Once upon a time, there was a little rain cloud. And it was a very kind little rain cloud because it's big mommy and daddy, the fluffy white clouds and taught it that if it was ever going to rain, it should at least rain on some place that needs the water. Like a farmer's field after it had been sewed or hot swings in a playground so that the kids don't burn their legs when they get on.
But this rain cloud all the way up in the sky, floating around all by himself was feeling rather lonely. Now when I say little, as in little rain cloud, I mean, it was about as big as a kitchen table, or a piano, or maybe the size of two big TVs you might find in your living room, or maybe the size of your sofa. So it was a little bit big, but it was pretty small for a cloud. And when it was way, high in the sky, you could barely see it. So nobody took much notice of it.
The weather forecasts on the telly never picked it up however it was one of those clouds that on a hot sunny day with a clear blue sky would make you stand there, point and stare and say “Look at that little cloud in the sky”. And it made the blue sky look even more blue.
The little rain cloud liked that. He liked to be noticed. It didn't happen very often.
This little rain cloud was also a bit mischievous or cheeky or some might say even naughty. I think it was because he's mommy and daddy weren't around anymore so he liked to play around and because nobody could really see him he was able to get away with a lot of things.
Some of the things he did they weren’t really bad, because, let’s face it - how much damage could a little white cloud the size of your sofa actually do?
Well, one thing it liked to do was to rain in playgrounds and make just a little wet-patch-circle just before the children came out to play. They would tumble into the yard laughing and then stop and scratch their heads and then ask their teacher. Has it been raining, sir? Why is it we over here? What's happened?
Sometimes, he would like to rain on the car of the teacher that shouted at the child at school. The rain cloud was especially happy if it was a warm summer's day and the teacher had left the car windows open. Meaning the little cloud could get the car all wet.
And so a little rain cloud was floating around, raining here and raining there and feeling a bit sad. You see his brothers and his sisters and his mommy daddy had been blown away in a great big storm a long time ago.
The rain cloud wanted to find his mommy and daddy and kept searching and searching. But he couldn't find them.
One day, or, I should say one night, the little raincloud was floating around, and a big grey thunderstorm cloud came along and barged him right out of the way. The little rain cloud was blown aside and settled near the side of a mountaintop and landed just behind the tip of this mountain as he watched this wide and deep, angry and grey storm crowd growing and growing bigger and bigger and bigger. And then as he peeked past the tip of the mountain again the little rain cloud saw sparks of lightening flying out of the cloud and the bellowing thunder ringing all around. The thunder was deafening and the rain cloud was scared. Scared but very, very impressed. He watched the big storm blowing gusts of wind, moving the trees, bumping cars and even swaying buildings. “Mmm I'd like to be a storm cloud! I would like to be able to make lightning and thunder and blow a few cars around” thought Alto. “But I'm just a little rain cloud, how could I possibly do that?
And as the storm passed over. -And as he watched all the damage unfold as the light came from the sunpopped up from the horizon, the little rain cloud had second thoughts: “Do these big storm clouds do anything else apart from all this damage?” Look at those broken trees and look at that farmer. He is crying because all of his crops have been blown down.
“That's not very nice.
He had seen that big storm cloud, rained so much rain that it had made a new river flowing through this little village. So he knew, at least there was lots of water coming out of the storm cloud.
As the storm continued to chug by the little rain cloud tagged along and followed behind - just far enough, mind, that nobody would notice him, but close enough that he could hear and feel everything! The storm rumbled and grumbled and growled and kept marching along - Rolling over the ocean, picking up the waves, tossing the boats and the ships here and there like little ducks in your bathtub. Alto saw how a little boy and a white haired captain struggled to steer their mysterious ship towards a whale in calmer waters.
And as time went on the little rain cloud grew more and more impressed. He knew he shouldn't but it was hard not to admire something so powerful and impressive. And it wasn't long before Alto wanted to become a storm cloud himself..
Funnily enough, his wish came true when he got a little bit too close to the storm cloud on a very wet and windy day. Alto was tagging a bit too close behind his hero and as the behemoth slowed down to enjoy the sight of boats in a harbor crashing around like rice grains being poured into a sinkbowl, whoosh, Alto - he was sucked up into the tail of this storm cloud and couldn't get out. He was like a little fly stuck on a grand spider’s web. Or, you know, when you get your clothes caught on a wild bush.
