Songfacts, which has been bringing you the stories behind the songs since 1999, now has a podcast. On the not-so-cleverly named Songfacts Podcast, our cheeky host Corey O'Flanagan speaks with songwriters and other music makers to learn about their own songs (which they often perform on the show) and explore the music that influenced them.On this fun and enlightening musical journey, you'll discover new songs across a range of genres and take a deep dive into some you know - how they're structured, what they mean, how they make us feel.Proud part of Pantheon - the podcast network for music lovers.
In August 2023, Metallica launched an official podcast, The Metallica Report, hosted by two longtime members of their camp: Renée Richardson and Steffan Chirazi. Renée runs the band's All Within My Hands foundation and has been interviewing and covering the band since her days as a DJ in San Francisco; Steffan is a British journalist who started covering the band for Sounds in the '80s and was later poached by Metallica to run their official magazine, So What! (yeah, Metallica isn't just a band - they're an organization).
We're thrilled to have Renée and Steffan as guests on the show to glean their insights into Metallica's music and find out what's happening on the M72 Tour, where the band play two completely different shows in each city, with film screenings and other events in between. Aaron Lee Tasjan, a terrific singer-songwriter who was a guest on the Songfacts Podcast in 2021, turned me on to Julia Cannon, another very gifted songwriter who also produces, sings and plays multiple instruments. Cannon is highly introverted, so her promotion is mostly word-of-mouth. Once you hear what she has to offer, you'll probably spread the word too.

That's one of many questions Cannon asks on her new album, How Many. Raye Zaragoza is our guest today and we are chatting about her new album, Hold That Spirit, set for release on August 11. Listening to the album, I can tell this is an artist who is not afraid to get personal and bare her soul through her art.
Beyond talking about these new songs, this episode goes into some of Ray's more personal moments, including breaking off a wedding engagement and using those funds to produce this album, as well as her battles with an eating disorder.
I found Raye and her music to be inspirational and honest, a testament to how we are not alone in our struggles.

On the show today we have one of the most fascinating success stories I have heard in a long time! Rosie (Rosaileen Scher) is a 23-year-old singer/songwriter who got her big break from a viral TikTok post of her song "Never The 1." She gives us the inside look at the days and moments surrounding that event, and it is incredible!
Rosie has a new EP dropping on June 23 called 5 Songs For Healing. Before our interview it was easy to tell that Rosie is a great songwriter, but after speaking with her it became clear that she is also so much more. At only 23, she has the maturity of someone much deeper into their career. In this episode, we take a deep dive into some classic songs with Steve Baltin, author of Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives. Baltin got his stories directly from the artists who recorded the songs, conducting interviews with the likes of Joe Perry, Brad Delson of Linkin' Park, and even had a contribution from the famously elusive Tom Waits.
As fellow song investigators, we're very impressed with Baltin's work. He does a great job tracing the trajectory of these songs and putting them into context. He posits, for instance, that "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" would be too smart for 2022 but was perfect for 1985, the "golden era of political songwriting."
Baltin also explains his process - how he got these artists and songwriters to open up about their songs.

Today on the show we have Arthur Lizie, who has a new book coming out on November 15 called Prince On Prince: Interviews And Encounters.
Prince is one of those artists I have loved as long as I can remember but never truly learned much about his story. Through Arthur's book I have discovered why. Prince's relationship with the press was on-again, off-again at best and he did an amazing job at keeping the mystique around his name.
I love the way this book reads with chronological interviews that give us a sense of where the artist was at particular times in his life. In this episode, we discuss some specific songs and talk about a feud Prince had with the Foo Fighters.

We've seen the name Alex Forbes on songwriting credits for years, going back to the '80s with "Don't Rush Me" by Taylor Dayne and "Too Turned On" by Alisha. More recently, she popped up on a great song called "Sugar My" by Jann Klose, who told us about writing it with her.

