Michael was four years old when his mother cut off his right index finger and was twelve when he “got high” for the first time. He spent most of his childhood homeless and in poverty. Clueless about what he wanted to do with his life, he spent all his teens selling drugs, breaking into houses and stealing cars for survival. What he thought would bring an end to his troubles, is money.

Money did come. At twenty-one, he started making a six-figure income. However, things took a turn for the worse. He became morbidly obese, smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, drinking himself to sleep, and more. Life became a disaster for him.

Nothing changed for the better until he acknowledged his past and accepted the reality. “I was leveraging and using my trauma as an excuse to not show up for myself,” Michael confesses. This key moment prompted him to start living his life with the motto, “no excuses, just results.”

Now, Michael is a motivational speaker, coach, mentor, and author. He assists people in “understanding and overcoming” their childhood trauma with practical tools so that they can create the life they want to live. He also hosts Think Unbroken Podcast as part of his mission to make a difference in the world.

In this episode of the True North Man podcast, Paul and Michael have a deep conversation on childhood abuses, their impact on life, and recovery from that. Your guest helps you understand: “the past traumatic events may be your foundation, but they cannot determine your future.”

  • Why he was scared to acknowledge his past harrowing experiences.
  • How childhood trauma affects adulthood and how damaging it can be.

Is hunting a blood sport or a sport that’s in your blood? Unlike many, Robbie believes hunting is not merely killing animals. It’s something beyond that with a broader perspective. Men are natural hunters as he reminds saying, “If you go back in your lineage, someone had been a successful hunter for you to be here.” Whether you’re a non-hunter, new to the sport, or a seasoned pro, it’s hard to deny that “hunting is in our blood”.

Robbie Kroger is a scientist. A native to South Africa is now a proud American and a member of the hunting family. While most hunting shows focus on the sport and the ultimate kill of the quarry, Robbie likes to portray the hearts of the hunters to the people. His podcast shows are a sort of smorgasbord of everything related to this sport.

In this episode of the True North Man podcast, Paul and Robbie talk about the importance of hunting, its positive aspects, what it does for wildlife and human life, and many interesting facts. Why do men and women differ when it comes to expressing emotions? Unlike women, most men tend to hide emotions. They are conditioned to believe that expressing their feelings is out of character with the male identity. However, suppressing emotions and feelings can be incredibly toxic and detrimental to a man’s mental health.

Jack strongly empathizes with men as he says, “There is a kernel of truth to the fact that men's needs are just not part of the picture these days.” He had been a social worker and always looked up to a healthy society with equity in the true sense. He always knew at the back of his mind that along with the male and female relationship issues, multiple social problems are cropping up for society’s lack of awareness of the gender issues of men and boys.

At present, Jack Kammer hosts two podcasts called Men Are Talking, where he interviews men and the other one is Goodwill Toward Men, in which he interviews women.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Jack delve deep into the core beliefs of gender identities of men and women, and consequent gender issues of men, how men have been conditioned to be masculine, their inhibitions in articulating their emotions, their suffering, and all leading to grave concern in society. Tune in to this episode to gain insight.

What you will learn:

  • What kind of impact does a father's presence have in a family unit.
  • What are men’s needs in the current scenario, and how fulfilling those can level out a balance between the sexes.
  • Why the concept of work-life balance is relevant as much for men as it is for women.
  • How important it is for men to become vulnerable and vent out their emotions freely.
  • And much more!

As a formerly incarcerated felon, Jay Dan Gumm understands all too well the ways his background was against him. That’s a big part of why he named his top-rated podcast, now streaming in prisons and jails across America, “Background Check,” and it’s why he became founder and CEO of Forgiven Felons, too.

A nonprofit organization that Jay runs with his wife, Forgiven Felons equips men with housing and the life skills needed to turn over a new page in life: “I just wanted to have a landing place for men to get out of prison and successfully reenter society,” he says.

For a lot of men, and incarcerated people in general, where they first go after leaving jail or prison isn’t often a space that sets them up for success. That’s part of the reason rates of recidivism are so high. Nationally, combining numbers from federal and state prisons, the recidivism rate is almost 80%. It’s something Jay has seen happen to people he’s close to, and it’s a pattern he wants to help change.

In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Jay talk about what led Jay to “willfully walk away” from God and his faith earlier in life and ultimately landed him behind bars, and how he’s using his experience to help others today.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Jay learned to embrace the word “felon” without letting it define him (and why he says God wanted him to)
  • How a stint in solitary confinement opened his heart to the Holy Spirit
  • Why so many people wind up re-incarcerated, and how he hopes to change that
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“We want to help more people get out of prison and successfully reenter society so they don't go back. Because that's a huge problem. It's called recidivism. And the church has a recidivism problem, too. Recidivism is just a relapse into old patterns. It's all behavior, and even in the church, there's a tendency and a temptation to go back to your old ways and your old patterns. And so we exist to help guys not recidivate.”

Clay Smeltzer is sometimes asked why he coaches men. The answer? He knows what it’s like to not have a purpose. For much of his life, he had “no d*** clue” who he was and was “faking everybody out” — himself the most.

“I’ve been through the sstorm of sitting here on my couch, having a panic attack, watching a TV show and going, ‘Is this really what my life is about?’” He says. “Am I going to wake up every day filled with anxiety and this shame cycle that says, ‘If I can’t take care of myself, and I can’t fix myself, how the h am I going to fix anything else?’”