He thought, “now I am part of a storm cloud. What am I going to do?
And he huffed and puffed, and with all his might he pulled himself and blew himself and pushed himself off the giant storm cloud. And now he was bigger than before about the size of a kitchen whereas before he was only the size of a kitchen table. Wow. He thought might try this again. And he did - he floated over, floated over back to the storm cloud and touched its tail again. got sucked in right away but as soon as he did, he huffed and puffed and he pushed and pulled and he snapped away from the tail of the storm. And again, he was bigger and stronger than before. He was about the size of a house now.
“Wow”, he said, feeling stronger. He could feel the power in the water and sensed the possibilities within his grasp -
“Anything.” “I could do anything I want!”
He tried going into the beast again. And again and again and again, in and out he went until after a while, Alto, this, once little and very kind raincloud stappod to look around. And to his surprise the huge stormcloud was nowhere to be seen.
But infront of him was a little rainclou. And he looked at himself. And he was the storm cloud. Now he taught, what games can we play? And he rumbled and he grumbled, and he crawled along, and he came to the shore. And he did some damage with his lightning bolts on his belly and from his nose He passed over this little town and didn't look back and he went to the next town and the next village and he passed over and growling and rumbling and lightning until there was nothing left a little island and he sat there as the sun was shining on his back and he was blocking out, shading the island, listening to the people crying, and the farmers roar roaring with anger. And he realised that he made a bad decision. He made a mistake and used his power for the wrong purpose. In a second Alto big storm cloud turned white, and became the cloud. The little rain cloud always wanted to be. And so rain clouds come fixed the things that they've done. They can always start from that day and make things better, or help other places. And so that's what this little rain planted. he floated around. Village by village, town by town, city by city, country, my country, continent by content and rained on all the places that needed the water, like farmer's fields are dry lakes and rivers and reservoirs, he rained on hot slides and swingsto cool little boys and girls legs, arms. And he also kept his cheeky streak and rained on little bad boys and girls or teachers just a little bit and it was very famous in all the forecast news forecasters, weather forecasters would see him on the telly and he would make shapes so that when the forecast as was saying, He is coming to you, they will know exactly who he was. And then after he found his mommy and daddy and his brothers and sisters, and they all lived happily ever after. In the sky floating about rainy people needed it and I'm still a little boy on my shoulder. sleep. Good night. Sweet dreams. The End

It was a real pleasure reading this story and improvising it into 3rd person.
Empathetic is a big word! Teaching kids to be empathetic and understanding empathy can be a challenge.
Help the kids in your life understand empathy and build positive relationships. Being empathetic is an important skill to balance. If someone is overly empathetic, people and situations can take advantage and deplete their energy leaving them feeling exhausted.
It is important for kids to understand that when showing empathy it is also so important to set boundaries and ensure they are balanced and healthy first so they can truly help others.

We are all human. We all have our own stories of struggle and empowerment. Having empathy is not about completely understanding what another has been through but having the ability to step back and support each other in our journey through life.
Empathy is an important skill that is not clearly taught in schools. As a teacher I notice students who lack empathy in many situations. They need to be clearly taught how to take a breath and support their fellow classmates in a kind, caring and compassionate way.
My hope for this book is that it helps children build empathy and self-empowerment.

What a great story - helping Your Child Cope with Loss.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who was very, very shy. He didn’t have any brothers or sisters so he lived all alone with his mommy and daddy.
But his mommy and daddy were always working. His daddy worked in a factory miles and miles and miles away from home, meaning that Billy only saw him on the weekends. Mom worked in a restaurant, and she came back really late each night. So the boy, when he left school each day, had to get on the school bus and sit on his seat by the window near the back, get off the school bus by himself, walk all the way up the stairs to his house, open the door, turn on the oven and cook the food that his mom had prepared, eat it by himself, do his homework by himself, brush his teeth, wash his face, and go to bed all by himself. His mom would come home about 10 o'clock at night and he was always still awake, waiting for her. Whenever he heard his mom close the door as she came in from work, he would close his eyes and wait. You see, every time mom came back home she always, without fail, went to Billy’s bedroom first, just to check he was sleeping. And every night she would see his eyes were closed and every single night she would give him a kiss on his forehead. Billy always tried to stay awake but as soon as his mom kissed his head, he fell fast asleep.
