Together they bring to light yet another Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Carol shares about the covenant God made with Abraham, promising to make him a father to many nations. Host Bethany welcomes this week’s guest, Catherine Hernando, to Fulfilled on the DWITW Podcast for a discussion about Jeremiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would be the victim of a murderous plot. Bethany and Catherine trace themes of exile and return, hostility and reconciliation, and division and unity throughout the big story of the Bible— all leading us right to the cross, to the hope we have in Jesus.
Catherine is passionate about adventurously chasing the impulses of the Spirit and seeking out the paths imprinted by God’s manifest presence. Be encouraged by the hope and assurance we have in Christ, and the magnitude of God’s love for His people displayed by Jesus. It is our prayer that His fulfillment of this prophecy will build up your faith and cause you to sense the deep love of our Father-- especially during this difficult season.
Esther wants to live in a world where the Church meets needs so radically that programs like foster care or food stamps are no longer necessary. When she is not mothering her bio and foster children or leading worship through song, you can find her performing in one of Dayton’s theatre companies, where she seeks to bring the gospel to the local arts community. Esther’s favorite ways to recharge are enjoying good books and taking long walks out in nature. Her favorite books of this year so far include “None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us and Why That’s a Good Thing” by Jen Wilkin and “You Are The Girl For The Job” by Jess Connolly.
One of Esther’s favorite Bible passages is 2 Corinthians 12:9-10: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Today Bethany wraps up Season 7 of the DWITW podcast with Kasey Parr. They talk about how Rural Ohio Women in the Word began, how Kasey came to believe the Good News for herself, and how God has been faithful to use the unexpected for her good and His glory.
Kasey wants to live in a world where there are no more tears, and no more pain. When she's not spending time with her wonderful husband and four amazing children, you can find her reading a good book or studying her Bible. Her Bible has really come alive to her, in the last few years, thanks to some of the tools she learned from Dayton Women in the Word. After spending time with her sisters at DWITW, God placed a desire in her heart to start a ministry in rural Ohio (Rural Ohio Women in the Word) to encourage other women in their pursuit of Jesus Christ. It is a two-fold ministry: teaching Bible study tools through Bible study and encouraging women in their walk with Jesus by hosting events that target areas with which women wrestle.
As this ministry grows ROWITW hopes to provide Bible study resources, blog posts, podcasts, and whatever the Lord lays upon their team's heart to share with women. Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” is a Scripture that really encourages Kasey's heart. God gave her this verse when she was going through a very difficult season. This verse helped Kasey to walk through this challenging period. Knowing God is always with her gives Kasey great comfort.

Jennifer Zumrick would like to live in a world where one’s body felt as young as one’s mind! When she is not taking care of patients, she is taking care of children. She enjoys antiques, visiting flower gardens, and hanging out with her family - especially her four granddaughters!
One of Jennifer’s favorite verses is Ecclesiastes 12:13, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”God used it to reassure her she was free to pursue a career in nursing. Jennifer was 13 or 14 at the time and wanted to be sure she chose a path aligned with His will. She understood she didn't have to be in “Full-time” ministry to be fully used by God.
Listen in as Teresa Beach joins Bethany on the DWITW podcast to discuss the importance of being able to share truth in its most simple form. They also discuss taking the time to look at who God has in your life right now to see how He is already at work. Teresa also shares about how a hunger for hope and inner healing drove her to a heart-changing relationship with Christ, and how she has been learning to both praise God and serve from a place of suffering brought on by chronic pain. Her parting words to listeners are an encouragement to be willing to be messy and do it afraid. Obey the call to share. The gospel is beautiful enough to capture people’s hearts.
Teresa Beach, born and raised in Dayton, is a Christ follower who has experienced the beauty of God's Spirit and His Church in the midst of life with chronic illness. She loves living life with her Apex house church family in West Dayton. She is passionate about equipping the Church to better serve and reach chronically suffering people, building relationships with refugees in Dayton, encouraging women to know and study the Word, and fostering a sense of family in her house church. She loves learning Arabic, playing guitar, spending time with kids, hiking in the woods, her cat Mowmow, and frozen margaritas.
On this episode of the DWITW podcast, Bethany sits down with Audrey Craig to discuss how, through studying God’s Word, the Spirit began to reveal the freedom from fear that was, and still is, available to her in the person of Jesus. Audrey also shares how she has seen the ways our own sin can be a challenge in sharing the good news and how the echo of lies can break us down, yet Christ is ever faithful to build us up again.
Audrey wants to live in a world where God's people faithfully read His Word, walk in obedience to it, and speak the truth with boldness and grace. Sarah Mosconi joins Bethany on the DWITW podcast to chat about becoming a junior high teacher in Troy, which led to leading Young Life, coaching cheerleading, and how, ultimately, all these things are avenues for her to share the Gospel in life. At the heart of this conversation is a wonder at the miraculous nature of each person’s story of coming to know and believe the Gospel and the importance of continuing to knowing our great need for a Savior.