As a husband, as a father and as a professional, Clay felt he was constantly letting everyone down — this, when he’d made all the “right” choices. He’d gone to college. Found a steady career path as a teacher. Got married. Had kids. Bought a house. And still, he felt “worthless.”

Eventually, Clay was able to confront the major role anxiety was playing in his life. That’s when things started to change for the better. Today, he helps other men identify and confront the negative thought patterns, fears, and trauma that are keeping them stuck in destructive patterns without a purpose. On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Clay tell each other their stories of forging a foundational identity after years of living without one.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Clay came to learn the lesson that “nobody validates me but me”
  • How he went onto form a coaching “brotherhood” after recognizing there are “a lot of men out there who are hurting”
  • What it looks like to define and rebuild masculinity
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“Men get stuck in these same shame cycles. We get stuck in this negativity about ourselves. We get stuck in the expectation that ‘I have to be this, when my reality is here.’ And having a difference between your expectation and your reality causes this frustration. And then we get into the monotonous cycle; we wake up Mondays, we go to work until Friday, we live for the weekend, and we do the same s all over again… and we’re sitting there going, ‘F. What’s going on?’”

Shea Taylor’s instinct to protect others and, as he puts it, to “beat up bad guys” comes in part from having been bullied himself. Growing up in Eastern Kentucky, he had a lot of health problems; as a high school freshman, he was 5 feet tall and weighed just 88 pounds.

“My dad was a high school janitor,” Shea says. “We weren't financially rich by any stretch of the imagination. I grew up on a dairy farm in a two bedroom house with five brothers.”

He remembers being picked on a lot, and working hard: “You had to grind for everything.” But when, toward the end of high school, he shot up to over 6 feet, put on weight and started excelling in baseball, that was when “everything clicked.” Which is why, after breaking his leg playing baseball and later damaging — then losing — that same leg in a motorcycle accident, Shea had to contend with what limited mobility meant for his identity and for his self-confidence. Spoiler alert: He’d go onto become one of the first amputees to fight in the MMA.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Shea talk about perseverance and letting your faith help shape your resilience.

What You’ll Learn

  • How, after 15 days in the ICU, 12 surgeries and a lot of prayer, Shea ultimately made the decision to lose his leg
  • What it’s like to be one of the first and only fighters with a prosthetic in the MMA
  • How Shea is giving back to where he came from as an entrepreneur today

When Dr. Benjamin Page was still a student in chiropractic college, he found himself internally nearing rock bottom. In addition to the stress of schooling and the overwhelm of deadlines, he struggled to navigate emotional problems and staying in the present moment felt near impossible.

“I was kind of sick emotionally,” he recalls. “I was talking to myself in a way that I shouldn’t be talking to myself.”

That was when he discovered the healing powers of gardening. He’d built a plain planter box, about three feet long and a foot wide, and he also found some flower pots that had been thrown away. After assembling and spending 15 minutes in that space — his first garden — he could already notice a difference. He felt better.

“I clearly remember that those 15 minutes of just hanging out with that planter box and these two flower pots with peppers and tomato plants was life-changing,” he said. “I started to feel that I could do it, and those 15 minutes brought me into the present moment. I was able to just focus on one thing.”

As a chiropractic physician today, time spent in nature is a massive component of Benjamin's approach toward holistic health. In his book, “Playing In The Dirt: The Key to Sustainable Health,” he lays out eight ways that nature and gardening can help us heal in a multitude of ways — spiritually, physically, and emotionally. In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Benjamin talk about how nature helps the body, mind, and soul heal and the reasons ecotherapy can help men provide better for themselves and their families, too.

What You’ll Learn

  • What Benjamin believes modern medicine can and can’t do
  • Why it’s so important to go outdoors barefoot (and how that can help your body neutralize excess free radicals and reduce inflammation)
  • What the Bible has to show us about the importance of gardening for health
  • And much more!

Demetrye Isoldi grew up in a broken home.

His mother was verbally, physically and psychologically abusive to him and his sister, and she would sometimes sleep with men in front of them. His biological dad was a rapist and pedophile who spent most of his time in and out of jail, and his brother today is serving three life sentences for murder. But it was the harm done to him by his mother that left the biggest mark.

“All she knew was hurt. All she knew was pain. And that's what she gave me,” he said.

Recovering from the pain of his childhood and eventually going to seminary inspired Demetrye to write his book “Son of a Whore.” It was in the seminary that he was finally able to leave survival mode, with all its scarcity and insecurities, behind him and embrace the man God wanted him to be.

“I wrote that (book) because I wanted to give someone who may have had the same upbringing as me hope to realize that they can survive it, and not only survive but be the father, the husband and the individual that God created them to be,” he said.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Demetrye talk about forgiveness and becoming the parent you didn’t have.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Demetrye’s faith has helped him overcome the scars of his childhood, including fear, insecurity and sex addiction
  • What it means to live a heart-centered life as a Christian
  • What it took for Demetrye to eventually forgive his parents
  • And much more!

