roles. I hold this position both within the church and the family, and to a lesser extent, society at large. My wife jokes that I’m a He-man Woman Hater like Spanky, Alfalfa, and Buckwheat. I don’t think that’s true but I’m sure some will label me seriously as such because I hold to a traditional view of gender differences. Silk’s book hasn’t changed my mind. In fact, it has solidified me more in the complementarian perspective. Powerful and Free is by no means a scholarly treatment of the subject. It is an emotional appeal based on the experiences and opinions of the author. There is one chapter dealing with Paul’s writing about the role of women in the church and in the family. The author demonstrates a lack of consistency how he handles the English text as well as a laughable interaction with the original Greek. His argument is that because Paul says there is neither “male nor female” that all gender roles, even those he writes about, are null. Silk fails to interact with his primary text within its context and to tie it in with his other arguments. He handles Paul’s words with care like that of a chimpanzee driving a semi-truck. I recognized when I started the book that the author was a Bethel devotee. I was not surprised that much of the work spoke of anointing and power and other such language rooted in that movement. It did surprise me that such high regard was given to a “word” received while the biblical text was treated in so shallow a fashion. Here is where I find my greatest difference with the author. When someone claims to have received divine revelation outside of the Scriptures, and in this case counter to it, I will err on the side of the text rather than some feller’s inwardly received word. Silk seems to go the other way. Another issue I have with the book is its description of power. Power is always described in terms of authority and influence - usually in an institutional setting. This seems to be a rather masculine understanding. While the author does make clear the distinction between masculinity and femininity he fails to describe feminine power. In fairness, he comes close in chapter 7 while talking about Proverbs 31 but misses the opportunity and instead provides testimonials about women being empowered by their husbands to take leadership roles in business and the church. A biblical description of feminine power would be more helpful than examples of women in ministry positions. At several points in the book, Silk comes close to espousing a complementarian position. This is because he recognizes the clear distinction between male in female both in the text as well as in his own experience. Despite this, he fails to see that an equal standing before God in Christ with regard to judgment is not the same thing as an equal standing in positions of authority in the church or family. He lacks a biblical anthropology and ecclesiology. As a result, seems to be influenced by secular, feminist views. Never in Powerful and Free is there a reasonable description of those holding the complementarian view. He fails to interact with anyone holding the opposing position. I realize that a popular level book is not expected to deal extensively with the alternative view but gross mischaracterization, a charitable description of the author’s tone, is inappropriate. Silk should read Piper and Grudem’s Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood to better understand the position he opposes. I would also like to point out that making a comparison between the way biblical gender roles have been abused to the institution of slavery is dishonest. It is disrespectful to those harmed by slavery and misogyny. Powerful but Free misses the mark in furthering the discussion in the complementarian/egalitarian debate in any meaningful way. It may serve as a starting point for those interested in the subject, but it fails to support the author’s position or level serious criticism to his opposition. I'd skip it.

What you are about to hear is the podcast equivalent of taking all your leftovers and putting them in a casserole. Sometimes it makes the most delicious meal. Sometimes it is an absolute train wreck. In this episode, Martin took a bunch of clips he saved from previous conversations and slammed them together into an episode that isn't too far from the standard and is definitely worthy of the "podcastgold" hashtag. Justin finds comradery among the dads at the water park, Martin talks about one of the greatest classroom games from his high school days, and both just yammer on and on about nothing in particular making you wonder why you listen to this nonsense in the first place. They both also think it is important to beat your kids at video games and Pokemon. Enjoy the show!

Fusion is an explanation of the assimilation program Nelson Searcy utilizes in his local church. It has many practical suggestions on how a congregation can be more effective at interacting with guests and engaging them outside the walls of the church facility. The book is all about function and encouraging the reader to be intentional about moving the first-time guest into fully engaged member of the church.

Fusion is not a book on ecclesiology. In fact, the greatest frustration I had with the book was the lack of clarity concerning what the responsibilities and privileges of church membership are for the individual. He does make the point very clear that membership is for believers, but it saddens me that such a point must be made in a book discussing how to appropriately assimilate people into the church. When a congregation lacks a clear understanding of the nature of the church any assimilation program will resort to pragmatism. How pragmatic were the first Christians in the establishment and building of the church?

In my congregation, we need to do a better job of listening to our membership. The systems that have been effective in the past are no longer working due to societal shifts. With this in mind, we will begin using some of the ideas presented in the book, but at the same time, we are developing and teaching a thorough ecclesiology in order to ensure our methodology is consistent with scripture.

The conversation mellows as the two friends turn toward the upcoming Ligonier National Conference where Justin hopes to find some Abolish Human Abortion protestors to troll if only he can get a ticket. In the end, Martin has a positive view of Facebook because Scott Bradley of Post Modern Jukebox played his "Desperado" request during a Facebook Live interaction. Within the first few pages of Ignite, I knew where the book was going to go. Searcy references Rick Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Church by sharing the all too familiar target analogy. The idea is simple: move people from the community into the core of the congregation. This book focuses on how to bring people from the community into the crowd of folks attending so they can later move closer and closer to the center of the target: the core.