In the mornings when he got up, his mom would have breakfast with him and tell him what food she'd prepared the night before so he would know what he would be having for dinner alone that night. And then he would go to school.
On the weekends Billy’s dad would usually get home on a Friday night around ten or eleven at night. And so that was the night that Billy could stay up a little bit later than usual and also because there was no school on Saturdays he could get to see his dad for bit, but his dad was always tired and didn’t play much with his only child.
You see, this boy, Billy, did not have a very nice life. All he did was come home every day by himself: on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday he would go home all by himself and look after himself until he fell asleep when his mom kissed his forehead. He didn't have any friends to play with, and he could never go outside because his mom said not to play outside. Sometimes he could go out on the weekend but his dad would come home on the weekend, and his dad would usually sleep on the sofa all the time, because he was so tired from working so hard. This meant Billy usually had to help his mom to wash and clean and do all the housework so the boy felt very, very fed up.
Well, one day, I think it was a Tuesday afternoon, the boy was feeling particularly fed up and he got off the school bus and went upstairs to his house. He turned on the oven to heat up his dinner and then he heard a ‘ding dong’ at the door.
“Oh, who's that? Mom didn’t tell me anyone would be visiting!”, he thought.
So he went and opened the door and there at the bottom of the step was a little canvas box and nobody to be seen.
He looked around again but he couldn't see anybody.
“That’s strange”, thought Billy. “Postmen don’t even come at this time of day”.
So, after making sure the coast was clear he took the little box quickly under his arm, closed the door and went and put it on a kitchen table. He turned off the oven and let his food cool down a bit. And as his food was cooling, he sat down and opened up the little box. He unraveled the delicate paper wrapped present to find just a little note. And the little note said,
‘Follow the blue whale’
“mmm, is this for me?”, he thought. “Follow the blue whale, what does that mean?”
Well, he couldn't really think of what the note meant and then he started to get hungry and remembered that his food was getting cold in the cooling oven so he put the card on top of his piano and went and ate his dinner. As he was washing his dishes, he thought about the little note:
“blue whale, blue whale? Follow the blue whale, what does it mean?” As he was washing his face and getting ready for bed, he kept thinking about the blue whale: “a blue whale, blue whale. I have no idea what that means.”
As he was putting his pajamas on and getting ready for bed –
“blue whale, blue whale.”
He had no idea. Frustrated and tired Billy took the box and put it in the trash and then took it out again and put it under the kitchen sink, just in case. He left the card on top of the piano so that he would be able to see it in the morning and so that his mom might see it when she got home and perhaps she would be able to work out what ‘follow the blue whale’ meant.
As he closed his eyes, he thought, “What is this blue whale?” He had no idea. And then as usual, he heard his mom opening the door so he closed his eyes and waited for the kiss. He got the kiss on the head and fell fast asleep.
He forgot all about the note that told him to follow the blue whale.
The next day he got up and did the same as usual – all by himself. And the next day, and the next day and then it was the weekend and his dad came home and slept on the sofa for what seemed like two days straight.
Billy’s life went on like this for a few weeks and I think his dad took the card off the piano because nobody knew what it was for and so everyone forgot about the little note that just said ‘follow the blue whale’.
And then one strange day as Billy was going to school on the school bus, he saw a picture of a blue whale on a car driving by. When he was in the classroom learning his new words for the week there, in his school book was a blue whale at the top of the page. At break time, his friend, David was playing with a toy blue whale and then, as he was getting on the bus to go home to and empty house, in his seat where he always sat, alone, by the window near the back, was a small, handstitched blue whale. He picked it up and it whispered,
“come with me.”
Billy didn't know what to do. So he held on tight to this blue whale all the way home.
When he got off the bus, the blue whale started to pull, like a magnet, but the opposite direction. It was pulling him and so he held on tight. And as Billy was getting close to the door to his house the blue whale pulled him passed and away down the street. Billy was trying to hold on to the blue whale like someone might hold on to a dog that was running away with the leash. The blue whale kept pulling and pulling and pulling. Billy kept running and running and running. He thought his arms and legs were going to fall off. But before he knew it, he was down the street and he didn't know where was.