“One of the things that I've really become comfortable with is embracing pain. We're quick to become averse to pain. We resist pain. We're quick to grab onto joy, happiness, all these things, because it feels good… look at Christ. He endured pain. if he hadn’t endured pain, we wouldn't have what we have today. So pain, if we allow it, can be a teacher to teach us something. Instead of avoiding the pain, sometimes you need to sit in that pain to learn whatever it is that we need to learn.”

James Jacobi felt he was following in his father’s footsteps when he entered the corporate world straight out of college. It was a life he went onto live for 11 years, and he did well in his career — but all the while, it felt like he was expected to be two entirely different people.

“I struggled with that,” James said. “I mentally bring work home, and I mentally bring stuff from home into work. And so I always struggled with that mentality. I can’t be two people… that dichotomy felt weird to me, and I felt like many people live that life. It just didn’t sit well with me.”

Something in his heart, which he now recognizes as a nudge from God, kept telling James he needed a change. A business could be done differently, he felt, in a way that allowed people to be whole people. That didn’t mean turning profit wouldn’t also be a primary goal — a business is a business. But it was time to redefine what doing well in business looked like and what values it promoted.

Today, as the author of “Radical Integrity: 7 Breakthrough Strategies for Transforming Your Business, Sales and Life” and also the owner of his management consulting firm, James gets to help others live lives that are not only successful but holistic and integrated, too. In this episode of True North Man, Paul and James talk about the value of blending the personal with the professional and utilizing the gifts God gave you — no matter the amount of risk involved.

What You’ll Learn

  • The one question that completely changed James life and sent him down a different path
  • Why, as an entrepreneur, he says it’s so essential to pick your audience (and make it a niche one)
  • How his faith helped him leave his corporate life
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“This is my dream for my life… And it's got all the emotions mixed into it: the anxiety, the worry, the joy, the gratitude, the fulfillment. It's got all of it. In many ways, I think the entrepreneur’s life is very, very aligned with your journey with God. You’ve got roller coasters, you’ve got adventure, you’ve got seasons of abundance, and then you have seasons of scarcity, where you need to trust more.”

Joshua T Berglan knows there’s value in owning your pain.

For too long, he found ways to escape his pain, as well as to escape the pain he caused others. Before he found God six years ago, he’d been arrested six times for a number of reasons, domestic violence, cocaine and alcohol-fueled fights among them. And yet, he’d never been in jail for longer than 12 hours at a time; “I didn’t really feel any pain,” he says. Meanwhile, having been abused, molested and abandoned earlier in life, he continued hurtling head-long down a dark path.

Then, during his sixth time in LA County jail, while he was in the psychiatric ward’s isolation unit, he had a moment with the Holy Spirit. Since then, he’s lived by a “bold faith” and dedicated himself to a new mission as Chairman of the Live Mana Worldwide Foundation, a new media nonprofit that elevates passion and purpose through TV, film, events, vision consulting and brand development services.

In his ministry career with Live Mana, Joshua works specifically with those who can also understand the hell of addiction, homelessness, living with HIV, abuse and more. Part of battling your demons, he believes, is not looking away from the pain.

“The whole point of what we’re doing is to make people feel the pain so they can really look inside and go, ‘Oh my god, this is my story’ or ‘this happened to me, here’s the solution,’” Joshua says.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Joshua talk about finding redemption, giving a voice to those who’ve been rejected and left behind (including by the church), and embracing God’s truth.

What You’ll Learn

  • How an encounter with the Holy Spirit in a jail’s psychiatric unit led Joshua to turn his life around
  • Why finding God doesn’t mean your healing and recovery work is instantly over (“I had a month-long meth binge in the middle of me loving Jesus,” he says)
  • Why he believes in the “supernatural power of truth”
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“You can’t outrun your problems. You can’t outrun God. You can’t outrun any of it. Because every time you think you’ve escaped it, it’s going to come hit you in the face again. But guess what — that’s not the devil. That’s God giving you an opportunity to break through and heal.”

Nine years ago, as Aadam Adkins tells it, he had all the hallmarks of a successful life. He had a plush job in corporate America that let him travel the world and offered plenty of perks. And he felt he’d checked a lot of the boxes that were expected of him.

“I lived the life I was supposed to live — I was that guy who just fell in line,” Aadam says. “I was the kid who got good grades in high school. I went to college. I got a degree. I got a good job, got married, had kids… It was the perfect life. I was successful by the world’s standards. And yet, something was awry.”

Despite his successes, at the end of the day, Aadam felt he was “really lost.” He was burnt out at work, seeking more and felt he’d been “wandering in the desert for a long time.” That’s when he found God, and everything began to shift.

With a new sense of direction in life, Aadam decided it was time to change his path even further. After 17 years in his corporate role, at the age of 40, he stepped out on his own to start his coaching business. It’s been both the “scariest thing” he’s ever done and also the most rewarding: “This is a dream life, doing what it is I believe I've been put here to do,” he says.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Aadam talk about taking on new adventures and finding the path God intended for you.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why mastering your mind and making, per Scripture, “every thought be obedient to Christ” go hand-in-hand
  • How Aadam integrates meditation into the way he practices Christianity
  • How deciding to run 40 miles ultimately changed Aadam’s entire life
  • And much more!

Rob Billingham knows it’s all-too-easy (and human) to stray from your sense of identity. For many men, in particular, he believes this goes back to harm done to their identities as children — by not having a supportive father around, for instance.