Today on this special episode of the DWITW podcast, Jillian interviews our dear sister, Mindy Braun. You will want to grab your tissue box for this episode as Mindy shares the story of her beautiful daughter, Marlow. Please know that if you find yourself in a sensitive place right now, this is a story of infant loss and we do not want that to come as a surprise to you as you listen. In the final session of this summer’s study on the Gospel of Mark, Kaitlyn walks us through chapter 16 and then gives a recap of the whole summer. In chapter 16, she teaches about the women finding the empty tomb and running away in fear, Peter and the disciples still being loved by Jesus, and then takes a couple of minutes to dwell on Christ’s resurrection. She then discusses how the final twelve verses of Mark 16, verses 9-20, were likely not written by Mark, but were later added by scribes. Reviewing the summer, she looks at how Mark accomplished his goal of presenting evidence of Jesus’ identity as the Christ and as the Son of God. Finally, she looks at what the truth about Christ’s identity means for those who follow Him and are citizens of the upside-down, backward Kingdom of God.

This week, Kaitlyn covers the final days of Jesus’ life as chronicled in Mark 14-15. She walks us through the events of each day, beginning on Wednesday with the chief priests and scribes seeking Jesus’ life and ending on Friday, with His crucifixion and burial. We’ll see Jesus anointed for burial by a woman who lavishly pours out her love for Him. Shortly after, Jesus feasts on the Passover meal with His disciples, foretells His betrayal, institutes the Lord’s Supper, and predicts Peter’s denials. Kaitlyn then walks us through Jesus’ prayers in Gethsemane, His betrayal, His trial by the Jewish religious leaders, Peter’s three denials, and Jesus’ sentencing, crucifixion, and burial. We leave the Savior of the World buried in a rock tomb as this lecture ends, and we’re left with the question: who do you say Jesus is? And what are you going to do about it?

In Session 6, Kaitlyn lectures over Mark 11-13. She opens with a discussion about the different sections of Mark, and then launches into this final section in which we will see how Jesus becomes the Messianic King. She then covers Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, which includes His prophecy-fulfilling entry into the city on the colt of a donkey, His cursing of a fig tree, and His cleaning of the temple. Next, she looks at four questions asked to Jesus by the different religious leaders of the day, and then Jesus asks a question and issues a warning to the people against the scribes. This warning concludes Jesus’ public ministry. Lastly, she walks through the Olivet Discourse, in which Jesus speaks about the destruction of the temple and signs of the end of the age. She wraps up with a look at who Jesus is and how people responded to Him in Mark 11-13, and then briefly presents the homework for this week.

This week, Kaitlyn lectures over the “connecting section” in Mark, Mark 8:27-10:52. She begins with a broad strokes look at what has happened in the first 8 chapters, and how Mark has answered the question “Who is Jesus?” Then, she teaches about Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ. Following Peter’s confession, Jesus foretells His own death and resurrection three different times, and Kaitlyn walks us through these three conversations as well as the discussions about the cost of discipleship that follow each one. She shows how the economy of the Kingdom of God is often upside-down and backward, and she discusses what it means to take up your cross, the deceptiveness of wealth, and the seriousness of sin. She ends with a look at who Jesus is and how we can respond to Him based on Mark 8:27-10:52.

This week, Kaitlyn lectures on chapters 6-8 of Mark’s Gospel. She begins with a brief overview of the content from the previous week. From there, she launches into this jam-packed session by talking about the rejection faced by Jesus, the apostles, and John the Baptist. Next, she shows how Jesus is the Shepherd King who takes care of His sheep. She then spends some time looking at how much importance Jesus and all of Scripture place on the state of our hearts. Finally, she speaks on how Jesus didn’t only come for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles, and the lecture concludes with a look at who Jesus is and different responses to Him throughout Mark 6-8. Kaitlyn wraps up with a quick word about the homework for week 5.

This week, Kaitlyn lectures on chapters 3-5 of the Gospel of Mark. She begins with a brief overview of the content from the previous week. She then talks about the growing opposition to Jesus, the call of the 12 apostles and how it relates to us today, the Kingdom of God as we see it in Jesus’ parables, and how Jesus is the King of that Kingdom. She also spends some time teaching about the Messianic Secret, how we can discern God’s will, and the “secret of the kingdom of God.” Kaitlyn encourages us to turn our eyes upon Jesus and reminds us faith is an antidote to fear. The lecture wraps up with a look at who Jesus is and how people respond differently to Him in Mark 3-5. She concludes with a brief look at the homework for week 4.