The blue whale kept pulling and pulling and pulling and pulled Billy all the way to the harbor, where all the boats were parked up. The blue whale pulled Billy onto a ship, a ship that didn’t seem to belong in that dock. Billy was pulled along the deck and down the steps into the belly of the boat and into a wooden cabin that smelled warm and piney. Well, it was dark in the cabin, lit only by candle light and the boy was very hungry, not scared funnily, just hungry. There was some food in the cabin: A nice sandwich and a glass of warm milk. Billy ate the sandwich and drank the milk and had no thought of what time it was, nor the cold food that was waiting for him in his fridge at home, but suddenly the note started to make some sense.
Suddenly Billy came out of his daydream to find himself struggling to balance on his own two feet. He tried to get out and ran up the steps to the deck, but when he got to the top of the ship, the ship had already set sail and there was sea and waves everywhere, all around, lit by the reflection of the clear full moon in the cloudless sky and it seemed that he was hundreds and hundreds of miles away from his home. He didn't know what to do and he started to cry.
But then the blue whale started to nudge him on the shoulder. You see, as I am sure you have guessed, this was a magic, floating blue whale and it was looking at Billy with its innocent eyes.
“What do you want now?” sobbed Billy. “How am I ever going to get home?” “What’s mom going to do when she gets home and I’m not in my bed?” Billy even thought that he may never sleep a wink again in his whole life if he doesn’t get kiss on his forehead from his mom again. The blue whale nudged his shoulder and Billy went back down the stairs, to another room this time, further down the into the belly of the ship. The blue pointed with his tail to a door and the boy open the door with his eyes still wet from the tears. There, inside the room, sitting at a grand wooden desk with maps sprawled all across held down by candle, and compasses and clocks. was a very old man with white hair under his captains hat and a white beard grown neatly to the top of his Navy coat. The smell of the captains pipe mixed with the wax, wood and Old Spice.
“You must be the captain of this mysterious ship” though Billy.
The boy sat down and the old man started to explain everything. Well, almost everything.
“Billy!” said the old man in a deep and warm voice, his face lighting up the moment Billy’s name left his lips.
“Billy! He announced again.
“welcome to my ship! I'm your grandfather.”
With that, Billy actually fell off his chair. He had never, ever, seen his grandfather. And he never even heard a single word about him, let alone the fact that he was a captain of a ship!
“Billy, I’m your daddy’s father and I am the captain of this magical ship.” Well, by the time Billy had gotten back onto his chair, and rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, he began to notice that this old man with thick white hair and a trim beard actually did start to look a bit like his daddy. Peter Baynton is an animator, director, and illustrator based in London. He is the Animation Director of the UK’s Channel 4's new 2019 Christmas film, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, adapted from Judith Kerr's classic book. He has been directing short films, music videos, and commercials for twelve years, picking up over 25 awards at film festivals around the world along the way. He has also worked as a storyboard artist on the BAFTA-winning CBeebies show Sarah & Duck, and in 2017 was the 2D Animation Director for Paddington 2. This year he decided to pursue a long-held desire to illustrate a children's book and was enchanted by Mark’s manuscript for The Fabulous Lost and Found.
From the Author Mark:-What's the story behind the book?When I was 21, I set up a legal aid clinic for refugees. Sitting in my office in Cairo, I’d meet people from Sierra Leone, Congo, Iraq, and Sudan. They’d tell me why they’d fled and I would prepare their cases. But to get to a point where they were willing to share those painful stories, we had to build a relationship of trust. I asked myself, How do I do that: form a bond, show respect, and yet break the ice with a stranger? For me, it was to talk to them in their own language. ‘Aw Di bodi? I would ask clients from Sierra Leone. They’d smile, taken aback, and reply in Krio, ‘Di Bodi fayn.’ Then I’d apologise for my language skills ‘Ah no sabi tok Krio fayn fayn.’ And we’d share a chuckle. Somehow just that simple gesture of wanting to engage, of being seen to be making an effort to make them feel at home was enough to set us off. I’ve been like that my whole life. I now speak Italian, French and German and can tell jokes or sing a little song in Tagalog, Greek, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Krio and Kupsabiny (a Ugandan language). I can’t imagine my life without it.
