The Strong Women Podcast by Pilates PT is a podcast which celebrates Strong Women from all walks of life.
Founder of Pilates PT Hollie Grant each week interviews strong women who have overcome adversity and achieved incredible things. Now, by saying 'Strong' we don't mean solely physical strength. The Strong Women Podcast also dives deep into mental strength and courage in the careers of the incredible interviewees.
We hope you enjoy the podcast!
Today’s guest is someone I admire massively – it’s a really exciting one for me. Kathrine Switzer is an iconic athlete, author, Emmy-award winning broadcaster and advocate for sports and social causes.
She is often remembered as the first woman to officially register and run the Boston Marathon in 1967. She was attacked in the race by an angry official who tried to rip off her bib number (#261) and throw her out of the race because she was a woman.
Images of this spread worldwide and she finished the 26.2 mile distance anyway and went on win the 1974 New York City Marathon and to champion women in the sport globally, most notably leading the drive to make the women's marathon an official Olympic event in 1984. Nowdays, 58% of all runners in the USA are women.
To celebrate this social revolution, and to support another on active aging, Switzer ran the Boston Marathon again, at age 70, on the 50th anniversary of her iconic run, finishing only 24 minutes slower than she did when she was 20.
This run launched her non-profit '261 Fearless' --named after that famous bib number--which empowers women globally though running. She has been honored widely for her achievements including being inducted into the USA National Women’s Hall of Fame which recognized her for creating positive social change throughout her storied career.
Kathrine has lived the most incredible life, and is such an advocate for using sport for positive change which really resonates with me. This podcast is great for anyone looking for motivation to get those trainers on, or who is as in awe of her achievements as I am. Enjoy.

Todays guest is Clare Bourne. Clare is a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist specialising in caring for women during and after pregnancy. She has worked in the field for 6 years with extensive NHS experience, and now works in private practice at Six Physio in Chelsea. She is mother to a two-year old daughter and is pregnant with number two, and has therefore learnt first hand the physical challenge of pregnancy, motherhood and the pre and post-natal body.
Through her work, she is aware of how alone women can feel in the postnatal period and how they can be unsure where to get help for symptoms that are often embarrassing and difficult to talk about. Clare is also a trained pre-and post-natal Pilates instructor. She uses this extensively within her practice and values the huge benefits of Pilates in pregnancy and postnatally.
In this podcast we discuss pelvic health, incontinence, what really happens to your pre and post-natal body, how to care for yourself post-caesarean, and exercise considerations both pre and post-natally. This is a great podcast for anyone who is pregnant right now, recently gave birth, or gave birth many moons ago. It’s also a must for anyone who works with women in the fitness or health sphere.
I hope you enjoy this first podcast back. I loved learning from Clare and discussing some of my labour with her. If you enjoy it please do share your feedback, or share this with someone who needs it.

Today’s guest is Kim Vopni. Kim is a self-professed pelvic health evangelist and is known as The Vagina Coach (which, by the way, I love).
Kim is the founder of Pelvienne Wellness Inc - a company offering pelvic health programs and coaching for women in pregnancy, motherhood and menopause. She is also the co-founder of Bellies Inc, a company focused on improving births and postpartum recoveries with the revolutionary Ab System.
What I love about Kim is that she is taking a topic that is for some embarrassing to talk about (the vagina and pelvic floor) and completely banging the drum for better care of both.
For too many years women have shied away from seeking help for incontinence, prolapse or general vagina healthcare and this needs to stop.
In this episode we discuss what you need to know about your vagina, how to get comfortable talking about topics that could be seen as embarrassing, and why it is so important we take care of our pelvic health.
This episode is great for ALL women, no matter what their age. It’s time to stop giving our vagina cute names and being red cheeked about talking about them and let’s get educated instead. I hope you enjoy this episode.
Please do leave a review/feedback if you do enjoy this episode: it goes a long way to spread the message of The Strong Women Podcast.

Today’s guest is Siobhan Miller. Siobhan is a qualified hypnobirthing teacher, founder of The Positive Birth Company and author of the book 'Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways To Make Your Birth Better' (https://amzn.to/2VsamdC).
Siobhan’s hypnobirthing journey began in 2014 whilst pregnant with her 2nd child. Her first labour had been relatively difficult, and she was sure she wanted her 2nd to be different. Her passion for hypnobirthing, and with an academic background in Psychology, led her to train to become a hypnobirthing teacher herself and this saw the start of The Positive Birth Company.
In this podcast we discuss what exactly hypnobirthing is, the common misconceptions of it, how it can help change the experience of labour and how a business can grow organically with a lot of passion, and yet little business experience.
What I love about Siobhan is her absolute faith that hypnobirthing can help every pregnant woman. I love her drive to empower women around the world, even if that means low profit margins. Her business is guided by her drive to spread the message, not a desire to be a millionaire.
This episode is for anyone who is pregnant or thinking of becoming a mother, and wants to know more about hypnobirthing and how they incorporate it into their pregnancy.
I hope you enjoy it, and, if you do, if you could leave a review on either Soundcloud or iTunes that would be hugely appreciated.

