In this episode of the Go Hard Chick podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, a seasoned expert in functional medicine and healthcoaching. We delved into the often-misunderstood realms of functional medicine and the pivotal role of health coaches in modern healthcare.

Dr. Sandi shared her extensive journey, starting from her early days as a teacher in the late 1960s, transitioning into clinical psychology, and eventually finding her passion in functional medicine. She highlighted the importance ofstress management, the mind-body connection, and how these elements have been integral to her work over the years.

We discuss the current state of traditional healthcare, where doctors often have limited time with patients and tend to focus on medication rather than holisticapproaches. In this episode of the Go Hard Chick podcast, Dr. William Davis, M.D., a cardiologist and New York Times bestselling author, shares his journey from conventional interventional cardiology to a more holistic approach to heart health. Dr. Davis shared his personal journey, which was significantly influenced by the sudden cardiac death of his mother shortly after a successful coronary procedure. This event led him to explore and eventually advocate for preventive measures outside the conventional medical practices.

Dr. Davis introduces us to the concept of the Milwaukee Heart Scan, a diagnostic tool that measures the amount of plaque in arteries and predicts potential heart attacks years before they might occur. He emphasizes the limitations of traditional treatments like statins and low-fat diets, which he argued do not effectively stop the progression of heart disease. Instead, Dr. Davis advocatesfor a more comprehensive approach that includes dietary changes, identifying and managing the real causes of heart disease through advanced testing like NMR lipoprotein testing, and addressing vitamin D deficiencies.

A significant part of our discussion also revolved around the coronary calcium score, a test that Dr. Davis feels is underutilized in medical practice due to its low cost and lack of profitability for hospitals. He explained how thistest could provide crucial early warnings for heart disease risk.

Dr. Davis also touched on broader health issues, including the detrimental effects of modern wheat consumption, the importance of gut health, and the potential dangers of popular diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. He explained how these drugs could lead to muscle loss and subsequent weight gain post-treatment, worsening patients' overall health.

This episode is packed with critical insights on preventive health care, the importance of dietary choices, and the need for a shift in how we manage and understand chronic diseases. Dr. Davis's expertise and innovative approaches to cardiology and overall health provided our listeners with valuable information to consider and potentially implement in their health routines.

In this episode, I am joined by guest Gerrard Boyd. Gerrardis a visionary consultant, theologian, dedicated family man, and a published author of the book, Silence No More: A Black Man’s Quest for Intimacy (2003). Gerrard lives by the principles of living authentically, laughing daily and loving self-first.

We dive into the real phenomenon of infidelity and how it relates to midlife crisis in men.

We also explore how men often base their self-worth on external factors, which can lead to frustration when they perceive a loss of identity and validation. It's important to understand that the desire for validation and self-redefinition goes beyond just the sexual aspect and is driven by a deeper need for self-discovery and identity. Cheating is often a manifestation of the desire for self-affirmation and self-worth outside of an existing relationship.

In her teens and 20’s, guest Tanya Willis was like many of us.  She wanted the quick fixes, the magic pills, the fairy dust – whatever she could get her hands on to make a lean, happy and sexy machine. But, she quickly learned that what she wanted did not exist.  She was so frustrated. She felt like she was going around and around until she was completely exhausted and back at the starting point. She make a decision to delve further into holistic health – the emotional, mental and physical – wrote a book, and has been in this field for many years helping 1000’s of women. She discovered that by being smarter, not working harder, she could get the results she wanted for herself and also for her clients. Her mission is to continue to help women step into the body they WANT. To feel confident & sexy, in control of their food choices and have their clothes fit just as they should while having the energy to live a VIBRANT life. This was a great conversation about how perimenopausal and menopausal women can thrive exactly where they are by listening to their bodies and working smarter and not harder! We discuss:·      Dealing with shame;·      The issue of eating to soothe;·      How non-action is rooted in fear;·      The importance of being aware;·      How we have normalized stress;·      And much more! Learn more about Tanya:Website:https://www.vibrantlivingwithtanya.com/Book:  Cookie Dough in the DarkJoin the Go Hard Chickemail list!:  https://mailchi.mp/e071daa1445b/g68zgxope4 Connect with me:Website: www.gohardchick.comInstagram: @gohardchick and @krisalisefitFacebook:  Kristal Holmes   Music CreditMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/mountaineer/chipmunk-funkLicense code: L1NW1JREYSVAUXHX Disclaimer: This podcast is for informational purposes only. National Foot Health Awareness Month is observed in April. In this episode Dr. Sarah Haller provides us with some actionable tips to aid us in our foot health.