He also knows that a strong sense of faith is one of the most transparent ways to guarantee and protect a strong identity. That’s why faith and identity are two of his main focuses as the founder of Resolute Men Ministries. A ministry that’s styled as a “training camp,” Rob had the idea to create Resolute Men after attending a men’s conference that brought together football players, retired football players, and head coaches to discuss their relationship with Christ.

At that event, God gave him the vision to start his own men’s conference. But soon, he realized that standalone events like conferences weren’t enough to generate the kind of impact he was after.

“It was mighty and moving, but what we found out over the years was that, with follow-up, there was a disconnect along the way,” he says. “There’s one big day, and guys would be high as a kite… but unless there’s somebody to push you, keep it moving and keep it going, it kind of starts to drop off over time.”

Rob wanted his ministry to be a source of accountability for men as they created Christ-like lives and came to understand their own identities better. And today, that’s what he’s accomplishing. In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Rob talk about the importance of identity in understanding what you’re created from and where you’re heading.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Rob defines a “resolute man.”
  • How you can tell when God is trying to impart to you a message
  • Why waking up early helps Rob be a better spiritual leader
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“The Bible is our playbook… You got to get into the game, but you’ve got to be prepared to get into the game. What does that preparation look like? You’ve got to go through the process of training where you’re working your muscles, right? We’re working our spiritual muscles. That’s what we’re talking about here — developing our spiritual muscles, getting our minds in alignment with God, and getting our strength and our character built up in Christ.”

Today, “mindset” has become a majorly buzzy term, with plenty of self-styled gurus out there offering opinions on how to better it. For Dr. Nick Sotelo, a life and career coach and formerly a marriage therapist, sports coach, academic and corrections officer, his take on mindset is, at its root, both impactful and simple one: “Mindset is what your mind is set on.”

Through his coaching process, The Upgraded Life, Nick blends his scientific knowledge of psychology with personal development tenets designed to help clients examine their vision and core values and clarify their mindset in particular. As Nick puts it, your mindset is profoundly shaping your lived experience, whether you’re aware of it or not.

“You can’t escape it. Everybody has a mindset,” he says. “The problem is too many people are just unaware of it.”

And for a truly successful, fulfilled life, achieving that awareness is vital. In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Nick talk about the hurdles society has set up that keep men from reaching an understanding, the exercises he recommends for figuring out your mindset’s current state (and what’s needed to improve it), and how being a “drink-from-the-firehose” guy ultimately led Nick to find his calling.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Nick helps men learn to integrate their feelings in meaningful ways (plus, how the “four primary feeling states” intersect with that)
  • Why having mindset clarity will help shield you from external chaos, like COVID
  • What Nick means by “negative-default mindset,” why most people have it and how affirmations can help
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“To achieve meaningful success, it’s going to come back to your mindset and what your mind is set on. It’s about your attitudes and your beliefs. It’s about your fears and how you’ve learned to address your fears. It’s about your doubts and how you’ve learned to address your doubts… The problem is, too many people either don’t believe they have control over their mindset, or they’re just not aware that their mindset is one of the biggest factors responsible for the life they have right here, right now.”

Though he built a career working for some of America’s most giant corporations — including Coca-Cola, Home Depot, and David’s Bridal — Tracy Brinkmann has always been an entrepreneur at heart. It’s a love that goes back to his school days in Copperas Cove, Texas.

From steering the supply and demand of pencils in his grade school classroom to selling art inspired by his father’s military career to pinstriping cars and working on stereos alongside a high school buddy, Tracy always had his hand in a side hustle growing up. But his true calling as an entrepreneur was, for a little while, put on hold while he served in the military and, as a new dad, embarked on his corporate career afterward. Like so many entrepreneurs before him, though, he knew he couldn’t stay in the corporate world forever.

“There’s always that thing in the back of your head going, ‘But I’m just not happy,’” he says. “It’s just not me. It’s okay for a while, and then you’re like, ‘Okay, I got this. Now what?’... You’re just not fulfilled.”

Working in Corporate America did give Tracy plenty of experience, however, in coaching and mentoring others. And today, this coaching has become his full-time job and life’s mission. As a business and success coach and host of the Driven Dark Horse Entrepreneurs podcast, Tracy gives other entrepreneurs the tools they need to kickstart business ideas and, as he puts it, “discover the joy of getting a dollar for something they’re going to be doing anyway.”

In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Tracy talk about why being passionate about your side hustle pays, the importance of picking the right partners, and some of Tracy’s most significant pieces of advice to new entrepreneurs.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why Tracy believes in following the “Six Cs of Entrepreneurship.”
  • The questions he recommends asking yourself to find clarity and get your business idea off the ground
  • How to approach reinvesting in your business, gaining traction organically, and balancing multiple bank accounts
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“It’s all about building yourself a plan of action and then holding yourself accountable. You have to be committed to your success. This is usually where the help of a trusted partner or a coach will come in because there's a point where we'll be nice to ourselves — a lot nicer than someone else will be, right? And maybe you need a pat on the back, and a coach can do that. Or maybe you need a smack upside the head.”

Erik Allen’s life started usual enough, full of Sunday school and Little League games. But when he was 11, his parents got divorced. That’s when things took a turn for the worst.