Today’s guest is professional womens rugby player Vicky Fleetwood.
Vicky Fleetwood plays for both England and Saracens and is a World Cup winner, world cup silver medallist and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist. Just a matter of weeks ago the England women’s rugby team also won the grand slam in the 2019 Six Nations. She is also a personal trainer.
Vicky aims to challenge stereotypes and prove that women can be strong, and capable, and still be womanly/girly. Obsessed with performance and bettering herself, she is strong minded, hard-working and a huge believer that having the right mindset, will always help you achieve more.
In this episode we talk about how team sports can have a huge positive impact on women’s physical and mental health, how to progress in a predominantly male industry and how you can support women in rugby.
What I love about Vicky is the infectious passion that she has for rugby. Rugby is so inclusive and there is no generic body shape or size needed to take part. I have always hated the way that sport has been so heavily defined by gender in the past (boys play football whilst girls play netball) and women like Vicky are helping to showcase how all genders can be great at all sports.
You’re going to love her and I really hope you enjoy this episode. If you do enjoy the podcast please do leave us a review on soundcloud or itunes – it goes a long way to helping the podcast grow.

Today’s guest is Ban Hass.
Ban Hass is a Bullsh*t free Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor and freelance writer. She uses satire, humour & parody to voice opinions and make observations on the fitness industry (#fitspo) on social media.
She is sarcastic, funny and at times brutal about the direction the fitness industry is going and calls out Bullsh*t on those who advise without qualifications. What I like about Ban is that she doesn’t sit on the fence. I have watched the fitness industry change demonstrably over the last 8 years and I’m not always sure how best to prompt change.
Ban is using her clear ability for humour to do so in a way that helps us put fitness into perspective and realise it’s not the solution to all our problems. Whilst she may offend or shock some people along the way (and by her own admission lose followers who don’t get her humour) her intentions are honourable, and you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
In this episode we explore how to stop #fitspo ruining your life, or indeed, affecting it. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Today’s guest is Louise McCullough.
Louise is the first female contestant to pass the selection process on Channel 4’s documentary ‘SAS Who Dares Wins’ and showed incredible grit and determination throughout the most recent series.
To mimic the militarys recent changes of allowing women to apply for all divisions of the services SAS Who Dares Wins opened up its doors to women this year and I was so excited to see the women in action showing that we are as strong and able as men.
Over the eleven day period, Louise and twenty four other participants travelled to South America for gruelling challenges and training, typically used as part of army and special forces recruitment. The process included physical exercises, beastings, interrogation, and more, to identify recruits who would be capable of being an elite special forces soldier.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Louise is a qualified orthopaedic surgeon who graduated from the University of Dundee in 2002. Through her career working in the North East of Scotland her specialist areas of interest include trauma, orthopaedic oncology and sports injuries.
Her hobbies include running, boxing, weight training and staying fit, and she is a doctor for Aberdeen Rugby and the Scottish Rugby Union. These interests are what led her to apply for the show and excel throughout.
What I love about Louise is her genuine love, and dedication, for exercise and sport and she shows perfectly how it can help you to develop a strong mindset. Your body gives in before your mind ever would and she was the perfect example of this.
At 40 years old Louise showed that age is just a number and her mindset pushed her to success on the show. In this episode she gives advice on how to harness that and achieve anything you wish.
I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Todays guest is Carly Rowena, a certified Personal Trainer and CrossFit Coach who focuses on using functional movements to get you feeling your best at all times. Carly has taught classes for brands such as Adidas and Reebok and taken her followers on incredible retreats around the world including conquering Kilimanjaro.
Her ethos is all about finding a passion in the way that you like to move and pushing you past your boundaries, as a new mum and a busy business woman she knows how hard it can be to find time for you which is why her classes are designed to fill you full of endorphins and give you that moment to switch off and sweat.
What I love about Carly is that she is an open book. She is honest and open on her social channels and tries to inspire women to love themselves rather than punish themselves. She managed to stay active throughout her pregnancy, despite some occasional negative comments which we discuss in this episode, and she aims to be responsible in the content and messaging she shares.
In this episode we discuss what it takes to be a responsible influencer, how exercising during pregnancy is about social interaction as much as physical fitness and how to develop a thick skin when receiving criticism about your life choices.
I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do please do leave us a review on itunes or soundcloud so other strong women can find, and benefit from this podcast.