Ten years ago BJ Barham and his band American Aquarium were about to call it quits. They'd been touring nationally at small clubs and had seemingly plateaued in their growth as a band. They'd written some new tunes and decided to hop into a studio with Jason Isbell to record what they thought would be their swan song album, Burn. Flicker. Die. It was not.
As BJ describes in this Songfacts Podcast episode, things changed after that album. When I press him on what he thinks happened, he points to writing songs for himself rather than trying to create something he thought listeners might want. Ten years later and American Aquarium is going strong, about to release their latest album, Chicamacomico, and start a massive summer tour with a headlining slot at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

Even by the lofty standards of the late '60s, The Chambers Brothers were visionaries, blending rock, gospel and psychedelia into a musical bouillabaisse seasoned with social awareness. Lester is the third of the four Brothers, who were joined by a white drummer named Brian Keenan.
The Chambers family is from Mississippi, but they formed their band in Los Angeles after the oldest brother, George, was discharged from the Army and settled there. "He went to California because he no longer wanted his brothers and sisters to grow up in a place like Mississippi," Lester says. "We got in the car one night and drove up. And, after two-and-a-half to three days we wound up in California, but it was a struggle getting out of Mississippi on the road."
They started performing in 1961 and added Keenan in 1965, the year they earned great acclaim with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where they went electric hours before Bob Dylan. Their first album, The Time Has Come, was released in 1967 and includes their masterpiece "Time Has Come Today," a song that still rings true five decades later. That album also includes "Uptown," a song you can see the band perform in the documentary Summer Of Soul.

He started out using the name "Johnny Cougar" but gradually freed himself of that shackle by becoming wildly successful, giving him the power to call his own shots. Today on the show I am speaking with Paul Peck. Paul got his start in the music industry as a student at Tulane University. After an inspiring trip to the New Orleans Jazz Fest, he joined the Superfly team that eventually was involved in organizing the first Bonnaroo festival in 2002. In this episode, we get some behind-the-scenes stories on how that came together, and how he put together "super jams" where artists who ordinarily wouldn't perform together join forces on stage.
Paul recently started his own festival, Okeechobee, in Florida and is now serving as the president of the fundraising platform Fandiem. In a world where everything is transient, Sofie Fatouretchi just wants to create something beautiful that lasts. The Vienna-based artist, who performs under her first name, started her musical journey as a classically trained violinist before becoming a global DJ and talent scout for the indie label Stones Throw Records. In 2016, she curated the underground hip-hop and soul compilation Sofie's SOS Tape, which featured her chill Mndsgn collaboration "Abeja." Now she has released her full-length debut solo album, Cult Survivor. Going through the songs on the album it's clear that she isn't afraid to look inward and tap into what she finds for lyrical inspiration.

Ever wonder how those props, video monitors, vocal effects, light cues and other enhancements come together at a concert, all synched to the music? Laura Escudé has the answers.
Escudé has done design, programming and playback for some very big names: Herbie Hancock, Garbage, Miguel, Demi Lovato. But one name stands out among her clients as an unpredictable genius with a keen eye for visual design and a very complex sonic palette: Kanye West. It's telling that Escudé has worked with Kanye for many years, including on his Watch The Throne tour with Jay-Z. He's not the kind of guy who will stick to a script, so Escudé often had to improvise.
Escudé is one of more artistic techies we've encountered. She'll nerd out (her term) as an Ableton instructor, but also plays classical violin so well that Kanye put her on the Watch The Throne track "Made in America."

John Splithoff spent the first part of his career writing single after single. One of those, "Sing To You," broke through in 2016 and now has almost 45 million streams on Spotify. This allowed him to book some tours and festival gigs, and landed him a short stint with a major label. He has since gone back to his independent roots.
In 2019 John unintentionally prepared himself for the quarantine of 2020 by secluding himself and writing an album's worth of demos. Just before the world locked down he went from New York City to Los Angeles and put some of the final touches on his album All In, released in April.

