The photography industry has changed a lot in recent years. Photographers used to be scared to charge a lot, but now I see the pendulum swinging the other way and very new and inexperienced photographers want to jump in charging a high price when they don't have the experience or brand to back it up. BUT I totally get why they're doing that, their time is valuable and so is their work. So when is your work "good enough" to charge full price? That's what we'll talk about today!

This podcast was born when the world was at a shaken and uncertain state. I started out the show talking a lot about COVID with the very best ideals in mind, looking forward to when things "get back to normal” and “when this is over.” So it’s kind of sad that here I am in October 2021, still talking about it.

COVID is most definitely on our minds every single day. For sure, all of us have been affected by it in some way. So in today's episode, I wanted to talk about running an in-person service business, like photography, in today’s times with updated perspective.

I really love this quote from Warren Buffet. He said: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” The concept here is that when others are turning away from something, that’s the time for you to take a second look at it.

Going against the grain looking at possibilities and not necessarily just following what everybody else is doing is so POWERFUL.

Do you want to improve your thinking and your mindset by #ChallengingTheNorm?

In today's episode I will share with you the 3 questions I asked myself to change my thinking, improve my mindset, and lead me to hitting those coveted $10k months with photography.

And one of those lessons is that anyone can change their relationship with money by making small changes over time. So today, I'm going to share 3 common beliefs that photographers have about money (if you're listening to this, I can pretty much guarantee you have at least one of them) and how to overcome those thoughts, so you can improve your money mindset to make more money every month.

As a kid, around Thanksgiving, we would write down things we were grateful for, right? Maybe you had a tradition you did at school or with family where you’d go around the table and share 1 thing you’re thankful for.

And these are great traditions, right?

But as I’ve gotten older and become a wife, mom and business owner, I’ve realized… why is this gratitude practice a one time of year thing? Should gratitude be something we think about and say out loud every day?

In this episode, I’m sharing how to live a more joyful life through gratitude (and it might not be exactly what you think)! Here are 3 reasons to be grateful in any circumstance and really tangible action steps for HOW to do it!

I see a lot of birth photographers making a critical mistake right now, and I want to talk about it today!

They think, “If hospitals are only allowing 1 visitor then I can’t promote my business or get clients because I can’t photograph their birth.”

And I get it! So many other birth photographers are pressing pause on their business until hospitals open back up.

BUT, this is the kind of thinking that keeps birth photographers from growing.

The world has never seen anything like COVID the affects it’s had on us in our lifetime, this is true. With the hospital restrictions, birth photographers worldwide have most definitely been impacted.

In this episode, we're discussing how our studio is handling COVID as photographers who specialize in birth!

Thats ZERO clients to 11 in her first year in business! A few weeks ago I did an episode about race and the injustices black people face in America. I have limited experience and limited knowledge but in that episode, I said I don’t know, but I’m listening and I’m learning. Which is why I am bringing on Farah Antoine-Mayberry. She is a wife and mother of 5 kids. She is an occupational therapist, a certified lactation counselor, a birth doula, as well as a midwife's assistant. She is the founder of For the Village, a non-profit seeking to develop Black birthworkers and provide birth services within the Black community as an intentional way to address the astounding health disparities affecting Black families. She is passionate about what she does! I’m really excited to dive into this topic today so we can take a good look at why black women are 4x more likely to die in childbirth than white women in the US and how our generation can make the change that is so desperately needed.

As a small business owner or photographer - have you wondered how to network with other businesses? And how to create partnerships with other businesses? What do doulas and midwives look for when working with birth photographers? What would put a birth photographer on a midwife or doula’s “do not use” list? This episode is for you!

I’m chatting with my friend Megan Jennings who owns Natures Blossom Birth here in Oklahoma City. She’s a birth and postpartum doula, a midwives assistant and runs a doula agency. She and I have worked together many times and I’m happy to call her a great friend of mine.

Have you heard the expression, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime?”

That’s my philosophy with my students when they come to me asking questions.

The easy thing to do (for both of us) is tell them the answer.

The worthwhile thing to do, is for me to teach them how to uncover the answer for themselves. Because then, they’re “fed for a lifetime.”