Todays guest is Lisa Smosarski, the editor-in-chief of the award-winning women’s weekly Stylist Magazine (https://www.stylist.co.uk).
Launched in September 2009, Stylist is the first freemium magazine for women. As editor she has seen Stylist win more than 50 industry awards, and now oversees all of Stylists platforms, including digital and video.
Previously Lisa had been editor of more!, Bliss and Smash Hits. She has had an incredible career in media and is so inspirational, with quite possibly the coolest job.
She has been with Stylist since the beginning and her passion shines through. I was so very lucky to manage to sneak some time from her and, as a huge fan of Stylist magazine, I was completely in awe of their headquarters. What I love about Stylist is that they manage to hold their feminist values true whilst feeling very relatable and current.

This week’s guest is Nicole Clewer, founder of premium activewear brand Dot Dash Activewear.
Nicole started the brand a year ago after deciding to ditch previous ambassador roles and become an ambassador of her own brand. Looking around, Nicole realised that women today often do the school run, head into the office, hit yoga AND find time to meet the girls for a coffee all in one day.
With this in mind she wanted to create a brand that incorporates all of these needs and still looks and feels amazing, which is why she started Dot Dash Activewear.
Prior to this Nicole worked as a Personal Trainer for almost ten years and also competed as a GB Powerlifter, breaking a squat British record in 2013.
It’s safe to say Nicole likes a challenge, not only did she launch Dot Dash Activewear this year, she also had her baby boy Jago.
What I love about Nicole is that she is open and honest about what it takes to juggle a baby, a new business and a social life, but also 100% recommends it and shows that your entrepreneurial dreams don’t have to stop once you have children, in fact they can be the very motivation you needed.
I hope you enjoy the podcast and please do share with friends and family you think may benefit from its message.

Todays guest is Sylvia Mac a child burn survivor, campaigner & the Founder of Love Disfigure.
At the age of 3 Sylvia fell into boiling water through an accident at home. Sylvia almost lost her life twice but miraculously survived being left with 3rd & 4th degree burns to her body. Now aged 50, two years ago she revealed a video on Facebook to share her life with a hidden disability & disfigurement and received hundreds of positive comments.
Spurred on by this she created Love Disfigure to help raise awareness and show support for those with differences. She continues to campaign and was very successful in calling out brands to become inclusive and diverse by sharing her own campaign on ITV’s This Morning (which you can watch here: https://bit.ly/2E1gAMu) & BBC Woman’s Hour (which you can read/listen to here: https://bbc.in/2DZ5iZ6).
Sylvia spent so many years hating her body, until that lightbulb moment where things changed, and she saw herself as a survivor rather than a victim. I love that she now uses her experiences to empower others to embrace their differences and to influence change in the media.
I hope you enjoy the podcast and please do share with someone you think could benefit from Sylvia’s message. As always please do leave us a review if you enjoy the podcast to help others find this podcast too.

Todays guest is Marie Louise, or as you may know her The Modern Midwife, an internationally practicing senior midwife.
By 20 Marie Louise had completed a midwifery degree qualifying as one of the youngest midwives in the U.K. Since then Marie Louise has made it her mission to help women have better births and smoother postnatal periods.
Alongside her role as a midwife her recent work involves delivering antenatal education for Mothercare, volunteering for Child Org as a communications partner, blogging for the Huffington post, becoming an in-house midwife for Emma Buntons company Kit & Kin, becoming a social media influencer and writing clinical guidelines on Neonatal Skincare. She also has her own Podcast (which you can listen to here: https://apple.co/2ASYWYA) where she discusses a range of topics with mothers and healthcare professionals.
She admits her whole world and life revolves around improving maternal and newborn health because babies of today shape the world of tomorrow. What I love about Marie Louise is that she is helping to bring midwives knowledge to the masses which is a luxury we haven’t always had. For many labour was something to fear and know little about whereas Marie Louise is helping to spread her knowledge in a way that is digestible to those who don’t work in healthcare.
Her passion for midwifery really comes through on this podcast and I hope you all find it useful and inspiring. If you know a mother-to-be or future midwife please do pass this on and leave us a review if you enjoyed it.