This week, Kaitlyn lectures on the first two chapters of the Gospel of Mark. In her lecture, she talks about John the Baptist paving the way for Jesus, and how Jesus was baptized and tempted before He began His ministry. She then takes us through the first events of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, sharing about His main message: the Kingdom of God is indeed at hand, and the time is now to repent and believe. She urges listeners to know that this is as true today as it was when Jesus said it 2000 years ago. Today is the day of salvation! She then shows how Mark emphasizes Jesus’ authority over every aspect of creation. Kaitlyn ends the lecture with a look at who Jesus is according to Mark 1-2.

This week kicks off our 5th annual Dayton Women in the Word Summer Study! This summer, we will be working through the book of Mark. Over the next 8 weeks, we'll be sharing recordings from one of the sessions here with you on the podcast. As we wrap up our season of At Home in the Word, Lindsey Fulton joins Jillian to discuss on last genre of Scripture: apocalyptic. Lindsey and Jillian look at the challenges of symbolism, structure, and sequence within apocryphal writings, as well as pausing to reflect on what this genre reveals about Christ before considering what is means for the future. While this can be a daunting genre to jump into, at its core it is meant to be an encouragement to the people of God who are living in the reality of the current world, while anticipating their forever home with God to come.
Bethany and Jillian sit down to talk all things epistolary on this episode of the DWITW podcast and how this literary style helps us gain a big picture view of Jesus. They discuss who wrote which epistles, why they were written, and what we can learn from them today as 21st century followers of Christ. They also touch on how these letters help us value understanding historical context and the surprising importance the people mentioned in these letters can carry.
This week, Erin Shaw joins Jillian on the podcast to dive into exploring the gospel literary genre and how to get started studying the books that fall into this category. They discuss how the gospels highlight the redemption portion of the Bible’s metanarrative arc and the good news they are infused with. They also look at how these books are theological biographies of Jesus, which describe teachings and events from His life that reveal how He fulfilled the law for all as the Messiah to all nations.
On this episode of the DWITW podcast, Mary Thomas joins Jillian to take a look at the biblical genre of prophecy. Today Amy Kelly joins us via Skype on the DWITW Podcast! Amy shares how she was ready to fully transition to living in Mexico, but God had another plan for her and her time. She reminds us that “His control is the best control,” and how God gives us everything we need to do what He is calling us to do. In our second chat with Amy, she is still located in Cancun, Mexico and has extended her time there. She shares of her struggle with identity, specifically in the things she does and checking off the boxes and relationships. From Amy’s testimony we see that God is at work in the mess.
For the second time on the DWITW podcast, Daisy Dronen joins us! She shares about working through transitions with a new baby and the hospital she works at closing. She has been focused on decluttering and simplifying her life in many areas to make room to breathe. In our second chat with Daisy she shares of more transitions and changes with her kids, her body and healing in her relationship with the Lord. A truth that Daisy shares that she would tell herself six months ago is that “Actually you’re always in transition. Don’t sit waiting. Reach Out.”
We welcome Hannah Simon to the DWITW Podcast this week! When we first chatted with Hannah she shared about some health issues she was going through and how it was isolating, but she was learning to rely on and be with the Lord in it. In our follow up conversation with Hannah she tells us how her heart is and how her lifestyle has changed because of it. In this season, she is learning how to distinguish the Lord’s voice by daily coming before Him and how to be vulnerable, especially in community.