Pop Evil has been making pulse-pounding rock with a positive message for 20 years now, defying the long odds every step of the way. Bands aren't supposed to break out in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and they're not supposed to pay their dues playing covers, but frontman Leigh Kakaty knew better than to head for a coast and abandon their support system, and those covers paid the bills. It was rough going, especially when their major label deal went horribly wrong, but this is a resilient bunch, and struggle only seems to strengthen their resolve and fuel their musical fires.

When you think of alternative, grunge or garage band, what do you think of? It takes me to a time in the early '90s that gave us a new sound and a bunch of great bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains.
I was taken to that time again when I was introduced to the female trio named Hello Mary. These three young ladies are combining their sound of fuzzy guitar riffs, big drum fills and uniquely designed bass runs with impressive harmonies to differentiate their style and take the grunge sound of that time into our ears today.

Donna Jean Godchaux is the only woman to ever be a member of the Grateful Dead. Along with her husband Keith, she was in the group from 1972-1979 as a singer and songwriter. She joined them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
Pre-Dead, Godchaux sang backup in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, appearing on the Percy Sledge classic "When a Man Loves a Woman." She later sang back up on two of Elvis Presley's most famous songs: "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto."
In this episode, we talk about those Elvis sessions and get the story behind a song she wrote for the Dead called "Sunrise," which appears on the Terrapin Station album. DC Glenn is one half of the hip-hop group Tag Team, who wrote and recorded the smash hit, "Whoomp! There It Is," revived in a brilliant Geico commercial ("Scoop! There It Is") that exploded on social media.
You may not know that there was a competing song called "Whoot, There It Is" that was released first in 1993. In this episode, DC talks about that rivalry and explains what inspired "Whoomp!"

Sunny Sweeney chose a life in music for the most noble of reasons: She didn't want to get a real job. After graduating from Texas State University in 2001, she couldn't bear the thought of answering to a boss, so she became one, writing her own songs and leading her own band.
Her breakthrough single, "From a Table Away," came in 2010. It's one of those songs that hits you in the heart, and it was inspired by a true story, which Sunny explains in this episode. Jesse Fink is the author of The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC and Bon: The Last Highway. His extensive research has led him to conclude that Scott did not die from alcohol poisoning, as officially reported. He also thinks the Back In Black album, released just five months after his death in 1980, has at least some lyrics written by Scott, who is not credited as a writer on any of the songs.

Firefall didn't set their sights on soft-rock stardom, but they were stuck with it when "You Are The Woman," from their debut album, dug a trench on Adult Contemporary radio, enduring as a staple of at-work listening.
On this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, we welcome founding members Jock Bartley and Mark Andes. Jock, on guitar, is Firefall's mainstay, part of every iteration. Mark, their bass player, left in 1980 and returned in 2014. Pre-Firefall, Jock toured with Gram Parsons' band; Mark was a member of Spirit when they toured with Led Zeppelin in 1968 and 1969 - their song "Taurus" seeped into "Stairway To Heaven." He left Firefall in 1980 and picked up with Heart a few years later, just in time for their astounding resurgence.
The main songwriters in Firefall were Rick Roberts, last with the band in 1992, and Larry Burnett, who left in 1981. Roberts delivered "You Are The Woman" and the mellow follow-up "Just Remember I Love You"; Burnett came up with the fan favorite "Cinderella."
Firefall has been mostly a live act the last few decades, but they put together an album called Comet that was finally released in December 2020 following coronavirus-induced delays. Before Adam Levine, Benny Blanco and Travie McCoy got to it, "Stereo Hearts" was an emo song Brandon Lowry co-wrote on a piano. Fed into the star-on machine (otherwise known as The Voice, where Levine promoted it), the song got swole, amassing half a billion streams on YouTube alone.
Contrast that with Brandon's life as an independent artist. Recording under the alias Baby Fuzz, he makes music with a dark humor that hints at the end times - it's the perspective of an environmentalist. On his last tour (pre-COVID), he slept in his van at Walmart parking lots.