His mom’s new boyfriend, an extremely abusive alcoholic, moved the family to a tiny town in Montana, a population of 1,200. It suited his purposes of isolation well; after arriving in Montana, the abuse “just got worse,” Erik says, “because we were so far away from the police and so far to town.” Eventually, he had to physically come to his mother’s defense, a night that ended with the cops arriving but no charges ultimately being pressed. For Erik, that drove home the message that he was on his own.

“I've pretty much raised myself since I was 14 years old, and it led me down a path of darkness and addictions,” he said. “At 21 years old, I was $28,000 in debt... I’d moved 21 times between the ages of 18 and 21. I’d filed for bankruptcy. I’d already been in jail. Just a crazy path.”

Not long after, Erik moved to Seattle to try to make it in the music business industry. He didn’t get paid a lot — at Universal Records, he wasn’t paid anything at all for his first six months of work — but he did get a lot of free concert tickets. And they all came with open bar tabs. “It was about 175 concerts, and I never paid for a drink ever and got blasted every single time. It was just wild, man.”

But it wasn’t making him happy. Depressed, aimless, and still plagued by addictions, he knew he needed a significant change in his life. One day, that change presented itself when a woman, also from a broken home, walked into the Starbucks store he worked nights at and asked if he wanted to go to church with her.

In this episode of True North Man, Erik tells Paul about how that woman became his wife, his path to becoming a successful entrepreneur, and how he’s rewriting the legacy of his upbringing for his kids.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How Erik became an entrepreneur who helps other entrepreneurs and MMA fighters be successful (and what those two groups have in common)
  • How he and his wife are “breaking the chains” of their childhoods
  • Erik’s (literal) come-to-Jesus moment and the role his faith plays at home and in his work
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“My faith is everything… I don't push the fact I'm a Christian on my shows, but I show it in love. Quit judging people. Just love on people the way they're. I've been there, and I know what it's like to be broken. But you can get through it.”

Ryan Hawk became a student of leadership at a young age. Benefiting from what he calls the “exceptional” leadership of both his high school football coaches and parents, he understood that an exceptional leader has the power to transform lives for the better.

“When you see that a person can have that type of impact, I became much more curious about learning from other leaders in my life,” he says. “That curiosity has driven me to try to learn more and more, ultimately intending to impact other people and help them perform at levels that maybe they don’t think they’re capable of.”

Learning is a crucial emphasis for Ryan. He is, after all, host of The Learning Leader Podcast, as well as a leadership coach and author. It’s his ultimate goal to, as he puts it, become a “learning machine” that can inspire others to elevate their own goals. And although he’s been in the leadership coaching business for years, he doesn’t consider that goal achieved yet. That’s because a true leader has “never arrived but is always becoming,” he says.

In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Ryan discuss working on yourself as a leader and defining your leadership legacy.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The four-part framework for more effective leadership that Ryan developed
  • Why good leaders are constantly “fueling their intake engines.”
  • The difference between leading yourself and leading others
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“There are leaders within businesses who have a title and think they’re leaders because of who they are. But really, they’re followed and complied with because of their title. And so I want to go beyond the title and become the type of leader that others choose to commit to because that’s what true leadership is: when people can choose to follow anyone, and they choose to follow you.”

The role of police in America has been under extreme scrutiny over the past year. What does the path for healing look like, and what can accountable policing look like? Dr. Obed Magny believes the answer lies, in part, in emotional intelligence.

“If emotional intelligence has been proven to be effective in the public and private sector, and in just about every industry — in resiliency, stress management, and handling conflicts — why would we not do that today in policing?” Dr. Magny, himself an emotional intelligence trainer and de-escalation expert with 16 years of experience in policing, said.

Far too few resources have historically been devoted to cultivating things like emotional intelligence and cultural awareness in police units, he continued. For all 18,000 police departments in the U.S., most only devote a maximum of four to six hours of training — if that — to emotional intelligence topics in their six-month academies. And the result is hurting not only the people being policed but also the people doing the policing.

“This is where my passion lies,” he said. “We talk about emotional trauma because trauma can be physical, but the mental part of it is just as, if not more, prevalent. And so if we’re going to heal as a nation moving forward — if we’re going to build on trust and legitimacy moving forward — there’s got to be an understanding of the other side.”

Through his work with the American Society of Evidence-Based Policing — the organization he co-founded to help bring science, research, and empathy into the way law enforcement implements the law — he hopes this understanding will be achieved. In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Dr. Magny talk about what it’ll take to innovate police systems for the modern era, for the benefit of all.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How a lack of research and development led to the crises facing police officers today, and what police units can borrow from the private sector to correct that
  • Why it’s important to see police as part of the community instead of separate from it
  • How Dr. Magny describes his approach to leadership
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“Emotional intelligence training is one way to mitigate issues and establish trust, legitimacy, and an understanding of different people, different cultures and subcultures, and so on. Growing up with an abusive father led John Ward to believe at an early age that his life had little worth. There was no escape from the abuse — mental, physical, and emotional — that he endured. Ultimately, he’d seek that escape at every turn in life after dropping out of high school at age 16 to pop pills, fight and steal with his friends.

