In this recovering from injury episode of the Athlete Wellness podcast series, Lilly Wehman and Thomas Kalapurakal discuss what it is like to experience an injury as an athlete. More about Ann Foster:

Ann has earned two Master’s degrees; one in theology from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University and the other in counseling from National-Louis University. She is a clinically licensed counselor in Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, and Ohio, as well as a licensed alcohol and drug addiction counselor Level II (LADAC) in Tennessee. She holds certifications in alcohol and drug counseling, sex addiction, and multiple addictions. She’s also a certified Daring Way counseling facilitator (CDWF) and is fully trained in EMDR Therapy.

Ann now lives outside Nashville, Tennessee, and does most of her sessions virtually. Her practice consists of individual and group counseling. She also facilitates intensive individual and group workshops. Her main objective is to offer the recovering individual a safe place to express feelings and heal traumatic wounds.

Ann sat on the Advisory Board for the International Institute of Trauma & Addiction Professionals (IITAP) for many years. IITAP oversees the CSAT/CMAT certifications and its curriculum, developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes, author and pioneer in sex addiction treatment. She also received certification from Brené Brown’s organization, The Daring Way, and facilitates individual sessions and workshops with this ground-breaking curriculum.

In addition to almost three decades of clinical experience, Ann brings over forty-five years of personal experience to the recovery field. She believes that no matter a person’s problems, healing and freedom are possible. There are no hopeless cases.

Sarah Meister

Sarah is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and received her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University. Sarah previously worked as a Public Relations Specialist in the Chicagoland area after receiving a Bachelor’s in Journalism from the University of Missouri. She shifted careers to focus on her passion for counseling and psychotherapy.

Derek Bylsma

Derek is the Executive Director of Millennium Counseling Center and heads our 3A and Sports divisions. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a nationally board-certified counselor. He is also fully trained in EMDR Therapy.

About 3A, Intensive Treatment Program

3A was developed by Ann Foster, Derek Bylsma, and Oren Matteson. 3A offers extensive support and wrap-around care for individuals during critical transitional times of their recovery, including, but not limited to, the time between leaving inpatient care and transitioning into everyday life.

Personalized Attention: A dedicated therapist is responsible for creating and managing a specialized program of wrap-around care tailored to the individual’s needs using Millennium’s proven methods in addiction treatment. Counseling sessions for the client and their core group of family and friends to establish roles within the client’s recovery support network.

Continued Accountability: Daily individual counseling sessions. Inclusion in a recovery group that meets weekly. Accountability to a Millennium counselor seven days a week.

Radical Acceptance: Homework assignments and exercises to help clients accept addiction as a deadly disease and keep recovery first. Counseling sessions introduce how addiction has impacted everyone and the need for continued support for the whole family system.

More about Derek Bylsma:

Derek is the Executive Director of Millennium Counseling Center and heads their 3A and Sports divisions. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a nationally board-certified counselor. He is also fully trained in EMDR Therapy.

In addition to having wo bachelor’s degrees from Kalamazoo College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Derek also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Roosevelt University. After a successful career in business and with strong family ties in the helping professions, it became apparent that Derek’s true calling was to help those struggling with life’s many challenges.

Derek specializes in recovery-related work, mood disorders, co-occurring disorders, and issues unique to athletic performance. He is particularly enthusiastic about leading the sports division at Millennium Counseling Center as it marries two of his lifelong passions; helping others and athletics. As a soccer player, Derek was a two-time college All-American and All-Big Ten player and after graduating, went on to play professional soccer in the United State. More recently, Derek’s ties to athletics shifted from player to coach and he has been recognized as one of the top High School soccer coaches in Illinois. His experience as a high-performing athlete and coach, as well as his extensive experience in the mental health field, provide clients in Millennium’s Sports division unique benefits.

Derek draws from his own life experiences and insights to help others see the power of having choices in life. He believes “It all works out in the end. If it hasn’t worked out, it’s not the end.”