Today’s guest is Sally Nugent, sports reporter and journalist for BBC breakfast.
Sally has been working for the BBC for 15 years, starting as a broadcast journalist at her local radio station - BBC Radio Merseyside, before moving on to report on and read the sports news on BBC North West Tonight.
In 2003 she became a sports reporter for BBC News, appearing on national bulletins, before becoming a sports news presenter on the BBC News Channel (known at the time as BBC News 24).
Since April 2012, she has presented sports bulletins alongside Mike Bushell on Breakfast, when the programme moved to its new home at Media City in Salford.
Sallys current role with the BBC is the product of many years of hard work in what is typically a man’s world – sport. What I love about Sally is that she has managed to break down barriers and carve out an incredible career at a time when there were very few women attending sports press conferences and match coverage.
Sally grew up in a family where you talked about sport no matter what your gender and there was never any doubt in her mind that women could have an opinion on sport.
She is so down to earth, so welcoming and a huge inspiration. I hope you enjoy the podcast and please do let us know what you think by leaving us a review on iTunes or SoundCloud, or by getting in touch on social media.

Todays guest is Laura Hoggins (or you may know her as Biceps). Laura is a fully trained Fitness Coach and Personal Trainer who runs her own concept class, LIFTED, at the Ministry of Sound Fitness.
Born and raised in Surrey, Laura developed her passion for lifting after discovering a CrossFit box in Hammersmith over three years ago. Inspired by the community of individuals whose priority was athletics and not their aesthetic, Laura quit her office job and moved into fitness full time.
Her career started under the tutelage of Ben Gotting at The Foundry, London and she now teaches a mix of modified strongman, strength and conditioning circuits across the city at London’s top fitness venues.
Laura has worked with British Women’s Lifting, Women in Sport and This Girl Can to spread a campaign that she supports that ’strong is not a size’.
What I love about Laura is that she has bridged the gap between what women have previously thought about weight lifting, and the reality. I feel she is making it safer, more accessible and less intimidating.
I hope you enjoy the podcast!

Todays guest is Becky Young, founder of the Anti-Diet Riot Club.
The Anti-Diet Riot Club hosts events and meet-ups, in London and the UK, that connect people struggling with diet-cycling, poor body image, and disordered eating.
Their aim is to spread the message of body acceptance, radical self-love and fat positivity. Becky is very open about her personal experiences of body acceptance and I think this really helps her to relate to the community she has built.
Body positivity has had somewhat of a boom recently but its roots can get easily confused or diluted. In this podcast we discuss what and who body positivity is really for and how we can all support the movement, no matter our size.
Becky is absolutely amazing, I instantly loved her and she is passionate without being aggressive. She is changing peoples perspectives using positivity, not negativity.
I really hope you enjoy the podcast and please do share it with loved ones you feel may need to hear her message. Lets spread the love.

A former finalist on The Great British Bake Off, she is also an occasional TV presenter, food writer, contributor to radio, print and online media on food, psychology and the interaction of the two.
What I love about Kimberley is she has taken her two passions (food and psychology) and created a successful and fulfilling career from both.
In this podcast we discuss her impressive career path, the role of social media in mental health, and the lack of inclusion and diversity in the wellness industry.
I hope you enjoy it and please do leave us a review if you get chance. If any of the topics in this podcast resonate with you, or someone you know please do share the podcast on your social channels to help us spread the amazing positive advice this strong woman shares.

After studying History and Politics at Oxford University Pip subsequently worked in Asia for five years as an anchor and reporter in Hong Kong and Malaysia. She reported on the Malaysian election and produced political and travel multimedia stories for The Telegraph, BBC, CNN and South China Morning Post, amongst others.
In 2013, Pip cycled home from Malaysia to London, as you do, covering 10,000 miles and 26 countries in a year on her bike. In 2016 Pips adventures took her on a 3,000 mile cycle, boat and plane journey exploring Brazil and Peru to raise awareness of the environmental issues in the region.
In February this year Pip took on a world first – paddling the entire length of The Essequibo, South America's third largest river, from source to sea alongside fellow ‘Strong Women’ podcast guest Laura Bingham (you can listen to Laura's episode here: https://bit.ly/2niX7fD).
There is absolutely no stopping Pip and I love how passionate she is about sharing stories from people all over the globe. She has challenged herself time and time again and that fascinates me.