Today, like never before, I feel we need more of that empathy between people from different countries. This book is an engaging story that I hope kids will love in its own right. But it’s also my way of helping the youngest children, my own included, engage with a foreign language, learn to empathise with strangers, and ultimately build a love of languages. The possibility that after a few reads, kids will be able to go up to a native speaker and tell them in their own language: ‘I’ve lost my hat,’ fills me with joy. Imagine the reaction! Think of how proud the child will feel. The Girl Who Escaped From Home
Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a very, very big house. And she was the daughter of a very, very rich family. And she was the only daughter. But her mommy and daddy were very, very cruel and very, very mean. She lived in one of the biggest houses in the town. But she felt like she wanted to escape. And that's exactly what she tried to do. One night, when a mommy and daddy were asleep, he sneaked out from underneath a very heavy blankets. And she put on some warm clothes so she can go out in the night. Now, did I tell you that this story was about 200 years ago, when there was no electricity. And the girl had to find some candles, and some matches, so that she could find a way outside. Well, she found the candles, and she found the matches. And as she walked down a big long hallway, to the big round staircase, she almost dropped the matches and walk up her parents. I don't want to wake up my parents, she said, if they catch me on never get out of this big house. You see, one of the reasons why she didn't like to stay there was because the house had 20 slaves, and maids and cooks and cleaners. And the mommy and daddy were always shouting and hitting and making them do all the work. And the girl who didn't do a day's work in life. felt really sorry for these people. And she couldn't do anything about it. So she wanted to send a message and she thought she'd run away. Standing at the top of the staircase looking down, she didn't know whether to go back to a room or to run. She took a deep breath, put the candles in a pocket and tiptoe down the steps. She came to the big door which was really hard to open. And she took 20 minutes just to lift the latch. She lifted it off, open the door and stood outside in the dark pitch black nights. He was very quiet. But when she lit the match, and she put the candle on, put it in the length Lenten, she was able to see. And the light shone the path down all the way to the roads. So she walked down there quite quickly, because she didn't want to wake up a moment that when she got to the bottom of the road, there was a path going to the right and to the left. But she didn't know where she was going. So she just went this one, and she went left. And she followed the road all the way down to the forest. And there was two entrances to the forest. And she didn't know which one to take. So she went this one. And she went right. And she went right into the deep, dark forest. And she was scared. She was scared because she didn't know what was in the forest. And she heard lots of stories of wolves and bears and gruff hellos and all kinds of things. But you know what, she'd never seen a Gruffalo or a bear or a wolf. But she'd seen a mommy and daddy hitting all these cleaners and workers. So she, she knew she was definitely scared of that. But she didn't know what she was scared of. Because he hadn't seen anything in the forest. She'd never been there before. So she started to walk into the deep, dark forest. And then she started to hear noises. And the noises grew louder and louder. And these noises were of owls and birds and the growls of what seemed to be bears. Now, she started to get worried and scared. And she didn't know which way she was going. So she started to run faster and faster into the forest. And she got to the place where she thought she could see the moon through the top of the trees. And it was lights. And she stopped and her heart was racing in a blood was pumping. And she couldn't hear the noises anymore. She sat down and she was so tired because it was the middle of the night. She fell asleep. Well, the next day she woke up and she was in the middle of the nice forest and she didn't What to do. So she kept walking in the same way she was going, she walked in, she walked in, she walked in, she walked for miles. She walked for miles and miles. Sometimes she stopped. And she could pick the fruit from the trees. So she knew she was going to be alright. And she started to walk what seemed to be this long Hill. And then she got to the top of the hill, and she could see the sea. She could see the ocean. And you could see a boats going, getting ready to sail. So she ran down there. And she snuck onto the ship when nobody could see. And just as the ship was about to leave, the captain saw this little girl said, Hey, what are you doing on my ship? She said, I'm running away from my mommy and daddy. Why are you doing that? You silly girl. Because they are hitting all the cleaners and stuff? Or how, where's the moment that you live. So the captain stopped the ship. golf with this little girl took all these soldiers and men and draw drove these horses to this girl's house. They got to the house. And the captain knocked on the girl's door. And the daddy came out. And the captain was looked very angry. And he shouted at this mommy and daddy said, Hey, you stop cheating these workers like that, because your daughter almost gone to my ship and sailed away and we were going to the other side of the world and you would never see your daughter again. So what you want to do, you want to keep hitting these people and you want to live with your daughter. Well, suddenly, in one second, the daddy and mommy realise what they've been doing. And they promised the captain of the ship who was very scary looking big guy that they would never do it again. And so the captain gave that little girl a hug and said, don't worry. Go on. And there's a go around and give her daddy and mommy a big hug. And they went back into the house. And from that day on. The rich parents did not treat these cleaners badly at all. In fact, they all became part of the family and treated them really nicely. And the girl grew up to have a big house of her own and have lots and lots of cleaners and stuff. And she treated them all very, very nicely. Because that day when she ran away, she learned two things. One of them was that is silly to run away from something that you're scared of. Because you can tackle it yourself and to sometimes you need to somebody like a sailor to come and help you to tell people what's right and what's wrong, and that some people do change and that you can really live happily ever after. Wow - This was fun to record - and Adding the sound effects was really great. Peter broke all the rules. But now he was making them for himself again.