Dr. Haller is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with a professional focus on musculoskeletal deformities, sports medicine, and post-traumatic reconstruction and revision surgery of the foot and ankle.

For more than three years, Dr. Sarah Haller has been treating some of the country’s most extreme foot-related ailments on TLC’s hit series, My Feet Are Killing Me. On the show, the doctors demonstrate how they treat a variety of problems including hammertoes, warts, tumors and one of the most common and painful podiatric conditions – bunions. After years of seeing patients suffer with the painful and progressive deformity, the physicians are taking steps to build broader awareness of bunions and the fact that they can often be treated successfully with the most advanced treatment options.

“Gratitude is like a magnet, the more attention we give it, the more blessings we attract.”

In Episode 55, I am joined by T. Kari Mitchell (TK). TK defines gratitude as “an intentional spiritual practice.” In this episode she shares 9 ways in which we can practice gratitude in the new year and every year to enhance our lives and the lives of others.

TK, is a motivational speaker, author and integrative wellness coach who has rededicated her life to helping women find purpose in retirement. After "graduating" from her 32-year teaching career, caring for her ailing mother, and overcoming her own health challenges through lifestyle interventions, TK knew she had more important work to do. At the age of 62, she started her own business, Lifestyle 120, in order to inspire others to live their best life.

TK offers talks, workshops, and online programs to show boomers how to release

limited mindsets and reclaim their health, confidence, purpose, and power

so they can flourish in their golden years.

TK’s motto is live, learn, love, grow, and be a blessing to others.

Bela Castro is a lifestyle and spirituality coach who is re-energizing common fitness and nutritional goals by revealing what is truly motivating them.

Many of us have it in our heads that we want to lose weight, snag that promotion at work, eat healthier, and move forward with our lives. What we may not realize is the unhealthy mindset that’s holding us back. Bela's B-Fit program was born with the aim to help women better understand their intentions as a way to break free of bad habits and negative thought cycles. Her programs teach women of all backgrounds to become more focused, intentional, and tough in the face of life’s traumas and setbacks.

Prior to her own health and healing journey, Bela’s world came crashing down around her after infidelity reared its ugly head in an otherwise regular and quiet life. Once divorce, an empty corporate cubicle, and a vacant home created the space necessary for Bela to build the life she always wanted - but never knew she did.

In this episode, we discuss how women can become mentally and physically aligned so that we can achieve our desires.

Yewande Faloyin is the Founder & CEO of OTITỌ, which specializes in coaching entrepreneurial executives and serial high-achievers to accelerate into more senior, more impactful leadership positions. As a Certified Leadership and Performance Coach with leadership experience in high-pressured environments, Yewande helps ambitious entrepreneurial leaders how to confidently accelerate into more impactful leadership positions so that you can achieve more of the success you truly want ...... all without the overwhelm, pressure, & burnout.

Before founding OTITỌ, Yewande held leadership positions at McKinsey & Company and Morgan Stanley. She describes her professional life as being divided into two phases: Pre-Burnout & Post-Burnout. Before her CV she was “ticking the serial high-achiever boxes.” Up to the point of her burnout, she had made multiple "impossible" moves up the ladder by:

· Becoming the youngest VP promotee in Morgan Stanley PB, despite starting my career in tech

· Leaping from Morgan Stanley to McKinsey without the typical influence of an MBA

· Leading and counselling CEOs and their C-Suite through very challenging business problems

She was successful on paper, but something didn't feel right. She was exhausted and didn't feel she was creating the impact and reward she wanted. As a result, she walked away from McKinsey in 2018, having no idea if she would find what she wanted. Ultimately, her self-discovery journey led her to what she is doing today - executive leadership and performance coaching.

What is trauma?

In this episode we get into a candid discussion about trauma with Dr. Tiffany Pope. Dr. Tiffany C. Pope, PhD, LPC, NCC is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Life Coach, and Consultant. She has a passion for helping others by providing a warm, safe, comfortable environment where you can truly be yourself. She has a passion to help people grow in their relationships outcomes and enhance opportunities to transform their self-concept.