Todays guest is Holly Hill, a GB rower who I met during the Oxford Cambridge boat race this year.
Holly is 24, from Gloucestershire and started rowing in September 2013 with the GB Start Scheme in Cambridge where she was studying for a degree in Human, Social and Political Sciences.
In 2015 Holly rowed in the inaugural Women’s Boat Race alongside the men on the Tideway, the first time the women’s team had been able to do so, and again in 2017 where Cambridge won, and set the women’s course record.
She has since won various medals competing for her country and is currently training full-time with the GB Rowing Team in Caversham. Furthermore, she has been selected in the Women’s GB Eight for this season.
I was lucky enough to record this podcast at the National Rowing Training Centre which you’ll hear when we are interrupted half way through by a member of the team. Holly showed me around and I was so impressed with the facilities our athletes have been given.
In this podcast we discuss what it’s like to be a GB athlete and how Holly personally entered the professional rowing scene. I found Holly beyond inspiring. When she talks about rowing her face completely lights up and her passion for it is infectious.
This podcast is for you if you want to know more about the life of a professional athlete, you’re interested in joining a team sport or you want to know more about the mindset needed to win.
I loved interviewing her and if you enjoy the podcast please do share it with your friends and family on your social channels or leave us a review. This will help The Strong Women Podcast to grow.

Todays guest is Bella Younger, a comedian, journalist, script writer, social media influencer and brand consultant who you'll probably know best as Deliciously Stella (http://www.bellayounger.com).
Deliciously Stella is the satirical instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/deliciouslystella/) that began as a parody of the 'eat clean and 'fitspo' movements we all have a love/hate relationship with.
She has written a book (which you can buy here: https://amzn.to/2LnbMkl), hosts a podcast that has been downloaded over 100,000 times (listen here: https://bit.ly/2uDKzTF) and has performed two sold out live shows at the Edinburgh Festival.
She has been a speaker and panelist at numerous events including Stylist Live and her favourite topics include, building an online brand, self-acceptance, and navigating internet fame.
I first started following Bella over a year ago and I think she came at a time when people were really starting to get fed up of the smug, occasionally damaging picture of health Instagram stars seemed to be endorsing – Kim Kardashian I’m looking at you. She taught us to laugh at ourselves and also see how ridiculous certain claims or aspirations really were.
Her rapid rise to fame did not come without it’s challenges, particularly for Bella’s mental health and in this podcast she talks candidly about her struggles.
This is a great podcast for anyone looking to work as an influencer, or within the wellness industry in general, as she gives some great advice on how not to burnout.
I love Bella and I particularly love how she is a completely open book. If it will help other women there is nothing she won’t say, do or admit. Today’s guest is Gemma Hillier-Moses.
Gemma is the founder of Move Charity (https://www.movecharity.org) and is also a competitive runner, having ran for her country numerous times.
Move Charity devotes its time and energy to educating young people living with cancer on the importance of moving and keeping as fit as possible during and after cancer treatment. After studying sports science at Loughborough University Gemma went on to work with Nike. At the age of 24 Gemma begun to notice a lump on her neck which, after much misdiagnosis, was diagnosed as Stage 3 Berketts Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. After aggressive treatment, and in between rounds of chemo, Gemma ran the Great North Run and this was the start of her mission to spread the word of the importance of movement and strength in other cancer sufferers.
Move Charity has grown extraordinarily, and the charity now runs events and workshops, educates health professionals on the psychological effects of treatment and provides online support for children facing cancer.
I first met Gemma at Fit as a Fiddle (http://www.fitasafiddlefestival.co.uk), a fitness festival raising money for Move and I was blown away by her passion and honesty.
If everything that happens has a reason then Gemma’s experiences have created a beautiful soul on a mission to help others.

Today’s guest is Georgie Akin-Smith.
In 2017 Georgie decided to take on 12 different physical challenges in 12 months. She wanted to expand her horizons, get out of her comfort zone and see what she could achieve both mentally and physically. A cross country ski marathon, cycling to Paris in 24 hours and a circumnavigation of Mallorca in a day were some of the challenges she took on.
Georgie had little or no experience when taking on some of these challenges and instead opted for the ‘sign up now, work out how to do it later''’ approach. She learnt an incredible amount throughout the year, namely that we can all do way more than we think we can. You just have to have the courage to throw yourself into it.
I think what we can all take from Georgie’s challenges is that sometimes we just have to put our names down. Whether that’s for a promotion at work, a physical challenge, course or qualification. Just get your name down and throw yourself into it.
I love that Georgie’s own fitness passions adapted over the year and she learnt so much about herself. Some of her hardest challenges are now her favourite. I hope you enjoy the podcast and let me know if it inspires you to sign up for any challenges of your own.
If you enjoy the podcast I’d love it if you could leave a review as this helps other women find the podcast.