Of the many tear-inducing moments on This Is Us, one of the most powerful comes on the 2017 "Memphis" episode under the song "We Can Always Come Back To This," used in a scene where the cancer-stricken William is comforted by his son. Chris Pierce co-wrote that song, drawing inspiration from the death of his father.
Pierce has made a name for himself as a singer and songwriter who can pack a musical wallop, endearing himself to music supervisors who have used his tunes in True Blood, Rosewood, Soul Men, and many other movies and TV shows. In 2020, he lent his voice to the protest movement with the incisive track "It's Been Burning For A While," which became a viral hit when he performed it on a Playing For Change showcase.

Having first formed in Boulder, CO, the duo has since relocated to Brooklyn full time where they have been growing as performers and songwriters. There is a metaphysical side of music we rarely hear about. Consider the question: Will music survive if humans die out? The Brothers Koren - Isaac and Thorald - call this "musical cosmology."
The idea, which Isaac first explored at Northeastern University, is that we all have a unique way of hearing music (eardrums are as unique as fingerprints), and by understanding how we process it, we can understand ourselves. They've been teaching the concept for six years now on "Songwriter's Journey" retreats, which have produced some songs that might be on your playlists (we found out about them through Monique DeBose, who was on the podcast in September).
These Aussie brothers formed a group called The Kin in 2001, landed a deal with Interscope, and toured with Pink in 2013. These days, in addition to their duties as musical zen masters, they have a group called Fransancisco, which is set to release their first album in 2021. In this episode, we take a deep dive into our musical cosmologies and hear them perform a few songs. Excerpts from the transcript are below.

"Best Day of My Life" is a song we're sure you've heard. It was written and recorded by American Authors: Zac Barnett (vocals), James Shelley (guitar), Dave Rublin (bass), and Matthew Sanchez (drums). Today we bring you a wonderful conversation with Dave, who also does a lot of the production in the band. We go over the band's beginnings at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, find out how their writing and recording have progressed, and talk about their work with Sound Mind, an organization helping to improve mental health services through music.
American Authors were writing for their first album, Oh, What a Life, in 2012 when the Sandy Hook tragedy happened not far from where they were working. They reacted by making the kind of music that celebrates the best in us - the kind that gives us home for humanity. They followed with What We Live For in 2016 and Seasons in 2019. Their most recent release is the EP Counting Down, which again finds them in tune with positive vibes.

She'll stack a cappella harmonies and sing about just maybe being in love with her best friend. There's nothing conventional about Maude Latour, so it's not surprising she learned music through an unconventional method. When she was in Hong Kong, the world-traveling Latour studied the Suzuki Method, an immersive program where she learned how to listen to music before learning how to read it.
LaTour has lived in Hong Kong, Sweden, London, and now New York City, where she's a student at Columbia University. Her worldly ways and penchant for journaling make her a formidable lyricist; she's been known to use her powers in songs about ex-boyfriends, including one with a chorus she wrote in the middle of a fight. She's big on Spotify, where she showed up on Indie Pop and Fresh Finds playlists, earning millions of streams.

Before the Sex Pistols, there was The Damned, but as Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) points out, the pioneers get the arrows, the settlers get the gold. Scabies formed The Damned in 1976 with guitarist Brian James, bass player Captain Sensible, and lead singer Dave Vanian. Their first album, released in 1977, is the punk landmark Damned Damned Damned, which as Scabies explains, took them from opening act to headliners very quickly. That year, they became the first British punk band to tour America. In this episode, Scabies, who was with the band until 1995, recalls the London scene in the dawn of punk, when fisticuffs (sometimes encouraged by Scabies, who would leave his kit to trade blows with audience members) were a byproduct of the energy and excitement. The Damned never tore up the charts, but they left quite a legacy with their look, sound, and performance style. They're still extant, led by Vanian and Sensible, while Scabies has moved on to a number of other projects, including the bands Professor And The Madman, and The Sinclairs. Christopher Pappas comes from a musical family in Auburn, New Hampshire. After getting a taste of local celebrity by opening for his dad's band in his early teens, he knew that finding a career in performing was what he wanted to do.
After establishing the act Elle Belle in 2013, he released a handful of records, always expanding on his never-ending search for new sounds. On November 13, 2020, he'll release the album Post Everything. Recorded mostly live with a full band, he hopes it will capture the soundscapes of this moment in time.