Back in January, Becky talked with us about her identity in Christ, her adoptions, and her motivations behind mothering and studying the Bible. Within the last six months, God has been providing for and pursuing both her and her kids. Specifically, God has used the book of Hosea mightily to show her His relentless pursuit within her life.
This week on the podcast we welcome Julie Swain! When we first chatted with Julie she was about to embark on a journey to China to adopt for the second time! She also shared about her past of broken relationships and how that has enabled her to empathize with orphans. In our second talk with Julie, she shares about the joy and hardship of bringing her daughter home from China. Along with that, she also tells of a season of brokenness that her and her husband have been walking through and learning the importance of self-care because of it.
Today, we kick off the new season with our friend, Jessi Morter! When we first talked to Jessi, she was newly married and had just bought a house with her husband. She shared and talked through Romans and how it's less about following rules and more about being called to freedom and obedience through love. In our second chat with Jessi, she shares exciting news that she will be starting a new ministry role as Bible Study leader at her church! We also dive into Hosea and how God revealed His exclusivity specifically to her in how if we are going to be truly following Him, then we must reject everything else.
On this special episode of the DWITW Podcast, Mashawn Rigmaiden joins us to chat not only about her life, but also about a ministry to women that are so dear to her heart. God has used her story to be brought to a place where she can empathize and come alongside women in the porn/strip industry. As Dashawn shares, we are encouraged to see the preciousness of God's pursuit. We see His never-ending pursuit for Mashawn, for women in the porn/strip industry, and for all of us.
In our final session, Natalie shows us how chapters 13 and 14 give a review of all of the major themes of Hosea - Israel's unfaithfulness, God's judgment, and Yahweh's steadfast love.
Natalie highlights in chapter 13 how Israel is using their God-given talents to worship idols, and how we can be tempted to do the same. She talks about how there is a very real danger of forgetting God, who is our Helper, both for Israel and for us. Though this judgment on Israel is not the final word from God.
In Chapter 14, Natalie teaches on Hosea's final call to God's people and his framework for repentance. She talks about God's promise to heal and love Israel freely and abundantly, even in the midst of their sinning. She specifically draws out two things: 1) Hosea's garden metaphors and their beckon for growth and repentance among the people, and 2) Hosea's appeal for the wise to heed his words and repent.
In this closing session of our Hosea Summer Study, Natalie closes by sharing what happened in history after Hosea's prophecy and asks us to consider how the reading of Hosea might have changed our hearts and lives this summer.
In Session 7, Natalie takes us through Hosea chapters 11 and 12. She focuses on the character of God as a Father, specifically how He loves, what His heart is like, and what lessons He has to teach His children.
In the first section, Natalie shows us what God does as a Father in Chapter 11: He loves, calls, teaches, carries, heals, leads, eases, bends toward, and feeds His kids. She asks us to consider how we are responding to God as Father, and encourages us to delight in, praise, and set our thoughts on Him.
In the second section, Natalie describes God's heart as broken, compassionate and confident. She talks about the way Israel's sin has broken God's heart and how He willingly turns toward His people, even amid their disobedience. She urges us to wrestle with the uncomfortable closeness of God's judgment and His mercy - and that they are both true aspects of His character.
Lastly, Natalie covers the lessons that God wants to teach His people from their past. In particular, she explains the connections we can see from the patriarch Jacob's life that God presents in Chapter 12.
In Session 6, Natalie covers Hosea 8-10 in three sections.
In the first section going through Ch. 8, she points out six ways that the Israelites are showing their self-reliance and connects each with the punishment that God declares. She asks a series of questions to encourage us to think through areas in our lives where we may be relying on ourselves instead of on God.
In the second section on Chapter 9, Natalie recounts several losses that the Israelites will experience because of their sin - loss of provisions, Promised Land, paths to holiness, precious items, fertility/future generations and preferential love. She asks us to consider what we are afraid to lose and to lay those idols down at the feet of Jesus, as well.
The last section covers Chapter 10, which focuses on the opportunity the Israelites have to seek the Lord and become planters of righteousness. Natalie encourages us to partner with the Spirit as He plants the Gospel in and through our lives - reminding us to believe that Jesus will be the One producing the fruit.
This week, Natalie covers Hosea 6:4-7:16 in her lecture. In the first section, she talks about God's fatherly emotions toward Israel and His desire to have their hearts and not their "religious" actions. She encourages us to respond to God's extravagant love by giving God our whole hearts, not just our outward affections.
In the next section, she explains the ways that Israel has broken the covenant with God and how they are unable to love God in the way that He loves them (with a hesed, faithful love). Natalie follows this section by walking through the five pictures of Israel's unfaithfulness in Chapter 7: a heated oven, a half-baked cake, a man past his prime, a silly dove and a faulty bow.
Natalie closes by reminding us that in our natural state, we are not able to return God's perfect love. But in Christ, we can! We are able to show steadfast love back to God and others on the basis of Jesus' sacrifice and by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Christ, our imperfect love is being perfected, day by day.
This week, Natalie takes us through Hosea 4-6:3. She covers God's formal charge against Israel and the details of the guilty verdict He proclaims in Hosea 5. She also warns us against having a self-righteous attitude toward the Israelite priests and their folly but instead calls us to examine what we, too, may "glory" in other than God Himself.
Natalie also addresses the lack of wisdom present in the land of Israel during Hosea's time and explains that we find God's wisdom through His Word, His people, and communion with Him. She beckons us to think about what worthless things we might be pursuing instead of the living God.
Lastly, Natalie walks through 6:1-3 which is Hosea's call for the people to return to God in repentance. He calls them to repent so that they may, in turn, receive healing and revival. She reminds us to keep the end in mind, play "the long game," and cultivate eternal perspective during our times of trial. Our call is to press on to know Jesus intimately ourselves, and also to press on in knowing Him together as brothers and sisters in Christ.

In her lecture, Natalie talks about what it means to make a covenant with God, other Biblical covenants, and the specific importance of the marriage covenant (1:2-1:3). She walks us through the significance of the names of Hosea's children and what promises follow from those names (1:4-2:1). Natalie also shares her own story of emotional infidelity in marriage and connects that to the story of Hosea and Gomer. Lastly, she explains how idol worship is classified as spiritual adultery and where the specific results of Israel's adultery are found in the text (2:2-2:13).