Today’s guest is Laura Bingham - British explorer, adventurer and all-round inspirational woman.
Leaving home at 18, Laura decided she wanted to travel the world and search for a life like no other. After spending some time in Mexico, teaching English and working on a jaguar conservation programme, Laura made the bold decision to attempt to sail across the Atlantic ocean. It took 2 months and the experience inspired Laura to challenge herself, and others, again. In 2016 Laura cycled 7000km across south America with NO money to get an idea of life without financial or social stability.
Her most recent project blew my mind, and I was obsessed with following her progress. As expedition leader Laura, and her two amazing team mates Ness Knight and Pip Stewart, trekked to find the source of the Essequibo river in Guyana before paddling down the length of the river – 1000km – making them not only the first female team to run the Essequibo, but the first people ever to navigate the river.
Interviewing Laura was a huge career highlight for me as she is so incredibly determined and motivated. It’s also important to note that she completed her most recent project 8 months after having her adorable son Ranulph, proving that your life and career do not have to end because you become a mother.
Laura’s husband is fellow explorer Ed Stafford and they intend on sharing parenting to allow them to continue their incredible careers. I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’d love to hear your feedback.

As dieticians Helen and Rosie are passionate about helping people to understand the difference between evidence-based nutritional advice and anecdotal advice given by unqualified sources.
The Rooted Project run incredible events and an online book club, and if you don’t follow them on Instagram I would highly recommend it as their posts are responsible and educational without being too confusing.
In this podcast we discuss some of the common myths around nutrition including who to trust, how to sift through the bullshit and how nutrition isn’t always black or white.

Todays guest is Patience Kakitie.
Aside from being one of the most fun instructors I know Patience is seriously inspiring. Patience is a Personal Trainer and Karate coach and I first met her when my husband and I moved out of London and I found myself away from my favourite fitness classes. Patience has the most incredible energy and her spinning classes are as tough as they are hilarious and inspiring.
When her children were young Patience decided she wanted to take up Karate and didn’t she give it her all – she has since competed at a national, European and world level (as have her children).
In this podcast Patience talks me through how starting a sport later in life doesn’t need to hold you back and how a lot of her success has been down to her mindset. Patience is so warm and makes me laugh so hard, I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I obviously did.

Today’s guest is Jenny Rosborough, a passionate and inspiring registered nutritionist specialising in public health.
Jenny has worked for organisations focussing on childhood obesity and sugar and has campaigned for changes to legislation around food labelling and the sugar tax. Her most recent role is as Head of Nutrition at Jamie Oliver where she oversees the nutritional aspects of his recipes, restaurants and his campaigns.
Jenny has worked with us on The Model Method Online and she really is an advocate of a balanced approach to nutrition rather than seeing certain foods as the enemy.
In this episode we discuss how organisations are working to make public diet more nutritious and how those with the biggest voices in nutrition aren’t always the most qualified. I hope you enjoy the podcast and excuse the occasional barks of her dog in the background.

Today’s guest is Anya Hayes. Anya is a Pilates instructor, author, and public speaker specialising in pregnancy and post-natal care.
With 4 books under her belt she is a woman on a mission to help other women understand their bodies and how pregnancy affects us. Her career path is so interesting and I love how she has turned some really quite dark times into happiness, and built a career around something she is so utterly passionate about.
Anya gives some great advice for expectant mothers, new mothers and those who had babies years ago, but a lot of this advice is applicable to all women. We need to be more open about discussing pelvic floor issues, and a lot of this begins with simply being able to say the word vagina without squirming, and we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help when we think we need it.
Hopefully this podcast will help you be the expert on you! Enjoy.

Todays guest is Vanessa Ford, a physiotherapist, Pilates instructor, PT and one of my amazing instructors at PilatesPT (https://www.pilatespt.co.uk).
Vanessa has been a physio for many years and her love of Pilates as a method of rehabilitation brought her to my door. Vanessa works as an occupational physiotherapist meaning she is hired by a company to look after their staffs physical wellbeing.
Her experience with those who suffer with chronic back pain led her to create her online physiotherapy offering The Back Plan (http://bit.ly/2FjjcSV) with her business partner and fellow Physiotherapist Jenny Chancellor.
Vanessa has also worked with me for 5 years and she is an absolute fountain of knowledge. I turn to her for advice whenever I see a client presenting injuries or complaints and she has fixed so many of our clients through her positive and proactive approach to physiotherapy and pilates.

Today’s guest is Karen O’Donoghue one of the happiest, most positive women I know and the only one I know that talks about poo in every conversation with such enthusiasm.
Karen is the Founder of The Happy Tummy Company (https://www.thehappytummyco.com) and as a sufferer of IBS for so many years her aim is to get everyone pooing and improving their gut health.
The Happy Tummy Company is best known for it’s Fermented Wholegrain Chia Teff Loaf which is made by hand, made to order and made to help you poop.
She’s like a woman possessed and it is her contagious enthusiasm that makes everyone love her. One of the business skills I am trying to work on at the moment is backing myself. A year ago I talked at an event all about running a business and when discussing this skill I literally put a slide of Karens gorgeous face up. You cannot help but 100% buy into Karens brand and mission and she is such an inspiration. I hope you enjoy the podcast!