The Suzy Bogguss story starts in the small town of Aledo, Illinois, where she grew up listening to her dad's Merle Haggard 8-tracks. In 1985, she got a big break when she sang at Silver Dollar City, a Nashville amusement park that Dolly Parton turned into Dollywood the next year. With Parton's endorsement, she became a featured performer at the park and earned a record deal.
Bogguss is more of a song interpreter than a songwriter - the title track of her 1989 debut album Somewhere Between is a Haggard cover - but she did co-write one of her biggest hits: "Hey Cinderella," an unconventional take on the famous fairy tale.

Born and raised in a Christian family in New York City, Amanda Brown was influenced mostly by gospel music until her time at the highly prestigious LaGuardia Arts High School. After a brief stint at Howard University, she decided to pursue music full time and soon found herself on tour singing backup for Alicia Keys. Three years on the road and she was ready to pave her own path. Singing in late-night clubs in NYC she earned her chops as a performer and decided to audition for season 3 of The Voice.

From her time improvising at UC Berkeley, to traveling the world performing and finding her voice as a songwriter, Monique DeBose has an incredible story to share. A polymath with degrees in Spiritual Psychology and Mathematics, she earned acclaim for her one-woman show Mulatto Math: Summing Up the Race Equation in America and is a prominent speaker who has done TED Talks.
DeBose has made her mark in music with songs that carry the weight of struggle and experience. Kirk Hamilton is the guy to ask. A few years ago, a friend asked him to use his vast musical knowledge to explain why Toto's "Africa" is so special, which led Kirk down a path to his Strong Songs podcast, where he deconstructs songs in glorious detail; he's covered tunes by Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, and even the Hamilton musical.
We had the opportunity to speak with Kirk about his musical education and qualifications. He also takes us on a dive into the world of video game music and lets us in on his process for putting an episode together in his home studio - it's quite the musical undertaking.

Simon Milliman, or "Urban Jack" as he is currently known on stage, is challenging himself to write 12 albums in 12 months. As you can imagine, this doesn't leave time for revision - it's kind of like free writing, but with music. In this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, he explains how he's planning to pull it off... with no filler!
Simon is a fixture on the music scene in Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife, kids, dogs, and yes, chickens. Full of energy and endless creativity, Simon is relentlessly upbeat; he's one of those people who make you question how you are spending your own free time.
As Simon explains, there are a number of challenges that come with being continually creative and with making each album unique in sound and style. Here, he talks about his approach, and also discusses a couple of his past projects, including his time live scoring a film with a band that must have been playing as tight as anyone in order to hit those cues. In 2007, Eric Victorino's band Strata toured with Sonny Moore, who later became Skrillex. Victorino could feel the musical tides shifting away from the rock band model and toward the kind of electronic music generated by DJs or virtual acts. Teaming up with Giovanni Giusti, whom he met online, Eric formed The Limousines and scored in 2010 with "Internet Killed The Video Star," a song portending this musical cybershift. As we've learned from the coronavirus lockdown, the convenience and endless possibility the virtual workspace affords can also lead to anxiety and depression, especially in the setting of an uneasy social and political climate. As Eric explains, he has to make music these days with his own mental health in mind. In the summer of 2020, Victorino re-fired Strata and released an aggressively melodic new tune called "Around The Bend," which he wrote under unusual circumstances with his bandmate Ryan Hernandez. In this episode, Eric talks about building a catharsis into that song, dissects "Internet Killed The Video Star," and explains what it's like going from band member to making music with someone you've never met. This interview took place as he was surrounded by California wildfires, knowing he might have to disconnect and take his family to safer pastures at any time.