This series of 13 improvised short stories are based on Jordan B Peterson's 12 Rules for Life.
I have had his book on my shelf for 6 months and have a high level of respect for the man. This is a fun way for me to make myself read each chapter and then try and improvise it into a bedtime story - one for each rule.
This story is based on rule number 3 - Make friends with people who want the best for you. Peter tries to make a few friends while staying with his grandparents but soon finds that they are not his cup of tea. Unlike Tom, who, like Peter, stands straight with his shoulders back.
Sometimes we can't help someone if they don't want help. Sometimes we help others for the wrong reasons, not least to avoid helping ourselves to some extent. :)

As a kindergarten teacher I struggled with teaching my students the procedures of a lockdown drill. I knew they needed to react quickly and quietly, but I worried about frightening them. Being prepared is essential, but it wasn't necessary to put terrifying images into their minds for them to take the drills seriously.
I became frustrated at the lack of materials available that would protect my students from being traumatized by the implications of a lockdown drill. As a teacher, that reality was difficult enough, but it felt wrong to place that emotional burden on my students.
I decided to write my own lockdown story. It worked like a charm! My story created a sense of urgency, without creating a sense of fear.

Step by step She used her abilities to imagine into reality food, money, paper and pencils, signed letters, and eventually her parents...
I am not happy with the rushed ending of this story and there could have been more emphasis on Sarah's uncertainty on the reason for her ability - was it the chair, the bowl, the cereal box so that when she had them all boxed away ready for moving away forever she realized both that the ability was within her all along and it also brought her parents back...
I am going to think about this again - like the tent that wanted to be a school....
However - I still hope you enjoy it!

A story of a nice little family that turned into witches. Because of the candy - AGAIN!
This story is about a girl who loved sweet things a bit too much. So much in fact that she turned into a Juicy drop. Her dad had to fly her to China to have her changed back by the Chinese Gangsters who run the Juicy Drop factory there.
This is second of two back to back bedtime stories along with the Wizard one. In both stories Daddy runs out of stories and asks for help getting them back. Being live Bedtime Story, you can hear my daughters adding and commenting and having say on what turns the story takes. This is really a real bedtime story!

It was the first time that I tried to tell a story with a cliffhanger so that when my kids were sleeping that night they would be anticipating the next story. What actually happens was when they finished listening to the story they were so excited to hear the ending that they didn't sleep for a while so lesson to be learned is: If you tell bedtime stories, don't end with a cliffhanger because your children might not go to sleep!!

Find out what happened to the girl in the end, after 80 years as a ribbon in a glass box.
This story was originally told at bedtime to two princesses. Totally improvised.

This is one of four made-up stories, based on the Character Pippi, however created before reading actual chapters of the Pippi book by Astrid Lindgren. As happens on many occasions, my daughter requested a story about a character totally new to me and so after a quick overview on Wiki - I hit record and the stories took form.
For caution and respect for listeners I have checked this as containing explicit content as it has the words 'bugger' and 'bloody' used in a comedic way to convey mild annoyance.