One particularly bad fight led John to military school in exchange for the jail time he was facing. There, he started to feel the first glimmer of self-worth he’d ever known in life, but still left the military feeling embittered by its lack of accountability for those in power. After that, it was back to a self-destructive lifestyle, one marked by violence, cocaine addiction, and membership in an outlaw motorcycle gang.

“I was a victim. I was a victim no matter what the circumstance. I had no self-worth… And what that does to somebody, not feeling worthy, is it will lead you into places you never would have expected yourself to be in.”

One of those places, John was horrified to discover, was repeating the cycle of his own father’s hostility with his wife, their daughter, and his step-children. Still, saddled as he was by drug addiction and little will to live, John couldn’t find the motivation to change his life. Until God reentered it unexpectedly.

In this episode of True North Man, Paul and John talk about the power of finding self-worth through God and breaking free of the cycles of your past.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How the idea he’d never be good enough became a poison that nearly ruined John’s life
  • What’s helped him maintain his sobriety for five years
  • How John and his wife, through the church and marital counseling, changed their family dynamic to one of love and mercy
  • And much more!

In 2001, Alan Placer was content enough with his life.

He was married with a child, a new home and a stable job. When he was unable to answer what additional goals he had in life, his boss warned him that “if you don’t grow, you’re gonna grow stale.” At the time, Alan didn’t believe him. Six months later, he had lost that job, and two weeks after that, 9/11 terror happened.

“I wound up responding to the World Trade Centers,” Alan, who’s also a Firefighter EMT, said. “Thankfully I’m one of the people who got to come home, but obviously with a lot of PTSD issues. I saw horrible things there and escaped death several times.”

He emerged from that experience “awakened.”

“I understood what ‘going stale’ was. That I was just, like so many men do, settling for what came and what was in front of me, only taking advantage of opportunities if someone told me they were there.”

From that point on, Alan’s life — and his relationship to fear — changed. On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Alan talk about how he went from a newly divorced single parent making $15 an hour to overcoming fear, starting his own business and transforming his life.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How Alan separates being fearful from being cautious (and why it’s still good to be the latter)
  • The lessons he’s learned guiding his business through the pandemic
  • And much more!

To some, “sovereignty” is a loaded term. That’s because the idea that you’re the one with power over your life can seem at odds as a Christian man with the message that God is the only sovereign. But that’s not the way Ryan Michler, founder of Order of Man, chooses to look at it.

“The concept of sovereignty is in direct alignment with the concept of Christianity,” he says. “God has given us agency over our own lives… If you didn't have any agency, there would be no sin. There would also be no glory, right? If you were forced to do something — if you had to do it a certain way because you did not have any authority over your own life or any agency — there would be no plan of salvation. It wouldn't be necessary, actually. What makes it so rewarding is that you do have agency and that's a gift bestowed by God.”

Ryan has made it his mission to reconnect men with their sovereignty and help them reclaim power and authority in their lives. God has given us a personal responsibility to do that, he says, and it’s up to us as individuals to act on it.

On this episode of True North Man, Paul and Ryan talk about living a life that’s aligned with your virtues, the importance of seeing balance as an active verb instead of a static goal, and how sovereignty can help you be a better man.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How Ryan developed a “four-quadrant approach” to help men reclaim their sovereignty through Calibration, Condition, Connection and Contribution
  • Why he believes that most people fail to intentionally use their time
  • How he, as a father of four, applies the principles of his faith to parenting
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“It's not ‘if it's God's will.’ It's ‘if it's your will.’ But people don't like that language. They think it's at direct odds with Christianity, and I happen to believe it's directly in alignment with it. I think what God is hoping we’ll do is take these tools and resources and use them effectively by our own accord and produce positive outcomes for ourselves and the people that we have responsibility for.”

Roy Edwards has been “obsessed,” in his words, with making remote work a reality since long before the pandemic started. It’s the basis of the business he started with his wife, Capitol Presence. And it’s also a mission that, for Roy, has highly personal meaning.

That’s because, at 12 years old, Roy was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease. In the short-term, that meant clocking hours in doctors’ waiting rooms and being pulled out of sports. In the long-term, it meant big consequences for how — and where — he’d be able to most comfortably live his life. An office, he began to think, may not be for him.

Ultimately, Roy did start his career in an office, working for the government. Until a particularly bad flare up sent him to the hospital, where it was determined that he’d need about a foot and a half of his intestines removed.

“I was sitting in a hospital bed with my intestines literally hanging out of my stomach,” he recalls. “I had an ostomy bag, and I’m laying there in excruciating pain. I had to pull out my laptop and work. I was able to take off about a day and a half of this and was in the hospital for three weeks, working from the hospital. I was like, screw this.”

The inflexibility he felt from his employer during a time of crisis ultimately galvanized Roy to help create better workplace flexibility, for himself and others. From the hospital, he and his wife filed for an LLC, and now, six years later, their agency is delivering top-of-the-line customized products and solutions to businesses.

On this episode of True North Man, host Paul Beam and Roy talk about creating a life on your own terms, going into business with your spouse, and why we should all be able to #workwherever.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The exercise Roy recommends for figuring out how to leave corporate life behind
  • How to apply the lessons of 2020 to every year (and why we should)
  • Why it’s OK not to use your degree
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“That's what innovation is. God has given us the tools, but we have to change. Dr. Paul Henning — an active-duty Army officer who specializes in warfighter health and performance — has always been interested in the way optimized bodies yield optimized minds.