Some of her specialties include working with teenagers, young adults, and military families. She is always seeking to advance my knowledge through professional development opportunities. Dr. Pope does not subscribe to a particular counseling model because she doesn’t believe in a "one size fits all" approach to meeting her client's individual needs. Instead, she uses her instincts and professional training to help children, families and individuals look at their lives with a fresh perspective.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What is trauma?
  • What can one do to help identify their traumas?
  • What are the signs that you may be experiencing a trauma?
  • We can’t avoid trauma, but when a traumatic event happens, how do we manage it?

And much more!

“All disease begins in the gut.” – Is a quote attributed to the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. Well, Hippocrates wasn’t far off. Every time we eat or drink or expose ourselves to chemicals and hormones, we are either feeding disease or fighting it.

In Episode 35, I discuss gut health with guest and Go Hard Chick Amanda Meri. Amanda Meri, a.k.a. “The Gut Nurse”, is a registered nurse and health coach who, for years, had struggled with health issues and symptoms such as hair loss, brain fog, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation, gastritis, mold illness, and mood swings.

Amanda decided to take matters into her own hands and found a way to heal her body naturally. Now, her mission is to women on what gut health is, how it connects to overall health, and how they can feel better.

In this Episode we discuss:

  • What gut health is and why you should be concerned about your gut
  • Why good gut health is important for health and well-being
  • Symptoms of an unhealthy gut
  • The relationship between the gut and the immune system

And much more!

In Episode 29 we jump into a quick overview of the potential dangers of sugar and artificial sweeteners.   While I discussed the possible dangers of consuming sugar in Episode 28, I decided to do a quick follow up episode to discuss artificial sweeteners.  While artificial sweeteners allow us to reduce calories from our diets while enjoying the sweet flavor, they also make it easy to overindulge on sweet foods and beverages.  Stay tuned for my 7 Day Sugar Detox Challenge coming soon!  Get your copy of my FREE Smoothie Recipe Ebook:  http://eepurl.com/hNOGen Connect with me:  Website: www.gohardchick.com Instagram: @gohardchick and @krisalisefit  Facebook: KrisaliseFit  Music: Green Tea by Smith The Mister https://smiththemister.bandcamp.com Smith The Mister https://bit.ly/Smith-The-Mister-YT Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/smith-the-mister-green-tea Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/A7zatZLprhA

What you eat can affect inflammation in the body. Inflammation is often triggered as a way to protect your health when the immune system notices anything foreign in the body. Inflammation is not necessarily a bad thing, but too much inflammation, or chronic inflammation, can lead to serious disease.

If you want to battle inflammation, start by taking a look in your kitchen. In this episode, I discuss vegetable oils and sugar and how they cause inflammation in the body which can lead to serious disease.

In Episode 25, I am joined by Kayla Jackson of A Place for Audre. Kayla is an ex-social worker turned home stager turned coach! Her journey involved a lot of appreciating social work but missing the emphasis on how important a home looks and feels to help one achieve goals.

A Place for Audre provides coaching to curate your home and life. Kayla helps her clients get back to their knowing, and have more ease in their home and life without feeling guilt.

In this episode we discuss Kayla’s journey to creating her business A Place for Audre, how to find liberation in your life and home, how guilt affects our home life, and how we can achieve self-actualization.

In this solo episode, I discuss what I have been up to the last 3 months and how I had to prioritize my self care. One of the biggest decisions I made during this time to prioritize my health was to quit my last job. It had been a source of significant stress and I had to get real about how I want to live my life moving forward. So, I made the decision to choose my health and well-being over my job before the universe made the decision for me.

But, do not fret, I will go over a few ways we can all practice self-care in this episode that do not involve quitting your job, including the power of “no.”

In February 2020, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease.  I have learned that the disease is now in remission, so I wanted to share a bit about my journey. I want to encourage you to regularly see your doctor(s) whether you have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or not.  Early detection is key with this disease as all other diseases.  Pay attention to how you feel and if you are having any symptoms that are out of the norm. The symptom could be something minor, or the sign of some bigger issue. Don’t let anyone dismiss your symptoms as being something you are imagining. In this episode I discuss:

What is an autoimmune disease? Some of the most common autoimmune diseases. What is Hashimoto's Disease? Common Symptoms of Hashimoto's Disease. Possible causes of Hashimoto's Disease? Foods to avoid. What I did to manage my disease and put it into remission.

