Today we're gonna talk about the variable income earner survival guide, or the five emotional and practical steps to a strong financial foundation.
What You’ll Learn:
Mindset:
Money mindset is crucial for understanding your relationship with money and the obstacles you’ll face in the journey to financial success.
It is an ongoing process of improvement and growth.
Budgeting:
Budgeting is essential for variable income earners to manage fluctuating income effectively.
Start with identifying mandatory living and debt expenses to determine your minimum income goal.
Include extra expenses to establish a stretch goal, considering the extras in your life.
Connect your income with your sales or business performance to achieve your stretch goal.
Savings & Insurance:
As a variable income earner, building savings is vital to cover expenses during low-income months.
Having an emergency fund acts as self-insurance, preventing reliance on credit cards.
Proper insurance coverage is necessary to protect your financial progress in various areas of life.
Debt Payoff:
Expedite debt payoff to minimize costs and improve financial stability.
Aim to pay off high-interest debt, such as credit cards, to save on interest expenses.
Balance debt payoff with saving to ensure you have a safety net during low-income periods.
Investing:
Saving alone won't make you rich; investing is crucial for long-term wealth accumulation.
Take advantage of recession periods to invest and capitalize on potential opportunities.
Investing allows your money to work for you, providing long-term returns and financial growth.
The goal is not just to control your money but to master it. Take ownership of your financial situation and actively implement the knowledge and resources available at MKB.

Do you have a financial scarcity mindset? Mills identifies seven ways to know if these limiting beliefs are holding you back. And if so, how do you move towards a life full of financial abundance?
Your brain wants to be right. So much so that it'll try to prove itself right. That’s why reframing your mindset in a positive way is a powerful tactic when it comes to achievement.
The first step to financial literacy is to have a realistic approach to your finances. A realistic approach means establishing a budget that aligns with your goals. This will give you just enough discipline for the present, but allows you to set yourself up for future success. And small changes will have a long lasting impact. So be consistent.

Throughout the month of August, Mills Knows Bills has been covering a host of topics relating to financial goals and how to achieve them. In this final episode of the financial goals series, Mills shares a little secret that is not often addressed when you do finally reach the goal or goals that you have been saving towards…it feels kind of weird!
The thing about saving is that it becomes a habit and like any habit, it develops into a routine that becomes part of our daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. When you do reach a financial goal for say a downpayment on a house it can be a bit odd and even a little scary to see all that money seemingly “disappear” all at once.
Mills is here to remind us that large purchases such as a house don’t simply obliterate the huge amount of savings required to obtain them, but rather, your money has simply switched from a liquid asset to a large piece of equity. Yes, it can still feel a bit scary to have spent all that money on one purchase, but remember that by doing so you are putting your money to work for you, and barring any unforeseen disaster or market collapse you will get that money back and more when it comes time for you to sell your home and take the next step in your financial journey and more importantly your life journey!

In this special micro-pod edition of Mills Knows Bills, Mills breaks down the rules of the financial “game” that we all are playing by laying out the four guidelines that everyone must ask before making financial decisions. Often times families or individuals strive to complete financial milestones without asking these four key questions which can lead to frustration or even failure.
In this episode, Mills will help you avoid this frustration by laying out each key question and why they asked both before and during key financial decisions. She lays out how to ask these four simple questions: how much money do I need, by when do I need it, what obstacles stand in the way to this goal, and finally, can I truly afford it?
This deceptively simple quartet of questions is vital to both developing your goals and establishing the budget that will allow you to win this “game of goals” and find financial freedom!

It’s a pleasure to meet you, my name is Mills!
Some of you may be wondering, what is “Mills Knows Bills,” and how did it come about?
In the fall of 2014, I sat in my dorm room stunned that I only had $1.50 in my bank account. I said to myself, “that’s it?!?” – no credit card to fall back on, no savings account…nothing. Where did all my money go? How am I going to eat? How can I manage my finances better? These were all questions that flooded my mind; But where should I start? I began keeping track of all expenses and income on a spreadsheet, changed my major to finance, and obtained various positions in the finance industry.
Throughout the past five years, I’ve improved upon this spreadsheet, paid off $25,000 in debt in two years, and have become a budget planning expert. My experiences led to the creation of practices that have allowed me to help many others obtain financial freedom by cutting down the learning curve.