Today’s guest is Pippa Murray.
Pippa is the founder of Pip & Nut, an all-natural nut butter brand which was born from Pips love of running, but dislike of the nut butter offerings at the time – many of which contained palm oil and sugar. Pip & Nut started in 2015 and Pip has such interesting stories about the journey the business has taken including her living in a shed to how she secured £120k worth of investment in 9 days.
Pip is so down to earth and relaxed when talking about Pip & Nut despite the fact that with very little initial experience she has created a company that last year saw a turnover of £5m.
This podcast will be great for those who have an idea for a product or service but are unsure of how to turn it into a viable business. Pips idea was born whilst she worked at The Science Museum in a totally different industry however with hard work, passion and imagination she has built one of the coolest brands in the health food market.
I hope you enjoy the podcast and pick up some great tips along the way and I would love it if you could leave me a review on iTunes. It literally takes seconds and will help others find the podcast too.

Mel dedicates her time to helping women worldwide ditch the dieting for good, make peace with food and love their healthy bodies, coaching women via her online Academy, and luxury Goddess Retreats in Bali (where Mel lives) and Thailand.
I’ve had my eye on Mel for a while for the podcast as she is all about loving your body. She incorporates what feels like a very spiritual approach to happiness and self care and a lot of what Mel advises in this podcast is really positive, whilst she speaks from personal experience with such honesty.
I hope you really enjoy this podcast and it helps you build a positive relationship with your body.

Today’s guest is straight-talking, bullshit-finding, research based, fact giving Laura Thomas.
Laura is the real deal when it comes to nutritionists. Laura studied Health sciences at the University of Aberdeen, took her PhD in nutritional sciences at Texas A & M university and went on to be a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University for 2 years before the cold ass weather brought her back to the UK (this also explains her Scottish American hybrid accent.
Laura is fiercely passionate about evidence based nutrition information and spends a lot of her time on social media trying to balance out the copious amounts of pseudoscience rubbish on there. Laura has a non-diet approach and is a huge advocate of intuitive eating. She runs her own clinic in East London and also acts as an advisor for various TV and print material such as this years Mind over Marathon series on BBC 1.
I first met Laura when I appeared on her podcast Don’t Salt My Game (http://bit.ly/2elgQ7Q), which if you enjoy my podcast you’ll love.
I love that Laura is not afraid to speak out against large corporations if she feels they are at risk of damaging women’s relationships with food. She is feisty, clever and funny all in one and is doing wonders for the body confidence of so many. You’re going to love her!

Today’s guest is pre and post-natal fitness expert Caroline Bragg.
Caroline is a personal trainer and studio instructor and is hugely passionate about the wellness journey from pregnancy to postnatal. Caroline also teaches on postnatal retreats for families in France for ‘And Breathe’ retreats (read about 'And Breathe' here: http://bit.ly/2ltw7Mr) and teaches qualifications in pre and post natal fitness.
Recently Caroline and I noticed a few errors circulating social media with regards to what new mums should be doing fitness wise and Caroline suggested recording a podcast on this very topic. Fitness during pregnancy can be a real minefield as a quick Google search can throw up all kinds of inaccuracies.
With years of experience between us in teaching pre and post-natal clients we discuss exactly what the recommendations are for during and after pregnancy. If you haven’t read my recent blog on Diastasis Recti (read it here: http://bit.ly/2iO5K2P) I would do so as it will really help you to understand why certain activities are not advised so close to labour.
Staying active during your pregnancy is beneficial for your mental and physical health, plus it’s thought to make for an easier labour, and I really hope this helps those who want to stay active during their pregnancies do so. Please remember that every pregnancy is different and to work closely with your doctor to check that they too are happy with your fitness plans. I hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast!

Today’s guest is a truly amazing woman, Sabrina Greenberg.
Sabrina has suffered with anxiety for the last 10 years and, in this episode, discusses with such honesty and clarity how anxiety feels, how she believes it began and also how she works to address it in her everyday life.
Over the last couple of years Sabrina has found that exercise has really helped her re-connect with a body that she felt she had no control over and she has created an incredible blog Anxiously Active (https://www.anxiouslyactive.com) to document her journey. She was recently part of a series with the Evening Standard called Mental Health in the metropolis and the video interview for this is really worth watching (watch it here: http://bit.ly/2rLyucV.
I loved recording this podcast, especially as I have suffered with anxiety in the past, and I am so glad women like Sabrina are talking about mental health to free others from the shame and embarrassment that many others may feel around this topic. If you are enjoying these podcasts please do leave me a review as I would love to know what you think.