In this episode, I unpack self sabotage. We may all engage in self sabotage, but may not even realize it. During my own journey to better my mental health, I have come to realize some of the behaviors I have been engaging in are rooted in self sabotage.  The key is to identify the issue and get real with dealing with it.  Self sabotage can occur when we fear failure, success, or we are looking for a way out of a situation. Self awareness and living a life that you desire is key to preventing self sabotage.   In this episode I discuss:

What is self sabotage?

Why do we self sabotage?

What does self sabotage look like?

What causes us to self sabotage?

How can we overcome self sabotage?

Go Hard Chicks, in Episode 18, I share how being in service to others, not only helps the recipient, but helps you as well!  In order to be on a true wellness journey, we must work on our mental health and being in service to others helps us keep our minds and spirits in check.   Research has shown that participation in voluntary giving "is significantly predictive of better mental and physical health, life satisfaction, self-esteem, happiness, lower depressive symptoms, psychological distress, and mortality and functional inability." -VOLUNTEERING AND HEALTH BENEFITS IN GENERAL ADULTS: CUMULATIVE EFFECTS AND FORMS. Giving does not have to be complicated.  In fact you can give by: Saying thank you to someone for something they’ve done for you. Phoning a relative or friend who may need support or company. Asking a colleague how they are and really listen to the answer. Offer to lend a hand if you see a stranger struggling with bags. Go Hard Chicks, I challenge you to find ways that you can engage in simple acts of kindness in your daily lives.  Doing so helps not only you, but the universe.  Doing for other is medicine for the soul!

Counseling and Consulting, she helps her client's learn to grow in their relationships outcomes, and enhance opportunities to transform their self-concept.  She has a passion for helping others by providing a warm, safe, comfortable environment where you can truly be yourself. Some of her specialties include working with teenagers, young adults, and military families.  Dr. Pope does not subscribe to a particular counseling model because she doesn’t believe in a "one size fits all" approach to meeting her client's individual needs. Instead, she uses her instincts and professional training to help children, families and individuals look at their lives with a fresh perspective.  October is World Mental Health month.  In exploring this topic of mental health, I realized that I have been seeing an increasing number of people who are angry.  In this episode, we take a deep dive in discussing anger management, it's possible causes, management, and how to deal with others who may be suffering from anger issues.  Candidly, I share some of my own issues with anger management and dealing with the anger of others.  This almost became a mini therapy session for myself!  This was a great episode we can all benefit from in our continued quest to live happier and fuller lives.  Connect with Dr. Pope: Email: cultivatingrootsllc@gmail.com Website:  https://tiffanypope.wixsite.com/cultivatingroots Phone:  (706) 231-2008 Connect with me: Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/gohardchick Website: www.gohardchick.com Instagram: @gohardchick and @krisalisefit Facebook: Krisalise Fit

In Episode 15, I am joined by Dara Grimes a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, counselor and founder of A Better Mind, A Better Me, LLC. She engages her clients and addresses their diverse needs by cultivating a relationship of trust that is committed to problem solving. Dara firmly believes in honoring and observing discretion and care for the mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of her clients. She counsels them to actively transform their thinking and perspective to actualize what they deem impossible – whether it be overcoming anxiety, hopelessness, depression, relational challenges or fear.

Dara combines her 15+ years of experience as a Clinical Social Worker, both for the U.S. Military and in private clinics working with families and youth, and incorporates what she gleaned from her 14+ years as a tour manager in the entertainment industry to advise her clients in confidently managing their daily life challenges in a healthy way.

I have known Dara since we were infants. I have watched her grow from being a little girl to a powerhouse tour manager for artists such as Baby Face and Jennifer Lopez, just to name a few, and later become a social worker. We grew up in Gary, Indiana and attended Emerson Visual and Performing Arts as children. In this episode we discuss our creative backgrounds and growth and careers through the years. We address how you can combine both a traditional career with a creative one. This episode is all about empowerment and encouragement. Before you can know who you are, you need to discover what is true for you in your own heart and true authentic self. Learn to listen to your own inner knowing and creative impulses and nurture this relationship. You must know who you are, what lights you up, what your needs are and be able to communicate them. Learn to follow this voice and take action on it. Once you identify your passion or goals, you have to commit. Until there is commitment there will always be hesitancy. And hesitancy and doubt keep us stuck in excuses and sabotaging success by believing we aren’t worthy enough to live our deepest heartfelt yearnings and dreams.

