Happy New Year everyone! I still cannot believe we have weathered through a pandemic for nearly a year. What I have learned during the time is how to gain a better balance of my life. It will never look, feel and be perfect but being aware is just as important. Here's a little peek at what I wanted to share AND how balance will sometimes lean further in one direction than the other. But with awareness, you can feel balance even in times when the world around you is not!

So we have #Tikitok, #Instagram, #Facebook, #SnapChat, and a host of other platforms that our friends and family members have launched. We wanna be down... wanna support or feel connected. But, in my Iyanla Vanzant voice, beloved, not every platform is for you. Sometimes, we must recognize that and be at peace with it. Some platforms are for seasons... reasons and forever. But that's SOME and not ALL.
I love to support the homies but I also know that there are several ways to support the homies... on and off their platforms. We must truly recognize this because there are several of us compromising ourselves JUST to belong. You can't fit a square peg into a round hole!

Prayers going up for Tamar (Tay Tay). But I thank her for being transparent even when she didn't realize (nor did others) that she was doing so. She did everything to bring attention to the fact that she needed help.
As a black woman who has and struggles with depression (a mental condition that most don't want to say is a mental condition), I understand her struggles. As a mother I understand them even more. My kids are hands down the reason I have not quit on life, outside of my faith. But there were days that I wanted to throw in the towel... Nothing positive would come from my actions. My kids wouldn't have their mother... and my actions could have easily created issues for them, leading them down the road to depression and much more.
If you need help with depression, suicide or any other mental health conditions, get help. Don't suffer in silence. Hit me up... I am serious!
I have friends and close associates who are licensed therapists... I know people who know people.... GET HELP and know that you are loved and that someone cares.

Celebrating this year feels a bit different and difficult. With all that has transpired, it has become increasingly difficult to be BLACK in America and enjoy living. I have spent the past months talking, in depth, with my grandmothers, listening to their stories of racism, prejudice, inequality, what life was like (back) then and how they thought that we (America and the world) would have moved so much farther than where we are today. It made me think about my own progress, what I would like to see within my lifetime and even within my kids' lifetime.

Why in 2020 are blacks still divided amongst themselves? Why do we hate one another totally because of our skin tone, hair and they way we talk, walk and dress? We give the world fuel to continue to treat us they way that they do. We stand divided so they don't see us as one. When we say #BLM, they don't see this and so we are literally laughed at, dismissed and denied the right to what is our God given right; equality.

Thanks for listening in as I continue the discussion on the Evolution of Relationships. This week I speak on how the relationships between blacks and world. Why in 2020 are blacks still the "black sheep" of the world but the most admired, at the same time? Why is it that the world LOVES our culture but hates our skin? Recently, we have witnessed the deaths of black men and women at an alarming rate. Yet, the world would rather save the whales, elephants and all the starving children of the world before they do as much as spit on us if we were burning.
I talk about my own fear, as I am the mother to not 1 but 2 black boys. I talk about how as a teacher, even the textbooks have yet to evolve to tell the true and up and coming story of blacks.

This week I speak on how knowing each others medical background and DNA is JUST as important as knowing what's in each others 401 or portfolio. Knowing about each others health issues, medical challenges also helps to prepare for your future together. Because being with someone shouldn't be ONLY about money. As I mentioned in last week's episode, In Sickness and In Health, being prepared to take care of one another or being that Ride or Die is something that we should consider and think about BEFORE marriage or being so committed. Love ain't for PUNKS.
I talk about my own challenges as my husband and I welcomed our first child. Boy, I was not prepared for the DNA lessons I learned AFTER THE FACT! As well as, how we have had to face some scary moments with heart conditions and terrible car accidents that even involved me being hit by an 18 wheeler.

How does it all affect each of you when faced with a health scare or crisis, much like what we are currently dealing?
I give a brief description of how a close friend is currently facing such challenges and speak on how I try to introduce and include such discussions in talks with my sons, as I prepare them for their futures.

Listen in as I discuss relationships... not the romantic kind! Have you ever thought about how our relationships have dissolved and displaced our village? You know that thing we had as kids when grandma'em, auntie'em and whoever was on your block took care of everyone. What evolved and has kept us from returning to the village. I have learned more about myself, my sons and definitely my husband as we have had to SHUT IT DOWN because of ole Ro-Ro (Corona). But this time has also made me re-evaluate my relationships with others, outside my home like my students, old friends and even those we call family.