In the Army, that interest has led him from everything to biomedical research on what soldiers should eat before specific types of missions to the pioneering of new injury-reducing physical assessment tests. Outside of the Army, Dr. Henning applies many of these same principles to a different kind of soldier — namely, working parents.

A father of four himself, Dr. Henning is also a strength and conditioning coach who helps busy parents find holistic solutions that enhance their health, energy and mindset using a combination of behavioral psychology, exercise and nutrition. And for the working dads these solutions often have a transformational impact.

“As men, I think we put a lot on our shoulders,” he says. “I say to myself, ‘I'm responsible for my family. I gotta provide, I gotta be there, I gotta show up and provide emotional support for them’… I think it's very important to have our fitness in check, because it just helps us stand up and be better men.”

On this episode of True North Man, host Paul Beam and Dr. Henning talk about the connection between a healthy body and a healthy life, why Dr. Henning joined the Army after getting his doctorate in Exercise Physiology, and what other working dads can learn from his example.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How Dr. Henning’s work in the Army helps improve soldiers’ health and well-being
  • Why creating new “habit loop mechanisms” is one of the biggest goals he works on with clients
  • How journaling, meditation and “nutrition IQ” can help your overall fitness goals
  • And much more!

Ask Chad Owen what one of the biggest problems plaguing society today is and he’ll tell you without hesitation: fatherlessness. That can mean fatherlessness in the literal sense, but it also applies to those whose fathers have been absent emotionally, spiritually or mentally. And the gaps left behind by this kind of neglect are often severe — they were for Chad’s own dad.

Entering the foster system at age 12, Chad’s father ultimately wound up living with an abusive uncle. Although Chad believes he did his best, the wounds left behind by this experience never fully healed for his father, and they came out in some of the ways that Chad, in turn, was parented. It’s all part of a vicious, and common, cycle that harms so many people’s identities — something that Chad, now a father to four children himself, felt called by God to write about. But by forging resilient identities that are rooted in Christ, he believes that people can put an end to this cycle.

“If you have an identity that you’re a child of God, that your Father is the king, and you have the Holy Spirit inside of you, that now drives your purpose,” he says. “If you listen to the Holy Spirit and follow your vision he gives you through your identity, that's when you become unstoppable.”

On this episode of True North Man, host Paul Beam discusses with Chad the key to healing broken identities, solving for the problem of fatherlessness, and better embodying unconditional love, to ourselves and others.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why a strong identity can impact the trajectory of your entire life
  • Where true wealth is found, and how to use it to help others
  • Why it’s so important for men to experience silence and solitude
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“Some people unknowingly mistake purpose for significance. I believe another thing that men are looking for is significance, and we try to find in all the wrong places — going out partying with friends, sex, drugs, alcohol. Even business, you know, money. Collecting all the goods in the world and fancy cars, nice homes… When in reality our significance, if we’re talking about identity, is found in our identity being rooted in our Creator and our Heavenly Father. Because he finds us valuable.”

Whether we’re right or wrong we tend to attach to a faith and a God. The purpose of religion and faith is to guide an individual or a group, it is not the destination. Once you get to the destination the religion or faith has served its purpose, whether it’s Buddhism or Christianity, etc. We ought to talk to one another to strengthen our faith through the sharing of ideas. Through the discussion of ideas we strengthen our communities. As Christians we should not shy away from people who believe differently. We should embrace the different ideas in a manner that allows others to see Christ in us. This is the epitome of “living in the world, but not being of the world.”

On this episode of the True North Man podcast, Paul and Rev. Sam talk about faith and the purpose it serves. They add a refreshing perspective on Religion and invite the listener to look deeper into their faith and perhaps find a way to walk the line without compromising their values. Tune in for an episode that will give you a view of how a Buddhist and a Christian can engage in meaningful, thought provoking dialogue without attacking or judging each other.

What You'll Learn:

  • Religions from all walks of life have more commonalities than we may have thought prior.
  • How sharing our beliefs and perspectives may add value to another who may have a different religion or faith.
  • We strengthen and sharpen one another through thoughtful discussions.
  • And much more!

"One of my tactics is I ask somebody towards the end of the process, I ask them so what is the one you care about most in doing all of these, taking this action or whatever. It's amazing the information will give you because they tell you their highest concern and then you get to help them take care of that, right? And that again is serving. It doesn't sound like a closing tactic, but I've learned to ask that question at the end so I can actually make sure that people will get what they want over what I want. I always make sure that they always get what they want."

I think the real way to transform our society is through families because that's the structure that has the highest degree of influence and for good or for bad, really the way it works out but i wanted to be for good. So I want to strengthen these men and help them show up as better versions of themselves for themselves, and better husbands, better fathers that they can have in their house in order so to speak as they show up in the world. Because the impact that your home life can have an impact in your community and whatever influence you have is huge. It can make or break your ability to add value to people."

Who do you lead in your own life? It might be as simple an answer as your kids or your church small group - but you are a leader. And if you’re leading without direction (or even without realizing it at all), then you could be doing so much more.

Justin’s passion for true leadership grew out of his time coaching others in the fitness space. He began to see the unfulfilled leadership potential in the men around him who lived without clear goals or healthy communities, and set out to help guide those men to take a lead role in their own lives and the lives of their families and communities through speaking and coaching.