Go Hard Chicks, a lot has been happening lately, and I have been stressed out!  I am feeling overwhelmed by virtual schooling and working.  And I realize that I have been doing way too much all at one time!  Burning toast EVERY day has become the norm for me. Why? Because I keep trying to multitask to the maximum instead of simply waiting the minute or two for the toast to cook. This episode is about how we all need to slow it down and take time for ourselves.  I discuss 5 ways we can reduce stress naturally: 1.  Go outside and exercise 2.  Practice deep breathing 3.  Reframe your thoughts 4.  Practice gratitude 5.  Play music

This passion started early in life as a child growing up in the agricultural town of Fresno, California.  Her parents raised her with an appreciation for health, nutrition and the importance of fueling your body with wholesome foods. Alicia moved from California to Virginia to her “home by the sea” Hampton University to pursue a degree in Marketing. After graduating from Hampton University Alicia entered corporate America as a saleswoman. Although she excelled in her career, she felt something was missing. An avid reader since her childhood, Alicia dove head first into any book, article, blog, or scientific journal she could get her hands on that dealt with public health and nutrition. Finally, Alicia decided to make the shift from a corporate sales career to that of public health and nutrition earning her Master’s degree in Nutrition from Georgia State University as well as her second bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Georgia State University. Alicia has a burning need to answer the “why’s” in life and her question of “why do African American mothers have the lowest rate of breastfeeding in the United States?” fueled the research behind her master’s thesis and spurred her involvement in the field of lactation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mentioned in the Episode: Unicorn Salt:  https://beautiful-briny-sea.myshopify.com/products/magic-unicorn ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams  by Matthew Walker PhD

EPISODE 9 Recognizing pain and trauma and addressing it head on is an important part of our wellness journey. The recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor has forced many of us, including myself, to reflect upon our lives and how the constant and systematic mistreatment of Black people has shaped us as people. The systematic racism has shaped many of us into who we are today and how we move and live within this world. It is an added burden to our existence as Black people, that whites simply do not share.

In this special episode, I share how racism has affected my life and I have invited Kettisha Jones and Demetra Ford to share their experiences as Black women living in this current environment. I hope this episode inspires you to reflect within and share your trauma with others however you deem fit and mobilize and take action to effectuate change.  And remember one way to take action is to vote and be counted!

If you are a non-Black person, who cannot relate to the Black experience, this is a great episode to give you a glimpse of what three Black women deal with on a daily basis.

EPISODE 3 In this episode, I discuss All Things Yoga with guest Demetra Ford. Go Hard Chicks, I love to learn the stories of people who may have started in traditional careers, but somehow found their way to health and fitness.  Demetra is one of those individuals. Demetra is a licensed attorney, who recently retired from the practice of law, and currently divides her time between her real estate projects and her yoga practice. Demetra practices and teaches Vinyasa yoga.  Her class is generally a vigorous flow in which she utilizes music and encourages her students to vibe and flow through each pose with grace. Demetra’s goal is to share yoga with those people who have never had exposure to the practice.  Realizing that some people have the misconception that yoga is only for certain people, certain body types, certain ages, etc., Demetra likes to remind people that “yoga is for everyone, even those (like her) with a lil extra “junk in the trunk.” In this episode Demetra answers the following questions:

What exactly is yoga? Is yoga spiritual or religious? What are the common misconceptions about yoga? How did Demetra decide to get involved with yoga? Are there any previous fitness involvements or requirements to practice yoga? Is it necessary to go to a studio or is it ok to have a home-based practice? What are the various styles of yoga? How to decide on a particular style of yoga? What are some of the benefits of yoga for women? Are yoga and meditation the same thing? What are some of the general benefits of meditation? How do you get started with yoga?

EPISODE 1 SHOW NOTES

In this episode, I will be introducing myself and what Go Hard Chick is all about. I’ll cover my health and fitness backstory, my challenges with stress, and how fitness became my passion. You will hear about how I got started on my fitness journey and the state of my current health and fitness journey and my health challenges.

P.S. I recorded this introductory episode twice already, but I have made up my mind that the episode you are listening to will be the last take. I realized that I was being a bit too critical of myself because everything was not as perfect as I would have liked it to be. But, I will say this episode is all me in one of my most relaxed and real states. And, as Go Hard Chicks, we must realize that there is beauty in imperfection and realness and as we move forward on our journeys, we will get better and better.