In today’s episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes for a coaching call I did recently with some of my marketing school students and we’re looking at the answers to these questions:

Have you ever had to give an elevator pitch? If so, what does it sound like?

Did you hit 10k months solely shooting births or is it accumulative between your courses and newborn photography as well?

Is there a good place you would recommend to get a contract or are you willing to share what you use?

Do you have any flash tips?

What was the most impactful thing you did for your business when you felt stretched too thin and had days where you felt like you just couldn't get your business off the ground?

I’m going to say upfront, I’m very uncomfortable as a white woman doing an episode about race & equality.

However I’m willing to be a little awkward and fumble and mess up because I wholeheartedly believe this is way past due.

From me personally as well as the white community in America as a whole. I am not claiming to be an expert, I am an absolute beginner. But, I didn’t want to carry on business as usual with the podcast without addressing this right now and also letting all of you know that I will continue to work towards becoming an ally both personally and professionally to the black community.

Just like we talk about all the time in our businesses, change happens OUTSIDE your comfort zone. I’m willing to get uncomfortable here today for the sake of equality. REAL change. Even if, as a white person specifically, it feels awkward, will you join me?

Here’s just the truth y’all… Being consistent is HARD! Maybe you’ve asked yourself: How do I show up on social media consistently? How do I keep creating content for my blog and website as a mom entrepreneur and photographer?

You know what my friend, no one ever said growing a business would be easy. But, it is WORTH IT. If you’re ready to put your game face on & level up your business (whatever stage you’re in) by choosing to lean into the power of consistency … today’s episode is for YOU sister!

When I started in birth photography 8 years ago, every time I posted a photo, I thought - Will this offend someone? Will people unlike my page if I post this? Is this photo “too much?”

If even 1 person thought it was inappropriate, I let it affect my business, my marketing and my confidence. These fears & insecurities swirled in my head and slowed me down, until I realized… “If I have a passion & drive for birth photography - it’s for a REASON. It’s because I’m made to be a birth photographer.” And the same thing is true for you my friend! Your passion isn’t there on accident, and that passion is not something everyone feels!

Then, I started sharing photos that lit me up. Photos of babies being born. Moms in the throws of labor. Families meeting those babies in the hospital room and at home. Sometimes photos of placentas 🤭

And you know what? I got unlikes and unfollows. But I also got a LOT of new people liking my page, following along and hiring me!

So, I’m here to encourage you!

I pushed through those fears, and now have, photographed well over 100 births, a photography studio in my town, 3 team members and retired my husband with my birth photography business.

Which is why in this episode, I’m going to share with you my top 5 tips for new birth photographers (things I wish I knew back then).

Would you believe me if I said that I truly believe the path to your best life as a mom & creative entrepreneur is through self-care?

Here’s the deal: I know how often the buzz word “self care” get thrown around.

But despite it’s trendiness, I know there is a lot of value to the idea of self-care! So, I want to unpack “self-care” to discover …. what does “self-care” really look like day to day? Why does it matter? And, how can you actually use self care + personality tests like the enneagram to create the path to your best life?

We’re digging deep in a fantastic conversation with my friend Liz Cook, owner of the International association of birth photographers, on how to ACTUALLY take care of yourself in a way that improves your life, your family’s life and supports the growth of your business.

So many photographers right now are overwhelmed, stressed and undercharging. They’re burnt out, not loving photography anymore and almost ready to quit because it feels like they can’t limit the number of clients they serve by specializing, but they also can’t get hired photographing all the genres right now!

No matter what industry you’re in, the biggest problem most boss moms make when starting their business, is thinking that they can’t specialize or niche down because they’ll limit number of clients they can serve, which means they’ll make less money.

This mompreneur is asking herself things like, How do I choose a specialty or niche? As a creative entrepreneur, are the riches in the niches? How can I niche down and still make the money I need to earn?

Maybe you’ve had similar thoughts too.

In this episode, I’m going to show you how niching down can actually make you more desirable to your ideal customer, help you get hired, make more money in your small business AND work less in your business.