Today’s guest is Dr Morgaine Gaye, a food futurologist, senior lecturer, researcher and all-round food trend expert.
Don’t worry if you’ve never heard the term food futureologist before – you’re about to learn all about it. I first met Morgaine through my amazing friend Megan who studied under her whilst at Nottingham Trent university.
I remember Meg telling me I would LOVE Morgaine and I did. Morgaine’s enthusiasm when it comes to food, food trends and food marketing is infectious and she is an absolute joy to spend time with.
I love Morgaine’s passion for her job and that she openly admits it doesn’t always feel like a job to her – it’s just her life. We often feel we should have this perfect work/life balance but Morgaine shows how this needn’t always be the case.
I hope you really enjoy this podcast and come away with a new understanding of how other people are already deciding what we will be eating in 5 – 10 years and how biased much of the ‘clean eating research’ can be.

This weeks guest is Emma Mills - a writer and meditation teacher with a passion for sharing ideas for living well, inspired by the arts, psychology and meditation. Starting her career working with the charity Mind she is now the author of the beautiful book ‘Inhale Exhale Repeat’. She is also the mindfulness expert for Neom and speaks at various events.
I first met Emma on a photo shoot with Red magazine and one of the things I noticed about her was how drawn to her we all were. We seemed to all take it in turns to sit with her and pick her brains about why she seemed so calm and relaxed in what should have been quite a nerve-wracking situation. It felt like simply being in her presence calmed you down. Since then Emma has been my go-to meditation expert and her book ‘Inhale Exhale Repeat’ has been incredibly helpful on nights when I can’t sleep.

Shahroo is making huge waves in the behaviour-change sector and has just signed an incredible 2 book deal with Pan Macmillan. Her emphasis is on treating your body with positivity and patience.

Having suffered with anxiety in the past I remember reading Chloe’s book ‘The Anxiety Solution’ and feeling as though I was reading all about myself. Chloe has a way of talking about anxiety in such an open and honest way and her book is full of easy tips and advice on reducing your levels of anxiety.

This week my guest is the amazing Lauren Armes. Lauren is an entrepreneur, business mentor and success coach. She is also the owner of Welltodo which is a global wellness platform that hosts incredible events, helps place people in their dream wellness careers and offers consultancy to forward-thinking health and fitness brands around the world. Welltodo is my go-to for the latest news in my industry and through my love of it I found an incredible role model in Lauren. Lauren has been my business coach for almost a year now and I really do have her to thank for a lot of my recent business decisions.
What I love most about Lauren is how she empowers women to build successful businesses. She has taught me to back myself and make decisions based on the life I would like to lead rather than the life I have been backed into because of my emotional connection to my business. Today’s guest is Muireann Carey-Campbell who some of you may know as Bangs.
Bangs is the Head Instructor at Boom Cycle spin studio in London where her classes are frequently sold out and she throws out positive messaging like it’s going out of fashion. She started her incredible blog, Bangs and a Bun, back in 2007 and writes for numerous publications, namely her monthly columns in Elle magazine. She’s also a confident and motivating public speaker.
What I love about Bangs is that she really understands the responsibility she has as a voice in the fitness industry and uses it to spread realistic, and often personal, advice. There are so many mixed messages in the fitness industry now but Bangs is a great reminder of how powerful exercise is at improving our moods, and that exercise is for health, not aesthetics.

This week, for the first ever Strong Not Skinny Podcast, my guest is the wonderful Melissa Hemsley. Melissa is one of the most positive, happy and motivating women I have had the pleasure of training. She is one half of the Hemsley sisters who are not only best selling authors but have their own café at Selfridges in London.
The Hemsleys have 2 books to their name: The Art of Eating Well, and Good + Simple and Melissa has her own book coming out next year. You may have also seen them on Eating Well with Hemsley and Hemsley on channel 4.
Melissa first came to my studio after losing her motivation to exercise after sadly losing her father. What I love about Melissa is the way that she uses food as a way of bringing people together, whether that be bringing me homemade lunches to her sessions, hosting networking afternoon-teas at her café or her support for Cook For Syria that sees chefs around the world coming together to raise money for an incredible cause.
Melissa has carved out an impressive career all whilst helping build other women up and is a true inspiration to me – she couldn’t help others more! I really hope you enjoy this first ever episode of the podcast.