On this episode of the True North Man Podcast, Paul and Justin tackle the role of healthy competition and purposeful goal-setting in cultivating strong leadership skills, the most impactful qualities you can have as a leader, whether on a large scale or small, and finding ways to connect with the men around you that lift everyone up together. Listen in to step into your God-given role as a great leader in every part of your life.

What You’ll Learn:

  • What tends to happen when a man’s goal-oriented nature isn’t given a goal to go after (and what tends to fill that void)
  • Why leadership is not a solo endeavor, and how to lose the myth of the “lone wolf” mentality so you - and those you lead - can thrive
  • How to step up and set the goal or vision for the people you lead without turning into a dictator or undervaluing the strengths and needs of those people
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

What drives you in your worst moments? Those days when you feel on edge or lash out at your loved ones… How long has it been since you sought help to figure out what might be hidden beneath the surface, one hand still on your emotional steering wheel?

Jeremy Roadruck, also known as The Kung Fu Guy, poures his time, his expertise and his heart into helping families grow more confident, closer than ever and emotionally safe through his individual coaching, group programs and podcast, The Parenting Program Show.

On this episode of the True North Man podcast, Paul and Jeremy tackle the fundamental biology and psychology of - and strategies for - overcoming trauma, developing the ability to communicate well with those around you (including your partner) and with yourself to maintain a healthy sense of balance, and navigating the energies, motivations, needs and styles of the masculine and feminine within your relationship for a full, impactful, radically loving life. Tune in for an interview to get you started getting out of your own head and back to a connected and healthy reality.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How unconscious trauma manifests itself in our lives and impacts our beliefs, behavior and relationships, and how we can shift our mindset and the context of our memories in order to heal
  • Why a lot of men don’t ask for help, support or anything else they need (especially from other men), plus the important shift in beliefs that helps us move past the urge to be silent
  • What the disconnect looks like between masculine and feminine sides in a partnership, and how to address the gap and bring both parties back to center
  • And much more!

“It really comes to, what do you need to learn from this, the learning of which will allow you to release this quickly and easily? And if you sit on that question, because questions control your focus, ‘What's wrong with me?’ will give you an answer. ‘What's great about me?’ will give you an answer. Which one's the better question to ask? So you’ve got to put your questions on the place that you want to be, that compelling future, that larger version of yourself, that truer sense of yourself. Your questions are designed to get you over there. So, ‘Why?’ is usually a horrible question.”

Are you committed to improving every piece of your identity? It’s normal to hyperfocus on working out every day or reading constantly or reaffirming your faith - but have you figured out how to bring your mind, body and spirit into balance together?

Josh Tyler is the founder of Savage Gentleman, a brand that seeks to encourage men to embrace both the sides of the coin and become the best version of themselves. Between his podcast of the same name, online store and upcoming curriculum for men who want to level up their self-improvement, Josh is taking his expertise to motivated guys all over the world.

On this episode of the True North Man podcast, Paul and Josh dive into what it means to be a savage gentleman - that is, to find the balance between savage and gentleman that so many modern men are missing, and tackle topics like Josh’s developing guidelines for finding that balance, the importance of distilling the thing you’re pursuing into a concrete goal (or set of goals) to stay on a healthy track, and why Jesus is the best example of a savage gentleman. Listen in for an interview that will get you started pursuing your purpose like a savage.

What You’ll Learn:

  • What problems have arisen among men in our society due to the lack of a purpose, a battle to fight and an adventure to live (and how to get started fixing those problems by reawakening our forgotten savage side)
  • How to deductively figure out which aspects of your life you haven’t tapped into, and where that void might be showing up in your day-to-day experience, both mentally and physically
  • Why the social environment as we grow up sets us up for failure, and how to navigate building a healthy peer group in spite of the obstacles in your way
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“There's the idea of like, men’s self improvement, right? Like we, as guys, kind of get confined to a certain box. And the idea is that there's another side of the coin. And there's a lot of aspects that we should be pursuing, not just relegating ourselves to being confined to this very narrow definition of what a man could and should be. So Savage Gentleman serves as a reminder to, like - hey, man, be a savage. Also be a gentleman, and don't go too far on one side of the other and neglect the other aspects of being a man, because there's a lot of guys who fall too far on one side or the other.”

  • What our starting point and foundation should be when we begin to seek vision for our lives

In a worldly sense, I've been set free from many of the things in my past that I allowed to control me, that were not serving me well, that were not serving my family well. And so I've been set free from the bondage of desires that hurt myself and hurt those around me. And I've been turned on to a path where I do the exact opposite."

Favorite Quote:

"So what is your vision, gents? What is it that you would like to do in life that is going to make a mark? And I don't mean for selfish gain. I don't mean for fame. I don't mean for relevance. I don't mean so that you are noticed in a way that some people may like to be noticed. What I mean is an impact that is positive and makes a mark, lives well beyond you, well beyond your years, well beyond your existence."

Favorite Quote:

"Change is not easy. Change requires us to figure out who we are, who we want to be, what we're doing to get where we want to be, and what we're not doing to get where we want to be - and, quite frankly, what we're doing that's actually pulling us away from who we want to be. Or should I say, who we are meant to be."