The genius of the book is that it has sequels built in. The outline is already set, all one must do is write out a methodology for moving from one group to the next, add some fictitious examples, and blammo! Book deal.

Don’t get me wrong, the book isn’t terrible. In fact, it has some good ideas in it, but it seems like a rehashing of Warren’s uber popular church growth book and I had already read that one. Anywho… let’s get on with the good stuff.

The basic gist of Searcy’s method is to have a big event that is built up for several weeks, supported through marketing channels, executed with a high degree of professionalism, and actively followed up upon. Most ministers know the days where they will have higher than average attendance. Emphasize these days, plan well for them in the preaching plan, encourage the congregation to invite folks, challenge the whole congregation to something greater on those days, and follow up with guests. That’s the whole book.

The best idea to take from Ignite is the idea of consistency in communication. Searcy seems to argue that the best boot to ground measure to take in developing an evangelistic spirit with the congregation is to continuously communicate the need of the people to evangelize. He recommends peppering all the functions of the church evangelism as a value so that people are more likely to engage in the activity. When the people internalize this oft-repeated message they will naturally begin bringing others into the crowd gathering for worship.

The worst part of the book is Searcy’s rather flippant understanding of evangelism. He tends to use the word as if it means inviting people to church. That isn’t evangelism. Evangelism is the communication of the Gospel to the nonbeliever. In the system described, the work of the church member isn’t evangelism, but an invitation to be evangelized by another. There’s nothing wrong with this, but it’s a mistake to call something evangelism that’s really promotion. Maybe I’m just being a snob here, but it seems like a problem to me.

Ignite reads quick and has some good methods for making the most out of big days in the life of the congregation. It heavily relies upon Rick Warren and the Saddleback methodology for church growth. It has been proven effective in numerous locations around the US and may just work in your area as well. There’s nothing ground breaking in the book making it required reading, but it isn’t a waste of time either. If you hate Rick Warren, and I know some of you do, don’t bother with this one.

Maybe I’m just being nitpicky, but it seems like Thom Rainer only writes one book. As I read through Who Moved My Pulpit I couldn’t help but be reminded of I am a Church Member and The Unexpected Journey. It might be because all these books share similar content (they all deal with church leadership, something Rainer certainly knows a lot about) or maybe there is a higher level of repetition in his writing than I’m used to, but it will probably be a while before I crack open another of his works. With that little caveat in mind, let’s talk about why you should always lift with your legs when moving a pulpit.

Who Moved My Pulpit is a book about how to lead change in a congregation. It may surprise some to hear that good leaders are always interested in change, but it’s the truth. Leadership is moving others toward a preferable future – notice all the change language in that statement. There is movement, that movement is directive, the destination is superior to the current location, and it is forward in time. Those are four change terms used in defining leadership. I bring all this up because the readers of this article are most likely members of the congregation I pastor and might be interested to know how I define successful leadership.

Rainer doesn’t make any incredible observations in this book. It is primarily a reminder that making changes in a congregation should be done slowly. He emphasizes prayer as the starting point and continues to repeat the need for prayer throughout the book. He also leaves the nature of the changes that need to be made up to the reader. This is very positive considering all the advice flying around the internet about church growth methodologies. Rainer assumes the reader understands the nature of the changes that ought to be made and outlines the ideal way to make it happen.

My favorite line is one he lifted from an earlier book: you make changes in a congregation the same way you eat an elephant – one bite at a time (it’s a paraphrase). At Glennville First Christian Church there are so many changes I’d like to make the task seems overwhelming. I make the joke that we are going to change everything twice before I’m done, but the reality is that I’d like to develop a love for change in the congregation so that it is one of our core values.

I may use Who Moved My Pulpit again, but it will likely be for the illustrations or to point congregants to an easily accessible book on leading through change.

Does the Two Bearded Preachers podcast break the rules for acceptable behavior for pastoral people? Probably not. In this week's episode, Justin and Martin discuss the many benefits they receive from the podcast. There's a little bit of history told and the original plan of the show described, but it wasn't a good idea so the Bearded Brothers just started recording their regular conversations and the show got a lot better. Later in the episode, they talk about how they give advice to their congregations and the burden of eggnog.

Can a podcast be overly produced? The Two Bearded Preachers certainly don't think so, but it might be possible to overly produce a worship service. In this episode, Martin and Justin talk about sincerity in worship as they consider the implications of using decidedly secular music in the formal worship of the church. They also recount stories from their time in youth ministry and recognize that they are far more suited to the pulpit. Another area of discussion is men's health. Justin and Martin talk about the social awkwardness of the hernia test and tie it into their mutual love of podcasts. Oh, and Imagine Dragons rocks.
